Riesling

One of the world's great grape varieties and the acknowledged king of German vineyards, also important in Alsace, Riesling goes through a number of ripening phases making it incredibly varied. Picked early it can form a base wine for Methode Champenoise; a little later, it makes a wonderfully crisp, aromatic lemon-lime filled dry white. A little riper the grapes produce an excellent, slightly sweet 'Spatlese' wine, later again an 'Auslese', and so on. In Australia, crisp, minerally, citrus-led styles dominate, with regions like South Australia, Victoria and Western Australia producing the finest examples. Fish, shellfish and crustaceans are perfect partners. Browse our top rated Riesling wines here.

2021 Hofgut Falkenstein Krettnacher Euchariusberg Riesling Kabinett (Kugel Peter)
    Mosel, GERMANY
    $69. 99
    Bottle
    $839.88 Dozen
    Closure: Cork

The Weber family of Hofgut Falkenstein have been making ultra-traditional Rieslings in the Saar district of the Mosel region since the mid-eighties; there they farm about 9 hectares in and around the villages of Niedermennig and Krettnach. Erich, the family winzer (winegrower in german) works alongside his middle son Johannes, who has joined him full-time in the vineyards and cellar in recent years. Ever since there has been more of a focus on Rieslings with residual sugar. The emphasis on their work is in the vineyard, where no pesticides, herbicides or fertilizers are employed and cover crops are grown to encourage biodiversity and, when necessary, competition with the vines for water.
Through a straightforward approach to winemaking the Weber craft light, distinctive and racy Rieslings, with well-integrated acidity from low yields and old vines, and bottled traditionally by the cask.

The 2021er Krettnacher Euchariusberg Riesling Kabinett Kugel Peter (the reference to this internal cask name is provided in small print on the label after the AP number) was harvested at 84° Oechsle on 50-year-old grafted vines in the prime Gross Schock sector of the vineyard, which was classified in the highest category on the old taxation maps, and was fermented down to barely fruity-styled levels of residual sugar (42 g/l). It offers a beautifully refined nose made of white peach, lemon peel, mint, floral elements, and fine smoke elements. The wine is superbly playful and racy on the palate and leaves a stunningly vibrant feel of fresh orchard fruits and fine herbal elements in the long and multi-layered finish. This is a gorgeous and vibrant in the long finish. Drink 2028-2041.

The 2021er Krettnacher Euchariusberg Riesling Kabinett Alte Reben Gisela (the reference to this internal cask name is provided in small print on the label after the AP number) was harvested at 84° Oechsle in a parcel still planted with 70-80-year-old un-grafted vines in the prime Gross Schock sector of the vineyard, which was classified in the highest category on the old taxation maps, and was fermented down to barely fruitystyled levels of residual sugar (40 g/l). It offers a stunning nose of citrusy fruits, cassis, floral elements, apricot blossom, wet stone, and smoke. The wine proves incredibly deep and packed with orchard and citrusy fruits on the subtly creamy yet racy palate. The bright sense of raciness makes for an off-dry and incredibly animating feel in the hugely persistent finish. This is remarkable. Drink 2029-2041.

The 2021er Krettnacher Euchariusberg Riesling Spätlese Förster (the reference to this internal cask name is provided in small print on the label after the AP number) was made from clean fruit harvested early at 87° Oechsle from vines planted in the 1960s in the prime Gross Schock sector of the vineyard and was fermented down to fully fruity-styled levels of residual sugar (55 g/l). It offers a beautiful nose of creamy gooseberry, grapefruit, quince, bitter lemon, chalky minerals, and smoke. The wine is superbly zesty yet also subtly creamy on the palate. The finish has the vibrancy of an Eiswein with the fruitiness of a great Spätlese. The acidity strikes through right into the finish and proves incredibly animating. We would wait a few years to let the wine develop more presence. Then, it could prove even better than expected: It is that impressive! Drink 2029-2041.

From another old-vines single plot that is located at the peak of the hill on gray slate and quartzite soils, the 2019 Krettnacher Euchariusberg Riesling Auslese #5 Förster opens with stony, herbal and super ripe Riesling notes on the nose, indicating a certain over-ripeness, possibly with a touch of botrytis. Juicy and elegant on the palate, this is a charming and digestible Auslese with a firm finish and some grippy tannins. More rustic than fine.

The 2019er Krettnacher Euchariusberg Riesling Auslese Förster (the reference to this internal cask name is provided in small print on the label) was made from clean fruit harvested early at 92° Oechsle from young vines in the prime Gross Schock sector of the vineyard, and was fermented down to sweet levels of residual sugar (76 g/l of residual sugar). It offers a gorgeous nose made of white peach, pear, apricot blossom, white minerals, herbs, and slate. The wine starts off with a touch of whipped cream on the palate before a great kick of zesty acidity and citrusy fruits brings raciness and energy to the experience. The stunning finish proves tart, sweet, and above all packed with fresh fruits and herbs. This amazing “drinking Auslese” in the making proves simply stunningly light and refreshing!

    Inniskillin Reserve Riesling Icewine (375ml)
    Niagara Peninsula, CANADA
    $95. 00
    Bottle
    $1140.00 Dozen
    Notes sourced from Inniskillin

Excellent conditions in the 2015 growing year set the Icewine grapes up for success. With a few freeze/thaw occurrences throughout the winter months the sugar levels and flavour concentrations were at their peak just prior to the Icewine grape harvest. The consistent frigid weather allowed us to reach our optimum harvesting temperature which enables us to maintain our high quality standards with the desired sugar levels and acidities in good balance. January 4th, 2016 brought ideal temperatures of -10º C to begin Inniskillin’s thirty-second Icewine harvest. One of the quickest on record, Vineyard Director Gerald Klose and Winemaker Bruce Nicholson began early morning and finished picking all estate fruit and receiving all grower fruit by the end of the day January 5th.

This unique Canadian product was harvested at the height of Canada’s crisp winter. Naturally frozen on the vine and then picked when the temperature drops to a frigid -10°C. Only a few drops of concentrated nectar can be squeezed from each bunch. The juice is then slowly fermented to achieve a rich, specialty wine know as Icewine. This 2015 Riesling Icewine was fermented at a cool 15°C for 21 days until a perfect balance of sugar, alcohol and acidity remained.

Tasting notes: Aromatics of fresh orange, lemon, lime and spice . On the palate this rich and elegant Icewine boasts smooth texture and concentrated flavours of peach and apricot along with a hint of clove balanced by a crisp, lively acidity.Residual sugar 235 g/l.

Brilliant pale straw colour with a very distinctive tinge of green around the edges and a watery hue. Lime and citrus aromas are rounded out with a whiff of lemon butter, oily kerosene like notes and toast. There’s an oily textural feel to the palate, flavours of lemon and citrus to the fore over subtle toast, lemon butter and kerosene characters. Finishes dry with crisp acidity and a long citrus dominated aftertaste.

In a word: excellent. This 2022 Watervale Riesling has soapstone, lavender, lime flesh, pumice stone phenolics and very fine, curvy acidity. It sits well in the mouth, and it lingers through into a long finish. It's incredible value for the money from one of the shining star producers in the region, going from strength to strength under the young/fresh leadership of the third-generation Barry brothers (Sam, in commercial, Tom, winemaker). It won a trophy at the QLD Wine Show 2022. Drink 2022-2042.

The 2022er Graacher Himmelreich Riesling Auslese GK was made from shriveled rather than botrytized fruit and was fermented down to noble sweet levels of residual sugar. It offers a superbly refreshing and pure nose of candied lime, tangerine, pineapple, spearmint, lavender, cassis, acacia, lime tree, rosemary, and dried apricot. The wine proves superbly concentrated and focused and leaves a very intense and almost broad feel of honeyed exotic fruits. The finish has huge length and intensity. The 2022 Riesling Graacher Himmelreich Auslese Goldkapsel, made with about 30% botrytis, does not give much away on its closed nose. The 2022 Riesling Bernkasteler Badstube Kabinett is still slightly reduced and yeasty, but underneath that, chervil- and green apple-scented freshness comes through, fine and bright. The palate is gently sweet and has notions of Turkish apple tea and a little tea tannin, countered by rounded but delicate freshness. Riesling in Australia.

Riesling is thought to have been introduced to New South Wales in the 1830s by the Macarthur's (pioneers of the Australian wool industry). German settlers brought the variety to the Barossa Valley in South Australia in the 1850's where the grape flourished. It's since found many new homes, such as Mt. Barker in Western Australia, the Clare Valley in South Australia, as well as Central and Southern Victoria. A tightrope of fruit and racy acidity when young, age-worthy examples develop honey and toast characteristics, sometimes accompanied by a distinct 'kerosene' note. Generally suited to cooler climates, examples from Grosset, Petaluma, Wilson Polish Hill, Dukes, Western Australia and Best's Great Western, Victoria are all worth seeking out.
