1993 Old Forester 13 Year Old Birthday Bourbon Whiskey (750ml)
    Kentucky, UNITED STATES
    $2499. 00
    Bottle
    $29988.00 Dozen
    ABV: 48%

Note: Product has come from a private collection and as such has some minor scuffing/scratches/handling marks.

Being vintage-dated releases of hand-picked barrels, the Birthday Bourbons will vary in style from year to year. According to the Master Distiller, this edition is characterised by a naturally spiced palate that comes with a cool, refreshing hint of spearmint. Bottled in 2006 at 48% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... The same vintage as last year’s Birthday Bourbon but aged one year longer. Last year’s version was quite intense with a lot of wood influence. What does one more year in wood do to the whisky? Surprisingly, the oak spice seems less dominant, and the flavors are more balanced. Still, this is still a serious bourbon drinker’s bourbon. Piquant, dried spice notes of vanilla, cocoa, mint, and cinnamon are tamed by layers of maple syrup, caramel, and toffee. Every once in a while some fruits try to get recognized. A powerful, after dinner bourbon. 88 points - whiskyadvocate.com

"...a much improved product, [that] can finally stand toe-to-toe with its competition."- breakingbourbon.com

According to owners, Brown-Forman, this is a favourite of bartenders. An ongoing NAS release composed of 72% corn, 18% rye and 10% malted barley, the label doesn’t actually say “Signature”, instead its title honours founder, George Garvin Brown, whose actual signature is depicted. Albeit young, BF have done a decent job of creating an affordable, solid, high proof Bourbon with body and palate weight. The nose has a few tell-tale signs of youth, with a touch of bubblegum and gobstopper, banana cake and candied peach but it's augmented by dark chocolate, spice and late hints of peppermint. The palate feels more mature, with cherry ripe chocolate, pipe tobacco and lots of wood spice. Mild tannins give a grippy feel to the finish, followed by a flash of rye and a pleasing pepper warmth that goes on at length. Neither too sweet nor too dry, and at 100 proof the overall balance is satisfying - If you can get past the screw cap and basic presentation, you'd happily sip this neat or use it as a base for cocktails. 50% Alc./Vol. Value one litre bottle.

Other reviews... As a much improved product, Old Forester Signature 100 Proof goes a long way correcting its past wrongs, and can finally stand toe-to-toe with its competition....Old Forester Signature will be an introductory bourbon to a lot of people, or an everyday bourbon to more seasoned drinkers. This price range comes with certain expectations though, like a more memorable flavor profile, that while not overly complex, still provides some flavor depth and sophistication. Evan Williams Single Barrel, Four Roses Small Batch, and Eagle Rare all accomplish this within this price range. Old Forester 86 and 100 proof bourbons have struggled with this for many years. They were far from bad bourbons, they just weren’t all that memorable. Unfortunately what was most memorable about them was their dreadful finish. With this nearly fixed, and a rich palate and respectable depth, Old Forester Signature now provides a solid pour at a great price point.  - breakingbourbon.com, 2019 review.

"...the weight ration and length of each phase is spot on. Charming." 92.5 points - Jim Murray's Whisky Bible 2023.

Inspired by the film,”Kingsman: The Golden Circle,” and named after the characters playing American secret service counterparts, the whiskey promises bold flavours blended to a smooth 95 proof from hand-selected casks from the warmest places in company's warehouse. 47.5% Alc./Vol.

thewhiskeywash.com has more to say about the marketing effort... "The company held a large press conference to unveil the new bourbon, partly because the movie purportedly features many mentions of its hometown of Louisville, Kentucky, as well as the distilling industry. Brown-Forman, of course, was consulted on that part of the script. In the movie, the men of the Statesman group run a whiskey distillery as a front for their covert, good-guy operations. Old Forester stuck its own toe into the somewhat covert waters by releasing the whiskey discreetly in small allotments around the city just after the press event. Even the brand’s master taster, Jacquelyn Zykan, claimed she had no clue where around town they’d show up".

In the 1800's, American whiskey was sold in bulk to rectifiers, wholesalers, brokers and retailers. Barrels were branded with a distillery or 'brand' name. Package stores and druggists bottled their own labels from bulk supplies. Unscrupulous rectifiers, jobbers and retailers would often tamper with the quality and integrity of the whiskey in a barrel. In 1870, George Garvin Brown, a young pharmaceuticals salesman in Louisville, Kentucky, saw the need for a consistently high-quality whiskey that met medicinal standards. With $5,500 in saved and borrowed money, Brown and his half brother started J.T.S. Brown and Bro. They sold Old Forester Bourbon Whiskey exclusively in sealed glass bottles to assure its quality, making it America's first bottled bourbon.

Whisky writer, Jim Murray considers the Old Forester brand synonymous with "...fabulous quality".

Tasting note: [43% bottling tasted.] Deep brass / copper. Toasted marshmallow is the recurring theme on the nose with intermittent flashes of shellac, vanilla wafer and then drier, minty rye notes entering late. Good balance and weight with semi sweet and slightly oily flavours including liquorice bullets, glace cherry and vanilla wafer biscuit before light, peppery rye and the drying oak kicks in. Solid, youthful Bourbon.

Other reviews... This tawny Bourbon has a rich, spiced scent reminiscent of fruitcake. On the palate, look for caramel studded with dried cherry, orange peel and clove, finishing quite dry. A great profile for classic cocktails, and not too precious to mix. 93 points

A straight Bourbon, aged 7-10 years and bottled at barrel proof – uncut, unfiltered. Prickly opening sniffs reveal dried corn over light vanilla and caramel; wavers and narrows, accenting oak shavings before bouncing back. Lots of oak to the attack; Fruit cake, dried peach, sweeter grains and vanillas struggle to gain ground over the wood spices which clinch the finish. Ends mildly astringent, fading with bitter dark chocolate and moderate persistence. 75% corn, 21% rye and 4% malted barley. 1622 bottles produced. 48% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

"If you’re a fan of traditional ryes, interested in how malting rye is a reinterpretation of just what a rye can taste like, Old Potrero will have a lot to offer." - breakingbourbon.com

Despite its name, Old Potrero is a relatively new whiskey. Fritz Maytag began trying his hand at the pot still in 1993, a time when the concept of craft American spirits simply didn’t exist. The first fruits were bottled uncut and unfiltered and received early critical acclaim. Not long after, things got serious. His series of 18th Century ryes became famous for pushing boundaries and re-invigorating the grain. The Anchor Brewing Company has changed hands several times since, but once again became independent after Japan’s Sapporo Holdings acquired the Anchor Brewing portion of the company in 2017, separating the two. Anchor Distilling changed its name to Hotaling & Co. after losing trademark rights to the ‘Anchor’ name to Sapporo after the deal - hence, we now have a new incarnation of this American gem, with a completely new presentation. The liquid inside follows Fritz Maytag's vision of what a traditional American Rye should be, only he's officially passed the torch to Bruce Joseph who is now Master Distiller.

We tasted several iterations of Old Potrero when it was released in batches referred to as 'Essays'. The last one was essay MCMXCIII. Since then, the quality and style has been well honed and maintained. Everything about this rye is great, from the profuse aromas of honey and dried herbs (tarragon, thyme), rye crackers, pencil shavings and peppercorns, through to a delivery that is never for a second hot, prickly or aggressive. What strikes you most about the palate is the superb texture: buttery, supple and perfectly rounded. Keeping the barrel input to a minimum really lets every aspect of the grain shine. Oily rye and honeycomb follow with sprinklings of oak shavings, vanilla, pepper and dried herbs (thyme, caraway and muddled mint). Brown sugar and dark chocolate unravel late in the aftertaste. From beginning to end, this brilliant, one-of-a-kind expression changes your perceptions of what rye whiskey can be. 48.5% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

Other reviews... Lively, aromatic, and grain-forward, with bright notes of red fruits, black currant, and roasted caraway seeds. Lots of depth on the palate, with baked raspberry and blackberry notes. It's hot and spicy, but water quells it without losing the spice explosion, red berry notes, and roasted rye. Warm and more mellow on the finish, with excellent integration of oak, coffee, and bitter chocolate. Spice and tartness, with ably balanced fruit. 90 points - whiskyadvocate.com

Platinum and 96 points: Beverage Testing Institution - 2023

...A 100% malted rye mashbill combined with Hotaling & Co.’s style of whiskey making combines to create a whiskey that plays outside of the traditional rye whiskey box. I’ve often referred to Old Potrero whiskeys as hidden gems. Their distribution outside of the west coast is weak, and their marketing follows suit. Given the recent renaming of the company and rebranding of Old Potrero whiskeys, they seem to have renewed vigor. As someone who thoroughly enjoys the company’s whiskey despite some shortcomings, I’m curious if more people will be willing to give them a try. Their whiskeys taste unique, and while they don’t venture too deep into polarizing territory, they will challenge some. Using a pot still combined with their particular way of making whiskey has a certain amount of special sauce that seems to get overlooked by most whiskey drinkers. If you’re a fan of traditional ryes, interested in how malting rye is a reinterpretation of just what a rye can taste like, Old Potrero will have a lot to offer. - breakingbourbon.com

It's not certain when the newer/current label with the old man was moved from the side to the centre of the label, and there is no laser code evident on this bottle, but the old style label would suggest this is one of the original cognac bottles still using the squat label. 53.5% Alc./Vol. One only.

A quasi-mythical bottling of the legendary wheated Bourbon that stems from the brand's earliest days - hence it was distilled at Stitzel-Weller. It was superseded by the Pappy Van Winkle 15 year old in 2004 / 2005, so stocks have been off the market for over a decade. Of all the wheated Bourbons out there, including Weller, Buffalo Trace, Maker’s Mark, Old Fitzgerald et al, the Van Winkle label is the most famous and sought after today. 53.5% Alc./Vol.

A robust sipping Bourbon with powerful, prickly, vanilla-heavy aromatics accompanied by marzipan and a touch of candied orange, it is equally concentrated and mouth-filling; Yet, for a high-strength offering, the approachability and balance at this proof were notable. 53.5% Alc./Vol.

It's no secret that Pappy Van Winkles are known as some of the best whiskeys money can buy - and the hardest to find. Millionaires have just as much difficulty as the average joe. But Pappy isn’t impossible to obtain, you just have to be ready to purchase on release. About 80,000 bottles are offered annually. Truly unusual, uber-rare discoveries are the historical bottlings like this. Judged to be a pre-2006 release, one clue to the dating of Pappy Van Winkle is the raised lettering on the label. The words “Pappy Van Winkle’s Family Reserve” were embossed so they protruded until around 2006, when a new label style was introduced that used flat lettering. You can see the difference in a side-by-side comparison of Pappy 15 from 2005 and 2008, for example. 53.5% Alc./Vol. One only.

"...beautifully constructed and remains one of my favorite bourbons ever." - breakingbourbon.com

In a blind taste test of whiskey labels from around the world, the Beverage Tasting Institute in Chicago gave the 20-year old Pappy Van Winkle's Family Reserve a 99 out of 100 rating... the highest mark ever awarded. It began as a rye-heavy style but it's now a wheated bourbon, making the whiskey softer, sweeter, mellower and more rounded. It remains the most-awarded of the Pappys, and is sometimes compared with top shelf cognac, helped by its slightly younger age and slightly lower proof.

Home to one of the highest rated whiskeys in the world, and now released bi-annually, the 23 year old began as a semi-annual bottling in 2005 that would quickly sell out upon release. That changed in 2010 when it was made a permanent member on the portfolio. Distilled and bottled by the Sazerac Company at its Buffalo Trace Distillery in Frankfort, Kentucky, the various age statements on offer are regarded by many as some of the finest bourbons in the world. As the oldest of the Pappy Van Winkle line up, the 23 year old is also the woodiest of the range with a slightly diminished sweetness. However bourbons of this ilk always need ample air contact to show their finer points, which was precisely Jim Murray's experience upon re-tasting it for his 2020 Whisky Bible (95 points review below). Almost unobtainable, it routinely commands big dollars.

Other reviews... The corn oils kiss and caress, the tannins barge and batter in a good cop / bad cop delivery... one of the holy grails of bourbon is to produce a consistently a 23-25 year old bourbon which is still sweet and not tannin dominated: no easy task. [this is] unquestionably drier... there are still sugars enough to give some fabulous moments on the palate. The tannins do though, still have the biggest say. But remember, this whiskey has matured for a very long time. 47.8% Alc./Vol. 95 points - Jim Murrays Whisky Bible 2020

Increased demand worldwide for premium Bourbon has made the whiskeys of Van Winkle increasingly difficult to source. From time to time we receive very small allocations of this esteemed 107 proof 15 year old expression. It's the only one of the three in the PVW collection bottled at high proof. You get some of the sweetness associated with older Pappy, combined with a punchy, oily body and a good dose of spice. Aside from Jim Murray, the last time any major reviewer was able to sample this was back in 2012. Now it's either too expensive to open or unprocurable - or both.

Other reviews.... A dream-like Bourbon coating the mouth so perfectly... usually I spit everything I taste. I accidently found myself swallowing a drop of this without thinking. A bourbon lover's bourbon. 96 points - Jim Murray's Whisky Bible 2020.

Sometime recently, the source of this whiskey changed from the now defunct Stitzel-Weller distillery to Buffalo Trace. No matter. This whiskey is still the best of the Van Winkle line. It’s crisp, clean, vibrant, impeccably balanced, and nicely matured. Complex fruit (bramble, candied citrus), caramel, coconut custard, maple syrup, fresh spice (vanilla, warming cinnamon, nutmeg, a dusting of cocoa powder) on a bed of nougat. Outstanding! ...Hazy copper color. A rich, supple entry leads to a decandent, huge, full-bodied palate with intense caramel, toffee and peppery brown spice flavors. Finishes with an extreme long, complex, evolving fade of spice and wood notes. A seductive, exotic, and virtually flawless bourbon. 98 points (Superlative) International Review of Spirits Award: Platinum Medal - tastings.com

Nose: Mature. Inside of an old wardrobe. Leather. Date, chocolate, coffee, black cherry, cigar. Good caramelisation and a tingle of sweet spices. Palate: As nose suggests, in the bigger camp. Rich and precise. Bitter chocolate into raisin. Great balance. Finish: Long powerful. Comment: An elegant old gentleman. Great balance. Highly recommended. - Dave Broom, -whiskymag.com

    $144. 99
    Bottle
    $1739.88 Dozen
    ABV: 46.5%

Made from a mash bill of 68% corn, 18% wheat and 14% malted barley, this Straight Bourbon takes a leaf out of the Scotch Whisky playbook with a finishing in PX (sweet) sherry casks from Spain’s artisanal Casknolia Cooperage. Initial aging takes place in alligator char level barrels (the heaviest char of them all). Winner of back-to-back Double Gold medals at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition, plus another Gold at the World Whiskies Awards. 46.5% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... Dareringer is a straight bourbon that is aged in new toasted and charred oak barrels and then finished in Casknolia Pedro Ximenez Sherry Casks. Batches are relatively small at no more than 15 barrels, however batch numbers are not provided on each bottle. While PX Sherry Cask finished bourbons can be over-the-top, Rabbit Hole manages to deliver a well-balanced experience that’s quite delicious. Dareringer is full of sweet fruit notes, but manages to hold to its bourbon base with flavors of caramel and oak weaving in and out. Moreover, it’s surprisingly full-flavored for the proof which will appeal to a wide audience as it doesn’t taste high proof, but offers a rich character. If you’re a fan of PX Sherry Cask finished bourbons, Dareringer is definitely worth checking out. - breakingbourbon.com

...A potpourri of herbs, dried flowers, licorice, candied lemon peel, baklava, and furniture polish on the nose. It finishes with dark fruit, menthol, licorice, roasted nuts, and plenty of oak. Takes water well. 87 points - whiskyadvocate.com

Rabbit Tale “Cavehill” is one of the company's flagship offerings, labelled as a 'four-grain triple malt' recipe due to its mash bill of 70% Corn, 10% Malted Wheat, 10% Malted Barley and 10% Honey Malted Barley. Aged for a minimum of three years in new American oak barrels, the palate is described as warming with hints of citrus, melted toffee and vanilla bean. 47.5% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... I’ve got to give it to Rabbit Hole, out of the gate their whiskeys weren’t overly exciting, but as the distillery has matured, so has their approach to their whiskeys. Made in small 15 barrel batches, Cavehill with its unique mashbill offers an interesting flavor profile in an extremely accessible and friendly sip. This is a great next step for many whiskey drinkers looking for something a touch more interesting, but fear going too far over the line. Its approachable delivery of sweet, but not-too-sweet flavors against a more traditional spice and peppery finish works well. It’s young and lacks complexity, but brings a clean and bright taste to its delivery. It's accessible in all the right ways, and while it might not immediately wow, it maintains a level of intrigue that makes it quite a bit of fun to drink. - breakingbourbon.com

...Rabbit Hole's core bourbon brand now carries the name Cavehill, though the liquid remains unchanged. The nose starts with dried red fruits, drying oak tannins, raspberry jam, and an earthy note. A palate of spiced oak, milk chocolate, caramel, white pepper, and sweet black cherry is followed by a lengthy finish of orange peel, honey, sweet lemon cake, creamy chocolate, and pepper spice. Rich flavors, creating an easy whiskey to savor. 89 points - whiskyadvocate.com

    $2640.00 Dozen
    ABV: 58.2%

Sourced from undisclosed distilleries in California and Indiana, Redwood Empire's limited edition 95% rye has 4% malted barley in the mix as well as a dash of wheat. Aged in 53-gallon, char #3 barrels for a minimum of four years and up to 6 years on the Northern California coast, the result is a bold, decadent rye with the richness of American oak set against delicate peel freshness and wood spices; the flavours completely envelop the tongue with an impressive wave of orange oils, the character of the grain upping the texture while adding a finishing hint of peppermint. Easily approached at high strength, this gorgeous rye also offers enough sweetness for Bourbon lovers. Give it time in the glass to show its best. Non-chill filtered.

Other reviews... [Batch 001] There’s a savory, herbaceous quality to the nose, calling to mind tea leaves, dried herbs, and a sprig of mint. Sweeter notes, like Andes chocolates, vanilla frosting, and yellow cake soon join the mix, creating a lovely balance between honeyed and herb-driven notes. The palate takes that sweetness and spice even further—there’s delicious heat on the tip of the tongue, giving way to raspberry-filled chocolate squares, black forest cake, and ripe red fruit. The finish amps up the dark chocolate, with a kiss of berry fruit at the end. 58.2% Alc./Vol. 91 points - whiskyadvocate.com

    Bottle
    $1679.88 Dozen
    ABV: 45%

Named after the 14th tallest tree on the planet, Pipe Dream is a mix of four to twelve year old Bourbons, some made at Sonoma County's Graton Distilling Co., others sourced from Kentucky, Indiana and Tennessee. The high corn mash bill is balanced out with 21% raw rye and 4% malted barley. The nose opens with attractive, youngish aromas of peach tart, cherry chocolate, white pepper and citrus zest. Entry develops into a semi-sweet, well-rounded profile offering toasty oak, dried peach and lively spices. Fresh oak and hints of muddled mint balance the finish. A quality mid-tier Bourbon with a typical profile and nice texture. Matured in northern California. 45% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews… For a whiskey of this age, the hickory content is high. And a very sweet hickory at that. Very distinctive Bourbon. 91.5 points - Jim Murray's Whisky Bible.

...An herbaceous nose offers spearmint, spice, tea, and leather. Coconut on the palate, followed by orange oil, peach pie, vanilla, brown sugar, and chocolate-covered almonds. The finish has spice, nutty dark chocolate, espresso, and melon. Cohesive, balanced, and well-textured. 88 points - whiskyadvocate.com

I’m not sure if Redwood Empire’s goal was to create a quintessential bourbon flavor profile, but they certainly nailed it if that was the case. Pipe Dream Bourbon is mainly a straightforward bourbon that nails the caramel/vanilla/oak trio with expert precision. Easy sipping and inoffensive in every way, Redwood Empire nails being an every-person bourbon. That decision ends up being a double edged sword, as it makes the bourbon a bit on the boring side, lacking much excitement besides its delightful strawberry rhubarb aftertaste. The bourbon will probably work best as a gift to a budding bourbon drinker that will be equally impressed by the out-of-the-mainstream selection and enchanting label design. For more experienced drinkers, despite its straightforwardness, it gets a few bonus points for its amazingly smooth and buttery consistency. For its price, it's hard to beat the value it offers. - breakingbourbon.com

    UNITED STATES
    $139. 99
    Bottle
    $1679.88 Dozen
    ABV: 45%

Made from 95% rye / 5% malted barley and aged for over four years in new charred oak. A soft, fruity rye, reminiscent of Sazerac in its subtly peach-apple aromatics and soft rounded mouthfeel. On the palate, dried apricots combine with a slathering of sweet spices; light oils add succulence and length to the finish, leaving you with orange curaçao and cocoa. One of the highlights in the Redwood lineup. Add a few drops of water to accent the keynote grain. Matured in northern California. 45% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews… Aromas of fresh grain, red berries, dried cherries, and fresh-cut lemon, overall a very fresh and lively nose that is beautifully fragrant and redolent of fresh morning fields. The palate is equally fresh, with balanced notes of red fruit, iced tea, and vanilla. The finish is quite long, with more vanilla, and lemon sorbet, balanced by savoury espresso. A smooth but complex rye with depth and lively flavors, but easy to savor. 92 points - whiskyadvocate.com

...While the grain may be stark, the tobacco note tends to knock this whiskey sygogglin, as the moonshiners of the South Appalachians might say. Never seems to be on an even keel, though the odd sharp note is more than attractive. 86 points - Jim Murray's Whisky Bible 2023

Redwood Empire Distilling is in the heart of the Russian River Valley wine region in Sonoma County, California. Emerald Giant is aptly named after the fastest growing Redwood tree in the world. With a focus on sustainability, for every bottle sold, Redwood Empire Distilling will plant a tree. The rye itself is an easy sipper that offers just the right amount of spice with an interesting cast of supporting flavors. UNITED STATES
    $139. 99
    Bottle
    $1679.88 Dozen
    ABV: 45%

Composed of 60% rye and 40% bourbon and named after the world’s largest coastal Redwood, this moreish blend has the mouthfeel of a single malt while retaining some of the oiliness and zap of bourbon. Shy at first, over time the flavours unfold in a deliciously sweet whiskey, buttery through the middle stages with hints of popcorn and vanilla wafers; Older material adds depth, creaming up the finish which lingers with more of the same, toasted oak in tow. Besides Redwood Empire's rye, this sports the best oak-spirit balance and length. You could drink it all night. Matured in Northern California. 45% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews… A blend of 3 to 5 year old straight rye and 4 to 12 year old straight bourbon. Although the nose is a bit reticent, once it opens up, what is revealed is pure delight: orange blossom, iced tea, dark berries, lemon oil, pine, cinnamon, nutmeg, and leather. Fruit and spice enjoy a dynamic interplay on the palate, with orange, cherry, blueberry, and grape, shot through with cedar, cinnamon, and sturdy oak. The medium-length finish is supple and pretty: dark chocolate, toasted pecans, and well-integrated oak. 90 points - whiskyadvocate.com

...Redwood Empire immediately feels like a company you want to root for. Their distillery was built in an old apple processing plant and is located in the small town of Graton, in the Russian River Valley of Sonoma County, California. For every bottle sold, the company plants a tree, which according to their website is at 225,415 trees at the time of this writing. Drinking this whiskey I kept thinking, is this the new...old High West? A blend of bourbon and rye, Lost Monarch offers an usual range of bourbon and rye flavors. With a light gin-like quality, the taste reminds me of older High West releases and leans in more towards the rye flavor profile. Exploring further and learning the blend contains bourbon ranging from 4 to 12 years old along with rye ranging from 3 to 5 years old solidified that thought... It’s a no-brainer, buy it and try it before the price goes up or the blend changes. - breakingbourbon.com

    ABV: 50%

Redwood Empire's 100 proof version is produced from 66% corn, 23% rye, 7% wheat and 4% malted barley, aged five years in 200 litre barrels, toasted and charred to level three. Bitter peel, wood shavings and tingling alcohol are evident on the nose before settling into fruity-vanilla territory. Despite the high ABV, it's a middle-weight, accessible style; If at first the wood feels a little too assertive and grippy, work it around your mouth to extract sweeter notes of cherry and ripe peach. Oak and spices rally at the finish, leaving the impression of bitter dark chocolate. The label references the Grizzly Giant, a massive Sequoia in Yosemite National Park. Batch 002 tasted. 50% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews… All manners of orange are here, with orange peel, Creamsicle, and a hint of orange soda right up front. This citrus is joined by sweeter elements: a drizzle of maple syrup and inviting wood spice. The palate is creamy, and that tangy, zesty citrus carries on, though there's also blueberry cobbler, a burst of Red Hots, and buttered toast sprinkled with sugar and cinnamon. A moderate-length finish balances oak with tart red fruit. (3,000 bottles) 89 points - whiskyadvocate.com

Lots of warming spice and astringency through the finish. Mature, but some may find the wood too much. Batch 001 tasted. 58.4% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

Other reviews… Spice-driven bakery shop aromas highlight the nose with notes of cinnamon babka, Christmas cake, gingerbread cookies, and powdered sugar sitting alongside a woodsy, pine forest quality. Water brings out toasted coconut and caramelized banana. A creamy and honeyed palate delivers tobacco leaf, vanilla cream, rye spice, cinnamon scone, and bitter chocolate. It’s zippy and benefits from added water. Whipped cream punctuates a lengthy finish Spice abounds on this robust and potent whiskey. 91 points - whiskyadvocate.com

    ABV: 50.05%
Back in the late 1700's when John Rowan first settled in Kentucky, whiskey making was the order of the day. John went on and made a name for himself as a respected judge & statesman.  The creek still bears his name. As a small batch bottling the profile will vary from batch to batch.

Tasting note: [BATCH QBC 16-23 tasted] Amber-gold. The nose is 'pretty' for a Bourbon - almost floral, with aromas of beeswax, stewed pear, caramel fudge, light clove and white pepper. Incredibly approachable at high proof. So softly spoken, yet with a hard, peppery edge from the oak; just enough lingering vanilla/fruit sweetness to hold your attention, but the wood threatens the balance. Lean and savoury. 50.5% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... . Beautifully balanced, like Kentucky Vintage, but more complex and with greater depth. It’s also not as boldly dry as Pure Kentucky X.O. Rather, it is softer and more seductive. This is splendid bourbon! It would be a shame to adulterate this bourbon in any way—don’t even think of mixing it. Find yourself a quiet moment, pour yourself a measure, and savor. (Batch 03-59)

Named American Whiskey of the Year by Whisky Advocate Magazine in 2001.

Distilled in Spring 1983 and bottled in the Fall of 2001, this time capsule bottle harks back to the earliest days of BT's Antique Collection. When the Sazerac Company acquired what is now called Buffalo Trace distillery in 1992, one of their long-term intentions was to see the eponymous rye brand return. They began distilling it for the first time in 1998, introducing the modern version of Sazerac Rye in 2006. Prior to this, a Sazerac 18 year old was launched in 2000 as part of the now famous Antique Collection. These were bottled from a legendary batch of rye distilled by Schenley at Buffalo Trace when it was still known as George T. Stagg. Distilled in the early 1980s with the intention of releasing a rye line for its popular Cream of Kentucky brand, the company lost interest in the project and the casks were left to age far beyond the normal period for such whiskeys. To the surprise of many, the forgotten liquid had turned into an exceptional product. With 1984 being the final vintage for the Cream of Kentucky, the remaining casks were placed into steel tanks in 2004 to prevent over-maturing. This 2001 release was reportedly bottled directly from the wood. Meanwhile, the tanked rye continued to provide whiskey for the annual release Sazeracs until 2015 when the inventory finally ran out. 45% Alc./Vol. Collectable. (Information on this bottling was partly sourced from whiskyauctioneer.com).

Other reviews... Deep amber color. Bold and surprisingly youthful aromas, and quite vibrant for its age-huge spicy notes (mint, cinnamon, vanilla, anise, freshly ground pepper), with rich toffee, caramel and background fruit. Rich, enveloping body. Enormous in flavor, with youthful dynamic spices (mint, cinnamon, vanilla, pepper), wrapped in rich toffee and molasses, tamed by mature oak and leather notes. The flavors intensify on the palate, ultimately reaching a crescendo. The boldness of the spices and maturity of age dovetail perfectly. Its finish is very satisfying and seemingly eternal. 96 points - whiskyadvocate.com

"the nose and delivery are just about as good as it gets." - Jim Murray's Whisky Bible 2019

Sazerac Rye dates back to the 1800’s and symbolizes the tradition and history of New Orleans saloons. It was at the Sazerac Coffee House on Royal Street where local patrons were served toddies made with Rye whiskey and Peychaud’s Bitters. The libation became know as the “Sazerac” and America’s first branded cocktail was born. This 6 year-old version of the famous Sazerac Rye is produced at the scenic Buffalo Trace Distillery in Frankfort (probably using a 'barely legal' rye recipe), home of numerous other whiskies such as Eagle Rare 10 year-old, Eagle Rare 17 year-old, Blanton's, Rock Hill Farms and George T. Stagg. The beautifully designed bottle harks back to the pre Civil War days when barrels of whisky were poured into ornately engraved decanters supplied by the distiller, displaying the colour of the whiskey to good effect. In what seems to be a company tradition, the price is nowhere near the kind of money many other ryes command.

Our re-tasting since last visiting this stalwart in 2008 found moderate aromas suggesting caraway and oak shavings then green apple, orange zest, wood spice and sweet nutty/vanilla notes. This is a soft, plush 'fruity' style without compromising depth of flavour - dried apricots, apply rye and white pepper come counterpointed by light vanilla oak. The keynote grain isn't aggressive like some others, while the balance is near perfect, and there's dark rye bread, more pepper and a subtle muddled mint refreshing the fade. In short - Sazerac is a broad appeal whiskey with enough mid-palate sweetness, complexity and kick to convert one-eyed Bourbon nuts - or even the odd malt enthusiast. Keep this as the 'proper' choice for a Manhattan or Sazerac Cocktail. 45% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... the nose and delivery are just about as good as it gets. Anyone thinking of making a clean and succulent rye whiskey should plant this on a dais and bow to it every morning before heading to the stillroom. 96 points- Jim Murray's Whisky Bible 2019

... Youthful and very lively. Bold, crisp, spices (mint, cinnamon, vanilla) are softened by soothing, sweeter notes (candied fruit, coconut, caramel, and rum notes), becoming dry, flinty, and spicy on the finish. It is very clean and polished, and it is superior to other rye whiskeys in this age range. Nicely done! 88 points. (4th Quarter 2005 Issue-Vol. 14#4) - whiskyadvocate.com

This elder rye shows fine craftsmanship, balancing touches of toasted-spice and floral aromas, with dried herbs, candied orange peel, and mature varnish notes. It's big on the palate, with heaps of molasses, creamy vanilla sweetness, and orange Creamsicle that lead to pleasing cedar and sandalwood oak, with zesty grapefruit notes. "...a solid showing and one that fans won’t be disappointed in". - breakingbourbon.com

Other reviews... 2022’s Thomas H. Handy delivers a bold, spicy sip with a base of raisin that’s characteristic of the brand. Thomas H. Handy receives the least attention of all the bottles in the Antique Collection for a number of reasons. It’s the youngest, typically coming in around 6 years old, and it’s a rye as opposed to a bourbon. Additionally, where a decade ago a barrel proof rye was fairly uncommon, barrel proof ryes have become increasingly popular in recent years, especially those with single digit age statements. But despite the fact that there are significantly more barrel proof ryes of a similar age available today, Thomas H. Handy still holds its own as one of the best. Oak isn’t on display here, instead, a grounding base of raisin and tobacco serves to hold up loads of spice and warming heat that’s not surprising at a proof north of 130. While Thomas H. Handy’s mashbill isn’t disclosed, it’s likely just over the legal requirement to be classified as a rye, as sweet flavors often shine through in various ways - even if some come through under the guise of a hot candy note. The bubble gum accent is also worth pointing out, another sweeter element and not one you notice too often in a whiskey. Overall, 2022’s Thomas H. Handy is fairly representative of the brand, and while it doesn’t hit the absolute highest point Handy has proven to be capable of, it’s a solid showing and one that fans won’t be disappointed in. - breakingbourbon.com

One of five bottlings in the Buffalo Trace Antique Collection, the 2018 Handy was matured for six years and four months in 73 hand picked barrels, then bottled uncut and unfiltered.

Other reviews.... Cereal grain notes and fresh-cut oak suggest some youthfulness here, but the stone fruits and hot caramel sundae appear dense and richly layered. On the palate the big, up-front sweetness evolves into nougat, marzipan, and caramel-covered apple, sprinkled with root beer spices, before more grain and pastry notes appear on the finish. Powerful and vibrant stuff.

Uncle Nearest 1884 Small Batch Tennessee Whiskey (700ml)
    Tennessee, UNITED STATES
    $140. 00
    Bottle
    $1680.00 Dozen
    ABV: 46.5%

The most recent bottlings from Uncle Nearest come with refreshed labels, but more importantly, their whiskey is now 100% distilled, aged, and bottled by Nearest Green Distillery instead of being a sourced product. Spirit began ageing in 2017, which at the time of writing makes this at least 4-5 years old. Each batch is curated by fifth generation Nearest Green descendant and Master Blender, Victoria Eady Butler, who was named Master Blender of the Year by Whisky Magazine for two consecutive years in 2021 and 2022, as well as receiving the same honour from The Spirits Business and Vinepair in 2021. Light on aromatics and feather weight on entry, 1884 slowly crescendoes on the palate in a pleasing wave of dried corn, oak shavings, white pepper and subtle dried peach and banana flavours. Although it doesn't taste overtly young - rather softly spoken and elegant - by the finish it is perhaps a little too woody. Late spices add depth. 46.5% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... A nose of blossom honey, fresh cherries, banana cream pie, licorice, and spice is followed by a palate that’s delicate and creamy, with notes of vanilla frosting, orange, peanuts, marshmallow, and light pepper spice. Tobacco leaf on the finish, with cherry, oak, and understated spice. A sturdy, finessed exemplar of Tennessee style. 88 points - whiskyadvocate.com

...The nose immediately falls in the classic bourbon aroma territory with a soft-medium intensity. It’s more than sufficient and while it doesn't have any surprises, it performs well enough. The palate lacks much depth or body, but the flavors are complementary with its amaretto note and medium-thick mouthfeel being its highlights. Finally, the short and simple finish is the whiskey’s biggest letdown. Overall, the whiskey is straightforward and fairly simple. It’s easy drinking, inoffensive, and completely lacks any youthful notes. While this current state of Uncle Nearest 1884 Small Batch Whiskey is adequate, some additional time in the barrel may get it to where it needs to be. - breakingbourbon.com

...Perhaps noticeable for its significant lack of corn oils. Delicate and leans towards a hickory persona. A covertly complex and delightful Tennessee. 90.5 points - Jim Murray's Whisky Bible 2023

    $1980.00 Dozen
    ABV: 50%

Inspired by the whiskey-maker the world never knew: the first African-American Master Distiller on record in the United States, 'Nearest Green'. It's from Uncle Nearest that Jack Daniel was taught about distilling back in the mid-1800s, so he's undoubtedly a vitally important figure in American whiskey history. The present day brand encompasses a premium aged whiskey, an 11 year old single barrel product, and a 7 year old small batch offering, all distilled, aged, bottled and hand-labeled in Tennessee. '1856' is corn and rye based, and like JD, it's put through the Lincoln County Process of charcoal filtering before bottling.

Other reviews... Cheerful spices infiltrate the liquorice lead; beautifully mouth-filling and rounded from the get go with immediate corn oil and molasses impact. Excellent, lip smacking vanilla layering ensures considerable complexity; the spices continue their excellent work, now teaming up with a far chunkier degree of hickory. A lustier, busier incarnation than the last bottling of 1856 I encountered. Thoroughly enjoyable. 91.5 points - Jim Murrays Whisky Bible 2021

Note: there's some bruising and indentations to the presentation box. Overall very good to excellent condition. One only from a private collection.

There are several rumours circulating around this very rare and collectible bottle. One of them reports that Julian Van Winkle claimed it to be the best or one of the best ryes he ever bottled. In his words, "it was about the best rye we put out". Distilled in 1985 from a mashbill of 38% corn, 51% rye and 11% malted barley, it was bottled in 2001 as denoted by the ‘A’ in the lot/bottle number, meaning it's actually 15 years old, as opposed to thirteen, as has been the case for subsequent releases.

Bottled by Julian Van Winkle III at Old Commonwealth distillery in Lawrenceburg, unlike later editions of Van Winkle Family Reserve, this was released at 100 proof and (importantly) unchillfiltered. According to one source, Julian also confirmed "...this un-chillfiltered version was an experiment for the European market at the request of a French customer"  and further notes "...this release does have some flavour lost in the regular chill filtered version."

Finally, this whiskey is presumed to have been distilled at Medley in Owensboro, with Cream of Kentucky rye from Bernheim blended through it (more recent bottlings probably contain whiskey distilled at Buffalo Trace). Still other sources suggest this is actually unblended Medley distillate (the Medley family has a long history of bourbon distillation going back eight generations).

Other reviews... A supremely improbable rye that has managed to retain a zesty freshness over 15 Summers. Brilliant. 91 points - Jim Murray's Whisky Bible 2008

[2013 bottling tasted] I’ve always been a fan of Lot B. It’s sweet and fruity and easy to enjoy. It was the first Van Winkle bourbon I owned and I gladly shared it with whoever was interested in trying it. Of course I never had anyone refuse it, but more importantly, everyone that tried it, loved it. That’s a good way to sum up Lot B. It’s a crowd pleaser. It also has the most in common with Pappy 20 Year with its fruit-forward palate than any of the other Van Winkle bourbons. At the same time, it’s a bit simple and its proof is a bit light for its flavor profile. It’s often the most overlooked in the collection and part of that is probably due to its lackluster labeling. It deserves better. It’s a great bourbon with easy-to-enjoy flavors, but I just don’t know if it has enough of the “Pappy magic” to warrant the kind of price it commands on the secondary. If I’d never had it before, I’d gladly pay up, but after the hype fades, I’d think twice. - breakingbourbon.com

1 bottle only to sell. Contains some minor creasing to the front label with a slight lift on the left hand side, and a minor crack to the wax seal.

Other reviews... Very mature and quite rich on the nose with thick toffee, molasses, maple syrup, suggestions of Pedro Ximinez sherry, deep sappy oak notes and background spices. Similar on palate entry, too-a mouthful of rich, chewy whiskey-but the whiskey then unfortunately turns very dry, with oak and leather notes that dominate. There's more information available on this unusual bottling here - ohgo.sh/archive/vintage-rye-whiskey-review/ "Vintage ryes are produced by Kentucky Bourbon Distillers in Bardstown, Kentucky. Three bourbons, at 17, 21 and 23 years old, and two ryes, at 21 and 23 years old, are available under the “Vintage” label, all coming from some of the oldest barrels KBD have in their warehouses. A number of other bottlings on test here also come from the KBD warehouses, including Black Maple Hill and The Bitter Truth, so it will be interesting to see how these whiskeys compare.

There’s no hiding the Vintage 23 has spent twenty three years in oak… from the first sniff you get a heavy dose of woody notes as well as some zest and cinnamon. In the mouth the woodiness continues, but you also get a lot more zest and fruit than is present in the 21 year old. The whiskey certainly isn’t over mellowed though, there is plenty of peppery spice and a fairly hot finish on the back of the throat. Adding ice tones down the finish a little, but the Vintage 23 still has a strong pepper note. For sipping the wood and pepper notes can sometimes be a little much, but the strong flavours make me excited to see how this compares in something like an Old Fashioned. Interesting to note how different the Vintage 23 is to the Black Maple Hill 23, two ostensibly similar whiskeys from the same distilleries stocks.47% Alc./Vol.

Rated No.2 by dramdata.com in the top ten whisky investments for 2019. Recording a 50% increase and now selling for over $480 both here and in the US, our recommendation is a strong buy.

Many Australian collectors remain oblivious to the surge in demand and dwindling supply of premium American whiskeys. In the US and Europe, ask for Pappy Van Winkle et al. and retailers will laugh in your face. Meanwhile, older age statements from Michter's and the annual releases from Buffalo Trace's 'Antique Collection' are seducing collectors and selling at stratospheric prices on the secondary market. Asia is fast catching on. The good news is, so long as international allocations are honoured, buyers in countries like Australia can capitalise on fair opening prices. Right now, Weller 12 should be on your list. With tiny volumes imported via official channels, this may be your last chance before the market wakes up.

Produced by Buffalo Trace Distillery, replacing rye with wheat makes for an extra smooth Bourbon. This is also aged considerably longer than most wheated styles. In fact, the boys at breakingbourbon.com reckon Weller 12 is as close as you can get to tasting Pappy Van Winkle - it comes from the same recipe as Van Winkle Lot B, which is also aged 12 years, (but it's not matured in the sweetest spots in the warehouses). Factor in the price difference and you have yourself a bargain.

A “wheated” bourbon, meaning that it doesn’t have the spicy rye notes found in a more traditional “ryed” bourbon. A pleasantly sweet, easy-going, well-balanced experience. Creamy vanilla, caramel, candied corn, and ripe berried fruit , along with more subtle notes of glazed orange, cocoa powder, and wood shavings. If I were going to ease a new bourbon drinker into the category, I might pick this one. 89 points  - whiskyadvocate.com, reviewed by: John Hansell (Fall 2008)

...Balanced, and sporting a great flavor profile, this is one bourbon that is far better than many in its price range... Does it get better than this? Van Winkle recipe, aged 12 years, low price and an above-average nose/palate/finish? There are a very few bourbons that can flat-out beat it without blowing your budget. Also don’t let the Weller’s line of underwhelming bottle design and labels deter you from finding the gem. The money Buffalo Trace saves on the bottle itself is passed along to the consumer. As their shortages continue, if you see a bottle of W.L. Weller 12 Year, grab it. It might not immediately blow you away with gimmicks, but once you familiarize yourself with it, you're likely to become great friends. - breakingbourbon.com

    $179. 99
    Bottle
    $2159.88 Dozen
    ABV: 50%

Rum cask finishes are slowly trending in American whiskey. The sweetness of American oak combined with rum bounce off each other beautifully when the balance is right. This example offers up hints of shaved coconut and chocolate rum balls, especially on the nose. On the palate, the rum influence is restrained, in accord with Westward's delicate, fruity spirit. Wood spices add vibrancy to the finish. Tasted from a 30ml sample.

Other reviews... Building off a 100% malt base, sweet complementary rum flavors add depth to this American single malt. Westward Whiskey is located in Portland, Oregon and specializes in a category of whiskey that’s particularly notable right now, American single malt. Westward offers a variety of finished single malts, including Pinot Noir Casks, Stout Casks, and more. Rum Cask starts with Westward’s Single Malt Whiskey as a base, and then it’s finished in ex-Guatemalan rum casks. Guatemalan rum is distilled from fermented virgin cane syrup, as opposed to molasses, and has a rich history that dates back as far as 1591. The cane sugar sweetness shows through against the malt base, permeating through the entire whiskey. However, Westward’s base malt maintains the backbone of the flavor profile, and isn’t shy about its malt notes. The rum sweetness works in complement with the malt base - even though they’re two very different flavor realms but somehow it just works. Overall, Westward Rum Cask is a fun, unique combination of flavors that doesn’t taste like any of the growing number of rum finished whiskeys you may find on the shelf. - breakingbourbon.com

Westward shows the character of its distillate brightest here. It's still no monster, but everything is amplified in a mouth coating delivery with suggestions of dried peach and controlled spices dovetailing into some classy vanilla oak. It's rounded off by hints of Bounty bar and fruit'n'nut chocolate with a grassy freshness lifting the aftertaste. The balance is noteworthy at this strength. Tasted from a 30ml sample.

Other reviews... On the nose, fragrant wood spice, green banana, baked kumquats, and kiwi. The palate leads with creamy vanilla and baking spice, jalapeño peppers, dark chocolate, black coffee, and chicory. The big flavors mean water is a must, bringing out chocolate-covered marshmallows, dark berries, a tropical note of sweet pineapple, toasted almonds, coffee cake, and a hint of barrel char. The finish is full bodied and spiced, with more pineapple and vanilla sweetness. 90 points - whiskyadvocate.com, reviewed by: David Fleming 2021

    $1920.00 Dozen
    ABV: 45%

This cask-finished American malt begins with Westward's original single malt, which is then finished for up to two years in French oak wine casks sourced from a handful of award-winning Pinot producers in the region. The bouquet retains most of the character noted in the standard bottling, with the addition of baking spices (nutmeg?) and a subtle prune overlay. Medium bodied, pleasingly spicy with a light injection of dried peach, Turkish Delight and bitter dark chocolate, then papaya; the palate shows moderate length with a fairly brisk, warming aftertaste. Think of it as a spiritous tribute to Oregon’s Willamette wine country. Tasted from a 30ml sample. 45% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... The nose balances enticing aromas of tropical fruit—mango, jackfruit, papaya—with earthy clay and dark chocolate, a harbinger of the bright sweetness of the palate, which sings with grapefruit, lemon-lime zest, kiwi, and pineapple soda, plus roasted nuts and semi-dark chocolate. The texture is waxy, verging to oily with a few drops of water, but never heavy. Though the finish is short, it’s complete, rounded out with white pepper, jackfruit, and grapefruit oil. 89 points - whiskyadvocate.com, reviewed by: Susannah Skiver Barton (Spring 2021)

‍...Having visited Westward’s distillery, the company takes great care in the wine casks it sources to finish their whiskey. This seems to be a common practice with wine-finished whiskeys that stand out over others. Much like the barrels producers age in, the barrels they finish in can mean just as much to the final product. Westward American Single Malt Pinot Noir Cask is another fine example of Westward’s distilling and finishing prowess. Nicely balanced all around with a touch more intensity than some of their other releases, Westward Pinot Noir Cask finished whiskey is spot on. The whiskey is quite approachable thanks to a soft blend of grape, plum, and pear that’s nicely accented with oak, leather, and roasted malt. Much like its finish, its malt base isn’t overpowering and plays well with the other parts of the whiskey making for a rather enjoyable sipper. - breakingbourbon.com

Notes from the producers...  fruity and robust, with plum, apricot leather, and chocolate ganache notes. Flavors include apple, plantain, and nutmeg, with a rich, dried fruit and sweet malt finish.

Set to be part of the core range, Westward's latest addition has been transferred into ex-stout casks for approximately one year. The casks are sourced from breweries around the state including Bent Shovel, Breakside, Culmination, Ex Novo, Fort George, Migration and Sky High. A subtle chocolatey theme pervades this whiskey, the aromas suggesting fruit'n'nut chocolate, the entry offering more chocolatey malt with the grassy freshness of the distillate adding zing to the finish. Rounded in the mouth, it fades with dustings of cocoa and delicately fruity malt. Tasted from a 30ml sample.

Other reviews... Tropical and floral on the nose, with kiwi, mango, hibiscus, coconut cream, and pistachio and almond halva; add water and a big burst of honeysuckle blooms. There are more tropical notes on the palate: melon, guava, pineapple, and Juicy Fruit, as well as almond, coffee ice cream, milk chocolate, and spice. The mouthfeel is robust, becoming mouthwatering on the finish, which is oak-led but balanced with floral hop character. 90 points - whiskyadvocate.com, reviewed by: Susannah Skiver Barton (Summer 2020)

There is a fragmentary moment, just after delivery, when all is right in the world: the malt has blossomed like a rhododendron on steroids, the palate is thick with delightful gristy sugars and light maple syrup... then the darker clouds return. Again, it is in the form of bitterness from the distillate. Technically flawed, but those malty moments, plus some late dark chocoalte, which ensures some delicious moments. "A true American single malt showing proof & Gusto." - whiskyadvocate.com

Diageo-backed 'Distill Ventures' has been investing in startup distilleries for several years now. The world’s biggest whisky company promises capital, mentorship, sales and marketing expertise in return for equity. But not just any 'mum & dad' distillery can apply. When the planets align and the right mix of product, packaging and people are combined with ambition on a global scale, you might just get Diageo’s attention… To date, three have made the grade: Starward in Melbourne, Denmark’s Stauning and now Westward American Single Malt from Oregon.

Westward debuted in 2012 when it was offered in 375ml bottles as a single barrel expression (the company had filled just five barrels at the time). With growing inventories, the whiskey is now a blend of six to eight barrels, which was always the plan according to founder and Master Distiller, Christian Krogstad. “Blends of multiple barrels not only allow for better consistency, but also enable us to take the best of each barrel and combine them" he explains. Done properly, the process allows for increased complexity.

Considering the global growth in single malts, it’s no surprise Americans are now pushing their own version. But there is a solid point of difference with Westward.
A craft beer background sees them employ two row barley with ale yeast and a belief that a better pot ale will translate to a better end product (if you removed the hops from Sierra Nevada you’d basically have their wash). Fermentations are long. Traditional double distillation is the norm, however their stills include a column on top of the pot filled with "copper wool” to create more copper contact and reflux. Post distillation sees the Kentucky maturation program utilising new first use two & three char 200 litre barrels (no fancy cask finishes here).

Unlike many micro upstarts who are keen to mature new-make at a pace to ensure a quick turnaround on their investment, Westward chose full size barrels over smaller alternatives. While the latter accelerate ageing (especially during Oregon's hot summers), they can also leave the impression of ”forced" maturation in the flavour profile.

Westward have also driven the regulatory area on minimum age requirement and taken it a step further than Scotland’s three year minimum to four years to qualify as American Single Malt. However, Krogstad adds, ”Ours is an intentionally young whiskey, roughly five years. We age in new oak barrels, and the longer it sits in there, the more it tastes like wood and the less it tastes like a grain.“ Consequently, Krogstad follows the lead of his hero, Jimmy Russell of Wild Turkey fame, picking barrels at their peak, rather than for the sake of greater age at a much higher price tag. Just like many 'young' Australian malts, it’s surprising how good the results are.

Retasted 2024... Different to just about anything out of Scotland or Europe, this single malt presents with vanilla oak, dried peach, mango and grassy freshness on the nose and palate. Never too heavy, the finish is lightly spiced and oily with a tang of citrus and grippy oak to balance. Tasted from a 30ml sample. 45% Alc./Vol.

First tasted 2019... Deep amber gold. Bold aromas of oak shavings, enticing poached fruits as well as clove and cinnamon... a touch of orange zest keeps things fresh. Air contact accents the ripe fruit aspect as peach / apricot. Lots of fruity malt to the palate countering the rich woody notes followed by hints of dried mango(?) and vanillan oak through the medium long finish. It's a flavoursome, barley-forward style that maintains some of the sweet spice notes associated with Bourbon. 92 points

Other reviews... A true American single malt; the impression of new charred barrels distinguishes this from its Old World counterparts, while the creamed honey, caramel, and candied nuts keep the wood in check. On the palate, the wood influence delivers big vanilla and hints of smoky char, coupled with nicely concentrated flavors of Turkey Golden table syrup, fruit, and spice. A nice rendition of New World single malt, showing proof and gusto.

...Made from 100% malted barley grown in the Pacific Northwest and fermented with ale yeast, this single-barrel single malt is brisk, flavorful and hints at beer. The palate is on the drier side, but pleasing, showing lots of vanilla and a hoppy note at the end chased by allspice and clove. 94 points- wineenthusiast.com

A final 6% of malted barley brings rich, sweet, toasted notes. Taking the expansive palate even further, this edition is finished in Spanish PX Sherry casks (sweet sherry) resulting in additional notes of caramel and smoked maple. Beautifully presented from the inside out and housed in an oval decanter, the outturn is reported to be around 10,000 bottles globally. 46% Alc./Vol. Very limited stocks.

Other reviews... "The nose is more brandy-like than whiskey-like with peaches, pears, and grapes and almost a mulled wine like aroma. The rye notes is there along with a smoky charred barrel aroma, but you've got to really get your nose in there. There's also a top note of honey which sits atop it all. Mind you, these are all pleasing aromas; just not ones you're used to finding in a whiskey. Moving on to the taste, this is where the rye kicks into gear. The darker grain notes are there along with some classic cherry and cola notes. The whiskey is on the dry, tannic side but the cask finishes have added some much needed sweetness making it overall just a little sweet. As you go back to grab another sniff and the mulled wine and honeyed fruit comes back again. Not entirely sure the flavors have quite meshed as it's a bit of back-and-forth on the flavors, but it's a not a bad way to spend the evening." 87 points - drinkhacker.com

Bourbon remains the cornerstone of the American whiskey industry. By law, both Bourbon (and Tennessee) whiskeys must be a minimum of 51% corn. Likewise, to be declared 'Rye' the mash bill must be at least 51% rye. Other grains like barley or wheat make up the shortfall. Regulations for maturation are simple yet strict - the new spirit must be aged in new charred oak barrels. Tennessee whiskey has an additional stipulation: It has to be filtered through charcoal before entering the barrels. Otherwise it's produced in an identical fashion to Bourbon. Other categories include White Dog, Moonshine and single malt American whiskey. The robust, full flavoured nature of most American spirits makes them compelling straight up, as well as a preference in a wide range of whiskey-based cocktails.

American Whiskey is growing in popularity.

Scotch whisky may be American whiskey's inspiration for long-term revival. The steady growth in sales of Scotch single malt and high-quality blended Scotch whiskies has not gone unnoticed in the States. Almost all of the Kentucky and Tennessee whiskey distilleries are now marketing high-end "single cask", "small batch" and older age statement whiskies that have found great success among upscale consumers. The United States may yet, in the words of one commentator, "turn away from foreign potions and return to its native spirit."
