  Taking craft-production to a new scale is 'Hartshorn', a Tasmanian upstart making boutique batches of Vodka and Gin from their farm sheep whey. Ryan Hartshorn and family run what is presently the smallest distillery in Australia: batches of ten bottles are not unusual. The dedicated hands-on approach is extended to the packaging with every label hand painted.

  Botanicals are vapour infused using a 50L glass column still (as opposed to steeped) giving the Gin a more delicate and subtle bouquet. Ryan adds, "Besides the juniper, my aim with this Gin was to only use Tasmanian native botanicals. I discovered some very impressive native berries, leaves and seeds however they could only be wild harvested which meant I could not get enough quantity to make it practical enough for an ongoing production. I have still been able to use some Tasmanian native botanicals however I have now broadened the list to only Australian native botanicals (plus the Juniper). I'm using six Native Australian botanicals with three of them never used before in any other Gin."

  Tasting note: [Batch 1 tasted] Clear. Atypical gin aromas of banana pudding / fruit yoghurt over later scents of citrus peel, rosewater and subtle piney juniper. A creamy, light, floral-soft entry.   Sipsmith was established in London in 2009. The first copper-pot based distillery to start up in London in 189 years, it is one of only four gin distilleries located within the city limits. Situated on a residential street in West London on the site of a former microbrewery, it's also the site which later became the office of famous beer hunter and whisky writer, Michael Jackson.

  Sipsmith's first two spirits are a Barley Vodka and a London Dry Gin (a Sloe Gin is expected soon). These are produced in small batches of fewer than 300 bottles from an English Barley mash that is created off-site. The company employs a German swan-necked copper-pot still. Referred to as 'Prudence' by the proprietors, she's caricatured on the brand's labels as a stylized pot-still with a swan’s neck and head.

  Sipsmith’s London Dry Gin is made using 10 botanicals from around the globe: Macedonian juniper berries, Bulgarian coriander seed, French angelica root, Spanish liquorice root, Italian orris root, Spanish ground almond, Chinese cassia bark, Madagascan cinnamon, Sevillian orange peel and Spanish lemon peel. If the botanicals seem rather commonplace by contemporary Gin standards, the company vouches for their freshness, which, as we’ve been told by the producers of Australia’s successful West Winds brand, is an often underestimated factor in Gin production. Quite simply, the fresher the ingredients, the more potent the flavour infusion will be. Companies producing Gin on a grand scale, such as Beefeater or Gordon’s simply can’t secure the quantities of botanicals required in fresh form for year round production. Water purity is also considered key.

  Geraldine Coates, who has written books about gin and runs the website ‘Gintime’, also considers the size and flexibility of new micro-distilleries like Sipsmith to be their real point of interest."It means they are producing the equivalent to caviar as opposed to tuna fish," she explains. "Small batch runs mean they can make many different varieties. They could even, theoretically, take on commissions for certain flavours. And bartenders in the UK love new types of spirit to play with."

  Tasting note: Pours crystal clear with a slight viscosity evident. The nose offers a restrained elegance - fresh juniper is the initial focus followed by hints of citrus peel, lavender and rosemary. A soft entry leads into a light to medium bodied mid palate that's gently spicy, almost creamy in texture and building in concentration with flavours of juniper and citrus lozenge. Perfect balance.   Maxime Chapoutier is part of a family of winemakers who have been working in the Rhone Valley since 1808. When a botanist was enlisted to carry out research on local plants, Maxime was indirectly inspired to conduct plant distillation trials from a specific plot. It led to the creation of Sothis gin, using a base spirit derived from organically grown grapes. Our tasting found low-key aromas of bitter lemon, juniper, light ginger and white pepper that follow into a silky, medium bodied palate hinting at citrus peel, thyme, pine needles and chamomile tea, wrapped up in a peppery, medium long finish.   Tasting note: Produced at Stockholm's first craft distillery using organic wheat spirit, this Nordic take on traditional dry gin employs seven botanicals including heather, elderflower and rosemary. On the nose, you get classic London dry keynotes of juniper, coriander seed, white pepper and orange peel as well as hints of curry leaf and liquorice root. The concentration at low ABV is also impressive, starting soft and oily but building into a sweeping fan of coriander seed and pepper warmth. It's momentarily bittersweet before the final stages end piney, fresh and spicy.   A gin not made, but grown - from Sauvignon Blanc grapes, and arguably the most exciting new gin to come out of New Zealand in some time. It all started when the Giesen brothers of Marlborough’s Giesen Wines were trying to strip the alcohol from sauvignon blanc to produce an alcohol-free product. The resulting liquid “was essentially a sauvignon blanc spirit”, says Rhys Julian, the general manager of Strange Nature. He adds, “At that point the wine-makers were discarding it, but we thought there was a really good opportunity to take that by-product and do something with it, because it retains heaps of those really tasty flavours from Marlborough sauvignon blanc." The team added juniper but then cycled through more than a dozen different botanicals trying to find the best combination. They ended up going back to basics, deciding that juniper and sauvignon blanc stand on their own merit. “Sauvignon blanc is really aromatic, it’s got those layers of grapefruit and tropical herbaceous qualities,” says Julian, “and so we settled on just one botanical, juniper, which is quite unusual and quite strange, hence our name, Strange Nature.”

  Just as you'd expect, Strange Nature retains many of the quintessential notes of New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc - as the producers describe it: Partly tropical and zesty with hints of fresh pineapple, candied grapefruit and a touch of kaffir lime and blood orange; and part savoury and herbaceous with piney juniper, blackcurrant leaf and fresh green pepper. Our tasting from a 30ml sample found powerful aromas of ripe feijoa, also hinting at passionfruit and nectarine with a light pepper overlay. There's a citrus/tropical fruit interplay on the palate too, evoking grapefruit, lime zest, feijoa, crushed pine buds and hints of papaya seed through the fresh, warming finish. It's a full bodied, vibrant and distinctive gin that when tasted neat, maintains a good balance of juniper against the fruitiness of the grape distillate. Mixing with soda is simple yet effective, although too much dilution tends to over-emphasise the varietal character of Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc. Try loading up a highball glass with ice and a spritz of carbonated water garnished with a lime wedge. For a refreshing alternative, use East Imperial Grapefruit soda. Lovers of G&Ts should enjoy a generous pour over ice, topped off with a premium tonic, a lime wedge and a sprig of rosemary or thyme. 44% Alc./Vol.

  The Rangpur lime is not like the lime you'll find at your local fruit and veggie market. It's a unique fruit that blends attributes of other citrus - in fact it’s believed that Rangpur limes are crosses between lemons and tangerines. Orange coloured, they have the zestiness of ordinary limes but they're as juicy as an orange and look similar to a mandarin. The Rangpur tree itself is native to India, and can fruit year round for up to 40 years (be on the look out for these at nurseries - they're also said to be make beautiful ornamental trees). Enter the Tanqueray team who in 2006 decided to produce a new styled Gin with the influence of Rangpur limes. Like all of Tanqueray's gins, it includes the standard Tanq botanicals distilled into the spirit rather than infused. This distinction traps the flavours into the gin in a way that allows them to shine through in a more natural, authentic way that’s impossible with infusions. This time round the results are 'lip-smackingly delicious', and if the blogosphere is any indication, Rangpur is up there with some of the most genuinely exciting Gin innovations of all time.

  The gin pours perfectly clear and follows with a sweet and citrusy perfume of lime and mandarine juice combined with mixed peel. This is no London Dry, with the juniper almost totally eclipsed, becoming apparent only with aeration. The soft entry develops into a gently spicy attack; semi sweet, juicy tangerine & lime flavours are followed by a subtle juniper note on the finish that refreshes and relieves the sweetness. Excellent balance, this gets silkier with every sip. It would make for an intriguing martini moreso than G&Ts. We found it calls for some citrus bitters and demands experimentation. On its own remains undeniably exotic and charming. 41.3% Alc./Vol.

  Gin became popular in the late 17th and early 18th centuries, following the increase in duty on French wine and brandy imposed by William III. Until about the beginning of the present century most gin made in England was sweetened, but sweetened gin then became almost wholly displaced in popular favour by dry gin. One of the finest examples of this style is Tanqueray.

  Charles Tanqueray established his distillery in Finsbury, North London where fresh water was then accessible. The year was 1830. Tanqueray was obsessed with producing a premium product, and after some research and success, he gained substantial recognition for his gin. After merging with Gordons in 1898, the U.S. market opened up and Tanqueray was enjoyed by such personalities as Bob Hope, Frank Sinatra and President Kennedy. The distinctive bottle shape has aided its ongoing market success - its design based on 19th century London fire hydrants.

  In the production of Tanqueray, grain spirit at 96% alc/vol is rectified in pot stills with botanical flavourings. Spirit and botanicals are then boiled, with aromas and flavours infusing in spirit vapours then condensing to form gin. Tanqueray use aged botanicals, maturing wild Tuscan juniper berries for two years before use.   The once mothballed Bruichladdich Distillery on Islay is better known for its idiosyncratic and eclectic range of single malts. Now they’re making a gin that’s the talk of the town.

  Mark Reynier, one of the key instigators in this distillery’s recent revival, explains, “Botanist gin came about because we are curious about distilling.  For us it is not a question of merely pushing buttons, we like to test our distilling skills, we are intrigued.  With Trestaraig and X4 we have explored triple and quadruple distillation, so with a Lomond still that we had liberated from Inverleven in 2003, we were wondering how to use it. It was an experimental still, the first of its kind and now the last”.  

  The resulting gin uses nine of the classic gin aromatics – orris root, cassia bark, coriander seed, etc – and augments these with a heady harvest of 22 wild, native island botanicals, hand-picked by Bruichladdich’s expert foraging team from the windswept hills, peat bogs and atlantic shores of this Hebridean island of Islay. These include wild Islay Juniper, Elderflower, Bog Myrtle, Tansy, Hawthorn Flower, Birch Leaves, White Clover, Sweet Cicely and Lady's Bedstraw, amongst others.

  This truly seasonal and exotic cocktail is then slow "simmer" distilled in the lomond pot-still, nicknamed "ugly betty". Head distiller, Jim McEwan explains, “Betty prefers to work at low-pressure and won’t be rushed. So our precious botanicals are slowly and gently coaxed into releasing their complex, signature aromatics. Jim says he had to "learn a new dance" with Betty, and none of us knew what to expect from that first, achingly-slow 17 hour distillation.

  The result: a highly distinctive, complex, floral gin with outstanding finish and impeccable provenance. In an age of re-badged industrial gins, the Botanist stands out as a truly artisanal, small-batch, hand-crafted labour of love and distiller's art. A breath of botanical Islay in every glass.

  Distilled with 13 botanicals, rather than four or five which is more typical, this wonderful new Australian gin includes natives such as lemon and anise myrtle, sage and pepperberry, while the citrus profile is derived from kaffir lime and ruby red grapefruit, which distiller and owner, Kylie Sepos says is a lot softer than using lemon or lime citrus. The signature botanical is native bee sugar bag honey.

  Kylie has developed cocktail recipes for the gin but her personal favourite is the negroni. “It stands up really well with the Campari,” she says “which can be quite overbearing with a lot of gins, so I wanted to make sure my gin had enough botanical presence that it can stand up to that Campari, which I am really happy to say that it does.”

  Launched in July 2013, ''MGC'' doffs its hat to the London Dry style with the two major components being juniper berries and coriander seed. There are 11 botanicals in total with the grapefruit peel and rosemary coming from the garden at Gembrook Hill Vineyard. The other botanicals are macadamia, sandalwood, honey lemon myrtle and organic navel orange, all sourced from Australia. The exotics in the mix are angelica root, orris root and cassia bark.

  Each botanical is distilled separately and then blended to a proprietary recipe – essentially a winemakers approach. They employ a copper pot baine-marie alembic still traditionally used for making perfume. This allows the preservation of the delicate nature of the botanicals.

  The final component is the water used to break the gin back. MGC use Gembrook rainwater which is pure and fresh and allows the botanicals to shine through. At only 60kms from Melbourne this local source contributes to the definition of the unique “Melbourne Dry Gin” style.

  The final product is not chill filtered.

  "We didn’t want to take out the oils that contribute so much to the aromatics and mouth feel of the gin" comments distiller, Adam Marks. "So when the gin is very cold the oils become slightly insoluble and form a light haze. The French use the word louche to describe this. In a different context someone who is louche is of a shady character! Each bottle is numbered to reflect the small batches in which it is made."

  Sloe Gins have followed the resurgence of their London Dry relatives with new releases appearing from around the globe; including Australia. If you're new to this quintessentially British recipe, you'll soon realise the two are related by suffix alone, with the majority of brands available producing a sometimes overly sweet, liqueur-like style. There are a few exceptions, and Two Accents is one, inspired by the Barossa’s big, bold rockstar reds - in this case, Cimicky Wines’ ultra-premium Shiraz. The nose captures the grape's brambly red fruit character, countered by drier, woody juniper notes and hints of apple (orchard fruits are also in the mix). Light and breezy, the palate is reminiscent of Rosso Vermouth, only with more punch, as background citrus adds zest to notes of dried cranberry and plum before a subtle ruby port character enters. Add water and the palate actually feels more expansive. All up, it's a fresh, pure, easy-going Summer style that tastes more like gin than a liqueur - which is how Sloe should be.   If you're going to start a small-batch distillery in McLaren Vale, there's one type of tipple that's a no-brainer: Shiraz gin. Which is why Two Accents took advantage of the region's grapes. Both the regular shiraz gin and this limited edition barrel-aged variety use fruit from local vines as evidenced by their crimson hue. This bottling has been batch-distilled and crafted using local botanicals and world-renowned Barossa Shiraz. To finish it off, the liquid was placed in five-year-old x-Shiraz American oak barrels for a minimum of three months, creating a smooth vanilla and berry infused style. On the nose, it's not dramatically different to the standard Two Accents Shiraz Gin, although it does feel a little richer with subtle charred oak aromas adding further complexity. Likewise on the palate which is more full bodied and reveals more winey sweetness, but nothing is overdone, and the gin base is allowed a good showing to keep things fresh. Citrus, potpourri, white pepper and woody juniper carry a medium long finish. The flavours hold up well with minimal water, giving the gin a light tawny port / vermouth character. Over ice, or perhaps garnished with red berries, this drier-styled Sloe expression will work as a refreshing aperitif. 41% Alc./Vol.

  Other reviews... Does this bottle look familiar? Does the name sound familiar, too? Ah, you’re probably thinking about Uncle Val’s Botanical Gin, which we reviewed upon release in 2012. Uncle Val’s Restorative Gin offers a somewhat different formulation. In lieu of juniper, cucumber, lemon, sage, and lavender — the key ingredients in Botanical — Restorative offers juniper, coriander, cucumber, and rose petals. If that sounds a lot like Hendrick’s, that’s because it is a lot like Hendrick’s. And once again, my tasting notes run to some unexpected places that are not wholly in keeping with the botanical bill. The nose presents juniper and lemony citrus (surprising, as there’s no citrus in the gin), a brisk and powerful introduction that should keep fans of more traditional, juniper-forward gins happy. The body folds in the florals — lots of rose petal character (considerably more than Hendrick’s) that fortunately manages to stay on this side of the perfume counter. The coriander adds an earthy element that is present mainly on the finish. Cucumbers are the only element that don’t really make a major showing. Intended to be “cooling,” the gin does have a gentler (and sweeter) let-down on the back end than you might expect, which takes things out on a refreshing and, well, restorative finish. I like this gin a bit better than the Uncle Val’s Botanical bottling, although with only four botanicals to rely on, Restorative has to work harder for your love.   The English word 'gin' is derived from the French word 'genievre' meaning juniper, the original herb used by the ancient distillers to make their medicines. It must still be the most prominent flavour in gin under EC regulations. London Dry gin is a style of gin and not a geographical description.   It's always amusing to see London Dry Gin on a label, and then discover the product is produced hundreds of miles away from London. Nevertheless, this is a wonderful new gin that adds another page to the ever-growing book of 'boutique' bottlings. As our portfolio grows so does our awareness and understanding of the intricacies and curiosities of this most versatile spirit. Lovers of citrusy styles will most certainly find favour with Whitley Neil, while the "juniper junkies" might want to give this one a miss.

  Tasting note: [BATCH 1 tasted] Clear silvery appearance. Plenty of citrus peel immediately evident in the opening sniffs, perhaps the juniper has been upped slightly too since our last encounter with this brand. There's hints of pepper as well. A creamy entry follows through to a medium dry, juniper focused mid palate. Great mouthfeel. Really nicely balanced with the late citrus oils entering to round off beautifully fresh, balanced and tangy. Delicate spices carry through to the aftertaste. 42% Alc./Vol.

  First tasting 2011: Crystal clear, water like appearance. A delightful perfume of citrus oils, blossom and infusions leap from the glass. Underneath the citrus, some spice lurks, supported by a pristinely clean, sweet spirit. The palate weight is generous yet soft and silky, delivering an explosion of creamy citrus flavours above a delicately spiced background. A touch of anise emerges. Perfect balance. Long aftertaste of citrus peel and spice. 42.0% Alc./Vol.
