If you are looking for a quiet storm of a Tasmanian sparkling, Bream Creek, east of Hobart, will fill that desire. A blend of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, the Cuvée Traditionelle typically spends at least 5 years on lees before disgorging and will continue to age in bottle for several years from its release and the 2014 does not deviate from the quality I have come to expect from them.
A rich and buttery brioche, honeycomb, lemon curd, peach blossom and vanilla yoghurt on the nose, the freshness of youth is evident amongst the autolytic characteristics but on the palate, its youth is truly revealed. Crisp green apples, oyster shells, white nectarines, fresh lemon zest all find their way to the front with those toasty notes taking a back seat. Pure elegance with a clean and lean lingering finish, this is a stylish sparkling wine to either drink now or cellar for up to a decade. Drink 2020-2030.

80/20% Victoria/Tumbarumba. Super clean, fruit-driven sparkling with subtle creamy yeast overtones that can't put a foot wrong. The producer is one assured sparkling maker who knows what drinkers want. Dusty cherry, pomegranate. The bead is strong, acidity cuts through well and the strawberry crush flavour is just so tasty.

A showcase of the lifted floral aromatics that Muscat produces, rosewater and musk complimented with citrus blossom and freshly crushed grapes. The palate is true to the bouquet with rich strawberry, musk and Turkish delight characters all prominent. Gentle natural spritz adds texture to the mid palate, before finishing with a burst of citrus fruit, ripe lime, mandarin and crisp clean acidity.

A plentiful mousse hovers over a pale straw coloured base that has pale gold tinged edges and is finely threaded by a persistent stream of tiny bubbles. Lifted pear and red apple scents merge into some dried honey, brioche and yeast lees notes. Fruit from the Strathbogie Ranges and King Valley. Not shown on the new, bold labels that the wine was disgorged in June ’21, the only label claim is traditional method. The fine mousse is very active in the mouth, and the dosage has been kept to a low level ex the long time the wine was on tirage.

Clover Hill is a Tasmanian success story, established in 1986, on the site of an old dairy farm in north-east Tasmania. It continues to be run by the Goelet family using traditional French methodology. Their now 66-hectare property overlooking Bass Strait was principally selected for its climate, which is similar to that of Champagne. It affords long ripening periods, which allows the fruit to accumulate flavour intensity balanced with fine acidity.

Their latest entry level cuvee immediately impresses with its white creamy mousse followed by a pale straw colour with pale gold edges and exceptionally fine bead showing great persistence. Good lift on the nose with aromas of pear and a touch of baked apple followed by some toast and yeast lees. The palate displays bready baked apple flavours followed by some subtle toast and yeast lees characters. Clean dry finish with an almost creamy like mouthfeel. The wine is based on a blend of chardonnay, pinot noir and pinot meunier (in that order), partially aged in oak before being bottle fermented, spending three years on lees. Glints of gold run through the straw colour and introduce a palate with a rippling of stone fruit, ripe apple, red berry and spice flavours augmented by a touch of brioche, followed by a long, well-balanced finish.

In our opinion, the best Sparkling reds are made entirely from Shiraz, however, winemakers often choose to experiment, with a variety of grapes. At Fox Creek, they have chosen to add Cabernet Franc to the blend, which has tended to dry the wine out too much, and move it out of style – but that’s a personal observation some might like to challenge.Opaque crimson black colour with excellent deep mauve mousse. The nose is a little subdued, with aroma of blackberry, liquorice and raspberry. Generous palate flavours but quite dry, with raspberry, blackberry and liquorice dominant. Fine dry tannins, followed by long liquorice spice aftertaste. Cellar 4-5 years

An intriguing sparkling made from kiwi fruit. Excellent white mousse, with fine profuse bead with good persistence. Brilliant straw colour. The nose is delicate with subtle yeast autolysis note, followed by a hint of spice and a trace of Kiwi fruit. The palate is the challenge for this wine, since it relies purely on the base material from one batch of kiwi fruit which makes layering complexity difficult to achieve – but that is the challenge facing future vintages. There is just a touch of residual sweetness, some spicy dusty kiwi fruit flavours emerge, with a slightly furry end palate sensation. A very interesting style, which would be ideal over a platter of tropical fruit.

Harvest Wines are an Australian grower cooperative from the Northern Adelaide Hills. They are committed to purchasing 100% of fruit from the local growers within 5km of their winery in Gumeracha, despite any difficult conditions that Mother Nature can throw at them. This means that in the years where there may be a bush fire, frost or reduced yields the growers will always have an income to invest in the following year.

This doesn't mean that the wine is 2nd rate, any fruit that is not up to scratch is distilled and used in Applewood's range of spirits and liqueurs.

Notes from the winery, Unico Zelo:
A refreshingly dry style of sparkling wine that shows all the generosity and elegance that Chardonnay is known for, whilst giving you a clean and cut finish, driving shear drinkability. “Grown at the most exposed and elevated position in Birdwood, Northern Adelaide Hills - this fruit reaches a ripeness with a spritely acidity that lends itself incredibly well to a Sparkling style of wine - this 100% Chardonnay Blanc de Blancs” – Brendan & Laura Carter

A heady purple tinged mousse has great staying power over a deep dark red black coloured base. Very fine bead showing good persistence. Intense ripe blackberry, liquorice and black plum aromas fill the nostrils underpinned by chocolatey oak and vanillin spice. This is a big heavy sparkling red and despite being chilled you still get a feeling of heat on the finish which tends to unbalance things a tad. Mouthfilling flavours of ripe blackberries, liquorice and black plums hold court over vanillin oak and spice. Dryish finish with a hint of youthful firmness to the tannins. Finishes a touch short with an aftertaste of blackberries, liquorice, dark plums and spicy vanillin oak.

    Morris Rutherglen Sparkling Shiraz Durif
    Rutherglen, Victoria, AUSTRALIA
    $19. 99
    Bottle
    $239.88 Dozen
    Closure: Cork

Rich, Rutherglen Shiraz is ideally suited to producing sparkling 'Burgundy' style wines. However, Morris have not traditionally produced one - their first vintage being 1988. The early wines used a heavy dose of Durif making the wines excessively inky, however, the current release uses the grape variety judiciously allowing it to contribute to colour and flavour. Deep crimson purple colour. Ripe plummy, blackberry and spice aromas which are transformed into a generous mouthfilling palate. The contribution of the Durif is subtle, yet evident, giving the wine added depth. Soft finish. A must for the Christmas Table.

    Other Reviews....
An inky purple hue; while it has a riff of dark fruit, this is savoury with earthy aromas, charcuterie, aniseed and charcoal. No shortage of tannins, but all contained and finishes super dry.

This solid sparkling red builds its base with fruit from mature Mclaren Vale Shiraz vines combined with a tiny batch of older Grenache that adds both lift and spice. This is then finished off with a small batch of fortified vintage Shiraz from Ben’s prized Piebald Vineyard, which brings the subtle sweetness to an otherwise rich and complex wine.

Pours with a good creamy purple tinged mousse which once dissipated reveals a bright dark red base wine colour with a very fine and profuse bead. Pronounced aromas of ripe blackberries and liquorice are overlaid by some dark chocolate with vanillin oak end notes. Rich luscious flavours of ripe blackberries and dark chocolate are to the fore followed by some dark plum, liquorice and vanillin oak nuances. Creamy texture finishing relatively dry with a medium to long aftertaste of dark plum, dark chocolate, liquorice and vanillin oak.
