    Bottle
    $2039.88 Dozen
    ABV: 51.2%

A fairly standard Benriach at natural strength - sweet, fresh and spicy. This one has a subtle sulphury edge threatening the palate along side a gingery, grassy character. Otherwise, lightly oily, brisk, warming and lively. The influence of the wine cask is difficult to detect. 331 bottles from a Tawny Port Barrique at 51.2% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered. $2399.88 Dozen
    ABV: 56.8%

On the nose, nothing close to as smokey as your average Ardmore, rather, more sherried (confirmed by the label). Classically sweet Highland peat in the taste, sprinkled with cocoa; some biscuity malt and understated dried fruit character but overall, unusually dry and spicy, especially at the finish. Quirky for this distillery. 64 bottles only. Matured in an oloroso sherry octave. 56.8% Alc./Vol. Non chill-filtered. Tasted from a 30ml sample.

It says Tobermory on the label, but it tastes closer to Ledaig, so medium- peat Tober', or a Ledaig without bristles? Time in an octave has slightly tamed the beast. Besides traces of lanolin, most of those earthy ‘dirty’ notes retreat; Sherry lingers with bittersweet fruit’n'nut chocolate. Like Ledaig, this ruffles up the tastebuds; Unwieldy and raucous, it's a whisky that never quite settles into rhythm or form. 69 bottles from an oloroso sherry octave. 53.2% Alc./Vol. Non chill-filtered. Another 50% ABV flavour hit. Despite the provenance, the peat is dialled down allowing the soft stone fruits to get a showing. The texture is mouthwatering and comes with a keen sense of cured meats; Rich cereals are the keynote. Oily peat rises through the finish, but never asserts first place. The overall effect is very pleasing - perfect for drinkers who don't mind a wisp of smoke in their whisky. Bourbon cask matured. 50% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

Notes from the bottlers... NOSE: Currants with samphire. Very coastal – smoked mackerel. Brazil nuts. PALATE: More samphire/seaweed notes with a salty-sweet kick (sweet peppers). FINISH: Salty-tingly finish. Smoked meats on the finish.

Deep black dark red core with a dark red hue. Delightful red currant and mulberry scents stream out of the glass with some earth, subtle dried herb, light tobacco and spicy cedar notes also chiming in. Mid weighted, elegant and showing classic Bordeaux structure, the palate is layered with delicious red currant fruits which meld into a spicy cedar, dusty earth, tobacco and dried herb background. Sturdy in it’s feel with fine, graphite like tannins, it shows ample freshness and has an appealingly firm, spicy red fruited conclusion. Great everyday drinking Bordeaux.

"Make no mistake. Clynelish ranks among the 10 best distilleries in the world..." 95 points. - Jim Murray's Whisky Bible 2022

Jim Murray raved about the 14 year old in his 2022 Whisky Bible, positioning it as one of the most highly rated and affordable malts of the annual. Serge Valentin of whiskyfun.com ranks Clynelish a Grand Cru Classé and one of his favourite makes. Yet today, only a tiny percentage is marketed as a single malt, the remainder being allocated to the Johnnie Walker Gold blend.

Thinking of the great centres of malt whisky, Speyside and Islay come first to mind. But other regions play a part in whisky’s story, and Scotland’s far north-east, from where Clynelish comes, is one. Located on the stormy sea coast of Sutherland, Clynelish is a replica of the modern Islay distillery, Caol Ila. Not long after the original Clynelish was built in 1819 by the Duke of Sutherland, its quality was already highly prized and only private customers were supplied; “trade orders” were refused and Clynelish was “always the highest priced of any Scotch whisky.” ' Old Clynelish' was mothballed in 1968 and re-opened as 'Brora' the following year, focusing on peated malt. 'New Clynelish' was built adjacent to Brora, the latter ceasing production in 1983.

In the present day Diageo-owned operation, barley is malted with a medium peat and mashed with water from the Clynemilton burn to produce the wort, which is then distilled twice in pot stills. Described by whisky writer, Dave Broom as "A disarming malt that exudes sheer class", Clynelish’s style stands out for its low-peat coastal character, which is often notably waxy (think snuffed candles, beeswax or wax lined jackets) complexed by hints of orange peel and briny sea air. That pretty much sums up our experience of this bottling.

Other reviews... salt and honey bound, giving a pleasant sharpness to the sugars while the oak plays a weighty role: the base, alongside what seems like a shard of smoke... For a moment you don't concentrate on the flavours, as it is the slightly waxy texture that holds you in thrall. Then the honey slowly makes its mark and spreads... At last the style and shape is there to be seen... though there is still so much more to reveal. 95 points - Jim Murray's Whisky Bible 2022

...The initial aroma is large, biscuity and grainy sweet; the aroma then becomes more sugar biscuit-like and a touch salty. Palate entry finds generous and malty-sweet flavors; by midpalate distinctive notes of black pepper, seaweed, oaky vanilla, honey and dark caramel are added. Finishes elegantly, sweetly and malty, with just a barely discernable influence of the sea. Best Buy 90-95 points. -wineenthusiast.com

...It’s good to see an official distillery bottling of Clynelish in the U.S. This one is very true to the Clynelish style: fresh, appetizing, and very drinkable. Notes of brine, fruit (lemon-lime), and vanilla-accented malt, are the foundation of this whisky. Delicate seaweed, peat, exotic pepper and a hint of citrus rind bitterness entertain the palate throughout, all the way to its appetizingly briny, seaweed-tinged finish. Perhaps the definitive aperitif whisky. 87 points - whiskyadvocate.com, reviewed by: John Hansell, Winter 2004

Nose: Excellent complexity with diced carrots adding to the earthy, salady aroma. Some sweetness but drier than usual. Palate; Fruity, grapey and beautifully mouthwatering: quite different from the nose. Brilliant sub-strata of peat runs throughout and adds a luscious sweetness to compliment the sultanas and spice. Finish: Smoky and dries rapidly to allow in a cocoa effect. Comment: A disarming malt that exudes sheer class. 85 points - whiskymag.com

Lovely red to dark raspberry, red liquorice and blueberry scents drift from the glass accompanied by hints of violet, fresh herbs, delicate earth and subtle pepper notes. Rich and concentrated yet quite light on its feet, the mid weighted palate is awash with dark raspberry, liquorice, dark cherry and more subtle blueberry fruits. Awarded an MW of wine in 2020, winemaker Duane Coates is by his own admission, a 'heart over head' winemaker. Inclined to make wine from almost any interesting parcel of fruit made available to him, he tends to make accountants wince. For Duane, making great wine is not about business decisions; it’s about curiosity, passion, and a little bit of folly. His wines marry Australia’s richness of fruit with the savouriness and complexity of the old world.

A rich, mouthfilling Cabernet that boasts tremendous power.

Matured for 18 months in French oak. Dense midnight black heart with a deep dark red black tinged hue. Powerful blackcurrant and ripe mulberry aromas flood the nostrils followed by cedary tobacco, black olive, earth and bay leaf notes. Rich, concentrated and powerful but not overweight, the medium to full bodied palate is engulfed with blackcurrant, mulberry and red liquorice fruits. Tailing off through the back half are notions of vanillin cedar, tobacco, black olive and spicy bay leaf. Fine grained tannin structure concluding very long, deeply fruited and polished.

"the epitome of truly great Bourbon." - Jim Murray's Whisky Bible 2023

These BIB releases are what Australian Bourbon lovers really miss out on. Even if you can find them, the prices are often prohibitive. Score one as good as this and the deal gets sweeter. From a fresh bottle, it's a little prickly and smells like varnish, leather and hazelnuts, but later goes deeply caramelly, nutty, dried fruit and Bounty Bar-like after additional exposure. Spirity and warm, though not without a serious injection of sugars; by mid palate it turns buttery, maple-like, rounded, even soft. The finish offers toasted tea biscuits, bitter chocolate, crushed mint and a gentle, oaky astringency. The reigned-in spirit is nicely harmonised and the quality of the wood really shines. You have to love the evolving character of this ballsy, compelling, and at moments, luscious Bourbon that demands patience to show its very best. 50% Alc./Vol. No mash bill stated.

    F. Paul Pacult's Spirit Journal rating: 5 stars/Highest Recommendation.

...The mouthfeel is nicely balanced and more floral than I expected based on the nose. Overall fantastic in terms of being not too heavy, not too light, just the perfect balance that allows you to hold it in your mouth and really chew on it. It’s not overly complex, but that doesn’t make it any less enjoyable... E.H. Taylor Small Batch is really a contrasting bourbon. On one hand you have a really full-flavored bourbon that can almost go head to head with it’s bigger brother E.H. Taylor Single Barrel and holds it’s own. On the other hand you're paying slightly more for the presentation of the packaging for the bourbon it contains. While I wish this sold for [a little] less, there’s no denying that it’s a really solid bourbon that most individuals will enjoy. The palate is delectable and sans the heavy alcohol upfront, the overall flavor profile is enjoyable. If you haven’t had a chance to experience this yet make sure to seek it out, as it truly is a good introduction into the E.H. Taylor line of whiskeys. - breakingbourbon.com

From vines over 100 years old; matured in French oak, about 25% new. This feels the more ‘traditional’ of the 2021 reserve shiraz bottlings, with a typically dense core of dark fruits adorned with star anise, bitter chocolate, laurel, brewed coffee, turned earth and a gentle but apparent sheen of oak. It’s a powerful wine with substantial tannin, but the evolving stewardship of the younger Lloyds has been fine-tuning the portfolio for a little while now, with this suitably refined, if perhaps appealing to drinkers with a little nostalgia for headier times. Either way, it’s a keenly crafted and balanced wine of place. Drink by 2036.

A shiraz of depth, power and impressive precision. Palate-staining dark fruit, licorice, kirsch and smoked meats. There is ample oak, and yet despite the tannic mettle and powerful extract, this is a wine of considerable poise and grace. In other words, it doesn't feel heavy. Superb length and glimpses of the many layers as they unravel with each visit back to the glass. Best after 2028. Screw cap.

One of the finest Australian Fiano’s we’ve tasted.

Fiano originates from a province in Campania, east of Naples and it’s perfectly suited to the McLaren Vale climate, so much so that it has become the regions fastest growing white wine category. Coriole planted Fiano in 2001 and their first commercial release was the 2005 vintage.
Fifteen percent of the blend was barrel fermented in older French hogsheads.
Brilliant water like core with a distinct greenish tint to the edges. Filling the nostrils are intense lime and green apple scents infused with fresh herbs which are trailed by some wet slate and flinty mineral like notes. Boasting superb concentration and textural volume, the mouth watering palate is awash with crunchy lime, green apple and citrus fruits. Infusions of Mediterranean herbs and stony mineral characters linger across the back half. Crisp acidity finishing dry, super long and scrumptious. A rich, textural style of Fiano that’s incredibly moreish.

The thing about Coriole Fiano, is that it tastes like Fiano. Is this the 20th release of this wine? Well, around about that.
Green apple, green herbs, a whiff of aniseed, lemon peel, and a little bit of seaside fun. It’s juicy, it’s quite savoury too, with some raw almond and herbs, a lively tang of green apple and pink grapefruit, a light chalky grip to texture and plenty of zing and energy, plus some quinine bitterness on a finish of excellent length. Bust out the calamari and chips, it’s game on. Drink 2024-2029+

Raised in tank (75%), old oak (10%) and concrete (15%), with the latter finding increasing favour with winemaker Duncan Lloyd over oak. Brightly fruited and subtly complex, with a savoury, backbone and oyster shell minerality. Lemon pith, tart golden apple, green almond, yellow grapefruit and soft herbs seasoned with fennel seed and white pepper. There’s a seamless quality to this, peppy acidity neatly meshed into the finely-tooled mouthfeel, escorting the flavours through a crisp and very long exit. Drink by 2028.

Sangiovese was pioneered in Australia by Coriole with the first vineyards planted in 1985. It provided a contrasting style to shiraz - the great tradition of McLaren Vale - and has proven to be ideally suited to the warm maritime climate of the region.
Dark red core with black shaded edges and a red to dark red hue. Spicy red currant and red cherry aromas mix with red liquorice, Mediterranean herb and earth notes. Juicy yet savoury the palate features expressive red currant and red cherry fruits over a fresh herb infused back drop of earth and spice. Slightly chalky tannins and bright acidity lead into a conclusion that’s energetic and savoury.

Always a very nice wine, and great value too.
Cherry, almond, aniseed, a smattering of dried herbs, maybe lavender. It’s medium-bodied, kind of juicy, kind of savoury, there’s some strawberry in with cherry, some grainy grip to tannin, slightly ferrous, gently bitter with amaro, and the finish is fresh and pretty long. It’s maybe a little more crunchy and herbal than some vintages, and yet, it still lays on the charm. Nice. I do like a wine that doesn’t try too hard to be anything other than a great drink. Drink 2024-2032.

Bright, cherry red and vivid in the glass. Pretty aromas of sour cherry, redcurrant, dried flowers, briar, wet earth and spice. Lively, crunchy and red and blue fruit driven. There’s some textured and chalky tannins delivering shape and mouth-feel and the acidity has plenty of ping and zip. This has real purity and varietal typicity and importantly, real drinkability.

Aaron Brasher - The Real Review

Coming off five sites, and seven clones, this was raised in older oak for 11 months. Referential to Tuscan origins, but its local identity firmly rooted, this is a thoroughly engaging expression, classically redolent of red cherries, woody herbs, dried flowers and a grounded, dry-toned earthiness. Spice notes, too. The varietal tannin and acid union tension the palate, with fruit contained, wound in, but not quashed. It’s approachable and fragrant, speaking of the cool year, but that immediate appeal is paired with layered detail, too. Drink by 2030.

Crown Royal Black Blended Canadian Whisky (1000ml)
    Ontario, CANADA
    $119. 99

    $1439.88 Dozen
    ABV: 45%

"...oaked to within an inch of its life, but Crown has taken it just to the edge — and brought it back again." - drinkhacker.com

Crown Royal Black is a more robust and intensely flavoured take on traditional Canadian whiskies, which often place emphasis on 'mellowness'. This expression is not only extra-oaked, but also bottled at 45% abv, which is unconventional given that high-proof bottlings fell out of common practise in Canada around the 1950s. It pours a deep bright copper / mahogany colour and follows with sweet, heavy scents of dilute maple syrup, vanilla wafer and cocoa. A soft, light entry leads into a semi sweet burst of vanillan oak, light maple syrup and lively spices with a touch of rye kicking in the finish. It's finally medium dry and gently peppery with fresh cut wood emerging late into the aftertaste. All-round a richer offering than your standard CR, and with zipped up spiciness, bourbon drinkers should enjoy this as an alternative, as should lovers of PX matured malts. 45% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... Defintely and imprvement from the last time I tasted this, which was something akin to being hit over the head by a branch from a maple tree... Chewier and sweet sugars now seem to enjoy a pleasant toing and froing with the toasty oak and spice. Plenty to grapple with here. 87 points - Jim Murray's Whisky Bible 2023

...Not exactly black. (More like russet, but Crown Royal Russet isn't as catchy.) It's nice to see the higher strength, and there's definitely more flavor here than the standard Crown Royal or Crown Royal Reserve. But it's missing the smoothness and elegance I cherish in other Crown Royal whiskies. Notes of molasses and maple syrup, accentuated by burnt fig, hints of pedro ximenez sherry, and raisin. There are suggestions of dark rum and bourbon in here. (Perhaps an alternative to both?) A whisky to drink on the rocks or as a mixer. 78 points - whiskyadvocate.com

Crown Royal Black is, as you may expect, an added-oak version of the venerable Crown Royal Canadian whisky. In this case, “black” is no joke. It may very well be the darkest color whiskey I’ve ever encountered, a deep hazelnut color in the glass. The spirit in a full bottle is nearly opaque. This concerned me. Over-oaking is a serious risk in whiskey, and the worry of a ruined whisky was on the top of my mind. The good news is that Crown Royal Black isn’t too far gone. Yes, it is oaked to within an inch of its life, but Crown has taken it just to the edge — and brought it back again. The body is sweet like standard Crown Royal, but laced with intense oily wood notes, cinnamon, black pepper, and dried figs. Surprisingly mild for 90 proof, that wood character even overpowers the alcohol out of the spirit. Long and smoldering finish, like a campfire turning to ash. That, of course, has good and bad connotations. I expect CR Black may be too much whisky for many. Others will find it’s got a rustic, frontier character that also finds a bit of balance in its own odd way. - drinkhacker.com

2022 Dalrymple Vineyards Mt. Lord Pinot Noir

    $1440.00 Dozen
    Cellar: Drink now - 8 Years (2025-2033)

Boasting superb richness, power and a supple feel, this is superb expression of Tassie Pinot that draws comparisons with top end Burgundy.

The crown jewel in the Dalrymple collection, the Mt. Lord Vineyard is located on a small, angular and varied landscape that lays on the protected easterly slope of the Pontos Hills. The vineyard rows run up the hillside from 134m to 156m above sea level, precariously positioned between a rock ledge below and steep barren hillside above.
The fruit was handpicked with a small amount of the bunches placed directly into the ferment. Maturation took place in French oak barriques (30% new) for a period of 10 months.

Deep dark red core with black tinged edges and a dark red hue. Intense spicy dark cherry, rhubarb, dried herb and bramble scents sail through the nostrils with some forest floor, subtle strawberry and cedar notes also making an appearance. Rich, concentrated and supple in its flow across the palate, it shows fabulous power and expansive volume. Dark cherry, strawberry and rhubarb flavours infused with dried herbs are further complexed by notions of brambly cedar, forest floor and spice. Velvety tannins seamlessly integrate into the very long, complex and highly savoury conclusion.

A new offering from Dalrymple from the Mt Lord vineyard, purchased by Hill-Smith Family Vineyards in 2012. Bright ruby with lifted aromas of red cherry, red plum and raspberry pip. Notes of fine spice suffuse through the wine with hints of struck flint, raspberry coulis, powdered stone, wildflowers, gentle game tones and a distant whiff of leaf litter. Fine, lacy acidity provides energy and drive. Fruit ripe and pure, stretched in a canvas of fine, kinetic tannin, supple and finely detailed as it retreats. Drink by 2036.

Dave Brookes – James Halliday’s Australian Wine Companion

I was fortunate to taste the only sample of this wine in the UK, and it is one of the most remarkable Tassie wines of my life.  Take all of the purity and expression we know and love from Tasmanian elite Pinot Noir, then concentrate it just a touch.  Darken the fruit, add a hint more muscle, spice and shantung silk textural mystery, along with a whisper of magical whole bunches and some rhapsodic French oak and the picture is complete.  Pete Caldwell captured the essence of this site in Polaroid perfection. Then, he made the near-impossible happen by transferring all of the energy and greatness of this fruit without squandering a drop of potential into the bottle.  I implore the lever-pullers at Hill-Smith Family Estate’s HQ to heave a few cases of this wine onto the next Dalrymple boat to the UK.  If this wine appeared next to various Clos de Vougeots, Bonnes-Mares and Chambertins this week, it would bring the house down!  Drink 2026 – 2035

Fruit was sourced from Dalrymple’s own vineyards at Pipers River and Coal River Valley along with growers in Swansea and Ouse. Utilising a variety of blocks, different clones and slightly different aspects each of these sites made its own unique contribution to the final blend. The cooler northern maritime location at Pipers River produces Pinot Noir that is focused and structured, while the Coal River Valley in the south adds texture and softness to the mid-palate. Five to twenty five percent whole bunches were included depending on the site and maturation took place in French oak barriques (20% new) for a period of 9 months.
Dark red core with black toned edges and a red hue. Wonderfully perfumed nose with aromas of violet, red to dark cherries, strawberries and subtle anise sailing out of the glass followed by notions of spicy cedar, forest floor and fresh herbs. Light, fresh and supple in its feel, delicious red cherry, strawberry and delicate rhubarb flavours move across the palate with forest floor, fresh herbs and spicy cedar lingering underneath. Polished tannins and bright acidity with the elegant, red fruited finish showing a savoury edge.

With a history dating back over 50 years this iconic Pyrenees producer has earned a reputation for producing sturdily built Cabernets that develop a Bordeaux like finesse with bottle age. For the 2017 vintage maturation took place in French oak barriques for a period 18 months.

Bordeaux inspired Pyrenees Cabernet that’s drinking beautifully.

Totally opaque black dark red colour with a deep dark red hue. Delightful red to black currant and ripe mulberry scents sweep through the nostrils with enchanting effect, complimented by some well integrated spicy vanillin cedar, delicate tobacco, earth and dried herb notes. Still retaining an abundance of rich red to dark fruit, the refined palate has mellowed wonderfully with bottle age. Red to black currant and mulberry flavours overlay a cedary tobacco, subtle earthy black olive, dried herb and spice back drop. Providing the framework are seamlessly integrated, fine grained tannins which carry a sturdy underbelly. The long, polished conclusion showing a real sense of finesse.

From an iconic Pyrenees producer, whom we’ve previously featured under the Nicks Secret guise, comes this second label Shiraz which at almost 50% off delivers exceptional value for money.

Rich and juicy yet refined and structured, this Pyrenees Shiraz delivers serious bang for your buck.

Matured predominately in seasoned French oak barrels for a period of 14 months. Midnight black heart with a deep dark red black tinged hue. Pronounced black cherry, liquorice and blackberry scents fill the nostrils with hints of choc mint, vanillin cedar and peppered earth adding further dimension. Medium to full in body, the palate is layered with rich blackberry, liquorice and black cherry fruits which are framed by sturdy tannins. Gently muscular in it’s feel, echoing through the long, refined finish are notions of spicy vanillin cedar, earth and peppered meats. With plenty of life left in it, this will continue to drink well over the next 4-5 years.

    Other Reviews…..
Very deep, bright red/purple colour. Spicy, peppery, fresh earth and red fruit aromas of some complexity, especially considering its youth. The wine is medium to full-bodied and soft-textured, with no shortage of tannin, but the texture is supple and drying, the fine-grained powdery tannins augmenting the savoury flavours. There is abundant fruit within but the overall style is savoury, food friendly and very stylish. Very long aftertaste. Great value.

From the highest distillery in Scotland (at 326 metres above sea level), set in the windswept Grampian mountains of the Highlands, comes this delicate malt to be savoured. Originally called 'Strathspey', the Dalwhinnie distillery was founded by James Buchanan in 1897. Buchanan became well known for his 'Buchanan' and 'Black & White' blends which used Dalwhinnie as a core component. Later renamed 'Dalwhinnie', (Gaelic for “meeting place” ) the distilleries site is where cattle drovers and smugglers met on their way to markets in the south.

The whisky itself is often referred to as 'The Gentle Spirit', in contrast to the rugged environment it is produced in. (Staff at the distillery have been known to climb out first-floor windows in order to get to work when snow piles up in the hard winters.) This is testified to by its subtle, smooth, lightly smoked character and heathery, honey finish. Barely classifiable as a Speyside distillery, Dalwhinnie's location is at least forty kilometres south of the dense collection of stills in the 'lower Spey'. The distilleries endless water supply comes from the Allt an t'Sluic spring, bedded in granite. Current management boast their use of traditional wooden washbacks and distinctive lye pipes leading from the tops of the stills.

Other reviews… Nose: sublime stuff: a curious mixture of coke smoke and peat-reek wafts teasingly over the gently honied malt. A hint of melon offers some fruit but the caressing malt stars; Taste: that rarest of combinations: at once silky and malt intense, yet at the same time peppery and tin-hat time for the tastebuds, but the silk wins out and a sheen of barley sugar coats everything, soft peat included; Finish: some cocoa and coffee notes, yet the pervading slightly honeyed sweetness means that there is no bitterness that cannot be controlled; Balance: a malt it is hard to decide whether to drink or bath in: I suggest you do both. One of the most complete mainland malts of them all. Know anyone who reckons they don't like whisky? Give them a glass of this ~ that's them cured. Oh, if only the average masterpiece could be this good.” 95 points. - Jim Murray’s Whisky Bible 2018.

Hand picked and fermented in open-tops, before 18 months maturation in French barriques, mostly used. Highly regional aromas of baking spices and dried fruits meld with a contemporary whiff of florals and blueberry, affirmed by a pulpy mid-palate, a grind of pepper and considerable energy driving the finish. A full-weighted wine of a crunchy levity, ensuring that nothing gets too sweet or out of hand. Very good drinking and exceptional value. Drink by 2027.

"Dead Reckoning is perhaps producing rums that are the closest in terms of profile as Foursquare’s own Exceptional Cask Series... Another absolute belter..." - thefatrumpirate.com

A serious ‘malternative’ from one of the finest producers in the Carribean, this single cask, nine and a half year old mix of Foursquare pot and column distilled spirit was tropically aged in Barbados for eight years then transported to Adelaide for a twelve month spell in a forty year old Pedro Ximenez Sherry cask (usually associated with single malt maturations). Bottler, Justin Boseley decided it needed further tweaking to temper the sugars, so it saw a final year in a high-char x-Maker's Mark bourbon barrel. Foursquare's cognac-like elegance is retained, with a little funk and fruit on the nose followed by a flavour range that evokes orange chocolates, ripe papaya, molasses cake, vanilla malt, liquorice and dried fruits. Gingerbread, pepper and cinnamon warmth lift the finish. Medium sweet instead of cloying, the sherry is deftly handled; Tasted blind you might even mistake it for a single malt or Fine Champagne cognac. 370 bottles at 50% ABV make up the final outturn.

Other reviews... In terms of a comparison this drinks more like Foursquare’s 2004-2011 series than anything which they have matured in ex-Sherry, Madeira etc. As a result the finish is drier and less sweet than you might have expected from the initial sip. The difference between the initial sip and the finish is quite noticeable and its almost as if you are getting two rums for the price of one! The finish is almost like a bourbon. Which if you like bourbon as i do is far from being a problem. Dead Reckoning PX Barbados has a really long and really nice mellow finish which I really appreciate. The spiciness of the mid palate/early finish really fade out and mellow leading to a very nice ending. Touches of leather, toffee and cigar smoke. I will say (and this is without trying every Indie bottling)_ that I do think Justin at Dead Reckoning rum is perhaps producing rums that are the closest in terms of profile as Foursquare’s own Exceptional Cask Series. Most bottlers tend to stick with tried and trusted ex-bourbon casks only. Another absolute belter of a rum! - thefatrumpirate.com

Notes from the bottlers... Nose: Butterscotch, caramel, toffee, apple plums, raisins, and figs. Palate: Unmistakable, foursquare flavour, butterscotch, toffee, apple pan melted Demerara sugar, topped with ripe and ready, raisins and figs, a hint of walnut. Finish: Nice and bold. Easily long enough to chat about it with your drinking buddy. Lots of stewed fruit, caramel, vanilla and a lingering spice that really warms.

Dictador's premium offering is distilled partly in copper pot alembics and partly in steel continuous column stills before being aged in a solera system. It's noteworthy that the oldest part of the blend is 20 years old - not the youngest. Tasting the 12 and 20 year old releases side by side, the younger version showed more aromatic personality and better overall length. It will be a question of personal preference as both are nicely balanced examples worthy of a rum lover's attention. In this expression, the bouquet opens with soft, sensuous notes of sticky date pudding, brown sugar and creme caramel with a sense of freshness retained. If you haven't been inspired to try the aged rums of the Caribbean then you’ve got a lot to look forward to. This applies not only to those who’ve never moved beyond Bundaberg and Coke since high school, but more so to those who are serious about wine, whisky and brandy - in short, those of us who are passionate about ‘flavour’. Quality Caribbean rum has as many permutations of aromas, tastes, textures and strengths as any group of wines or spirits. The rum market in Australia has increased exponentially and the overall quality is superb. We now have access to many small and large producers who are vying for attention and the very reasonable prices mean rum is not just a passing fad.

Aside from the familiar Caribbean island groups, more and more people are becoming aware of a ‘mainland’ rum tradition. Think Nicaragua, Gautemala, Panama or Venezuela. The latter, already famous as the spiritual home of the rum based medicinal bitters, Angostura, is now finding its rums eclipsing that legacy. The country has a number of highly regarded offerings, but those from the Distilerias Unidas in La Miel on the northern slopes of the Andes lift the bar highest.
Their Diplomatico label is the international reference.

We prefer to let what’s inside the bottle do the talking, but it is impossible to overlook this venture’s remarkable accumulation of twenty plus international awards since 2007 (54 medals in contests worldwide), including the SIP Awards, San Francisco World Spirits Competition, Miami Rum XP, Monde Selection and other big guns. Even if the show circuit is irrelevant to you, a different kind of achievement came in October 2011 when the company’s Maestro, Tito Cordero, was honoured at the Golden Rum Barrels Awards as the World’s Best Master Blender. He was the first Venezuelan to receive the award. Given that so much depends on how the distiller and blender create their product, this was the rum world's supreme commendation of Cordero's skill and outright quality fanaticism.

A reinvigorated project that stemmed from an early Seagrams investment in the 1950s, passed on to Diageo, and is now in the custody of the Ballesteros family, the distillery is adjacent to the Hacienda Saruro, where much of the sugar cane is grown. Average daytime temperatures of 30-31C drop by 6-7C at night, a differential which when coupled with high humidity benefits cane growth: it concentrates the sugars and favours the ageing process. Different varieties are grown to make sugar honey and molasses. Molasses is preferred for the light rums, sugar cane honey for the heavy. While many producers are struggling to get molasses with a sugar content above 45%, Diplomatico are ahead of the pack before they even begin. Venezuela regularly achieves upwards of 60%.

Not unlike other distilleries, here pot stills are for richness and weight, column stills for adding freshness and elegance. Between the two are batch kettles that carry out secondary distillations of semi-heavy rums. Varying proportions of each create a hierarchy of styles. Barrel regimes vary, including ex-bourbon with some re-filled single malt whisky casks. Sherry casks are now being experimented with to great effect, as the 2000 Vintage release bears testimony. Finishing departs from the mainstream, as most Diplomatico rums are given only a delicate filtration prior to bottling - gentle enough to maintain fatty acids and maximum mouthfeel - then filtered using 3 micron-thick filter pads. It is minimal interference by world standards, Cordero considering it a formality to ensure the rums retain their clarity and brilliance when exported to cooler climates.

Diplomatico's flagship cuvee is aged for up to twelve years and typically blended from around 80% pot still rums; the remaining 20% are lighter styles from column stills. Cordero mixes a little cane sugar prior to blending which is another reason why the flavour seems amplified compared to some others in the stable. Stylistically this edges Ron Zacapa 23 for satisfaction and sheer saturation and is the one that many of our customers measure other rums by. Those whose taste preferences tend towards the savory may misunderstand what is an unashamedly dessert / quasi- liqueur styled effort that falls into a sub-category of its own. Almost as decadent as a rum can get without cloying the mouth and falling out of balance - there are more complex rums around, but not near this price, nor do they have the same uncanny ability to incite superlatives. The packaging depicts Don Juancho Nieto Melendez, who was a noted rum enthusiast in the town close to the distillery. It's reported that, being something of a globe trotter, over many years "...he amassed a large collection of rums which he took great pleasure in offering his guests at the lavish dinner parties he held at his house."

Tasting note: Brilliant copper with a gold hue. Heady and decadent scents of creme caramel, fresh coffee, chocolate fudge, vanilla and spice. A silky, creamy mouthfeel yields a plush array of dried fruits, raisins and coffee-caramel, counterpointed by a gently warming spirit heat. Perfect balance, seamless integration. Very long, mouth coating aftertaste of vanilla and liquorice strap with a subtle dark chocolate finale. Avoids the too sweet trap. A stunning rum that will instantly convert many a Muscat or PX Sherry drinker. This remains one of the most re-purchased spirits on our shelves. 40% Alc./Vol.

It’s no big secret that the prices of Burgundy have skyrocketed in recent years and whilst the wines from Chablis haven’t risen quite as steeply it’s becoming increasingly difficult to even locate sub $50 Petit Chablis. So a $60 Premier Cru Chablis that delivers exceptional quality is indeed a rare find these days.
Francis Boudin is the third-generation vigneron at Chantemerle and the estate firmly falls in the traditional mould - he despises oak. As the story goes, his grandfather was a cooper and with so much exposure to oak during his formative years he banished it from the family cellars opting for concrete and steel alone.
Old vine material is the key to the estate’s success. While many in the region during the 1970's were re-planting vineyards to high-yielding material the Boudins were planting with naturally low-yielding vines. Along with careful vineyard management, an informed but gentle touch in the winery and judicious lees work to bring out flesh and texture, Boudin produces supple wines, that speak of place clearly layered with Chablis' prized minerality.

A beautifully shaped and intensely flavoured Premier Cru Chablis that delivers phenomenal value.

Brilliant pale straw colour with subtle flecks of green to the edges and a watery hue. Enticing pear and lime scents jump out of the glass intermixing with wet stone, faint dried honey, oyster shell and mineral notes along the way. Their holding has now grown to around 14 hectares that captures some of the best parcels in Marsannay. Cyril is increasingly focused on vineyard health, to deliver wines with pure varietal expression and a sense of place. They are among the most serious wines from the area, and while juicy and approachable young, have the capacity to age gracefully for many years.

An incredibly moreish Rose that’s impossible to resist.

Brilliant salmon pink colour with delightful scents of red cherry, peach and raspberry streaming out of the glass. Hints of rose petals, musk and wet stone adding further interest. Uber delicious, the moreish palate features raspberry, peach and pomegranate fruits which are delivered with fantastic intensity. This youthful rosé Burgundy has stacks of nectarine and peach with just a touch of fresh cranberry aroma. Medium-bodied and properly dry it has spot-on balance of fruit and lively acidity with a touch of spice at the very straight finish. Made from all this producer’s young vineyards. Makes you wonder why other producers don’t do the same! Drink now.

Cyril Audoin has turned in another superb performance in the 2020 vintage, delivering wines of perfume, energy and precision that transcend stereotypes of their appellation. Marsannay nourishes a number of high-quality domaines, and the village offers rich pickings for wine lovers, but Audoin might well be my favorite. What's more, anyone who laments rising prices in the Côte d'Or should take note of the terrific value this estate's wines represent, because quality at this level should honestly cost quite a bit more.
The 2020 Marsannay Clos du Roy Blanc is brilliant, revealing aromas of pear, lime zest, freshly baked bread, white flowers and buttery pastry. Medium to full-bodied, ample and satiny, its textural attack segues into a chiseled, electric mid-palate, concluding with a long, tangy finish. Drink 2023-2035.

A subtle dollop of wood is present on the citrus zest, green apple and floral-suffused nose. The wood can also be found on the palate of the medium-bodied flavors that exhibit good minerality on the youthfully austere, linear and bone-dry finale. Drink to 2024+.

Domaine Clarendon is the ambitious project of Clarendon Hills winemaker Roman Bratasiuk and his son Alex. Planted in 2006 using Astralis cuttings the vineyard is dry grown with yields at less than 1 tonne per acre. The vineyards soil structure is solid rock (the vineyard cultivator broke two 'industrial-as' Caterpillar row rippers on rocks the size of houses) and it is located 315 metres above sea level - the highest altitude vineyard in Clarendon and also McLaren Vale.

A superb Syrah that boasts formidable concentration, power and structure.

Sourced directly from the winery this museum release delivers outstanding value when one considers the bottle age behind it and the fact that the current vintage (2020) is selling for $32.99. A no brainer buy if you like rich, robust reds.
Exceptional colour for a Syrah with 12 years bottle age behind it displaying an impenetrable inky black heart along with an equally deep dark red black hue. Engulfing the olfactory senses are potent aromas of ripe blackberry, liquorice and black cherry which intermix with some vanillin cedar, traces of dark chocolate and peppered earth notes. Boasting magnificent density, power and depth of fruit along with a firm structure, the bold, weighty palate is well and truly alive and kicking. Rich, opulent blackberry, liquorice and black cherry fruits are backed by muscular tannins which assert their presence, imparting a grippy feel onto the back half. Vanillin cedar, earth and blackpepper characters linger through the long, densely fruited yet robust finish.

Concentrated and gorgeously shaped with brisk acidity and a saline like minerality.

Located in the north-west sector of Chablis in the village of Maligny, Pierrick Laroche runs this family estate which was established by his father in the 1970s. After getting a degree in oenology from Beaune, Patrick travelled the world, doing various internships to gain experience before returning home to start making wine and take over the family vineyards for himself. In 2010 he ceased selling grapes to the local co-operative and produced his first vintage to great acclaim.
The domain has nearly 12ha of Petit Chablis, classified as such because the limestone tends to be the younger Portlandian rather than the older Kimmeridgian, and as such typically occupies higher sites (Portlandian overlies Kimmeridgian) and has less clay. Pierrick is convinced that his largest parcel of Petit really ought to be classed as Chablis; it makes wine like Chablis and indeed is surrounded by AOC Chablis vines.
Brilliant pale straw colour with a faint greenish tinge around the outskirts and a watery hue. Attractive pear and lime scents laced with wet stone and an oyster shell like minerality drift through the nostrils with ample volume. Domaine du Pegau Reserve is produced from 85% Grenache, 9% Syrah and 4% Mourvedre, Counoise and other varieties. While previously Cuvee Laurence was made from a specific barrel selection, today the wine is same blend as the Reserve except it has been aged in barrel for a longer period of time. The grapes are not destemmed, and the natural yeast fermentation is completed in traditional, cement vats before ageing in old, French oak barrels for an average of 40 months.
According to Laurence Feraud, the wine is aged to approximate what might happen with Pegau Reserve after ten years of aging. On average, close to 650 cases are produced each vintage of Domaine du Pegau Cuvee Laurence.
Black as night heart with a deep dark red black tinged hue. Wafting out of the glass are ripe heady scents of black raspberry, liquorice, blackberry and black cherry which meld into scorched earth, dried meats, hints of leather and pepper. Rich black cherry, liquorice and black raspberry fruits are backed by a muscular tannin structure. Notions of scorched earth, leather and peppered dried meats add a further nuance to the back palate. I loved the 2017 Châteauneuf Du Pape Cuvée Laurence. It has a more classic style in its Provençal aromas and flavors of peppery herbs, garrigue, sandalwood, and charcuterie, with medium to full-bodied richness and depth on the palate. It’s a classic, complex, gorgeous wine in the making.

Based in Ligny-les-Chatel on the northern fringe of the Chablis appellation, Domaine Garnier & Fils has been family owned since 1789 with brothers Jerome and Xavier Garnier currently overseeing the winemaking and management. Jerome works the vineyards, while Xavier makes the wines, and together they are leading a group of newer producers finding their voice in the northern most part of Chablis. Organic farming is practiced in the vineyards, and fermentation occurs with natural yeasts before the wines are matured in a mix of very large barrels and stainless steel tanks.
Brilliant pale straw colour with a subtle tinge of green around the edges and a watery hue. Intense pear and lime aromas carry with them an oyster shell like minerality followed by some delicate dried honey and wet stone notes. A touch fuller and rounder than the Fourchaume and Mont de Milieu yet still retaining good underlying minerality, it features a concentrated flavour profile of fleshy pear and lime fruits which meld into a stony mineral infused back drop.
