2020 Samuel Billaud Les Preuses Chablis Grand CruChablis, FRANCE$299. 00Bottle$3588.00 DozenABV: 13%Closure: CorkWhile the origins of this domaine date back to Charles-Louis-Noel Billaud in 1815, it's the current generation winemaker Samuel Billaud that has made waves with the exceptional quality of his wines produced since the creation of this project in 2009. Following the sale of the family business Domaine Billaud-Simon to Faiveley in 2014, Samuel received further prized parcels of land and now makes wines from five of the grand cru vineyards, and five of the top premier cru vineyards. The wines are vinified in a mixture of stainless steel and large old wood barrels, the latter mainly for the premier and grand cru wines.
Other Reviews....
Moderate wood influence surrounds the ripe yet exceptionally fresh aromas of citrus confit, white orchard fruit, iodine and sea breeze. While there is fine intensity, there isn't quite the same concentration to the medium-weight flavors that also possess a refined texture, all wrapped in a lingering finish that isn't quite as structured or complex. This is definitely appealing but doesn't appear to quite have the same upside potential. Drink through 2028+.

Here the wood treatment is less subtle though neither does it dominate the layered aromas that also display a vague hint of exotic fruit on the overtly floral and oyster shell scents. There is excellent density to the powerful, even imposing, mineral-driven flavors that culminate in a clean, moderately dry and very firm finale where the wood again resurfaces. Patience strongly suggested. Drink through 2032+.

Allen Meadows - BurghoundThe 2020 Chablis Grand Cru Les Clos is a deep, seamless wine of considerable potential. Exhibiting aromas of freshly baked bread, citrus zest, orange oil, nutmeg and pear, it's full-bodied, rich and layered, with terrific concentration, racy acids and a long, saline finish. There is even better Chablis character to the more elegant and cooler array of green apple, acacia blossom, oyster shell and quinine-infused aromas. I very much like the mouthfeel of the refined and intense middleweight flavors that brim with both minerality and dry extract, both of which are present on the impressively complex and strikingly long finale. This is extremely stylish with the innate finesse of a reference standard Blanchot. Drink through 2030+.

A ripe yet still reasonably typical nose reflects notes of lemon confit, white flowers, oyster shell and seashore nuances. The sleek, intense and delineated flavors possess good vibrancy on the notably more refined if not quite as powerful finish. I like this balanced effort plus it should age effortlessly. Drink 2027+.

Allen Meadows - BurghoundThe 2020 Chablis Vaillons Vieilles Vignes 1er Cru comes from 70-year-old vines and is aged entirely in tank. It has a crushed rock and Granny Smith apple nose, nicely focused and vibrant. The palate is fresh and taut with a fine bead of acidity, and lively and tensile toward the finish, which shows real sparkle even at this early stage. There is something a little understated about this elegant Vaillons. Drink 2025-2042.

Neal Martin - VinousSamuel reports that he lost more crop to grilling here than on the right bank. 60 year old vines from the heart of Vaillons. I love this nose, which requires teasing out, it is a little more svelte and even floral than in past history, but fine, precise and balanced. “Ca plonge sur la caillasse” – this dives deep into the stones. And goodness me, doesn’t it. Quite an astounding finish here. I cannot see how you could do this any better.

Billaud noted that this will also have about 20% wood in the final blend. A restrained, elegant and pure nose displays notes of various floral influences, citrus and mineral reduction. The refined but almost painfully intense medium-bodied flavors exhibit a lovely sense of minerality that adds a sense of lift to the impressively long and well-balanced finale. Lovely. Drink 2027+.

William Kelley - Wine Advocate (July 2020)The 2018 Chablis Séchet Vieilles Vignes 1er Cru comes from 0.60ha of 80-year-old vines and spends 18 months on the fine lees. It bides its time in the glass. Discreet at first, it gradually unfurls to reveal quite intense marine aromas of shucked oyster shells and sea cave. This is very well defined but it clearly benefits from decanting. The palate is lively on the entry, presenting a lovely lick of salinity right from the start. Fine energy here, and great focus, with just a touch of spice coming through on the finish and aftertaste. A very fine Séchet from M. Billaud. Recommended.

As is usually the case with this wine, there is a trace of exoticism sitting atop the subtly oaked aromas of petrol, white and yellow orchard fruit, mineral reduction and soft iodine nuances. There is fine volume and energy to the middle weight flavors that possess reasonably good mid-palate density thanks to the sappy dry extract that coats the palate on the intensely saline, dry and focused finale. This is sufficiently forward that it could be enjoyed on the younger side but this is a wine that should have no trouble rewarding up to a decade of keeping.

There is excellent vibrancy to the sleek and well-detailed flavors that conclude in a markedly dry, clean and focused finish that is presently quite tightly wound. William Kelley - Wine Advocate (July 2020)The 2018 Chablis Vaillons 1er Cru has a pale silvery hue. 375ml here. Gary Sweet here reporting for duty. A lot of moscato is kind of awful, but the good ones are delightful. Happy to say this falls into the latter category.
Peach iced tea, mint, a slightly savoury almond and nutty edge, some rosewater perfume. It’s sweet but finds balance with a tight cut of acidity, tingly bubbles, and heaven forbid, it also has a gently phenolic grip to it, and again that almost marzipan richness on a finish of good length, with a peach fuzz and white grape freshness to close. Benchmark stuff. Proper moscato. A sugar rush, yes, but so balanced and good to drink. YUM. Drink 2026-2027.

JamesSuckling.com“Aww, nectar”, quips GW. We’re drinking this in the sun with our shirts off in our y-fronts and foil reflectors under our chins with cucumber rounds on our eyes. How moscato should be drunk.
It’s brilliant drinking, peachy iced tea, a little loose, wild honey character, some preserved lemon, a lick of chalky minerality too in a light pucker somewhere in there. Refreshing, clean, quite concentrated and with very light frizz of tickly bubbles barely there. A vibrant, expressive and true-to-style rendition. “Needs some ice”, GW says as he rolls over to sun his bum. Perfect. Drink 2023-2025.

2019 Schiopetto Collio FriulanoFriuli, ITALY$64. 99Bottle$779.88 DozenABV: 13%Closure: CorkMario Schiopetto was the man considered responsible for bringing fame to Friuli’s white wines. He pioneered wine preservation techniques in the wine making process, something lacking in the region in the 1970’s - cold and anti-oxidative handling, epitomised by the German handling of Riesling - along with the more 'French' technique of elevating their wines in a careful, more oxidative, texture-building manner.

The 2019 Friulano wafts up flowery perfumes mixed with notes of tropical citrus, hints of kiwi and musky apricot. Incredible aromas of cloves, nutmeg, peaches, pears and cooked apples. Yet, always so refined and perfumed. Full-bodied, dense and very tight and focused. A fabulous bottle here. Drink or hold.
