2019 Pierre Peters l'Esprit Blanc de Blancs Vintage ChampagneChampagne, FRANCE$199. 00Bottle$2388.00 DozenABV: 12%Closure: CorkOther Reviews....
The L'Esprit de 2019 is one of the best versions of this wine I can remember tasting. Exuberant and racy, with tons of energy, the 2019 reflects the natural intensity of this great vintage while retaining the super-classic signatures of the Côtes des Blancs. This cuvée is a blend of fruit sourced from Grand Cru sites in Le Mesnil, Avize, Cramant and Oger. Readers who want to enjoy a top-flight Champagne without splurging will find so much to like here. Hints of tangerine peel, marzipan and dried flowers linger on the intensely saline finish. Dosage is 4 grams per liter. Disgorged: December 19, 2023. Drink 2024-2034.

JamesSuckling.comA selection from four plots, the 2019 Champagne Grand Cru Blanc De Blancs L'Esprit Vintage Brut offers more power and crystalline density. Pouring a bright silver/yellow hue, it opens to aromas of ripe pear, citrus blossoms, salted lime, and crushed stones. It’s medium-bodied, with a chiseled structure, a precise mousse, and a long persisting finish. This vintage has the structure to demand some cellar time before diving into it. Drink it over the coming 12-15 years. Drink 2024-2040.

2016 Pierre Peters Les Montjolys Cuvee Speciale Blanc de Blancs ChampagneChampagne, FRANCE$399. 00Bottle$4788.00 DozenABV: 12%Closure: CorkOther Reviews....
Marked by a tight-knit core, the 2016 Brut Blanc de Blancs Cuvée Spéciale Les Montjolys is very different from the fuller-bodied, more powerful 2017 rendition. Disgorged in December 2023 with a dosage of 4.5 grams per liter, it’s a more linear Montjolys, stylistically reminiscent of the 2013 rendition. Offering up aromas of white flowers, green apple, fresh hazelnut and oyster shell, it is crystalline and nuanced, structured around mouthwatering acidity and concludes with a focused, chalky finish. It’s one of the more elegant versions of this cuvée, demonstrating subtle complexity, and I loved it! As always, it derives from a vineyard based on deep clay soil, where the resulting wines are more textural and less taut than those produced from Les Chétillons. Drink 2024-2044.

Kristaps Karklins - Wine Advocate (Dec 20, 2024)The 2016 Brut Cuvée Spéciale Montjolys is all precision, tension and energy, with that extra kick of exuberance that is so typical of this site. Tangerine peel, spice, lemon confit, pastry and dried flowers are all beautifully amplified in this resonant, super-expressive Blanc de Blancs. Soft contours and an exotic flair add to its undeniable allure. There's real palate presence and overall depth here. Gorgeous tropical overtones linger. This is such a classy wine. Dosage is 4 grams per liter. Disgorged: November 2023. Drink 2024-2036.

Antonio Galloni - VinousLeaner and very minerally with sliced apple and pear, as well as hints of brioche and pie crust. Lemon undertones. Medium-bodied and racy, with slate, kerosene and spicy undertones. It goes on and on, but maintains delicacy and form. 6 years on lees and disgorged October 2023. 4g/L dosage. Drink now.

JamesSuckling.comThe 2016 Champagne Blanc De Blancs Les Montjolys Cuvée Speciale Brut displays more breadth in the range and pours a medium straw hue. It reveals a delicate smoky profile, with more savory aromas of ripe golden pears, toasted bread, lemon balm, and wet stones. Medium to full-bodied, the palate gains in salinity, with a crunchy feel, a spritely and elegant mousse, and a great finish. It’s prime for holding another year or so and drinking over the following 15 years or more, as it’s surely going to improve as it leans into its more tertiary characteristics. Drink 2026-2042.

The L'Esprit de 2018 is a very pretty wine that shows the natural complexity of a Champagne that has spent a few years in bottle. Floral and light on its feet, the 2018 also reflects a vintage with higher yields in its mid-weight structure. Lemon peel, white flowers, mint, sage and almond are all nicely layered. The 2018 is not terribly complex or deep, but it is immensely charming. Disgorged: November 2022. Drink 2023-2033.

The 2016 Brut Cuvée Spéciale Les Chétillons is gorgeous. Light on its feet and intensely aromatic, the 2016 is an absolute delight. Dried lemon peel, almond, crushed flowers, tropical fruit and chamomile all grace this super-expressive Chétillons. Light inflections of botrytis linger. Slightly forward aromas and flavors suggest the 2016 will be an early-drinking Chétillons, but I doubt that will be an issue for most readers. If anything, the 2016 shows the kind of complexity that usually only comes with time. It's a fine effort in a challenging vintage. Disgorged: November 2022. Dosage is 4 grams per liter. 2017 Pierre Peters l'Esprit Blanc de Blancs Vintage ChampagneChampagne, FRANCE$180. 00Bottle$2160.00 DozenABV: 12%Closure: CorkOther Reviews....
Unwinding in the glass with scents of sweet orchard fruit, peach, honeycomb, warm biscuits and dried fruits, the 2017 Blanc de Blancs Grand Cru Millésime L’Esprit de 2017 is medium to full-bodied, ample and satiny, with fine concentration, racy acids and a long, saline finish. Péters describes the vintage in the Côte de Blancs—which suffered less than sectors where Pinot predominates—as "a precursor of 2019," in the sense that small yields attained elevated maturity without losing freshness; and this Champagne does indeed transcend simplistic generalizations about the vintage. Drink 2023 - 2035.

Disgorged with five grams per liter dosage, the 2015 Brut Blanc de Blancs Cuvée Spéciale Les Chétillons has turned out well, unwinding in the glass with aromas of freshly baked bread, crisp orchard fruit, clear honey, warm biscuits and dried white flowers. Medium to full-bodied, fleshy and muscular, it's a deep, compact wine structured around racy acids and chalky extract. It's a strong effort, but it will demand a bit of patience to reveal all its potential. Péters was careful not to pick too soon, classifying 2015 along with 2011 and 2007 as years defined by an early harvest where it was nonetheless critical to avoid picking too early. Drink 2025-2050.

William Kelley - Wine Advocate (Sep 01, 2022)The 2015 Brut Cuvée Spéciale Les Chétillons offers up a beguiling mix of dried fruits, herbs, smoke, graphite and citrus peel. Powerful and driving, the 2015 has a lot to offer. It's an intriguing Chétillons, that is for sure. Today, the wine's textural richness and savoriness are in a sort of tension with each other. It will be interesting to see which direction this ends up going, but the evolution this far has been quite positive. I am cautiously optimistic here, especially given the high extract. Like its Les Chétillons counterpart, the 2014 Brut Blanc de Blancs Cuvée Spéciale Les Montjolys is also showing beautifully. Wafting from the glass with aromas of crisp green orchard fruit, freshly baked bread, Meyer lemon, bee pollen and white flowers, it's full-bodied, fleshy and layered, with an ample core of fleshy, vibrant fruit that's girdled by bright acids and complemented by a pretty pinpoint mousse. Textural and expansive, it's a touch richer and more giving than the more chiseled Chétillons. Drink 2023-2043.

William Kelley - Wine Advocate (Feb 01, 2022)The 2014 Brut Cuvée Spéciale Montjolys shows just how compelling this vintage is. It offers a gorgeous mix of energy from this late-ripening year along with the natural radiance of this site. Lemon confit, white pepper, apricot, white flowers and chamomile are all finely delineated throughout. There is a bit of youthful austerity, though, so I would cellar the 2014 for at least a year or two. Drink 2024-2035.

Antonio Galloni - VinousThe 2014 Champagne Cuvée Speciale Les Montjolys Brut is floral and has a hint of greenness, with notes of almond croissant, marzipan, lemon curd, and green melon. There is great tension on the palate, and it is more linear, as you might expect from the vintage. With a note of lime blossom, its florality continues through the finish and lingers. Audrey Frick - jebdunnuck.comA sister to Les Chétillons, its vines just a little lower, with a little more clay over the chalk bedrock. Pale dreamy lemon, then an appealing attack of sourdough which, on warming, presumes upon notes of gingerbread; in the same vein the almonds defer to marzipan and the lemon pith is joined by nectarine and Mirabelle plum. Generous and precise at the same time; all that one should expect from a great wine from a great village (Le Mesnil-sur-Oger). Drink 2021 - 2028.

Antonio Galloni - VinousSourced from four of the great grand cru villages of the Côte des Blancs, L’Esprit is an archetype of a classy Chardonnay-based Champagne. Alison Napjus - Wine Spectator (2019)The NV (2016) Rosé Albane is fabulous, but it needs at least several hours to truly blossom, as it is very reticent upon opening. Bright cranberry, mint, white flowers, chalk and sweet rose petal give the Albane striking aromatic nuance and tons of sheer appeal. What a pretty wine it is. The blend is 55% Chardonnay and 45% Meunier, done as a saignée.

Antonio Galloni's Vinous (November 2020)Based on the 2015 vintage and blending Péters's Chardonnay with a saignée of Pinot Meunier from René Geoffroy, the latest rendition of the NV Brut Rosé for Albane bursts with complex aromas of red apples, pomelo, fresh mint, licorice and shrimp shell. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, delicate and incisive, with a delicate phenolic presence and a sneakily persistent finish. Péters contends that the tannins of Pinot Noir would amplify the austerity of Le Mésnil, hence his decision to work with Pinot Meunier.

Antonio Galloni's Vinous (Nov 2021)The NV Blanc de Blancs Grand Cru Réserve Oubliée is a blend of the best reserve wines from three different vessels: concrete, stainless steel and a 45-hectoliter oak vat from Franz Stockinger in Austria. The "forgotten reserve" shows a complex bouquet with bright and elegant fruit intertwined with notes of nuts, mocha and a touch of smoked speck. Aged sous liège (under natural cork), this is a very pure, fresh, fine, highly complex and energetic Champagne with a long, salty finish. An exuberant mousse slowly subsides into a pale straw coloured base that has an exceptionally fine and very persistent bead streaming through it. Refined and sculptured with an airy feel the palate is layered with bright citrus and pear fruits which meld into yeast lees, toast, subtle honeyed cashew like characters, ginger and faint hazelnut. Disgorged in March 2018, the 2008 Extra-Brut Vintage from Ployez-Jacquemart is showing brilliantly, unwinding in the glass with aromas of citrus zest, confit lemon, pear, brioche and mandarin. Full-bodied, deep and concentrated, with an incisive spine of acidity and a pearly mousse, the quality of the vintage here puts this on the same level as the house's two tête de cuvée bottlings in their portfolio of current releases. The blend is 50% Chardonnay, with the balance equal parts Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier. Drink 2020-2040.

Some 25% of the vins clairs that compose Ployez-Jacquemart's NV Extra-Brut Passion were barrel fermented, and it's a richer, more vinous non-vintage blend that's aged—for four or five years—sur pointes rather than sur lattes to prevent excess. Offering up an inviting bouquet of lemon, orange oil, crisp yellow orchard fruit, toasted nuts and honeycomb, it's medium to full-bodied, deep and intense, with a racy spine of acidity, fine concentration at the core, and a penetrating, sapid finish. Ployez-Jacquemart Extra Quality Brut ChampagneChampagne, FRANCE$64. 99Bottle$779.88 DozenCellar: Drink now - 5 Years (2021-2026)ABV: 12%Closure: CorkThe vibrant and striking Champagnes of Ployez-Jacquemart were a welcome surprise among the many tasted in recent months. Established in 1930 and now run by third generation winemaker Laurence Ployez, the family have their own vineyards in Grand Cru and Premier Cru villages including their hometown of Ludes, Mailly-Champagne, Villedommange, and Vertus. These are supplemented with purchased grapes from longstanding contracts that have been in place for over 30 years, mainly in Grand Cru Chardonnay villages.
Winemaking is meticulous, with only first press juice used in their wines. Following fermentation in a mix of tank and barrels, wines are aged nose-to-punt, or sur pointe, in lieu of being aged on their side. This approach provides the antioxidative and aging benefits of the lees while not allowing the wines to become too rich from the lees contact. Laurence is keen to express the various sites and vintage characteristics, so while the wines are aged between 4 and 12+ years on less, use of reserve wines is limited and sometimes not used at all. Similarly dosage is minimal averaging around 3-4 grams per litre.
The standard bearer for the house, the Extra Quality Brut receives a minimum of 4 years on lees and is blended from Premier Cru and Grand Cru fruit, 60% of which is Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier, the balance Chardonnay.Ranked No. 65 in Wine Spectators Top 100 wines for 2020.

2015 Pol Roger Sir Winston Churchill Champagne Magnum (1500ml)Champagne, FRANCE$1050. 00Bottle$12600.00 DozenABV: 12.5%Closure: CorkOther Reviews....
A strong effort in a less-acclaimed vintage, Pol Roger's newly released 2015 Cuvée Sir Winston Churchill opens in the glass with aromas of confit citrus, ripe orchard fruits and dried white flowers mingled with hints of honeycomb, freshly baked bread and anise. Medium to full-bodied, vinous and concentrated, with bright acids, chalky structuring extract and a pinpoint mousse, this inherently rather rich, gastronomic Champagne is quite tightly wound out of the gates and will reward a bit of bottle age. Stylistically, it is somewhat reminiscent of a modern-day version of the 1985. Drink 2025 - 2045.

William Kelley - Wine Advocate (Mar 10, 2023)The 2015 Brut Cuvée Sir Winston Churchill shows off the savory side of the vintage to great effect. Hints of dried pear, sage, mint, dried flowers, lemon oil and chamomile open gradually in this mid-weight, lithe edition of Pol Roger's tête de cuvée. The 2015 unfolds nicely with time in the glass, but I wouldn't think of opening a bottle anytime soon. Readers will find a nervy Winston Churchill marked by notable freshness and vigor more than size. This is a fine effort in a vintage that has proven to be far trickier than most observers originally envisioned. Dosage is 7 grams per liter. Disgorged September 2022. Drink 2027-2045.

Alison Napjus - Wine SpectatorIn March 2022, Pol Roger released the 2013 vintage of its iconic cuvée, Sir Winston Churchill. First launched at Blenheim Palace in 1984 with the 1975 vintage (which was released in magnums only, a decade after the death of the great man), this 2013 is the 20th release. We also know the dosage: 7 g/L. While the 2013 vintage was catastrophic in France, Champagne is doing well, especially the Chardonnays. Budbreak was later than usual, and the weather was cool and rainy until June. Fortunately, the summer was hot, sunny and dry until the first days of September. The 2013 Vintage is a rich, effusive wine that beautifully captures the personality of the year in which ripeness and acids are both elevated. William Kelley - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate (March 2021)Intense aromas of strawberry and subtle apple with pie crust and some ash and stone. An almost smoky undertone to the aromas. Full-bodied and very layered with ultra fine tannins that give it a rough-cut, velvety texture. It’s very flavorful, yet so checked and reserved at the same time. Compact, tight palate that is deep and powerful. Very vinous at the end and in the mouth feel. Spicy and biscuity at the finish. Mostly pinot noir with chardonnay and only grand cru. More density and complexity than the 2008. Seven years on the lees. Delicious and luxurious to drink now, but giving this some age will make it even better.

JamesSuckling.com (August 2021)Sleek, with racy acidity, this tightly-meshed version nonetheless offers a lovely range of flavors, with ripe black cherry and currant fruit and accents of pomegranate, candied kumquat and raw almond. Finely detailed, creamily swaths the palate in silk-like texture, carrying the expanding flavor profile through to a graphite- and spice-laced, lasting finish. Drink now through 2032.

Alison Napjus - The Wine Spectator (June 2021)Rather open on the nose – a surprise! Looser textured than some and still decidedly embryonic. It does open out rather remarkably on the finish, suggesting that it is very much a long-distance runner. Pol Roger's newly released 2012 Cuvée Sir Winston Churchill is showing brilliantly, bursting from the glass with youthful aromas of honeyed pears, toasted brioche, pomelo, fresh pastry, green apple and mandarin orange, with hints of stone fruit emerging with time in the glass. Full-bodied, vinous and textural, with an enveloping core of fleshy, concentrated fruit, bright acids and an elegant pinpoint mousse, it concludes with a long, penetrating finish. More muscular and vibrant than the generous and charming 2009, the 2012 ranks alongside the 2008 and 2002 as one of the three finest renditions of Sir Winston Churchill this millennium—and in style it resembles a hypothetical blend of those two vintages. The 2009 pours with a frothy white mousse that slowly morphs into a straw pale coloured base that’s threaded by a very persistent stream of fine bubbles. Heady aromas of baked bread, yeast lees, citrus, roasted almond, light pear and brioche sail though the nostrils. Rich, full and concentrated the palate also exhibits great finesse and complexity with a flavour profile of yeast lees, bready characters, cashew, citrus and subtle oily toast like nuances. Airy in its feel with a gentle creaminess, it finishes dry with stimulating acidity. Some roasted nut characters shining through on the long, powerful yet graceful aftertaste.

One of the casualties of COVID-19 was a planned vertical tasting of Pol Roger's Cuvée Winston Churchill, which would have provided some additional context for the latest iteration of this textural, gastronomic, Pinot Noir-dominant bottling. Since that project is deferred to later this year, I've opted to publish my review of the newly released 2009 in the meantime. While the 2009 is structurally more open than the concentrated, tightly wound 2008, it's also still quite youthfully primary, and I would encourage readers to resist its deceptive accessibility right now and wait at least a few years for more complexity and aromatic range to emerge. That said, I can't claim that it was a hardship, even at this early stage, to work through several bottles of the 2009 for this report.
Pol Roger's 2009 Cuvée Sir Winston Churchill has turned out very well, offering up a demonstrative bouquet of golden apples, clear honey, hazelnuts and fresh pastry that's still quite primary. Full-bodied, fleshy and textural, it's deep and concentrated, with an ample core of fruit, ripe but racy acids, a pinpoint mousse and a long, penetrating finish. This is an expressive, deceptively immediate rendition of this bottling, yet despite its charm out of the gates, readers willing to wait at least five years will be rewarded with significant additional complexity. Drink 2023-2050.

As always, this Pinot Noir-dominated Champagne is a great wine. In this vintage, it is fuller than usual, perhaps less structured—a true reflection of the vintage. Like all releases of this cuvée, the wine will age magnificently. Drink now or hold for at least 10 years to get full maturity.

One of the great Champagnes both for its richness and its longevity, this latest incarnation is superb. The wine's richness is linked to the ripe fruit and the dominance of Pinot Noir in the blend. It also shines in the perfect balance between the texture, the minerality and the integration of the fruit. It can be enjoyed now, but it will be better from 2020 and then for many years to come.

I have long held the view that Pol Roger consistently offers the best value for money of all the great Champagne houses, the only agonising question was how to choose between this and the 2004 Vintage Brut. The Blanc de Blancs is 100% Cote des Blancs Grand Crus, and the wine spends nine years on tirage, with hand-riddling (almost extinct these days). Pale quartz-green, this sets the heart racing with its super-finely chiselled purity and elegance, flavours of citrus wrapped in a wedding veil of minerally acidity.

A suitably monumental wine for a monumental man in most vintages, here scaling the peak of magnificence, the 14th release since 1975. It is predominantly pinot noir (Tom Stevenson speculates 70-80%), and is 100% Grand Cru. Straw-coloured, it brings another dimension of flavour, texture, length and depth into play; still tightly wound up after 10 years on tirage, fruit, honey and citrussy acidity are folded together in perfect balance. If you want to cellar one of the greatest champagnes of the present day, this should be at the head of your shopping list.

Buy Sparkling Wines from around the world in Our Online Store
French Champagne is not an everyday luxury for many. Thankfully, over the past few decades the production of Sparkling Wine in Australia has made a quantum leap, and to be fair, much of the increased quality is because of the presence of French know-how. The most prestigious and expensive technique for Sparkling wine production has become known as 'Methode Champenoise' (fermentation in the bottle). As we have all learnt to our joy, sparkling wines produced by Methode Champenoise, as opposed to other techniques, invariably result in a superior drink. But it is a very difficult wine to make - costly, time consuming, even risky.
The two key grape varieties employed are Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, though warmer regions may favour others. Chardonnay gives life, acid, freshness and aging potential to methode champenoise, though care must be taken to avoid excess maturity, particularly in warmer climates, which can produce a dominant, aggressively varietal character. Warm climate Chardonnay cuvees may suffer from a narrow flavour profile, high "melony" aroma notes and lack of freshness, liveliness and length. Additionally, rich fertile soils can cause this variety to produce foliage and grassy aromas. When combined with Pinot Meunier, Chardonnay has a greater capacity to age harmoniously and for a longer time. Pinot Noir adds depth, complexity, backbone, strength, and fullness (what the French call "carpentry") to methode champenoise wines but is seldom used by itself, even in Blanc de Noirs.
