'...God, I love this stuff... this is exactly how a vatted malt should be and one of the best samples I've come across since its launch.' - 95 points, Jim Murray's Whisky Bible 2017.

Johnnie Walker Green Label is the only whisky in the Walker range to carry the 'Blended Malt Scotch Whisky' certification. It replaces the older term 'Vatted Malt' and indicates that the whisky has been blended exclusively from single malts, and not blended with inexpensive grain whisky. The Walker family began buying some of Scotland's finest distilleries over 100 years ago. Now, with over 27 malt whisky producers in ownership, the company doesn't have to look too far for the very best material. They can choose from the cream of the crop, and have also acquired over a century of distilling experience in the process, guaranteeing the quality of their whisky well into the future.

Undisputed as one of the all-time classics in its genre, Green label is instantly recognisable as a Walker blend, with a profile of fresh and slightly fruity aromas with hints of mango and toffee followed by the trademark whiff of peat & sea air that distinguishes most of the JW stable.

Tasting note: Brassy gold / impeccable clarity. A sophisticated, expressive nose offers an assemblage of soft, sweet peat, oatmeal biscuit, dried mango / fig, white pepper with good freshness - sustained even after several minutes in the glass. Full and well rounded in the mouth with nipping spices carrying the malty attack, along with flavours of salted crackers, restrained peat and an oily-yet-crisp finish with strong staying power. The vivacious and intensely flavoured character of this vatting will keep you coming back time and again. Forget Blue Label: Green and Gold remain the stars in the JW line up. 43% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... Just as complex as Johnnie Walker Gold, but fuller and more richly textured. (Not surprising, given that there are no grain whiskies in Johnnie Walker Green.) This is one of the finer vatted malts on the market. Its flavors are well-integrated. You’ll find creamy toffee and nougat at its core, which is then layered with notes of vanilla, mint, fresh brine, and even a hint of mustard seed. Excitingly fresh and vibrant on the finish. A whisky for both the blend and single malt drinker. And at the price, it is also fairly valued for an all-malt whisky.

Is this the Holy Grail of blended Scotch Whisky? The Blue Label blend echoes early pioneering days when Johnnie Walker would select a small number of whiskies in his own local grocery shop in order to create an outstanding blend for the specific tastes of a highly valued customer. John Walker and his son Alexander began their earliest blending experiments using a limited range of whiskies, drawn mainly from the islands, the western and northern Highlands and a few distilleries in Speyside. After rejecting whiskies that didn't meet their standards, they found that the very best were strictly limited in supply. Following their lead, the Johnnie Walker master-blender developed Blue Label as a celebration of the founder's unremitting standards for only the highest quality whisky. The blend is similar to the taste and character of some of the earliest whisky blends created in the 19th century, possessing a traditionally rich peaty taste combined with an exceptionally smooth, deep, distinctly malty flavour.

Johnnie Walker Double Black Blended Scotch Whisky (700ml)
    Edinburgh, SCOTLAND
    $79. 99
    Bottle
    $959.88 Dozen
    ABV: 40%

A new addition to the Johnnie Walker family. The whisky was created taking Black Label as a blueprint and adding heavily-peated malts, some aged in deeply charred oak casks. Memories of our last tasting of the original Johnnie Walker Black about one year ago (the blend varies) recollect an all round richer, sweeter, oilier whisky whereas rather than doubling the experience, this seems to have halved it. For those who enjoy lighter Islays this is akin to a young Caol Ila. It would make a pleasant food whisky.

Tasting note: Deep gold colour. Moderate aromas of sweet cereals, fruit cake and clove are interwoven with peat that has a salty, kippery edge. Entry is light and silky to the point of being water like. Mid palate is light to medium bodied, with soft spices adding depth. Mild flavours of toffee apple and fruit cake seamlessly combine with sweet grains and delicate peat followed by a subtle, drying aftertaste of fruit cake and peat. This is exceptionally smooth - if that’s what’s most important to you - but the overall delivery is a little thin, especially with regard to the finish and aftertaste. 40% Alc./Vol.

Number two in Johnnie Walker's collectable "Blender's Batch" series comes with an American twist: Composed from five distilleries including grain whisky from the now-closed Port Dundas, this was aged in first-fill Bourbon barrels before a six month finishing in former American rye whiskey casks. Its inspiration stems from Jim Beveridge's time spent blending Bourbons and ryes in Kentucky in the 1990s. Normally a travel retail exclusive, we've sneaked a small volume into out latest shipment!

Other reviews... Try this in your next Manhattan. Heather honey sweetness, Belgian waffles, cinnamon, rye spices, creamy vanilla, peppercorn, and dried porcini emerge after the 6-month rye cask finishing period. Sweet caramel oozes over the tongue, Highland toffee and Orkney fudge hold the spices in check. Banana candy and deep citrus acknowledge the Dufftown single malt component. The most accomplished Blender’s Batch to date. Emma Walker has nailed it.

    $599.88 Dozen
    ABV: 40%

The world's number one selling blended Scotch and the preferred choice of whisky lovers every where. Johnnie Walker Red Label is a full-flavoured spirit that is a blend of Highland malt and Lowland grain whiskies. Red Label was originally created in 1909 for the new Scotch drinker who was inclined to mix whisky with ice, water, soda or in a variety of cocktails. By widening the range of whiskies used in his father's Old Highland Whisky, Alexander Walker developed Red Label as a smoother and lighter alternative - this was a break from the traditional deeply flavoured, full bodied Scotch whiskies of the past and was considered a more approachable drink. By 1920, Johnnie Walker Red Label had become the first truly global drinks brand, sold in over 120 countries. In 1933, the company was granted a Royal Warrant to supply Scotch to King George V, and the company has remained an official purveyor to the British Royal Household ever since. In 1996, Johnnie Walker Red Label won the Gold Medal at the International Wine and Spirits Competition, having previously picked up Silver Medals over three consecutive years. It has also consistently garnered Gold and Grand Gold Medals at the Monde Selection Awards.

Tasting note: Brilliant, bright gold appearance. Aromas offer a peaty top note hovering over sweet, fat, oily grains. The palate possesses good concentration with the peat laced sweet grains and gentle spices contributing to a fat, rich, oily mouth feel. Aftertaste of vanilla and sweet cereals with the peat re-emerging. Technically faultless and an achievement given how much of this stuff is churned out. But this bottling (and they do vary) is lacking freshness being quite sweet and clunky throughout. In fact, it's almost a little out of balance. Some fresh oak required in the mix? 40% Alc./Vol.

Ralfy's Whisky of the Year for 2024. "Top coastal blend" - whiskyfun.com

A malt-heavy blend from the team at Adelphi, named after a rocky outcrop not far from the Ardnamurchan distillery (not Charles MacLean's own nose, although he must have had something to do with its creation). Twenty one ex-bourbon Lowland grain hogsheads form a 'blank canvas' to which forty casks of ex-bourbon Ardnamurchan and sixteen ex-sherry casks of the same are added. It’s then dressed with five casks of Campbeltown malt. The significant presence of ex-sherry casks and zero filtration add up to a blend with considerable depth, but the defining character is from the West Coast peated component. This almost tastes like Ardnamurchan 'lite' with the sweet smokey notes supported by an understated fruitiness. The finish intensifies on a peppery note, concluding ashy, fresh and medium long. While it lacks some of the oily richness found in famous rivals like Johnnie Black, Maclean's Nose is so tasty that it's closer to a blended malt than a blended whisky in the mass-produced, contemporary sense. In this case, the slightly higher price is justified. Awarded Whisky of the Year 2024 by the popular youtube blogger, Ralfy. 46% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... This is brand new, but I've heard it's only due to be heading out of their warehouse towards the end of April. I first used to believe this baby was a much appropriate tribute to Charles MacLean's own nose, but I just saw that 'Maclean's Nose' was the name of a place near Ardnamurchan, and that of a salmon farm as well. The label's been made out of barley draff, which surely is a first, but I've heard the cattle was starting to complain, as that draff is usually used as food for them. You cannot please everyone, I suppose. This shelters 70% malt, so in my book, it's a quasi-malt. Colour: straw. Nose: I am not certain there is some Ardnamurchan in there, but that's totally possible, if not obvious. It's very close to 'nature', to the sea, to the draff (there), to grist, to breads, to lemons, to damp oatcakes, with a small fermentary side in the background, which we always enjoy. Then rather earth, root vegetables, wild carrots, williams pears… You say grain whisky? What grain whisky? Mouth: much smokier on the palate, with this perfect acridness that we always enjoy as well, lemon zests, salt, oysters, sauvignon blanc, then once again these bready, fermentary notes. But the peat's carrying the flag, clearly. Finish: long, clean, natural, with no further changes, bread, peat, lemon, brine, oysters… Comments: quite bizarrely, this baby also reminds me of some of the very best new Japanese malts, in their peated forms. Hey, it's a compliment! Top coastal blend - or indeed quasi-malt. 88 points - whiskyfun.com

...It’s one of the best affordable blends you can grab and enjoy right now and I hope, when this inevitably runs out, another batch will be hastily prepared and ushered forward in the spirit of keen replenishment. - dramface.com

...Nose: Blossom honey, and the delicate florals of honeysuckle and chamomile. Cedarwood and thyme. Underneath, malted loaf. With time, caramel waffles and vanilla, then beef stock and burnt toast. Palate: Medium. Salted caramel on baked green apples, and some nutmeg and cinnamon. Shredded wheat cereal. The savoury stock note returns, backed by stewed plums. Finish: Medium, on apple core and raisins. Comment: A dependable blend with lots to like. - whiskymag.com

    Nomad Outland Blended Whisky (700ml)
    $89. 99
    Bottle
    $1079.88 Dozen
    ABV: 41.3%
A collaborative blended whisky from master distiller, Richard Paterson (of Whyte & Mackay & Dalmore fame) and Antonio Flores from the Spanish Sherry producer, Gonzalez Byass. Technically this can't be labelled as Scotch, as the whisky hasn't been completely matured in Scotland, instead it's brought to Spain from Scotland for a final period in Sherry butts. This means the sherry casks are “fresher,” and more active on the whisky than they'd typically be, having not dried out in transit. Maturation is also accelerated in the warm Jerez climate.

Created from a selection of over 30 malt and grain whiskies aged between 5 and 8 years, Paterson and Flores experimented with different Sherry casks, including Oloroso and Fino, but ultimately decided on Pedro Ximénez. After three years in Sherry butts in Scotland, the finishing in Jerez last for another 12 months.

Tasting note: Deeply coloured. Aromas are rich and redolent of orange zest, hazelnut chocolate, fruit slice, dates, vanilla and caramel. Follows on with delicious, juicy fruit cake flavours augmented by sweet spices (nutmeg, clove?). Dried fruits and cinnamon through the finish, with the PX almost overwhelming, countered at the last by citrus zest and vanillan oak. An opulent, sweet-styled blend. 41.3% Alc./Vol.

A brand produced by the Bladnoch Distillery in the lowlands, launched to celebrate their 200th anniversary. Bright gold. Moderate scents of vanilla, clove and light fruit cake. Second pass suggests stewed fruits. Light'n'easy in the mouth with pleasant mocha and muesli-like flavours rounded out by a soft flurry of spice. Ends drying, brisk and woody with subtle grains in the aftertaste. 40% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... The main dresser should be Bladnoch but there is also some Islay and some Speyside, as well as some grain whisky. Let's hope this baby is Bladnoch-driven, and not just some kind of anonymous blandola (going a bit too far once more, S.) Colour: gold. Nose: it's malty, it's cakey, it is pleasantly waxy (beeswax), it's got a little wood smoke, some earl grey tea, lillies, honeysuckle, touches of earth… Well, imagine all blends would be like this! Couldn't the industry pull this off? Mouth: huge success despite the low strength. Same flavours as on the nose, plus more citrus, perhaps from Bladnoch's malt. This is a perfect blend – you don't even feel the grain whiskies. We're not far from Johnnie Walker's Blue Label, to tell you the truth. Exactly. Finish: perfect fresh and honeyed finish, with this lovely citrusy signature in the end. Comments: surprised and impressed, I am, which wasn't the case when I tried an earlier version leisurely. Teachers Highland Cream Blended Scotch Whisky (700ml)
    Glasgow, SCOTLAND
    $51. 99
    Bottle
    $623.88 Dozen
    ABV: 40%

William Teacher started work in a cotton mill aged seven; in 1830 he was employed by a small grocer in Glasgow. After marrying the owner’s daughter, he managed to arrange a liquor licence and opened his first 'dram shop'. These were well maintained public houses selling reasonable spirits. Twenty years later, Teacher was officially recognised as the largest licence holder in Glasgow. The Scotch Whisky bearing his name remains today blended & bottled in Scotland. While all blended Scotch Whiskies are made from either malt and/or grain spirit, Teacher's Highland Cream has an exceptionally high malt content - at least 45%. This is a feature which contributes to its unique character and flavour. The two core components are Glendronach and Ardmore. Glendronach is an exceptional sherry cask Speyside malt, produced in one of Scotland's oldest working distilleries. The heart of Teacher's 'rugged' flavour comes from Ardmore.

Other reviews... Nose: Oily, Fudge-like. Palate: Big, rounded, smooth. Full of crunchy maltiness. To drink this whisky is like biting into peanut brittle. Then toffee. Then licorice flavours. Finish: Rooty, oaky, smoky, these dry flavours providing a perfect balance. Comment: Malty, even creamy, but never cloying. Big and sustaining. The whisky world's answer to Kendal Mint Cake.

Once-off clearance pricing. 80 bottles only.

Boutique-y have released a series of blended whiskies, some up to fifty years old, each intended to be different from the last. Of significance here is the price-age ratio. Search for 25 year old blended Scotch and you'll find they're usually upwards of AU$500. Admittedly, with this offer, you don't get luxe packaging and it's a 500ml format, but still, the value for money is compelling. You'll want to grab at least one bottle to experience what a properly aged blend tastes like. Number 2 / batch #3 was decanted around early 2017 with an outturn of 1,650 bottles and a rather cryptic label. The bottlers add, "There's no massive sphere here, but the disembodied glove has returned! This time, it looks to have discovered a massive, soft planetoid. It's another one of those metaphors! We're good at them."

Other reviews... The label for this one appears to depict a white glove stroking a hairy space testicle. Hopefully not a visual tasting note. Colour: deep gold. Nose: creamy vanilla, cinnamon swirls, nutmeg, rice pudding, fudge. Not much ‘blendy-ness’ so far, rather just some top quality American oak sweetness, with suggestions of ‘Speyside’ flavour underneath. Mouth: easy, apple peelings, rhubarb and custard boiled sweets, young dessert wines, mint julep, young demerara rums, corn syrup. All more direct and straightforward ‘decent blend’ territory. Some nice vibes of spiced custard and caramel. Finish: medium and on wet grains, metal polish, sunflower oil, Scotch broth soups, pollens and a little camphor. Comments: It’s a trixy one this, starts deceptively ‘malt driven’ then gets more classical blend-y, before finishing up not unlike some of these old 1970s era blends with these slightly metallic touches. Still, at least not a testicle in sight. 78 points - whiskyfun.com

Notes from the bottlers... Nose: Honey, oak, vanilla pod and chocolatey cereal. Palate: Cherry, spiced rum, thick caramel and a hint of earthy pear. Finish: Menthol, freshly baked bread with chocolate spread, orange oil.

    Perth, SCOTLAND
    $52. 99
    Bottle
    $635.88 Dozen
    ABV: 40%

Blended and bottled by the Gloag family, whose business was founded in 1800. The Famous Grouse is testimony to the unsurpassed blending experience of six generations of this family, which accounts for the consistent quality and smooth character of the blend. Like so many early whisky companies, Matthew Gloag & Son Ltd., has its origins in the early 19th century, when the founder established himself as a grocer and wine merchant in Perth. Matthew Gloag bought malt whiskies from distilleries around Scotland and built up a reputation for his cellars.

Finest malt whiskies, such as The Macallan and Highland Park, are married with exceptional grain whiskies for an unusually long period in fully seasoned oak casks to create the Famous Grouse blend. The product takes its name from the Red Grouse, a native wild game bird of Scotland.

Other reviews…Remains sexy, elegant and refined with a stunning opening on the palate. But can’t help feeling that caramel has recently replaced some of the crisper notes, especially on the finish.

The Naked Malt Blended Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)
    SCOTLAND
    $68. 99
    Bottle
    $827.88 Dozen
    ABV: 40%

This is the new look for the whisky formerly known as "The Naked Grouse" which has transitioned to a new design and 100% recyclable packaging. The brand began with a grain whisky component, but in response to the popularity of single malts, it was decided to make it an 'all malt' in 2017. Highland Park, Glenturret, Glenrothes and Macallan are / were the core ingredients. The final composition was matured in first-fill and refill American and European oak casks, then finished in first-fill oloroso Sherry butts for a further six months.

Tasting note: Deep amber-gold. Strong sherry input brings whisps of sulphur / struck match and gingery warmth, with a drying, nutty, muesli-like edge to the malt. A little thin on entry, building concentration and spice through the middle; Biscuity and crisp, with light dried fruits, bitter chocolate and some peel freshness carrying the finish. Starts like a Glenrothes and ends like young Macallan. 40% Alc./Vol.

Wolfcraig 14 Year Old Triple Sherry Cask Finish Blended Scotch Whisky (700ml)
    SCOTLAND
    $230. 00
    Bottle
    $2760.00 Dozen
    ABV: 46.1%

There are few more decorated whisky veterans than Richard “The Nose” Paterson. His latest project is a collaboration with Ian Macmillan, a four-decade Master Distiller who's spent time at Bunnahabhain, Tobermory and Deanston. Together they've created three premium blends. Famously claiming to have “rejected more than they selected”, the result is a series which marries the rich heritage of whisky in Scotland with a sense of modern innovation. Sub-titled 'triple cask', the 14 year old is matured in freshly emptied bourbon barrels and finished in three types of sherry casks - Amontillado, Pedro Ximenez and Moscatel, all from Bodega San Andrés, Spain.

Far from your everyday blend, this skillfully composed whisky is geared towards single malt drinkers, or will be a bridge for beginners. In terms of aromatics, mouthfeel and taste, it carries the same gravitas as late middle-aged bottlings of Glenallachie, Glenfarclas or Macallan in a full bodied, sweetly malty, structured arrangement that conjures poached fruits, vanilla bean, cocoa and whiffs of dunnage warehouses. Spiced chutney and hints of peel marmalade complete the profile with oomph and freshness, extending the mid palate length. The impression you're left with is that Wolfcraig is here to make a statement - just how good blends can be when the right creative forces get involved. That goes for the presentation too. The 'cut glass' decanter evokes mid century modern design and adds a sense of refinement appropriate to the liquid, a fair portion of which you'd expect to be considerably older than the label suggests. Wolfcraig's 14 year old is set to remain limited to relatively small batches of around 4500 bottles in order maintain consistency of style and quality control. Tasted from a 50ml sample. 46.1% Alc./Vol.

Notes from the producers... Nose: Warm and appealing. Enchanting and exhilarating as gentle hints of sunkissed raisins, fresh peaches, tangerines and lemon grass evoke a sense of tranquility as they pleasingly drift in perfect harmony. Exciting aromas quickly follow on with nuances of creamy caramel and vanilla delicately dance in the background to complete this portrait of beauty. Taste: Generous and satisfying. There is true elegance in its muscle as succulent figs, sweet sultanas and Napoleon cake reward the palate, with a hint of demerara sugar and molasses. Rich and intense at first but like all good things you must wait; after all it has taken many years to consummate this loving union of different seasoning from the selected casks. The aftertaste of glazed tangerines, marzipan and chocolate mousse with fresh hints of spicy ginger and nutmeg provide the perfect finish to this luxurious blended whisky.

Adelphi Private Stock Reserve Limited Release Peated Blended Scotch Whisky (700ml)
    SCOTLAND
    $120. 00
    Bottle
    $1440.00 Dozen
    ABV: 57.6%

Although this is “only a blend,” the price is very fair especially given it's bottled at 57.6%. Aged in a combination of Bourbon and Sherry casks, the total outturn was 906 bottles. The team at malt-review.com were certainly impressed...

Other reviews... If you gave me this blind, I don’t think I would have had it down as a blend, and I do think there may be a fairly high malt content. Adelphi also bottle a 40% ABV private reserve blend for around £20, which is by all accounts kept in a Solera system. Is this a higher strength version of that? Perhaps with a bit more peated malt in this mix? I’m not sure. Although the components are unknown, Speyside, Islay, and Campbeltown are the names that crop up time and again in my research. Quite frankly, it doesn’t really matter. All I can say is this is superb, and one of the best blended whiskies I have tasted. Blended whisky can be truly excellent when done right, and not to a super tight budget like many of the readily available low-cost offerings that are more commonplace, and which give the entire sector a bad name.... More of this please Adelphi! - malt-review.com

    $719.88 Dozen
    ABV: 40%

This is Adelphi's 'original' blend, employing four grains combined with a high proportion of aged single malts from the west coast and Speyside. Chosen from a large selection of ‘blind’ samples, the final mix is matured in a solera-style vat, whereby, each time a quantity is drawn off for bottling, the vat is topped up with exactly the same blend of whiskies. This practice allows Adelphi to maintain a consistent flavour for each bottling (each batch contains no more than 12,000 bottles). We inquired further, but the actual composition is a closely guarded secret!

Tasting note: Flawless bright gold with a pale straw hue. Semi sweet aromas are pristine and sherry focussed with traces of peat. Brief aeration releases more dried fruits, along with vanilla and gently warming spices. Light to medium weight, super-soft on delivery with dilute butterscotch flavours and delicate, warming spices. Hints of peat become more salient towards the finish. Concludes squeaky clean and feather weight. Reminiscent of the recent Bruichladdich bottling, 'Laddie 10', likewise, this offers great buying value for your next slightly better-than-everyday-drinking dram. 40% Alc./Vol.

We've one bottle only to sell of this curio that evoked a combination of cynicism and praise when it was released as the result of a 'blending accident' - see below. Evidently, in the late 1990s, there was a product called "80:20" which was 80% Glenmorangie and 20% something else, and with an identical marketing speel from Glenmorangie. It would have been a no brainer to repeat the 'accident', but a stroke of genius was required to make it seem plausible a second time.

Other reviews... Serendipity came about as a result of an error, when two parts of 12-year-old Glen Moray were inadvertently vatted with eight parts of much older Ardbeg. Indeed, the Ardbeg could be approaching its quarter-century. Cynics may suggest this smacks of something dreamt up by a marketing department, but whatever its origins, this 'Ardbeg Lite' blended malt whisky has much to commend it. The Glen Moray has given Serendipity a sweeter, more floral nose than is usual with Ardbeg. On the palate the defining dry, earthy, peat notes of Ardbeg lurk beneath a soft, mellow peachy character, but they remain steadfastly present. The result is notably harmonious. This is from a series that is/was meant to showcase the influence of each of Ballantines’ core malts (Glenburgie, Scapa, Glentauchers, Miltonduff). Launched around 2015, some editions were considered more exciting than others; this one being a resounding success, at least according to Whisky Advocate. Review below. 43% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... As you raise the glass to your nose, this has refreshment written all over it. The fragrance of an early morning visit to a florist, zesty orange notes, honey, peach pits, a hint of salt, and the faintest trace of smoke. It's silky smooth, glistening with honey, a firm edge of orange, vanilla tablet, barley sugar, powdered ginger, all elevated by the grains supporting the Scapa. A smooth, feather-light finish of sparkling light spices and creaminess. A joy to behold. 91 points - whiskyadvocate.com

This is a very different beast to the standard Ballantines 30. Taking a leaf out of Johnnie Walker's playbook, it offers the whisky at a higher strength of 50.1% in order to experience its full glory. Released in August 2017 as a Korean Travel Exclusive, Master Blender Sandy Hyslop describes the blend as "intense, with an additional layer of floral and herbal notes that perfectly balance the poached pear and iconic flavour of the original Ballantine’s 30 Year Old". It's one of the few spirits to be rated 5 stars at distiller.com, and given that Jim Murray ranks the 40% expressions as one of the world's greatest blends (96 points), the higher ABV and more considered cask selections should make this something very special indeed. This edition also features limited-edition packaging, further distinguishing it from the standard 30 Year Old. The striking design makes for a perfect gift. Extremely limited stocks.

George Ballantine, the founder of Ballantine's came from a farming family in the Scottish Borders. He established a grocers shop in Cowgate, Edinburgh in 1827, eventually extending his business into wines and spirits. The founders son, also named George, set up in Argyll Street, Glasgow, in 1872 as a whisky, wine and cigar merchant, with many export interests, especially the promotion of their Old Glenlivet and Talisker Fine Malt brands. In 1903 the family business was granted a Royal Warrant and was recorded as "transacting an immense trade in supplying wines and spirits to families of distinction all over Scotland and in many parts of England and Ireland." The company was subsequently sold, however the new owners had similar success, establishing solid markets in the United States and elsewhere. The rest is history...

The Malt and Grain whiskies used to produce Ballantine’s Finest are all aged for more than three years. The original flavour, complexity and refinement comes from more than 50 single malt flavours. The unmistakable Ballantine's flavour is dependent on these 50 single malts, 4 single grains and in particular the fingerprint malts from Miltonduff and Glenburgie. No one single component dominates. The Ballantines range also includes: Ballantine's Gold Seal, a smooth and complex 12 years old whisky; Ballantine's 17 year old, a super premium brand with a deep complex flavour which is regarded as THE Scotch whisky by consumers in the Far East and Ballantine's 30 year old, a rare and exclusive blend of Scotland's finest malts.

Tasting note: Bright gold. Attractive scents of breakfast cereals, husk and caramel. Super soft throughout, as grains and cocoa feature on the light to medium bodied palate, drying towards the finish which is clean, a little flabby and very gently warming. Although this latest bottling seems sweeter than previous batches, it's still one of the picks of current blends if you’re looking for a lighter style at an entry level price point. 40% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews… Nose: Perfumy. Very fragrant smokiness. Palate: Soft and light. Silky, oily peaty. A therapeutically medicinal relaxant. Finish: Lemon-honey. Some late sweeetness. Late surge of gentle warmth. Comment: Very gentle, but a precise clarity of flavours. Drink while listening to Vivaldi. Rating: 85 - www.whiskymag.comsize>

Medium golden color. Caramel, roasted nuts and old rose aromas with a good dose of hot vapor. A brisk entry leads to a dryish somewhat bitter, light to medium-bodied palate with mild toffee, light peatiness, and a sharp turn of white pepper. Finishes quickly with a pepper and caramel fade. Thin and uninteresting. 40% Alc./Vol.

Another beautifully presented and well-aged Ballantines that really hits the mark taste wise too. The Master Blender favours a high proportion of whiskies aged in first-fill American oak casks. Great review from Whisky Advocate below.

Other reviews... An exceptional blend from first-fill American oak casks, which has Glenburgie whisky at its heart. Dry oak, Rolos, cantaloupe, dried mango strips, papaya, and cinnamon on the nose. Scotch Whisky of the Year' & 'Third Finest Whisky in the World'
    - Jim Murray's Whisky Bible 2013.

Speaking at the publication of Jim Murray’s 2011 edition of the Whisky Bible, the man of the hour commented, “Blends are seen by many as the poor relations to single malts. Ballantine’s 17 proves, quite spectacularly, what many of us have known for a great many years: it isn’t. A blender has the chance to create something unique and quite beautiful by putting together many whisky styles. With Ballantine’s 17, the blender has done his job in glorious, quite majestic fashion.”

Note: we have the 40% ABV bottling. Jim Murray's review refers to the 43% bottling, however we would expect the whiskies to be very similar.

Tasting note: Impressive, bright deep, gold colour. The nose offers powerful sweet grainy scents, beautifully integrated with cocoa, charry vanillan oak and a very soft, gentlly wafting sweet peat adding depth. There’s a subtle grapiness too. Concentrated and mouth filling by blended standards and quite spicy, the palate is pristinely clean offering rich sweet malt, followed by cocoa and some smokey, honeyed, biscuit flavours. Outstanding length. Remains spicy, becoming dry - the aftertaste is a remarkable quality of this whisky - pulsing for a good 10-20 seconds and beyond. A first-rate blend with loads of character. 43 % Alc. Vol.

Other reviews: (97.5 points)(n24.5) deft grain and honey plus teasing salty peat; ultra high quality with bourbon and pear drops offering the thrust; a near unbelievable integration with gooseberry juice offering a touch of sharpness muted by watered golden syrup; (t24) immediately mouthwatering with maltier tones clambering over the graceful cocoa-enriched grain; the degrees of sweetness are varied but near perfection; just hints of smoke here and there; (f24) lashings of vanilla and cocoa on the fade; drier with a faint spicey, vaguely smoky buzz; has become longer with more recent bottlings with the most subtle oiliness imaginable; (b25) now only slightly less weighty than of old. After a change of style direction it has comfortably reverted back to its sophisticated, mildly erotic old self. One of the most beautiful, complex and stunningly structured whiskies ever created. Truly the epitome of great Scotch. To the extent that for the last year, I have simply been unable to find a better whisky anywhere in the world. 43% - Jim Murray's Whisky Bible 2013

...The nose unravels with milk chocolate, thick hazelnut spread, and a slender twist of orange peel, though that delectable goodness is evenly balanced with peppermint patties and detectable light, floral top notes. This has a lush softness, with a perceptibly slow crescendo of flavors incorporating caramel toffee, popcorn, and chocolate praline. It’s beautifully integrated with a smooth, dense texture, and releases its grip reluctantly with just a whisper of a peppermint reprise. 43% Alc./Vol. 89 points - www.maltadvocate.com, reviewed by: Jonny McCormick (Summer 2016)

....Colour: full gold. Nose: this is different and, most amazingly, much closer to the old one, with these whiffs of old books, old herbs liqueurs and metal polish, then moss and mushrooms. There’s also more oak, obviously, vanilla custard, cinnamon… And then mead, old roses and Turkish delights (very vivid). Rather beautiful! Mouth: bigger, richer, sweeter and fruitier than the 17. Starts with tinned pineapples and apricots and goes on with pomegranates and cinnamon from the oak. There’s also a little honey, aniseed and touches of rancio (and sherry), then more oak. Just like the 17, it becomes a little dry after a while, a little light… but it remains pretty excellent. Finish: medium long, a notch smokier. Bitter oranges in the aftertaste. Comments: again, it’s no big whisky but it’s complex and beautifully balanced. 85 points

It sold out almost immediately upon release, and its success was repeated by many subsequent expressions. Creation of a new edition only takes place when Doug feels they've secured the right casks to create a complimentary addition to the range.
And the name? It's a tribute to one of Berry's early customers, so called because of the shade of clothes he wore. William 'Blue' Hanger, aka 'Lord Coleraine', was a loyal regular of the Wine Shop at the end of the 18th century and considered "one of the best dressed men of his day."

Tasting note: [15ml sample] Another outstanding vatted malt from BBR. The 11th in the series is a sultry combination of eight casks – four hogsheads, three butts and a puncheon, including both peated and unpeated Bunnahabhain. Very light / pale gold. A semblance of Johnnie Walker Green to this (as it was a few decades back); the same seamless integration of fruit, vanilla-laced malt and menthol-freshness overlaid by a delicate blanket of oily peat. The smokiness is slightly more evident in the flavour but kept in check by the vibrant, salivating malt, orange spice cake and peel freshness. Spot on balance. Beautifully rounded and very moreish. Non-chill filtered. 45.6% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... It’s the intensity of flavor that just grabbed me by the lapels and spun me round. It harbors intense tangelo juiciness; that unparalleled concentration of deep citrus skillfully mingled with dark vanilla, dried apricots, and gentle smoke. This goes the distance, delivering wave after delicious wave: peach juice, mandarin, pineapple cubes, and lemon zest. A firm, unctuous finish shows a little charred wood and dark sugar cloaked in fine smoke. Tongue pleasing and very special indeed. 92 points

Some may recall the old Black & White bottlings and their canine marketing mascots. This famous old blend was first introduced in the late 19th century. The story goes that the whisky baron, James Buchanan selected a black Scottie dog and a white West Highland terrier as brand mascots after visiting a dog show. The pair of pooches were widely used in advertising before they appeared on the label of the best-selling blend.

Some may recall the old Black & White bottlings and their canine marketing mascots. Considering its age, this genuine antique is in good condition excepting some slight tears and markings to the front label. The back label features the brand's two famous terriers. The capsule is sealed with a wire 'spring' closure and the fill level is excellent. This was scheduled for the Malayan market.

Black Bottle Blended Scotch Whisky (700ml)
    Glasgow, SCOTLAND
    $69. 99
    Bottle
    $839.88 Dozen
    ABV: 40%

Dating back as far as 1879, the Black Bottle blend, created by the Aberdeen family business, Gordon Graham & Co, has enjoyed incredible success (especially in Scotland). This must largely be due to the talent of its creators in using the very best Islay malt in an otherwise already well-balanced blend of grain whiskies.

The Black Bottle label is derived from its original bottle design in black German glass with the bottle shape echoing the traditional pot whisky still. In 1914, following the outbreak of war, production was switched to green glass as it is to be found today. After many ups and downs over the course of the 20th century, Black Bottle is today owned by Burn Stewart. The NAS blended edition has just arrived in Australia.

Tasting notes: Bright gold with a straw hue. First nosings detect moderate notes of sweet toasty grains and mild peat. The aromas become sweeter after aeration as vanilla and caramel come to the fore. Light entry leads to a medium bodied, grain focused palate with an undercurrent of sweet, sooty peat. Soft warming spirit with some distinct spices at the finish. Reasonable balance. Concludes a little short with a subtle cocoa, vanilla aftertaste. For those who enjoy a smoke, but only every now and then. 40% Alc./Vol.

Black Bull 12 Year Old Blended Scotch Whisky (700ml)
    Huntly, SCOTLAND
    $79. 99
    Bottle
    $959.88 Dozen
    ABV: 50%
A 50/50 grain / malt blend at high ABV
    that breaks all the rules.

The Black Bull blend was originally trademarked in1933 by George Willshire & Co Ltd, and celebrates the historic Highland Cattle that Scotland is famous for. The name subsequently was assigned to Duncan Taylor & Co Ltd after its takeover of the company in 2001. The present day range includes Black Bull 12, 30 and 40 yr old whiskies.

The 12 year old contains 50% malt whisky and 50% grain whisky and is bottled without chill-filtration at an unusual ABV of 50%. Earlier this year, Black Bull 12 Year Old was awarded ‘Best Blended Scotch Whisky – 12 Years and Under’ at the World Whiskies Awards.

Tasting note: Pale gold colour. This whisky is a little sleepy when poured from a fresh bottle, so if at first you're underwhelmed, just give it some time. A few minutes brings out aromas of dried grass seamlessly melded with sweet, fresh grains, cocoa and a faint suggestion of peat. Hints of fruit begin to emerge. Entry is soft and belies a concentrated palate profile that is an expression of controlled force. Dried grass is followed by dark chocolate and spices, delivered with terrific length and vibrancy, while the balance and mouth feel at high ABV is unexpected. Gentle spices persist into the finish and through to the aftertaste. Concludes delicate, though a little short, with suggestions of dark chocolate and soft smoke at the farewell. A stand out blend. 50% Alc./Vol.

Black Bull 10 Year Old Rum Cask Finish Blended Scotch Whisky (700ml)
    SCOTLAND
    $69. 99
    Bottle
    $839.88 Dozen
    ABV: 50%
Winner: Best Scotch Blended Limited Release WWA 2019.

With roots going back to 1864, the Black Bull Blend was the very first 100-proof blend in whisky history. Duncan Taylor create this with an unusually high malt-to-grain ratio and continue to bottle the range at a robust ABV.

Tasting note: A bold blend finished for a period of 16 months in ex-rum casks from Brazil, Barbados, Jamaica, Guatemala, Guadeloupe and Fiji. Bright gold. Fumes of alcohol and grassy, rum-like aromas lead into a soft, full bodied whisky; well balanced with light rum sugars at the finish and hints of molasses cake, raw sugar and cinnamon. Not overly sweet, but the rum pick up may be too much for some. Add water and you could mistake this for rum. 50% Alc./Vol.

What the WWA said... "Nose of biscuit-like pastry and fresh black cherries. A little sour, some nail varnish and quite alcoholic. The palate has lemon drops, honey, icing sugar and a melt in your mouth texture. Warming finish with more vanilla, shortbread fingers and a pleasing subtlety."

Notes from Duncan Taylor... Rich and delightful aroma with tropical notes of coconut and passion fruit and crisp candy floss. Grassy flavours with notes of grapefruit and apples covered with a creamy sweetness and topped with a hint of mint. The finish offers more fruit and mint balanced with a hint of vanilla oakiness.

Black Bull Kyloe Blended Scotch Whisky (700ml)
    SCOTLAND
    $69. 99
    Bottle
    $839.88 Dozen
    ABV: 50%
A whisky inspired by the hardy breed of highland cattle, the Kyloe (pronounced Kahy-loh), known to survive in the bitter windswept highlands and islands of Scotland. Blended with a high ratio of malt to grain and bottled at a hearty 50% abv, without the use of chill filtration, just like it’s namesake, this promises a robust, powerful dram.

Black Bull brand manager Andrew Shand comments “With the new release, Kyloe, we set out to create a very approachable whisky with a great flavour profile, which is great to drink on its own or mixed with other ingredients in a cocktail. As with all of the current range, we have stuck to the original formula created in 1864, that being bottled at 50% abv (100 US proof), using a high malt content in the blend, and using bourbon wood with a portion of sherry wood, which, with the Kyloe release, produces a rich and fruity flavour profile, with lots of oak, malt and vanilla.”

Other reviews… Kyloe is the old Scots name for the famous hairy, horned breed of Highland beef cattle, better known in Scotland as a Heilan coo. This bright NAS whisky has aromas of fresh orange, lemon, grapefruit, and light muscovado sugar. It is soft and sweet to drink, with lemon sherbet notes, some fruity piquancy, and rich butterscotch, with some peppermint creeping in on the finish.

    $1800.00 Dozen
Buchanan's De Luxe once came packaged in these dumpy bottles with old style spring closures. Our bottling date is a best guess in this case. Spring clips/closures were introduced in the 1920s and discontinued into the 60s, so this bottle could be much older than suggested. It's hard to resist the temptation to open it, but we'll leave it to a lucky punter. One only. Note low fill level. Also missing a front label and part of side label.

This historic label was originally bottled many decades ago when Cadenhead's rose to the challenge of creating a great blend from their massive warehouse stocks. They recently resurrected the '7-Stars' blend using whisky from distilleries all over Scotland. The blend is then finished in Oloroso sherry casks – giving it a bolder more complex flavour.

Notes from Cadenheads... Nose: Strawberries and cream, Apple crumble, butter biscuits. Flavour: Tangerine skin, Muscovado sugar, ginger snap biscuits. Finish: Raisins, cold cocoa drink, slightly hoppy and zesty. 46% Alc./Vol.

Composed of 21+ year old Springbank and Longrow single malt (around 60%) with the remainder old grain whisky, reportedly from the Girvan Distillery in Scotland’s far south west. We've been looking forward to this release given the outrageous quality and value of the now long gone 30 year old.

Tasting notes: Bright pale gold. A soft yet expressive bouquet offers up sweet grains, suggestions of pear and cocoa. Gentle entry leads into a concentrated, medium dry profile showing dried fruits, ginger oatmeal biscuit, hints of peat and vibrant yet controlled spices. Dried fruits, cereals and spices persist with a trace of peat at the fade. Value buy given the price / age ratio.46% Alc./Vol.

Learning more about your Scotch whiskies ...

Over the last few decades, a growing number of distilleries have begun marketing a portion of the whisky they distil for consumption as single malt whisky. But by far the greater part of their production remains reserved for the world famous blended scotch whiskies. By definition, a blended whisky contains both single malt and grain whisky in varying proportions and ages. For example, a typical blend might contain between 15 and 40 different single malt whiskies as well as grain whiskies. Even the cheapest blended whiskies usually contain at least 5% of Single Malt although more commonly malt content will range from anywhere between 10% - 40%.
