Riesling

One of the world's great grape varieties and the acknowledged king of German vineyards, also important in Alsace, Riesling goes through a number of ripening phases making it incredibly varied. Picked early it can form a base wine for Methode Champenoise; a little later, it makes a wonderfully crisp, aromatic lemon-lime filled dry white. A little riper the grapes produce an excellent, slightly sweet 'Spatlese' wine, later again an 'Auslese', and so on. In Australia, crisp, minerally, citrus-led styles dominate, with regions like South Australia, Victoria and Western Australia producing the finest examples. Fish, shellfish and crustaceans are perfect partners.

This release will take some bottle age, for sure, but if you were looking for a young riesling to drink right now, this would make an excellent choice. It offers excellent upfront flavour, a semblance of texture, noteworthy push through the finish and a general, all-round deliciousness. Lime, apple juice, apple seeds and slate characters are the drivers but the specifics aren’t so important. It drinks a treat, and that’s the thing. Drink 2022-2027+

The Great Southern wine region is one of the largest in Australia, it’s sub regions include the likes of Frankland River, Mount Barker and Porongurup. Over the last decade it’s reputation for producing world class Rieslings has developed to such an extent that it’s now a serious challenger to Clare Valley, making some of the country’s best Rieslings. The 2019 vintage delivered excellent growing conditions, with winter and spring being reasonably dry and summer holding cooler temperatures.

The fruit for this intensely flavoured Riesling was sourced from the highest slopes on the Skillogalee Estate, some 500 metres above sea level. Each contour/block of vines was picked as it reached its optimum ripeness and each parcel fermented separately. 2019 was a later vintage than recent years allowing plenty of time for flavour development.

The Sons of Eden crew does riesling well. It's a dry, limey singularity, impressively focused with a stony, composed air as it sails true on the palate. All the things you'd expect from an Eden Valley riesling are here: those Christmas lily and citrus blossom top notes, a splosh of Bickford's lime cordial, that umami that presents like the slow ache of a flake of sea salt melting on the tongue, the freshly squeezed lime juice and the surprising rate it disappears from the glass. It's great, refreshing drinking – of that there is no doubt. Drink by 2040.

I've written before how I like the 2024 Eden Valley rieslings. They are perhaps not as aromatically punchy as the norm but they are stony-pure with that familiar Christmas lily volume just turned down a notch. But that focused line, eh?! Like the stern but beautiful Norse goddess this wine is named after, it is formidable: bone dry, stoic and confident. Sourced from three vineyards – Petney, Roesler and Cranes Range – vines 25, 60+, 45+ years of age, respectively. You get a lot of old vine value in Riesling for a very modest price. I’m liking the 2023 vintage for SA Riesling, plenty of zip and purity is my feeling.
A floral kind of bath salts perfume, lemon and lime, a little lemongrass and spice. It’s juicy, but has plenty of flinty crunch, delivers flavour yet keeps itself trim and pure, with fine powdery grip and a tonic with a twist of lemon finish of fine length. Very good, and better still, it presents an each way bet; lovely to drink now, or later. Drink 2024-2032+

The 2021 Eden Valley vintage rolls on and it is fantastic to see a return to form to the finer riesling style that Eden Valley does so well. This is quite the classic release – its seems at first a picture of restraint but then that understated power unfurls to whack you between the eyes. Super pale in colour before roses lime, pear and bath salt aromas – all tight and focussed. The palate then carries quite a punch – a powerful core of stony, citrus fruits plus fresh yet silky acidity which drives a long and thirst-quenching finish. From the Avon Brae Vineyard, the vines planted '96, free-run juice fermented with cultured yeast. Combines purity and intensity with length and power, but you have to focus on the finish and aftertaste to unlock the vault holding the lime, lemon and passionfruit flavours which led to its gold medal at the Canberra International Wine Challenge '17. This has a long future awaiting those who are patient. Drink by 2032.

    $419.88 Dozen
    ABV: 12%
    Closure: Stelvin

The 2023 Single Vineyard Riesling delicately balances between being 'dry' and 'off-dry' (8.6g/l grams residual sugar), and achieves a remarkable equilibrium between acidity and fruitiness. All the grapes for this wine come from a single vineyard located in the Tea Tree sub-region of Coal River, which was planted on dark clay in 2004 with a vineyard density of 5000 vines per hectare. The grapes are carefully hand-picked, destemmed, and then undergo 8 hours of skin contact maceration before being pressed and transferred to tanks for fermentation. Fermentation is halted when the ideal sugar-to-acid balance is achieved, and the wine is left on lees for several months, with gentle stirring every two weeks.

    Other Reviews....
Fine riesling, verging on exceptional. Aromas of granny smith granita, lime sherbet, ginger and spiced quince. The acidity, a juicy balancing beam as the wine twists, turns and meanders across the wave of fruit intensity, staining the cheeks. A judicious dollop of sugar, draped across the finish mitigates severity, while promoting juiciness. Super length. Drink or hold. Screw cap.

This wine comes exclusively from Stargazer's own vineyards in the Tea Tree sub-region of the Coal River Valley, where the vines were planted in 2002. The soil here is clay loam with a high calcium content, which results in thicker grape skins and more flavor. The fruit is handpicked, destemmed, and left on the skins for 8 hours before gentle pressing. The juice is wild fermented in ceramic and concrete egg-shaped containers where it is left to age on lees for a further 10 months, before bottling at 1.2 grams of residual sugar.

    Other Reviews....
While there is slightly more volume to this than its riesling sibling, paradoxically it feels daintier, lighter-weighted and more ethereal, reminiscent of a drier Kabinett. More subtle aromas, too, of baking spice, tarte tatin and apple blossom. A creamy, subtle oak element, too. A delicate performer driven by forceful backing vocals of mineral pungency and a salty maritime punch. I'd love to drink this in 10 years. Drinkable now, but best from 2027. Screw cap.

    Notes from the producer....
This wine teeters on the brink between ‘dry’ and ‘off dry’, but simply put it’s just superbly balanced in terms of acid and fruit/RS. All the grapes are sourced from a single vineyard in the Tea Tree subregion of Coal River, planted in 2004 at a vineyard density 5000 vines per hectare. The soil type is predominantly dark clay on Jurassic dolerite.
Hand picked, destemmed and left on skins for 8 hours before being pressed off to both tank and seasoned barrel (10%) for fermentation. A small parcel of Riesling is also fermented on skins then added to the overall blend later. I stop the tank ferment when I feel the sugar to acid balance is right (approx two months) and then leave the wine on lees for 2 months, stirring fortnightly.
A Riesling with natural acid (2.92 PH) and with 7.4g grams residual it’s an absolute pleasure of a wine that showcases the potential of the Coal River for this variety.

    Notes from the producer....
Sourced from my own vineyards in the subregion of Tea Tree in the NW side of the Coal River Valley region planted in 2002. The soil here is brown dermosol on Jurassic dolerite which in layman’s terms is clay loam over ironstone with a high level of calcium, which promotes thick skins. I love the extra flavour from this.
This is my more ‘experimental’ expression of the variety, my goal here to showcase texture vs the more classic Single vineyard Riesling release.
Hand picked, destemmed and left on skins for 8 hours then pressed off and fermented in Ceramic egg then 10 months on lees post fermentation. Just 0.7 grams of residual sugar.
    Samantha Connew (September 2022)

    Other Reviews....
Ten months on lees in a ceramic egg has given great chalky texture as well as heightening the subtlety of lemon curd, dried flowers and briny oyster-shell tones. A taut acid line contributes tension and nervy energy to the sinewy palate and the bone-dry finish emphasises its slatey minerality. Drink 2022 - 2032.

Riesling in Australia.

Riesling is thought to have been introduced to New South Wales in the 1830s by the Macarthur's (pioneers of the Australian wool industry). German settlers brought the variety to the Barossa Valley in South Australia in the 1850's where the grape flourished. It's since found many new homes, such as Mt. Barker in Western Australia, the Clare Valley in South Australia, as well as Central and Southern Victoria. A tightrope of fruit and racy acidity when young, age-worthy examples develop honey and toast characteristics, sometimes accompanied by a distinct 'kerosene' note. Generally suited to cooler climates, examples from Grosset, Petaluma, Wilson Polish Hill, Dukes, Western Australia and Best's Great Western, Victoria are all worth seeking out.
