2020 Bodegas y Vinedos Pintia (Vega Sicilia) Toro
    Toro, SPAIN
    $190. 00
    Bottle
    $2280.00 Dozen
    ABV: 15.5%
    Closure: Cork

Bodegas Vega Sicilia is Spain's most prestigious wine estate, and has produced some of the most famous wines in the country's history. Founded in the 1860's and based in Ribera del Duero, two hours from Madrid, initial plantings at the estate included Bordeaux grapes Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Malbec, along with the indigenous Tinto Fino (Tempranillo).

    Other Reviews....
The 2020 Pintia is from a powerful year of concentration, so they were very careful with the harvest date, did a softer vinification trying to extract less and included amphorae and less toast in the élevage. It's opulent and juicy but gentle. The wine reached 15.5% alcohol and has a pH of 3.9 with 4.4 grams of acidity. It fermented in stainless steel and oak vats with indigenous yeasts. It was a very warm and dry vintage in Toro, with a heat wave before the harvest, so they had to rush to pick the grapes; and still, the wine is richer and more powerful, even though the amphorae helped them contain the sensation of ripeness in the wine. It has a heady and ripe profile that's very aromatic and showy, with notes of very ripe berries, prunes and decayed violets, with a faint volatile twist. It matured 70% in new barrels, 10% in used barrels, 10% in stainless steel and 5% in clay pots. It's full-bodied and lush, with abundant, slightly dusty tannins. It's a ripe and powerful vintage for Pintia, but it evolves nicely in the glass, showing less of its ripe side with time, which to me is a good sign. Some 14,304 half bottles, 209,009 bottles, 6,645 magnums and some larger formats were produced. It was bottled in August 2022. Drink 2026-2032.

The 2020 Pintia is Tempranillo from Toro. It opens with fine plum, delicate spice, cherry, barrel notes and a hint of orange peel. A touch of jam adds to the warmth. Rich and intense, the palate is broad and textured with firm tannins. For a Toro, the mouthfeel is unusually smooth, with a core of red fruit. Nicely balanced. Drink 2025-2040.

Another combination of freshness and profoundness from Toro. Blackberries, graphite, ashtray, sandalwood, cocoa powder and dark olives on the nose. Fresh-veined, chalky tannins tighten the palate, with a nervy backbone. The tannins extend to a lengthy finish. Ripe but fresh. Drink from 2026.

Another accomplished vintage of Vega Sicilia's Toro project. Technical director Gonzalo Iturriaga says it was a challenging vintage, with illusive freshness. But ideal harvest timing and maceration management allowed him to deliver a balanced wine, with superbly integrated alcohol. Intense, expressive aromas of dark chocolate, dried black olive, prune and liquorice root mingle with Assam tea (for an elegant smoky allure) and crunchy blueberries. A pleasant rusticity, lined with dried sage, defines the grippy, savoury tannins. Long finish, spicy and earthy. Drink 2025-2040.

A beautifully poised and sophisticated Yarra Valley Chardonnay.

One of Yarra Valley’s most feted modern winemakers, Dave Bicknell emerged out of a hotbed of talent that was De Bortoli around the turn of the millennium and took Oakridge Estate to new heights. Applecross is his own venture which he founded with his viticulturist wife, Nicky Harris.

Brilliant very pale straw colour with green highlighted edges and a watery hue. Gorgeously scented, the intense yet highly finessed nose marries aromatics of white peach, nectarine and pear with dried honey, biscuity nougat, cashew and gentle infusions of gun flint. Rich fleshy white peach, nectarine, pear and dried honey flavours flow across the mid weighted palate with a gently creamed feel. Mealy biscuit, nougat, cashew and infusions of gun flint extend across the back half. Beautifully poised acidity lends some freshness to the long and expansive yet refined finish.
Drink over the next 5-6 years.

From the now defunct Lance's vineyard in St. Andrews, planted in 1984. Whole-bunch pressed to older puncheons. The combination of a cool year and a warm site works beautifully here. A bright green gold. Aromas of perfectly ripened stone fruits meet a little grilled cashew and gentle saline scents in this gorgeous wine. Gently fleshy but with that trademark Bicknell purity of fruit and backbone. Long. Lovely. Drink by 2030.

I’m stunned by the concentration of fruit flavour here. If this wine called me on the telephone I’d be holding the receiver away from my ear – actually that’s not quite accurate because the flavour here is delicious, but you get the idea. The bottle cap should say Warning: Gale Force Flavour. These flavours play in the pear, grapefruit, tinned peach and lime arenas, with (subtle) flint and nougat characters as highlights. There’s pineapple-like acidity in action too, the latter emphasising just how drenched in flavour the acidity itself is, for starters, but also keeping the wine fresh and vigorous. The overall impression: A Class. Drink 2027-2034+

Complex and powerful with a supple flow and long, moreish finish.

This Pinot is a blend from three blocks hand picked on the 1st of March and sorted with 20% whole bunches added to 80% whole berries for fermentation. After two weeks fermenting on skins it was pressed to a mixture of 500 Lt puncheons, 300L Lt hogsheads and 225 Lt barriques where it completed malo and rested on fine lees for 11 months prior to blending and bottling in late February 2025.

Semi translucent bright red core with dark red toned edges and a light red hue. Displaying admirable complexity and intensity, nosing offers up scents of red cherry, violet, strawberry, clove, forest floor, brambly cedar and spice. Delicious red to dark cherry and strawberry fruits are delivered with great power as they supplely flow across the palate. Lending further sophistication across the back half are notions of clove, rhubarb, brambly cedar, forest floor and spicy dried herbs. Fresh with velvety yet structured tannins, it concludes very long and moreish.
Drink over the next 6-8 years.

From the old Lance's vineyard, planted from 1976–1998 (with a selection massale from Mount Mary) and in 2003. 80% whole berry and 20% whole bunch. Bright crimson. Perfumed with wild strawberries, first of the summer cherries, subtle rose bush and spice. The more you swirl the glass, the more fragrant it becomes. On the palate, there is a tender plushness, making it feel quite different to the previous Bicknell FC pinots from the Upper Yarra. Fine tannins and bright acidity round out a beautifully crafted and graceful wine. Drink by 2032.

The 2024 Applecross Pinot Noir is from a massal selection of clonal material planted between 1976 and 1998 at St. Andrews in the Yarra Valley. It was fermented with whole berries/whole bunches, and the élevage was in French oak barrels. This wine, a few months ahead of its market release currently, is so bright and perfumed. Rose, pistachio, graphite/petrichor, dry spice and tapenade coalesce on the palate in a rush. Pure, tightly wound and eminently focused, this is a gorgeous wine. The whole-bunch character rides high in the wine, but far from finding it distracting, I find myself attracted to it. This is super good and comes warmly recommended. 13.4% alcohol, sealed under screw cap. Drink 2025-2039.

    2023 Yeringberg Viognier

    $659.88 Dozen
    ABV: 14%
    Closure: Stelvin

Yeringberg is a historic Yarra Valley estate, first established in 1863 and now under the stewardship of the fifth generation of the de Pury family. Once one of the region’s most celebrated vineyards, production ceased in 1921 before being revived by Guill and Katherine de Pury in 1969. Today, winemaker Sandra de Pury leads the winery, working alongside her brother David who manages the vineyard. With some of the oldest vines in the Yarra Valley, Yeringberg continues to produce elegant, age-worthy wines that reflect both heritage and thoughtful custodianship.

Viognier picked at three ripeness levels over three weeks, crushed and destemmed with several hours' oxidative skin contact, then wild fermented in barrel and matured for 10 months in large-format old oak, without malolactic fermentation. The long, cool 2023 season has delivered a restrained and finely balanced expression of the variety.

    Other Reviews....
Barrel fermented and matured for 10 months in large-format oak. A bright green gold. A little more restrained, perhaps, than the '23 with its complex bouquet of perfectly ripened apricots, yellow apple, quince and acacia honey. The palate is gently opulent, layered and very well balanced, finishing focused and long. A delicious and heady white wine to enjoy over the next three or so years. Drink 2025-2028.

Floral and lifted aromas of fresh apricots, lavender, fresh flowers, baking spices and pastry. The palate is medium-bodied with a generous texture and vivid acidity. A phenolic grip brings layers of complexity. Such a lovely Northern Rhone-style viognier. Drink or hold.

Chardonnay is fully destemmed and crushed, with 50% wild fermentation, 30% new hogsheads, 30% malolactic fermentation and 11 months' maturation in barrel with some winter batonnage. The third consecutive cool vintage, 2023 emphasised purity, detail and structural restraint.

A combination of natural and inoculated ferments, then racked to hogsheads (30% new) and with 30% mlf. A bright green gold. Expressive, with a tangerine, lemon peel and almond-scented bouquet. A little chalkier and more restrained on the palate than the '22, this very nicely balanced and structured wine should age gracefully over the next five to seven years at least. Drink 2025-2032.

The 2023 reflects the freshness of the season, expressed through a fine-boned and savoury house style.

    Other Reviews....
A blend of 61/39% marsanne/roussanne from vines planted between '73 and '85. Unusually both varieties were picked on the same day, before being fermented and matured together. A deep-ish, bright green gold. Complex with aromas of pear, white nectarine, candied ginger and light floral scents. A little more restrained than the '22, this always gently textured wine finishes citrus pithy, chalky and long. Lovely. Drink 2025-2031.

From low-yielding, dry-grown Pinot Noir vines planted between 1969 and 1974, fermented fully destemmed with nine days on skins, then matured for 19 months in barrel with 38% new oak. The combination of old vines, low yields and extended elevage defines the style and structure of the 2023 release.

    Other Reviews....
Made from MV6 and an old clone from Great Western planted between ’69 and ’74. Fully destemmed and 38% new oak. A bright ruby red. Old vines, low yields and a cool year have produced another terrific Yeringberg pinot. Gently meaty with aromas of black cherry, blueberry, brown spices and lightly crushed violets. Concentrated, structured and long, this kept opening up with air, meaning that, while it can be approached now, you really want to have a bottle or three when it begins to hit its peak over the next five to 10 years plus. Drink 2026-2036.

A blend of 61/13/12/8/6% cabernet sauvignon/merlot/cabernet franc/malbec/petit verdot from vines planted at this historic site from 1969–2000. A bright crimson purple. A wonderfully complex and perfumed bouquet redolent of blackcurrants and wild blackberry together with new pencil box shavings, sweet spice and crushed violets. Medium bodied, in the best sense of the term, with the fruit, oak and seamless tannins coming together as one. It may not be the most long-lived Yeringberg ever, but it will provide an enormous amount of enjoyment over the next 10–15 years. Drink 2025-2040.

After visiting the Alsace region in the late 1990’s where Riesling and Pinot Gris grow side by side, it seemed logical to Tim Adams that if Clare Valley had the conditions to produce world class Rieslings, it could also make quality Pinot Gris. The first vines were subsequently planted in the Tim Adams Ladera vineyard and today their Pinot Gris is one of the country's most popular.

Brilliant pear skin tinged colour with a watery hue. Showing intense aromatics, the nose is filled with pear, red apple skin, quince and rose water scents. Rich, exceptionally concentrated and voluptuous, this is quintessential Barossa Shiraz.

Teusner’s Bilmore Shiraz is sourced from vineyards along the western ridge of the valley floor, an area stretching south of Seppeltsfield Road, around the back of the golf club at Rowland Flat and then on through the parish of Gomersal that overlooks the southern township of Lyndoch. Shiraz grown in these parts produces richly flavoured wines with soft and round textures that are dangerously drinkable. For the Bilmore Shiraz Kym Teusner puts the emphasis on Barossa’s trademark luxurious fruit using only older, seasoned barrels to mature the wine for a period of around 12 months.
Impenetrable inky black heart with a near equally deep dark red black hue. Wafting from the glass are heady aromatics of liquorice, dark plum and black cherry followed by vanillin oak, earthy mocha and spice notes. Rich, exceptionally concentrated and voluptuous, plush dark plum, blackberry and liquorice fruits caress the full bodied palate. Lurking underneath are vanillin oak, mocha, subtle earth and spice elements. Boasting magnificent power it has silky smooth tannins and a long decadent finish.

While it rightly reveals the openness of the warm vintage with its flavour profile, this remains a stylish wine underscored by lovely acidity and some funky detail. White peach, grapefruit and preserved lemon with an oyster shell briny note and grilled nuts, so there’s a savoury element, too. Tasting note...
Pale gold. Subtle, soft, sweet orange rind and biscuit notes are overpowered by vanilla and cocoa. Very clean. Medium weight, semi-sweet cereal and biscuit flavours are accompanied by a pleasant spiciness. Vibrant and youthful. Biscuit and toasty cereals repeat on the moderate aftertaste. Uncomplicated everyday drinking. 40% Alc./Vol.

First tasted 31/10/2005... A straight forward whisky that has nonetheless retained its characteristic smoothness that first won it the following of so many. The simplicity of the nose is repeated on the palate with dried fruits and a suggestion of peat. Extremely soft mouthfeel with a faint smokey finish.

Other reviews... The world’s best-selling single malt. Isn’t that sufficient to give this dram some respect? It might be me, but it strikes me that ’Fiddich has more heft to it these days, with a sherried element giving the pear, apple, and light cereal of the distillery character a sweet, plump, sultana underpinning. This then adds chewiness to the palate, balancing the dry nuttiness and receding on the finish where those green fruits come through to add fresh acidity. Great balance. 86 points - whiskyadvocate.com, reviewed by: Dave Broom (Summer 2013)

Reputedly founded with almost no capital and only second hand equipment bought from the Cardhu distillery, distillation at Glenfiddich began on Christmas day in 1887. It now boasts twenty-eight stills and is the largest selling single malt in the world and remains the only Highland Malt whisky to be matured and bottled at its own distillery in Dufftown, Banffshire, Scotland.

William Grant, the founder of Glenfiddich was the man behind the success of the brand. However, it was only in 1963 when Glenfiddich was accepted into the blend-dominated English market in 1963, that Glenfiddich re-introduced Single Malts to the world. Glenfiddich was marketed as a 'traditional' Scotch whose taste expressed its origins, much like a great wine expresses its 'terroir'.

Rich succulent blue to dark fruits with a lush, velvety feel and long savoury finish.

Dune is a project of brothers Duncan and Peter Lloyd (next generation Coriole) using fruit sourced from their vineyard in the Blewitt Springs sub-region of McLaren Vale. The Empty Quarter blend is composed of Shiraz, Mataro, Grenache, Touriga Nacional and Cinsault. The varieties are picked together and fermented in open top concrete fermenters for around 10 days on skins. The wine is then pressed off into seasoned oak for approximately 12 months before bottling.

Attractive dark raspberry, liquorice, dark plum and blueberry scents leap out of the glass followed by some scorched earth and peppered dried herb notes. In this case, Riggs has journeyed to McLaren Vale to source the Grenache from a very good year. It’s once again that modern style, so it’s lighter in the medium-bodied zone, but there is no lack of fruit intensity and flavour. The nose displays all those floral, raspberry, rose petal notes that you might expect, while the palate has a subtle, savoury rusticness running through it, contributing to a slightly grainy texture, but loads of deeply intense bright red fruits, and a slightly crunchy watermelon cranberry feel that I found most appealing. Drink 2025-2031.

The fruit here is sweet but the length, mouthfeel and overall impression is delicious plus plus. This is a lovely wine to drink. It tastes of raspberry, potpourri, peppercorns and sweet, roasted spices, and both the overall flow and the finesse of the tannin are spot on. McLaren Vale grenache, once again, for the win. Drink 2026-2029.

Poached strawberry, orange and rhubarb, redcurrant gelee, cranberry sauce, dark rose petals. This is lightly coloured, vibrant and forward, with some complexing spices – white pepper, cardamom, mace. The palate flows in the same vein, with some upfront fruitful appeal that is marshalled down a savoury line, and in an orderly, considered way. Drink by 2028.

This is no Peppermint Pattie but it comes close, bringing a now-distinctive LWSTL peppery elegance to the glass. Wild ferments can be unpredictable, but this is a mighty strong follow-up to 2020 with a similar high level of intensity: black pepper, acacia, five-spice, licorice, black fruits and spice rolling long, clean and bright across the tongue. Tannins, supple and well-crafted, sit back in readiness for time in bottle – it can easily take 10 years – and they are girded for the journey. Drink by 2032.

I cut my teeth drinking this stuff with my dodgy mates at Milk Beach in Sydney. A blend of grenache, shiraz, cabernet sauvignon and riesling, it's a little dark in colour (think watered-down Ribena) and carries a little more oomph in the aromas and flavours, but that is sometimes what life dictates, and it's a cold stone classic. Raspberry, red cherry and red plum fruits, spice, pressed flowers and stone. With just a swell of texture and treading the ridgeline of off-dry, it's pretty darn delicious.

Domaine de la Grange des Peres is everything a ‘cult’ wine should be. Tiny but meticulous production, a superbly talented winemaker, wonderful terroir, and customers across the globe desperate to get their hands on a bottle. Laurent Vaillé had been a physiotherapist by trade, but he quit his job in the early 1980s to pursue a career in winemaking. After studying viticulture and oenology, Laurent worked at numerous prestigious domaines (including JF Coche-Dury, JL Chave and Domaine de Trevallon) before returning to his family home near Aniane where he planted the land to Syrah, Mourvedre, and uncommon for the region, Cabernet Sauvignon. The decision on the latter meant foregoing the local appellation (AOP Coteaux du Languedoc), instead making Vins de Pays de l’Hérault.

The Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon vines are situated in a Northerly aspect on limestone soil at 300 metres altitude, whilst the Mourvèdre faces due South on pierres roulées, like in Chateauneuf du Pape. Yields are kept down to a minimal 25 hl/ha thanks to bunch thinning and manual sorting of the grapes. Laurent uses “reasoned” viticultural practices, keeping the use of chemicals to a bare minimum, cultivating the soil, removing leaves to let the generous sunlight into the canopy and performing a green harvest where necessary. Winemaking is traditional in style; each variety being vinified separately using natural yeasts and long maceration. The wines spend up to 24 months in barrel, one third new, but the oak is seamlessly integrated even upon release.

One of Australia's most impressive rosé, Farr Rising produce their dry and complex example from Pinot Noir. The freshly picked grapes are left to macerate in tank for two to three hours before bleeding the free run juice to be used for this rosé. Natural fermentation then occurs in four to five year old barrels before maturing for 10 months.

Cherry, strawberry, almond, roses and hibiscus, a little spice and orange peel, and a slight lift. It’s juicy and red fruited, maybe something of a peach tea thing here, an almond creaminess to it, a light blood orange tang, fine powdery texture, with a savoury yet fleshy finish of excellent length. It’s a bolder style in a way, but has complexity and character to burn. Delightful. A rosé made with intent. A toss up between 94 and 95 points. Drink 2025-2029+.

Here’s a wine that expresses all that we love about this region which has produced consistently some of the finest Rieslings we make in this country. From a warm and dry vintage when the balance of ripe flavour and natural grape acidity was a critical decision point come harvest. This has got it bang on with a delicate feel – aromas in a familiar yellow and green citrus fruit and blossom mode, the palate more towards lime flesh with on the mark, get set tanginess supportive rather than dominating, offering a fine pith finishing texture. The fruit here hails from forty year old vines, while the wine spent a year and a half maturing in French oak. 2021 is a cracking vintage for the region. Dark magenta in colour, there is real concentration here, with notes of mocha, coffee beans, chocolate, plums and black fruits – a classic and compelling Barossa Shiraz. The wine has richness and depth, and is surely one of the better wines I have seen from these guys. It is dense but dancing and it is impossible not to love the rich plushness. Nicely fleshed yet elegant and fresh in it’s feel, the palate features nectarine, white peach and citrus fruits over a delicate back drop of biscuity nougat and gun flint. Brisk acidity with a finish that’s both refined and focused.

Light straw with cream-flecked white peach, nectarine and citrus fruits undercut with hints of white flowers, nougat and crème fraîche. A distant suggestion of struck flint, vanillin oak, almond paste, oatmeal and soft spice. Lightly textural on the palate with a touch of sour cream richness, a fine, lacy minerality and some really lovely focus as the wine trails off. Drink by 2032.

Light straw with a flash of green and aromas of juicy nectarine, fleshy peach and lemon. Hints of clotted cream, nougat, white flowers, stone, vanillin oak, soft spice and almond paste. I like the crunch that the fruit has on the palate, snappy, saline twang and the light crème fraîche tones that follow. The wine slowly retreats – dry, savoury and nicely focused. Drink by 2032.

It’s a rare achievement in this industry for a wine to maintain its price point for more than 20 years without sacrificing quality, even more so when it's priced under $10. But the Three Brothers Reunited Shiraz has done just that. Most new labels (particularly in the sub $20 category) start with a bang and over deliver in the first couple of vintages in an attempt to win new customer's loyalty. However, in follow up releases they often stretch expectations of quality in order to meet increased demand. Gradually the brand fades away as customers are disillusioned with what's become a lesser wine. Three Brothers, on the other hand, has made quality and consistency its number one priority, only gradually increasing production while growing a very loyal customer base that's made this our top selling red for over 20 years.

Juicy and silky textured this is a terrific, everyday drinking Shiraz for just $10.

Deep dark red black tinged colour with a dark red hue. Sailing out of the glass with impressive intensity are aromas of dark cherry, liquorice and dark plum which are interwoven with some scorched earth, vanillin spice and peppered dried herb notes. A touch lighter in weight than the 2019 vintage, the medium bodied palate is layered with rich, juicy dark plum, dark cherry and liquorice fruits which carry a silky flow. Subtle dried herb, scorched earth and pepper elements are threaded through the back half. Slightly grainy yet polished tannins with an amply fruited, pepper laced finish.
