Puerto de Indias Strawberry Gin (700ml)
    SPAIN
    $79. 99
    Bottle
    $959.88 Dozen
    ABV: 37.5%

Spain’s fourth biggest selling gin. Perfect in bright Summery cocktails.

This pink tinted gin is infused with strawberries grown in Huelva in Andalusia (reportedly they're the finest in Europe). It was conceived from a ‘mistake’: After a failed attempt at making a strawberry liqueur, the Master-distiller added the berry mash to a new gin and found the combination worked brilliantly. Puerto de Indias' hugely popular Strawberry edition is now part of the core range and complements the 'Classic' and 'Pure Black' gins in their portfolio. What makes this gin that little more special, is that Puerto de Indias insist on high quality, fresh ingredients in their products. Not just the strawberries but all the other botanicals are carefully sourced, including juniper, coriander, lime, grapefruit, orange peel and lemon peel. The result is perfect in Summer cocktails. You would expect no less from this Seville-based venture, already well known as a producer of Pacharan and Anisette, they've been producing spirits since 1880 making it one of the oldest distilleries in Andalusia.

Tasting note: Brilliant / crystal clear with the palest pink-straw coloured blush. Aromas of over-ripe strawberries with trace pink grapefruit and mandarine peel. A soft, silky, medium dry and fruity gin with distinct strawberry notes over distant botanicals. Moderate berry confectionary aftertaste. Shows good sweet/dry balance. 37.5% Alc./Vol.

    $1019.88 Dozen
    ABV: 45%
Made at Benromach (a distillery better known for their single malt whiskies). The botanical selection is inspired by Scotland’s mountains, forests and coastal fringes and features the likes of bitter orange, sea buckthorn, heather and rowanberries alongside the requisite juniper. Distilled in an affectionately named copper pot still, ‘Peggy’, Red Door is created using the vapour-infused method, which steams the neutral base spirit through the botanicals.

Tasting note: Clear. Dry and spicy aromas include coriander seed and white pepper over juniper, orris root and refreshing citrus peel. Medium to full bodied flavours of juniper, citrus and coriander with a peppery attack. Ends grassy, spicy, lean, crisp and medium long. Juniper and bitter peel aftertaste. 45% Alc./Vol.

    Remedy Gin (700ml)
    Victoria, AUSTRALIA
    $84. 99

    $1019.88 Dozen
    ABV: 44%
Hamish Nugent and Rachel Reed draw inspiration from their natural surroundings in the Alpine region in North East Victoria - hence, their first limited release gin includes botanicals such as mountain pepper berry, lemon myrtle, eucalyptus and finger lime as well as Shiso, apple, juniper and tea. The distillery is situated in the centre of Bright, replete with a bar and a coffee roastery.

Tasting note: Batch REM054. Leaps out of the glass with aromas of crushed eucalypt, lemon peel, white pepper and bright piney, sappy notes - one of the most powerful gin bouquets of the year. A viscous, silk-textured delivery, building with flavours of pine, lemon verbena and pepper. Finishes poised, delicate and long with hints of herbal tea, eucalyptus and tea tree leaf in the aftertaste. Very expressive, with the native floras deftly balanced along side traditional botanical notes. 44% Alc./Vol.

    Renegade Gin (700ml)
    London, UNITED KINGDOM
    $89. 99
    Bottle
    $1079.88 Dozen
    ABV: 42%

A gold medal winning gin from Doghouse Distillery in London. Made using a wheat spirit base that they distill themselves rather than outsourcing, fourteen botanicals are included in the mix: juniper, coriander, angelica and orris, as well as more unusual green, leafy items such as bay, sage, winter savoury and cardamom. These provide a fresh pine, herbaceousness on the palate. The addition of the West African pepper 'Grains of Paradise' contributes warmth. Given all those ingredients, it's surprising how fruity Renegade is on the nose; Our tasting from a 40ml sample revealed ripe red apples and poached pears over background potpourri. The palate is more classically styled with a tangy combination of pine resin, fresh herbs (thyme / sage) and perfectly tuned heat in a juniper-driven finale that's creamy-yet-dry. There's nice vibrancy throughout, making this very sessionable indeed. Try it with premium Indian Tonic Water and a sprig of rosemary. 42% Alc./Vol.

Royal Sedang 1888 Small Batch Gin (500ml)
    FRANCE
    $64. 99
    Bottle
    $779.88 Dozen
    ABV: 42.2%
Considered the first ever 100% Asian Botanical Gin, Royal Sedang is made using a long maceration of chosen botanicals in order to achieve full extraction of flavour components. The production process is a slow and careful one that can take six to eight weeks. Botanicals include lime, lemongrass, ginger, litchi, jasmine tea, coriander followed by a slow reduction with pure spring water. Aromatically, it's described as "...a meeting of Vietnamese and French cultures, reminiscent of entering into a fresh food market in Vietnam or enjoying a fruit breakfast at a hotel bar".

Tasting note: Clear. Asian styled aromatics leading with coriander, ginger root and lemon grass over background juniper. Second pass highlights mandarine. Soft entry with juniper and citrus, leaning towards lemon and mandarin through the tangy, spiced-up finish. Hints of coriander and pepper in a brisk aftertaste. Fresh and exotic. 42.2% Alc./Vol.

This is the first ever gin to use sakaki, a botanical derived from a flowering evergreen that grows in warm areas of Japan and plays an important role in the country's mythology. Sometimes referred to as a “unifier botanical”, it imparts 'foresty', woody and spicy flavours that make this gin an alternative to floral and citrus dominant styles. Fifteen botanicals make up the mix, including Allspice, Caraway, Cinnamon, Clove, Coriander Seed, Juniper, Lavender, Mikan, Sakaki, Sansho, Star Anise, Sudachi, Ume, Yoshino Cedar and Yuzu. Hartshorn Sheep Whey Gin (500ml)
    Tasmania, AUSTRALIA
    $99. 99
    Bottle
    $1199.88 Dozen
    ABV: 40%
Taking craft-production to a new scale is 'Hartshorn', a Tasmanian upstart making boutique batches of Vodka and Gin from their farm sheep whey. Ryan Hartshorn and family run what is presently the smallest distillery in Australia: batches of ten bottles are not unusual. The dedicated hands-on approach is extended to the packaging with every label hand painted.

Botanicals are vapour infused using a 50L glass column still (as opposed to steeped) giving the Gin a more delicate and subtle bouquet. Ryan adds, "Besides the juniper, my aim with this Gin was to only use Tasmanian native botanicals. I discovered some very impressive native berries, leaves and seeds however they could only be wild harvested which meant I could not get enough quantity to make it practical enough for an ongoing production. I have still been able to use some Tasmanian native botanicals however I have now broadened the list to only Australian native botanicals (plus the Juniper). I'm using six Native Australian botanicals with three of them never used before in any other Gin."

Tasting note: [Batch 1 tasted] Clear. Atypical gin aromas of banana pudding / fruit yoghurt over later scents of citrus peel, rosewater and subtle piney juniper. A creamy, light, floral-soft entry. Medium-dry, low-key flavours of fruit yoghurt, orange spice cake and delicate white pepper / pine-like notes balancing the finish. Hints of rosewater and juniper late in the aftertaste. An eclectic and original arrangement of unusual botanical notes. Unfiltered. 40% Alc./Vol.

    Silent Pool Gin (500ml)
    UNITED KINGDOM
    $79. 99
    Bottle
    $959.88 Dozen
    ABV: 43%

Established in 2014 as a sustainable project, Silent Pool Distillery is named after a nearby natural spring lake which is also the distillery's water source. Located in the southeast of England in the Surrey Hills countryside and produced entirely on site by Cory Mason, the gin employs 24 botanicals including lavender, chamomile, citrus, kaffir lime, local honey and juniper.

Unlike many other gins, Silent Pool is distilled using a column still. Mason comments, "Through precise control over a series of plates and cooling pipes, we are able to separate the exact flavour we want from each botanical that we use. In this way, we can break down the botanical, and capture only the section of it that we want to use in our gin.

The operation is run on a reclaimed wood-fired steam boiler from the 1970s, previously used to power a crane on Liverpool docks. Sustainable hardwood is sourced from the local Albury forest and gives the whole operation a very low carbon footprint as well as truly local credentials.

Tasting note Medium intense, peppery whiffs building with fresh juniper, lemon/lime peel, lavender and chamomile tea. Very piney on entry, with lemon and lime accented through the middle. Finish is drying, with lively spices and gentle cinnamon warmth. Ends pure, fresh and mildly sappy with pine and lavender lingering in the aftertaste. A well balanced sipper for elegant Martinis. 43% Alc./Vol.

    Sipsmith London Dry Gin (700ml)
    London, UNITED KINGDOM
    $79. 99
    Bottle
    $959.88 Dozen
    ABV: 41.6%

Sipsmith was established in London in 2009. The first copper-pot based distillery to start up in London in 189 years, it is one of only four gin distilleries located within the city limits. Situated on a residential street in West London on the site of a former microbrewery, it's also the site which later became the office of famous beer hunter and whisky writer, Michael Jackson.

Sipsmith's first two spirits are a Barley Vodka and a London Dry Gin (a Sloe Gin is expected soon). These are produced in small batches of fewer than 300 bottles from an English Barley mash that is created off-site. The company employs a German swan-necked copper-pot still. Referred to as 'Prudence' by the proprietors, she's caricatured on the brand's labels as a stylized pot-still with a swan’s neck and head.

Sipsmith’s London Dry Gin is made using 10 botanicals from around the globe: Macedonian juniper berries, Bulgarian coriander seed, French angelica root, Spanish liquorice root, Italian orris root, Spanish ground almond, Chinese cassia bark, Madagascan cinnamon, Sevillian orange peel and Spanish lemon peel. If the botanicals seem rather commonplace by contemporary Gin standards, the company vouches for their freshness, which, as we’ve been told by the producers of Australia’s successful West Winds brand, is an often underestimated factor in Gin production. Quite simply, the fresher the ingredients, the more potent the flavour infusion will be. Companies producing Gin on a grand scale, such as Beefeater or Gordon’s simply can’t secure the quantities of botanicals required in fresh form for year round production. Water purity is also considered key.

Geraldine Coates, who has written books about gin and runs the website ‘Gintime’, also considers the size and flexibility of new micro-distilleries like Sipsmith to be their real point of interest."It means they are producing the equivalent to caviar as opposed to tuna fish," she explains. "Small batch runs mean they can make many different varieties. They could even, theoretically, take on commissions for certain flavours. And bartenders in the UK love new types of spirit to play with."

Tasting note: Pours crystal clear with a slight viscosity evident. The nose offers a restrained elegance - fresh juniper is the initial focus followed by hints of citrus peel, lavender and rosemary. A soft entry leads into a light to medium bodied mid palate that's gently spicy, almost creamy in texture and building in concentration with flavours of juniper and citrus lozenge. Perfect balance. Finishes pristine, persistent and refreshingly dry. An understated and stylish gin straight up that also adds a creaminess to G&Ts. 41.6% Alc./Vol.

"One of the most intriguing spirits I have come across ...at the herbaceous/savoury end of the gin spectrum, with the umami flavours of the seaweed balancing well with soft, piney juniper notes." - theginqueen.com

Seaweed as a gin botanical is becoming more common. Scotland's Isle of Harris and Australia's own Manly Spirits are two notable examples of recent times, but both employ just one variety. Now there's a gin that takes the maritime theme to another level, using five varieties of seaweed. That gin is An Dúlamán, named after an Irish folk song about two seaweed harvesters. The coast around Sliabh Liag on the West coast of Ireland holds an extraordinary bounty for such foragers, assuming they have the knowledge of where and how to harvest these natural products of the ocean.

Distillers, James and Moira Doherty find each sea plant brings something specific to their gin's profile: Channel Wrack adds firmness, Sugar Kelp gives sweetness and Dulse spikes the blend with its savoury saltiness. Pepper Dulse is the most elusive local seaweed and yields a distinctive spicy, umami note. As this amazing plant thrives at the very edge of the shoreline hidden among rocks, it can only be harvested on a full moon when the tides withdraw. Then there's Carrageen Moss that provides a delicately nutty sweetness. Each seaweed is prepared separately, and the gin is distilled using the standard London Dry method, save for the vapour infused Carrageen Moss.

Bottled at 43.2%, Sliabh Liag's Forsyth-designed still likes a low ABV in the pot, running a narrow temperature band to manage the delicate seaweeds. To top it off, the distillers take a super narrow cut of only the purest spirit. The result is a perfectly balanced coastal gin that noticeably wears its Donegal origins on its sleeve. Each bottle is wax sealed and marked with a batch number linked to the lunar phases on a dark 500ml bottle, reminiscent of the glass vessels found along the Donegal shore during the wrecking of the Spanish Armada.

Tasting An Dulaman reveals aromas of ocean air and gentle cassia spice, and a palate with bright, soft juniper to the fore, fading slowly to reveal brisk salt, chestnut and oyster hints, and a buttery, smooth, umami-rich texture. Then there's some exotic, sweet Turkish delight notes on the clean finish. As a base, it works superbly with premium tonic water, lemon tonic or bitter lemon. Classic gin cocktails are a no brainer. It also makes a mighty Martini with a good splash of vermouth.

Maxime Chapoutier is part of a family of winemakers who have been working in the Rhone Valley since 1808. When a botanist was enlisted to carry out research on local plants, Maxime was indirectly inspired to conduct plant distillation trials from a specific plot. It led to the creation of Sothis gin, using a base spirit derived from organically grown grapes. Our tasting found low-key aromas of bitter lemon, juniper, light ginger and white pepper that follow into a silky, medium bodied palate hinting at citrus peel, thyme, pine needles and chamomile tea, wrapped up in a peppery, medium long finish. The style here is relatively understated, so avoid heavy mixing. Botanicals include juniper, aced, chamomile, yarrow, everlasting, wild thyme, verbena and sweet clover. On the nose, you get classic London dry keynotes of juniper, coriander seed, white pepper and orange peel as well as hints of curry leaf and liquorice root. The concentration at low ABV is also impressive, starting soft and oily but building into a sweeping fan of coriander seed and pepper warmth. It's momentarily bittersweet before the final stages end piney, fresh and spicy. Obvious Martini potential, otherwise recommended with lemon peel and a sprig of rosemary to emphasise the citrus and herb elements. 40% Alc./Vol.

That such a fantastic tasting gin has come from two absolute newbies is not as surprising as it should be; the Gin community is a welcoming one and Calle and Anna had already soaked up a lot of second hand wisdom before beginning their adventure. Calle is quick to name check sources of wisdom: “In Sweden we received a lot of help from Jon at Hërno, who has been a super partner in our journey. Strange Nature Premium Grape Gin (700ml)
    Marlborough, NEW ZEALAND
    $84. 99
    Bottle
    $1019.88 Dozen
    ABV: 44%

A gin not made, but grown - from Sauvignon Blanc grapes, and arguably the most exciting new gin to come out of New Zealand in some time. It all started when the Giesen brothers of Marlborough’s Giesen Wines were trying to strip the alcohol from sauvignon blanc to produce an alcohol-free product. The resulting liquid “was essentially a sauvignon blanc spirit”, says Rhys Julian, the general manager of Strange Nature. He adds, “At that point the wine-makers were discarding it, but we thought there was a really good opportunity to take that by-product and do something with it, because it retains heaps of those really tasty flavours from Marlborough sauvignon blanc." The team added juniper but then cycled through more than a dozen different botanicals trying to find the best combination. They ended up going back to basics, deciding that juniper and sauvignon blanc stand on their own merit. “Sauvignon blanc is really aromatic, it’s got those layers of grapefruit and tropical herbaceous qualities,” says Julian, “and so we settled on just one botanical, juniper, which is quite unusual and quite strange, hence our name, Strange Nature.”

Just as you'd expect, Strange Nature retains many of the quintessential notes of New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc - as the producers describe it: Partly tropical and zesty with hints of fresh pineapple, candied grapefruit and a touch of kaffir lime and blood orange; and part savoury and herbaceous with piney juniper, blackcurrant leaf and fresh green pepper. Our tasting from a 30ml sample found powerful aromas of ripe feijoa, also hinting at passionfruit and nectarine with a light pepper overlay. There's a citrus/tropical fruit interplay on the palate too, evoking grapefruit, lime zest, feijoa, crushed pine buds and hints of papaya seed through the fresh, warming finish. It's a full bodied, vibrant and distinctive gin that when tasted neat, maintains a good balance of juniper against the fruitiness of the grape distillate. Mixing with soda is simple yet effective, although too much dilution tends to over-emphasise the varietal character of Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc. Try loading up a highball glass with ice and a spritz of carbonated water garnished with a lime wedge. For a refreshing alternative, use East Imperial Grapefruit soda. Lovers of G&Ts should enjoy a generous pour over ice, topped off with a premium tonic, a lime wedge and a sprig of rosemary or thyme. 44% Alc./Vol.

Orange coloured, they have the zestiness of ordinary limes but they're as juicy as an orange and look similar to a mandarin. The Rangpur tree itself is native to India, and can fruit year round for up to 40 years (be on the look out for these at nurseries - they're also said to be make beautiful ornamental trees). Enter the Tanqueray team who in 2006 decided to produce a new styled Gin with the influence of Rangpur limes. Like all of Tanqueray's gins, it includes the standard Tanq botanicals distilled into the spirit rather than infused. This distinction traps the flavours into the gin in a way that allows them to shine through in a more natural, authentic way that’s impossible with infusions. This time round the results are 'lip-smackingly delicious', and if the blogosphere is any indication, Rangpur is up there with some of the most genuinely exciting Gin innovations of all time.

The gin pours perfectly clear and follows with a sweet and citrusy perfume of lime and mandarine juice combined with mixed peel. This is no London Dry, with the juniper almost totally eclipsed, becoming apparent only with aeration. The soft entry develops into a gently spicy attack; semi sweet, juicy tangerine & lime flavours are followed by a subtle juniper note on the finish that refreshes and relieves the sweetness. Excellent balance, this gets silkier with every sip. It would make for an intriguing martini moreso than G&Ts. We found it calls for some citrus bitters and demands experimentation. On its own remains undeniably exotic and charming. 41.3% Alc./Vol.

    Tanqueray Gin (700ml)
    London, UNITED KINGDOM
    $62. 99
    Bottle
    $755.88 Dozen
    ABV: 40%

Gin became popular in the late 17th and early 18th centuries, following the increase in duty on French wine and brandy imposed by William III. Until about the beginning of the present century most gin made in England was sweetened, but sweetened gin then became almost wholly displaced in popular favour by dry gin. One of the finest examples of this style is Tanqueray.

Charles Tanqueray established his distillery in Finsbury, North London where fresh water was then accessible. The year was 1830. Tanqueray was obsessed with producing a premium product, and after some research and success, he gained substantial recognition for his gin. After merging with Gordons in 1898, the U.S. market opened up and Tanqueray was enjoyed by such personalities as Bob Hope, Frank Sinatra and President Kennedy. The distinctive bottle shape has aided its ongoing market success - its design based on 19th century London fire hydrants.

In the production of Tanqueray, grain spirit at 96% alc/vol is rectified in pot stills with botanical flavourings. Spirit and botanicals are then boiled, with aromas and flavours infusing in spirit vapours then condensing to form gin. Tanqueray use aged botanicals, maturing wild Tuscan juniper berries for two years before use. Coriander, angelica root, cassia bark, cinnamon, liquorice, lemon and orange peel also determine Tanqueray's quintessentially English style.ginspecials2010

A robust gin with a great appeal as a bold gin & tonic. 40% alc./vol. [As Tanqueuray is drier than most gins, we feel it makes a great Martini.]

Bellarine Distillery Teddy & The Fox Bellarine Gin (700ml)
    Bellarine Peninsula, Victoria, AUSTRALIA
    $92. 99
    Bottle
    $1115.88 Dozen
    ABV: 42%
This new craft distillery based on the Bellarine Peninsula is named after the founder's beloved dog, Teddy, who enjoys chasing foxes off the property. The main botanicals are juniper, orange, lemon myrtle, coriander, star anise and orris root.

Tasting note: Bright citrus aromas over light juniper and complexing dried herbs. Medium bodied, with lots of ripe lemon (lemonade icy poles / fruit tingle), low-key juniper, coriander and moderate pepper warmth. An easy going citrus-led stye for Summer cocktails. 42% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... On the nose the orange aromas abound with sherberty lemon myrtle in the background. To taste the orange and juniper are at the fore before more citrus zest notes from the coriander and lemon myrtle evolve. There is a good dose of warmth and spice on the lengthy finish. It’s well-balanced, with a great mouthfeel....Lorelle’s uses fractional distillation (all the botanicals are distilled separately before being blended together) and grape based spirit ( Melbourne Gin company also uses this base) which gives a great mouth feel and a super neutral canvas that allows the botanicals to shine.... It works well in a gin and tonic garnished with rosemary – fennel would also work. Try it with soda as this would open out the flavours even more.

    The Botanist Gin (700ml)
    Islay, SCOTLAND
    $89. 99
    Bottle
    $1079.88 Dozen
    ABV: 46%

The once mothballed Bruichladdich Distillery on Islay is better known for its idiosyncratic and eclectic range of single malts. Now they’re making a gin that’s the talk of the town.

Mark Reynier, one of the key instigators in this distillery’s recent revival, explains, “Botanist gin came about because we are curious about distilling.  For us it is not a question of merely pushing buttons, we like to test our distilling skills, we are intrigued.  With Trestaraig and X4 we have explored triple and quadruple distillation, so with a Lomond still that we had liberated from Inverleven in 2003, we were wondering how to use it. It was an experimental still, the first of its kind and now the last”.

The resulting gin uses nine of the classic gin aromatics – orris root, cassia bark, coriander seed, etc – and augments these with a heady harvest of 22 wild, native island botanicals, hand-picked by Bruichladdich’s expert foraging team from the windswept hills, peat bogs and atlantic shores of this Hebridean island of Islay. These include wild Islay Juniper, Elderflower, Bog Myrtle, Tansy, Hawthorn Flower, Birch Leaves, White Clover, Sweet Cicely and Lady's Bedstraw, amongst others.

This truly seasonal and exotic cocktail is then slow "simmer" distilled in the lomond pot-still, nicknamed "ugly betty". Head distiller, Jim McEwan explains, “Betty prefers to work at low-pressure and won’t be rushed. So our precious botanicals are slowly and gently coaxed into releasing their complex, signature aromatics. Jim says he had to "learn a new dance" with Betty, and none of us knew what to expect from that first, achingly-slow 17 hour distillation.

The result: a highly distinctive, complex, floral gin with outstanding finish and impeccable provenance. In an age of re-badged industrial gins, the Botanist stands out as a truly artisanal, small-batch, hand-crafted labour of love and distiller's art. A breath of botanical Islay in every glass.

Tasting note: [30ml sample] Crystal clear, slightly viscous appearance. Powerful bouquet opens with fresh juniper and thyme followed by orange peel, coriander and pine. Excellent complexity and purity. Medium dry, concentrated profile delivers a creamy-yet-peppery mouthfeel with a nice balance between citrus peel and juniper. Orange peel on the finish leads into a subtle, persistent peppermint / eucalypt aftertaste. Great stuff - and if you're mixing, it lends a lovely creaminess to G&T’s. 46% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... a superbly clean and juniper led gin; while it features "22 native botanicals", The Botanist is distinctly London Dry in style. 5 Stars - diffordsguide.com

"With all of the botanicals used, it can take a while to move from nosing to tasting as there is a lot to discover. The key things that will stick with you are a fresh, lemony aroma coupled with spring flowers and a touch of mint. As you taste, the gin is clean and not too oily with more of the lemon floral notes sticking out. The juniper certainly falls to a background player here, but this gin, even with the dozens of botanicals used, doesn't get muddied. This is a gin that would work wonders in a sour or Collins preparation." 92 points - distiller.com

    ABV: 48%
Distilled with 13 botanicals, rather than four or five which is more typical, this wonderful new Australian gin includes natives such as lemon and anise myrtle, sage and pepperberry, while the citrus profile is derived from kaffir lime and ruby red grapefruit, which distiller and owner, Kylie Sepos says is a lot softer than using lemon or lime citrus. The signature botanical is native bee sugar bag honey.

Kylie has developed cocktail recipes for the gin but her personal favourite is the negroni. “It stands up really well with the Campari,” she says “which can be quite overbearing with a lot of gins, so I wanted to make sure my gin had enough botanical presence that it can stand up to that Campari, which I am really happy to say that it does.”

Tasting note: [Batch 10] Fresh juniper and pepperberry aromas over hints of anise, lemon sorbet, grapefruit and white pepper. Vivacious , full bodied and deliciously textural with a superb medley of herbal / citrus / pepperberry and piney juniper flavours. Ends creamy yet vibrant with lime juice, hints of anise, beeswax and pine buds in a lingering, fresh, tangy aftertaste. Great new gin. 48% Alc./Vol.
The Melbourne Gin Company MGC Dry Gin (700ml)
    Victoria, AUSTRALIA
    $71. 99
    Bottle
    $863.88 Dozen
    ABV: 42%
Launched in July 2013, ''MGC'' doffs its hat to the London Dry style with the two major components being juniper berries and coriander seed. There are 11 botanicals in total with the grapefruit peel and rosemary coming from the garden at Gembrook Hill Vineyard. The other botanicals are macadamia, sandalwood, honey lemon myrtle and organic navel orange, all sourced from Australia. The exotics in the mix are angelica root, orris root and cassia bark.

Each botanical is distilled separately and then blended to a proprietary recipe – essentially a winemakers approach. They employ a copper pot baine-marie alembic still traditionally used for making perfume. This allows the preservation of the delicate nature of the botanicals.

The final component is the water used to break the gin back. MGC use Gembrook rainwater which is pure and fresh and allows the botanicals to shine through. At only 60kms from Melbourne this local source contributes to the definition of the unique “Melbourne Dry Gin” style.

The final product is not chill filtered.

"We didn’t want to take out the oils that contribute so much to the aromatics and mouth feel of the gin" comments distiller, Adam Marks. "So when the gin is very cold the oils become slightly insoluble and form a light haze. The French use the word louche to describe this. In a different context someone who is louche is of a shady character! Each bottle is numbered to reflect the small batches in which it is made."

We look forward to tasting this new Aussie gem soon!

Sloe Gins have followed the resurgence of their London Dry relatives with new releases appearing from around the globe; including Australia. If you're new to this quintessentially British recipe, you'll soon realise the two are related by suffix alone, with the majority of brands available producing a sometimes overly sweet, liqueur-like style. There are a few exceptions, and Two Accents is one, inspired by the Barossa’s big, bold rockstar reds - in this case, Cimicky Wines’ ultra-premium Shiraz. The nose captures the grape's brambly red fruit character, countered by drier, woody juniper notes and hints of apple (orchard fruits are also in the mix). Light and breezy, the palate is reminiscent of Rosso Vermouth, only with more punch, as background citrus adds zest to notes of dried cranberry and plum before a subtle ruby port character enters. Add water and the palate actually feels more expansive. All up, it's a fresh, pure, easy-going Summer style that tastes more like gin than a liqueur - which is how Sloe should be. Enjoy over ice or try it in a Sloe Gin Fizz. 41% Alc./Vol.

The English word 'gin' is derived from the French word 'genievre' meaning juniper, the original herb used by the ancient distillers to make their medicines. It must still be the most prominent flavour in gin under EC regulations. London Dry gin is a style of gin and not a geographical description. The term 'dry' is a reference from the old days when the most popular gin was 'Old Tom' which was sweetened with sugar and glycerine. Dry gin was so named to distinguish it from the sweet version.

Tasting note: Crystal clear. An initial whiff of dried juniper, lemon peel and pine needle is followed by sweet, caramel like scents. Neither fresh nor distinctive as gin should be. Palate is faintly fruity in a blanco tequila kind of way and on the sweeter side with hints of marshmallow and little juniper to speak of. Warm, spicy mouthfeel. Meek citrus and juniper are followed by a peppery, citrus and pine needle aftertaste. With so many wonderful gins now available, it's a wonder why any one would bother with this. 37% Alc./Vol.

The resulting gin delivers strong notes of candied orange, a touch of white pepper and a solid backbone of juniper with a pleasant oily texture that cools the mouth. We're serious about gin.

Distilleries both small and large from every continent on earth can now lay claim to a Gin. You could be cynical and suggest it's merely to maintain cash flow while more 'serious' barrel aged spirits mature. Gin is easy and cheap. After all, it's just flavoured vodka at the end of the day, right? That line of thinking misrepresents all this spirit can be in the hands of visionaries and fanatics. The freshest botanicals in high quality alcohol result in an exotic amalgam of accents and supporting notes that no white spirit can match. Perfumed complexity and bracing intensity are not the characteristics of every gin we taste - hence, it can't be that easy to achieve. From Navy Strength to organic to sloe gin, browse our range today. A long departure from the once "fuddy-duddy" association of the genre, Vickers, Gordon's and other ubiquitous brands are threatened to be swallowed in a giant yawn by the progressive, quality-savvy new-gin devotee. Trending classifications such as 'New Western' style (juniper evident but not dominant) are gaining prominence as are the use of indigenous botanicals and varied spirit bases, including non-grain. Barrel ageing is also gaining momentum. The vast improvement in quality has resulted in texture rich, neat/sipping friendly spirits. Yet, the traditional English and Dutch styles remain more relevant than ever in honouring the cocktail classics. Learn more today...
