Matured for 24 months in new fine grained French oak barrels. Impenetrable inky black heart with an equally deep black dark red hue. Intense black cherry, liquorice and blackberry aromas are pitted against toasty oak, scorched earth, dried meat and blackpepper notes.
Exceptionally concentrated, rich and dense the palate is saturated with lavish black cherry, liquorice and blackberry fruits with vanillin oak, scorched earth and blackpepper elements lining the back half. Opulent yet robust mouthfeel with a sturdy tannin structure. Outstanding power with a long decadently fruited yet muscular conclusion.

The stunning Le Macchiole 2019 Messorio is all Merlot from a special 2.5-hectare plot with a classic mix of Bolgheri soils featuring clay, silt, sandstone and limestone. The wine ferments in concrete and finishes in new barrique for 18 months. I spoke with proprietor Cinzia Merli about Merlot, and she concedes that this early-ripening grape suffers the most because of climate change. However, the winemaking team works extra hard for balance and elegance notwithstanding. This beautiful wine releases perfumes of cherry, blue flower, iris root, crushed stone and slate. Well-balanced oak tones add power and texture to the full-bodied close. 11,000 bottles were released. Drink 2025 - 2048.

The 2019 Messorio marries the natural opulence of Merlot on the Tuscan Coast with a feeling of finesse I don’t think I have ever seen here before. There is plenty of depth and resonance, but none of the heaviness that was so in vogue for many years. Dark cherry, plum, spice, mocha and lifted floral notes build into the racy, exotic finish. Drink 2027-2039.

The plums and hazelnuts come out clearly on the nose with some tar and black coffee undertones. It's full-bodied with ripe berry and cappuccino flavors. Chewy yet fine tannins. Merlot. Try after 2028.

2019 Le Macchiole Paleo Rosso Magnum (1500ml)
    Tuscany, ITALY
    $699. 00
    Bottle
    $8388.00 Dozen
    ABV: 14%
    Closure: Cork

Founded in 1983 by Eugenio Campolmi and Cinzia Merli, Le Macchiole is a pioneering estate located in the Bolgheri region of the Tuscan coast. Following Campolmi’s passing in 2002, Merli has managed the winery alongside her sons, Elia and Mattia. The estate operates approximately 22 hectares of organically farmed vineyards. While Bolgheri is historically celebrated for multi-varietal Bordeaux-style blends, Le Macchiole distinguished itself by shifting its focus toward high-density plantings and premium, single-varietal expressions of Merlot, Syrah, and Cabernet Franc to highlight specific parcel characteristics.

First released in 1989 as a classic Bordeaux blend, Paleo Rosso transitioned into a monovarietal Cabernet Franc starting with the 2001 vintage. It is widely recognized as one of Italy's benchmark single-varietal bottlings of the grape. Fruit is sourced from established estate plots, primarily the Casa Nuova, Vignone, and Madonnina vineyards.

The Le Macchiole 2019 Paleo reveals an extremely precise and etched personality that is perfectly suited to this classic vintage. If you love Cabernet Franc, this is your wine. The bouquet is linear and tight with wet gravel, lead pencil and graphite that make an elegant frame around blackberry and black plum. You taste every last miniature detail in this complex and powerful expression. Fruit comes from a 5.5-hectare plot that rises from 37 to 70 meters above sea level. The soils are a mix of clay, sand, silt, stone and limestone that is characteristic of this stretch of Tuscan coastline. The wine is fermented in cement and aged in barrique for 20 months. On second nose, Paleo begins to offer cardamom pod, exotic spice and fragrant rose water. With 25,400 bottles made, you need to give this glorious wine time to age. Drink 2025 - 2050.

The 2019 Paleo, 100% Cabernet Franc, is a total stunner. Deep, plush and explosive, the 2019 possesses fabulous density and yet it is not at all heavy. All the elements are so well-balanced. Dark cherry, plum, chocolate, mocha, espresso and grilled herbs all meld together in the glass. The purity and persistence of the flavors is absolutely compelling. The 2019 is seriously impressive. I loved it. Drink 2029-2044.

Dense midnight black core with a deep dark red black tinged hue. Nosing offers up lifted aromatics of dark plum, black cherry and liquorice with some vanillin cedar, smoked meat and peppered clove notes also evident. Mid weighted generous dark plum, black cherry and liquorice fruits carry plenty of flesh across the palate. Scorched earth, clove and peppered meat elements lie underneath. Nicely integrated fine grained tannins concluding ripe and savoury.

Fruit from Kaurna Country, off a Blewitt Springs site, and as with its grenache sibling, this is aged in used French oak (barriques and hogsheads); however, this spends 16 months in barrel. An outrageously vibrant dark purple/red hue, so enticing; while there’s a whiff of (diesel-like) reduction, the palate is awash with blueberries, dark plums, loads of spices and umami accents of soy sauce. Full-bodied, rich and ripe with bolshie tannins leaving a firm finish, fresh and a little drying, in a good way. Drink by 2033.

2021 Cesar Marquez Perez El Val Godello
    Bierzo, SPAIN
    $250. 00
    Bottle
    $3000.00 Dozen
    ABV: 12.5%
    Closure: Cork

Cesar Marquez has Bierzo running through his veins, and is the latest generation of the Perez family to own the leading Castro Ventosa winery in north-western Spain. Growing up surrounded by the region's leading exponents, including a lengthy apprenticeship with one of the world's greatest winemakers, his uncle Raul Perez, has shaped much of what Cesar values in wine. While he still manages the family estate, Cezar started his own venture in 2015, and is already one of the most exciting young prospects in Spain.

Having a deep understanding and access to some of the best vineyards Bierzo has to offer, Cezar focuses on preserving purity and freshness, highlighting the promise Mencia has in the right place when made with attention to detail. Cezar is structuring his line-up of wines in Burgundian fashion, making a broader appellation wine, a village wine, along with several single vineyard offerings. Winemaking is similar on all wines, with grapes partially destemmed and fermented in open barriques, before spending 12 months in old barrels without any racking or top ups before bottling the following winter. These are wines that are not just great examples of Bierzo Mencia, but wines that truly stand shoulder to shoulder with the finest from any region or country.

El Val is a new wine of 100% Godello from a cool, high altitude vineyard, and transcends the quality limits expected of this grape in Bierzo.

    Other Reviews....
The new white 2021 El Val comes from one of the coolest places in Valtuille—the same place as a new white for the family firm Castro Ventosa—with vines regrafted to old-clone Godello. It has 12.48% alcohol, very good parameters for acidity and freshness and a consistent sensation on the palate. It's from ancient vines on clay, stone and quartzite soils and fermented in one 500-liter barrel where the wine matured with the lees that were never stirred for 11 months. It's super elegant, very clean, precise, symmetric and delineated, transparent, harmonious and elegant, like a grand cru Burgundy. Bravo! The price is high, reflecting scarcity but also quality. It transcends the appellation and the variety. Only 521 bottles were produced. It was bottled in August 2022. Drink 2023-2032.

1998 Ardbeg Single Cask No.1275 Cask Strength Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)
    Islay, SCOTLAND
    $1999. 00
    Bottle
    $23988.00 Dozen
    ABV: 55.4%

Note: Product has come from a private collection and as such has some minor scuffing/scratches/handling marks. Actual product pictured. This one, in particular, has some impact crumpling to the front, bottom edge. See picture.

A single cask selection from a from first fill bourbon barrel, cask #1275 was limited to just 252 bottles. 55.4% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered. Collectable.

Other reviews... Colour: white wine. Nose: punchy, starting in an unusual way, on hints of green olive and even capers on top of a peatiness that isn’t huge but certainly bigger than the SMWS’. The rest is rather classic young Ardbeg, without any big bourbonny notes. Seawater, peat smoke, kippers and freshly cut apples. With water: more of the same, with an emphasis on the coastal notes and a little mint kicking in. Mouth (neat): powerful and very, very ‘Ardbeg’. Ashes, liquorice, smoked salmon, pepper, ‘raw’ peat, tar, green apples and a little salt. Not really complex but impressively punchy if you like them young. With water: clean, classic young Ardbeg, on apples, peat, pepper, marzipan, gentian and seashells. Finish: quite long, with quite some saltiness and notes of walnut skin as well as a little eucalyptus and lemon balm. Faint earthiness. Note that the finish is more pleasant when undiluted. Comments: very ‘young Ardbeg’, that is to say quite simple but very satisfying. I guess a good way of coming up with more complexity would be to marry various kinds of casks, including sherry. Hey, you could even call that Rollercoaster.  85 points - whiskyfun.com

    36 Short Single Malt Australian Whisky (500ml) - 40%
    South Australia, AUSTRALIA
    $99. 99
    Bottle
    $1199.88 Dozen
    ABV: 40%

36 Short's latest single malt is created in the same way as their 45% ABV expression, minus the red wine cask finishing: Australian malted barley, water from an aquifer underneath the distillery and maturation in locally sourced, shaved and charred American oak barrels is followed by further resting in x Bourbon barrels to add complexity and fruity notes. The result is a modern yet balanced whisky with a well-rounded, light-weight feel bottled at an accessible 40% Alc./Vol.

Notes from the producers... Colour: Deep gold autumn barley. Nose: Sweet and fruity on the nose, with tart lime marmalade notes. A faint aroma of fresh cut pine and tropical fruit adds a delicate malt finish. Taste: A warm roundness encompassing the whisky with character of a tangy dried fruit medley. A hint of vanilla bean, taking you on a long, sweet fruity journey. Finish: A beautiful long finish with a taste of dried mixed fruit. Lingering with notes of apricot and peaches with a warming finish.

The Cotes du Rhone Blanc consists of 50% Grenache Blanc, 35% Viognier, and 15% Clairette, sourced from 40-50 year-old low yielding vines. Hand-picked fruit is carefully sorted, then gently pressed as whole bunches and left to settle overnight at 10°C. Afterward, they undergo cool fermentation in stainless steel tanks and age on fine lees for four months.

Hellyers Road Distillery Double Cask Single Malt Australian Whisky (700ml)
    Tasmania, AUSTRALIA
    $129. 99
    Bottle
    $1559.88 Dozen
    ABV: 46.2%

As the name suggests, 'Double Cask' spent five years maturing in American oak followed by a finishing period in French oak. Deeply scented, the nose offers rich vanillan oak, Ovaltine and hints of pickled ginger. The slightly grassy, bittersweet, warm-alcohol style of early Hellyer's bottlings is salient on the palate where a hint of sulphur and something almost metallic mingles with hot spices, the malt and sweet oak rebounding in a bittersweet finish. Tasted from a 50ml sample. 46.2% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

Other reviews... As the new iteration of Hellyers Road's pinot noir cask whisky, Double Cask has a big job on its hands. But at under $120 for a 700ml bottle at 46%, they're already off to a flying start in terms of value. There's significantly more oak influence here, with the combination of French and American timbers shining through on the rich, dark, well-developed nose. Think green walnuts, cassia, autumn leaf litter and antique furniture. The palate is also dry and woody but with a great integration of spirit that carries through nicely and at great length. If you like oaky tannin and not a lot of sweetness but appreciate textural whisky, this is a solid drink for a super reasonable price. 88 points - James Halliday's Australian Wine Companion

Notes from the producers... Expect vibrant notes of raisin toast, stewed fruits and candied orange with a hint of clove.

Kilchoman Pedro Ximenez Sherry Cask Matured 2023 Edition Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)
    Islay, SCOTLAND
    $199. 99
    Bottle
    $2399.88 Dozen
    ABV: 50%

Like many others, we've been long-time fans of Kilchoman. Some go as far to say that no better quality peated malt is currently produced in Scotland. A small scale, hands-on approach and attention to detail make each release at least as good as the last. The 2023 PX Sherry edition is the first Kilchoman to be aged full-term in PX casks. You might consider five years old to be too young, but PX hogsheads can be aggressive; a shorter spell is often the best option to ensure a balanced result. Here, the citrus sweetness and peat smoke are beautifully married with the fruit'n'nut chocolate character of the sherry. Never too sweet, by the finish it's definitively Kilchoman; Vivacious and fresh, with a signature rush of maritime peat and tingling pepper fading into cocoa and wood smoke. Distillery character wins the day. Tasted from a 30ml sample. 50% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered. 23,000 bottles produced.

Other reviews... An exquisite combination of sherry fruit and peat smoke, with aromas of sultana, allspice, aniseed, nutmeg, cigar wrapper, Brazil nut, and licorice. The indulgent notes continue uninterrupted on the palate, with muscovado sugar, chocolate brownie, malt, and zested orange, winding down with rich dark chocolate and dried vine fruits into a soothing finish of raisin, peat smoke, and chocolate. (1,980 bottles for the U.S.) 92 points - whiskyadvocate.com

Notes from the producers... Nose: Sweet sultanas and raisins with rounded peat smoke and layers of liquorice and hints of citrus sweetness. Palate: Brown sugar and malty sweetness then orange peel, citrus, dark chocolate and waves of sherry sweetness. Finish: Chocolate coated raisins, oak smoke, mixed spices and lasting PX sweetness.

Very fine cocoa-powder tannins shape the delicate, plump, and cushioned fruit in the mouth. This is elegant and poised, with good length of flavour that shoots out across the finish line and provides additional time for reminiscing the flavours. Smart. Drink 2021 – 2031.

The 2020 Fiano di Avellino Riserva Tognano combines richness with verve, wafting up with a sweetly smoky blend of crushed rocks and dried apricot. This is textural with a pleasant inner sweetness up front, as a cascade of lime-tinged orchard fruits flows throughout. The 2020 finishes youthfully tense and savory, with a salty sensation that contrasts nectarine tones. This is a total pleasure to taste today, yet it has the balance to mature beautifully over the next five to eight years. Drink 2023-2028.

The founder, the highly inventive, industrious and resourceful Frank Potts (1815 - 1890), to whom this wine is dedicated, was a 19th century genius, and a pioneer who has been described as being “made of the right stuff and well worthy of the grand old land that gave him birth.” He arrived in Australia as a 21 year old, having set sail from Plymouth England, and landing late in 1836. By the 1860’s, he had planted the original 30 acres of vineyard on the banks of the Bremmer Creek. Potts was highly admired - “One meets with extraordinary characters through life, but I doubt whether his equal could be found. In appearance a stranger would take him to be a poor labourer, with a thin, spare figure and long unkempt hair and invariably wearing his shirt sleeves tucked up. Although a most uncouth-looking person, and yet this man is a perfect genius! There is not a single thing mechanical or otherwise undertaken by him which he does not succeed in...” So remarked Inspector Tolmer, who was later to become Commissioner of Police, South Australia. Frank was one of the first to recognise the benefits of red gum. After building several houses for himself, he made tools and a bullock dray to cut down and haul these massive timbers in order to construct a gigantic twin wine press and several enormous wine vats. He also created the irrigation system that's still in place today. What little spare time he might have had was spent building a piano and various race winning yachts!

A triple Trophy winning Cabernet blend that combines rich red to dark fruits with wonderful finesse and polish.

A blend of 68% Cabernet Sauvignon, 17% Malbec, 8% Petit Verdot, 6% Merlot and 1% Cabernet Franc with maturation taking place in French oak puncheons and hogsheads (25% new) for a period of 12 months. Dense midnight black colour with a deep dark red hue. Sailing out of the glass are delightful red to black currant and red plum scents laced with violets and bay leaf. Also evident are dusty cedar, faint black olive and spicy tobacco notes. Showing wonderful finesse are rich red to dark currant, red plum and mulberry fruits which caress the mid weighted palate with a supple feel. Tobacco, dusty earth and infusions of bay leaf lurk underneath. Polished, seamlessly integrated tannins with a long, refined conclusion. Winner of 3 trophies.

A 'different cut' that's sure to delight fans of this distillery.

Glenfarclas are known for allocating some odd age statements to their European customers. This one was bottled at a healthy ABV and is fully matured in oloroso sherry casks (likely second or third fill). From the creamy vanilla-malt nose that develops toasted grains and baked bread aromas to the unusually oily delivery, this is a gorgeous cut offering something different from the core range. Soft, rounded flavours of sponge cake, milk chocolate, cafe cremes and even a vague waxiness make for a more feminine style with oloroso merely suggested at the finish. Complexity isn't high but the texture is quite special - the kind of luxe feel you'd expect from much, much older whisky. An anomaly, particularly considering the modest asking price. 44.1% Alc./Vol.

Kitajima Brewery was established in 1805 in Shiga Prefecture near lake Biwa. As one of the oldest and most respected sake breweries in Japan, Kitajima produce a range of full flavoured and fruitier styles. Miyosakae is their traditional core range, while in 2002 they developed the Kitajima range for more innovative releases using the kimoto natural starter method. The Whale of Biwa Lake sake is unfiltered (muroka), unpasteurised (nama), and undiluted (genshu).

Tasting note: Crystalline, shimmering pale lemon colour in the glass. Initial aromas show sugar snap peas, a hint of lime zest, green melon, though it's quite restrained. After time an earthy mushroom and rice bran element emerges. Tasting chilled it's all very restrained, though as it warms the wheat and grain elements develop, supported by the pithy green fruit notes. Once at room temperature the robust nature of this genshu (undiluted) sake is more apparent, and the depth of savoury notes work well with the lean fruit profile. This should pair with a range of foods, able to match with many fatty fish dishes, and even hold up to flavourful Asian marinades and sauces. Grilled eel would be a perfect choice. Served chilled or at room temperature.

Caledonia Australis is dedicated to making small batches of handcrafted Pinot Noir and Chardonnay in a sustainable manner. The vineyards, located in some of the coldest and wettest areas of mainland Australia, use mature plants closely spaced in nutrient-rich soil. The winemaking process focuses on preserving the richness and complexity derived from the demanding cultivation conditions. The Pinot Noir is usually processed with a 20 to 40-day skin contact, and natural fermentations occur without added substances. Before fermentation, there's a gentle soaking phase with hand plunging. The wines are aged for a long time (18-20 months) in French oak barrels (15% new, 15% second use, 70% older), followed by an extra three months of bottle aging before release.
