Previously labelled as Brut Reserve, the team at Billecart, have made a number of quality improvements to the core elements of this Cuvee and have rebranded it ‘Le Reserve’. The key changes being as follows:-

- Reduced dosage (extra brut, 3g/l) for greater purity and expression of terroir.
- More depth with 15 different vintages in the bottle
- Larger proportion of wines vinified in barrels, adding richness and density.

A rich, mouthfilling yet tense and stimulating Champagne that delivers remarkable complexity for the price.

A blend of 43% Meunier, 29% Chardonnay and 28% Pinot Noir with over 50% reserve wines included in the blend. A buoyant, satiny mousse floats over a pale straw to straw coloured base that has pale gold tinged edges. Fine, nimble bead with alluring aromas of baked bread, yeast lees, oily toast, citrus and brioche wafting through the nostrils. Rich and mouth filling yet simultaneously tense and stimulating, the palate is laden with baked bread, yeast lees and citrus flavours which sit over an oily toast and almond back drop. Crisp acidity finishing very dry, long and remarkably complex for a house non vintage cuvee. A definite step up on its previous incarnation.

'Cuesta' is a brand owned by the prestigious Sherry house, 'Lustau', produced and bottled from a selection of butts in the Lustau Bodega. The concept is to offer high quality sherries under a separate brand in markets where Lustau is already represented. Yet given the exceptional standard set by the Cuesta PX, one has to wonder whether they've shot themselves in the foot. Aged for a minimum of ten years, this superb solera is produced from sun dried Pedro Ximenez grapes.

A seriously good example of PX and an absolute steal at this direct import price.

Pours a viscous sienna brown colour with a deep green olive tinged hue. Potent scents of raisins, honey and Christmas cake engulfs the nostrils with hints of toffee, marmalade and walnut also present. Exceptionally concentrated and rich, a thick luscious dollop of raisin, honey and Christmas cake like flavours are draped across the palate with notions of marmalade, toffee and subtle dried nuts the back drop. Warm, mellow spirit with an oil like consistency to the mouthfeel. Long sweet, textured aftertaste. An ideal match with vanilla ice cream and Christmas pudding.

A blend of 60% Pinot Noir and 40% Chardonnay sourced from 11 different crus, mainly Ay and Verzenay for the Pinot Noir whilst for the Chardonnay Chouilly and Avize. Fermented entirely in aged oak barrels.
Pours with a fine satiny mousse which sits over a pale straw to straw coloured base that has gold tinged edges and a fine, energetic bead flowing through it. Heady aromatics of baked bread, oily toast like characters and yeast lees waft through the nostrils, seamlessly integrating with notions of brioche, subtle honeyed almond and citrus notes. Rich, voluminous and full across the palate yet remarkably fresh and energetic, mouth filling flavours of pear, baked bread and oily toast like elements are shaped by vivid acidity. Flashes of citrus, cashew and chalky mineral accents linger across the back half. Concludes long, expansive and satiny with a buttered toast element to the finish.

Bollinger's 2015 Brut Grand Année is an intriguing wine in that is clearly reflects the decision to pick on the later side in order to avoid vegetal notes derived from the mismatch of alcoholic and phenolic ripeness. "Balance was hard to achieve in 2015," Chef de Cave Denis Bunner notes. "At 10% in sugar, the fruit was simply not ripe. We had to wait to reach the optimal window of ripeness." Bunner also opted to increase the Chardonnay, so the blend is 60% Pinot Noir and 40% Chardonnay, as opposed to the more typical 70/30 blend, with more Verzenay than Aÿ in the Pinots. Dried citrus peel, sage, menthol, sage, tangerine peel and spice build with some coaxing. Light tropical overtones develop with aeration. There's real density and textural richness here. This will be a fascinating vintage to follow. Stylistically, it is the complete opposite from the much more linear 2014 that precedes it. Dosage is 8 grams per liter.

This expressive Champagne features a rich, well-spiced range of flavors chiseled by well-honed, integrated acidity, which lends a racy feel to the ripe black cherry and mulberry fruit and notes of salted almond, pink grapefruit granita, crystallized honey and pickled ginger that ride the raw silk–like mousse. The 2015 Brut La Grande Année was disgorged last year with eight grams per liter dosage. The wine has turned out beautifully, exhibiting a more muscular, old-school Bollinger profile in contrast to the unusually racy, fine-boned 2014 that preceded it. Wafting from the glass with notes of pear, orange oil and white flowers mingled with notions of mocha, toasted hazelnuts and fino sherry, it's medium to full-bodied, layered and textural, with a dense core of fruit framed by chalky structuring extract, concluding with a long, sapid finish. A forward vintage for La Grande Année, with warmth evident in its roasted orange, Comice pear and Mirabelle plum, all polished with a sense of savoury maturity that is very Bollinger at heart. There’s a little more oxygen influence seemingly at play than in the 2014, with brine, nuts and a little dried leaf character already taking this far beyond fruit. The food-friendly chewiness of 2015 is there, but the mousse is supple and the Chardonnay brings the wine to a close with a fine, cooked lemon snap. This will start to show its best integration from 2025 onwards, although it is open for business now. 60% Pinot Noir and 40% Chardonnay from the Montagne de Reims, Grande Vallée de la Marne and Côte des Blancs, all fermented in small oak barrels and disgorged in May 2023 after seven years on lees. Drink 2025 - 2034.

A rich though youthful golden hue, the NV Champagne Special Cuvée Brut is classic and ripe with lush, rounded, and complex aromas of golden apricot, hazelnut, wet stone, and black cherry. Made with 45% of the wine coming from the 2019 vintage, with 55% reserve wine, it’s full-bodied yet elegant and light on its feet, with a ripe and luxurious feel and just a hint of warmth on the finish. The mousse is refined and rounded. Long on the palate, it's inviting now but will have plenty of life ahead of it if stored property. This exceptional cuvée with its distinctive personality continues to be one of the best entry wines to the range from this house and is a benchmark wine for them.

Violet Hour is a blend of fruit from 10 blocks in Bondar’s Rayner vineyard, one of McLaren Vale’s better known vineyards. Each block has a different aspect, and soils range from deep sand with ironstone rocks to clay over limestone. The Shiraz vines are some of the oldest on the property, reaching 70 years in some blocks. Whole bunch and destemmed fruit is used, and the juice spends varying times on skins, depending on the block. The wine sees only seasoned oak, usually for a period of around 10 months.

A sumptuous, medium bodied McLaren Vale Shiraz that features rich, plush blue to black fruits.

Impenetrable inky black heart with a deep dark red black tinged hue. The wildly fragrant nose features dark plum, liquorice and ripe blueberry scents intermixed with dried herbs, fennel, scorched earth and pepper. Rich, plush liquorice, dark plum and black cherry fruits decorate the medium bodied palate with ripe blueberry, dried herb, earth and peppered fennel elements also chiming in to add further interest. Velvety yet structural tannins with a long, polished finish that makes for sumptuous drinking.

Andre Bondar and Selina Kelly approach McLaren Vale shiraz like young renovators who’ve just inherited an old mansion from an eccentric old aunt. What was once dark has had the light let in, abundant artifacts and ornate over-stuffing replaced with cleaner lines and more open space. It’s still the beautiful place it always was, but is now more appealing to a contemporary market. If you’ve always loved McLaren Vale shiraz, you’ll still be happy here, and if you didn’t think it was for you, you’ll be surprised by how quickly you feel at home.

Full of flavour, mouth watering and possessing an airy feel, this is one of the best value Sparklings going around.
Outside of Champagne, Bouvet is the most awarded Sparkling Wine House in France, garnering high praise from critics like Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, Decanter Magazine, James Suckling and many others. After many years of ownership by Champagne Taittinger, Bouvet Ladubay is once again fully owned by the Monmousseau family who have continuously run the business since their purchase in 1932. Bouvet Ladubay employs precisely the same wine making process as Grand Marque Champagne, delivering French sophistication at an everyday price.
A fine satiny mousse gracefully declines in the glass. Very pale straw coloured base with pale gold edges threaded by a very fine and persistent bead. Pear, green apple and citrus aromas greet the nostrils with some subtle baked bread and oyster shell like notes also evident. Full of flavour and carrying an airy pillowy like feel, the mouth watering palate is awash with pear, baked bread, citrus and red apple flavours. Subtle yeast lees and quince characters linger across the back half. Refreshing acidity invigorating the long baked apple, quince and yeast lees finish.

The Whaler is a blend of Barossa Valley (85%) and Eden Valley (15%) fruit. The Barossa Valley fruit was harvested from vineyards located within the sub-regions of Moppa, Trial Hill and Vine Vale. Grapes from the cooler Eden Valley are sourced from two vineyards situated at either end of the valley, in Moculta and Craneford.
The Barossa Valley component providing fleshy dark berry fruit characters and density, while the Eden Valley component contributes elegance and bright wild berry fruited aromatic lift. A small percentage of whole bunch fruit was included in the ferment with maturation taking place in a mix of new and seasoned hogsheads for a period of 14 months.
Rich, plump and power packed, this is a super impressive Barossa Shiraz for the price.
Impenetrable inky black in colour with a deep dark purple black tinged hue. Engulfing the nostrils are pronounced aromas of dark plum, liquorice and blackberry which are complimented by some vanillin cedar, scorched earth and peppered fennel notes. Rich, concentrated and plush, lashings of super succulent dark plum, liquorice, blackberry and black cherry fruits saturate the full bodied palate. Lurking underneath are vanillin cedar, fennel and peppered earth elements. Power packed and plump it has silky smooth tannins and a long opulent finish that’s bordering on voluptuous.

Aromas of blackberry, dark plum, liquorice and dark chocolate flood the nostrils followed by vanillin cedar, earthy mocha and spice notes. Pronounced "Ae-ree ne gray-nyuh" meaning ‘Morning Sky’ in Gaelic, this is a Duty Free only Bunnah'. A relatively small number of cases are produced every year and a significant proportion of high-quality ex-red wine cask-matured whiskies of various ages are in the mix. Spritely and concentrated, the aromas evolve with strawberry-cream sponge cake, dried berries and fruit beer. The palate confirms the provenance of the casks, at first offering cocoa and barley flavours with a saline / pepper edge, however the creamy finish is the highlight - punctuated with strawberry sponge cake and red berry notes. It's tasty stuff, with a proper ABV in a big one litre format. If the price is right, you can't lose. 46.3% Alc./Vol. Non-chill filtered.

The legendary Bushmills has offered a 10 year old for some time now, but only recently revamped the brand with a fancy new presentation. Fans will know Bushmills as the oldest licensed whiskey distillery in the world, dating all the way back to 1608! Their ten year old showcases a cask recipe from which all older expressions begin life (select bourbon and Oloroso sherry casks). Unpeated and distilled three times for purity and smoothness (most malts are distilled only twice), it's the gateway malt for newcomers to the Irish category. The style is light and Summery, with keynotes of vanilla, honey and sherry lending it to casual drinking or cocktails.
Other reviews... Absolutely superb whiskey showing great balance and the usual Antrim 19th century pace with its flavour development. The odd bottle of this I have come across over the last couple of years has been spoiled by the sherry involvement. This Springbank novelty could easily be mistaken for the Campbeltown Loch Blend, as the label looks almost identical - only the age statement has been dropped. It is, actually, a little more exciting than that. Instead of blending malt with grain whisky, Springbank have re-invented the label using Campbeltown single malts sourced from the district's five distilleries (or distillates): Unpeated Kilkerran forms the base, followed by Springbank, Glen Scotia, Hazelburn and Longrow. The upgrade promises a genuine celebration of Campbeltown character, and the distillates all get a showing - from the dirtiness of Glen Scotia to the minerality and citric fruits of Springbank, the chalkiness, saltiness, and florality of Kilkerran, to the peat of Longrow and the clean honeyed notes of Hazelburn. All were drawn from ex-Bourbon and x-Sherry casks and combined and bottled at Springbank, although the whisky's deep colour suggests more of the latter.
If you want to get your head around Springbank without emptying your wallet, Campbeltown Loch is about your only option. The peated elements do most of the heavy lifting, balanced by a lovely malt and sherry richness. That combination, capped off by a salivating salt and pepper tang recalls certain peatier bottlings of Springbank 10 year old (which is reasonable to assume as the inspiration for this whisky). Also bottled at 46%, there's no shortage of Campbeltown chutzpah on offer: Sweet and sooty with a coastal bite, it firmly ranks amongst the most flavoursome, characterful blended malts of recent years. Buy it whenever the price is right.
Other reviews... ...Now, I just see that this is actually a blended malt – I used to believe Campbeltown Lochs were blended Scotch, no? Looks like this one's made out of all single malts in Campbeltown, namely Springbank, Glen Scotia, Hazelburn, Macallan, Kilkerran/Glengyle and Longrow (spot the odd one out!) Colour: white wine. Nose: young, starting citric and chalky, with some lemonade and kiwi juice. Then there's sourdough, a fresh pack of lemon drops, yellow Haribos and a little lime grass. This one should repel any mosquitos, perhaps even Campbeltown's famous – and voracious - midges. Mouth: very good, with a similar chalky, doughy and lemony development, supplemented with a little fresh mint, green pepper and tiny roots and saplings (quinoa?) Finish: rather long, on pretty much the same flavours and with a smokier signature. Longrow, I presume. This wee chemicalness too… Comments: a fully naked Campbeltowner, undisguised and maskless. ...There’s a fruitier freshness and a slightly peppery grip added with a mineralic fizz that makes things a little more pleasing for me. Yet objectively, this remains good, easy sipping whisky and regardless of which batch you grab, you’ll be in good company. The rumours have moved towards this being mostly Glengyle malt (Kilkerran) in the mix here and that would make a lot of sense, despite that distillery only running 25% of the year (from the same team - and malt - as Springbank) they’ve been making whisky since 2004 ,and a lot more since 2018, they’ve gotta free up that precious warehouse space somehow. Why not step in to alleviate some of the demand for Campbeltown whisky with a good honest malt blend?...Very good indeed. - dramface.com
Notes from Springbank... Nose: A distinct buttery note and characteristic hint of sea salt introduce this dram, along with notes of ginger loaf and pecan pie. Palate: Creamy coffee, salted caramel, date syrup and crystallised brown sugar on the palate, with a subtle hint of peat smoke. Finish: The peat smoke builds in the finish, with a leathery note developing over time.
Collectors note: Springbank's labels almost always arrive with minor wearing and markings, most often to the top of the front labels. This is unavoidable. If you are likely to be disappointed by minor label scuffing, we recommend you don't buy these whiskies.

The Campos de Luz range of wines is sourced from the North East of Spain and aim to deliver highly flavoursome wines at a great price. Unoaked, this delicious Garnacha features a deep black dark red colour and a dark red hue. Intense black cherry, black raspberry and liquorice scents mix with scorched earth, herbs du Provence and spice notes. Juicy black raspberry, liquorice and black cherry fruits are delivered with impressive richness across the medium bodied palate. Scorched earth, peppered dried herb and vanillin spice elements lend further nuance. Slightly chewy tannins impart a meaty feel across the long, succulent finish that shows plenty of spice.

A delicious, beautifully rounded Pinot Grigio that delivers excellent intensity of flavour for the price.
Cantina Tollo is located in the Italian village of Tollo which forms part of the Abruzzo region and is renown for delivering terrific value across its entry level range of Rocca Ventosa wines.
Brilliant pale straw colour with green highlighted edges and a watery hue. Aromas of lime and green to red apple and pear are trailed by some stony mineral notes. A gentler, more feminine and food friendly expression that Islay lovers should get to know.
Despite being the largest distillery on Islay (in terms of production anyway), nearly all of Caol Ila's output ends up in blends, so much so that until 2002 when the 12-year-old was released, independent bottlings were the only recourse for malt hunters. The distillery's gently fruity-smoky style sets it apart and comes down to the production process: "...although it receives the same spec of malt as sister distillery Lagavulin, Caol Ila’s distillation regime – longer fermentation, higher cut point, taller stills, helps to reduce the heavy phenols." Our tasting revealed soft aromas of sweet peat, smoked trout, a hint of lanolin and baked citrus. Rounded, pure and impeccably clean from start to finish, the palate offers semi-sweet smoky-fruity-oily flavours counterpointed by super fine tannins. Although this is relatively young for single malt Scotch, the balance is near perfect. The finish goes long with salt, smoked meats and light lanolin through the fade. Other reviews... Funny to think how recently Caol Ila was an Islay giant that was kept pretty much under wraps by its owner. These days it has cemented its reputation as the island’s Mr. Consistent. This version shows its character the best, a nose that mixes seashore and grass with a distinct hint of smoked bacon. The peatiness isn’t dominant, but flows throughout the palate, scenting, lifting, and subtly changing the mix. A seductive brininess and waves of oily peat-reek greet the olfactory sense. The palate entry finds a surprisingly buttery-creamy leaning along with the peat-reek; at midpalate the flavor becomes concentrated, oily, malty sweet, and only moderately peaty. Caol Ila (Gaelic for 'the Sound of Islay') is hidden in a quiet cove near Port Askaig on the island of Islay. Many consider this locality to be the wildest and most picturesque of the island. Situated on Loch Nam Ban, the site is ideal thanks to the abundant supply of good water. The distillery was built in 1846 by Hector Henderson - a Glasgow businessman with a keen interest in distilling. Like Bunnahabhain and Bruichladdich, the development of Caol Ila created along with it a community of its own. Without these distilleries, it's likely that there would have been little sustained human interference in these areas at all. In 1857 Henderson went out of business and the distillery was purchased by Bulloch Lade & Co. The Distillers Company Limited took over management in 1927. From this date production continued until 1972, when the entire structure of the distillery was demolished. A larger distillery was built in the same original architectural style, and production resumed in 1974.

For over four generations, the Catena family has grown vines in the foothills of the Andes Mountains in Mendoza, Argentina. Laura Catena, great-granddaughter of winery founder Nicola Catena, is currently at the helm. Produced from a blend of four vineyards harvested at different times, this excellent Chardonnay is matured for 10-12 months in French oak barrels of varying ages.
Rich and concentrated yet fresh with a wonderfully textured, stony like feel.
Brilliant pale straw colour with highlights of green around the edges and a watery hue. Elevated white peach and pear scents stream out of the glass complimented by hints of dried honey, wet slate and an oyster shell like minerality in what is a Chablisique like sniff. Rich and concentrated yet stony like in it’s feel, the palate is layered with delectable white peach, pear and lime fruits. Wet slate, infusions of fresh herbs and a smoky oyster shell like minerality ensue. Wonderfully textured and fresh it has a long wet stone laced finish that also has a dash of spice to it.

Refined aromas of yeast lees and brioche are overlaid by some toastiness with following notes of baked bread and cashew. Showing both richness and finesse the palate has seamlessly integrated flavours of baked bread, yeast lees and toastiness over some almond and brioche. Clean dry finish with a moderately creamy mouthfeel. Long aftertaste of baked bread, yeast lees, cashew and toasty brioche.

Génépi (also known as Mugwort), is a generic term used by the inhabitants of the French Alps to describe several kinds of aromatic plants native to the region. For the local mountaineers, it's a tradition to harvest the flowers in August and macerate them in alcohol. Chartreuse produce two variations of Genepi liqueur, although, so far as we can tell, the difference between them can only be surmised by the name. This version is subtitled "Intense", the other is simply called "Traditional". Both weigh in at 40% ABV. It's assumed that 'Intense' includes extra botanicals in the mix, resulting in a stronger aroma and flavour which is said to be reminiscent of "...garden mint, herbs, vanilla, bitter orange peel and flowers". Sauternes enthusiasts have long known that across the Garonne River they can procure what is arguably the greatest value wine in sweet white Bordeaux, which in exceptional years produces a wine equal to Sauternes which may sell at two or three times its price. This bizarre anomaly is the Chateau Fayau Cadillac, and although the wine cannot be labelled Sauternes as such, it is essentially identical in every way.
A vinous bargain when one considers the prices of top Sauternes houses.
Brilliant straw yellow pale gold tinged colour with a watery hue. Leaping out of the glass are honeyed peach and apricot scents followed by some marmalade, sweet pineapple and delicate spice notes. Luscious yet not heavy or cloying, coating the palate are honey drenched flavours of apricot and peach which are intermeshed with notions of pineapple, marmalade, subtle toffee apple and spice. An underlying freshness lends itself to an agile feel across the long and exotic yet elegant finish.
A beautifully poised Fayau.

At one stage the label used to boast this fact, with the words 'CONTIGU d’YQUEM'. Son, Herue is a dedicated and passionate winemaker who ages wine in 25% to 50% new oak casks. The exact percentage depends upon the vintage conditions.

Full and fruity nose, expressive and ripe, nicely perfumed and expressive. Clean and clear, extremely mineral, graphite, pencil lead and flint stone notes on the palate alongside clear blue fruits, blueberries, blackcurrants and some red summer berries. Super smooth in terms of texture but also quite lean in terms of fruit flavour, this has bite and tang, a touch austere but also really quite juicy and floral too. Needs a bit of time, but feels precise and focussed with grip and intensity. I like the fruitiness, really quite upfront but keeping the liveness and energy. Succulent and nicely sweet touches with juicy acidity. Easy enjoyment, plush, mineral, all in balance. 3.6pH. 12% press wine. A yield of 39hl/ha. Drink 2026-2044.

I loved the 2022 Château Joanin Bécot, a juicy, lively, nicely balanced Castillon that has perfumed red fruits as well as the classic mineral and floral nuances of the region. It's medium-bodied, has integrated acidity, and a great finish. The blend is 80/20 Merlot and Cabernet Franc from the cooler, limestone Castillon region east of Saint-Emilion, and this beauty will drink well for 10-15 years if well stored. Readers could do much worse than a case of this in the cellar. Drink 2025-2040.

Juicy and fun, this has a playful edge that's really enjoyable, a sweet, mouthwatering cherry and blueberry flavour with tannins that are textured like ripe grape skins, fleshy and filling. Plump weight yet this remains still quite direct and focussed. Good energy and persistence with layers and bitter, minty, herbal spice on the finish giving the lingering and lasting impression, but well made. Really so effortless in the glass, appealing, full, weighty, lovely concentration - tannic strength but finesse and cool juiciness all the way through. Great quality and value. Tasted twice. One of the more muscular, concentrated 2022s in my tastings, the 2022 Château Larcis Ducasse sports a deep ruby/plum hue to go with serious aromatics of ripe red and black cherries, smoked tobacco, new leather, truffle, and an incredible sense of crushed stone-like minerality. Rich, full-bodied, and massively concentrated on the palate, this intense, flawlessly balanced, voluptuous 2022 has a stacked mid-palate, velvety tannins, and fabulous length on the finish. I wouldn't be surprised to see this close down with 3-4 years of bottle age only to re-emerge after a decade. Based on 86% Merlot and 14% Cabernet Franc raised in 40% new oak, this modern-day legend has a terrific pH of 3.48 and an alcohol of 14.8%.

The 2022 spent 14 months in oak (40% 225-liter barrels, 40% 500-liter barrels and 20% foudre), then three months in cement. I can't wait to see how this develops. Tasted two times. Drink 2030-2062.

Full-bodied, powerful, and most importantly pure, there is a depth of flavor, and richness on the mid-palate that sticks with you through to the extended, mineral-driven finish. Dark to black raspberry, liquorice and black cherry aromas flood the nostrils with notions of scorched earth, herbs du Provence and pepper also evident. Rich, bold and chewy, a tidal wave of black cherry, liquorice and black raspberry fruits engulfs the full bodied palate. Robust tannins lend a muscular feel with notions of scorched earth and peppered meats the undercard. Concentrated and power packed it has a long opulently fruited yet sturdy finish.

Today Chateau Pontet Canet is one of the most popular and collectable wines in all of Bordeaux, and much of this success has come from the extraordinary quality of wines made in the last two decades. While ranked as a Fifth Growth in the 1855 Classification, today the property would easily be regarded as a Second Growth as the wines often rival the best in the region. Much of the emphasis at Pontet Canet is in the vineyard, and the property has converted to 100% biodynamics as of 2005. The vineyard is next to Chateau Mouton-Rothschild, and is planted to 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc, and 1% Petit Verdot.

A sensational Pauillac as well as the finest wine from this château since the 2009 (although the 2010 might have something to say about that), the 2022 Château Pontet-Canet sports a deep purple hue as well as a heavenly perfume of crème de cassis, smoke, incense, leafy tobacco, and chocolate. This beauty has sensational purity, a deep, layered, multi-dimensional mouthfeel, flawless balance, and incredible precision and detail in its aromas and flavors. Despite its opulence and power, it has a solid underlying structure, and its tannins are sweet and polished; it has remarkable depth and concentration, and it just does everything right. I wouldn't be surprised to see this firm up slightly over the coming 3-5 years, although I don't expect it to truly shut down. It should have 40, 50, if not 60 years of overall longevity. The 2022 is based on 57% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Merlot, and the rest Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, brought up in 50% new barrels, 35% in amphora, and the rest in once-used oak. Drink 2037-2097.

It's much more focused and precise compared to the second wine and has brilliant aromatics of crème de cassis, crushed violets, graphite, and smoky oak. Gorgeously concentrated and full-bodied, with riveting purity and precision, this stunning Margaux has ripe yet building tannins, a terrific mid-palate, and flawless overall balance. I love it today yet 7-8 years of cellar are warranted and it will cruise over the following 3-4 decades in cold cellars. It's another sensational wine from this estate. Drink 2033-2073.

While the perfume is catchy, it is on the palate where the wine takes off. Texturally, the wine is drenched in velvet. There is intensity, richness, and concentration, as well as weightlessness on the palate. With this wine, the seamless finish must be felt, as well as tasted. The wine is a blend of 72% Cabernet Sauvignon, 26% Merlot. This marks the highest percentage of Cabernet in the blend and with 17% press wine in the blend, it is the highest portion of press wine as well. 14.5% ABV, 3.7 pH. The harvest took place September 2 - September 28. This is the earliest start to a harvest for Rauzan Segla. Yields were 30 hectoliters per hectare. Launched in 2022, the Bourbon-barrelled 'Grain Barn' is as the name suggests, a single grain matured in former barns at Claxton's Dalswinton Bond. Created to bring the category further into the limelight, it's a shining example of just how assured grain whisky can be. At the time of writing, from the original 1500 bottles there were only about 50 left at Claxtons (word has got out!) It starts with a well-weighted bouquet mingling banofee pie, sticky date, vanilla fudge and cocoa, following on the palate with impressive depth and barely a hint of heat; You get a sultry, slow-motion cascade of Bounty bar, mocha and vanilla wafer biscuit flavours that continues to build texture. By the finish it's buttery and borderline luscious. A polished and simply delicious grain at a bargain price, it comes handsomely presented to boot. And like almost everything else from this bottler, it's nice to see they've released it at a decent ABV. 48% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered. Batch 001 tasted.

Possessing wonderful fruit intensity, textural volume and mouth wateringly crisp acidity, the palate is engulfed with lime, citrus and orange rind fruits. You’re a delight and delicious, even in this still-evolving stage; the patient will be rewarded, so pop some away in the cellar. Open it today and you’ll be greeted by a waft of lemon and lime blossom, waxy hoya flowers and plenty of citrus tang on the palate, with a distinct mandarin flavour. There are no harsh edges with the acidity, just a lovely sensation of talc and texture. Drink by 2035.

There are two types of wine lovers. Those who understand and appreciate the glory of Australian Riesling, and those who are yet to see the light. Among the former, most will turn immediately to the Clare and Eden valleys, with a nod to Frankland River. Some of our other regions are woefully underestimated and Canberra is proving itself very much part of the neglected, when it comes to this grape. The Rieslings from here can be beautifully constructed, taking advantage of the cooler climate. My spies, and the evidence to date, suggest that the 2025 vintage is a truly spectacular one and anyone interested in seeing just how good these wines can be should turn their attention to them as soon as possible. Quantities are never extensive. Clonakilla is, of course, best known for its brilliant reds, especially the Shiraz Viognier. Do not ignore their Riesling. It is something special. A very pale lemon hue, there are intense aromatics with citrus, florals, limes, bath salts and talc all evident, with slight chalky notes in the background. Bright, zesty acidity runs the length and the wine is immaculately balanced. Utterly pristine, there is excellent focus and a very long and persistent finish here. This sits with the very best Clonakilla Rieslings I have seen. Drink over the next 15 years. Drink 2025-2040.

I love the nose on the 2022 Clos Du Roy, a ripe, broad, impressive 2022 that has sweet cassis and black cherry fruits, nicely integrated oak, medium to full body, and building yet ripe, balanced tannins. It’s an incredibly impressive Fronsac that has the fruit and texture to shine today as well as the balance and structure to evolve for 10-12+ years. Drink 2025-2037.

Situated in the picturesque Yarra Valley, Coldstream Hills was established in 1985 by James and Suzanne Halliday. The fruit for this wine was sourced from low yielding vineyards in the Lower and Upper Yarra Valley with a variety of handling and fermentation techniques, including the use of whole bunches employed. Maturation took place in a combination of seasoned and new French oak for a period of 9 months.
Dark red colour with black toned edges and a light red hue. The nose is filled with dark cherry, strawberry and anise aromas. Hints of violet, spicy cedar and forest floor are also evident. Supple in its flow and possessing admirable power, the palate is decorated with rich dark cherry, strawberry and anise flavours. Gently toasted cedar, brambly earth, delicate rhubarb and spice characters all sit in the background. Finely polished tannins show good underlying structure. Nicely fleshed it concludes long and savoury.

Even better on the saline, mouth-filling and beautifully balanced palate. I love the touch of grip on the long finish. A wine you'd still love to have a few bottles of tucked away in the cellar, eight to 10 years from now. I've said this before, and it's worth repeating, but Coldstream Hill's top wines are extremely well priced. Drink by 2035.

While James Halliday no longer lives in the house he built at the winery, his picture-perfect vineyard photos grace the labels, and his legacy here will always live on. Sourced solely from Block G, planted in 1988, this is another impressive and, no doubt, long-lived Reserve Pinot. Dark fruits, violets and spices like nutmeg and clove pervade the nose while the palate is concentrated without being heavy. Firm, yet supple and persistent tannins round out a wine that will still be providing pleasure 10–20 years from now. Drink by 2038.

These BIB releases are what Australian Bourbon lovers really miss out on. Even if you can find them, the prices are often prohibitive. Score one as good as this and the deal gets sweeter. From a fresh bottle, it's a little prickly and smells like varnish, leather and hazelnuts, but later goes deeply caramelly, nutty, dried fruit and Bounty Bar-like after additional exposure. Spirity and warm, though not without a serious injection of sugars; by mid palate it turns buttery, maple-like, rounded, even soft. The finish offers toasted tea biscuits, bitter chocolate, crushed mint and a gentle, oaky astringency. The reigned-in spirit is nicely harmonised and the quality of the wood really shines. You have to love the evolving character of this ballsy, compelling, and at moments, luscious Bourbon that demands patience to show its very best. 50% Alc./Vol. No mash bill stated.

Overall fantastic in terms of being not too heavy, not too light, just the perfect balance that allows you to hold it in your mouth and really chew on it. It’s not overly complex, but that doesn’t make it any less enjoyable... E.H. Taylor Small Batch is really a contrasting bourbon. On one hand you have a really full-flavored bourbon that can almost go head to head with it’s bigger brother E.H. Taylor Single Barrel and holds it’s own. On the other hand you're paying slightly more for the presentation of the packaging for the bourbon it contains. While I wish this sold for [a little] less, there’s no denying that it’s a really solid bourbon that most individuals will enjoy. The palate is delectable and sans the heavy alcohol upfront, the overall flavor profile is enjoyable. Since Cooley Distillery resurrected the traditional Irish custom of peating, their Connemara label has gone from strength to strength. This 12 year old is a perfect introduction to the style. Muted and mildly fruity aromas yield attractive grape / cantaloupe / pear notes followed by hints of dried grass, grains and vanilla. The flavours seem to float over the tongue, such is the initial sensation of lightness. Fresh and delicate, a subtle fruitiness repeats, building moderate concentration with a kippery note towards the finish. The peat never really asserts itself and the aftertaste is somewhat fleeting (we're told the smokiness can vary from batch to batch). Regardless, this seduces with its soft touch. American oak matured. 40% Alc./Vol.
