Riesling
One of the world's great grape varieties and the acknowledged king of German vineyards, also important in Alsace, Riesling goes through a number of ripening phases making it incredibly varied. Picked early it can form a base wine for Methode Champenoise; a little later, it makes a wonderfully crisp, aromatic lemon-lime filled dry white. A little riper the grapes produce an excellent, slightly sweet 'Spatlese' wine, later again an 'Auslese', and so on. In Australia, crisp, minerally, citrus-led styles dominate, with regions like South Australia, Victoria and Western Australia producing the finest examples. Fish, shellfish and crustaceans are perfect partners. Browse our top rated Riesling wines here.

2024 Keller Limestone (off-dry) RieslingRheinhessen, GERMANYReduced from $89.99$79. 99Bottle$959.88 DozenABV: 11%Closure: CorkIt is difficult to overstate just how central Weingut Keller has become to the modern understanding of dry Riesling. Since Klaus-Peter Keller took over from his father in 2001, the estate has set a global benchmark for precision and expression, joined in recent years by his son Felix, who now plays an increasingly active role in both the vineyards and cellar. Together with Julia Keller, they continue to refine a style that balances crystalline purity with textural depth, producing some of the most sought-after wines in Germany and beyond.
Sourced largely from the Hubacker and Kirchspiel Grosse Lage vineyards, the Limestone Riesling is a study in tension and clarity. It combines concentrated fruit and spice with a gentle touch of sweetness, all carried by Keller's hallmark, finely etched acidity. The result is a wine that shows remarkable focus and drive while remaining accessible and immediate, a perfect introduction to the off-dry style of the estate.

The Limestone Kabinett captures a lighter, more delicate side of Keller's winemaking. It serves as the off-dry counterpart to Von der Fels, showing similar purity and precision but in a finer, more lifted frame. The balance between sweetness and acidity is seamless, giving a wine of effortless charm, freshness and mineral clarity.

This one is already bottled and released. Fruit from Kirchspiel and AbtsE.
Back to pure fruit after the savoury intensity of G-Max and Morstein: ripe green fruits, creamy citrus, creamy like tangy lemon curd. With air, more smoky, but with the sweetness of a Kabinett wine, the fruit is highlighted. Fruity yet stony. Generous and fresh at the same time. An intense Kabinett with excellent balance even with very high acidity. Needs time to become less primary. Drink 2026-2035.

2024 Keller Von der Fels RieslingRheinhessen, GERMANYReduced from $115.00$105. 00Bottle$1260.00 DozenABV: 12.5%Closure: CorkIt is difficult to overstate just how central Weingut Keller has become to the modern understanding of dry Riesling. Much of this quality stems from remarkable raw material. The estate farms some of the Rheinhessen's greatest sites: Morstein, Abtserde, Kirchspiel and Hubacker, with most vines now well over 30 years old, and many far older. Yields rarely exceed 35 hl/ha, harvest is deliberately late, and meticulous hand selection allows for long skin contact before gentle pressing. Fermentation takes place in a mix of old oak and stainless steel, always with an eye toward transparency and finesse rather than weight.
While more than 85 percent of Keller's holdings lie within Grosse Lage (Grand Cru) vineyards, only a small proportion is bottled under those designations. The estate's calling card, Riesling von der Fels, has taken on a greater role in recent years, both in scale and in significance. Initially conceived as a cuvée of young-vine fruit from top sites, it now incorporates a growing proportion of mature vines producing fruit of genuine GG quality. The result is a dry Riesling that captures the essence of the Keller style with remarkable clarity and precision.

The 2024 Riesling von der Fels, made with 50% grapes from Kirchspiel and the other 50% from Frauenberg, Hubacker, Abtserde and Morstein, was vinified in stainless steel and 600- to 2,400-liter oak vats. The wine displays bright, elegant, fresh and delicately spicy fruit with citrus and salty notes. Lean, elegant and juicy on the palate, with plenty of salt, a firm structure and lively citrus notes, this is an almost light, aromatic and very drinkable dry Riesling from shell limestone and limestone soils. It has a savory finish. 12.5% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted at the domaine in August 2025. Drink 2028-2045.

Stephan Reinhardt - Robert Parker's Wine AdvocateThe winery’s calling card, says Keller. Includes a higher percentage of Kirchspiel (45%) than normal, with one barrel from vines planted 1964, two barrels of Morstein and AbtsE and a bit of Hubacker. Also the younger Frauenberg vines. Average vine age 30 years. No longer really the young vines though that is how this cuvée started. 40,000 bottles produced. To be released May 2025. Cask sample.
Lightly flinty aroma, pure salty-sour citrus. More mineral and less Riesling-defined than usual. High acid, great tension. Minerality of the vintage and Kirchspiel. A serious Von der Fels. Tight, bone dry, sinewy but with a mouth-watering grapefruit-like fruit foundation. Texture, too, with high dry extract in 2024 giving body to balance the freshness. Acidity is high but integrated. Drink 2027-2035.

RR stands for Riesling from red-soiled parcels within Kirchspiel, where the iron-rich earth gives a spicier, more textural profile than the limestone sites used for Von der Fels. In some vintages the fermentation finishes completely dry, while in others a small touch of residual sugar remains, creating a beautifully balanced feinherb expression. The 2024 vintage offers bright fruit, fine grip and an energetic, savoury edge that highlights the distinct personality of these red soils.

The Abtserde vineyard sits immediately above the old monastery site in Westhofen, on pure limestone soils with light marl. It is regarded as one of the estate's most finely detailed sites, producing wines defined by precision and minerality, and is among Keller's most limited bottlings.

From the Abtserde plot within the Brunnenhäuschen site in Westhofen, the 2023 Abts E Riesling GG is incredibly pure, deep and intense on the nose that is concentrated and chalky, with saline and lemony notes. Full-bodied, pure, fresh and saline on the palate, this is a highly complex and tight Riesling with a very intense, aromatic and structured finish. A great Riesling! Tasted as a sample in May this year. Drink 2025-2070.

Stephan Reinhardt - Robert Parker's Wine AdvocateThe 2023 Riesling Westhofener Brunnenhäuschen Abtserde Grosses Gewächs is from a site between Kirchspiel and Morstein with the high active limestone. The shy nose teases with immensely pure but tender lemon peel notes, still interspersed with reduction. More air adds lemon balm. The palate is a picture of slenderness, brightness, freshness and limestone coolness. Underneath that is salt, stone and immense juiciness. Zestiness reigns, bringing length, depth and extra dimensions of citrus radiance. This is luminous and pure. (Bone-dry) Drink 2028-2060.

The tonal scale starts to rise here to a higher note than in Morstein but also showing more obvious smoky/mineral reduction. Ripe, pure and lightly spicy citrus, becoming ever more fragrant with air. A perfect contrast between crisp acidity and a rounded, deep fullness in the mouth, very different from the Rieslings grown on slate-dominated sites. Immense power, depth and length and an icy-cool finish cutting through all that depth. Drink 2027-2040.

Morstein is the most historic of Keller's holdings, first documented in the 13th century and renowned for its active limestone and clay-marl composition. The vineyard's elevation and exposure give it a reputation for longevity and complexity, making it a cornerstone of Keller's dry Riesling portfolio.

From vines planted in 1944, the Westhofen 2023 Morstein Riesling GG opens intense and fine like a perfume, with wet chalk, lemon juice and yellow plum aromas. Full-bodied, pure and refined on the palate, this is a juicy, savory and saline, finely tannic and chalky Riesling with a long, aromatic and stimulating finish. Stephan Reinhardt - Robert Parker's Wine AdvocateThe 2023 Riesling Westhofener Morstein Grosses Gewächs is made from 75-year-old vines higher up in the Morstein. Just a touch of reduction still swings on the nose, but underneath, white peach, lemon balm and chervil flirt enticingly. Later on, creamy lemon joins in. Smooth serenity, absolutely cooling depth and an almost zen-like calm define the palate. Lemon at the core is almost incidental to this luminous, cool, profound wine with impeccable purity, poise and freshness. The longer you consider this, the deeper it sinks into that limestone. This is a slender, contoured monument to tranquility. (Bone-dry) Drink 2028-2060.

Stuart Pigott - JamesSuckling.comSomeone once described Keller's wines as the Puligny-Montrachet of Germany, and this one exemplifies that association. It’s not the grape variety that takes centre stage here, but the terroir – clay marl with limestone on a rocky subsoil. Everything comes together in perfect harmony: a silky texture, balanced ripeness, and a captivating flow. A hint of iodine mingles with citrus fruit, and the memory of this wine lingers far beyond its finish. Drink 2024-2055.

An even deeper note than in the Oberer Hubacker. Spicy, rich, open in citrus and smoky/herbal complexity. A little more obvious reduction here. Altogether a darker, deeper wine that the previous wines from limestone soils. Immense concentration and power, essence of Riesling from this site, which give a more savoury complexity and seems incapable of flirting with the taster. But the taste stays with you for ever. Something here reminds me of Schubertslay even though the soils and the topography are so different. A smoky/herbal aftertaste. Drink 2027-2040.

Oberer Hubacker lies in the upper section of the Hubacker vineyard in Dalsheim, characterised by clay-limestone soils with higher limestone content than the parcels below. Picked at 31 hectoliters per hectare, the sample of the Dalsheimer 2023 Oberer Hubacker Riesling GG is deep and pure yet not ascetic on the nose that indicates ripe fruit with yeasty and saline notes. Full-bodied, tight and fresh on the palate, this is a dense yet weightless and finessed, persistently salty and finely juicy but always calcareous Riesling. Stephan Reinhardt - Robert Parker's Wine AdvocateThe 2023 Riesling Dalsheimer Oberer Hubacker Monopol Grosses Gewächs opens with prompt Amalfi lemon ripeness on the nose. More green fruits here than in the Kirchspiel, a deeper tone, like going down a tonal scale from von der Fels to Kirchspiel to this wine. Stony/mineral dustiness. On the palate there's great depth and richness, the wine's feet planted more squarely on the ground than those of the Kirchspiel, but it still reaches up to the sky with purity of citrus fruit and intense freshness on the finish. Very long, with extreme tension and freshness. Needs time. As it opens in the glass, it gains more smoky complexity. Drink 2026-2038.

Tank sample. They don't analyse the wines until bottling but this probably has around 40 g/l residual sugar and TA 9.5 g/l.
Fragrant with wildflowers and wildflower honey but no real sense of sweetness in the aroma. A touch of fresh pear, slightly richer in than the Limestone. Dry and textured on the palate even with the sweetness (I usually find sweeter wines have a more rounded texture), a chalky, dry contrast with the actual sweetness in the wine. Opens to a little bit of white pepper. Dancing and expressive, that chalkiness brings it to perfect harmony. Extremely fresh acidity gives it an arrow-like heart in a scented exterior. It would be no exaggeration to say Weingut Keller consistently produce the finest dry Rieslings in the world, a fact proven year after year since Klaus-Peter Keller took over the reins from his father in 2001. Along with his wife Julia, Klaus-Peter has continued to prioritise the quality of dry wine produced at the estate, and these are now some of the most sought after and collected wines on the planet.
Sourced predominantly from the Hubacker and Kirchspiel 'GG' sites, the limestone presents incredibly concentrated fruit and spice along with a gentle touch of sweetness, Sabre-like acidity brought together in seamless balance.

2019 Max Ferdinand Richter Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Trockenbeerenauslese (375ml)Mosel, GERMANY$940. 00Bottle$11280.00 DozenABV: 6.5%Closure: CorkWeingut Max Ferdinand Richter produces world-class Rieslings from some of the most esteemed vineyards in the Mosel, and all production comes from estate holdings. The terroir of their steep vineyard sites is generally grey slate with different compositions of ferruginous (Brauneberg), mineral quartz (Veldenz) or clay (Graach, Wehlen, Mülheim) soils; those deeply influence character and flavour of the wines. In order to reduce quantity and increase concentration, pruning is severe and in prolific years a green harvest is carried out in August. The vintage is picked much later than that of most growers and is done entirely by hand. Three passes are done to select the best qualities to eliminate all inferior grapes and to keep perfect botrytis bunches or single berries for Auslese qualities and above. The same attention is paid to all vines from the QBAs on up through the Eisweins.
Other Reviews....
Based on single berries affected by an early botrytis, the raisin selection of the three-starred Auslese is the 2019 Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Trockenbeerenauslese. Intense, very precise and spicy on the nose, the 2019 displays concentrated peach, almond and biscuit as well as lemon chutney, tea and ginger aromas. Silky, refined and highly delicate on the palate, this is a super precise and elegant TBA with great precision, finesse and salinity. The sweetness is certainly palatable but balanced by the clarity, precision, finesse and seamless texture of this crystalline and stimulating TBA that is extremely hard not to score 100 points. Maybe later, after some years of bottle aging? This wine has all the potential to become a legend. Bottled with roughly 400 grams of acidity, 6.5% alcohol and high acidity that was at 16 grams per liter in the must stage. 70 liters produced. Drink 2035 - 2100.

Stephan Reinhardt - Wine Advocate (Oct 2020)This is packed with dried-fruit aromas, ranging from pineapple to dates and figs, but it remains finely nuanced, rather than drifting off into opulence and density. With aeration, some ceps/porcini character appears, too. A super elegant wine, in spite of the enormous concentration and the sweetness that comes with it. The playful, filigree finish makes it really stand out in this category. Drink or hold.

Stuart Pigott - jamessuckling.comThe 2019er Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Trockenbeerenauslese was made from fully-botrytized fruit picked at 210° Oechsle, and was fermented down to fully noble-sweet levels of residual sugar. It offers a hugely exotic nose made of baked pineapple, coconut, mango, starfruit, almond cream, dried fruits, and honeyed elements. The wine is hugely sweet and unctuous on the palate, where a whiff of volatile acidity adds pep to the structure. The finish is long and alluring, but also marked by a touch of volatile acidity at this early stage. This superb TBA may eventually exceed our high ratings, especially as the volatile elements withdraw into the background. What an impressive effort! Drink 2029-2069.

2019 Max Ferdinand Richter Brauneberger Juffer Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese (375ml)Mosel, GERMANY$74. 99Bottle$899.88 DozenABV: 7%Closure: CorkWeingut Max Ferdinand Richter produces world-class Rieslings from some of the most esteemed vineyards in the Mosel, and all production comes from estate holdings. The same attention is paid to all vines from the QBAs on up through the Eisweins.

From the overripe and botrytized berries of the Spätlese selection, the 2019 Brauneberger Juffer-Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese is intense and concentrated on the nose, but due to the sulfuric notes, it is far from being as terroir-driven as the Spätlese or even the Kabinett. The fruit is concentrated yet piquant, fresh and elegant on the palate and pure, refined and subtle on the finish due to the crystalline acidity and finesse that represents the JSU. This is an excellent Spätlese that needs at least a decade to age to its full finesse. Tasted at the domain in September 2020. Drink 2035 - 2070.

Stephan Reinhardt - Wine Advocate (Oct 2020)Plenty of exotic-fruit character from botrytis, but they haven’t made this refined Auslese loud, only more complex and tantalizing. Considerable concentration, but everything fits together so neatly that it comes off as restrained. Very complex, almost dry finish with a hint of vanilla pod. Delicious now, but so much aging potential. Drink or hold.

Stuart Pigott - jamessuckling.comThe 2019er Brauneberger Juffer-Sonnenuhr Auslese was made from partially botrytized fruit (1/3) picked at 115° Oechsle, and was fermented down to noble-sweet levels of residual sugar (125 g/l). It offers a gorgeous nose made of elderflower, cassis, white peach, coconut, almond paste, fresh pineapple, and loads of citrusy and minty elements. The wine proves stunningly tactile and subtle on the palate, where delicately creamy fruits mingle with ripe yet gorgeously juicy acidity. The finish is all about bright exotic fruits, citrusy elements, and fine notes of cream. This gorgeous sweet wine may seem almost irresistible now, but it will gain from a decade of aging as the sweetness will have receded and given way to more nuances. Drink 2029-2049.

From 80- to 90+-year-old vines in the original plot below the sundial, the 2019 Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Spätlese is very precise and fresh on the flinty, slatey and crisp fruit bouquet. Juicy-piquant and sweet on the palate, this is a tight and crispy, very intense yet still sulfuric Spätlese from a really great terroir. The fruit is still fresh and precise and was picked together with the dry GG selection, which is picked from the inner part with a higher acidity, whereas the Spätlese is from the outside berries that have more ripeness. The 2019 should be aged for at least 10 years. Tasted at the domain in September 2020. Drink 2030 - 2070.

Sourced in all the sections of the cru and picked with 270° Oechsle and perfect botrytis, the yellow-golden 2018 Brauneberger Juffer-Sonnenuhr Riesling Trockenbeerenauslese is deep, intense and refreshingly spicy and mineral on the compact and complex lime-zesty nose that reminds me of stewed apricots and sweet fig mustard with lemon zests. Incredibly rich, round and viscous but also finessed, fresh and vital on the palate, this is a highly elegant and perfectly balanced TBA with a long, intense and even stimulatingly vital finish. Compared to the filigreed, more crystalline Wehlener Sonnenuhr sibling, this is far more rich and oily textured, yet I can't avoid taking a large sip again and again, hedonist that I am! Thanks to the lower acidity, this is a smooth and sweet but still fine and delicate TBA that tastes fruity, fresh and highly digestible even at this early stage. All the components are already perfectly interwoven, and it's just a question of personal taste if you prefer to have this TBA sweet and smooth or matured and smooth. It's a marvelous wine in any case. It took a long ferment, until the end of June this year, which might have added a bit more complexity compared to the Wehlener Sonnenuhr. Tasted at the end of July and again in later August 2019 when the wine had already closed. Drink 2020 - 2090.

A whiff of volatile acidity quickly gives way to stunning elements of brown sugar, mango, candied pineapple, bitter lemon, raisin and cream. The wine is smooth yet stunningly multi-layered on the palate and leaves a gorgeously smooth yet precise feel of dried fruits and herbs in the long and juicy finish. The saturating sweetness in the finish still needs to integrate. It could then easily exceed our already very high expectations. Drink 2038-2068.

The Skilly Valley is a sub-region of Watervale. And the minerally character in the wine comes from the sandy loam soils over broken quartz. It’s quite a delicate wine, heavily scented with light florals and appley citrus notes with just a hint of musk stick. The palate is fine, and although delicate, has a tremendous driving intensity with that typical Riesling tension. It finishes long and picks up very subtle stone fruit nuances as it flows through. Drink 2025-2035.

Ray Jordan – WinePilot.comA sub-region of Watervale. You’d not expect 2025 to be a good vintage, given it was so dry, yet here we are. The proof is in the pudding (or glass as it may be).
My word this is a juicy wine. Green mango, lime and lemongrass, a spicy almost peppery top note. It has crunch and grip, lime and sherbet, definitely a sort of Thai salad sort of thing happening, and quite stony texture on a gently grippy finish of very good length. It’s maybe a little bit rugged, though I kind of like that. Flavour is not a problem for this wine, despite its very modest alcohol. Very nice. Drink 2025-2034.

The 2025 Skilly Valley Riesling is perhaps more of a predictable Clare Valley Riesling than the 2024 was, and by that I mean that this is classic lime, green apple, white pepper, fennel and green almonds. In the mouth, the wine is talcy and fine, chalky and fresh‚—it is possessed of that great succulence that is specific to Clare Valley Riesling. This is really impressive. By all accounts, 2025 was a challenging season for the lack of water and sustained heat, coupled with some damaging frosts leading in to the spring in 2024, however, none of the struggle is evident in this glass. This is excellent. 10.3% alcohol, sealed under screw cap. Drink 2025-2035.

Coming from vines planted back in the 1970s, the OLW Polish Hill River Riesling tends to be the formal, and perhaps slightly austere of the pair. Pretty classic stuff here, albeit you'd say this release is quite concentrated and potent in its fruit characteristics. Lemon-lime, sweet and tart at the same time, green apple, distinct blackcurrant notes, a little lemon oil and dashes of mandarin marmalade. Lots of talc here, too – powdery, lavender-like, and with a little bit of grip in texture. Nice one. Quietly complex. This should be singing with another year and onwards – and do wait if you can. Mike Bennie – James Halliday’s Australian Wine CompanionIf Polish Hill River represents the power of Clare Valley Riesling, Watervale represents the finesse, the purity. Nowhere is this better exhibited than in the 2025 vintage. While it was a challenging vintage, by all accounts, Riesling shone. It shows. Bright, lime green hues. Classic Watervale scents, arrestingly aromatic and delicate in jasmine, wildflowers, bath salts, fresh lime and citrus skin and apple. An intensity of lime flavour lies at the wine’s core, a Watervale trait, in sync with florals. It’s a vibrant, alive palate with an easy textural flow in lime, green apple, pear skin, touch of rosemary, Thai basil and wet slate minerality. Finely textured with powdery fine acidity. From a Clare vineyard in the Polish Hill River sub-region, owned by a couple of Adelaide heart surgeons, the guys only make this wine in top vintages. 2022 is most certainly that. Bright and expressive, this opens with vibrant citrus aromas of limes and grapefruit as well as quince, complemented by a distinct saline note reminiscent of oyster shells. On the palate, it is fresh and incisive with lively acidity. The texture is taut and tense, adding structure and balance to the crisp profile. JamesSuckling.comAn excellent bouquet filled with scents of white rose and blossoms, stony mineral suggestions, lemon and apple then a white spice and white peach quality. Fragrant and enticing. Taut, crisp and dry as the wine touches the palate, flavours of white fleshed fruits and citrus reflect the bouquet. Lengthy, salivating and delicious, a perfect aperitif expression and clearly an excellent choice with crunchy fresh appetizers. Best from late 2025 through 2034.

Yalumba’s Robert Hill Smith and Louisa Rose of Pewsey Vale & Heggies fame are intrinsically linked with Eden Valley Riesling. They had also long admired the potential of Tasmanian Riesling, so when the opportunity came up to work with a unique site of mature Riesling vines they jumped at it. Located in the Coal River valley, this small block of Riesling is hidden in the midst of larger plantings of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir vines.
Brilliant water like colour with a faint greenish tinge around the outskirts. Bursting from the glass with tremendous intensity are lime, citrus and green apple scents which are trailed by orange rind, wet steel and slatey mineral notes. Concentrated and carrying excellent textural volume yet super scrumptious in nature, lime, citrus and green apple fruits meld into a back half of orange rind, wet slate and flinty mineral elements. Crunchy acidity with a long, intensely flavoured finish that shows plenty of zest.
Drink over the next 6-8 years.

A ripper drink year on year.
This has all the energy and zip expected but with touches of brine and light cashew nut characters making landfall to enhance more classic lemon-lime, pink grapefruit and cumquat fruitiness. While zesty, a little chalky pucker in texture too. Spot on, quietly complex, a bit of inner concentration to make things hum and a cool, minerally finish. Right on. Drink 2025-2035+

Lime, orange blossom and mineral notes are also evident. Wonderfully concentrated and mouth filling yet zippy, the palate is awash with pear, lychee and rosewater flavours that are quite similar to Gewurztraminer. The 2024 Riesling is juicy and rounded, with a caress that reminds me of a Spätlese. It’s medium-sweet yet delicate with an almost powdery texture. Residual sugar has rounded its edges and padded out its light body. The finish, however, is succulent and textured, with a combination of firm acidity and phenolics providing the brush to sweep this up and hold it firmly in place. Aromas of apricots, lilac, freshly cooked orange, celery and the merest hint of spice linger on the fragrant finish. Drink 2025-2036.

From the Koerner family's Gullyview vineyard. Notable for its concentration of flavour, a big tick to start, freshness and general sense of vitality. It feels like a lot is going on in its compact textural space, with juicy red apples, ginger, green mango, quince and lime. Fresh as can be, frisky and yet a quiet savouriness under it all lending some charisma and counterbalance to the zing of that tangy acid. Immediately likeable, is the message, and a strong and distinct regional character, too. A winner. Drink by 2035.

Pear and perfume, lime, fennel and spice. Here’s a riper and rounder expression of Clare Riesling, though it still has a bit of crunch and energy, fine powdery texture, a bit nutty, with green apple and ginger flavour, and a long and dusty finish. Very nice. A heap of interest.

Another museum release riesling from the excellent Contours block of the Pewsey Vale vineyard, way up around 500m in the High Eden. A gentle mid-straw in the glass with aromas beginning to take on the complexity that we love from aged riesling. Bickford's lime cordial, citrus blossom and Christmas lily are joined by buttered brioche, washed rind cheese, pressed wildflowers, almond paste, petrichor and stone. Porcelain acidity provides clarity and cadence, and it is clear that this wine is in a great place, possibly heading to a greater one. Drink by 2040.

Ah, the wonders of Eden Valley Riesling as it just starts to enter its secondary phase. This one is beginning to show some toasty character, which you might expect with a wine that is seven years old. But it is hardly going to flip in the short term and it retains a youthful, vibrant edge highlighted by that strong mineral and lemony character that you might expect with a little bit of Eden Valley bath salts and dry talciness. Already a high degree of richness, but it’s held tight with control. Outstanding. Drink 2025-2035.

Walk into a bath house and you’ll be met with trickling water, essential oils and the feeling of calm, this too has the same effect. Lemon myrtle, lemongrass, bath salts and rainforest greens. Just like the cool sloping site. The Contours is a supreme wine from a rugged site, this brings together the poignancy of aged Riesling into a holistic white wine experience. Grilled chestnuts preserved citrus and slinky lines of thirst quenching acidity. It’s complex, textural and hella moreish. What a pleasure to sip and contemplate, and a total steal at that price. Drink now or allow it to gain even more detail with another 6-8 years in the cellar. Drink 2025-2033.

2025 Pewsey Vale Estate Single Vineyard RieslingEden Valley, South Australia, AUSTRALIA$22. 99Bottle$275.88 DozenCellar: Drink now - 8 Years (2025-2033)ABV: 11.5%Closure: StelvinIn 1839, shortly after his arrival from England, Joseph Gilbert started building a fine homestead in Eden Valley and planted the region’s first grapevines in 1847. Like so many vineyards in the 1920s and 30s, Pewsey Vale fell into disuse but, thankfully, its potential was rediscovered.
In 1961, pastoralist Geoffrey Angas Parsons became aware his property had once incorporated the region’s earliest vineyard and shared his discovery with good friend, and vigneron Wyndham Hill-Smith. Hill-Smith needed no further persuasion – work soon began on re-establishing Pewsey Vale Vineyard. Initially, 56 hectares of Riesling were planted in contoured rows. The several remaining hectares of these vines continue to provide fruit for The Contours Riesling. All plantings at Pewsey Vale Vineyard are propagated from the original 1847 vines.Classic Pewsey Vale Riesling at the top of it’s game.

What a beautiful example of Eden Valley Riesling is this estate Pewsey Vale wine. The nose is intense lemon with a minerally bath salts character, while the palate has that lemon rind edginess, balancing the deeply intense, linear and focused fruit that emerges from this high-altitude block. It retains a degree of tension with a slightly talcy character, and the finish is long and fine. Excellent wine. Drink 2025-2037.

Riesling sourced from a single vineyard way up around 490m elevation in Pewsey Vale. Classic Eden Valley characters from woe to go. Fresh limes, Christmas lily, citrus blossom, crushed stone, lemongrass, Bickford's lime cordial and ozone. Dry, precise and thirst-slakingly good drinking. Super stuff; we all need a bottle of this close at hand when the weather warms up. Drink by 2040.
