Rich, concentrated and creamy textured with a long, expressive finish that’s borderline opulent.

Keppel Smith established Savaterre in 1996, planting the first vines on his Beechworth property. Since then Savaterre has become revered for producing super premium Chardonnay (planted on decomposed granitic loam soil) in the unique microclimate of the Victorian Alps. Sourced from neighbouring vineyards, the Frere Cadet Chardonnay receives the same treatment as the Estate wine, but at a more approachable price point. Basket pressed to French oak barrels for 18 months of maturation on lees with a further 6 months of resting in bottle before being released.
Brilliant pale straw colour with a subtle greenish tinge around the outskirts and a watery hue. Intense white peach, dried honey and nectarine aromas are complimented by cashew, crème brulee, nougat and spice notes. Rich, concentrated and creamy textured, the palate is engulfed with fleshy ripe peach, nectarine and dried honey flavours. Notions of crème brulee, nougat, subtle cashew and spice fill out the back half. Boasting superb power and depth, it has fresh underlying acidity and a long, expressive finish that’s borderline opulent.

A brilliant example of Beechworth chardonnay's undoubted power formed around a core of citrus, quince, stone fruits, pear, lemon curd biscuit and hazelnut. Complex at every turn, it weaves a course across the palate, tight in nervy energy and tension. It has fine-edged acidity, ripe fruit, streamlined vanillin oak, leesy notes and a budding complexity; remember, it is very much early days for this chardonnay. Comes together well and in perfect tune to close. Drink by 2034.

Whole-berry fruit, small open fermenters, carbonic maceration pre-ferment, 24 days on skins, pressed, maturation in French oak (20% new). Year in, year out, this smart-priced cabernet over-delivers big time. There's so much to enjoy, not the least is the underrated quality of Heathcote cabernet, which simply shines in warmth, texture and oh-so lively, sweet-spiced cabernet fruit. A mild season brings forth a fine-tannined core for a wealth of violets, cassis, bracken and leaves, briar, earth, mulberry, black berries and some peppery, minty-fuelled spices that bring out the best in approachable, enjoyable drinking now… and later. Hints of five-spice, gingerbread, cola, red licorice, redcurrant jelly, earth and pressed citrus blossom. The 2022 Hillside Vineyard Grenache is perfectly representative of the 2022 vintage. It is plush and attractive, appealing and open and offers consummate balance between its component parts: tannins, acidity and fruit notes are all performing in harmony, delivering a wine of freshness and beauty. This wine is the most recent release of this cuvée and marks the youngest wine in this vertical from 2016–2022. This has miles to go before it sleeps, but I daresay it will have all been consumed before the 2021 reaches the end of the clearing of its path. 15% alcohol, sealed under natural cork. Comprises 13 clones, wild fermentation, gentle extraction, post-ferment maceration, maturation in French and Hungarian oak. Sangiovese is a big reason why the Marsons chose their new home in Heathcote. In a top year like '21, they have a solid canvas on which to paint a beautifully expressive sangiovese: fragrant, sweet fruited, earthy, savoury. Combines dark, spiced blood plums, ripe black berries and cherries with striking herbals, sage, anise, earth, woodsmoke and undergrowth. Bottle age is bringing everything together beautifully on a body of ripe tannins. Drink by 2035.

Chris Catlow established Sentio wines in Beechworth in 2013 after seven vintages on the Mornington Peninsula with Kooyong Estate, Portsea Estate and Paringa Estate. Sandro Mosele was one of a handful of mentors driving Chris Catlow in his early years. He has also worked with Sorrenberg and completed 5 vintages at Benjamin Leroux in Burgundy.
The 2025 vintage delivered a good sized crop of exceptional quality fruit. Sourced from three great vineyards in Beechworth - Piano Piano, Serengale and van Malsem, fermentation and aging took place in a combination of large format French oak and barriques, 20% of which were new.

The blend of 66/20/8/6% cabernet sauvignon/merlot/malbec/petit verdot. This is well modulated, each variety in sync to make this complete and harmonious. The upfront fruit flavours, mainly cassis and mulberries, are tempered by lots of savoury inputs – the nutty, cedary oak, the waft of menthol, baking spices and an earthy fragrance, even a freshly whittled pencil, remember that? Medium bodied with densely packed tannins and textural if not a little raspy. Very good. Drink by 2038.

This blend of largely cabernet with smaller contributions from merlot, malbec and petit verdot is sourced from the Woodlands Brook Vineyard and the Wilyabrup Valley. It was introduced a few years ago and has steadily moved up in completeness and complexity. This is the best yet. It has power and poise with deep fruit intensity edged with a minerally chalky tannins and a trace of graphite. This is a serious statement of a Margaret River red blend.

The 2023 Onkaparinga Grenache is starting to come together in the glass, although I have been working hard at encouraging it to do so. The 2023 Grenaches from Clarendon Hills are aligned in their brooding, dark, tarry bouquets. I admit to being surprised by these qualities, given the plushness of fruit inherent on the palates. Here, the 2023 Onkaparinga Grenache is driven by a palate of sweet spicy fruit and shaped by gritty, pliable, sandy tannins. The chew of the wine, on the middle palate, is refreshing and satisfying, and it indicates that the wine will look even better tomorrow. Despite the cooler year and the lower alcohol (for Grenache), this is a bruisingly big wine, with a pure core of red fruit wrapped in a case of tannin, and with bracing acidity. 14% alcohol, sealed under Diam. With a Barossa heritage going back six generations this renown family owned Estate knows a thing or two about producing top notch Shiraz. This offering is one of their icon wines that sells for around $120 but under it’s Nicks Secret guise it can be had at $90.00 off for just $29.99. Only produced in exceptional vintages and impressively packaged with a wax seal, maturation took place in American oak (40% new) for a period of 18 months with only the best barrels selected for the final blend.

Rich, thick and voluptuously textured with a decent whack of vanillin oak behind it, this is trademark old school Barossa Shiraz.

Magnificent density of colour featuring an impenetrable inky black heart and a near equally deep dark red black hue. Heady scents of dark plum, liquorice, ripe blackberry, choc mint and vanillin oak waft through the nostrils followed by some fennel, mocha and spice notes. Rich, thick and voluptuously textured, the hefty palate is saturated with lavish dark plum, liquorice and choc mint flavours. A decent wack of subtlety toasted vanillin oak, fennel, mocha and spice characteristics the undercard. Ripe velvety tannins have a sturdy underbelly. Dense and powerful, it finishes long, plush and opulent.

    Other Reviews….
It may sound like the proverbial broken record, but anyone who has not overstocked their cellar with the superb wines from the 2021 vintage in regions like the Barossa will come to regret their inexplicable dithering. The wine is named after a family ancestor who commissioned the first paddle steamer seen on the Murray River (okay, perhaps not quite the search for the source of the Nile, but still very impressive). After fermentation, maturation was in American oak, 40% of which was new, for a year and a half. The final wine is a barrel selection. Under cork. Near black in colour, with a dark maroon rim, the quality of the year shines through. We have aromas weaving through tobacco leaves, chocolate, beef stock, mocha, cocoa powder, cassis and a hint of gum leaf. There is serious concentration here with a supple, sleek and seductive texture, leading to silky tannins. The wine has balance, density and energy. Still refreshing, it offers superb length and will drink magnificently for the next twenty years. Drink 2026-2046.

A truly marvelous example of this wonderful Barossa vintage. It's made with a distinct handcrafted style from the picking through to the winery, where it's managed in small batches. Deep dark colors on the nose of plummy black fruits, dark chocolate, and subtle spices combined beautifully. The palate packs so much, and yet it is supremely balanced and poised. Spicy dark fruits with a slightly more pronounced mocha richness complementing the berries' dark chocolate notes. Has everything you want to support extended cellaring.

This powerful and graceful Shiraz offers an enticing bouquet of dark-fruit richness, smoked game, assorted nuts, and mocha. On the palate, it exhibits superb weight and seductive complexity with a velvety texture. The wine is wonderfully harmonious and seamless, showcasing outstanding depth and opulence with an impressively long, gratifying finish. At its best: now to 2039.

The Glen Grant distillery is named after its two founders, James and John Grant who built the distillery in Rothes in 1840. After their death, the son of James, Major James Grant took over the business, and built another distillery across the road naming it “Glen Grant II” (today known as Caperdonich). The Major always aimed at producing a first rate malt, and so designed the distilleries especially tall, slender stills and purifiers himself. He reputedly enjoyed leading guests through his exotic gardens to a nearby falls where, taken from his secret whisky safe, he’d offer drams of Glen Grant accompanied by spring water drawn from the same Speyside burn that still feeds the distillery today. When the Major died, his grand son, Major Douglas Mackessack took over the distillery, continuing its success.

Like most distilleries, Glen Grant closed its doors during the two World Wars due to a lack of barley and has since changed ownership several times. Most recently, the distillery was sold in 2006 to the Italian group Campari as a result of the acquisition of Allied Domecq by Pernod Ricard. Glen Grant remains one of the world's best-selling single malts (being especially popular in Italy), and is also available in various independent and vintage bottlings.

Tasting note: Pale straw colour. Moderate bouquet yields semi sweet, mildly fruity scents (nashi pear) followed by hints of dried grass. Light to medium bodied with subtle flavours of biscuity malt, vanilla and spice. Finishes dry and clean with a touch of fruitiness offering freshness. A little short. Light easy drinking. 40% Alc./Vol.

Other Reviews: (95 points) - (n23.5) OK: let's take turns in counting the rungs on the barley ladder here...the usual crisp aroma, but softened by deft, if unspecific fruitiness (maybe the distant aroma of a very old orange and by no means unpleasant!), myriad vanilla and butterscotch notes can do without the toffee one; (t24) magnificent! A malty delivery which simultaneously melts in the mouth, yet offers granite-like barley that crashes into your teeth; the star, perhaps are the sugars which vary from caster, through golden syrup and pans out somewhere in the muscovado range - curiously honey-free, though; (f23) a tad tangy, though the caramel returns to turn out the lights after the butterscotch and marzipan say goodnight...; (b23.5) unquestionably the best official 10yo bottling i have tasted from this distillery. Absolutely nails it! Oh, and had they bottled this at 46% abv and without the trimmings...my word! Might well have been a contender for Scotch Whisky of the Year. It won't be long before word finally gets out just how bloody good this distillery is. - Jim Murrays Whisky Bible 2013

The fruit here is sourced from the twelve-hectare Vine Vale Vineyard, which was planted in 1960. Grapes are destemmed and after fermentation, spend a year and a half in French oak barrels for maturation. Dark maroon in hue, aromas of spices, herbs, cloves, soy, aniseed, blackberries, bay leaves and cranberries are all evident. Plush and generous, there are abundant tannins, which are fine and furry. Acidity runs the length. This is bright, fresh and that intensity never wavers. A thoroughly enjoyable Barossa Shiraz. Enjoy this over the next ten to twelve years. Drink 2026-2038.

From a vineyard in Coldstream. Hand picked and optically sorted. Two weeks in open fermenters before being pressed to older barriques and puncheons; 20% whole bunches. A luminous crimson purple. Fragrant and spicy with red cherry and raspberry fruit aromas. Light to medium bodied and quite delicious straight off the bat, this is an excellent addition to the Bicknell FC range. Drink by 2028.

A rich, succulent mid weighted GSM that boasts terrific power.

Dark red black tinged core with a red to dark red hue. Pronounced red to dark raspberry, cherry and red liquorice scents blossom out of the glass trailed by some vanillin spice, subtle scorched earth and peppered herb notes. Rich and luscious, the mid weighted is awash with red to dark raspberry, plum, red liquorice and ripe cherry fruits. Plump but not heavy, dried herb and peppered earth elements lie underneath. Boasting terrific power it has velvet smooth tannins and a long succulent finish.

Mid-crimson with a spice-edged bouquet of red and dark plum, mulberry and red cherry fruits. Hints of purple flowers, crushed stone, dried citrus rind, some distant blood orange and star anise. Medium bodied with light, sandy tannins and bright acidity. This is very easy to drink indeed! Drink by 2035.
