- 2005 Leith Stillroom Foursquare Distillery Cask Strength Rum (700ml)BARBADOS$230. 00Bottle$2760.00 DozenABV: 63.3%
A cask strength whopper from Barbados bottled by Leith Stillroom at 63.3%! Consistently praised as a producer of some of Barbados's finest rums, the Foursquare distillery is also the home of famous brands like Doorlys and R.L. Seale. This edition was distilled in 2005 and bottled in 2019 with no chill filtration or colouring.
Notes from the bottlers... On the nose, deliciously rich and malty with fragrant vanilla and Christmas cake. Toffee apple and coffee coming through with undertones of sense oak and buttery molasses. In the mouth, toasted oak with cigar and coffee bean bitterness developing into burnt notes of spiced fruit, thick treacle and a subtle note of camphor; a touch of smoke lingers with a long sweet finish.
- 2003 Leith Stillroom Diamond Distillery Cask Strength Rum (700ml)GUYANA$180. 00Bottle$2160.00 DozenABV: 59.6%
The 'real deal' in rum is on offer in a range of very limited single cask editions from UK bottler, 'Leith Stillroom'.
This one's sourced from Guyana's only operating rum producer. Located on the east bank of the Demerara River near Georgetown, all of the country's historical stills were consolidated at DDL's Diamond Distillery around 2000. Unfortunately, Leith's label doesn’t state which still (or stills) this particular bottling was created with. What we do know is that is was distilled in 2003, aged in an ex-Bourbon cask for 16 years and bottled all-natural. Rum purists can expect a full bodied and potent Demerara expression.Notes from the bottlers... On the nose, fruity with red cherries and dates: coconut with ripe bananas and sweet melon; apricots with a hint of coffee beans developing into oak spices. On the palette, bananas with pineapple rind; molasses and sticky brown sugar; bitter dark chocolate and cinnamon, bursting with dried tropical fruit peels and gently spiced. 59.6% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

Lemon Hart Original Demerara Rum (700ml)GUYANA$79. 99Bottle$959.88 DozenABV: 40%Demerara styles are cherished by rum drinkers around the world for their bold, rich flavour and full-bodied complexity.
Lehman (“Lemon”) Hart’s destiny in the world of rum began close to 50 years before his birth on 31 October 1768 in Penzance, Cornwall, England. The year was 1720 when his grandfather, Abraham Hart, a young enterprising merchant who settled in Penzance from Germany, began importing and trading in rums sourced from various islands in the Caribbean. Some 80 years later Lemon Hart would transform the family business by creating a unique blend of the finest rums and subsequently receive the inaugural appointment from the Admiralty as supplier of rum to the British Royal Navy. Hart's efforts saw to the creation of his now famous British-style black rum, a premium blend of select single estate rums, distilled, Bourbon barrel-aged and blended on the East Bank of the Demerara River in the lush tropical country of Guyana. In 2010, the Canadian-based company Mosaiq Inc. acquired the Lemon Hart brand from Pernod Ricard and implemented “A Return to Heritage” initiative for the brand starting with the reestablishment of the Lemon Hart & Son company. Today, Lemon Hart & Son rums are considered among the more historically authentic expressions currently available.
While this fits the bill of a classic Demerara profile, it's toned down significantly at 40%. Its deep treacle appearance follows in moderate aromas of coffee flavoured milk, vanilla bean, date cake and sweet spices that carries through to a silky, seamless palate of the same; The spices pick up at the finish, where the sugars slightly recede, leaving you with Medjool dates, hints of ripe banana, cinnamon, clove and dark chocolate. Entry-level ABV makes for a feminine, characterful and dangerously drinkable option to more potent alternatives. 40% Alc./Vol.
Other reviews... Wow...Like no other rum you've ever tasted. An explosion of banana, vanilla, shortbread, candied almonds and toasted oat aromas. Excellent and highly recommended. 92 points - Ultimate Spirits Challenge.
Notes from the producers... Well-balanced, velvety smooth taste. Complex notes of dark brown sugar and island spices (nutmeg, clove and cinnamon), vanilla bean, cocoa, dark honey, caramel and oak. Hints of English toffee, dried fruits (especially Sultana raisins, dates and apricots), dark bitter semi-sweet chocolate and a nice heavily steeped tea finish.

Marie Galante Rhum Bielle Blanc Agricole Rum (700ml)GUADELOUPE$89. 99Bottle$1079.88 DozenABV: 40%Tasting note: Clear. Vivacious, diverse aromas are briny / caney / grassy with lemon chutney and hints of furniture wax. Lively and fresh in the mouth with exotic papaya, plantain and curry leaf flavours followed by a balanced, spicy finish. Choice for tropical cocktails. 40% Alc./Vol. 3.5 stars - diffordsguide.com Médaille d’OR au Concours Général Agricole de Paris 2011 et 2013. - 2003 Masam SRL Port Mourant 18 Year Old Cask Strength Guyanese Rum (700ml)GUYANA$350. 00Bottle$4200.00 DozenABV: 53.5%
Whichever way you spell it ('Morant' or 'Mourant'), anything this old from Guyana's legendary still is considered special, all the more so given that Diamond Estate is the only remaining rum producer in Guyana. Originally installed at the Port Mourant Estate (established in 1732), the nationalisation of the sugar industry lead to a centralisation of the various stills located around the country. It was first transferred to Uitvlugt, then in 2000 to its current home at Diamond Distillery along with all the other heritage stills and a modern multi-column set up. Built using Greenheart wood, a native to Guyana and mostly reserved for boat-building due to its ability to resist moisture, the wood is also well suited to distilling, stripping spirits of sulphites in the same manner that copper does. The Port Mourant and the Versailles single wooden pot still are the last of their kind in operation. The configuration of the former produces a typically heavy bodied and oily distillate, generally credited as being one of the definitive components in the old British Royal Navy blend. Nowadays, it's what makes El Dorado's brilliant 15 Year Old so tasty. Compared to the official cask strength release under El Dorado's 'single stills' label, the price of this considerably older Masam selection is very reasonable. Drawn from cask No. 26 and bottled at 53.5% Alc./Vol., 259 bottles are available globally. Nothing has been added nor has the liquid undergone chill filtration.
Notes from the importers... Nose: Tinned pineapple rings, damp grass, sugar cane juice, school bag fruit mix. Palate: Fermented fruit, graphite pencils, Chlorine, pear tarte tatin, pineapples. Finish: Custard finger bun.

Mhoba Select Reserve French Cask Aged South African Rum (700ml)SOUTH AFRICAReduced from $195.00$160. 00Bottle$1920.00 DozenABV: 65%As the label suggests, French oak maturation is the feature of this agricole-styled rum, which typically contributes more spice. The vessels in question are refurbished and re-toasted Cape red wine casks which hold the spirit for over twelve months. These must be produced in really tiny batches - in this case, just 24 bottles at a whopping 65% Alc./Vol.
Other reviews... I wasn’t entirely sure what to make of this. The minimal ageing toned down the rawness of an unaged spirit in a way that polished off some of the rough edges, so that was good; the additional fruitiness imparted by the Cape Brandy left in the staves (even after the sanding and scraping away of a few millimeters of impregnated wood) was nice – overall, it was a solid, strong drink. This, paradoxically, was also its weakness. The strength was so great that it overpowered the subtle notes that a mere year-and-a-bit of ageing had provided, and it failed to cohere in a way that would allow the individual taste components to shine more. Here then was a rum that I felt could either use some more ageing, or some water, and indeed I did put a few drops into my drink and it became much more approachable that way. Still, it remained something of an odd duck, hard to pigeonhole, tough to nail down precisely. It had aspects of an aged agricole, and points that reminded me of a Jamaican high-ester rum, all combined with the dampening anonymity of a column-still, high-proofed, lightly-aged filtered product from, say, Bacardi. - thelonecaner.com

Mhoba Strand 101 South African Rum (700ml)SOUTH AFRICA$180. 00Bottle$2160.00 DozenABV: 50.5%Another ‘paddock to bottle’ release from a largely unknown South African trail blazer. This time it's a combination of spirits from a single still – one part barrel aged and quite woody, the other part unaged, funky and high in esters. The two were blended with the aim of creating a "slightly off-kilter Smith & Cross Jamaican style" (the blue and gold colours of the label are a homage to the brand). Danish seller and importer, Knud Strand played a key role in determining the ratios in the mix - which is why his name is prominent. This particular release has really put Mhoba on the map in Europe having received high praise from bartenders, pro-rum critics and bloggers alike. As with all Mhobas, there's no added sweetener, flavour or colour and bottling is done without chill-filtration. 50.5% Alc./Vol. - but the ABV will vary from batch to batch.
Other reviews... It’s when you smell and then taste the Strand 101° (58% ABV) rum from South Africa’s Mhoba, that you begin to get an appreciation for what this relative newcomer has accomplished in so short a time. The initial punch is all pot still, all righteous reek, all the time — there’s no holding back and it’s just fascinating to inhale. It smells sharply of paint thinner, nail polish, turpentine and rancid fruit left to go bad in the sun…after a tropical rain, with the steam still coming off the ground. It contains the tartness of a lemon meringue pie mixed up with green apples and gooseberries and a flaky, buttery crust. Sugar cane sap, cider, sour cream, brine, and the rising aromas off a loaf of sourdough bread fresh from the oven. And over all that is the clear scent of candy floss and bubble gum. I mean, is that a great beginning or what? If I closed my eyes I could hear the Wailers... What’s clear to me is how good the rum really is. Just about everything works here, the strength, the still, the cuts, the assembly, the balance between babyhood and youth, herbals and woods. - thelonecaner.com
...I recall hearing that this might have been made for the cocktail crowd, as there isn’t much high-proof, sugarcane juice-based rum in the market. I definitely see the inspiration from Haus Alpenz’s Smith & Cross in this bottle: beyond the parallel blue and gold embellishment, as it’s high ABV, with a funky profile that works well as both a sipper and mixer. This is something for lovers of dirty distillate like Mortlach, Edradour and Clynelish. The wood influence takes on a mere supporting role, while most of the flavors here come from the blend of distillates. - malt-review.com
- Mhoba Bushfire South African Rum (700ml)SOUTH AFRICA$180. 00Bottle$2160.00 DozenABV: 55%
A pure cane juice pot-distilled rum with a nod to South African culture, where Braai (large barbecues) are a custom. To grill and smoke the meats, hardwoods such as acacia found in the bush are often used. In an effort to replicate this particular flavour, Mhoba decided to mature its rum in small casks containing toasted acacia wood. The result is aptly named 'Bushfire' and comes bottled at higher strength for added oomph. 55% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.
Other reviews... Being significantly darker than other "cousins" - looks somewhat fiery - it still shares some of their general characteristics of "core Mhobas". The taste is mainly woody, (very) meaty, (strongly) smokey and overall has promised "campfire mojo". All in all, quite flavourful, specific rum, which is always a positive. The finish is very ashy and dry. I have no idea what other non-Mhoba rum to compare with. This is for sure one of the less sweet, less mainstream (sic!) Mhobas. - rumratings.com

Mhoba American Oak Aged South African Rum (700ml)SOUTH AFRICAReduced from $160.00$120. 00Bottle$1440.00 DozenABV: 43%Producing since 2015, Mhoba continues to be a genuine hands-on operation. Even the labels are designed and printed on site. Rum boffins describe the spirit as "funky" with similarities to certain 'extreme' Jamaican styles or Rhum Agricoles. The latter would be more accurate, as the rums here are created from fresh Nkomazi cane juice grown at the estate. Distillation takes place using pot stills created by founder, Robert Greaves. This expression is initially aged in large glass bottles that also hold pieces of American oak, cut and charcoal toasted at the distillery. The liquid is then transferred to former South African whisky casks for a second ageing process that compliments the spirit with woody notes of a different kind. 43% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.
- Mhoba Select Reserve Glass Cask 60 South African Rum (700ml)SOUTH AFRICA$180. 00Bottle$2160.00 DozenABV: 60%
Interest in Mhoba's rums is gaining momentum globally. Nestled amongst the rolling hills of the Onderberg district of Mpumalanga, founder Robert Greaves initially intended to make a South African version of Cachaca. Years of experimentation led him beyond that vision. His rums have been summed up as "...well made, unmessed-with, cask strength, and very, very original." This edition is no exception. A sugarcane juice distillation aged for more than two years in large glass demijohns, virgin American oak staves cut and charred at the distillery were included in the vessels. The liquid was then transferred from these "glass barrels" to x-South African whisky casks for a finishing period.
Producing since 2015, Mhoba harvests the Nkomazi variety of sugar cane from a farm adjacent to the distillery. The cane is hand cut and pressed by an in-house mill. The cane juice (not molasses) is fermented in part by a local baking yeast as well as wild yeasts. Distillation is conducted with a pot still designed by Greaves. The particularity of this still is to favour a maximum reflux in order to develop heavy and aromatic distillates. 1000 bottles produced. 60% Alc./Vol.
- Mount Gay The Port Cask Expression Cask Strength Rum (700ml)BARBADOS$399. 00Bottle$4788.00 DozenABV: 55%
It's good to see other Caribbean producers following the lead of bottlers like Velier with unadulterated, high strength rums. Mount Gay's 'The Port Cask Expression' is the third release in the Master Blender Collection that began in 2018 with an unusual Islay whisky cask-finished rum. Once again, Trudiann Branker is behind the composition and this time she’s employed Port casks, primarily because they're rarely used at the distillery. In fact, at least one report suggests that this is the first time in Mount Gay’s long history that they’ve used Port casks for aging. Specifically, the rum is a combination of Port-aged and Port-finished liquid, distilled on a traditional column still and aged for five years in Tawny Port casks, blended with pot still rums, aged for 14 years, and then finished in Tawny Port casks for a final twelve months. The exact percentages of each aren’t specified. Apart from having nothing added, it also comes non-chill filtered for maximum flavour and mouthfeel. 6570 bottles are available globally. If you like your rum neat, this is recommended with a piece of dark chocolate. 55% Alc./Vol.
Other reviews... The Port influence isn’t immediately evident on the nose. It’s rich with baking spice, some stewed orchard fruit, and plenty of classic rum esters from the pot still. As it opens, more dried red fruits emerge with a bit of marzipan in the mix, but on the whole, it’s not nearly as jammy or fruit forward as some other wine-finished rums I’ve encountered. The palate isn’t as restrained, but the Port is still not the only star of this show. The same sweet apple notes that dominated Trudiann’s first Master Blender release shine through with the Port overtaking some of the traditional vegetal sugarcane notes and injecting currants, juicy prunes, and black cherry in their stead. At cask strength, there’s still that classic Mount Gay dryness and spice, despite the syrupy and sweet Tawny addition. It’s a velvety and beautifully balanced rum that finishes as rich as it starts with the Port influence on full display in a lingering rinse of raisin and cherry juice. - drinkhacker.com
- Mount Gay 1703 Rum (700ml)St. Micheal, BARBADOS$250. 00Bottle$3000.00 DozenABV: 43%Dating back to 1660, Mount Gay is one of the oldest estates in the Caribbean and certainly one of the oldest in Barbados. It was established by Dr. William Gay, thought to be a cousin of John Gay who wrote 'The Beggars Opera'. Originally called 'Mount Gilboa', the estate is located in the northern parish of Saint Lucy and was renamed in 1801. There is evidence that there was distilling equipment in the region in 1663, so rum has probably been in production at Mt. Gay since. A tattered little deed confirms that rum production on the estate was well underway in 1703.
The 1703 old cask selection commemorates the date where first evidence of distilling took place at the Mount Gay distillery. Master blender Allen Smith, has utilized aged rums ranging from 10 to 30 years matured in former bourbon casks giving the rum a cognac-like appeal. Mount Gay’s rum is fermented in oak vats, (many distilleries now are using stainless steel to maximise productivity). The wooden vats result in a varying ferment result due to the porous nature of the oak. Many believe this imparts desired flavour compounds in the rum and other spirits alike.

Reportedly, ”this is the sister still to the legendary Pennsylvania Michters copper column still that produced both Michters Whiskey (in its original form in Pennsylvania) and the equally if not more well-regarded Hirsch 16 and 20 Year Old Whiskey (which was produced at Michters and bottled years after the distillery shut down).” Despite being near retirement age, Don Pancho considers himself in his prime, ready to create a rum with no compromises. ‘Origenes’ is the latest result from his Panamanian operation which he reinvigorated as the 'Las Cabras distillery', already described as “one of the most important and revered rum distilleries in the world.”
The sugarcane is grown to very specific standards, hand-harvested then fermented with a yeast strain developed specifically for this rum ( Don Pancho also has a degree in microbiology). The middle-tier in the series is this 18 year old, described as offering aromas and flavours of honey, tea, soft cardamom, creamy vanilla, cola nut and brown spice. x Bourbon casks are used for maturation, with no additives, no colourings and no solera system. Readers who purchased the previous edition will be familiar with Luca Gargano's Papalin project, marking a return to the ancient tradition of rum blending, and with a transparency that's welcomed by rum purists. The inaugural release was a four year old, while the latest is a six year old with a twist - ex Sherry casks have been employed. The blend of seven barrels from three Clairin distilleries includes Sajous, Vaval and Casimir. Each was pot distilled and tropically aged for six years at the Port-au-Prince distillery in casks that previously held Oloroso sherry from the House of Lustau. As you'd expect from the provenance, this is a rum big on aromatics and complexity, ranging from rooty (ginger), medicinal (cough drop) and slightly camphoraceous notes through to more typical Clairin characteristics of vegetal sugar cane, toffee, curry, turmeric and cocoa. It should be blast for lovers of agricole or anyone intrigued by Caribbean styles of yesteryear. 54.1% Alc./Vol.
- Papalin Jamaica 5 Year Old High Ester Overproof Vatted Rum (700ml)JAMAICA$164. 99Bottle$1979.88 DozenABV: 57%
"...stereotypical Jamaican wildness. Not as complex as Great House, but kicks the bejesus out of Hampden 8yo." - rumratings.com
Focussing on the Jamaica High Ester style, La Maison & Velier's new Papalin blend includes three Jamaican rums – Worthy Park (WPL mark, 60-120 gr/hlpa), Long Pond (STCE mark, 550-700 gr/hlpa) and Hampden (C<>H mark, 1,300-1,400 gr/hlpa), all pot still distilled, all of which were aged for a minimum of 5 years. Proportions are not provided, but these total up 63 barrels bottled at 57% with no additives. This rum has blown tasters away with its explosive, funky, tropical-fruit-heavy style; Yes, there are some notes of solvent and glue, but it doesn't veer into the overly industrial side. Grab it while you can. 57% Alc./Vol.
Other reviews... Hey, it's about as subtle as as a car crash; punchy and wild, and to be honest, everything you'd expect of Jamaican high ester rocket fuel. And it is is good! Smell is super intense. Solvent and glue and sugar... Taste is intense! It's not as resolved as Hampden Great House, but hey, it's half the price! The difference is that this is darker, dirtier and less effervescent, but yet, it makes me smile; it's stereotypical Jamaican wildness. Not as complex as Great House, but kicks the bejesus out of Hampden 8yo, never mind anything out of Worthy Park. It's flavourful, and siper PUNCHY, and way better than anything else I can think of at this price. Overall: Pungent glue and volatiles, esters and sharp spice. This is Jamaican squared. Banana and pineapple and brown sugar and a touch of madness. - rumratings.com
...You won’t miss the “high ester” tag, which is explosive right at the outset. The nose of the rum is thick with overripe fruit, bubble gum, and cotton candy, just a few of the most iconic elements that define high-ester rum. From peaches to apricots to baked apples, there’s a full fruit salad here in the glass — and dripping in heavy syrup. The palate is plenty sweet and fruit-laden from the jump (not to mention hot on the tongue), but it settles into a groove in reasonably short order. Candied fruits, evoking fruitcake decor, are powerful on the tongue, though the rum finds more complex footing as notes of vanilla, milk chocolate, and some mint come quickly into focus. Still, this is “high ester” rum that never really shakes its notoriety, including plenty of bubble gum returning on the finish and a slick layer of white sugar syrup. Chewy peach rings linger on a lengthy fade-out.- drinkhacker.com

Papalin Jamaica 7 Year Old Navy Strength Vatted Rum (700ml)JAMAICA$159. 99Bottle$1919.88 DozenABV: 57.18%Here we have what is reported to be the first instalment in the Papalin series from Velier, capturing a middle-aged Jamaican blend at a bold Navy Strength of 57.18% ABV. While Luca Gargano is following the age-old practise of not specifying the provenance on the label, he has openly stated that the contents are from Hampden and Worthy Park, both aged at least seven years. The secret he's keeping is the ratio of the different rums used. Crafted from molasses via pot still distillation and combining estery, tropical fruit notes with funk in a vibrant, well rounded delivery, the dominance of Worthy Park is said to be notable. Both components were completely aged in their respective distilleries and bottled in June 2022. The outturn equates to 1200 bottles.
Other reviews... "Very nice jamaican blend. Both distilleries are well noted and through the finish you’ll get also some cherry notes. Very delicious, but i’m missing the complexity/full body. Also the finish is quite “short” and not so impressive. The 57% are integrated well." - rum-x.com
Notes from the bottlers... The nose is lively yet refined. Notes of vanilla, candied citrus fruit, nutmet, coffee and chamomile. On the palate the rum is rich and powerful. Cane sugar, salted caramel butter, pear, geranium and vegetal notes. The finish is long and rich with dandelion, lemon, vanilla, menthol, mineral and cocoa powder.

Located off the coast of Madagascar, the island of Mauritius is a relative newcomer to the global rum scene. Sugar cane was introduced from Java during the Dutch period (1598-1710), mainly to produce an alcoholic drink. During his service in the 18th century, the French Governor, Bertrand-François Mahé de Labourdonnais, was the first to support the development of the rum industry in Mauritius. From 1810, the country became a British colony and gradually transformed itself into a plantation economy with sugarcane as the primary crop. Later, in 1852, Dr Pierre Charles François Harel saw opportunities to create quality rums on the island. Today, it's home to six distilleries and remains one of the few countries to offer both Traditional and Agricultural style rums, dark, light and spiced, the latter usually infused with the island's abundant local crops of spices and coffee.

Distillerie Poisson (est. c.1860) is the oldest operation of its kind on Marie-Galante and custodian of one of the most venerable stills in the Caribbean. Built in 1916, not much has changed in the last century, but in 2007, Guadeloupe native, Jean-Cedric Brot purchased the distillery and committed to reinvigorating the storied spirits that made it famous. He has named his brand after Père Labat (Father Labat), a multi-talented French Dominican missionary who introduced Charentaise distillation, the same method used to make Cognac. It made for a rum that was more "floral and round instead of sharp and burning". Today, four kinds of cane are used: red, white, blue, and gray. Some are grown on the estate, some are purchased from local growers. All are hand-cut and brought to the distillery by ox-drawn carts. 72 hour fermentations yield a vin de canne at 5% abv. Distillation takes place in one of two copper creole column stills which have eleven stripping plates and four rectifying/enriching plates. The spirit comes off the still between 69% and 71% abv. The Rhum blanc is placed in open top wooden foudres for 10-15 days and demineralized water is added to bring it down to proof.

- Plantation Stiggins' Fancy Smoky Formula Pineapple Rum (700ml)Caribbean,$99. 99Bottle$1199.88 DozenABV: 40%
The fruit of a third collaboration between Alexandre Gabriel and David Wondrich, the 'Fancy Smoky Formula' is a variation on the original Stiggins’ Fancy Pineapple rum that sees Victoria pineapple rinds infused in Plantation 3 Star, then further distilled in Copper pot stills. A second fruit infusion takes place in Plantation's Original Dark rum for three months. Both the distillate and the fruit infusion are finally blended together. The difference here is that they're finished in casks that previously contained peated single malt whisky (in this case, x-Teeling Blackpitts casks) - hence the smokey accents. The result promises to take your Daiquiris to another level, or any other rum cocktail you’d care to mix it into. If you're wondering, the name is a tribute to the fictional Reverend Stiggins whose favourite drink was “pineapple rum” in the Pickwick Papers by Charles Dickens. 40% Alc./Vol.
Other reviews... Ripe golden pineapple flavors are cheerful and unmistakable from the glass. With balanced sweetness, there is tons of fresh pineapple aroma and flavor without being syrupy. Brown sugar and baking spice notes support this rum that is an overall celebration of tropical fruit. 96 points - Extraordinary, Ultimate Recommendation, 2020 Ultimate Spirits Challenge.
Notes from the producers... A rich and delicious bouquet, accented by smoky notes and aromas of tropical fruit, pineapple, citrus peel, and a touch of clove. The palate opens with a structured, pleasant sensation of ripe banana, pineapple, and spices layered in a smoky finish.
- 2007 Plantation Australia 14 Year Old Limited Edition Rum (700ml)Queensland, AUSTRALIA$160. 00Bottle$1920.00 DozenABV: 49.3%
Note: Product has come from a private collection and as such has some minor scuffing/scratches/handling marks. Actual product not pictured.
Australia has been producing sugarcane eau-de-vie for nearly 150 years, earning its rightful place on the world rum map. Plantation Australia 2007’s aromatic complexity owes its personality to the particular yeasts used during fermentation. The spirit is first fermented for 12 days with Schizosaccharomyces pombe, a very rare yeast in the world of rum, and dunders. It is then followed by a three-day fermentation with Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Distilled in 2007 and aged for 13 years in ex-bourbon barrels in the cellars of Beenleigh Artisan Distillery, twenty one casks were selected for this edition by Alexandre Gabriel. Once transported to Javrezac, in the Charente region of France, the liquid was aged for an additional year in 400L Maison Ferrand French oak casks. Molasses based and pot distilled, the resulting rum lands with an ester count of 166 g/hL AA and presents an assertive personality reflecting the richness of the Australian terroir and the savoir-faire of the makers at Beenleigh. 49.3% Alc./Vol.Notes from Plantation... Nose : Stone fruits such as peach, apricot with hints of fresh vanilla, coconut, raisins and floral notes of iris and lilac. Palate : Cooked fruits, citrus with hints of smooth cacao. Finish : Exotic fruits with notes of vanilla and hint of wood.
- 2002 Plantation Single Cask Trinidad 17 Year Old Rum (700ml)TRINIDAD$150. 00Bottle$1800.00 DozenABV: 48%
This column distilled rum was produced at Trinidad Distillers Ltd, matured in bourbon barrels for 13.5 years, then another 3.5 years in Ferrand's barrels followed by an unusual twist which saw it spend its last twelve months in a Tawny Port cask.
Notes from Plantation... Nose : Vanilla and chocolate, cocoa, winy, old cellar, molasses, spices like white pepper and cinnamon. Palate : Pastry-like yet dry with milky, chocolate, honey, coconut and nutty notes, peppery and green tones. Finale : Old Port, cocoa, pollen. 48% Alc./Vol.
Other reviews... The rum is thick in the nose without being intrusive. It combines fruity notes with spice and a light caramel sweetness. Oak resonates. Wine notes are also recognizable. The nose is very successful. No alcohol. On the palate, the rum is smooth. Trinidad makes the start with tropical fruits. Not overripe. Then comes a spicy, woody barrel note with a little sharpness, which releases aromas of berries and a pleasant sweetness that dominates the finish. It is elegant without being boring. The 48% are perfectly integrated and i guess the sugar is helping on that part. The rum ends pleasantly and vanilla oak notes say goodbye from this nice rum. Plantation has created a great rum. The Tawny Port Finish blends perfectly with the Trinidad Rum. The cognac barrel is rather discreetly represented. Clear purchase recommendation, because there is something for everyone. The rum is sweet but as a rum drinker who likes it rather dry I can clearly say that it is not too sweet. - rumratings.com
- 2000 Plantation Single Cask Jamaica 19 Year Old Rum (700ml)JAMAICA$210. 00Bottle$2520.00 DozenABV: 51.6%
According to at least one blogger, unlike the majority of Plantation's bottlings, this one is a drier style. Molasses based and produced at Jamaica's Clarendon Distillery via a pot still, it spent 18 years in bourbon casks followed by one year in 350 litre Ferrand casks that previously contained cognac from Borderies. These casks bring added sweetness along with rancio and flower notes. For those interested in the numbers, they are: 1251 g/HL AA; Esters : 256 g/hL AA and a final ABV of 51.6%. It comes labelled with Clarendon's 'MBK' marque accordingly.
Built in 1949, the Clarendon distillery is one of the Caribbean’s newer producers, built back in 1949 when it was running a single pot still built by Louisville, Kentucky coppersmiths, Vendome. Since 2009, it's been joined by a second, larger pot still of Indian manufacture and a modern five-column still. While National Rums of Jamaica has a 73% share, the remaining 23% is owned by their biggest customer, Diageo, who reserve the majority of Clarendon’s output for their Captain Morgan and Myers’s brands.
Notes from Plantation... Nose : Mango, passionfruit, Mirabelle plum, jam, heady flowers as lilac and lily of the valley, brandy tones. Palate: Very intense on the fruits, from acidulated plum to ripe pineapple and banana, light bitter almond and hint of caraway. Finale : Compote, flowers, aneth.
Carribbean Class.
Besides whisky - possibly the only other wood-aged spirit capable of arousing the same passions comes from ‘the reed which brings forth honey’ (without the help of bees)– mainly because it’s capable of a similar dizzying complexity and diversity that whisky achieves. Rums are as diverse as whiskies, and much depends on how the distiller and blender create their product. Rum is also thought to be the world's oldest spirit with its cultural heritage centered in the Caribbean and its history inextricably intertwined with colonialism, slavery and the creation of capitalism. If you haven't been inspired to try the aged rums of the Caribbean then you’ve got a lot to look forward to. This applies not only to those who’ve never moved beyond Bundaberg and Coke since high school, but more so to those who are serious about wine, whisky and brandy - in short, those of us who are passionate about ‘flavour’.
