Possibly no other independent bottler can boast the catalogue that Gordon & Macphail routinely offer. This is due to their foresight to lay down casks for long term maturation generations ago, a practice they continue to this day, culminating in the oldest single malt on record being released last year (an 80 year old Glenlivet that sold for over $160,000). G&M bottle everything from well known names to rarely seen and long-closed distilleries. They are now able to release whisky in multiple tiers, many of which are on offer here. While confusing at first, the current range is broken down into three categories: The Connoisseur's Choice in grey boxes, usually made up of mid-range age statements and always cask strength. The Connoisseur's Choice in wooden boxes, which are older age statements and always natural strength. And lastly, the Private Collection, again cask strength, only taken from the rarest and oldest stocks that G&M have to offer. Given some of the extraordinary price / age ratios, these are today's bargains in the world of ultra-premium single malt whisky. Many will become tomorrow's investment trophies.
