Riesling
One of the world's great grape varieties and the acknowledged king of German vineyards, also important in Alsace, Riesling goes through a number of ripening phases making it incredibly varied. Picked early it can form a base wine for Methode Champenoise; a little later, it makes a wonderfully crisp, aromatic lemon-lime filled dry white. A little riper the grapes produce an excellent, slightly sweet 'Spatlese' wine, later again an 'Auslese', and so on. In Australia, crisp, minerally, citrus-led styles dominate, with regions like South Australia, Victoria and Western Australia producing the finest examples. Fish, shellfish and crustaceans are perfect partners.

Fruit sourced from the Canberra District including estate-grown and the Hilltops region. Then, as is the Bryan Martin way, there’s some skin contact to bolster texture and fine phenolics before it all settles in vessels of concrete, ceramic and seasoned foudre. Flaxman Valley is the quarry for this expression. It's a savoury riesling, stony, dry and highlighted with gentle but omnipresent cashew savouriness and briny acidity. Complex, individual and distinct with a perfume of green apple, frangipani, sea spray and cashew. Flavours echo this character list, albeit the wine is a little loose-knit in the nicest sense and bolstered with that attractive briny, minerally acid profile. The finish shows a lick of that nuttiness and yeasty savouriness. It's an excellent offering. Drink in the vigour of youth. Drink by 2030.

This hits a new level in 2021, the finest release of this dry Eden Valley riesling to date. Aromas of sliced lemon and crushed stones with flickers of spice, too. The palate is finely detailed and has elegantly piercing lemon and ruby-grapefruit flavors that run so long and focused. Drink or hold. Screw cap.

Don’t be fooled by John Hughes’ quirky business name. Eden Valley's dominant juicy lime fruit comes through at speed, backs off towards the back palate before surging on the finish and aftertaste, with white peach and grapefruit providing a high wire of acidity and length. Drink to 2037.
