Redwood Empire Emerald Giant Rye Whiskey (750ml)
Made from 95% rye / 5% malted barley and aged for over four years in new charred oak. A soft, fruity rye, reminiscent of Sazerac in its subtly peach-apple aromatics and soft rounded mouthfeel. On the palate, dried apricots combine with a slathering of sweet spices; light oils add succulence and length to the finish, leaving you with orange curaçao and cocoa. One of the highlights in the Redwood lineup. Add a few drops of water to accent the keynote grain. Matured in northern California. 45% Alc./Vol.
Other reviews… Aromas of fresh grain, red berries, dried cherries, and fresh-cut lemon, overall a very fresh and lively nose that is beautifully fragrant and redolent of fresh morning fields. The palate is equally fresh, with balanced notes of red fruit, iced tea, and vanilla. The finish is quite long, with more vanilla, and lemon sorbet, balanced by savoury espresso. A smooth but complex rye with depth and lively flavors, but easy to savor. 92 points - whiskyadvocate.com
...While the grain may be stark, the tobacco note tends to knock this whiskey sygogglin, as the moonshiners of the South Appalachians might say. Never seems to be on an even keel, though the odd sharp note is more than attractive. 86 points - Jim Murray's Whisky Bible 2023
Redwood Empire Distilling is in the heart of the Russian River Valley wine region in Sonoma County, California. Emerald Giant is aptly named after the fastest growing Redwood tree in the world. With a focus on sustainability, for every bottle sold, Redwood Empire Distilling will plant a tree. The rye itself is an easy sipper that offers just the right amount of spice with an interesting cast of supporting flavors. It may not be the most complex of ryes, however, its approachable price tag along with its four year age statement makes this whiskey an easy bottle to recommend picking up. - breakingbourbon.com
