Stacks of spice, dried Mediterranean herbs and a touch of leather on the nose. Bold, structured and lively, this is an impressive wine for the humble appellation. Long harmonious finish with good complexity. A cuvee of grenache, syrah and carignan from vines that are over 50-years-old. Drink or hold.

So much spice is the first impression here, this blended expression is well established as a powerful and complex style of pinot. Fresh red-cherry, potpourri, orange-peel, dried-flower, pomegranate and red and dark-cherry aromas, to name a few. The palate has such concentrated and layered style with dense red-cherry, blueberry and black-cherry flavors, delivered in a seamless build that holds so long. Impressive quality here. Drink or hold.

In the class system of Australian rosé, I reckon Ben Portet is at worst a viscount, possibly a prince. Just saying. Clear glass bottles for rosato are probably not ideal, but I accept that people need to see the colour for their money.
Good wine, and invariably good and tasty is the rosato from Portet. Redcurrant, strawberry, a little aniseed and dried rose perfume. Crisp, a little milky in texture, with blood orange tang, smooth yet sappy, and a little bit savoury and nutty. It’s always a good drink, and same again in 2022. Excellent. Fresh and tasty, a little truffle/earthiness too. Drink 2022-2024.

Established in 1982, Dromana Estate was one of the early pioneers to recognise the potential of the Mornington Peninsula. Their Tuerong Park label are single vineyard wines produced from selected parcels of fruit and offer great bang for your buck.

Beautifully layered, long and expansive this is one very moreish Mornington Peninsula Pinot Noir.

The almost perfect growing and ripening conditions of the 2021 vintage have delivered a superb rendition of Mornington Peninsula Pinot Noir. Maturation took place in French oak puncheons and foudre for a period of 8 months.

An estate blend of cabernet and shiraz. There's nothing that the human combination of Duke Ranson in and around the vineyard and the skills of winemaker Robert Diletti can't achieve. The breathless flavours, structure and texture of this striking blend are, quite simply, superb. Glistening black cherries, satsuma plum and finely wrought tannins are all on parade. Drink by 2043.

Dune is a project of brothers Duncan and Peter Lloyd (next generation Coriole) using fruit sourced from their vineyard in the Blewitt Springs sub-region of McLaren Vale. Blewitt Springs is known for deep sandy soils on yellow clays where Shiraz typically ripens later than other parts of McLaren Vale. It typically produces Shiraz of lifted dark fruit, floral and meaty notes, the tannin is fine yet chalky and the wines are often medium bodied rather than full.

Impressively rich, concentrated and fleshy yet not heavy, this is a power packed McLaren Vale Shiraz that delivers great value.

Matured in seasoned oak for 12 months. Impenetrable inky black heart with a deep dark red black hue. Unfurling from the glass with plenty of intensity are aromatics of black cherry, liquorice and dark plum which are interwoven with vanillin cedar, scorched earth and peppered meat notes. Rich and fleshy yet not over weight the seductive palate is blessed with succulent black cherry and liquorice fruits. Scorched earth, dark plum, subtle vanillin cedar and peppered meat characters ensue. Velvety yet slightly chewy tannins finishing long, lush and peppery.

Uses a mixture of whole bunch, whole berry and crushed fruit, matured in used oak for 12 months. Deeply coloured; full, rich flavours of velvety black cherry, blackberry and spice all-sorts, with tannins so round they disappear in the black fruits. Oh-so-easy to swallow if that wasn’t forbidden. Drink to 2035.

I had an old Ford Escort once that blew its springs. I’ll fetch my coat.
Perfumed, nutty, meaty, black fruit. Medium to full-bodied, again quite umami with some nori flavour, choc-hazelnut and juicy dark cherry, dry spice, fleshy and creamy tannin, good length with it. Quite ferrous, but also floral. Lovely wine. I often ponder the absurdity of assigning scores to wines, so this is either 93 or 94 points. I can’t quite decide. Drink 2023-2030.

Shiraz, Grenache, Mataro with a little Touriga Nacional.
Plum, blueberry, sage and aniseed, spice and dried flowers. It’s medium-bodied, something of a Dutch liquorice character, also ferrous, inky and earthy, fine silty cocoa tannin, and a satisfying finish of excellent length. I love the grip and savoury complexity. Very good. Drink 2023-2028.

Epsilon is the project of Aaron and Julie Southern (Julie is a member of the Kalleske clan) who own vineyards in the Northern part of Barossa. As the familiar story goes with so many growers they sold off their fruit to larger wineries until a chance meeting with the Massena boys Dan Standish and Jaysen Collins. Under their guidance they convinced them to start up their own brand in 2004 and build a winery on the property. Maturation takes place for approximately 12 months in seasoned French oak hogsheads with only the best batches making the final blend.

Still a touch reticent the nose slowly opens to reveal alluring liquorice and confectionary scents which meld into a mix of morello cherry, well integrated spirit and spice notes. Rich, luscious morello cherry and liquorice flavours are backed by rugged, muscly tannins which lend firmness and structure for the long haul. Marzipan, infusions of vanilla and spice ensue. Exceptionally intense and powerful it finishes long, dense and robust.

The 2017 Vintage Port, not quite bottled when seen but the final blend, is a field blend (with typical grapes like Touriga Nacional, Touriga Francesca, Tinto Cão, Tinta Roriz and Tinta Barroca) aged for approximately 20 months in used French oak. It comes in with 98 grams of residual sugar, a little drier on paper than its Taylor sibling this year. Sappy and sensational in flavor and fruit, this seemingly has moderate tannins around the edges on first taste, velvety texture and a long finish. Despite the first impression of moderation, there is plenty of power here. As it got some aeration, it showed nothing but power and closed down fairly hard. The combination of great fruit and fine structure makes this a potentially great Fonseca, but right now it is obviously immature and not showing everything it has. I'd recommend some patience here.

Mark Squires - Wine Advocate (July 2019)

Picking began at Quinta do Panascal on September 6, the two other quintas in Pinhão that form the 2017 Fonseca Vintage Port, Cruzeiro and Santo António picked on 10 and 17 September respectively. One of the deepest, most opaque color amongst the new Port alumni, it has one of the most backward, almost recalcitrant noses that demands a lot of aeration. It gradually opens to reveal blackberry, melted tar, thyme, clove and violet aromas that are well defined, if maybe just missing the same breeding as Taylor’s. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin. This is fresh and detailed, a slightly more structured Fonseca than expected, quite strict at first with good grip and a lightly spiced, precise finish. Powerful and long on the aftertaste, you can feel this Fonseca 60 seconds after the wine has exited. It deserves 10-15 years in bottle. Excellent, but patience required. The most enigmatic of the 2017 Vintage Ports. Total production is 8,100 cases.

Dark and dense, with fig bread, baker's chocolate and tar notes leading off before the core flavors of plum, black currant and blackberry paste finally start to emerge. The wild, spirited finish shows cast iron, licorice snap and roasted alder elements, delivering a decidedly chewy feel. A big, old-school, throwback Port that will age at a glacial pace. Best from 2035 through 2060.

The wine's fine perfumed black plum fruits give a wonderful jammy character while bringing out a fresh edge. These are balanced by the dry core of this beautiful wine with its rich, generous tannins. It will all come together from 2030 in a very fine, integrated wine.

Already beautifully integrated, this is showing great purity and poise. It's open and in its first bloom of youth, with lovely aromatic red berry fruit and floral aromas, plus a touch of leafiness. It's soft and fleshy initially, seemingly not as big as its stablemate Taylor's - and not quite so deep in colour - though with dark chocolate concentration and mid-palate firmness. Lovely full, ripe tannins mass in the mouth, well defined, with fresh berry fruit remerging on the broad, expansive finish.

Deepest purple. Wild, perfectly ripe small black berries like elderberry but also the lush sweetness of ripe blackberries plus a stony, rocky edge and just a touch charry. Lush, plush and exotic on the palate, deep-pile, compact, smooth tannins, just enough freshness to balance the rich generosity. The finish is beautifully dry-tasting, the tannins melting on the long finish.

A young negociant based in the Rhone Valley, François Arnaud Dauvergne established his outfit in 2004. From his time spent working at other wineries he become convinced that the key to success was to establish a strong relationship with his growers. An even split of upper and lower Yarra fruit. Whole-bunched pressed and wild fermented in 15% new French puncheons. Around 5% mlf. A light, bright green gold. Pure fruited with an attractive nose of just ripened orchard and stone fruits, pink grapefruit and orange blossom. A hint of matchstick and just-baked ginger snaps. If you ever wondered what the fuss over Glenfarclas' Family casks was all about but couldn't afford to find out, don't hesitate to start here. As much as we'd like to imagine that this whisky will be enjoyed amongst friends, it has all the hallmarks of a collectable: a tiny outturn from a distillery with pedigree, first-rate liquid and a bespoke label. You might drink one and try to keep the other, but our bet is the second bottle is going to prove too tempting. In fact, you could not do much better from any of the distillery's neighbours at this age: Cask #51 buries young Macallan or Glendronach and is almost dripping with sherry, kicking off with juicy dried apricots, dried prunes, raisin cake and cinnamon over hints of chocolate oranges in a caramel setting, wrapped up in a mid palate succulence that's pure and sustained while showing extraordinary balance and mouthfeel. The malt and sherry sweetness gently bitters as the sugars wear off and spices enter. Add water, and the entire profile remains beautifully defined. It's young Speyside malt showing off in an audacious fashion that sets it apart from Glenfarclas' official releases. Distilled in 2014 and filled into a first-fill Sherry hogshead before decanting in November 2022, 160 bottles are available for those fortunate enough to get their hands on one. Anybody who knows about 'AREA 51' from UFO folklore will understand the cryptic label reference - an alien is jealously guarding a cask (word has got around, Glenfarclas make some of the best whisky in the galaxy!) 59.8% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

Ranked No. 10 in Wine Spectators Top 100 wines of 2023

Greywacke is the Marlborough label of former Cloudy Bay winemaker Kevin Judd, where he presided over that company’s first 25 vintages establishing the reputation that it has today. The name Greywacke was adopted by Kevin and his wife Kimberley for their first Marlborough vineyard in Rapaura, named in recognition of the high prevalence of rounded greywacke river stones in the soils of the vineyard. Kevin registered the name back in 1992 with the vague notion that he might one day want to use it on a wine label of his own.
Fruit was sourced from various prime vineyard sites in Marlborough’s Southern Valleys and the central Wairau Plains with a portion of the juice fermented in old oak barrels. Brilliant water like coloured core with a greenish tinged outskirts. Jumping out of the glass are pungent aromas of passionfruit, gooseberry and lime followed by some green apple, herbaceous grassy characters and mineral notes. On the palate mouth watering passionfruit, gooseberry, green apple and lime fruits are delivered with superb concentration and drive. Subtle herbaceous grassy and mineral characters lurk underneath. Excellent textural feel finishing dry with crisp acidity and a long scrumptious aftertaste.

Always a delicious and alluring wine, Henry’s Seven is a blend of Shiraz, Grenache, Mataro and Viognier from the Barossa (72%, 15%, 11% and just a dollop of 2% for the Viognier, respectively). The Viognier is co-fermented with Shiraz, while the Grenache and Mataro are fermented separately. The wine is matured in seasoned French oak for eight months. A vibrant magenta hue, we have aromas of chocolate, dried herbs, tobacco leaves, spices, a touch of mocha and cassis. Showing a seamless, seductive texture, there is bright acidity and good length, finishing with slightly chalky tannins. With good focus and balance throughout, this is delicious now and will be over the next five to eight years, longer in good cellars over which time has the potential to improve on this score. The beautify of the season is captured wonderfully in this excellent blend of shiraz, grenache, mataro and a tony amount of viognier. Bright high energy red fruits with a spicy lift on the finish. Its more in the medium bodied zone but it certainly packs plenty of palate intensity delivered with a degree of finesse largely as a result of the subtle use of seasoned oak. This is a wine that has moved from its early iterations to one of more sophistication and poise.

The Weber family of Hofgut Falkenstein have been making ultra-traditional Rieslings in the Saar district of the Mosel region since the mid-eighties; there they farm about 9 hectares in and around the villages of Niedermennig and Krettnach. Erich, the family winzer (winegrower in german) works alongside his middle son Johannes, who has joined him full-time in the vineyards and cellar in recent years. Ever since there has been more of a focus on Rieslings with residual sugar. The emphasis on their work is in the vineyard, where no pesticides, herbicides or fertilizers are employed and cover crops are grown to encourage biodiversity and, when necessary, competition with the vines for water.
Through a straightforward approach to winemaking the Weber craft light, distinctive and racy Rieslings, with well-integrated acidity from low yields and old vines, and bottled traditionally by the cask.

The 2021er Niedermennig Herrenberg Riesling Spätlese Feinherb Palm (the reference to this internal cask name is provided in small print on the label after the AP number) comes from different small parcels on the western side of the vineyard and was fermented down to off-dry levels of residual sugar (27 g/l). It offers a superb nose of mirabelle, herbs, white peach, and spices. The wine proves stunningly racy yet creamy on the palate and leaves a stunning feel of wet stone, herbs, anise, peach, and smoky elements. The finish is absolutely stunning and persistent. Drink 2029-2041.

A Girvan approaching peak maturity. All the usual suspects are present - heady vanillas, caramels, hints of bourbon and gold rum, but the sugars are checked by herbal teas (chamomile) and hints of green apples. Tasted after ample air contact, the palate softens and richens up like a fat, buttery Chardonnay. If sweet grains are your thing, this turns out to be a classically lush and well-rounded expression, right through to the fine-tuned sweet/dry ending that finishes like a great wine. 52.9% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered. 107 bottles from an ex-Bourbon hogshead.

Vivacious when young though often variable, some of these 'less ripe' Auchentoshans come with a minerally, white pepper edge that's also grassy. Here the sweetness is teased out as green apples and green grapes before turning herbal-tea like with hints of bergamot. Otherwise, a remarkably easygoing Auchentoshan, graceful, building with a creamy, malty crescendo complexed by hints of granny smiths peels, lemon zest, cocoa and rolling tobacco. Round, crisp, well balanced and one of the tastiest Auchentoshans to date. 56% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered. 297 bottles. Bourbon cask matured.

Champagne Hugues Godmé are based in the Grand Cru village of Verzenay in the northern Montagne de Reims, where they farm a total of 7.6 hectares of vines spread across four villages. Their Pinot Noir is sourced from the Grand Cru village pair of Verzenay and Verzy, while much of their Chardonnay is in Villers Marmery, and the Pinot Meunier a touch west in Ville-Dommange. Hugues has long been concerned with the health of his vineyards (along with himself), and made the transition to organic farming in 2006 with certification coming in 2013, followed a year later with biodynamic certification in 2014. Each parcel is vinified separately and dependant on the terroir will have fermentation occur in neutral oak or enamel lined cement tanks, all using native yeasts. Across the range dosage is kept very low, with many wines now bottled as brut nature (zero dosage). As to be expected with wines from Verzenay and Verzy, these Champagnes are sleek and structured, tightly coiled in their youth but with fantastic concentration of fruit.
The Reserve is a blend of 34% Pinot Noir, 33% Chardonnay and 33% Pinot Meunier that has spent 2 years on lees. A mousse overflowing with exuberance subsides to reveal a pale straw coloured base that has pale gold tinged edges. An exceptionally fine bead shows great persistence. Delightful pear and strawberry aromas are complimented by yeast lees, baked bread, faint honeysuckle and delicate oily cashew like notes. The refined palate makes a satin like entry with mouth watering flavours of pear, yeast lees, citrus and baked bread melding into more subtle nuances of strawberry and roasted cashew on the back half. Airy cream tinged mouth feel finishing dry with vividly sculptured acidity and a long complex aftertaste.

A full display of marsanne's strengths from the utter delight of lifted wildflower, jasmine, stone fruit and citrus aromas and flavours to a warm textural mouthfeel and a finish that lasts long. Oak lends a guiding hand in delivering a nougat creaminess and emphasising middle-palate flavour and complexity. Lots to like and enjoy here. Drink by 2027.

Based in a small village on the northern right bank of the Rhone, the Chave family have been growing vines on the famous Hermitage hill since 1481. Shimmering ruby color. Lively red and blue fruit and floral aromas are sharpened by a spicy suggestion of white pepper. Juicy and broad on the palate, offering appealingly sweet black raspberry and boysenberry flavors that become firmer on the back half. Supple, even tannins shape the finely etched, clinging finish, which leaves a suave floral note behind. Drink 2022-2027.

The fruit for this wine is sourced from a single vineyard located in the Barossa Valley sub region of Greenock. Ben Jeanneret calls this curiously named wine 'Rank & File'. It's what Shiraz represents to him - the heart and soul of the Australian wine industry. Sourced from some of the best low yielding, old vine vineyards in Clare, the fruit for this wine was matured in a mixture of French and American oak for a period of 17-23 months. Year in year out this is one of our best selling Shiraz, the powerful rich black fruits and opulent feel make it irresistible drinking.

A super rich Clare Shiraz layered with a dense wall of lavish fruit that’s underscored by a muscular structure.

Wafting from the glass are liquorice, black cherry liqueur like aromas and blackberry which meld into toasty vanillin cedar and peppered earth notes. Jim Barry’s love affair with the Assyrtiko began in 2006 whilst on holiday on the Greek Island of Santorini, the birthplace of the variety. Its crisp acidity reminded him of Clare Valley Riesling yet it had a unique flavour profile that he had not experienced before. Intrigued, he began the process of importing cuttings and by 2012 had planted Australia’s first Assyrtiko vineyard.
Brilliant water like colour with a greenish tinged outskirts. Pear and lime scents jump out of the glass trailed by green apple, wet stone and subtle fresh herb notes. Highly energised in its feel, crunchy pear, green apple and lime fruits decorate the scrumptious palate with delicate infusions of fresh herbs and stony mineral characters lurking underneath. Crisp acidity provides tension and focus to the long electric finish.

Well, this is the seventh vintage of this wine we’ve reviewed, and I think it’s getting better and better. Seems I’ve been the Assyriko Man (I could make a Seinfeld reference, but won’t, because I’m not The Assman!) for the most part, with MB chiming in once. We now wait for CM or KS to review the next vintage. Anyway, this is just the ticket for a 35c September day in Sydney.
Lots of crunch, plenty of bite. It’s frisky, lemon zest, green apple and aromatic herbs, a little fennel. Texture is excellent, along with fresh thirst-slaking quinine-laced dryness, and a juicy/dry finish of excellent length. Very good. Energetic. Delicious. 2023 - 2026+

It's a light and lean white wine, energetic and vivid in its delicate yet nuanced expression. Cucumber, tonic water, lemon juice and talc-like mineral characters with alpine herb elements in play. Attractive, powdery dry texture with a briny, minerally element assisting. A statement wine with intent for warm days and beach-side drinking. Really well done, and kudos due for the pioneering with the variety in Australia. Drink by 2027.
