    2024 Greywacke Sauvignon Blanc
    Marlborough, NEW ZEALAND
    $26. 99
    Bottle
    $323.88 Dozen
    Cellar: Drink now - 2 Years (2025-2027)

Greywacke is the Marlborough label of former Cloudy Bay winemaker Kevin Judd, where he presided over that company’s first 25 vintages establishing the reputation that it has today. The name Greywacke was adopted by Kevin and his wife Kimberley for their first Marlborough vineyard in Rapaura, named in recognition of the high prevalence of rounded greywacke river stones in the soils of the vineyard. Kevin registered the name back in 1992 with the vague notion that he might one day want to use it on a wine label of his own.
Fruit was sourced from various prime vineyard sites in Marlborough’s Southern Valleys and the central Wairau Plains with a portion of the juice fermented in old oak barrels.

Brilliant water like core with greenish tinged edges. Pungent nose with aromas of passionfruit, herbaceous gooseberry and lime leaping out of the glass. Subtle green apple, stony mineral and grassy notes ensue. Scrumptious passionfruit, lime and green apple fruits burst across the palate with terrific intensity. Complimenting delicate herbaceous gooseberry, subtle grassy and flinty mineral elements also chime in. Displaying outstanding power and textural volume it has crisp acidity and a long, zesty finish.
Drink over the next 1-2 years.

A stroll through an island rainforest is the best way to describe this wine. A canopy of elderflower blooms, green apple, and mangosteen flesh opens the experience, while the variety’s flourishing, leafy qualities sit at its heart in the most enticing way. Notes of cut lime, papaya skin and aloe gel weave through. The palate builds with each sip – a touch of self-raising flour mealiness, a hint of lemon-butter creaminess, all carried in an overall dry style that both quenches and intrigues. Its natural arch of acidity drives the wine forward, underpinned by a low hum of power and a full force of flavour. Best enjoyed in a wide glass, to capture its full effect. Drink by 2029.

Shanteh Wale - James Halliday's Australian Wine Companion

The 2024 Sauvignon Blanc was hand delivered to me in Fremantle by winemaker Richelle Tyney from Greywacke, all the way from Marlborough, New Zealand—roughly 5,200 kilometers between us. The wine leads with passion fruit and white pineapple, green apple, beeswax and brine. The wine is salty, fine and sedate—the characters are all in balance with each other. I love this wine from this small producer. It is intense and concentrated, shaped by savory phenolics and loaded with crunchy New Zealand acidity. This speaks of the place in a clear, unfettered voice, and it's brilliant for that. 13.5% alcohol, sealed under screw cap. Drink 2025-2030.

Domaine de Joy VSOP 5 Year Old Bas Armagnac (500ml)
    Armagnac, FRANCE
    $88. 99
    Bottle
    $1067.88 Dozen
    ABV: 40.5%

The brainchild of Swiss couple, Paul and Marguerite Gessler, Domaine de Joy is a luxury French brand specializing in high-quality drinks. The company is particularly well-known for its exceptional range of flavoured liqueurs, however, they also bottle spirits, including Cognac, Armagnac and Calvados. Distilled from Bacco and Ugni blanc, matured in Limousin oak, then finished in older Gascon casks for maximum fruit-oak balance, at just five years old, Joy's VSOP is described as "already well poised". 40.5% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... Deep amber in the glass, the sweet aromas suggest honey, maple, vanilla and oak. The remarkably light, silky palate shows oak, vanilla and a hint of cocoa powder. Most of the flavor is on the mouthwatering, exceedingly long finish, echoing with baking spice and vanilla. 93 points - wineenthusiast.com

2008 Darroze Domaine de Cantau Cask Strength Bas Armagnac (700ml)
    Armagnac, FRANCE
    $230. 00
    Bottle
    $2760.00 Dozen
    ABV: 50%

Located in the golden triangle of Bas Armagnac, the commune of Mauléon d'Armagnac has been producing great eaux de vie for decades. At Domaine de Cantau, the classic sandy soils are accompanied by clay, a terroir known as 'boulbènes'. Folle blanche and Baco find their best conditions here. Guy Beyris has farmed his property for decades, always favoring the former, Armagnac's historic grape variety. His 2008 vintage was distilled in Philippe Gironi stills and aged in 400-liter Bartholomo cooperage barrels. Like others in the Unique Collection, no blending of domains or vintages takes place. There's also no dilution before bottling to tame the aromatic strength or the nuances of the terroir. It's Armagnac made for purists. 50% Alc./Vol.

Notes from the bottlers... the tannins are fine. Notes of vanilla and rancio accompany candied fruit, creme caramel and elderflower. Superb!

Darroze Biologic 4 Year Old Bas Armagnac (700ml)
    Armagnac, FRANCE
    $119. 99
    Bottle
    $1439.88 Dozen
    ABV: 47.5%

Distilled from organically grown Folle Blanche grapes, at just four years old, you might anticipate this to be a little 'rustic' (having said that, unaged eaux de vie from this appellation can be fantastic). Cognacexpert.com were struck by its "remarkable finesse" - the tannins are yet to assert themselves, instead, fruity aromas of prune and apricot are balanced with notes of honey and almond. The simplicity of the presentation reflects its organic origins. Try it neat or over ice or use it as a base for innovative organic cocktails. 47.5% Alc./Vol.

Notes from the producers... Light yellow colour. A fruity, spicy nose (candied orange peel, dried apricot, prune, mango, vanilla) which also reveals notes of brioche, honey and almonds. Elegant both on the nose and on the palate (where those same fruity flavours emerge) thanks to its silky tannins. Rounded on the palate, despite its youth, and very long.

Hudelot-Noëllat is no longer one of Burgundy’s hidden gems as word is well and truly out now on just how exceptional these wines are. Charles Van Canneyt runs this iconic family owned domaine based in Vougeot where he crafts elegant and classic wines from some of the region’s most prized vineyards. Staying true to tradition, Charles practices minimal intervention in the cellar along with limited new oak usage. His aim is to produce refined Burgundy with an emphasis on purity and finesse, all while letting the terroir shine.

    Other Reviews....
The Beaux Monts from Hudelot-Noëllat is another level of richness and depth in 2022, with a pronounced mulberry and fig fruit aroma touched with earth, smoke and spice. The wine is dense and tannic, impressively muscular for this appellation. One can only imagine the secret is the old vines and judicious punching down; Van Canneyt farms 0.3 hectares at the top of the slope; otherwise, it is a cool terroir. The grapes were partially destemmed and firmly punched down before ageing in cask (25% new). Drink 2030-2065.

A more deeply pitched and spicier, if perhaps slightly less elegant, nose is comprised by notes of exotic tea, sandalwood and an interesting hint of star anise. Here too the medium-bodied flavors possess a really lovely and sophisticated texture yet no lack of power on the intensely mineral-driven, dusty and youthfully austere finale. Excellent quality in an equally age-worthy package. Drink through 2034+.

Aromas of plums, red berries, orange zest, exotic spices and potpourri preface the 2022 Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Beaumonts, a medium to full-bodied, deep and layered wine with a concentrated core of fruit that's framed by sweet, powdery tannins. It's pure and complete.

The 2022 Vosne-Romanée Les Beaumonts 1er Cru has red and black fruit, plus a touch of shucked oyster shell and Japanese nori. Impressive delineation and focus. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, a pretty and relatively delicate Les Beaumonts. It is sapid and quite linear, maybe needing a little more grip on the finish. Give it 3-4 years once in bottle. Again, I think this will gain weight during its élevage. Drink 2027-2048.

This too is cool, airy and spicy with its essence of red currant, cherry and crushed fennel aromas. The notably finer texture of the middleweight flavors is immediately evident as there is a lilting but punchy mouthfeel, all wrapped in a dusty, silky and refined yet firm, serious and youthfully austere finish. The 2022 Vougeot Les Petits Vougeot 1er Cru has quite a potent oyster shell scent on the nose, almost overriding the dark berry fruit. Lavish aromas of blackberry and plum fruit with an edge of earthy complexity make the initial attack compelling. The texture is firm and elegant, with grippy tannins but no astringency and enough extract and freshness to ensure an interminable finish. The grapes are from a half-hectare of century-old vines that run the length of the vineyard just north of the Domaine de la Romanée-Conti vines. They are partially destemmed and gently fermented before ageing in cask (half new). Ideally, one would wait a decade before opening this wine, but there is enough substance here to age 50 years beyond that. Drink 2030-2075.

A highly restrained and decidedly cool nose requires aggressive swirling to coax the wonderfully spicy red pinot fruit, floral and exotic tea scents from the glass. On the palate the super-refined, energetic and well-detailed middleweight flavors possess a lilting, pure and highly refined mouthfeel thanks primarily to the beautifully fine-grained tannins supporting the striking long, balanced and lightly austere finale. This is very classy juice. Drink through 2034+.

The 2022 Romanée-Saint-Vivant Grand Cru unfurls in the glass with scents of cherries, wild berries, rose petals and exotic spices. Full-bodied, fleshy and perfumed, its velvety attack segues into a fleshy, layered, almost unctuous core of lively fruit that's framed by sweet, powdery tannins, concluding with a long, resonant finish.

The 2022 Romanée-Saint-Vivant Grand Cru is vivacious and well-defined on the nose. A mixture of red and black fruit swirls with crushed violet, and blueberry aromas emerge with time. The palate is medium-bodied with those graphite elements that tincture that black fruit, fleshy and rounded. A crescendo towards the finish delivers the sapidity that entices you back for more. This oozes class, even if I don't think it is the ultimate wine Van Canneyt has overseen. Tasted at the Stannary Wines dinner in London with Charles van Canneyt. Drink 2029-2055.

An initially crisp spirit develops a broad, expansive mouthfeel with a tropical fruit edge, mouth filling and chewy through the finish. The outturn equates to 840 bottles - all from first-fill sherry butts. 54.6% Alc./Vol. Non chill-filtered. Tasted from a 30ml sample.

    $1979.88 Dozen
    ABV: 46%

Sporting a new presentation, the 15 year old continues to be matured in Pedro Ximénez and Oloroso sherry casks from Andalucía. Master Blender, Rachel Barrie sums up the profile as "Honey-glazed apricot and ripe fig with a crescendo of black cherry, angelica, and muscovado." 46% Alc./Vol. States natural colour and presumably this is chill filtered.

Other reviews... [2020 bottling] I had thought it had lost a large part of its original oomph when I last tried the 15, back in 2018 (WF 81). That was already a version to which they had added PX. Seems that our friend Ralfy had noticed that it is now not 'non chill-filtered' anymore, not too sure why a bottler would take that away while still bottling at 46% col. But sometimes whisky is like wurst or the law, you wouldn't want to know how they make it. Colour: gold. Nose: same path as that of the 10, only a little hotter and with more raisins I would say. Same cherry stems, nuts, grist, burnt cake, a little metal polish… The first Revivals had been stunning more than ten years ago, but rumour had it that they had added much older whiskies to the vattings. As B.B. King would have said, the thrill is gone now. Mouth: still a pleasant whisky and I think I actually like it better than last time. I'm particularly fond of these mentholy and liquoricy notes, the sour oranges, this earthiness, and certainly the orange blossom (our pals the panettones, I love panettone and my birthday is… joking). Roasted nuts. Frankly, I find this pretty good, if not as thick and wide as the early batches. Finish: rather long, with a retro style. Earth and soot on top of sherry and all that. Roasted nuts in the aftertaste. Comments: Glendronach, you had me worried for a minute… 86 points - whiskyfun.com

    $1499.88 Dozen

One in a new series called the Atelier Range (aka “L’Atelier des Rhums”), a trio of products designed by Master Blender Karine Lassalle “to identify three characteristics inherently present and specific to the terroir of Rhum J.M, and cleverly highlight them through cask manipulation.” All the rums in the range are quite young, being under three years old. Fumee Volcanique means "Volcanic Smoke". Essentially, it's agricole aged for 12 to 14 months in bourbon barrels that undergo an “extreme” char treatment. The producers sum it up as "intense and powerful, with notes of salted butter caramel, lime and honey enhanced with smoke." Rhum for fans of Islay single malts, perhaps? 49% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... Extremely fruity on the nose, this has the immediate impact of a classic agricole, overwhelming with notes of overripe pineapple and charred lemon, tempered by a strong vein of cut grass and a touch of licorice. This hasn’t had enough time in barrel to become as smoky as the distillery might want, given the name, but there’s a taste of char that emerges on the palate, melding with the toasty caramel, almond, and coconut elements on the tongue. A tough of racy tajin adds some bite on the finish. The overall effect is a little haphazard, as the heavy fruit character weighs down everything else. Definitely something the tiki crowd can mix with, though. - drinkhacker.com

...Fumée volcanique, volcanic smoke, that will obviously appeal to any malt whisky lover – not to mention peatheads. Smoke, where? Hold on, as I understand it, this has nothing to do with smoke per se, it's just that the casks have been heavily charred. Which, as whisky folks know well, would not impart any form of smokiness to a spirit. But let's see… Colour: straw. Nose: young and fresh, with touches of rubber and aniseed, then indeed a wee smokiness, as if the casks had met some peaters in an earlier life. Some kind of STRised ex-Islay wood, perhaps? Ow the distillate feels very young and it's true that the heavily charred wood did not add to much vanilla here, let alone coconut. So, it's pretty dry. Mouth: first and foremost it is very spicy and vegetal. You'd almost believe this is verbena liqueur blended with green chartreuse and tar liqueur (goudron). Some lime too, but really not a lot of 'rhum agricole', in my opinion. Some kind of in-cask mixology? But don't get me wrong, I rather enjoy this, it's just very unusual. Finish: medium, with rather more mint and aniseed. What we call 'a perroquet', which is pastis with a dollop of mint syrup. Some rubber is back in the aftertaste. Comments: a rather cute alien, and perhaps a category on its own. 81 points - whiskyfun.com

    Well hello.
This is a beautiful Beechworth shiraz. Composed, fresh, flavoursome and complex. It tastes of black cherries, almost into plum, with deli meat, black pepper, floral elements, woodsmoke and an array of both sweet spices and garden herb characters. There’s a clear, welcoming sweetness to the fruit, which really drains you in, but then there’s so much savoury, spicy, bunchy character inlaid. This is a beauty. Drink 2024-2032.

Made with 90% whole berries with a small portion of whole bunches. Matured in barriques (25% new). A medium, bright crimson red. An excellent set of regional Victorian pinots from Provenance in '22, this sits nicely between the Ballarat and Geelong versions. A mix of red and black fruits together with a little thyme and peony. Medium bodied, this silky-textured and well-balanced wine is ready to enjoy but, equally, will only become more complex over time. Drink by 2031.

This is both lithe and sinewy. There’s macerated fruit, there’s an earthen aspect, there’s fragrant herbs and a meaty, bloody, rusty character. It doesn’t have a lot of volume but it makes the most of itself. Tannin is emery-board-fine, and length is very good. This is one of those wines that grows on you more and more, the longer you sit with it. It’s understated but it’s complex. Drink 2025-2029+

There's a power to this wine, a force, and yet it also comes across as a wine with a keen savoury side. Win-win. Black cherry, hazelnut, black pepper and rounds of leaf matter and tobacco put on a confident and highly engaging display. Indeed, it's beautiful. Drink by 2035.

The colour is brilliant and bright with deep crimson hues. The nose offers a lovely combination of cherry and chocolatey dark plums, it’s engaging from the outset. Made with 98/2% shiraz/viognier. A compelling example of syrah, one that brings subtlety and restraint, giving full voice to the grape's aromatic side and innate beauty. Smell the lifted violet, acacia, briar, black cherry and spice. Quietly assumes a personality ripe in black cherries, bramble, cinnamon, allspice, woodsmoke and cured meats. Feel the tension playing out on the palate between tannin and acidity, tight and taut at this still-early stage, and oak (25% new) and fruit. Five years old and almost ready for its close-up. Drink by 2035.

The finest syrah in Australia, if not the New World. At least if the measuring stick is the Northern Rhone. A warm year, but with no dearth of freshness, nor aromatic fireworks. Think violets, salumi, blueberries, crushed clove, mace and Chinese five spice. The tannins, a beautiful weave from fore to aft. A little more astringent, perhaps, than the finest vintages, but this biodynamically certified expression will age beautifully across the mid-term. Best after 2025.

Brave Souls is collaboration between Sons of Eden and distributor David Fesq. The fruit for this wine was sourced from two standout vineyards within the higher altitude and cooler sections of Eden Valley, the Cranes Range vineyard and Boehm Springs Road vineyard. The 2024 vintage was a cool season with a long slow, and dry, ripening period which delivered pristine Riesling fruit with an abundance of flavour and natural acidity.

    $1559.88 Dozen
    ABV: 48.2%

Mac-Talla continues to explore diversity in Islay whisky. Through Flora, the brand pays tribute to Islay’s “botanical richness”, complementing the other expressions in the range: Terra, inspired by the earth; Mara, a seaside dram, and Strata, which nods to the rocks of Islay. 70% Sherry vs 30% Bourbon matured whiskies have been vatted together and returned to second-fill sherry butts to marry for a number of months before bottling. The floral theme anticipates a soft whisky, but the delivery is pretty full-on for its namesake. Our small sample yielded fresh, grassy, peppery flavours with the peat gathering steam. There's a paradox between its relatively light body and the weight of the phenols that draws comparisons with several Octomores - however given this is from Morrisons, the source is likely Bowmore. 48.2% Alc./Vol. Non chill-filtered.

Notes from the bottlers... COLOUR: Gorse Yellow. NOSE: Fragrant with ripe floral notes and aromatic wood spice. TASTE: Delicate notes of heather intertwined with soft peat smoke and nutty undertones.

    ABV: 48.2%

The Old Perth Double Sherry Wood joined the core lineup of Old Perth Whiskies in late 2024. Drawn from ex-Oloroso and Pedro Ximinez sherry casks, we have clean and fairly contemporary sherry at play here with some basic, fresh fruit cake character and a light nuttiness and late bitter cocoa intruding in the sweetness of the malt. 48.2% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered. Tasted from a 30ml sample.

Other reviews... Nose: To begin, lots of baking spices (cinnamon, nutmeg, and orange peel) before brown sugar, sultanas, crème caramel, then a hint of raspberry. Palate: Spanish custard slice, fragrant vanilla bean, and cinnamon sugar crêpes all make this a sweet treat on the palate. Finish: Some notes of wood spice emerge, alongside heather honey and a medium-length finish. Comment: Perfectly pleasant whisky but lacks some complexity. 7.2 points - whiskymag.com

Medium to full red-purple, still bright after five years, vibrant cherry and plum fruit aromas more than handle the oak on the bouquet; the palate is sumptuous, but not heavy, the cherry and plum flavours tracking the bouquet. The wine has a very long finish, with fine, integrated tannins. Destined to become one of the great Granges.

This dark purple-colored wine exhibits notes of sweet plum, blackberry, and cassis intermixed with some licorice, chocolate, and espresso. It is a blend of 94% Shiraz and 6% Cabernet Sauvignon that tips the scales at 14+% alcohol. The wine is layered, unctuously textured, full-bodied with tremendous intensity, moderately high tannin, and a 40-second finish. The wine needs a good 4-5 years of cellaring. Anticipated maturity: 2006-2025. This Grange should ultimately merit a higher score when it is closer to its plateau of drinkability.

Strongly marked—as always—by its 100% American oak elevage, the 2017 Grange backs up the cedar and vanilla notes with ample blackberry and cassis fruit. Full-bodied, ripe and almost decadently creamy in the mouth, it's loaded with substance, concentrated and rich, yet—in the context of Grange—relatively light and elegant-seeming on the finish. Only the seventh-ever Grange to be exclusively Shiraz, it originates from Barossa Valley (86%) and McLaren Vale (14%); Shiraz from other growing regions in South Australia failed to make the grade this year.

Barossa Valley and McLaren Vale fruit. Matured 18 months in 100% new American oak hogsheads. The inky density and impenetrable presence that proclaim Grange are irrefutable, even in the cooler 2017 season, in which sourcing has been pulled back to the strongholds of the Barossa Valley and McLaren Vale. It’s all here: black fruits of every kind, licorice, dark chocolate, coffee bean, coal dust, even a suggestion of fruit-mince spice. A wall of Grange tannins hold back its immense force, as finely engineered as ever. The finish holds motionless for minutes, with a stature and presence possessed only by Grange, yet at every moment upholding statuesque poise, integrity, even tang in this cooler season.

This starts with a deeply spicy and brooding nose that packs plenty of (100% new) American oak, some smoked vanilla and ripe dark plums and berries. The palate has a youthful, astringent feel with sinewy oak tannin and deep plum and dark-berry flavors, carrying a big frame of fruit extract. Big, round berries strive towards boldness. A blend of Barossa Valley and McLaren Vale. 100% shiraz. Drink over the next two decades.

Opaque, bright-rimmed ruby. Highly pungent, smoke- and mineral-accented aromas of cherry pit, violet candy, cured tobacco, savory herbs, coconut and exotic spices on the kaleidoscopic nose. Shows superb clarity and spicy lift to its spice-laced bitter cherry, cassis, blueberry and floral pastille flavors, which take on black cardamom, menthol and cola nuances as the wine slowly stretches out. Shows superb delineation and spicy thrust on the youthfully tannic finish, which features resonating cherry, blue fruit and floral notes. Drink 2028-2046.

Memorable, complex, aromatic and explosively deep, with a mix of palo santo, dark chocolate, black olive, espresso and hazelnut butter. It’s now 70 years since the first vintage of Penfolds Grange was made. This 2017 release was grown in the Barossa Valley and McLaren Vale regions (only), and for only the seventh time in its history it’s 100% shiraz (the other 100% shiraz vintages being 1951, 1952, 1963, 1999, 2000 and 2011). As is custom, it spent 18 months in 100% new American oak. For reviews of every Penfolds Grange ever made, click here.
Cuddly doesn’t quite conjure the command of Grange but it was the first word to spring to mind. It was only later that I realised that it’s 100% shiraz. It feels it. It’s a grand display of this most come-hither of varieties. Big fruit, big texture, big arms of tannin and soaring length. It tastes like ants squashed in a rolling wave of super-saturated plum, roasted vanilla riding the wave, soy and rust slipped within. It’s as complete an Australian shiraz as you ever will taste.

Dense red-purple; the typically rich and powerful bouquet has layers of dark berry fruit and integrated and balanced oak. What makes it unusual is the distinct hint of chocolate, which appears again on the silkily powerful palate. Here there is an array of all of the fruit flavours one could possibly expect, but once again that touch of dark Swiss chocolate adding an intriguing note. The oak balance and integration is better than any five-year-old Grange I can remember, the tannins perfectly balanced into the bargain.

A substantial 11% of the 1994 Grange is Cabernet Sauvignon, and it's most clearly apparent on the elegant, leafy, floral nose. On the palate, it's more clearly Grange and Shiraz-like, with plenty of weight and richness along with flavors of dried fruit, roasted meat and mocha, but there's also a sense that it's starting to lighten and become approachable/mature. The 2004 Tatiarra Heathcote Shiraz Collection will take you beyond any Shiraz experience you have ever had before.

Recently "GARAGISTE" (based in Seattle, U.S.A. and one of America's most reputable wine merchants) tasted the wines and were plunged into a sensory tour-de force, re-surfacing with reports so graphic, so potent, that there is little we can add. Put simply: "This is why you drink wine."

This abridged version of Garagiste's full report begins with the 2004 Tatiarra Cambrian Shiraz:

"...if you are a Clos Rougeard meets Lagrein meets Hermitage meets 1955 La Mission Haut Brion sort of person then this is for you...This is a painful experience of acid, complexity, cherry rock and masculine traits that will push aside the uninitiated back to their gentler South Australian experiments. A megalith waiting to unfold...One of the very best wines produced in 2004 anywhere in Australia...For the money the Cambrian has to be one of the most complex and complete wines made in Australia today. THE HIGHEST RECOMMENDATION."

If the stunning 2004 Cambrian Shiraz could be bettered, only one wine could do it, the 2004 Tatiarra Caravan of Dreams Shiraz Pressings:

"...the very best wine of the vintage going beyond the critically swooned over 2003 Pressings. I'm not sure how they could accomplish this...Chiseled, liquefied rock and earth meshed with just the slightest suggestion of heavy cream and a tannic structure that would take Godzilla several films to break through, the 2004 is a mighty wine of earth and fruit with an impossibly complicated, wound up and layered personality that is truly one of a kind in Australia. This is as close as it gets to an old-style Grange character (think 1962 or 1971) while remaining clean, fresh and impenetrable. If you purchase this wine it will be very disappointing if opened today - it will illicit more than a few "who cares?" remarks and evil glairs from your guests. This is all about the ageing potential - if you buy Grange (at four times the price) and you don't buy this then I'm not sure what to say. THE VERY HIGHEST RECOMMENDATION."

After surfacing for air, the tasting panel were then confronted with a wine that stretched their conceptions of the variety to new horizons, the 2004 Tatiarra Trademark Shiraz:

"It is one of the very best (if not the very best) wines of 2004...The devilish amalgam of sultry Footprint with the iron fisted Pressings has produced a "wow" of a beverage that somehow bridges the off-putting nature of the regular Tatiarra wines and softens it with the 2004 McLaren Vale fruit. This is akin to your young Latour being softened with Le Pin - a compelling combination of style, substance, mouthfeel and incredible length and breed this wine has left so many tastes in Australia speechless that I'm not really sure what to write anymore. VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED".

The 2004 Tatiarra collection is an utter triumph for Tatiarra's 'dream team' (viticulturists, Ian Rathjen & Bob Wilson together with winemakers Ben Riggs & Peter Flewellyn). Their triumph is only over-shadowed by the loss of Tatiarra co-founder and C.F.O., Bill Spring, who passed away in September. These wines are dedicated to the vision he shared with Nick Chlebnikowski: to produce the world's finest expressions of Shiraz. With the release of the 2004 Tatiarra Collection, that vision is now reality.

The Caravan of Dreams is a tribute to the founder of the Tatiarra Vineyard, Bill Hepburn, who planted the first Shiraz vines some decades ago. The only comfort that he had in those early days was a caravan (in which he lived) and a 'thunderbox' which was located under the shade of a large gum tree. The rest is history. The Tatiarra Caravan of Dreams has captured the hearts of wine lovers world wide. The only set back being its extremely limited production with no potential to increase volumes due to the very nature of a pressings wine.

    Tasting Note:
The colour is again a saturate of black and purple which clings to the walls of the glass, creating the impression of stained glass. Superb lifted nose of blackberry concentrate, black cherry, vanilla and spice. Like the Cambrian Shiraz, from which the pressings wine is derived, this wine delivers an explosive powerhouse of flavour and force. Big, velvet texture and monumental flavour profile. Flavours of liquorice allsorts, vanilla, spice, blackberry and plum are overlaid with black and white pepper. Exceptionally long palate and aftertaste. A TRIUMPH.

A revelation, the 2004 Shiraz Pressings, which was aged 16 months in new American oak, may be the finest Shiraz I have ever tasted from Heathcote. Nearly overwhelming terroir characteristics of graphite, crushed rocks, and wet steel interwoven with acacia flower, crème de cassis and blueberry notes jump from the glass of this multi-layered, superbly concentrated effort, which displays freakish precision. Offering a seamless blend of extraordinary fruit, but also enormous potential, complexity and definition, it is an amazing effort from winemaker Ben Riggs! Anticipated maturity: 2007-2020+

A towering Shiraz that offers a remarkable combination of freshness, power and rich plush fruit.

Amon Ra is Ben Glaetzer’s flagship Shiraz named after an Egyptian God who was considered to be the King of all Gods. According to Ben Glaetzer the key to Amon Ra Shiraz is balancing the fruit and tannin extraction rather the maximising it – “the fruit has such expression that we aim to preserve the characteristics of the vineyard rather than dominate them.” Fruit was sourced from a range of vineyards, aged between 50-130 years old, with a strong emphasis on fruit quality, rather than simply selecting parcels of fruit because they were from old vines. The wine was matured for 16 months in 100% new oak of which 5% was American and 95% French. It was bottled unfiltered.
Impenetrable inky black heart with an equally deep dark red black hue. Freshly crushed ripe blackberry, dark plum and liquorice aromas soar out of the glass trailed by spicy vanillin oak, hints of ripe blueberry, subtle earthy mocha and faint peppered fennel notes. Rich, powerful and incredibly intense, the full bodied palate is tightly packed with opulent blackberry, dark plum, liquorice and ripe blueberry fruits. Monumental in its stature it has a firm yet beautifully integrated tannin framework. Spicy vanillin oak, traces of mocha, earth and peppered fennel elements lurk beneath. Plush yet remarkably fresh it has an explosive finish that seemingly never ends.

This seriously classy 2022 Amon-Ra is seamless and beautifully pitched with focus and refinement. Yet, it delivers powerful aromas of black licorice, fennel seed, and a core of blackberries dusted with star anise enriched by sweet, balanced oak. Impressive energy with a streamlined shape comes forward before building layers of sweet and savory tones. Chewy, fine tannins punctuate a finish of exceptional length. A stunning young wine that will build in bottle. Drink 2028 - 2045.

    Angus Hughson - Vinous

I feel that Ben Glaetzer's Amon-Ra is one of the flag bearers for contemporary Barossan shiraz, certainly when it comes to the more powerful, weighty styles. It has a sense of compression. Wildly concentrated black fruits and palate heft, yet it displays freshness and form; supple, lithe and possessed of northern subregional power writ large. There's an imperious tannin structure but the fruit just sucks it all up and charges on. One for the sybaritic indulger of Barossan wine. It's a ripper. Drink by 2043.

Dave Brookes - James Halliday’s Australian Wine Companion

The 2022 Amon-Ra Shiraz speaks so clearly of the Glaetzer house style: that is to say, sleek, polished, powerful, seamless and fruit-driven. These are wines that speak of the Barossa in their earthy splay of pliable tannin, but they have a vibrance to the fruit that is most attractive. So, while these wines harness the place—this wine could hardly be from anywhere else—they do it in a restrained kind of way. Not that you could call this 2022 Amon-Ra Shiraz "restrained" and get away with it. More to comment on the fact that Barossa is yoked and controlled in this wine. I like it a lot. There are notes of dark chocolate, black cherries, raspberry pastille and even pomegranate molasses, alongside sweet paprika, ironstone and red earth, roasted meat and a throw of tapenade. This is really good. 15% alcohol, sealed under screw cap. Drink 2024-2037.

Erin Larkin - Robert Parker's The Wine Advocate

A wine that speaks with passion about its Barossa heritage. Generously full-flavoured with masses of concentrated dark fruit delivered with layered richness. The small crop from a reasonably challenging vintage produced fruit with the concentration and balance to create a wine like this. It’s opulent, yes, but there is an effortless stylishness that elevates it into another zone. Licorice and blackberry notes with plush dark plum and a lift of spice all play their roles. Fine chalky tannins and plenty of balanced oak add the final touch to a very good wine with staying power. Drink 2025-2050.

Characterised by citrus and based on the original vermouth recipe invented by Antonio Benedetto Carpano, its robust notes of cherry, cola, cloves and bitter orange make it perfect for cocktails like the Americano, Negroni or Manhattan, or simply over ice or with tonic as a complex sipper to savor before or after a meal. 16% Alc./Vol.

    $109. 99

    $1319.88 Dozen
    ABV: 45%

For the local mountaineers and distillers, it's a tradition to harvest the flowers of alpine plants in August and macerate them in alcohol. Each has their own version. Dating back to 1821, 'Chamois' is Dolin's oldest Genepy recipe, made by macerating a range of herbs, but most prominent are the flowers of artemisia mutellina found principally in the high mountains of the Savoy. The resulting elixir is usually served on the rocks or with tonic water, but also makes a welcome addition to hot chocolate, or can add a grassy note to cocktails. 45% Alc./Vol.

Giacomo Conterno is one of those names that immediately grabs the attention of anyone passionate about Piedmont wines. Known for crafting some of the most iconic Barolos in the world, this family-run estate has built its reputation on a commitment to tradition and quality. Their wines are all about power, precision, and aging potential, but they never lose that soulful connection to the land.

Current custodian Roberto Conterno keenly appreciates what being the benchmark for Barolo can mean in a commercial world that makes such a rarity of his wines. In the laboratory and in production, Roberto has adapted and refined equipment like his utterly unique destemmer to operate at remarkable levels of sensitivity. Back into the vineyard, and continuous trials like the massale selections, must pass sufficient time to satisfy Roberto’s fastidious expectations.

The 2020 Barolo Cerretta is a potent, packed wine. Today, the tannins are especially imposing and also larger in scale than the other Barolos in this range. Dark red-toned fruit, orange peel, white pepper and crushed rocks all race out of the glass. This is a wine for those with patience. Drink 2028-2050.

Francia Barbera d'Alba is a lush, powerful and sometimes brooding wine, underpinned by mineral wet rock and graphite notes that add interest and freshness.

    Other Reviews....
The 2022 Barbera d'Alba Vigna Francia is a delicate, understated wine, surprisingly so in this intensely warm, dry year. Sweet red-toned cherry/plum fruit, blood orange and floral top notes are beautifully delineated. Silky tannins wrap it all together in style. I expected to see a more opulent Barbera here. Instead, the 2022 is a bit compact today. That may serve it well over the coming years, hence my optimism about its future prospects. Drink 2027-2034.
