- Kweichow Flying Fairy Moutai (500ml) - 53%CHINA$518. 00Bottle$6216.00 DozenABV: 53%
President Nixon famously enjoyed Moutai during his visit to China where it's considered the 'national liquor’. Made from red sorghum grain grown in Guizhou (Kweichou) Province, the fermented mash is distilled seven times. Batches are kept separate then matured for years in earthenware jars which allow the alcohol to ‘breathe’. Finally, the distillates are subject to an elaborate vatting process, supervised by a Master Blender to achieve the spirit's unique aroma and flavour.
Often served at state banquets and presented as a diplomatic gift, Moutai's floral / yeasty / grainy flavour has also been compared to soy sauce, while its popularity is such that limited editions have become highly collectable. According to a report by Fortune Magazine, the spirit's "fiery flavour and potential to appreciate in price is driving blistering demand. That in turn has pushed its market value to more than $145 billion, well past British whisky giant Diageo."
This edition is known more commonly as the ‘original’ Moutai, characterized by its distinct flavour and mellow yet pleasant after-taste. The "Flying Fairy" was awarded the honourable title of National Liquor, the highest accolade for any wine or spirit in China. 53% Alc./Vol.
- Zuidam Rogge (Rye) Genever (1000ml)NETHERLANDS$84. 99Bottle$1019.88 DozenABV: 35%If you're looking for something truly different in the world of gin, this is it.
Zuidam, who produce one of the finest rye whiskies on our shelves, have created a very special genever that combines the spiciness of rye mixed with the fresh flavours of juniper, licorice and aniseed. A 100% rye grain mash (50% malted / 50% unmalted) is triple distilled in a small pot still then aged in new 200 litre American oak barrels for a minimum of five years. After that period the botanicals are added. Half of the spirit is then redistilled before being blended with the other half and bottled. The result is the best of both worlds: a genever with the texture and depth of an aged spirit combined with youthful botanical zest. All bottles are hand labelled with a ribbon and a gold wax seal. Very limited stocks. 35% Alc./Vol. - Galliano Black Sambuca (500ml)ITALY$50. 99Bottle$611.88 DozenABV: 30%
Packaged to impress like it’s forebear, “Galliano Original”, Galliano Black is a softer, slightly lighter version of the genre. 30% alc/vol.

Puerto de Indias Strawberry Gin (700ml)SPAIN$79. 99Bottle$959.88 DozenABV: 37.5%Spain’s fourth biggest selling gin. Perfect in bright Summery cocktails.
This pink tinted gin is infused with strawberries grown in Huelva in Andalusia (reportedly they're the finest in Europe). It was conceived from a ‘mistake’: After a failed attempt at making a strawberry liqueur, the Master-distiller added the berry mash to a new gin and found the combination worked brilliantly. Puerto de Indias' hugely popular Strawberry edition is now part of the core range and complements the 'Classic' and 'Pure Black' gins in their portfolio. What makes this gin that little more special, is that Puerto de Indias insist on high quality, fresh ingredients in their products. Not just the strawberries but all the other botanicals are carefully sourced, including juniper, coriander, lime, grapefruit, orange peel and lemon peel. The result is perfect in Summer cocktails. You would expect no less from this Seville-based venture, already well known as a producer of Pacharan and Anisette, they've been producing spirits since 1880 making it one of the oldest distilleries in Andalusia.
Tasting note: Brilliant / crystal clear with the palest pink-straw coloured blush. Aromas of over-ripe strawberries with trace pink grapefruit and mandarine peel. A soft, silky, medium dry and fruity gin with distinct strawberry notes over distant botanicals. Moderate berry confectionary aftertaste. Shows good sweet/dry balance. 37.5% Alc./Vol.

Jean Fillioux Tres Vieux Grande Champagne Cognac (700ml)Cognac, FRANCE$220. 00Bottle$2640.00 DozenABV: 40%Tasting note: [from a 20ml sample] Brassy gold with some very fine sediment evident. Soft and shy bouquet requires some coaxing slowly releasing floral scents of dried grass, whitepepper, prunes and cocoa. Still coy after 5 minutes aeration. Superb poise to the middle weight delivery which is luscious, honeyed, building with flavours of dried figs, toasty oak, rancio and subtle white pepper. Fig and finely tuned tannins in the aftertaste. Excellent length. 40% Alc./Vol. Other reviews... The brandies in this bottling are over two decades old. The opening bouquet is laden with tobacco leaf, vanilla extract and dried prunes. Rancio becomes apparent in the third nosing pass, in the husky perfume of hard cheese and old oak barrels. Toasty, smoky flavors of sugar biscuits, hard cheese and overripe grapes impress the taste buds on entry. By midpalate, flavors include vanilla bean, plums, black raisins, paraffin and rancio. - Caorunn Small Batch Gin (700ml)Cromdale, SCOTLAND$94. 99Bottle$1139.88 DozenABV: 41.8%
Made from five Celtic botanicals and Scottish spring water, Caorunn Gin (pronounced ‘ka-roon’) takes its name from the Rowan Berry - the botanical that forms the soul of the gin (unlike most gins which are juniper based). Other unusual botanicals include Coul Blush Apple, Heather, Bog Myrtle and Dandelion.
Other reviews… A Scottish gin, you say? From the Balmenach whisky distillery in Scotland’s Speyside region comes this crisp gin, with a light juniper and citrus scent and a surprisingly warm finish with a prickle of anise and alcohol. The distiller notes list a host of intriguing-sounding botanicals, including rowan berry, heather and Coul Blush apple, which unfortunately are undetectable. However, the clean, quinine-like feel suggests this would be a fine match for G&T lovers. 41.8% Alc./Vol.

Francois Voyer XO Gold Grande Champagne Cognac Carafe (700ml)Cognac, FRANCE$280. 00Bottle$3360.00 DozenABV: 40%"Bang-For-Your-Buck old Cognac for sure." - whiskyfun.com
Produced on the Voyer family's estate, planted to just 28 hectares in between Verrières and Ambleville in Grande Champagne, this full bodied 20-30 year old cognac presents attractive though restrained aromatics of ripe apricot, fig and subtle dark chocolate followed by hints of vanilla and clove. Soft and clean with nice length, continuing the dried fruit theme, before fine, drying tannins add freshness and finesse. Lingers with clove and vanillan oak followed by a touch of anise. The 'Gold' designation refers to the fact that it received gold medals in every competition it entered. 40% Alc./Vol.
Other reviews... Some 25 years old Grande Champagne, 100% ugni blanc. Colour: amber. Nose: oh my, this is something else! The fruitiness is immense here, almost extravagant, as this baby is ridden with peaches, bananas, mangos, papayas, watermelons, grapes, blood oranges, and even tinned litchis and rambutans… An amazing nose, equidistant from some 1980s Bushmills, 1970s Benriach, and 1960s Lochside and perhaps Tomatin. Capice? Mouth: same, more or less, with a bit of spicy old oak and touches of sweet wine. Rather sweet chenin from Loire. Other than that, it’s a whole fruit salad with a few spoonfuls of Cointreau or Grand-Marnier. Indeed, as it should be. Finish: short to medium, extremely fruity. Papayas are back. Some candy sugar. Comments: I wouldn’t say it’s the most complex old Cognac ever, but this huge fruitiness is totally spectacular and impressive. Plus, psst, the prices are extremely fair at Voyer’s. Bang-For-Your-Buck old Cognac for sure. 87 points - whiskyfun.com
Notes from the producers... Nose: Down among the flowers: touches of jasmine, clove, combined with peach and plums. The old maturation of this Cognac has given it its vanilla aroma and this light and sweet aroma that only an old Cognac has.Palate: The outstanding point is probably the great elegance which is one of the major characteristics of the Premier Cru Grande Champagne, fully represented here by the delicacy of aromas as well as the subtlety of its palate.

High West Rendezvous Rye Whiskey (700ml)Park City, Utah, UNITED STATES$149. 99Bottle$1799.88 DozenABV: 46%High West Distillery and Saloon started with one man’s passion to make a great Rocky Mountain Whiskey. Proprietor and distiller David Perkins married his background as a biochemist, his love of bourbon and cooking, and his passion for the American West to bring the craft of small-batch distilling back to Utah. Rendezvous Rye is a blend of two exotic straight rye whiskies, with early batches marrying the rich aromatic qualities of a 16-year-old, 95% rye mash bill whiskey with the bold, spicy properties of 6-year-old rye to create a full-flavoured, complex whiskey, bottled non chill filtered for maximum mouthfeel. However, like most of High West’s production, that changes over time. More recent reports suggest it's a 4 to 9 year old, some of it sourced from MGP (95% rye), the remainder being High West’s own 80% rye, 20% malted rye whiskey. Ratios are not disclosed.
[BATCH 12H14 tasted] Deep burnished copper / gold ochre colour. First inhalations reveal a mild shellac note alongside charry American oak. Several minutes in the glass yields hints of mint and old liquorice strap alongside spicy, apply rye that's enriched with further exposure becoming more apple crumble / toffee apple like. The palate delivers a classic, punchy rye. A full, round delivery is augmented by lively, perfectly balancing spices. Crisp, dry mouthfeel. Excellent concentration. Terrific balance. Long spicy rye aftertaste with a faint trace of liquorice emerging late. Loads of personality and complexity. Non chill filtered. 46% Alc./Vol.
Other reviews... One of those ryes where you find yourself slapping the back of your head to overcome the eyewatering sharpness of the grain. 93.5 points - Jim Murray's Whisky Bible 2024
...Thanks to the high rye content, this whisky is very spicy, with cinnamon, crisp mint and fennel. Underlying sweet notes of caramel, molasses, vanilla, macaroon, cocoa, and candied fruit … enhance the whiskey’s complexity. But, in the end, the rye is the victor, emerging with a vengeance and giving the whiskey a bold, warming spice finish.” 95 points John Hansell, whiskyadvocate.com
Strong but intriguing. Medium color and body, with rich aromas of burnt orange and caramel. The flavor also reflected burnt orange and caramel, plus a spicy tinge reminiscent of cassia bark or Red-Hot candies. The finish lingers, pleasant, inviting and warm. Might be good for Manhattans—a touch of fruit or sweetness would go well with this rye. Excellent value. 96 points - wineenthusiast.com

A blend of 87% Shiraz and 13% Cabernet Sauvignon, 260 cases of this wine were produced. This is the first Grange to incorporate wine from the Kalimna region in the Barossa. This was a revelation. An astonishing, great wine with remarkable vigor and freshness, this wine has a dark garnet color with considerable amber at the edge. A sweet nose of mushrooms, roasted herbs, tar, red and black fruits, and underbrush is followed by a wine with considerable opulence, flesh, and vivacity. The wine has terrific harmony and a long finish. It is an amazing effort that should continue to drink well for another 7-10 years.

- Glenkinchie 10 Year Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)Lowlands, SCOTLAND$250. 00Bottle$3000.00 DozenABV: 43%
Note: Product has come from a private collection and as such has some minor scuffing/scratches/handling marks. Actual product pictured.
The 10 year old Glenkinchie was superseded by the 12 Year Old. This one was on the market through the 1990s. Now discontinued. The lowlands whiskies of Scotland in many respects reflect the landscape they are produced in. The countryside is certainly not without natural beauty, however it lacks the dramatic and rugged contrasts of the Highland and Island regions. Lowland whiskies consequently are generally used as background material for blends and have historically been unappreciated (or at least largely neglected) by malt enthusiasts.
Nevertheless, it would be a mistake to belittle the Lowlands. Their whiskies offer a refreshing contrast to the heavier, peatier malts of the north. Indeed, whiskies such as the twelve year old from the Glenkinchie distillery possess unique qualities of their own which repay due attention. Located near the village of Pencaitland and first founded in the 1830's, the Glenkinchie distillery has since been renovated and today includes a small museum.
Tasting note: This tasty, refreshing malt is typical of the character of lowland whiskies. Soft, smokey and sweetly aromatic. The palate reveals a grassy sweetness balanced with a warming, slightly spicy, drying finish. Exceptionally smooth. These qualities of Glenkinchie make it an excellent pre-dinner drink. 43% alc./vol.
"This is the smokiest of all Lowland malts. Some drink this pale, slightly dry, 10-year-old as an alternative to sherry." - Fiona Ennys, Liverpool Echo, 26 January 1996.
"Lowland malts are generally accessible...Glenkinchie being dry and complex." Andrew Barr, Sunday Times, 14 January 1996.
- Frangelico Hazelnut Liqueur (700ml)ITALY$52. 99Bottle$635.88 DozenABV: 24%
Deep yellow-straw in colour with intense hazelnut and vanilla aromas and flavours, this luscious medium-bodied, beautifully balanced hazelnut liqueur has become a bar standard. According to the legend, Frangelico lived three centuries ago in a hilly area bound by the river “Po” in Italy. He lived as a hermit (hence the bottle shape) and through his love of nature and knowledge of it’s secrets created unique recipes for liqueurs. The most popular one of all was a liqueur made from wild hazelnuts with infusions of berries and flowers to enrich the flavour. The tradition of “Frangelico” was born. 24% alc/vol.
Other reviews.... Pale golden amber with an a orangish hue. Robust, roasted nut, and mocha aromas. A round, satiny entry leads to a lightly sweet light-to medium-bodied palate with sugar-coated hazelnut, mocha nut fudge, delicate brown spices, and subtle fruitiness. Finishes with a very smooth, delicate fade fade of nuts and frosting. Brilliantly refined with delicate natural roasted nut and spice flavors. A benchmark liqueur.

2017 Chateau Pape ClementPessac Leognan, Bordeaux, FRANCE$220. 00Bottle$2640.00 DozenClosure: CorkNamed after its most famous owner, Pope Clement V, Chateau Pape Clement in Pessac Leognan makes both red and white wine from their 32.5 hectare vineyard. Vineyards for the red wine is planted to 60% Cabernet Sauvignon and 40% Merlot, while the soils here are a complex mix of gravel and clay over a base of clay, limestone and sandstone. Maturation takes place in 100% new French oak, and while Bernard Magrez has refined the style since taking over winemaking duties the wines are still rich and lush in style with a concentration of ripe fruit.
Other Reviews....
The current blend of the 2017 Pape Clement is 55% Cabernet Sauvignon and 45% Merlot. Deep garnet-purple colored, it sings of crushed black cherries, black raspberries and mulberries with hints of lilacs and dusty soil. Medium to full-bodied with a firm, grainy frame and wonderful freshness, it possesses great elegance and effortless intensity with a mineral-tinged finish.
92-94 points
Lisa Perrotti-Brown - Wine Advocate #236 (April 2018)This has solid ripeness, with plum and cassis notes flowing through, along with an ambitious oak regimen that results in ample toasted vanilla hints. This clamps down a touch on the finish, but there’s good purity and freshness, with fresh acidity buried within, leaving me optimistic.—J.M.
91-94 points
Wine SpectatorThis is very dense for the vintage on the center palate and then rolls out on the palate. Full-bodied, tight and tannic. Very polished and refined at the end. Precise. A little more cabernet sauvignon in the blend gives this the tension.
95-96 points
James SucklingThis is a hugely dense, extracted wine, possibly too much so, displaying a hard edge that smothers the ripe fruit. Giving it the benefit of the doubt, it certainly will not be drinkable before 2024.
90-92 points
Wine EnthusiastThe 2017 Pape Clément was not touched by the frost and was picked from 15 September to 3 October, manually de-stemmed berry by berry with some of the ripe stems added back into the blend (like Les Carmes Haut-Brion down the road). Malolactic is done in barrel where it aged for 18 months. It offers intense black cherry, raspberry, fig and sous-bois scents on the nose, tightly coiled at the moment with just a hint of cedar and tobacco. The palate is medium-bodied with ripe tannin, a mixture of red and black fruit, touches of cedar and white pepper, leading to a structured and fresh finish that leaves a spicy aftertaste. Classic in style, this Pape Clément will benefit from several years in bottle.
92-94 points
Neal Martin - VinousThe 2017 Pape Clément is fabulous. One of the rare 2017s with a real sense of structure, Pape Clément possesses dazzling intensity from start to finish. A rush of dark cherry, plum, chocolate and grilled herb notes hits the palate as this majestic, towering wine shows off its personality. Time in the glass brings out a brighter and more floral set of flavors. The 2017 is the first vintage made with a portion of whole clusters, an inspiration Bernard Magrez takes from Châteauneuf-du-Pape, where he recently bought a small property. Quite simply, the 2017 Pape Clément is a magnificent wine by any measure. Don't miss it. The only problem with the 2017 is that yields are down 40% because of frost.
94-97 points
Antonio Galloni - VinousThe Grand Vin 2017 Château Pape Clément is 55% Cabernet Sauvignon and 45% Merlot still aging in 60% new French oak. Harvest ran from the 15th of September to the 3rd of October, and I was able to taste this beauty on three separate occasions. Its deep purple color is followed by a blockbuster bouquet of ripe black cherries, blackberries, blueberries, graphite, and licorice. One of the more powerful, concentrated wines in the vintage, this medium to full-bodied effort has terrific purity of fruit, a mouthfilling texture, and present, ripe tannin. Too many 2017s lack excitement, but that’s not the case here. Give bottles 2-3 years and enjoy over the following 15+ years.

Grants Cask Editions No.1 Ale Cask Finish Blended Scotch Whisky (700ml)Banffshire, SCOTLAND$99. 99Bottle$1199.88 DozenABV: 40%Note: Product has come from a private collection and as such has some minor scuffing/scratches/handling marks. Actual product pictured.
The influences of Balvenie and Glenfiddich (also produced by William Grant and Sons) are the basis for Grant's blended whiskies. The company has recently expanded its range with three new releases offering exceptional value for money and unusual depth of flavour by blended whisky standards. In fact, in a blind line up, you'd be forgiven for thinking these were single malts.Like most distilleries with history, Grant's have accrued some colourful stories. Soon after William Grant began distilling in 1887 his sole distributor collapsed, and Grant was left with no outlet for continuing sales. He urgently needed to invent and market his own brand. In desperation, he passed the challenge onto his son-in-law, who, so the story goes, made over five hundred calls to various firms around the country. He managed to sell one dozen bottles! Business gradually improved, and the original Grants we know today was suitably marketed under the "Steadfast" label. The product enhanced its image to cater for numerous international markets, including the adoption of its striking triangular bottle. It's been rumoured that the whisky had favour amongst several heavy drinking Hollywood actors, purely on account of the bottle shape. If they dropped it on stage during rehearsals, it was guaranteed not to roll too far!
On release, Grant's Cask Edition No.1 is reputedly the only Scotch whisky to be finished in barrels that have previously held ale. Master Blender, Brian Kinsman, fills casks with Edinburgh Ale for 30 days, then replaces it with aged Grant’s whisky. The blend then mellows for up to four months, picking up "...creaminess and silky malt flavours".
Tasting note: Pale gold appearance with a pale straw hue. Moderate aromas offer notes of sweet grains, dusty cocoa and old cigar box. Unusual. Exceptionally soft and pure throughout, the palate delivers medium dry flavours that are difficult to pin down, with dried fruit / cocoa notes combining with almost chewy grains into the aftertaste. Fascinating and different, but not ground breaking, yet given the more than fair pricing, this should be a no brainer buy for whisky completionists. 40% Alc./Vol.

Sweetdram Whisky Amaro (700ml)SCOTLAND$99. 99Bottle$1199.88 DozenABV: 40%An Amaro made with a blend of Scotch single malt and single grain, infused with nine botanicals: allspice, hibiscus, coriander, lovage, kola, quassia, rhubarb, lemon and lingonberry. The whisky base is a blend of Ardmore seven year old, North British single grain and Invergordon 12 year old. The whiskies were blended in-house, then infused with botanicals and lightly sweetened with urban honey from rooftop hives in Edinburgh. It’s a cross-genre take, bringing together two seemingly incompatible categories that works a treat. Tasting note: Pale ruby red. Dry, rooty, raw beetroot-like aromas give way to bittersweet, warming notes suggesting clove, cola, smokey cardamom, rhubarb, all-spice and bitter peel. The aroma-range follows in a full-bodied, highly textural Amaro with a medley of turmeric, saffron, quinine and lemon peel-like notes. The finish is earthy, spicy, bittersweet and long. Hartshorn Sheep Whey Gin (500ml)Tasmania, AUSTRALIA$99. 99Bottle$1199.88 DozenABV: 40%Taking craft-production to a new scale is 'Hartshorn', a Tasmanian upstart making boutique batches of Vodka and Gin from their farm sheep whey. Ryan Hartshorn and family run what is presently the smallest distillery in Australia: batches of ten bottles are not unusual. The dedicated hands-on approach is extended to the packaging with every label hand painted. Botanicals are vapour infused using a 50L glass column still (as opposed to steeped) giving the Gin a more delicate and subtle bouquet. Ryan adds, "Besides the juniper, my aim with this Gin was to only use Tasmanian native botanicals. I discovered some very impressive native berries, leaves and seeds however they could only be wild harvested which meant I could not get enough quantity to make it practical enough for an ongoing production. I have still been able to use some Tasmanian native botanicals however I have now broadened the list to only Australian native botanicals (plus the Juniper). I'm using six Native Australian botanicals with three of them never used before in any other Gin." Tasting note: [Batch 1 tasted] Clear. Atypical gin aromas of banana pudding / fruit yoghurt over later scents of citrus peel, rosewater and subtle piney juniper. A creamy, light, floral-soft entry. Medium-dry, low-key flavours of fruit yoghurt, orange spice cake and delicate white pepper / pine-like notes balancing the finish. Hints of rosewater and juniper late in the aftertaste. An eclectic and original arrangement of unusual botanical notes. Unfiltered. 40% Alc./Vol. -

Lillet Blanc Aperitif (750ml)Podensac, Bordeaux, FRANCE$44. 99Bottle$539.88 DozenABV: 17%Closure: CorkLillet (pronounced lee-lay) is an aperitif wine; a type of drink traditionally enjoyed before a meal. It originated in 1887 in the Bordeaux region of France, a creation of the Lillet brothers, Paul and Raymond, distillers and merchants of spirits, soda, and candies. It was one of the first tonic wines, and became increasingly popular around the turn of the 20th century when tonic drinks were touted as good for the health. The ban against absinthe in 1915 also contributed to the popularity of the drink. In the 1950s and 60s, the golden age of cocktails, Lillet became the centerpiece of a number of drinks served in the fashionable bars and restaurants of New York City, where it was sometimes served flambé. It was also popularly served with gin in England.
While Lillet was originally a bitter tonic drink, the quinine content has now been reduced. There are now two types made - Lillet Blanc and Lillet Rouge. The Rouge version, made with red wine, appeared on the market in 1962. There are a number of options when serving Lillet. Lillet Blanc can be used in a Martini with gin and vodka and a lemon peel garnish; this drink, called a Vesper, was invented by the character James Bond in Ian Fleming's 1953 novel Casino Royale. Both can be served plain over ice or as the main ingredient in a number of cocktails.
After months of hard work we have secured good reliable stocks in time for summer and we are thrilled to have ended the Lillet drought in Australia. However, it's among the hottest items in town and it won't last forever. We advise you to stock up now to avoid disappointment. We are aware of this sounding like a cliche, but we can't think of the last time we made such a statement.
Tasting Notes: Brilliant pale straw colour with water like hue. Top notes of candied lime and orange blossom, above honey, ripe peach and apricot with subtle hints of strawberry and talc emerging. The palate delivers flavours of lime, marmalade, very ripe peaches and apricot above a layer of honey. Creamy mouthfeel. Back palate flavours of marmalade, peach and apricot persist through the crisp clean finish. Terrific length, depth and balance. Superb! Serve Chilled. 17% Alc./Vol. -

Tasting note: Gold colour with pale straw hue. The plush nose delivers aromas of creme caramel, ripe malt and spice. Exceptionally soft, round palate entry fans out into flavours of sweet dried fruits, cinnamon and clove. Perfect balance, finishing a little short, followed by a progressively drying aftertaste of vanilla wafer biscuit, caramel and honeycombe. Deliciously uncomplicated. 40% Alc./Vol.
Other reviews... Beautiful golden amber color. Sweet aromas of anise cookie, peppery spice, and cocoa. A round, supple entry leads to a smooth delicately sweet medium-to full-bodied palate with caramel, toasted nuts, and peppery spices. Finishes with a long hay, mineral, and caramel fade.

The lychee is a rare sub tropical fruit originating in Southern China where the lychee is famed as "the King of Fruits". The lychee grows to approximately 3-4 centimetres in size, oval to rounded-heart shaped with a bumpy skin that is red in color. Once the skin is peeled, the crisp juicy flesh is white or pinkish, translucent and glossy like the consistency of a grape. Lychees have a sub-acid sweetness with a wonderful freshness. The fruit is also high in the antioxidant Vitamin C and the essential mineral Potassium.
Uncompromising on quality, G.E. Massenez is today universally acclaimed for his 'eaux de vie' (fruit brandies) as well as his crème liqueurs. The company has won many awards at international exhibitions. 24% alc/vol

The success and quick demise of the 2009 Ardbeg Supernova had peat lovers panting in their kilts all the way to St.Andrews for another. And here it is!For those who have never heard of; or experienced Ardbeg Supernova, it was the peatiest whisky Ardbeg made. Over 100ppm (phenols per million, a measure used to dictate the smokiness of a whisky). Contrast this with the likes of Laphroaig or Ardbeg 10 at roughly 50ppm and bombs away.
When deliberating as to what differences between this years and last may be, Ardbeg have put it simply: "The new 2010 expression is out of this world – even deeper, stronger and earthier than the award-winning 2009 edition." This release also boasts a slightly higher ABV at 60.1% compared to the 59.6% on the previous years release.

The nose is quite rich and full exhibiting aromas of toasty yeast lees, almond, baked bread and hazelnut. Reflective of the nose the palate possesses big rich flavours of toast, yeast lees, almonds and baked bread finishing with some nutty hazelnut like characters on the back palate. Clean dry finish with a nice creamy mouthfeel. Long aftertaste of toasty yeast lees, almond and hazelnut.

The complex bouquet reflects the primary fermentation in oak casks; the palate no less so thanks to the quality of the premier and grand cru reserves, also matured in oak. But it’s all a question of degree; there’s a core of citrussy acidity underwriting the freshness and length of the wine. 7 years on lees; disgorged December ’20, 7g/l dosage.

James Hallidays Top 100 2021Composed of 48% Pinot Noir, 32% Chardonnay, and the rest Meunier, the NV Champagne Sous Bois is always aged on lees for five years. Made with 26% reserve wine and two grams per liter dosage, it pours a touch deeper golden straw color and is aromatic of fresh baked bread, marzipan, peaches, and marmalade. It’s not as oaky as I’d remembered it from previous tastings, with the blend feeling more harmonious and integrated. Full-bodied but not overly opulent, it fills the palate with a supple richness although it’s fully dry, and its nuttiness is still present but doesn’t dominate the wine. It would be paired exceptionally well with Comte cheese. 2 grams per liter of dosage, disgorged the second quarter of 2023. Drink 2024-2040.

Paul Giraud Heritage Cognac (700ml)Cognac, FRANCE$799. 00Bottle$9588.00 DozenABV: 40%Cognac is a huge earner for France, with exports frequently representing over 90% of total cognac production. Well over 100 million bottles are sent to key markets such as Asia and the U.S. each year. At the same time, more than half of the cognac market continues to be controlled by three major houses: Hennessy, Martell and Remy Martin. In marginal markets like Australia, this has meant the availability of artisan products has been over shadowed by the promotional power of the 'big three'. Unfortunately, big name brand V.S. and V.S.O.P. bottlings, while generally offering pleasant enough drinking, of late have delivered nothing to get particularly enthused by.
The Giraud family have been growing grapes around France since 1650, yet only decided to produce Cognac under their own name in the 1980s. A long time associate of Giraud informed us 'Giraud became frustrated selling his thirty-five year old cognacs to Remy-Martin. His cognac became a part of the blend, Louis XV [currently selling for around A$2000.] This was a very brave move during such times - he was one of the first to do so, but we are thankful he did, he paved the way for many more to come.'
Paul Giraud Heritage has been maturing quietly in the family cellars for over fifty five years. Presumably this material was destined to be sold off to Remy-Martin, Giraud's vision and bravery allows us the opportunity to taste this extraordinary spirit, bottled directly from the cask, without the taint of caramel or other younger Cognacs.
Deeply satisfying. Among the very finest spirits on the shelves at Nicks Wine Merchants. Tasting Notes: Pale gold colour with water like hue. An astonishing nose. Pristinely clean perfumed aromas of spice, marmalade, cedar, peach, almond and a hint of talc leap from the glass. As the Cognac warms, the array of aromas changes dramatically, continuing unprecedented levels of aromatic pleasure. The palate entry is plush, warm and velvety - almost seductive - offering wave upon wave of strong spicy plum pudding, stone fruit, exotic spices, vanilla, with a vibrant, fresh background. The finish is exceptional, much like this tasting note it just keeps going and going and going. Perfect balance. Extraordinarily long peach, apricot and spice aftertaste. Among the very finest spirits on the shelves at Nicks Wine Merchants, and (relatively speaking of course) a bargain - we recommend pouring this at least twenty minutes prior to tasting to allow this spirit to blossom. 40.0% Alc./Vol.

Tanqueray No.Ten Gin (700ml)UNITED KINGDOM$99. 99Bottle$1199.88 DozenABV: 47.3%English brands don’t get much more ubiquitous than Tanqueray, the British gin which is one of the best-selling spirits in the world. However, there's a premium alternative that is less well known. Made from 100% grain neutral spirits, Tanqueray No.Ten is one of the only gins produced using hand-picked, whole-fruit, fresh botanicals. Under the watchful eye of Tanquerays master distiller, a small batch distillation imparts an exquisite depth and character helping to develop the 'heart' of the spirit through redistillation. This is a gin to create the classic Martini. Alternatively drink straight up, chilled with a twist of lemon. And, naturally, the extra ABV makes all the difference. 47.3% Alc./Vol.
Other reviews... strikes an immediate impression in its iconic, monolithic bottle, one of the best-designed decanters on the market. The gin inside clearly adheres to the Tanqueray formula, but it extends that with a bit more citrus. The company claims it is the only gin to use handpicked fresh fruit in its distillation, including white grapefruit, orange, and lime. There is also chamomile in the mix, a curious addition. What comes through in the finish is, of course, juniper, and all three of the citrus fruits mentioned. Grapefruit, for sure, with orange and lime more of an afterthought. I definitely prefer Ten to regular Tanqueray, and arguably worth the upgrade in price. - drinkhacker.com
Clear. Bright, deep juniper and citrus aromas. Medium body. Crisp, assertive juniper bite, with a very smooth, oily mouth feel. Tremendous depth of flavor in the complex array of botanicals. Beautifully balanced with a zest of lemon in the long, lingering finish. World class gin, clearly designed for decadently elegant martinis. 97 points (Superlative) - tastings.com

Bokma Oude Friesche Genever (Jenever) (1000ml)Amsterdam, NETHERLANDS$84. 99Bottle$1019.88 DozenABV: 38%Closure: Screw CapGenever (also known as Jenever or Jeniever) Dutch Gin is a full bodied malty spirit that was introduced to the Northern Netherlands in the 16th century by Southern Netherlanders who were fleeing the Spanish inquisition. Although it was originally created for purely medicinal reasons, (juniper berries being of diuretic value in flushing the urinary system) the popularity of this hardy new spirit spread so quickly that it soon was hailed as Holland’s national drink.
There are two main types of Genever: ‘Oude’ (Old) and ‘Jonge’ (Young). This is not a matter of aging, but of distilling techniques. Jonge Genever can contain no more than 15% malt wine and 10 grams of sugar per litre where Oude Genever must contain at least 15% malt wine but not more than 20 grams of sugar per litre, it is straw-hued, relatively sweet and aromatic.
The Bokma product was originally a family operated business. Freerk Klazes Bokma gained the rights to establish a distillery in 1894 and later in 1971 they entered into a joint venture with Heineken enhancing its distribution network which enabled Bokma to become one of the Netherlands most beloved spirits. It is now a part of the Lucas Bols portfolio.
An interesting fact when contemplating the use of Genever: in 1862 a celebrity bartender by the name of Jerry Thomas produced the world's first cocktail and bartending book titled 'The Bar-tenders Guide or How To Mix Drinks'. Within appeared recipes based around four basic cocktail spirits being brandy, rum, whisky and not surprisingly, Genever the classic predecessor of London Dry Gin. Oude Genever can also be served neat, straight from the freezer. Enjoy!

Other reviews... Wine & Spirits Magazine wrote: '(Jack Daniel's) Single Barrel is a rich red-amber color. The nose, surprisingly smooth for its proof, is full of wood and peachy fruit. Its dry, woody, taste has a nice glow but no afterbite. Cut with water, the wood and the underlying corn flavors are more pronounced, and it has a lot of strength to the finish.'
... The Malt Advocate wrote: 'Jack Daniel's Single Barrel was deliciously rich and with great depth......It was nicely balanced too: not too sweet or dry.'
.. Nose: Almost stiffly phenolic: you can cut through the sweet roasty, oaky intensity. Palate: You less taste than eat this stuff... lovely oily middle with plenty of trademark burnt liquorice. Finish: The small grains bravely fight their way through, first rye then malt. But the rye returns with the liquorice for the surprisingly refined finale. Comment: Always an interesting brand.
85 points - whiskymag.comFurther notes... More fruit on this than most Jacks. Still plenty of liquorice and burnt toast. The taste is spicy and immediatly warming. Some real kick to this, with the blows softened by the sweetness of the corn and the surrounding thick oils. Tempus Fugit Liqueur de Violettes (700ml)SWITZERLAND$84. 99Bottle$1019.88 DozenABV: 22%Based on a mid-19th-century French formula and made only in micro-batches by Swiss distiller, Oliver Matter for Tempus Fugit. The recipe employs French violets, traditionally hand-harvested in the sunny and historic Côte d'Azur along the Mediterranean Sea.
Tasting note: Eye catching translucent crimson-pink with pale pink edges. First whiffs detect a gorgeous floral perfume that's ultra pure, fresh, true to style and plain seductive, losing no intensity or focus in later inhalations. Entry is soft, cream-textured; develops to a medium bodied, silky profile with the flower aspect brilliantly defined over the liqueur base. Finish is semi-sweet, momentarily confected. Ends artfully balanced with the subtle floral characteristics delicately lingering. A clinic on how to make a flower infused liqueur. 22% Alc./Vol.

1792 Small Batch Bourbon Whiskey (750ml)Kentucky, UNITED STATES$85. 99Bottle$1031.88 DozenABV: 46.85%The lower proof version of Jim Murray's World Whisky of the Year 2020. 2020 marks the 17th edition of Jim Murray's controversial Whisky Bible. This year Kentucky claims a triple crown: The “World Whisky of the Year” goes to the 1792 Full Proof Kentucky Straight Bourbon from the Barton 1792 distillery, a whiskey Jim Murray describes as “melodious, mysterious and slightly exotic” with a nose of “near-perfect proportions” and with an “unfaltering” finish.
While stocks of the full proof version are currently unavailable, you can taste the second prize in this more affordable lower ABV bottling. Also very highly rated by Murray et al, it's as close as you're likely to get to the World's finest whisk(e)y of 2020. The mash bill is reported to be high rye (15-25%).
The 1792 brand is named in honor of the year Kentucky joined the United States.
Tasting note: Honey gold colour. The initially dry, leathery, nutty/oaky bouquet gives way to sweeter, softer scents of vanilla wafer, popcorn, oak shavings and peppermint chocolate. A cut above your mainstream Bourbon profile: Sleek and effortless with the sugars reigned in. Nice concentration too. At mid palate there’s a noticeable injection of oily rye and cinnamon, being medium dry, crisp, lip smacking rather than caramel or vanilla-heavy. The finish is low-key but deliciously textural, oily, with minty rye, pepper and cocoa. Extra oomph through the final stages would make for an instant classic. As it is, this whiskey displays a degree of elegance and integration that, in its own right, sets it apart in the sub $100 category. A worthwhile addition to every Bourbon lovers collection. 46.85% Alc./Vol.
Other reviews… Now here is a whiskey which appears to have come to terms with its own strengths, and, as with all Bourbons and Malts, limitations. Rarely did whiskey from Barton reach this level of maturity, so harnessing its charms always involves a bit of a learning curve. Each time I taste this it appears a little better than the last… and this is no exception to the rule. Excellent.
1792 Small Batch is Barton’s flagship bourbon. Having undergone naming changes over the years from 1792 Ridgewood Reserve, to 1792 Ridgemont Reserve, and finally to 1792 Small Batch... While still branded as 1792 Ridgemont Reserve, the 8 year age statement found on the back of the bottle was removed in late 2013. 1792 Small Batch isn’t a great bourbon, but it still offers character within its price range where many other bourbons seem to be blending together into an indistinguishable mob. It lacks the depth of its 8 year age stated predecessor, but the comparison is a moot point. Compared to what’s on the shelves right now in the price range, it offers enough of a unique experience to make it worthy of your attention. And its character is both a gift and curse - some will like it enough to make it a staple in their bar while others may downright hate it... If you haven’t given 1792 Small Batch a go yet what are you waiting for? - breakingbourbon.com

It was not until the 17th century that vodka was established as Poland’s national drink. In this period of time, the Polish also started exporting their production to Northern European countries like Russia. By the 18th century, their techniques had advanced resulting in such practices as triple distillation. Today the largest vodka distiller in Poland is Polmos. The company encompasses 25 independent distilleries and holds the domestic market rights with a "no fee" license to produce all of the classic vodka brands. The variety and quality of Vodkas from Polmos now available in Australia has improved substantially over the last ten years. Zytnia [pronounced zhit-NYA] is yet another fine addition to their ever-expanding portfolio. A wonderfully dry vodka, Zytnia is one of the most popular spirits in Poland and Polish expatriate communities. The Chicago-based Beverage Tasting Institute declared Zytnia a "Gold Medal WorldChampion Vodka." International Wine Review magazine commented: Zytnia is "...easily identifiable in blind tastings...one of the most flavorful and interesting vodkas."
100% distilled from rye with a small addition of apple spirit and fruit enhancers, Zytnia has a subtle but pleasant grain character to it. Pale yellow in colour. Medium bodied with a dry palate. Subtle hints of citrus and anise follow through the soft, rich mouthfeel. Well structured, with a lovely dry lingering finish. For those who enjoy their vodka straight.

Petite Champagne is generally considered Cognac's second most prestigious area. About twice the size of Grande Champagne, with around 16,000 hectares under vine, the soil here is still chalky, but it is a more compact and friable type known as Santonian chalk. This slight difference in soils means its cognacs are close in style to Grande Champagne, but without the finesse of the latter. If the two are blended, with at least half the cognac coming from Grande Champagne, the result is permitted to be called "Fine Champagne cognac".

Metaxa starts out like a brandy, with a variety of distillates from white varietals from different parts of Greece. After periods of ageing in French oak casks, the distillates are blended and mixed with a small amount of muscat wine from the Greek Aegean Islands of Samos and Limnos. Finally, Mediterranean herb and floral extracts are added – a secret recipe - apart from rose petals. The brandy's trademark smoothness is primarily derived from the Muscat wines. Tasting note: Deep copper appearance is slightly subdued in the glass. Perfumed opening sniffs offer an amalgam of sweet scents from creme caramel to cocoa and dates. Aeration draws out hints of Turkish Delight then liquorice bullets, the latter partially relieving the sugars. Initially light and semi sweet in the mouth; mid palate shows extra depth offering spicy caramel flavours and hints of dried fruits towards the finish. The single malt that made Kavalan famous. Voted world's Best Whisky in 2015.
In 2014 it was Australia, when Sullivan’s Cove French Oak took the prize.
In 2015 it's the Kavalan Distillery. It's official. Taiwan now offers one of the World's Best Whiskies. We were fortunate enough to have Kavalan's Master Blender; Ian Chang visit us at the store in May, 2015. Tasting the range with Chang revealed a collection of young, precocious malts that demonstrate age isn't everything. Taiwan's tropical climate pushes maturity at a phenomenal rate, but the overall quality has continued to defy the skeptics.
Named for the ancient Yi-Lan county in the northeast , where the venture is located, Kavalan is Taiwan's only distillery at present, but that may soon change.
In a market previously dominated by Cognac, Taiwan is now one of the world's biggest consumers of whisky. Scotch has become an aspirational status symbol and marketers have responded with numerous brands offering special releases exclusively for Taiwan. It’s one explanation behind the country’s changing drinking habits. There are others. Jens Kastner, writing in the Asia Times, notes that, according to industry sources “From the late 1990s on whisky gradually took over, after Scottish whisky makers, among those most prominently The Macallan, started sophisticated promotion campaigns. Face-to-face, small-group brand-training engagement activities were conducted all over the island.”Chang believes there’s also a more mundane factor at play. ”Unlike Cognac, Scotch doesn't taste sweet. So Taiwanese don't think it makes you fat.”
Putting it all together paints an attractive argument for a local industry, especially given Taiwan's proximity to the lucrative Chinese market.
Kavalan is owned by the King Car group, a family company with business in several fields including beverages, food, biotechnology and aquaculture. The brainchild of King Car's chairman, Mr. TT Lee, who always wanted his own high-quality whisky distillery, it was only conceivable after Taiwan joined the WTO in 2002, ending the country's alcohol monopoly system. Mr. Lee is a man who likes to control his own destiny and insists the company will never be floated. The distillery which was completed in 2005 is one hour train ride from Taipei and a 10-15 minute ride out of Yilan proper. It’s an expansive, highly automated barn-like complex with a conference and visitor centre, situated beside the ‘Snowy Mountain’ (which, incidentally has no snow, but there’s an abundant supply of pure spring water here).
The first bottle of Kavalan was released in 2008. Chang who spent two years studying whisky production in Scotland, takes his lead from Dr. Jim Swan, the world's foremost independent consultant on whisky production and maturation.
Like Glenmorangie and other industry benchmarks, his wood policy is obsessive - all the more critical in these climes. The maturation process is 'forced' due to the higher than average tempratures. Everything is accelerated. As whisky writer, Charles MacLean, adds, "You've gotta have the right casks to do the job in such a short time. The expressions I have tasted have clearly demonstrated good wood."
Chang concedes that Kavalan will almost certainly never release anything older than 10 years. If they waited that long, most of the whisky would have evaporated anyway, making it both physically and financially unviable. The quick maturation cycles have spurred a recent counter-campaign from at least one Scotch Whisky producer - namely, Chivas's "Age Matters" campaign. However, Maclean, a long time Scotch whisky evangelist admits, "it doesn't when you have the right spirit in the right casks for the right length of time! Go figure!"The casks, including ex-bourbon refill barrels, fresh sherry butts, and x Port casks as well as Kavalan's own dechar/rechar casks designed to a special recipe to complement the spirit's flavour, are stored in an unconventional five-story maturation warehouse.
Stylistically, Kavalan's whiskies cross a remarkable breadth. Their flavour profiles range from traditional Speyside through to more robust expressions reminiscent of many recent Australian efforts. They have already confounded many critics and a cask strength release breached the mythical 3 digit barrier, rated 100 points by the highly respected ‘Beverage Testing Institute in Chicago. The 2015 World Whisky Award is just one in a steady stream of commendations, proving that nowadays, lengthy maturation is no longer the rule when it comes to great whisky.

[55.3% ABV batch tasted] Deep amber color. Aromas of butter pecan gelato, chocolate raisin, vanilla yogurt, and pound cake with a supple fruity-yet-dry full body and a mango chutney on raisin toast and peppery spices finish. With water, chocolate coconut macaroon and roasted nut notes emerge. A delicious and satisfying sipper.

95 points (Exceptional) - tastings.com...This has a seductive nose of mango, kiwi, dried tropical fruits, rich oak, silky caramels, and milk chocolate-covered cranberries. The dynamics of this cask-strength whisky play out handsomely, with an opening gambit of warm berry fruits, peaking with emphatic spices, and ending with a reflective phase of butter toffee, mocha, and Ovaltine. A dash of water encourages clove-studded orange flavors and preserves the long spicy finish. 92 points- whiskyadvocate.com, reviewed by: Jonny McCormick (Summer 2018)
Previous batch tasted: [56.9% ABV tasted Sept 2015] Deep gold ochre / polished copper colour. Volatile and spiritous opening sniffs / mildly balsamic-like before settling to reveal a medley of dates, dried apricots and brandy cream and trace sulphur. Entry is bittersweet; mid palate is intense, tongue tingling, spicy with the bitterness subsiding to aged brandy-like flavours and Christmas fruit cake. Ends long and rich with vanilla, Christmas cake and dried fruits through the aftertaste. 56.9% Alc./Vol.
First tasted: [57% batch tasted 5.08.2014] Brilliant deep amber colour. Builds through the initially muted stage revealing suggestions of cereals, cocoa and grape. Further air contact fails to stimulate more aromatic excitement. Contrasts on the palate with a stunning explosion of juicy fruit and sweet malt supported by balanced tannins. Finish is bittersweet; the malty, vanilla aftertaste lingers with late fruitiness. Bipolar whisky let down by the nose - otherwise a stand out. 57% Alc./Vol.
