For over four generations, the Catena family has grown vines in the foothills of the Andes Mountains in Mendoza, Argentina. Laura Catena, great-granddaughter of winery founder Nicola Catena, is currently at the helm. Produced from a blend of four vineyards harvested at different times, this excellent Chardonnay is matured for 10-12 months in French oak barrels of varying ages.

Rich and concentrated yet fresh with a wonderfully textured, stony like feel.

Brilliant pale straw colour with highlights of green around the edges and a watery hue. Elevated white peach and pear scents stream out of the glass complimented by hints of dried honey, wet slate and an oyster shell like minerality in what is a Chablisique like sniff. Rich and concentrated yet stony like in it’s feel, the palate is layered with delectable white peach, pear and lime fruits. Wet slate, infusions of fresh herbs and a smoky oyster shell like minerality ensue. Wonderfully textured and fresh it has a long wet stone laced finish that also has a dash of spice to it.

Wafting out of the glass are heady scents of ripe blackberry, liquorice, dark plum and blueberry which are complimented by some fennel, subtlety smoked vanillin cedar and peppered earth notes. Rich, plush and deeply concentrated, the weighty palate is flush with succulent blackberry, liquorice and dark plum fruits. Lending further interest across the back half are notions of spicy vanillin cedar, earthy dark chocolate and peppered fennel. Charles Heidsieck Brut Reserve Champagne

    $1199.88 Dozen
    ABV: 12%

This blend of 40% Pinot Noir, 40% Chardonnay and 20% Pinot Meunier is sourced from up to 60 different Crus in order to maximise complexity and is made up of 50% reserve wines, many of them more than 10 years old to provide additional richness. Pours well with a creamy white mousse and pale gold base wine colour. Very fine delicate bead showing excellent persistence. Refined aromas of yeast lees and brioche are overlaid by some toastiness with following notes of baked bread and cashew. Showing both richness and finesse the palate has seamlessly integrated flavours of baked bread, yeast lees and toastiness over some almond and brioche. Clean dry finish with a moderately creamy mouthfeel. Long aftertaste of baked bread, yeast lees, cashew and toasty brioche.
Drink this outstanding Champagne over the next 4-5 years.

Charles Heidsieck might be nicknamed Poor Man’s Krug given the astonishing number of vintages in the reserve wines, their age (10 years in tank), and the seven years the wine spends on lees once blended and bottled. It is an exceptional wine in the mouth, supple, layered, complex and long.

James Halliday - Australian Wine Companion

Very impressive for a "regular" non-vintage Brut, not only in terms of aromatic complexity - candied citrus, dried peach and fresh mirabelle plus a hint of bread dough - also in terms of texture, the creamy, rich and crisp sides of the wine neatly interlocking. Long, structured finish. A cuvee that's half 2018 and half reserve wines, some of which are a couple of years old, but many of them are five- to 10-years-old, with several over 10-years-old. Drink or hold.

A richly fruited, muscular Bordeaux with bling galore that’s framed by firm, chewy tannins.

A highly awarded, firmly built, straight Malbec from Bordeaux. Pitch black in colour with a dark red black tinged hue. Pronounced blackcurrant, ripe black cherry and liquorice aromas waft through the nostrils trailed by some blueberry, vanillin cedar, earthy dried herb and spice notes. Rich blackcurrant, liquorice and black cherry fruits are framed by a robust tannin structure which imparts a firm, muscular feel across the back half. Vanillin cedar, scorched earth and spicy dried herb elements are also evident. Fresh and well fleshed yet quite chewy, it has a deeply fruited medium to long finish that carries plenty of grip. Ideally drunk with a good chunk of meat to obscure the firm tannins.

Made entirely from Malbec. This lifts out of the glass with blackberries, blueberries and wild pomegranate seed. Thistle, cedar and leather polish, oak matches the intensity of fruit. Vibrantly ripe with the added sturdy frame of firm tannins and lingering acidity. It’s a wine you’ll want to sit and inhale for hours but would equally work with a juicy sirloin and pomme puree. A seductive wine that showcases the integrity of Malbec, standing on its own. Drink now or will cellar well for another 10-12 years, this is in the infancy of its life, and an impressive journey still yet to go. Drink 2025-2037.

From the Petit family winemakers in the Entre-Deux-Mers appellation, this 100% Malbec release has plenty of focused Bordeaux character to it, full bodied and structured with its statement varietal aromas based on crushed blue and black berry fruit and a delicate top note of violet florals. Classic Malbec territory. Palate wise as well, “Malbeccian” powdery chalk dust feels underlying a solid backbone with encouraging acidity. All this augurs well for impressive cellaring longevity, and in fact a few hours airing is most beneficial. (By the way, this bottle stayed open and fresh for a week!)

Sauternes enthusiasts have long known that across the Garonne River they can procure what is arguably the greatest value wine in sweet white Bordeaux, which in exceptional years produces a wine equal to Sauternes which may sell at two or three times its price. This bizarre anomaly is the Chateau Fayau Cadillac, and although the wine cannot be labelled Sauternes as such, it is essentially identical in every way.

A vinous bargain when one considers the prices of top Sauternes houses.

Brilliant straw yellow pale gold tinged colour with a watery hue. Leaping out of the glass are honeyed peach and apricot scents followed by some marmalade, sweet pineapple and delicate spice notes. Luscious yet not heavy or cloying, coating the palate are honey drenched flavours of apricot and peach which are intermeshed with notions of pineapple, marmalade, subtle toffee apple and spice. Château Fontis is located in the town of Ordonnac. The vineyard has an elevation of up to 38 metres on the highest ridge of the Médoc, offering a beautiful view of the Gironde estuary. About twenty years old, it has 10 ha of vines planted with equal parts Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon resting on soils made up of Pyrenean gravel and limestone. The wine is aged in vats and new barrels.
Made from a blend of 50% Cabernet Sauvignon and 50% Merlot. Totally opaque black dark red colour with a dark red black tinged hue. Charming the olfactory senses are delightful red to black currant aromas which are trailed by hints of tobacco, dusty cedar, black olive and spicy dried herb notes. A certified organic Bordeaux blend of 40% Sauvignon Blanc and 60% Semillon fermented in old Sauternes oak barrels and aged for 6 months on lees to give the wine more volume and textural appeal. The fruit is primarily sourced from a vineyard that was planted to Sauvignon Blanc by accident around 40 years ago. (For their Sauternes, Guiraud were after a Semillon-heavy cuvee - too much Sauvignon Blanc was not considered the right balance for a sweet wine). Instead of selling off the Sauvignon or re-planting, Guiraud decided to create a special dry white and the “G” was born.
Brilliant pale straw colour with a subtle greenish tinge around the edges and a watery hue. Aromas of green apple and lime have a subtle herbaceous gooseberry overlay with hints of grassy asparagus characters and light pencil shaving notes also evident. Intensely flavoured and beautifully shaped, the palate features pear, lime and herbaceous gooseberry flavours over a back drop of delicate pencil shavings, grassy asparagus characters and spice. Great textural volume and crisp acidity rounding out to a long, dry and highly savoury conclusion.

Full and fruity nose, expressive and ripe, nicely perfumed and expressive. Clean and clear, extremely mineral, graphite, pencil lead and flint stone notes on the palate alongside clear blue fruits, blueberries, blackcurrants and some red summer berries. Super smooth in terms of texture but also quite lean in terms of fruit flavour, this has bite and tang, a touch austere but also really quite juicy and floral too. Needs a bit of time, but feels precise and focussed with grip and intensity. I like the fruitiness, really quite upfront but keeping the liveness and energy. Succulent and nicely sweet touches with juicy acidity. Easy enjoyment, plush, mineral, all in balance. 3.6pH. 12% press wine. A yield of 39hl/ha. Drink 2026-2044.

One of my favorites this year and surely a wine that punches above its weight, the 2022 Joanin Bécot reveals a perfumed, vibrant bouquet of iris, lilac, dark berries, licorice and violet. Medium to full-bodied, supple and satiny, it's lively and juicy with a fresh core of fruit, bright acids and fleshy texture, concluding with a fresh, ethereal and mouthwatering finish. This blend of 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc is a real success and worth hunting down. Drink 2025-2032.

I loved the 2022 Château Joanin Bécot, a juicy, lively, nicely balanced Castillon that has perfumed red fruits as well as the classic mineral and floral nuances of the region. It's medium-bodied, has integrated acidity, and a great finish. The blend is 80/20 Merlot and Cabernet Franc from the cooler, limestone Castillon region east of Saint-Emilion, and this beauty will drink well for 10-15 years if well stored. Readers could do much worse than a case of this in the cellar. Drink 2025-2040.

This entry level Bordeaux offers a window into the quality of the outstanding 2022 vintage, one which Vinous critic Neal Martin states “two thousand twenty-two witnessed the birth of legendary wines and unbeatable value-for-money….” . And Jeb Dunnuck also lends his lofty praise of the vintage “This is an extraordinary vintage that will go down in record books as one of the all-time greats….. It’s possible to discover sensational wines from small châteaux and lesser-known appellations at surprisingly affordable price points.”
Whilst certainly not one of the vintage’s legends, this blend of 60% Merlot, 35% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Cabernet Franc, without a doubt delivers fantastic value featuring rich blackcurrant fruit that shows ample flesh.

A rich, generously endowed Bordeaux from the outstanding 2022 vintage that delivers great value.

Deep black dark red core with a dark red black tinged hue. Ripe red to black currant and liquorice aromas fill the nostrils followed by some earth, cigar box and spicy dried herb notes. The 2022 La Gaffelière, one of the finest wines I’ve encountered at this address, is a blend of 60% Merlot and 40% Cabernet Franc. Crafted primarily from the prime hillside vineyards beneath Ausone, this wine exudes violet, dark berries, licorice, cherries and smoke, with subtly integrated oak influences. It's medium to full-bodied, deep and powerful, with a multidimensional, fleshy core of fruit and youthful yet powdery tannins framed by a tense, energetic mid-palate, typical of the limestone soils. Concluding with a long, saline and complex finish that marries tension and charming to pleasing effect, it was matured for 19 months in 50% new barrels. Drink 2030-2042.

The 2022 La Gaffelière is fantastic, but it has also closed down considerably post-bottling. Supremely elegant and perfumed, the 2022 is an absolutely stunning wine. Blood orange, pomegranate, spice, white pepper, dried herbs and all sorts of floral overtones soar from the glass. The Franc is so impressive here. The 2022 Château La Gaffelière comes from a mix of 60% Merlot and 40% Cabernet Franc that's from 22 hectares of classic Saint-Emilion limestone soils. The élevage spanned 19 months in just 50% new French oak. Its deep ruby/plum hue is followed by a stunning nose of ripe red and black fruits, spring flowers, spicy wood, and crushed stone-like minerality. With flawless balance, a pure, full-bodied, seamless mouthfeel, ripe tannins, and a great finish, it's the finest vintage of this cuvée I've tasted and will most likely warrant a perfect rating in a decade. Juicy and fun, this has a playful edge that's really enjoyable, a sweet, mouthwatering cherry and blueberry flavour with tannins that are textured like ripe grape skins, fleshy and filling. Plump weight yet this remains still quite direct and focussed. Good energy and persistence with layers and bitter, minty, herbal spice on the finish giving the lingering and lasting impression, but well made. Really so effortless in the glass, appealing, full, weighty, lovely concentration - tannic strength but finesse and cool juiciness all the way through. Great quality and value. Tasted twice. One of the more muscular, concentrated 2022s in my tastings, the 2022 Château Larcis Ducasse sports a deep ruby/plum hue to go with serious aromatics of ripe red and black cherries, smoked tobacco, new leather, truffle, and an incredible sense of crushed stone-like minerality. Rich, full-bodied, and massively concentrated on the palate, this intense, flawlessly balanced, voluptuous 2022 has a stacked mid-palate, velvety tannins, and fabulous length on the finish. I wouldn't be surprised to see this close down with 3-4 years of bottle age only to re-emerge after a decade. Medium to full-bodied, layered and enveloping, it's seamless and concentrated with a multidimensional core of fruit, velvety tannins, a vibrant mid-palate and a long, saline finish. Drink 2028-2042.

The 2022 Larcis Ducasse is a huge, vertical wine. Readers will have to be patient, as the 2022 will need quite a few years to shed some of its considerable baby fat. Dense dark red fruit, new leather, licorice, rose petal and mocha are all broadly sketched. Imposing and vertical in build, this is immensely promising. The 2022 spent 14 months in oak (40% 225-liter barrels, 40% 500-liter barrels and 20% foudre), then three months in cement. I can't wait to see how this develops. Tasted two times. Drink 2030-2062.

Smells gorgeous, black fruits, milk chocolate and floral notes. Supple and lively, crystalline and pure, you get both the juicy, fleshiness of the dark and concentrated fruit but with tension and detail and definition. Clarity and bite, this really works and delivers everything you want in terms of tannins, minerality, freshness and density. Controlled and purposeful and keeps a quiet confidence and strong intensity the whole way through. Clearly powerful, but refined and sophisticated. Compelling, darkly seductive and oh so drinkable. A fantastic wine in the making. Harvest 9 - 23 September. Ageing 16-18 months; 60% new barrels, 40% one wine (225L and 400L). Derenoncourt consultants. Drink 2025 - 2040.

The dark, purple hue stands out. Licorice, smoke, oyster shell, espresso, black cherries, and plums are all over the perfume. The wine explodes from the glass with its layers of opulent, black and red fruits, dark chocolate, espresso, smoke and chocolate on the palate. Full-bodied, powerful, and most importantly pure, there is a depth of flavor, and richness on the mid-palate that sticks with you through to the extended, mineral-driven finish. I would not be surprised to see this score even higher once it is in the bottle. The wine blends 86% Merlot with 14% Cabernet Franc, 14.6% ABV, 3.5 pH. The harvest took place September 13-September 23. Yields were 34 hectoliters per hectare. Drink from 2027-2055.

A rich, bold and chewy Southern Rhone blend.

A blend of 70% Grenache, 20% Syrah and 10% Mourvedre, two thirds of which was aged in tank and one third in barrel for a period of 18 months.
Very deep dark red black heart with a dark red purple tinged hue. Dark to black raspberry, liquorice and black cherry aromas flood the nostrils with notions of scorched earth, herbs du Provence and pepper also evident. Rich, bold and chewy, a tidal wave of black cherry, liquorice and black raspberry fruits engulfs the full bodied palate. Robust tannins lend a muscular feel with notions of scorched earth and peppered meats the undercard. Concentrated and power packed it has a long opulently fruited yet sturdy finish.

Puts on a formidable display of rich, expansive red to black fruit framed by dense, muscular tannins.

Today Chateau Pontet Canet is one of the most popular and collectable wines in all of Bordeaux, and much of this success has come from the extraordinary quality of wines made in the last two decades. While ranked as a Fifth Growth in the 1855 Classification, today the property would easily be regarded as a Second Growth as the wines often rival the best in the region. Much of the emphasis at Pontet Canet is in the vineyard, and the property has converted to 100% biodynamics as of 2005. The vineyard is next to Chateau Mouton-Rothschild, and is planted to 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc, and 1% Petit Verdot.
Impenetrable inky black heart with a very deep dark red black hue. Intense ripe red to black currant and red liquorice aromas flood the olfactory senses with some violet, crushed rock, vanillin cedar, dried herb, subtle tobacco and spice notes lending further complexity. Rich and expansive yet firmly built, a formidable core of red to black currant and red liquorice fruits are framed by dense, muscular tannins. Vanillin cedar, earth, subtle dark chocolate, graphite, delicate tobacco and spice elements unravel across the assertive back half. Boasting magnificent power, the exceptionally long, tightly coiled finish is one that combines energy, sophistication and a robust feel.

The 2022 Pontet-Canet is a super-refined wine from the Tesseron family. It is perhaps a touch less opulent than in years past, but in exchange, it boasts more energy, focus and cut, all qualities that are so welcome here. Bright red/purplish fruit, lavender, rose petal, mint and mocha all build effortlessly in the glass. In 2022, Pontet Canet is shaping up to be an absolute gem. Drink 2028-2042.

The concentration of dried herbs such as thyme, sage and mint with blackcurrants and Spanish cedar is mesmerizing. Full-bodied with a dense and intense palate, this has creamy, crunchy tannins and a long and flavorful finish that goes on for minutes. Punchy and rich with lots of power. The real identity of Pontet-Canet comes through despite the hot and dry growing year. 57% cabernet sauvignon, 35% merlot, 4% cabernet franc and 4% petit verdot. From biodynamically grown grapes. Best after 2029.

A sensational Pauillac as well as the finest wine from this château since the 2009 (although the 2010 might have something to say about that), the 2022 Château Pontet-Canet sports a deep purple hue as well as a heavenly perfume of crème de cassis, smoke, incense, leafy tobacco, and chocolate. This beauty has sensational purity, a deep, layered, multi-dimensional mouthfeel, flawless balance, and incredible precision and detail in its aromas and flavors. Despite its opulence and power, it has a solid underlying structure, and its tannins are sweet and polished; it has remarkable depth and concentration, and it just does everything right. I wouldn't be surprised to see this firm up slightly over the coming 3-5 years, although I don't expect it to truly shut down. It should have 40, 50, if not 60 years of overall longevity. The 2022 is based on 57% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Merlot, and the rest Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, brought up in 50% new barrels, 35% in amphora, and the rest in once-used oak. Drink 2037-2097.

Dark and ripe on the nose, with deep blackcurrant, cocoa powder, and espresso notes alongside fragrant dried herbs, adding a savoury elegance. The palate is clean and crisp, offering a streamlined weight and a lovely bite to the tannins — powdery yet refined, with hints of milk chocolate and bitter orange. Restrained power meets finesse, with a touch of spice and soft warmth on the finish. Still youthful and compact, but incredibly detailed, with pure, bright fruit shining through. One of the finest Pontet-Canets in years - round, complete, and beautifully textured. Bright, finessed, and highly accessible. Drink 2029-2050.

Deep purple with a blue hue in color, the wine is almost opaque in color. Cassis, flowers, plums, licorice, and tobacco leaf aromas adorn the perfume. It is already clear that with this wine, it is the purity in the fruit that stands out. The palate is equally pure, with its layers of glycerin-filled blackberries, and plums. The wine is lush, as well as refined. The finish meshes concentration with elegance, power with purity, lift and length. The peppery, spicy note, along with the resounding minty-freshness, and a touch of anise in the long, finish is what stands out here. There is no sensation of heat or over ripeness in this wine in the mid-palate or in the finish. The wine blends 57% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc, 4% Petit Verdot.14.7% ABV, pH 3.8. Harvesting took place September 8 - September 28. This is longest harvest and the earliest harvest in the history of the estate. The wine is aging in a combination of 50% new, French oak, and 35% Amphora. Pontet Canet is often a slow starter in barrel. My score could go higher when the wine is in bottle. Drink from 2028-2060.

The 2022 Rauzan-Ségla is showing well in bottle, unfurling in the glass with aromas of dark berries and cherries mingled with licorice, burning embers and pencil shavings. Medium to full-bodied, ample and velvety, it's suave and seamless, with its dense core of fruit framed by powdery structuring tannins that lend a more evident backbone than it exhibited en primeur. As readers may remember, the 2022 is a blend of 72% Cabernet Sauvignon, 26% Merlot and 2% Petit Verdot; and in 2022, the east-facing sides of the vines, which see the afternoon sun, were picked separately, along with anything that showed signs of stress. The 2022 Rauzan-Ségla is a classy, elegant wine. Even so, the 2022 very clearly lacks the immediacy of some surrounding vintages. Readers should be prepared to cellar this for a number of years The mid-weight, gracious presence of Rauzan-Ségla is very much present, and yet the tannins are pretty imposing. Dark red/purplish fruit, rose petal, graphite and white pepper are all beautifully delineated in the glass. The 2022 is pure and total sophistication. The flagship 2022 Château Rauzan-Ségla checks in as 72% Cabernet Sauvignon, 26% Merlot, and the balance Petit Verdot, all aged 18 months in 50% new French oak. It's much more focused and precise compared to the second wine and has brilliant aromatics of crème de cassis, crushed violets, graphite, and smoky oak. Gorgeously concentrated and full-bodied, with riveting purity and precision, this stunning Margaux has ripe yet building tannins, a terrific mid-palate, and flawless overall balance. I love it today yet 7-8 years of cellar are warranted and it will cruise over the following 3-4 decades in cold cellars. It's another sensational wine from this estate. Drink 2033-2073.

Gorgeously fragranced on the nose with perfumed black fruits and pink flowers - smells very Margaux. Clean and crisp, a beautiful precision from the start with ripe and rich fruit but cool fresh acidity and sleek, fine tannins. A little shy, still compact and tightly knitted, but lovely detail, so well worked, almost delicate but there's still quite fleshy, plush fruit. Excellent concentration but delivered with an easy sleight of hand, expanding with time in the glass. Glamorous, scented, inviting, deep and seductive. A brilliant and totally moreish wine. Yield of 30hl/ha. 3.7pH. 17% press wine. Harvest 2-28 September. Ageing in French oak for 14-16 months, 15% new. In organic conversion. Tasted twice. Drink 2029 - 2048.

Dark in color, the array of floral notes shoot out with violets, lilacs, and roses. From there you find truffle, red and black fruits, cigar box and cedar also come through in the nose. While the perfume is catchy, it is on the palate where the wine takes off. Texturally, the wine is drenched in velvet. There is intensity, richness, and concentration, as well as weightlessness on the palate. With this wine, the seamless finish must be felt, as well as tasted. The wine is a blend of 72% Cabernet Sauvignon, 26% Merlot. This marks the highest percentage of Cabernet in the blend and with 17% press wine in the blend, it is the highest portion of press wine as well. 14.5% ABV, 3.7 pH. The harvest took place September 2 - September 28. This is the earliest start to a harvest for Rauzan Segla. Yields were 30 hectoliters per hectare. This is a rare opportunity to acquire one of Australia’s greatest Shiraz in magnum format at a bargain basement price with over 20 years bottle age behind it. Priced at or below most vintages of Penfolds Grange in 750ml format this is a once off offer that can never be repeated.

"Frankly, along with Penfold's Grange, this may be the greatest Shiraz being made in Australia." - Robert Parker

Impenetrable pitch black heart with a very dark red hue. Hedonistically scented, sent wafting from the glass are dark plum, liquorice and blackberry aromas which are complimented by leather, vanillin cedar, earthy dark chocolate and spice notes. Rich, silky and super intense, the seductive palate is saturated with voluptuous waves of aniseed, blackberry and dark plum which gradually evolve into a leather, dusty vanillin cedar, black olive and pepper back drop. Exceptionally powerful and expansive it possesses cashmere like tannins and finishes tremendously long and plush. Tasted from a 750ml bottle we expect the magnums to look even more impressive and show less development.

Structurally, it is similar to the Piggott Range, revealing abundant amounts of sweet, ripe tannin, and huge extract, richness, and depth. Meant for true connoisseurs who are willing to forget it for 5-8 years, it represents what Roman Bratasiuk and Clarendon Hills do so well ... show respect for the great traditions of France, but recognize the extraordinary raw materials that emerge from old vines planted in McLaren Vale. A polished and simply delicious grain at a bargain price.

Launched in 2022, the Bourbon-barrelled 'Grain Barn' is as the name suggests, a single grain matured in former barns at Claxton's Dalswinton Bond. Created to bring the category further into the limelight, it's a shining example of just how assured grain whisky can be. At the time of writing, from the original 1500 bottles there were only about 50 left at Claxtons (word has got out!) It starts with a well-weighted bouquet mingling banofee pie, sticky date, vanilla fudge and cocoa, following on the palate with impressive depth and barely a hint of heat; You get a sultry, slow-motion cascade of Bounty bar, mocha and vanilla wafer biscuit flavours that continues to build texture. By the finish it's buttery and borderline luscious. A polished and simply delicious grain at a bargain price, it comes handsomely presented to boot. And like almost everything else from this bottler, it's nice to see they've released it at a decent ABV. 48% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered. Batch 001 tasted.

Whilst best known for their Shiraz Viognier, Clonakilla also produce world class Riesling. Murrumbateman's cool climate and decomposed granite soils are ideal for it’s production. The 2025 vintage was outstanding one for the varietal, resulting in a compelling release that’s concentrated and textural.

Ah riesling – vintage barely done and dusted yet here you are in my glass. You’re a delight and delicious, even in this still-evolving stage; the patient will be rewarded, so pop some away in the cellar. Open it today and you’ll be greeted by a waft of lemon and lime blossom, waxy hoya flowers and plenty of citrus tang on the palate, with a distinct mandarin flavour. There are no harsh edges with the acidity, just a lovely sensation of talc and texture. Drink by 2035.

Jane Faulkner - James Halliday's Australian Wine Companion

There are two types of wine lovers. Those who understand and appreciate the glory of Australian Riesling, and those who are yet to see the light. Among the former, most will turn immediately to the Clare and Eden valleys, with a nod to Frankland River. Some of our other regions are woefully underestimated and Canberra is proving itself very much part of the neglected, when it comes to this grape. The Rieslings from here can be beautifully constructed, taking advantage of the cooler climate. My spies, and the evidence to date, suggest that the 2025 vintage is a truly spectacular one and anyone interested in seeing just how good these wines can be should turn their attention to them as soon as possible. Quantities are never extensive. Clonakilla is, of course, best known for its brilliant reds, especially the Shiraz Viognier. Do not ignore their Riesling. It is something special. A very pale lemon hue, there are intense aromatics with citrus, florals, limes, bath salts and talc all evident, with slight chalky notes in the background. Bright, zesty acidity runs the length and the wine is immaculately balanced. Utterly pristine, there is excellent focus and a very long and persistent finish here. This sits with the very best Clonakilla Rieslings I have seen. Drink over the next 15 years. Drink 2025-2040.

Made using oranges mostly from Spain and Haiti, this relatively new release (for Australia) is inspired by an old recipe from the early 1900s for a Triple Sec and cognac blend. Originally called ‘Majestic’, this contemporary rendition combines 70 percent Cointreau with 30 percent Remy Martin cognac. The original recipe also includes macerations of nuts and almonds. Cointreau's stated aim is for "...a product that appeals to lovers of single malt whisky and dark rum as well as making cognac more approachable for female drinkers." Its bright amber-gold appearance leads into perfumed aromas of orange pith and peel counterpointed by richer, heavier scents of fresh baked orange cake, jaffa and orange sorbet. A glycerous, creamy entry glides into a silky, orange cake / orange zest infused mid palate carried by a subtle spirit backbone, ending semi-sweet with a delicious blood orange fade. Broader and less vibrant than the original, this is no doubt intended to blur the lines between the Cointreau brand and an equally famous rival - Grand Marnier. Both are equally good. 40% Alc./Vol.

The fruit for this wine was sourced from low yielding vineyards in the Lower and Upper Yarra Valley with a variety of handling and fermentation techniques, including the use of whole bunches employed. Maturation took place in a combination of seasoned and new French oak for a period of 8 months.
Dark red core with black shaded edges and a red to dark red hue. Perfumed like nose with aromas of violet, dark cherry, strawberry and anise followed by hints of spicy cedar, dried herbs and forest floor. Moreish red to dark cherry, strawberry and subtle anise flavours are supplely draped across the palate. Spicy vanillin cedar, delicate dried herb infusions and forest floor elements extend across the back half. Expansive and possessing more than ample power, it has velvet smooth tannins and a long seductive finish.
Drink over the next 5-6 years.
    Alc. 13%

Some whole bunches and matured in a combination of seasoned and new oak (25%). A very bright crimson. Gorgeous aromatics redolent of picked red cherries, wild strawberry and potpourri. Equally vibrant and energetic on the palate, it's so well balanced that, while delicious now, it will continue improving for quite a few years to come. That it's so well priced is the icing on the cake. Drink by 2031.

"the epitome of truly great Bourbon." - Jim Murray's Whisky Bible 2023

These BIB releases are what Australian Bourbon lovers really miss out on. Even if you can find them, the prices are often prohibitive. Score one as good as this and the deal gets sweeter. From a fresh bottle, it's a little prickly and smells like varnish, leather and hazelnuts, but later goes deeply caramelly, nutty, dried fruit and Bounty Bar-like after additional exposure. Spirity and warm, though not without a serious injection of sugars; by mid palate it turns buttery, maple-like, rounded, even soft. The finish offers toasted tea biscuits, bitter chocolate, crushed mint and a gentle, oaky astringency. The reigned-in spirit is nicely harmonised and the quality of the wood really shines. You have to love the evolving character of this ballsy, compelling, and at moments, luscious Bourbon that demands patience to show its very best. 50% Alc./Vol. No mash bill stated.

...The mouthfeel is nicely balanced and more floral than I expected based on the nose. Overall fantastic in terms of being not too heavy, not too light, just the perfect balance that allows you to hold it in your mouth and really chew on it. It’s not overly complex, but that doesn’t make it any less enjoyable... E.H. Taylor Small Batch is really a contrasting bourbon. On one hand you have a really full-flavored bourbon that can almost go head to head with it’s bigger brother E.H. Taylor Single Barrel and holds it’s own. On the other hand you're paying slightly more for the presentation of the packaging for the bourbon it contains. While I wish this sold for [a little] less, there’s no denying that it’s a really solid bourbon that most individuals will enjoy. The palate is delectable and sans the heavy alcohol upfront, the overall flavor profile is enjoyable. If you haven’t had a chance to experience this yet make sure to seek it out, as it truly is a good introduction into the E.H. Taylor line of whiskeys. - breakingbourbon.com

Triple Sec (or curaçaos) done right are some of the finest fruit liqueurs money can buy. Some would say that the best examples are blended with old brandy, however even clear versions can make stunning standalone drinks. Between the different brands, there are differences in the types of oranges used, the combination of oranges and the type of alcohol base employed. With the exception of the cognac-infused Grand Marnier, they're (arguably) interchangeable in cocktails, including classics like the Margarita, Cosmopolitan, Sidecar, Long Island Iced Tea and White Lady where they bring a sweet and complex citrus flavour to balance the other ingredients. In the end, it’s all about your personal preference as to which brand you choose and how you intend to use it. One rule holds steady - don't buy cheap. There are many substandard Curaçaos and Triple Secs that do the category a disservice.

While not as well known as its main rival, Cointreau, Combier holds the place as the world's first clear orange liqueur. They produce two Triple Secs. This is the lower abv version (25% as opposed to 40%) and it's a finer, lighter, fresher alternative to Combier's super-exuberant 'L'Original.' The aromas open floral, feminine and medium dry, at first evocative of Meyer lemons then bergamot before moving into orange pith and peel. The juicy mid palate sweetness is understated, offset by delicate citrus zest, orange oils and discreet spices, fading with pith and peel tang, hints of Earl Grey tea and icing sugar. 25% Alc./Vol.

"Comparing Combier to conventional triple sec is like comparing a Monet to a kid's fingerpainting." - tastingpanelmag.com

While not as well known as its main rival, Cointreau, Combier holds the place as the world's first clear orange liqueur. Created in 1834 by Jean-Baptiste Combier and his wife Josephine, it's made from sun dried orange peels steeped in alcohol and triple distilled in copper pot stills. Pouring crystal clear, bright and viscous, the aroma is of freshly peeled oranges / baked lemons - oily, pithy and more peel than pulp, exhibiting superb freshness and purity. Entry is glycerous and creamy leading into a juicy, plush, concentrated palate delivering a stunning explosion of ripe orange. The sweetness is tempered by lively spices. Finishes in stages, with more pith and peel entering, finally, fresh and dry, as the warmth subsides with the candied orange and zesty peel playing out at length. Riper and richer than Cointreau (which is the benchmark for the genre), but equally brilliant. 40% Alc./Vol.

Excellent fruit intensity and flesh with slightly chalky tannins and bright acidity.

Sangiovese was pioneered in Australia by Coriole with the first vineyards planted in 1985. It provided a contrasting style to shiraz - the great tradition of McLaren Vale - and has proven to be ideally suited to the warm maritime climate of the region.
Red to dark red colour with black shaded edges and a vibrant red hue. Intense dark cherry and ripe red currant aromas jump out of the glass followed by some dried herb, earth and spicy tobacco notes. Juicy red currant and ripe cherry fruits flood the mid weighted palate overlaying a red liquorice, dried herb, earth and spicy tobacco back drop. Excellent fruit intensity and flesh with slightly chalky tannins and bright acidity. Long, generously fruited, spice laden finish.

Such a reliable performer. I probably say something similar most years. Sometimes the well of inspiration runs dry when it comes to my introductions. Bright, crunchy, energetic sort of wine. Red cherry, raspberry, iron filings, some dried herb and almond. It’s medium-bodied, has a light grainy grip to tannin, good varietal flavour, and a lively finish of excellent length. Good stuff. Fermented with 15% whole bunches, with seven days total on skins; six months in seasoned oak. Fragrant and supple, with sour black cherry, wild raspberry, goji, pressed flowers and hardy Mediterranean herbs, this is an excellent expression of the grape. Hitting mid-weight and savoury, absent any confection, which can sometimes dog the variety, this is so adroitly made, picked at the right time and avoiding any showiness by using winemaking tools to frame, not control, with the line of fine and ripe, sandy tannins underlining its class. Nailed it. Drink by 2030.

There is still plenty of energy within and the slight toasty character expected with age is starting to show its hand. Honey tones are seeping through too, with lemons and limes not far from the action, albeit not as vibrant but there is still some zip. A sip slow and consider type of wine, match this with the textural splendour of scallops and heaven awaits. This will live comfortably for at least another decade. Superb stuff indeed. Drink to 2034+

Rich yet texturally refined with a fresh feel to the long, elegantly creamed finish.

Todd Dexter is probably best known for his work alongside Brian Stonier at Stonier wines where during his 10 year stint as chief winemaker the brand was propelled into Mornington Peninsula’s most famous label. Todd and his wife Debbie purchased a vineyard site in 1987 where they planted their first 1.6 hectares of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir but it wasn’t until the mid 2000’s that the first wine was released under the Dexter label.
Fermented and matured in 500 litre French oak puncheons (20% New, 30% second use, 50% older) with 50% of the blend undergoing malolactic fermentation. Brilliant pale straw colour with subtle highlights of green around the edges and a watery hue. Elevated white peach and nectarine scents complimented by some dried honey, cashew, biscuity nougat and spice notes drift through the nostrils. Rich yet texturally refined, the mid weighted palate is layered with fleshy white peach, nectarine and cashew flavours. Traces of dried honey, biscuity nougat and spice lie underneath. Dictador's premium offering is distilled partly in copper pot alembics and partly in steel continuous column stills before being aged in a solera system. It's noteworthy that the oldest part of the blend is twenty years old - not the youngest, which is seven. Tasting the 12 and 20 year old releases side by side, the younger version showed more aromatic personality and better overall length. It will be a question of personal preference; both are nicely balanced examples worthy of a rum lover's attention. In this expression, the bouquet opens with soft, sensuous notes of sticky date pudding, brown sugar and creme caramel with a sense of freshness retained. Entry is light and brisk building into a superb, concentrated profile of roasted nuts, dilute molasses and sweet ginger biscuit and spice trailing off with moderate length. The presentation makes it unmissable on a bar shelf. 40% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... not so much brilliant as simply, conservatively solid in its display of rum making fundamentals. If you haven't been inspired to try the aged rums of the Caribbean then you’ve got a lot to look forward to. This applies not only to those who’ve never moved beyond Bundaberg and Coke since high school, but more so to those who are serious about wine, whisky and brandy - in short, those of us who are passionate about ‘flavour’. Quality Caribbean rum has as many permutations of aromas, tastes, textures and strengths as any group of wines or spirits. The rum market in Australia has increased exponentially and the overall quality is superb. We now have access to many small and large producers who are vying for attention and the very reasonable prices mean rum is not just a passing fad.

Aside from the familiar Caribbean island groups, more and more people are becoming aware of a ‘mainland’ rum tradition. Think Nicaragua, Gautemala, Panama or Venezuela. The latter, already famous as the spiritual home of the rum based medicinal bitters, Angostura, is now finding its rums eclipsing that legacy. The country has a number of highly regarded offerings, but those from the Distilerias Unidas in La Miel on the northern slopes of the Andes lift the bar highest.
Their Diplomatico label is the international reference.

We prefer to let what’s inside the bottle do the talking, but it is impossible to overlook this venture’s remarkable accumulation of twenty plus international awards since 2007 (54 medals in contests worldwide), including the SIP Awards, San Francisco World Spirits Competition, Miami Rum XP, Monde Selection and other big guns. Even if the show circuit is irrelevant to you, a different kind of achievement came in October 2011 when the company’s Maestro, Tito Cordero, was honoured at the Golden Rum Barrels Awards as the World’s Best Master Blender. He was the first Venezuelan to receive the award. Given that so much depends on how the distiller and blender create their product, this was the rum world's supreme commendation of Cordero's skill and outright quality fanaticism.

A reinvigorated project that stemmed from an early Seagrams investment in the 1950s, passed on to Diageo, and is now in the custody of the Ballesteros family, the distillery is adjacent to the Hacienda Saruro, where much of the sugar cane is grown. Average daytime temperatures of 30-31C drop by 6-7C at night, a differential which when coupled with high humidity benefits cane growth: it concentrates the sugars and favours the ageing process. Different varieties are grown to make sugar honey and molasses. Molasses is preferred for the light rums, sugar cane honey for the heavy. While many producers are struggling to get molasses with a sugar content above 45%, Diplomatico are ahead of the pack before they even begin. Venezuela regularly achieves upwards of 60%.

Not unlike other distilleries, here pot stills are for richness and weight, column stills for adding freshness and elegance. Between the two are batch kettles that carry out secondary distillations of semi-heavy rums. Varying proportions of each create a hierarchy of styles. Barrel regimes vary, including ex-bourbon with some re-filled single malt whisky casks. Sherry casks are now being experimented with to great effect, as the 2000 Vintage release bears testimony. Finishing departs from the mainstream, as most Diplomatico rums are given only a delicate filtration prior to bottling - gentle enough to maintain fatty acids and maximum mouthfeel - then filtered using 3 micron-thick filter pads. It is minimal interference by world standards, Cordero considering it a formality to ensure the rums retain their clarity and brilliance when exported to cooler climates.

Diplomatico's flagship cuvee is aged for up to twelve years and typically blended from around 80% pot still rums; the remaining 20% are lighter styles from column stills. Cordero mixes a little cane sugar prior to blending which is another reason why the flavour seems amplified compared to some others in the stable. Stylistically this edges Ron Zacapa 23 for satisfaction and sheer saturation and is the one that many of our customers measure other rums by. Those whose taste preferences tend towards the savory may misunderstand what is an unashamedly dessert / quasi- liqueur styled effort that falls into a sub-category of its own. Almost as decadent as a rum can get without cloying the mouth and falling out of balance - there are more complex rums around, but not near this price, nor do they have the same uncanny ability to incite superlatives. The packaging depicts Don Juancho Nieto Melendez, who was a noted rum enthusiast in the town close to the distillery. It's reported that, being something of a globe trotter, over many years "...he amassed a large collection of rums which he took great pleasure in offering his guests at the lavish dinner parties he held at his house."

Tasting note: Brilliant copper with a gold hue. Heady and decadent scents of creme caramel, fresh coffee, chocolate fudge, vanilla and spice. A silky, creamy mouthfeel yields a plush array of dried fruits, raisins and coffee-caramel, counterpointed by a gently warming spirit heat. Perfect balance, seamless integration. Very long, mouth coating aftertaste of vanilla and liquorice strap with a subtle dark chocolate finale. Avoids the too sweet trap. A stunning rum that will instantly convert many a Muscat or PX Sherry drinker. This remains one of the most re-purchased spirits on our shelves. 40% Alc./Vol.

The 2015 Dom Pérignon is terrific. Bright and poised, the 2015 shows terrific energy. Citrus peel, white flowers, mint, white pepper and slate all race across the palate. The 2015 Dom Perignon pours a bright straw/yellow color and is expressive and layered on the nose with a tropical profile in its notes of cantaloupe, peach, fresh pastry, smokey wet stones, and orange blossoms. Medium to full-bodied, it offers a rounded and ripe but very well-detailed feel, with a soft, chalky texture. This was a very successful vintage for Dom Perignon, producing wines that retain a great deal of clarity and detail in this warm vintage. Drink over the coming 20 years. Drink 2024-2045.

Disgorged in January 2023, the 2015 Dom Pérignon shows a singular, ethereal profile with aromas of white pepper, iodine, ripe orchard fruits, toast, smoke, herbs and spices. Medium to full-bodied, layered, and structured, it’s enveloping and round with a delicate phenolic mid-palate that underlines chalky dry extracts, concluding with a sapid, penetrating finish with gastronomic bitterness. This iteration of Dom Pérignon, though replete with the customary charm and vinous generosity that typify the label, distinguishes itself by its structural delicate austerity and a notably phenolic profile, giving rise to a remarkably linear and well-defined style that diverges markedly from the more familiar expressions of Dom Pérignon. This is a blend of 51% Pinot Noir and 49% Chardonnay with a dosage of 4.5 grams per liter; it will age wonderfully and can be enjoyed now or over the next 20 years. Drink 2024 -2054.

Located in the north-west sector of Chablis in the village of Maligny, Pierrick Laroche runs this family estate which was established by his father in the 1970s. After getting a degree in oenology from Beaune, Patrick travelled the world, doing various internships to gain experience before returning home to start making wine and take over the family vineyards for himself. In 2010 he ceased selling grapes to the local co-operative and produced his first vintage to great acclaim.
The domain has nearly 12ha of Petit Chablis, classified as such because the limestone tends to be the younger Portlandian rather than the older Kimmeridgian, and as such typically occupies higher sites (Portlandian overlies Kimmeridgian) and has less clay. Pierrick is convinced that his largest parcel of Petit really ought to be classed as Chablis; it makes wine like Chablis and indeed is surrounded by AOC Chablis vines.
Brilliant pale straw colour with a faint greenish tinge around the outskirts and a watery hue. Attractive pear and lime scents laced with wet stone and an oyster shell like minerality drift through the nostrils with ample volume. Delicious pear and lime fruits are delivered with excellent concentration and carry a beautifully rounded river stone like feel. Wet stone, oyster shell, subtle infusions of fresh herbs and a saline like minerality linger underneath. Brisk acidity finishing long and shapely.

Domaine du Pegau Reserve is produced from 85% Grenache, 9% Syrah and 4% Mourvedre, Counoise and other varieties. While previously Cuvee Laurence was made from a specific barrel selection, today the wine is same blend as the Reserve except it has been aged in barrel for a longer period of time. The grapes are not destemmed, and the natural yeast fermentation is completed in traditional, cement vats before ageing in old, French oak barrels for an average of 40 months.
According to Laurence Feraud, the wine is aged to approximate what might happen with Pegau Reserve after ten years of aging. On average, close to 650 cases are produced each vintage of Domaine du Pegau Cuvee Laurence.
Black as night heart with a deep dark red black tinged hue. Wafting out of the glass are ripe heady scents of black raspberry, liquorice, blackberry and black cherry which meld into scorched earth, dried meats, hints of leather and pepper. Rich black cherry, liquorice and black raspberry fruits are backed by a muscular tannin structure. Notions of scorched earth, leather and peppered dried meats add a further nuance to the back palate. Dry, slightly grippy finish. Excellent power and concentration with a long robust aftertaste.

Enveloping, warm and spicy nose with an extremely wide spectrum of aromas, ranging from dried rose to graphite via thyme and smoked bacon. Very powerful, concentrated and earthy, yet there’s brightness in there that makes it shine, Stunningly fine tannins power the super-long finish. Drink or hold.

I loved the 2017 Châteauneuf Du Pape Cuvée Laurence. It has a more classic style in its Provençal aromas and flavors of peppery herbs, garrigue, sandalwood, and charcuterie, with medium to full-bodied richness and depth on the palate. It’s a classic, complex, gorgeous wine in the making.

A blend of 80% Grenache and 20% Mourvèdre sourced from the lower terraced parcels of the Plan de Dieu lieu-dit, in the commune of Violès. The Grenache vines are over 70 years old and come from two sites, one planted on red clay and the other on galets (smooth river-worn pebbles). The younger Mourvèdre vines are planted on sandy soil. The wine is fermented for 30 days in concrete vats, then matured for 10 months in a mix of concrete tanks and large old 50 hL oak foudres.

Eden Hall was established by David Hall, a well-respected spinal surgeon, and his wife Mardi when they purchased the Avon Brae property in 1996. They quickly set about re-establishing the vineyard and the first commercial release was in 2004. Today the property has over 80 acres under vine. Sourced from selected rows in Eden Hall’s Block 4 vineyard, the wine was matured for 22 months in French oak and spent more than a year in bottle prior to release. The talented Phil Lehmann was the winemaker of this large scaled 2021 Shiraz.

A powerhouse of dense, rich, voluptuous fruit.

Impenetrable inky black in colour with a very deep dark red black tinged hue. Wafting out of the glass are heady aromas of ripe blackberry, liquorice and dark plum which are married to toasty vanillin oak, dark chocolate, fennel and peppered earth notes. Smoky vanillin oak, fennel and peppered earth elements also chime in to add further interest across the back half. Velvet smooth yet solidly structured tannins. These unusual ‘deluxe’ all-natural bottlings are now considered 'quintessential' distillery expressions by many, instantly identifiable by the heavy Ibisco decanters they come in. Drawn from a batch of American oak ex-bourbon barrels, this one marks a point of difference to the frequently heavily masked sherried styles. Instead, the distillate is on show, which has been compared in weight and richness to Mortlach. Serge Valentin at whiskyfun.com describes similar releases as "lovely, thick yet bright spirit." (The days when the quality of Edradour was a gamble are definitely over!) Expect notes of coconut, tea biscuits, green apples, nutmeg, cream and honeycomb. The outturn was 1997 bottles at 60% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

Other reviews... The aroma is intense, typical for aging in ex-bourbon. Notes of peaches and vanilla. The flavor is bright, powerful, and intense, with a strong retronasal effect. The finish is quite long but light, with honey-fruity notes and a touch of spice. The aroma can and should be savoured, but drinking it is even more enjoyable. Watch out, 60ABV is not a joke. But i still did drink it stright and with out water. - whiskybase.com
