Riesling

One of the world's great grape varieties and the acknowledged king of German vineyards, also important in Alsace, Riesling goes through a number of ripening phases making it incredibly varied. Picked early it can form a base wine for Methode Champenoise; a little later, it makes a wonderfully crisp, aromatic lemon-lime filled dry white. A little riper the grapes produce an excellent, slightly sweet 'Spatlese' wine, later again an 'Auslese', and so on. In Australia, crisp, minerally, citrus-led styles dominate, with regions like South Australia, Victoria and Western Australia producing the finest examples. Fish, shellfish and crustaceans are perfect partners. Browse our top rated Riesling wines here.

2020 Max Ferdinand Richter Brauneberger Juffer Riesling Kabinett
    Mosel, GERMANY
    $56. 99
    Bottle
    $683.88 Dozen
    ABV: 8.5%
    Closure: Stelvin

Weingut Max Ferdinand Richter produces world-class Rieslings from some of the most esteemed vineyards in the Mosel, and all production comes from estate holdings. The terroir of their steep vineyard sites is generally grey slate with different compositions of ferruginous (Brauneberg), mineral quartz (Veldenz) or clay (Graach, Wehlen, Mülheim) soils; those deeply influence character and flavour of the wines.
In order to reduce quantity and increase concentration, pruning is severe and in prolific years a green harvest is carried out in August. The vintage is picked much later than that of most growers and is done entirely by hand. Three passes are done to select the best qualities to eliminate all inferior grapes and to keep perfect botrytis bunches or single berries for Auslese qualities and above. The same attention is paid to all vines from the QBAs on up through the Eisweins.

    Other Reviews....
Always from diverse plots scattered throughout the hillside, the 2020 Brauneberger Juffer Riesling Kabinett was harvested in two passes about three weeks apart (about 20% was picked late). This is clear but intense and elegant on the nose that shows a finely flinty and intensely fruity but always finessed and crystalline, slate-scented bouquet. On the palate, this is an intense and juicy sweet yet also piquant, stimulating and salty Juffer Kabinett with fine, just-ripe phenolic grip and ripe and mouth-filling fruit. The wine was aged two-thirds in steel and one-third in cask and was bottled with 8.5% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted from AP 4421 in November 2021. Drink 2021 - 2060.

A succulent Kabinett, brimming with peach and mirabelle aromas, the racy acidity making it extremely refreshing and pushing the slatey finish out there a long way. And the further you follow it the drier it becomes. Drink or hold.

The 2020er Brauneberger Juffer Riesling Kabinett was made from fruit picked at 80° Oechsle on 50-year-old vines and was fermented down to fruity-styled levels of residual sugar (45 g/l). It offers a gorgeous nose made of white peach, herbs, and fine spices. The wine feels slightly sweet on the palate at first before a great feel of citrusy zest lifts up the flavors in the finish. The aftertaste is simply stunning, being at the same time lightfooted, gorgeously racy, mouthwatering, and packed with flavors. This gorgeous success now really only needs a little bit of patience for the touch of creamy sweetness to integrate. Drink 2030-2050.

From predominantly 80+-year-old vines cultivated in the lower and upper part of the slope and therefore partly (25%) harvested four weeks apart, the 2020 Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Kabinett offers the typically pure and mineral, salty and stony notes of the famous WSU that already comes as an uncompromisingly pure and flinty, citric-scented wine of remarkable complexity and tension on the nose. The palate starts fresh and piquant, very nervy and vital, with lots of salt and lingering mineral tension. In the end, there is nothing of the generous, luscious character of the WSU but all the purity, tension and salinity. This is a complex and exciting long-distance runner that will always fascinate but even more so in eight to 10 years. The 2020 was aged in casks and steel (50/50) and is a true classic that is far apart from most of the Kabinetts from this marvelous terroir. This is, again, a Must Buy of the vintage. Bottled with 7.5% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted from AP 1921 in November 1121. Drink 2030 - 2070.

A fabulous Kabinett with all the floral finesse for which this site is famous. Real concentration married to wonderful delicacy. So much peachy fruit, but not a jot too loud. Very long, energetic yet silky finish. From at least 80-year-old vines. Drink or hold.

The 2020er Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Kabinett was made from fruit picked at 78° Oechsle on up to 100-year-old un-grafted vines and was fermented down to fruity-styled levels of residual sugar (48 g/l). It offers a superb nose made of white flower, smoky elements, herbs, white flowers, and fine spices. The wine is subtly creamy yet so incredibly light-footed on the palate. Loads of minerals, floral flavors, and finely spicy elements add to the incredibly playful presence. The finish is airy, intense, and incredibly long. What a massive success! Drink 2030-2045.

Coming from 80- to 90-year-old vines, the 2020 Elisenberger Riesling Spätlese is based on the last grapes harvested by Team MFR, with still moderate must weight. Fermented 100% in casks, this wine shows a clear but still reductive nose with ripe, intense and elegant fruit aromas as well as flint notes. On the palate, this is still an extremely young, vital and tensioned Riesling with ripe and juicy fruit but still many restrictions and serious grip. Promising but far too young to be fairly rated, two-thirds of the 2020 was fermented in casks and one-third in steel. 7.5% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted from AP 1921 in November 2021. It offers a simply stunning nose made of white peach, apple, pear, passion fruit, and floral elements. The wine is beautifully juicy and animating on the palate and leaves a stunning feel of racy juicy fruits in the long finish. Harvested at about the same time as the Grosses Gewächs (GG) and thus about four weeks after the Kabinett Rieslings, the 2020 Brauneberger Juffer-Sonnenuhr Riesling Spätlese opens with a pure, fresh and remarkably delicate slate bouquet that is already singing. On the palate, the wine is lush yet filigreed and finessed and provided with delicate, lingering salinity and finely concentrated, perfectly ripe fruit. The 2020er Brauneberger Juffer-Sonnenuhr Riesling Spätlese was made from fruit picked at 89° Oechsle and was fermented down to fruity-styled levels of residual sugar (80 g/l). It offers a beautiful nose made of quince, pear, melon, aniseed dried herbs, apricot blossom, whipped cream, and smoky elements. The wine proves surprisingly creamy given its overall structural lightness on the palate and leaves a juicy and still slightly squared feel in the gorgeously multi-layered finish. This Spätlese could well prove even better than anticipated as it develops more cut with age. Drink 2030-2050.

From vines about 100 years old from a parcel below the sundial, just down the Moselle, and aged in fuder, the 2020 Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Spätlese is deep, intense and complex but also subtle on the refined and elegant, almost ethereal nose that intermingles perfectly ripe and healthy fruit aromas with notes of crushed stones. Lush and piquant on the palate with some fine tannins and very discreet new(er) oak notes, this is a vibrantly fresh and stimulatingly salty, well-structured WSU that is still far too young to show its true merits. As one of Germany's oldest wineries, the history of this iconic estate dates back to 966, when wines were mainly made for the nearby Monastery. Fast forward to today, fifth and sixth generation Carl von Schubert and his son Maximin are leading the estate carefully managing three of the most highly regarded Grand Cru vineyards in the region: Abtsberg, Bruderberg and Herrenberg.

Brilliant water like colour with a greenish tinge around the outskirts. Aromas of ripe limes, red apples and citrus are trailed by hints of honeysuckle, quince and light mineral. Fresh and pure, lime, red apple and subtle honeysuckle flavours fill the mouth over traces of quince finishing dry to off dry and minerally. Good length with a medium to long conclusion.

The 2023 Meadowbank Riesling is made from a mix of an estate block, planted in 1974, and a newer block of German Riesling clones. The cool climate here in the sheltered valley produces exceptional fruit. Winemaker Peter Dredge splits the fermentation between stainless steel tanks for freshness and old French oak barrels for added complexity and texture. The result is a wine where high acidity and a touch of residual sugar come together in perfect harmony, creating a captivating and delicious wine.

The beautiful Meadowbank on the upper Derwent River is primarily a grape grower, with 52ha of vines employed in various ways since 1976; only enough for 800 dozen directed to wines contract-made by Peter Dredge. There’s a distinct Germanic character about this wine, though of course it’s also very Tasmanian too.
Juicy stone fruit, honey and white flowers, lemon curd, lime, a little spice, and a subtle mineral/petrol note. It’s intense and flavoursome, really bursts through the mouth, green apple mouth-watering acidity, wonderful chalky grip to texture, and a kiss of sweetness on a very long and zingy finish. Is that some ginger in the mix too? It’s all the things, and also, it tastes very pure. Top shelf, though comes with the caveat that you have to like them on the more piercing side. It’s been a while in between Mesh’s (though not Resch’s) for me. I last checked in on 2008, and last bought the 2002 vintage, when it was quite a thing to be rushed at. Way to make me feel old.
It’s a very good release, I think. Perfume of flowers, kaffir lime and lemongrass, tight and crunchy with juicy classic lemon/lime flavours, a steeliness and river pebble and talc kind of texture, a clean line of acidity, and grip and precision on a long dry finish, drizzle of citrus to encourage further drinking. No problem cracking this now. It’s excellent. Drink 2019-2029+

After almost three decades of shared experience in the wine industry, Bernice Ong and Julian Forwood decided to have a crack at their own venture sourcing fruit mainly from high quality vineyards in McLaren Vale to produce wines under their Ministry of Clouds label. Further broadening their portfolio they also added other varieties including Riesling from the Clare Valley.
2022 was the second year in a row to experience a cool growing season in the Clare Valley resulting in intensely flavoured Rieslings with healthy natural acidity and exceptional length.

    Scintillating Clare Valley Riesling.

Brilliant water like core with distinct highlights of green skirting the edges. Explosive aromatics of lime, citrus and green apple leap out of the glass trailed by some orange rind, chalky talc and flinty mineral notes. Zesty lemon, lime and Granny Smith apple fruits burst across the scrumptious palate, searing acidity providing laser like focus and tension to the concentrated fruit profile. Dry, steely mineral infused finish with some flinty chalk like elements lingering on the long super crunchy aftertaste.

Free-run juice cold-settled and cool fermented. Obviously dodged most of the rain: this has an exceptionally rich, layered and complex palate, acidity piercing the veil of citrus fruit on the lingering finish and aftertaste.

One of Clare Valley’s stalwarts, the first Mitchell Watervale Riesling was released in 1977. Brilliant pale straw colour with greenish tinged edges and a watery hue. Jumping out of the glass are intense lime and red apple scents which are followed by some citrus, subtle wet slate and mineral notes. Flooding the mouth are concentrated lime and citrus fruits with notions of green apple, wet steel, chalky talc and a saline like minerality lending further nuance across the back half. Power and textural volume are counterpointed by zippy acidity. Finishes dry, long and zesty.

Flavour. Texture. Precision. Poise. A scintillating riesling of strong regional character, yet details of citrusy fruit, saline minerality, faint nutty savouriness and talc-like textural pucker. Fantastic. It's a highly perfumed expression with extreme length, vitality and freshness with drinkability now and a sense that time in the cellar will bode very, very well. Straight up delicious, with plenty going on. Mitchell delivers the goods with this variety, and the 2023 release is a belter. Kudos. Drink by 2035.

The wine is jubilant with native florals and citrus zest. Lime sorbet, fig leaf and Lemon Myrtle. There is a woody smell of sandalwood and a base note of vanilla sugar. The freshness of cut celery and green apple peel leads to a pithy lace like texture with a crunchy crisp finish. Acidity flows along the palate and lime oil lingers on the finish. There is always an added layer of phenolic tension in this wine and once again it delivers the aromatics of the Clare Valley with the added details of great wine making. Drink now or will cellar well for 8-10 years. Serve with butterflied spatchcock and preserved lemon. Drink 2023-2033.

I’ve not tried these wines for some years, so nice to try them again.
Maybe not your average Clare Valley Riesling here, maybe a little more Germanic, if you don’t mind me. Here we have apple, lime and lemongrass, with a jasmine flower thing. It’s juicy, all ginger, lime and lemongrass, quite spicy, fleshy too with rich mint and apple flavour in the mix. Texture is gently chalky and something of a highlight, cashew, aniseed and exotic spice. Finish is excellent, maybe a little sweetness too by way of lime cordial. Zesty. Lovely wine. Drink 2023-2032+

This is a delicious wine, with a golden yellow hue inflected with lime at the edges as a paean to the joys of mid-life. Quince marmalade, lime, ginger, cumquat and candied citrus of all descriptions beam from the glass, reverberating on a palate that is both layered, slightly warm vintage skinsy and yet, riding a riesling undercarriage of vibrant acidity. The ripeness of the fruit is compelling, almost suggestive of a tad of botrytis. This wonderful riesling represents the apogee of a tweak to the regional approach, having been fermented in 30hl foudre before spending 12 months on lees. This is a far more spicy, complex, richer Germanic take than the stainless steel Clare Valley norm, yet the Clare's lime splice notes remain unmistakable. Drink by 2022.

If you can count on something, it is that the Mount Horrocks Rieslings are on point every vintage that goes by. This 2022 Watervale Riesling is as tight and as focused as I've seen it, and the laser beam of acidity that points across the mouth and down into the throat is as pronounced as Batman's Klieg light over Gotham. The wine is restrained and determined in the mouth, outlaying fleshy lime zest, preserved lemon, green apples and crushed chalk. It is a marvel, and we know these wines age with ease, especially under the STELVIN closure. Drink it whenever it brings you pleasure. Drink 2022-2047.

Sourced from the Brysky vineyards in Watervale, the 2021 vintage in Clare Valley was a mild one, allowing grapes to produce flavour ripeness prior to sugar ripeness. Production quality and yields were both high.
Brilliant very pale straw almost water like colour with a light tinge of green to the outskirts and a watery hue. Pronounced lemon and lime scents meld into orange rind, wet steel and flinty mineral notes. Flooding the palate with terrific intensity are mouth watering lime and lemon fruits which are accompanied by crunch granny smith apple, talc and flinty mineral characters. Outstanding drive finishing dry and crisp with a long aftertaste that has a zingy feel to it.

Watervale in the Clare Valley is home to some of Australia’s best’s Rieslings. It’s here that Ben Riggs sources fruit from the Churinga vineyard to produce this zesty lemon lime filled Riesling.

A great expression of a crisp, tangy Watervale Riesling.

Riesling in Australia.

Riesling is thought to have been introduced to New South Wales in the 1830s by the Macarthur's (pioneers of the Australian wool industry). German settlers brought the variety to the Barossa Valley in South Australia in the 1850's where the grape flourished. It's since found many new homes, such as Mt. Barker in Western Australia, the Clare Valley in South Australia, as well as Central and Southern Victoria. A tightrope of fruit and racy acidity when young, age-worthy examples develop honey and toast characteristics, sometimes accompanied by a distinct 'kerosene' note. Generally suited to cooler climates, examples from Grosset, Petaluma, Wilson Polish Hill, Dukes, Western Australia and Best's Great Western, Victoria are all worth seeking out.
