Riesling
One of the world's great grape varieties and the acknowledged king of German vineyards, also important in Alsace, Riesling goes through a number of ripening phases making it incredibly varied. Picked early it can form a base wine for Methode Champenoise; a little later, it makes a wonderfully crisp, aromatic lemon-lime filled dry white. A little riper the grapes produce an excellent, slightly sweet 'Spatlese' wine, later again an 'Auslese', and so on. In Australia, crisp, minerally, citrus-led styles dominate, with regions like South Australia, Victoria and Western Australia producing the finest examples. Fish, shellfish and crustaceans are perfect partners.

From vines planted in 1911 or earlier in the Laichen lieu-dit, Loosen's 2019 Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling GG Alte Reben is sylphlike, highly delicate and fine in its multilayered, fruity, floral and crunchy/flinty bouquet that reveals very fine slate aromas and even salty notes. Absolutely fabulous! Silky textured, lush and generous yet highly finessed, this is an intense yet subtle, pure and minerally fresh Riesling from one of the Mosel's finest vineyard. The finish is long, fresh, piquant and sustainably structured as well as salty. Irresistible. Drink 2024 - 2050.

Fruit is sourced from contracted growers located throughout the Mosel River Valley who work very closely with brothers Ernst and Thomas Loosen to achieve excellent fruit quality and concentration every vintage.
Brilliant very pale straw colour with greenish tinged edges and a watery hue. Blossoming from the glass are scents of ripe lime, red apple and honeysuckle followed by orange blossom, mandarin and a light minerality. Delicious red apple and fresh lime fruits decorate the mouth underpinned by racy acidity. Subtle notions of honeysuckle, light infusions of orange blossom and a spritzy minerality make an appearance on the back half. Finishes slightly off dry, zesty and long.

Stuart Pigott - jamessuckling.comThe 2016er Wehlener Sonnenuhr GG is made from very old un-grafted vines in the prime Gewann Laychen (central part) and Sandpichter (near Zeltingen) sectors, and was fermented with ambient yeasts and aged in oak for almost 12 months. The wine develops a great nose of mirabelle, tangerine, brown sugar, mint, flowers, whipped cream, and fine spices. The wine proves rather firm and structured on the palate and leaves a fully spicy feel in the long finish. This is nicely made in a fruity and elegantly light style. Drink 2021-2031.

Jean Fisch & David Rayer - Mosel Fine WinesApple and white peach are strongly marked by the piquancy of their seeds and pits but fortunately preserve a modicum of primary juiciness. There is a greater sense of stuffing and fullness here than in other Loosen 2016 Grosse Gewächse, but less animation or sense of detail. The bitter side of vanilla bean points toward the Einzellage of origin, and there is a prominent undertone of wet stone in the seriously sustained finish. But, apropos of “serious,” don’t look to this wine for charm! Like past installments, the 2016 issues principally from vines planted in 1911 in an unconstructed portion of the Sonnenuhr Einzellage known as Laychen.” Loosen maintains that a focal-point location, combined with the abundance of finely morcellated slate from which it gets its name, makes Laychen the site in the Wehlener Sonnenuhr with the finest potential, which he finds already reflected in the present wine. I can’t identify here the surplus of “finesse” or “elegance” – vis-à-vis, say, the corresponding Treppchen, Würzgarten or Himmelreich – that Loosen as well as some of my fellow critics typically perceive in his Grosse Gewächse from Wehlener Sonnenuhr. I tasted this one late in July 2017, approximately two months ahead of its anticipated bottling date.

Stuart Pigott - jamessuckling.comAnimating and vividly bright for an Auslese, this displays an impressive concentration of fresh strawberry and kiwi laced with lime. Honeysuckle adds alluring inner-mouth perfume, and a glossy, subtly creamy texture serves as the perfect foil for the wine’s bracing brightness and infectious juiciness. Where the corresponding Sonnenuhr conveyed an extremely subtle impression of botrytis, here I can scarcely find any such impression – not that I’m complaining! The vibrant finish delivers tingling brightness of citrus, an invigorating crunch of strawberry seeds, wafting florality and a faint slick of quince jelly to accompany its irrepressible fresh fruitiness. This product of November 30 and December 5 pickings at multiple sites (Erdener Herrenberg prominent among them) delivers a slightly sweet-sour meld of green apple and apple candy with glazed pineapple. It displays prominent glycerol and considerable sense of stuffing to help buffer its blazing, penetrating, tangy brightness, and finishes with penetrating if edgy and only moderately complex persistence. I would permit it a year or two to settle itself, but given Eiswein’s caprices, I wouldn’t lose track of any bottles I cellared. Drink 2019 - 2025.

David Schildknecht - VinousThe 2016er Riesling Eiswein was made from fruit harvested at approx. 120° Oechsle in Bernkastel, Erden and Ürzig on both November 29 and November 30, and was fermented down to noble-sweet levels of residual sugar (143 g/l). It develops a beautifully zesty and fresh nose of candied grapefruit, orange jelly, and spices, joined by riper notes of quince, pear puree, and almond cream after some airing. The wine is superbly balanced and refined on the palate, and leaves a rather pure and smooth feel in the very long and light finish. The sweetness still dominates the acid core in the after-taste at this stage, but this should change after a few years of cellaring. Drink 2024-2036.

100% Riesling from blue Devonian slate soils and ungrafted vines with an average age of 60 years. The vineyard is sustainably farmed, according to strict German environmental regulations. This 2022 Magpie Hill Reserve Riesling is the first under new ownership, and it leads with a distinctly different nose than usual. It's challenging to pin down, but here goes: in place of the pristine white flowers and talc that is expected, there is swirling ash/embers, straw/hay, bison grass and graphite/bitumen and a pronounced petrichor/ozone character leads the charge. Behind it are pencil shavings, Dispirin (aspirin), the crackle of summer grass and oxalis. It's salty and mineral, gray and rocky, austere and sleek. Whether it's the season or not, this is a change in style for the Magpie Hill Reserve. Very different indeed. Drink 2022-2037.

From a single vineyard, whole-bunch pressed and fermented solely in tank to preserve the pristine freshness endemic to the rieslings from the area. A super-floral nose leads into a tense and citrus-driven palate. The acidity is saline and omnipresent, curling and flicking around the fruit, shaping it all through the long finish. This has already developed and grown so much in the bottle between this glass and the last (a couple of months prior), that it surely has a very long road ahead of it. White pepper, lime flesh and laser-like precision through the finish. Layered and dappled – gorgeous. Drink by 2041.

The 2021er Riesling Scharzhof is a fruity-styled wine made from the Estate’s holdings in the Saarburger Rausch, the Oberemmeler Rosenberg, the Wiltinger Kupp, and the Wiltinger Braunfels. This white-yellow colored wine offers a stunning nose of citrusy fruits, white peach sorbet, mint, cassis, and smoke. It offers a superbly bright acidity which is beautifully balanced by fruitiness on the palate. The finish is juicy and screams for more: What a great success! We would opt to wait a little bit to give the wine the time to develop more aromatic precision. Drink 2026-2036.

The 2021er Wiltinger Braune Kupp Riesling Kabinett is a fruity-styled wine with a subtle nose of peach, citrusy fruits, herbs, and a hint of creaminess and apricot blossom. The wine proves incredibly playful and precise on the palate, where its creamy side is wrapped into beautiful acidic and fruity elements. The finish is simply stunningly pure, focused, and silky. A kick of acidity then provides the right freshness and elegance to the aftertaste. This Kabinett is a huge success! Drink 2029-2041.

2020 Egon Muller - Le Gallais Wiltinger Braune Kupp Riesling SpatleseMosel, GERMANY$265. 00Bottle$3180.00 DozenABV: 8.5%Closure: StelvinOther Reviews....
Even as we get to Spätlese level in the present collection, there is a delightfully cooling aspect to the 2020 Riesling Wiltinger Braune Kupp Spätlese A.P. #5 Le Gallais, here engendered by pear and honeydew melon laced with brown spices, but also lime, mint and basil. The buoyant midpalate impression is succulent as well as silken, with suggestions of quince preserves and marzipan emphasizing the ripeness and very lightly botrytized nature of the fruit without sacrificing the cooling elements or citric brightness. Somehow the lusciously lingering finish manages to be stimulating yet soothing and caressing. Citrus zest, cinnamon and mace serve for welcome counterpoint, but here is one of those rare instances at this address where I have the impression of slight excess sweetness that needs time to integrate. Drink 2024-2042.

David Schildknecht - VinousComplex, red-apple and red-plum nose with delicate spice. Very ripe, but retains noble discretion, the succulence married to great structure. Long, creamy finish, in which the grape sweetness is already beautifully integrated. Drink or hold.

Stuart Pigott - JamesSuckling.comThe 2020er Wiltinger braune Kupp Riesling Spätlese AP 05 was fermented down to sweet levels of residual sugar. It proves rather restrained and even reduced at first and needs quite some time to reveal some ripe, luscious, and very complex scents of pineapple, orange peel, mango, pear, a touch of quince, blackberry, almond cream, and a whiff of honey already lurking in the background. The wine proves highly fruity, smooth, and yet delicate on the palate but reveals a more spicy and herbal side in the focused, persistent, and intense finish. Sweetness still dominates the aftertaste of this wine with Auslese presence. This beauty will really only shine in a decade. Drink 2033-2060+.

2020 Egon Muller Scharzhofberger Riesling SpatleseMosel, GERMANY$450. 00Bottle$5400.00 DozenABV: 8%Closure: StelvinOther Reviews....
The 2020 Riesling Scharzhofberger Spätlese A.P. #6 reflects numerous parcels and pickings with largely healthy fruit but slight botrytis influence. Quince and white peach hover between fresh and jellied, overlain with heady, musky perfume of peony and narcissus. But there are also elements of honeydew and mint – especially on the polished, delicate palate – to supply the cooling side to flavors that is familiar from other Egon Müller 2020s. The superbly sustained finish soothes yet invigorates and refreshes, with musky and chamomile floral billowing, cooling traces of mint, and lightly stimulating hints of wintergreen and cress. There is no question that this wine has an especially serious future, even by exalted Scharzhof standards. Drink 2021-2050.

Stuart Pigott - JamesSuckling.comThe 2020er Scharzhofberger Riesling Spätlese AP 06 was fermented down to sweet levels of residual sugar. It proves still quite reduced at first (smoke, marine herbs and sea breeze, and bacon driven scents) before gradually revealing its amazingly complex nose made of spices, white flowers, vineyard peach, cassis, mint lozenge, orange peel, apricot, and star fruit. The wine proves intense and beautifully focused on the intense yet impeccably balanced palate. Despite all the intensity and complexity at play, the wine remains stunningly fresh and light-footed right into the finish. The minute-long aftertaste is all about deep citrusy fruits and spices. This Spätlese is an incredible success! Drink 2030-2060.

2020 Egon Muller Scharzhofberger Riesling KabinettMosel, GERMANY$350. 00Bottle$4200.00 DozenABV: 9%Closure: StelvinOther Reviews....
The “regular” 2020 Riesling Scharzhofberger Kabinett (bearing A.P. #3) leads with quince and peach accented by mint, cress, ginger and lemon, setting up an overall impression of coolness, but also of brightness, with stimulating cut and pungency analogous to that of the corresponding Braune Kupp. In the background is a greenhouse-like amalgam of flowers and foliage. The phenolic concentration here belies a vintage with relatively generous yields even as the efficacious acidity and levity defy preconceptions concerning a year marked by summer heat and drought. The multifaceted finish, transparent to wet stone underpinnings, is tongue-tinglingly vibrant. Here is a Riesling Kabinett to really grab and hold your attention even as it delivers consummate refreshment and a bit of thought-provoking intrigue to accompany its entertainment value. Drink 2021-2035.

David Schildknecht - VinousVery youthful, cool and pristine, this is an extremely elegant sleek and focused Kabinett. Stuart Pigott - JamesSuckling.comThe 2020er Scharzhofberger Riesling Kabinett was fermented down to barely fruity-styled levels of residual sugar. It offers a superbly refined and delicately herbal and zesty nose of white mint, vineyard peach, whipped almond cream, tangerine, orange blossom, and some fresher (green) elements. The wine starts off on the juicy and almost smooth side but progressively develops more cut as zesty and spicy elements join the party on the palate. The wine develops all the classic hallmarks of a Kabinett with energy and finesse and finesse in the finish and leaves one with a superbly focused and spicy feel in the off-dry aftertaste. This is quite a beauty! Drink 2028-2045.

Apple seed and apple wood accents lend decisive counterpoint on both nose and palate to the 2020 Riesling Scharzhof’s dominant, crunchy apple and zesty lemon fruit. Suggestions of apple blossom hover throughout. The feel is firm, and the lingering finish offers refreshment as well as stimulating cut and piquancy. (The source vineyards for this large cuvée are once again largely Saarburger Rausch, Wiltinger Braunfels and Oberemmeler Rosenberg.) Drink 2021-2029.

Stuart Pigott - JamesSuckling.comThe 2020er Riesling Scharzhof is a fully off-dry wine made from Estate holdings in the Wiltinger Braunfels, Oberemmeler Rosenberg, and Saarburger Rausch. It offers a refined and subtly aromatic nose of herbs, yellow peach, apricot blossom, pear, lavender, floral elements, cassis, and whipped cream, all wrapped into some residual scents from the spontaneous fermentation. The wine proves delicately smooth and coats the palate with suave richness of yellow fruits. This fruity-smooth side then quickly gives way to a more focused and refreshing side in the long and well-delineated finish. The aftertaste is all about spices and citrusy fruits with just a light touch of richer flavors including apricot and pineapple. The 2020 rendition of the Scharzhof has the fruity side of traditional Kabinett wines at this Estate (also as the acid feeling is slightly lower) rather than the usual off-dry balance of recent years. 2019 Egon Muller Scharzhofberger Riesling KabinettMosel, GERMANY$360. 00Bottle$4320.00 DozenABV: 9%Closure: StelvinOther Reviews....
Shimmering and pale but brilliant and slightly lime-greenish in color, the 2019 Scharzhofberger Kabinett is crystal clear and precise on the pure, fresh and coolish, highly refined and complex flinty-scented nose that is unmistakably Egon Müller's "regular" Scharzhofberger Kabinett (there is an Alte Reben bottling for the auction in September, too). Lush yet precise and enormously piquant and salty on the palate, it displays crisp white stone fruit aromas and the crystalline mineral nerviness of the iron-rich gray slate soils that eat up the residual sugar easily so that the taste is just electrifying and salty yet not really sweet. This is a frisky, mouthwateringly salty and piquant Riesling of remarkable precision, finesse and elegance, with picture-book tension for Kabinett. The finish is highly stimulating and incomparable. I dare to say that this Kabinett is my favorite this year due to its precision and coolish, precise nature. Tasted from AP 3-20 in April and June 2020.

Stuart Pigott - JamesSuckling.comThe 2019er Scharzhofberger Riesling Kabinett was fermented down to barely fruity-styled levels of residual sugar. This bright-white colored wine offers a rather subtle and, at the beginning, even shy nose driven by reduction. After a little airing, absolutely textbook flavors of white peach, white flowers, and slate emerge from the glass. These classic flavors for a Scharzhofberger carry over onto the palate, where they are joined by some zesty acidity and a gorgeous touch of whipped cream. Everything is simply in balance and this sense of completeness also drives the gorgeous finish and after-taste. This hugely impressive Kabinett is without doubt one of the finest at this Estate over the last few years!

The bright colored 2019 Riesling Scharzhof displays very fine Saar typicity on the nose. This is like a spring mountain river full of Riesling rolling over crushed slate. It is highly delicate but lush and sexy, with great precision, crystalline acidity and lingering salinity, finishing with just the right amount of residual sugar. Impressively long and tensioned on the pure and stimulating finish, this is just gorgeous and possibly the most fascinating Scharzhof I have tasted in 20 years. The times of calling this is a Best Buy are long gone, but if you ant to taste the DRC of Riesling, you should definitely try it. Tasted in April 2020.

This bright white-colored wine offers a gorgeous nose made of white peach, apricot blossom, a hint of cream, smoke, slate, and still quite some residual scents from its spontaneous fermentation. The wine proves gorgeously intense and even almost powerful on the palate at first, but then develops great finesse in the long and subtle finish. Some minty herbs join the gorgeous flavors of white peach, chalky minerals, and a hint of whipped cream in the delicately airy and off-dry tasting after-taste. This wine proves a huge success but one which will benefit from a few years of bottle aging to develop its full aromatic finesse.
