Mezcal's bubble shows no sign of bursting. As demand increases, so does the call for an entry-level option. Enter Union Uno: The brand has been hugely popular in the US and Mexico where it's garnered a reputation as the affordable, quality, go-to choice for mixing. You might be sceptical, as most attempts to hit a lower price-point in this category have come at the expense of both flavour and the equality of those who craft it. Taking a people-first approach to their treasured local drink, the young founders behind Mezcal Union set out to change all that. Even though Pedro Hernandez is the Master Mezcalero, each bottle is produced by a group of local families - hence the brand's name. To date, the Union has brought together more than 50 families across 20 palenques, offering them all a fair-trade business model and a path to social and economic development.
Union's Joven expression is produced in San Baltazar Guelavila using farm-grown Espadin and wild Cirial magueys roasted for four days. Resulting in a combination of earthy, herbal and citrus notes, Uno starts out with soft layers of sweet citrus and panna cotta before moving toward archetypal Espadín notes of roasted tropical fruit combined with a little salinity and a hint of pepper. The level of smokiness is spot-on, confidently present without overwhelming. There's also an edge of citrus peel and a twist of green herbs in the mix- echoes of the wild Cirial. Perfectly primed for mixing, it's a great, well-priced Mezcal to have in the drinks cabinet.

...Made from agave espadin and cirial, plants ranging from 8 to 14 years old. Quite smeet and classically smoky on the nose, heavy with citrus notes. The palate offers few surprises, with notes of smoky barbecue sauce, black pepper, and smoked beef notes. There’s an edge of citrus peel and a tough of green herbs in the mix. The finish is fairly short, finding lingering smoke and a slight saline character. Soft and easygoing, it’s a wholly approachable mezcal, though not one heavy with complexity. B+ - drinkhacker.com
...Excellent value for the price point. This mezcal is commonly used in bars for mixing. It has a good smokey, medicinal, vanilla and sweet flavor to it. It’s not as complex as other top shelf mezcals, but it’s pretty good. This would make an excellent entry level Mezcal for those who want to differentiate from tequila. I tried this in a bar margarita and thought it was really good and expected it to be more expensive. Overall I’m impressed and I plan on keeping a bottle around for mixing. - mezcalreviews.com

'Tailored' is the long-awaited replacement for the stellar but now discontinued Nikka 12 year old. Released in 2019 with a similar presentation, the age statement is gone, but reports suggest the quality is not far off - plus you get it for considerably less. Judging by the taste, some have said they'd be surprised if the average age is much less than 12 years. The likely reason for dropping the age statement is that it gives Nikka more flexibility to focus on maintaining a steady profile and consistent availability. Like its predecessor, the aim of Tailored is to create a malt-heavy assemblage that honours all that's great about Japanese blends, deftly balancing pot still whiskies from Miyagikyo (light & elegant) and Yoichi (peaty and more robust) with a judicious splash of Nikka's award winning sweet Coffey grain. Nikka note on their website that this doesn't qualify as a 100% Japanese whisky, so it's almost guaranteed there's some Ben Nevis in the mix too - no bad thing. The malts were aged in Sherry barrels and finally bottled at 43% for a little extra depth. If you've enjoyed premium blends like Hibiki Master's Select, try this on a whim and you won't be disappointed. At the very least, the sculpted decanter with its huge wooden stopper is going to premiumnise your bar shelf.

On the finish there’s some cinnamon and other baking spices, hints of strawberries, and more chocolate. Medium-bodied, elegant and yet so, so intense, it has layers of bright crunchy fruit and mineral sparks galore, framed by exquisitely ripe, finely pixelated tannins, finishing very long and energetic. The 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon is stunning, just as it was last year. A dark, ample, brooding Cabernet, the 2018 offers up the essence of black cherry, plum, mocha, spice, graphite, leather and incense. The 2018 has shut down considerably since I tasted it last year. That won't be a problem in a few years' time, but today the 2018 is decidedly brooding. Even so, it shows tremendous finesse and tons of pure breed. It is without question one of the epic, present-day wines for the estate. Drink 2026 - 2048.

One of the wines of the vintage, as well as a legendary Napa Cabernet that will compete with anything out there, the 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate reveals a deep purple hue as well as extraordinary notes of pure crème de cassis and blackberry-scented fruits intermixed with lots tobacco leaf, lead pencil, spice, and hints of flowers. Reminding me of the 2016 with its purity as well as its balance, it hits the palate with full-bodied richness, a layered, seamless texture, and a blockbuster of a finish. Based on 86% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9% Cabernet Franc, and 5% Petit Verdot, this is a wine you don’t want to miss! It’s going to take 7-8 years to hit its early drinking plateau and cruise for 30-40 years in cold cellars. Drink 2028 - 2068.

The domaine of Francois Cotat is a tiny 4 hectares, and has been making some of the most exceptional wines of the Loire since 1947. Their success and individuality can be attributed to François' intense passion for creating the finest wine possible and his exceptionally placed vineyards. Prudent viticulture combined with densely planted vines, ultra-low yields and relatively late harvesting produces fantastically flavoursome fruit. Whilst not Biodynamic, Francois uses organic fertilisers and racks according to the phases of the moon. His incredible wines develop with age and, in the best vintages, can be cellared for more than 30 years.
Named after François father, Cuvée Paul is an incredibly rare wine often made from La Grande Côte and set aside as having the greatest potential for ageing. It is not made every year. A hark back to how Chavignol was made in the 40's and 50's it is made from very ripe grapes and shows gentle sweetness and incredible power.

Based in the tiny hamlet of Polisot in the southern Cote des Bars region of Champagne, Dominique Moreau is producing some of the most dynamic and striking wines of the area. Naming her estate after her grandmother, Marie Courtin, Dominique has set out to craft Champagnes which emphasise how her specific terroir can be expressed in a given vintage. Her wines then are single vineyard and single vintage, made with meticulously grown fruit from biodynamically-grown grapes, see no dosage, and sulfur is used sparingly or not at all.
Along with her stunning Champagnes, Dominique has started making tiny quantities of Coteaux Champenois still wine. le Blanc du Tremble is 100% Pinot Noir from 40 year old vines that was direct pressed before being vinified in one clay and one sandstone amphora. Bottling occurred with no fining, filtration, or sulphur addition.

Rye is a whiskey perhaps best known as the backbone of cocktails like the Manhattan, Sazerac and Old-Fashioned, however the last few decades has seen it re-gain traditional ground over bourbon and Tennessee whiskey as a standalone spirit. Among the more fanatical of the recent protagonists are the team behind Whistle Pig. First released in the summer of 2010 to great critical acclaim, their rye received 96 points from Wine Enthusiast, the highest rating ever for a rye whiskey, as well as a “highest recommendation” from Spirits Journal, plus accolades from The Wall Street Journal, GQ, Forbes, Maxim, Imbibe Magazine, and many others. For Australian rye whiskey enthusiasts, it became one the most awaited releases of the year.
The key figure behind production is David Pickerell. Fourteen years Master Distiller for Maker’s Mark in Loretto, Kentucky, a luminary of whiskey knowledge and one of the nation’s pre-eminent distillers, he arrived at Whistle Pig with a simple objective: To create the world's finest rye.
"You cannot get more flavour in whiskey than you can with rye", enthuses Pickerell.
"The bad news? From a business standpoint, it takes longer to age rye whiskey. Rye is stubborn and robust. It has spicy character, and a dark, rich flavour. To attain its signature smoothness, rye must be aged (a minimum of 9 years is ideal). Rye isn’t sweet. In fact, it contains less sugar than any other grain. The challenges involved in producing rye whiskey are many. But when handled properly, there is no comparison."
Pickerell illustrates the difference between rye and bourbon in food terms. "Think of the sweet flavour of a fluorescent yellow cornbread that you nosh with BBQ", he explains. "Now imagine the earthy, spicy, powerfully brooding flavour of rye bread or pumpernickel used at a gourmet sandwich shop".
These differences that express themselves in bread also come across through the distillation process. We tend to agree. Pure, aged rye tends to be more flavourful and complex than almost any corn-based whiskey.
Rye is also conducive to sustainable agriculture. It grows densely enough to exclude weeds, keeping the need for herbicides to a minimum, and it's an excellent scavenger of soil-bound nitrogen, rendering heavy fertilisation unnecessary.
Up until recently, Whistle Pig's rye was been distilled and matured in Western Canada (reputedly sourced from the Alberta Premium distillery), then bottled in Vermont, making them a ‘non-distiller producer’ or NDP like Willett, Jefferson's or Angel's Envy. In the summer of 2014, after a three year legal process, the company finally obtained a permit to construct a farm-style distillery, with all the rye grown on site. They continue to use new American Oak or early use bourbon barrels for all their maturation.
Retasted September 2020... Opens with orange zest developing aromas of oily rye, cumin, peppermint and anise ending with grainstore, new leather, vanilla and chocolate box. A full and oily attack; muddled mint and herbal tones combine with chewy grains; white pepper builds through the finish. Leaves you with peaches and cream. Oily, delicious, vibrant and long. Delivers the mouthfeel of a single malt while maintaining the distinctive qualities of rye. 50% Alc./Vol.
First tasted February 2015 [20ml sample] Bright gold. Somewhat muted with vanilla accents... more definitive aromas of rye bread and cigar box follow. Relatively sweet and sedate; juicy rye is beautifully harmonised with the oak. Love the texture. Fabulous balance. Cedar and cigar box, then hints of peppermint through the aftertaste. 93 points

...First, a warning: this is only for those who like their rye big and brawny. It starts off innocuously with a maple-syrup color, and a pretty, complex and subtle scent: honey, vanilla, a sight medicinal tinge and faint clover notes. It feels silky on the tongue and at first, the flavors reflect caramel, burnt orange and a whisper of smoke, but then a mouth-warming wave of tannic bite sweeps over all and lingers for a good long time. Very ripe, but also very fresh red-cherry nose. Bold and generous, as you expect from Pommard, but with gentle tannins on the medium-to full-bodied palate. Only at the finish do they show a hint of the dryness for which the appellation is renowned, but the texture remains wonderfully velvety.

The 2019 Pommard En Mareau is very promising, wafting from the glass with notes of red berries, plums, dried herbs, spices and raw cocoa. Medium to full-bodied, bright and supple, with melting tannins and a lively core of fruit, much like Audoin's Fixin, this is a cuvée that has been more and more elegantly rendered in recent vintages.

This too is quite good for its level and worth checking out. Drink 2026+.

Brilliant very pale straw colour with a faint greenish tinge around the outskirts and a watery hue. Lifted white peach, nectarine, citrus and dried honey scents are trailed by hints of biscuity nougat and flinty minerals. Concentrated ripe pear, white peach and nectarine fruits are underpinned by zesty, mineral infused acidity. Since our initial tasting, nearly two years ago, the palate has filled out and put on a bit more weight yet still remains lively and energetic. Subtle biscuit, crème brulee and infusions of gun flint linger through the back half. Understated in its power with a faint cream tinged yet highly invigorating feel, it finishes long and elegant.

Original tasting January 2022: Brilliant very pale straw colour with a subtle glimmer of green around the edges and a watery hue. Captivating scents of white peach, pear, lime and dried honey drift through the olfactory senses with biscuity oak, citrusy nougat and spice notes ensuing. Brimming with freshness, delightful white peach, nectarine and lime fruits are glowing with energy. Subtle honeyed citrus, light biscuity oak and flinty mineral characters are also present. Vibrant, mineral infused acidity lends plenty of zip and focus to the finish.

A blend of 30% Pinot Noir from the Montagne de Reims and the Grande Vallée de la Marne, 30% Chardonnay sourced from some of the best Crus in the Champagne and 40% Pinot Meunier from the Vallée de la Marne and the southern slopes of Epernay. Vinification takes place in stainless steel tanks with 50% to 60% of the blend made up of reserve wines. Aged on lees for 48 months with no sugar added to the dosage.
An exuberant mousse holds well over a pale straw, pale gold tinged base that’s threaded by an ultra fine and very persistent bead. Heady baked bread and yeast lees aromas fill the nostrils with hints of citrus and pear fruits also present. Subtle oily toast and roasted almond like notes ensue. Racy yeasty baked bread and citrus flavours are both sculptured and tense. Oily toast like characters, chalky oyster shell and roasted almond characters fill out on the back half. Finishes very dry and crisp with a chiselled feel to the long aftertaste.
Drink over the next 3-4 years.

The base was 2015, but in total it contains 10 harvests. It was bottled at the beginning of 2016 and disgorged in March 2020. Four years on lees. Fantastic release. Drink or hold.

Described as "the crowning glory of the Grand Series", and one of the most prized Glenfiddich limited editions in recent memory. Also visually stunning. This will go fast.
Glenfiddich continues to make waves in the super premium category, most notably with the 'Grand Series' (past bottlings include Grand Cu and Gran Reserva). The newest in the line up is also one of the most limited. Aged 26 years in American and European oak and finished in Cognac casks, from its conception to its packaging 'Grande Couronne' is created with opulence in mind at every step. Meaning 'Great Crown' in French, the title is a nod not only to the noble character of the liquid, but also to the fact that it was finished in Cognac casks for its final two years. Glenfiddich Malt Master Brian Kinsman adds "The Grand Series perfectly encapsulates Glenfiddich’s spirit of innovation and our ability to experiment with aged liquid and intriguing finishes. Grande Couronne is the latest to exemplify that approach. It is the only Glenfiddich single malt that has matured in American and European oak casks and finished in rare French Cognac casks. The length of the finish, two years, is highly unusual and adds extra layers of sweet, toasted oak and velvety aromas of café crème, brown sugar and soft spice."

Notes from Glenfiddich... NOSE - Vibrant and lively with an abundance of toasty oak sweetness. Reminiscent of a French pâtisserie, freshly-baked Tarte Tatin and buttery choux pastry. TASTE- Grande Couronne 26 year old is an incredibly opulent dram, rich and regal with sweet warm flavour notes, such as café crème, brown sugar and spice. A delicate French patisserie in the glass. 43.8% Alc./Vol.

The nose is soft and fragrant, with vanilla, red berries, toffee, and ultimately, damsons. Viscous on the palate, with blackcurrants, plums, port wine, and cinnamon. Cuvee Liesse d'Harbonville represents the flagship Champagne of the Ployez-Jacquemart range. Only produced in exceptional vintages, the composition is 65% Chardonnay (Cuis-Bisseuil-Ludes 1er Crus), 20% Pinot Noir (Mailly Champagne Grand Cru), and 15% Pinot Meunier (Ludes old vineyard 1er Cru). Following a strict selection at harvest, primary fermentation occurs in 2-3 year old barrels before being put to bottle 7-8 months after the harvest to age at least 10 years in the cellar before disgorgement. As with all wines of Ployez-Jacquemart dosage is very low at approximately 3 grams per litre.

Finishes dry with stimulating acidity and a long, richly textured aftertaste.

As of 2019, Balblair have abandoned their vintage dated bottlings, instead offering a range of age statements, all at a 46% minimum with zero chill filtering or colouring. The house style aims to maximise the esters at the start of the cut giving core characteristics of apricots, oranges, spices, floral notes and green apples. The heavier oils and lipids at the end of the cut are also captured, giving leathery, nutty and full-bodied characteristics. Initially matured in American oak ex-bourbon casks, then refined over the years in Spanish oak for extra richness and complexity, the handsome new-look 25 year old promises a full-bodied malt with oily citrus, chocolate praline and a faint note of fresh tobacco leaf.

The palate is much cleaner than the nose putting on a full show of rich chewy black fruits. Black cherry and liquorice infused with graphite overlay scorched earth, dried meats, dried herbs and blackpepper. Muscular tannin structure with a long firmly built aftertaste.

This is a single parcel that has been made with 20% whole bunches and has a pure red plum and spiced fruit bread nose with hints of sarsaparilla, dark nuts, black fruits and iodine. Really complex. Intensely concentrated palate with ripe dark plum and panforte flavors. The tannins are subtly spiced and athletic, sturdy but pliable and hold the finish long. Striking wine. So polished and deep. Drink over the next decade. Screw cap.

Highland Park had a 15 year old on the market over a decade ago, bottled at 43%. The age statement is being revived in this re-packaged version composed of a ‘high percentage’ of first-fill European oak sherry-seasoned casks. Complimenting this are first-fill American oak sherry casks, adding flavours of vanilla and crème brûlée. Meanwhile, a small proportion of refill casks give ‘gentle’ heather peat and ‘lightly fruity’ character. Perhaps what's most striking is the vessel itself. The whisky has been filled into heavily embossed 'ceramic' style bottles, made in partnership with UK-based Wade Ceramics. The design was inspired by ancient earthenware vessels, which would have been used to store whisky a century or two ago at the distillery. The new 15 year old is set to become a permanent edition to the core range. 44% Alc./Vol.

A buoyant and fluffy mousse holds well over a pale straw coloured base that has flecks of gold around the edges. A very fine bead showing good persistence. Excellent aromatics with baked bread, citrus and yeast lees leading the way. Subtle toast and almond notes ensue. Well meshed flavours of yeast lees, baked bread and citrus overlay an oily toast and almond back drop. Airy feel with good tension, crisp acidity and a refreshingly savoury aftertaste.

Light straw-gold colour. Rich nose of bruised pears, honey and butter on toast. A full style, quite weighty with its rich golden fruits and toasty lees development all on show. Great length; there’s ample acidity to keep it driving while the fine mousse ensures both creaminess in texture along with refreshing lift to the dry finish. Filled on the 22nd August 2011 and bottled on the 28th of July 2020 exclusively for Ardbeg embassies around the world, cask #2323 is also reported to be one of the last to be signed by Distillery Manager, Mickey Heads before retiring. The new Manager, Colin Gordon is set to take over the helm and drive the company forward to even greater success. Notes from the producers... Nose – Deep, pungent and salty, with medicinal notes, dark chocolate, brambly fruit and the tiniest hint of vanilla. A splash of water brings out a flinty minerality, along with pungent floral notes like narcissus or lilies. As the bouquet continues to open up, the classic, smoky Ardbeg character starts to build. Palate – The mouthfeel is full and rounded. The primary flavour is bold and svaoury, with deep peat smoke, a curious rubbery note, and the suggestion of smoked cocoa powder. There is a soft oiliness throughout, with crunchy oak tannins and a touch of clove and nutmeg. The aftertaste lingers with salted peanuts, dark chocolate cream and a touch of coal tar. Clemens and Rita Busch are one of the pioneering organic, and now biodynamic, producers working in Germany. As the fifth generation winemaker at this estate, Clemens stopped using herbicides in 1976, then in 1984 he and wife Rita converted to organics. They were among the first in Germany to commit to organic viticulture and led the movement establishing an association of organic growers in 1986. The estate converted to biodynamics entirely in 2005, earning certifications from the EU and Respekt-Biodyn.
Based in Pünderich, almost all of the vines they work are on the slopes of the Marienburg, and unique for the Mosel, feature parcels planted on the three main colours of slate; blue, red, and grey. In the winery Clemens works with wild yeasts, and ferments mostly in very old 1000-litre barrels. Nothing is added to the wines at any stage, apart from a touch of sulphur at bottling. Most of the wines at the Busch estate are vinified dry, and they are rich, complex and often powerful. They age very beautifully, gaining in complexity and texture. However, the sweet and noble sweet wines from the estate are also impressive, ranking among the finest wines made anywhere on the Mosel.

Domaine Belargus is the realisation of a dream by former Parisian investor Ivan Massonnat. While it was his love and respect for Burgundy that ignited his passion for wine, his family connection to Chinon opened his eyes to the potential of Chenin Blanc from the great terroirs of the Loire Valley. A chance encounter with retiring vigneron Jo Pithon lead the pair to meet at the foot of the legendary Coteau des Treilles vineyard one frosty morning, and the fate of each was sealed. This new estate is 100% dedicated to Chenin Blanc and celebrates the grape's versatility regarding terroirs and wine style. Ivan has installed a young team, and together they are currently converting to biodynamics, with a single-plot approach inspired by Ivan's first love: Burgundy.
Adapting their approach each vintage, the various plots are harvested at their optimum maturity at incredibly low yields of around 25 hectolitres per hectare. Fermentation occurs in barrel using indigenous yeasts, and can last from less than a month to more than a year, depending on each plot and the vintage characteristics. This is one of the most exciting new ventures in France today, and should appease lovers of high quality, terroir specific wines.
Located at the bottom of La Roche-aux-Moines, the “Clos des Ruchères” (Monopole) rests on a slope of purple schists, covered with a very thin layer of soil of only twenty centimetres. This tiny steep plot, worked like a garden, gives birth to a wine carried by a great mineral tension. Two years of maturation give it length and aromatic complexity, as well as a significant aging potential.

Located at the bottom of La Roche-aux-Moines, the steep, southwest-facing 0.4-hectare Clos des Ruchères monopole rests on a slope of purple schists, covered with a very thin layer of soil of only 20 centimeters. Aged two years on the lees, the 2018 Savennières Clos des Ruchères has a golden-yellow color and opens with an intense but also quite developed nose of ripe and stewed yellow fruits, whereas the crystalline, flinty schist notes remain in the background. Round, highly elegant and refined on the fruit-intense and aromatic palate, this is a crystalline, linear but also juicy and well-concentrated Ruchères with great mineral tension but most of all finesse. The finish is much fresher and purer than expected from the nose and very long and intense. Given the elegant and sustainable finish, the 2018 should have significant aging potential. Clos des Ruchères is a tiny plot, facing south-west. Chenin Blanc planted in 2008, and a terroir of loam and clay on purple schist. A nose of hazelnut, almond and perfectly integrated oak. After some swirling, the bouquet develops with aromas of spices, flowers and flint. Superb mouthfeel with a texture that is both fine-grained and fleshy. This wine has remarkable freshness, also some salinity while also leaving a slight sensation of tannins. A Savennières of crystalline clarity. Drinking Window 2025 - 2040.

Yohan Castaing - Decanter
Still in élevage, this cuvée is sourced from a tiny 0.4-hectare vineyard on degraded purple schist and clay. The total crop amounts to just three barrels, and this is a sample from one barrel rather than a blending, so not entirely representative. Compared to Gaudrets the nose offers a huge step up in character, showing a very pure schistose style, much more focused, and dressed with a fragrant floral minerality. This is very fine, but the palate is heavily marked by vanillin oak at the moment, all wrapped up in threads of stone and schist, along with very fresh acidity. Really focused, with a very fine-boned style, swirled with liquorice, vanilla and fennel from the oak. It is difficult to judge on this sample taken from one obviously new barrel. Nevertheless it feels evidently superior to Gaudrets.

Amrut's new umbrella brand, ‘Single Malts of India’, sails into the unchartered waters of local independent bottlings to showcase some of the country's hidden gems. 'Neidhal' is the first in the series, and is a limited release of 12,000 bottles with 1200 bottles being allocated to India. The name references ancient Tamil texts, dating back to the Sangam period (300 BC – 300 AD), in which earth is classified into five regions called 'Tinais', each being associated with its own distinct literary style, grammar, mood, romance, culture and even cuisine. Neidhal comprises all oceans and neighbouring regions and the way of living associated with them.
Matured & bottled at Amrut, the source of the whisky is not disclosed. Whoever distilled it could well have taken inspiration from Ardmore, as this presents in a Highland smoke-guise while retaining a sparkle of coastal freshness. The aromas are mirrored on the palate where sweet smoke melts into even sweeter malt; super pure, the finish balances out with hints of mint chocolate, medicine chest, pepper and sooty peat. 46% Alc./Vol.
Notes from the bottlers... tropical fruit and vanilla punctuated by soft phenols and sea salt on the nose. On the palate, a fruit cocktail with a touch of iodine. The middle ground is an essay in chewability and a finish that is phenolic with a touch of sweet vanilla.

The 2020 Les Perrières from limestone soils is the first vintage with massal-selection Merlot (from Lafleur). It has an exceptionally pure bouquet of intense black berry and blueberry fruit, crushed stone and touches of Japanese nori. The medium-bodied palate is structured, tensile and very saline, with taut tannins and that limestone-driven pixelation clearly apparent on the finish. Vibrant, almost steely, this will require 2–3 years in bottle.

This is a wine for those who really love going deep-diving into limestone. It performs the acrobatic, trapeze artist feat of tiptoeing high above the palate with gunsmoke, cool blueberry and redcurrant fruits and flowers curling upwards. Austere and fierce, stretching forward, then softening as it opens, although it takes its time to do so. There is really a feeling that they are doing something different here, thinking deeply about what it means to link wine's sense of a place to its expression in a glass. Brilliant. Sporting an opaque purple-black color, the 2020 Hosanna gallops out of the glass with bright, vivacious scents of crushed black and red plums, mulberries and redcurrant jelly, leading to underlying scents of powdered cinnamon, lilacs, pencil shavings and damp slate with a hint of wild sage. The medium to full-bodied palate is exquisitely constructed, giving lots of nuanced, tightly wound black fruits and earthy layers with a fine-grained texture and seamless freshness, finishing long and mineral laced.

The 2020 Hosanna has a wonderful, compelling bouquet of deep and alluring scents of blackberry, raspberry, dried iris and incense, plus a subtle minerally element that becomes more prominent with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with superb grip and density. The wine just fills the mouth (as banal as that sounds), but it has incredible volume and depth. Clockwork precision on the finish, which maintains great freshness, but this is clearly a Hosanna that will benefit from a decade in the cellar.

This is another magical Pomerol from the Moueix family that you couldn't have enough of.

Dark in color, the wine is loaded with truffle, flowers, black and blue fruits and spice. Full-bodied with a serious depth of flavor, the wine is rich, supple, silky, long and intense. With the texture of velvet, the perfectly ripe, sweet, plums, cherries, blackberries, blueberries and dark cocoa holds on to your palate for at least 50 seconds. The purity here is just great. Give it a decade in the cellar and this will be a beauty. Clearly, this is the finest vintage of Hosanna ever produced.

The 2020 La Fleur-Pétrus is a gorgeous, polished wine. Super-ripe red cherry, plum, blood orange and pomegranate lend tons of immediacy and primary fruit character. Suave on the palate, with exquisite length, La Fleur-Pétrus is a wine of total sensuality. In 2020, ripeness is pushed to the edge, while the new oak is a bit present. Bright acids and sweet floral notes linger on the long, beautifully delineated finish. This is a bit more extroverted than I remember en primeur, but superb just the same. Drink 2030-2060.

The finest vintage from this address I've ever tasted, as well as a perfect wine, the 2020 Château La Fleur-Petrus reveals a dense purple hue to go with a deep, layered, full-bodied, yet flawlessly balanced style carrying a smorgasbord-like array of red and black fruits, chocolate, dried flowers, spicy oak, and damp earth. It's not a powerhouse in the style of Trotanoy, Vieux Château Certain, or say, Clinet, but is all about finesse, elegance, and complexity. Roberto Conterno acquired Nervi in 2018, and this is the first vintage in which the brand name is listed as Conterno Nervi (as opposed to Nervi Conterno, or just Nervi). Fully under his winemaking watch, the 2018 Gattinara comes from a vintage that performed well in this part of Alto Piemonte. Roberto had the confidence to produce his two single-vineyard expressions (Vigne Molsino and Valferana) in 2018, which is not exactly intuitive, as the growing season proved more challenging in other parts of Piedmont. But Roberto interprets each vintage with a keen eye and deft approach that is often contrary to his peers. I think what stands out here is the freshness, the balance of acidity that plays nicely into the minerality of the wine and the brightness of its wild rose and redcurrant flavors. This Gattinara carries a lot of fruit and primary intensity, all backed by subtle touches of balsam herb and soft tarry end notes. This 2018 underlines the elegance in Nebbiolo. Drink 2024 - 2040.

Senior Blender, Zerose Yang adds, “Its main character, the dried fruits of the oloroso cask, are embellished with the sweetness of PX and Moscatel casks... The resulting liquid offers notes of cinnamon, candied smoked plum, and citrus, layered with a nose of berry, tropical fruits, and longan, alongside a dash of honey, chocolate, and toffee on the palate."
For those who are used to the distillery's extravagant cask strength expressions, this takes a step back. The nose presents an attractive array of dried fruits and plummy malt, mingling with sweet spices. It's an accessible, middle weight style, with a convincing sherry lick and an appropriate dash of spice. You can't really fault the balance, but in the context of what this distillery is best known for, it's Kavalan light. 40% Alc./Vol.

Deep midnight black colour with a very dark red hue. A bounty of aniseed and dark plum scents jump out of the glass followed by toasty vanillin oak and peppered earth notes. Rich and lush, the palate is doing a remarkable job at holding onto its fruit with lashings of aniseed, blackberry and black plum flavours layered across the medium to full bodied palate. Vanillin oak, earthy fennel and spicy pepper characters lie underneath. Velvet smooth tannins with an impressively long and fleshy finish. Great value especially given the bottle age.
Drink over the next 1-2 years.

Other reviews... There is an outlandish outbreak of massive flavour on delivery, both the malt and fruit almost shrill in their proclamations of intent. This is high juiciness in excelsis, the sugars crisp and full of grist and Dmaerara. And on the finish a slight chocolate note hovers, but then a degree of sulphur drifts in... as threatened by the nose.... This has so many beautiful moments. Imagine I haven’t tried the 18 since… Oh my, 2007! But Jura was weak back then, really. Some nasty bottlings, not all of them, but there. Now this newer expression was finished in some Bordeaux red, most sadly (not STR), but you never know, this little juice may have escaped the mighty cabernety army. Which, by the way, I just love – In my wine glass. Colour: golden amber. Nose: some earth, peonies, blood oranges marmalade, heather honey, candied cherries, leather and ginger, more earth, wallflowers, pecan pie… I have to say this is a fine, rather rich and yet pretty elegant nose. But don’t we all know that silly wine finishings usually rather fail… on the palate? Mouth: nah, they know what they’re doing. This is not my preferred style at all, and we’re rather finding more café latte plus these dusty and honeyed sides (both at the same time), but otherwise except a drying cardboard and coffee combo in the back, this would rather kind of work, relatively. Well no, I’m having trouble liking it a lot, honestly. Finish: medium, dry and a little burnt and bitter. Burnt molasses, heavy cinnamon, some sour cardboard in the aftertaste. Comments: love the distillery, the people, the master blender, the settings and some of their whiskies, but frankly, I find this one rather too difficult. Tough love. 75 points - whiskyfun.com
