Shiraz

Characterised by its intensity of colour, palate weight and concentration of ripe plum, black pepper and red berry flavours, Australian Shiraz tends to taste richer, riper and more full-bodied than most, often layered by the use of toasted American oak and less frequently French oak. Look out for hedonistic examples from all areas of South Australia, Central Victoria and to a lesser extent, cooler climes like Western Australia. Browse our top rated Shiraz wines here.

Epsilon is the project of Aaron and Julie Southern (Julie is a member of the Kalleske clan) who own vineyards in the Northern part of Barossa. As the familiar story goes with so many growers they sold off their fruit to larger wineries until a chance meeting with the Massena boys Dan Standish and Jaysen Collins. Under their guidance they convinced them to start up their own brand in 2004 and build a winery on the property. Maturation takes place for approximately 12 months in seasoned French oak hogsheads with only the best batches making the final blend.

Magnificent colour featuring an impenetrable inky black heart along with a very deep black dark purple hue. The nose is flooded with scents of spicy dark plum and liquorice which intermingle with lightly smoked vanillin cedar, fennel, graphite and blackpepper. Rich, concentrated and plush the palate is soaked in succulent dark plum, blackberry and liquorice fruits which overlay a smoky vanillin cedar, fennel, graphite and blackpepper back drop. Energetic and fresh with polished yet sturdy tannins. Amply powered it finishes long with lashings of ripe fruit.

Vines planted in '75. 80% whole bunch ferment, all pressings included, 13 months in French oak, 13% new. Licorice, violets, stems, nuts and black cherries. It puts on a complex display, seamless, too, its soft fruit and texture pulling a wide gamut of flavours along for the ride. Tannin is incredibly fine-grained and its nutty length has plenty going for it. This is a mid-weight shiraz with a whole lot to offer. Drink by 2032.

Frankland Estate’s red wines have upped the ante in recent years. This is another beautiful example. It’s blessed with abundant spice and roasted nut characters, shows immense finesse in both its flow of fruit and spread of tannin, and is persistent and then some. Florals, mid-weight red berry flavours, twiggy spice and undergrowth characters. It’s wildly expressive and yet it feels effortless. I tasted this wine in the office; my car was parked nearly two kilometres away; I carried the half-finished bottle through the streets, such was my desire to carry on with it. Drink 2023 - 2032+

This wonderful wine marks the continuing evolution of Syrah from Frankland Estate. It was a very good year with the cool ripening period allowing for excellent flavour build up. This is 94% Syrah, 4% viognier and 2% Mourvèdre. Each plays an important role in the final blend. The use of the 470 clone has brought a degree of perfume and elegance to the final wine that is quite beautiful. It’s spicy with a little regional ironstone and black pepper. Smoothly integrated and silky. The oak is deliberately muted with the use of 3500-litre foudres an important part. Outstanding wine.

Yes, Frankland Estate enjoys its prestige as head of the riesling kingdom, but the reds are on a revolutionary path. Will they take the crown? A sneaky 4/2% viognier/ mourvèdre added to this excellent, spicy, smoky, juicy, peppery wine. Plush fruit with all the best syrah attributes rising up, including beautiful, savoury and silky tannins. Drink by 2035.

Jane Faulkner - James Halliday's Australian Wine Companion

    Notes From Winery....
This wine is 94% Syrah with 4% Viognier and 2% Mourvèdre. 20% whole bunches are included, carefully sourced from among two blocks where the stems turn yellow early. The perfume from these leaps out of the glass and the tannins give a sense of width, with gentle chewiness. Our aim is delicacy with power. The wine was matured for 14 months in 3,500-litre foudre and a few additional 500-litre puncheons. A calm, composed nose suggests great depth. Violets, cinnamon, peppercorns, smoke, stones and dusty earth mingle with redcurrants, cherries and plums. The palate has to-die-for weightlessness and is perfectly poised between a range of ripe, velvety fruits and savoury tones. The whole bunches and our ironstone soils conjure a slew of sweet and exotic spices threaded through the fine, ferrous tannins. Thoroughly compelling and cohesive from first sniff to the soaring finish.

Spicy, perfumed, white flower and Turkish apricot, blackberry and liquorice. Medium-bodied, supple and ripe, with fine plum skin tannin and flavour, a little meatiness and gentle chew, Christmas cake and fragrance, fine emery board tannin and sweet black berries on a long finish. Very deep, bold red/purple colour, bright and youthful. The bouquet is fruit-sweet and deliciously appealing, sweetly jammy and there's possibly some whole-bunch character as well, stylishly intertwined. The palate is again seductively fruit-sweet and perfumed, with floral notes as well as red and blue fruits, the tannins supple and well balanced with the other components. It's already very approachable and supple, a delicious young, evidently cool-climate, Shiraz. Long finish and very elegant. A gorgeous wine.

    Notes from winery....
2020 was a very small cropping year due to the drier season. Some 600 dozen bottles were produced following rigorous selection. But once more we can be confident that our organic approach gives the vines greater strength and ability to perform in such years. Though dry, temperatures stayed modest through the growing season. The resulting wine has good natural vibrancy and balance.

The integration of oak and fruit is excellent here. Smoky bacon and black cherry flavours come across as seamless and united, apple juice acidity and raspberry notes adding freshness and brightness respectively. The smokiness of this wine is overt but positive, the assertive but well-folded (grainy) tannin likewise, so too the gentle woodiness bitterness on the finish. What I like most here is that there is flavour at every step: in the tannin, in the acidity, in the body and in the finish. Drink 2024 - 2033+

Campbell Mattinson - The Wine Front (April 2022)

The intensity and grainy nature of this wine sets it apart through extra length and persistence. The colour has remarkable depth and youthful purpliness, with aromas that leap out of the glass and smack of blackberry, cassis and raspberry, floral and with the subtlest suggestion of jam. In the mouth, it's soft and round, supple and medium to full-bodied, with a fruit sweetness that really charms. It tastes like a blend rather than a pure Shiraz (Viognier?). The tannins are mild and svelte. A lovely wine with a big future in front of it.

Huon Hooke - The Real Review (February 2022)

    Notes from winery....
Our SmithCullam Syrah comes from the original “Winery Block” of Syrah planted in 1988. The wine homes in on the powerful, grainy ferrous tones from the ironstone soils, offset by the elegance achieved from organic farming and shading afforded these bunches by the east-west orientation of the rows. The wine is matured in large-format (3,500-litre) oak, which contributes to its freshness and juiciness. There’s a beautiful interplay between the earthiness and iodine notes of the Mourvèdre and the generosity and aromatics of the Viognier.

If you have been following my journey through the less big and bold Syrah/Shiraz, you will know I like them silky, pretty and a teeny bit savoury.
The Isolation Ridge is a perfumed and pretty riot on the nose, all violets, damsons, roses, thyme, blackberries, vanilla, baked quince and pencil shavings.
The palate is elegant and refined and from that rollercoaster of prettiness comes a refined fresh fruit acidity, supple tannins, black coffee, liquorice and that beguiling combination of floral notes in a well structured but not overly weighty Syrah. This is still a baby bundle of juicy and youthful mulberries, raspberries, damsons and plums, showing the beginning of what I expect to be a delicious and ever changing life. Very smart.

Established in 1982 by Rick Kinzbrunner, Giaconda Vineyard has since become one of the most sought-after producers in Australia. The property is now devoted solely to Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Shiraz, with a separate planting of Nebbiolo in the township of Red Hill. Red wines see extended maceration on skins to develop finer tannins, with maturation taking place in French Oak barrels for up to 24 months. The wines are only ever moved via gravity or gas, retaining all the pristine fruit that they work so hard to produce in the winery and the vineyard.

The 2021 vintage marks a departure for Giaconda, introducing a fresh winemaking approach and style characterized by more depth and tannin, resulting in a heightened level of complexity and refinement on the palate. This new Shiraz undergoes maturation in a blend of both new and seasoned small French oak barrels, as well as large 1600L French oak casks. Additionally, it experiences an extended 10-month maceration period on the grape skins within Spanish terracotta amphorae. Expect notes of briar and forest floor, Chinese five spice, roasted beetroot, and raspberry licorice. It boasts generous fruit and an exotic spice profile, supported by a robust tannin structure that promises graceful aging.

Rob Gibson is a viticulturalist with a very investigative mind. He has no argument that quality winemaking starts in the vineyard, however in order to maximise the end flavour profiles of a wine, Gibson has come to the realization that he must draw upon a diverse range of fields from horticulture and soil science, to meteorology and climatology. In fact, Gibson’s obsession with terroir leads him burrowing under vines like an old wombat in order to arrive at a deeper understanding of each Old Vines site (see tasting notes on the 2002 Gibson’s Barossa Vale Shiraz.)

Aged in 100% new oak (70% French and 30% American), the 2002 Shiraz Old Vine Collection is an amazing Shiraz produced from 92- to 139-year-old vines. Surprisingly, it possesses “only” 14+% alcohol. A deep saturated purple color is followed by aromas of espresso roast, white chocolate, pepper, blackberry liqueur, and melted asphalt. This is a youthful, primary red displaying an incredible wealth of fruit, magnificent glycerin as well as depth, and a monster finish of 70+ seconds. This stunning 2002 should hit its prime in 2-4 years, and last for 15 or more.

The distinctive labels of the Glaetzer portfolio hold special significance when you view this stunning collection of wines as a family affair. The entry level Bishop Shiraz is named in honour of Ben's mother, Judith (Bishop being her maiden name). The label bears the sign of Venus, which has come to represent women and feminine energy. Glaetzer sources fruit for the Bishop from the Ebenezer district of the Barossa valley from low yielding 35 year old to 120 year-old vines. He finds the fruit from younger vines contributes freshness & vibrancy, while Shiraz from the older blocks provides structure and depth. Maturation took place in a combination of 90% French oak and 10% American oak for a period of 16 months of which 40% was new oak.
Magnificent colour featuring an impenetrable inky black core and a very deep dark purple black hue. Flooding the olfactory senses are aromas of dark plum, freshly crushed blackberry and liquorice which are trailed by some vanillin cedar and peppered fennel like notes. Rich juicy dark plum, blackberry and liquorice fruits saturate the full bodied palate underpinned by youthful acidity which imparts an energetic feel. Notions of vanillin cedar, fennel, subtle mocha and pepper linger through the back half. Sturdy yet typically polished tannin structure. Concludes long, deeply fruited and youthfully vibrant.
    Cellar 6-8 years.

The quality of this vintage is immediately evident. The fruit was sourced from the Ebenezer subregion and that brings a distinctive iron stone slightly rusty nail character to the beautiful fruit. Spicy iron filings, dark plum and spicy red fruits on the nose. The density of the fruit has enabled Glaetzer to smack 40% new oak into it. A small amount of American rounds out the finish and palate feel. Drink 2023-2035.

The fruit for this cuvée is from Ebenezer, largely from Adrian Hoffman. Diverse soil types in the vineyard allow for diversity in picking and fruit flavors; this here is from the sandy/free-draining sections of the Ebenezer vineyard—from four blocks in the vineyard. It was handpicked, and picked based on flavor, then crushed, destemmed and cold fermented, barrel selection. It matured in 300-liter hogsheads for 14-16 months, in a combination of French oak coopers (100% new). Packaged in a black metal box, under natural cork and wax, this is a superstar.
The 2018 The Eye of Ra Shiraz is wildly aromatic: blood plum, pastrami, cracked peppercorns, clove bud, mountain herbs (alpine mint?), boysenberry, blackberry (actually, every black berry you can name), dark chocolate, squid ink, blueberry, resin and char. In the mouth, the wine is velvety and concentrated, with a surprising amount of detail embedded and embossed into the folds of tannin that shape the wine. This is very big, make no mistake, but also balanced between its sweet and savory sides. A galaxy of complexity exists in this glass. It shows the 2018 vintage off to its best effect: ripe, dense, concentrated, fresh and beguiling. Super good. The drinking window is conservative, however, as I prefer a modicum of primary fruit. It's important to note that it will age gracefully beyond that point, so it is up to you... Drink 2023-2038.

Amon Ra is Ben Glaetzer’s flagship Shiraz named after an Egyptian God who was considered to be the King of all Gods. According to Ben Glaetzer the key to Amon Ra Shiraz is balancing the fruit and tannin extraction rather the maximising it – “the fruit has such expression that we aim to preserve the characteristics of the vineyard rather than dominate them.” Fruit was sourced from a range of vineyards, aged between 50-130 years old, with a strong emphasis on fruit quality, rather than simply selecting parcels of fruit because they were from old vines. The wine was matured for 16 months in 100% new oak of which 5% was American and 95% French. It was bottled unfiltered. Yields from 2021 were much higher than the extremely small 2020 vintage and the long Indian Summer delivered great fruit ripeness and phenolic concentration.
Super dense inky black colour with a very deep dark purple black hue. Overwhelming the olfactory senses are potent aromatics of freshly crushed blackberries, liquorice and dark plum which are complimented by vanillin cedar, mocha, subtle earthy fennel and pepper notes. Saturating the rich, youthfully opulent palate is an assortment of blackberry, dark plum, liquorice and ripe blueberry fruits. Exceptionally powerful yet fresh its framed by a firm yet seamlessly integrated matrix of tannins. Infusions of violets, vanillin oak, earth, spicy mocha and blackpepper elements linger underneath. Outstanding length and breadth with a very long deeply fruited yet structured finish.
    Cellar 10-15 years plus.

A wine that illustrates how traditional Barossa can be expressed in modern hands. It’s a Shiraz from 50 to 130 year old Ebenezer vines, revealing power and poise. Traditional open fermentation was adopted with hand plunging three times a day. Deep plum and minerally characters merge on the nose. A slightly cedary factor lifts with a dense dark chocolate and spicy plum. Chalky fine tannins perfectly integrated combine to take a concentrated powerful palate to an effortlessly long finish. Drink 2028-2048.

Shiraz sourced from vines between 50 to 130 years of age in the renowned northern Barossa subregion of Ebenezer; 16 months in new French and American oak. A wine of impact and purity. Beautiful ripe black plum, cassis and black cherry fruits with hints of cedar, baking spices, dark chocolate, licorice, nutmeg, espresso, earth and graphite. Power and harmony writ large with cascading tannin, lacy acidity and great depth and concentration ... I feel it needs one of those big, old Batman-style 'KAPOW!!' boxes for emphasis. It's a cracker.

The tiny Gomersal estate sits on some tough vineyard country, where both vines and viticulturalist are forced to struggle. Typically yields are no more than 1.5 tonnes per acre. Owner/viticulturalist, Barry White gets his recompense in his Shiraz.

The vineyard's unusual name came about after the outbreak of the First World War when the distrust of all things German reached such paranoiac proportions, that South Australian towns began to change their German sounding names to 'more respectable' English titles. 'New Mecklenburg' became 'Gomersal' – a name derived from a West Yorkshire village. Ironically, no one bothered to research the origin of the title, which turned out to be as German as the vineyard's founders.

Greenock Creek wines always present themselves as intensely concentrated examples of their particular slice of the western Barossa. Greenock Creek's Shiraz Roennfeldt Road lives up to its reputation in 2018 and delivers a rich experience. While immense in concentration, it combines with youthful vibrancy, making for a killer package. It opens with a dark heart of chocolate, blackberry and black tar wrapped in a thick overcoat of new oak. There is a fantastic density of flavor to follow, an almost Port-y richness, with blackberry flavors topped by jammy complexity that all fits nicely into the overall experience. Shiraz sourced from 120-year-old vines on the Greenock Creek estate in western Barossa. Concentration is always a leitmotif for this estate, but there is freshness and vitality, too, and that is what I dig about the wines. It has to be said: I loved the 2016 vintage of this wine. It is unapologetically Barossa and so intensely flavored, bolstered by a whack of oak and plenty of tannin... the wine isn't what I would normally chase for my own drinking. However, credit where it is due, this wine is brilliantly put together, and the fruit is clearly special. So, the 2018 Shiraz Roennfeldt Road is everything above. It is big, muscular, savory, oaky, sweet, full throttle and spicy. It's old school in a way that works in its favor, and it is evocative of roasted lamb, bonfires, winter nights and oak cellars. It's a stylized experience here, with big fruit and big oak. The rum and raisin character is endemic to the vineyard, although prior to learning this, I would have said that it was endemic to the wine. Same thing. It is lower in alcohol than all of the other cuvées at the estate and is all the better for it. This was the first time the wine was taken out of barrel before the three-year period—two years maturation for the 2018. It matured in 100% American oak (20% new). 14.5% alcohol, sealed under natural cork. Drink 2023 - 2038.

Still very youthful, this has a deep nose of smoke, bitter chocolate and herbal liqueur. The gigantic tannin structure on the palate will need many years of further aging to completely resolve, but the tannins are fine which gives the super-long finish an extraordinary texture, like old-fashioned velvet. So much smoke and crushed rock character! A pure syrah which is then fermented with 100% whole bunches. Matured in 100% new oak for 42 months. Drinkable now, but best from 2026, and even then you should decant it.

As always, the 2019 Côte Rôtie La Landonne is all Syrah that was not destemmed and will spend four years in new French oak. A wine with perfection written all over it, it's one of the most impressive barrel samples to ever pass this critic's lips. Deep purple/black-hued with a massive, full-bodied, brooding style, it has classic smoky, meaty black fruits, a touch of iron, graphite, tobacco, and pepper, building tannins, and a huge finish. I was blown away by the 2019 Côte Rôtie La Turque, which comes from a tiny parcel in the Côte Brune and is fermented with a touch of Viognier as well as a small amount of stems. It too has a smoky, meaty, gamey profile as well as full-bodied richness and tons of mid-palate depth and concentration. It's another serious 2019 with structure to spare, remarkable purity, flawless balance, and a great finish. As usual, it's not for the instant gratification crowd and is going to demand 10-15 years of bottle age.

While just as aromatic and charming on the nose—where ephemeral floral notes join ripe cherries—as previous years, the 2019 Cote Rotie La Mouline isn't quite as impressive on the palate. It's medium to full-bodied, silky and caressing, without the same power, yet it's supremely elegant. Drink 2024 - 2035.

Bright, highly perfumed blueberry, black raspberry, violet and exotic spice aromas, along with a wild touch of blood orange. Juicy and lithe on the palate, offering intense red and blue fruit flavors that stain the palate while showing little in the way of excess weight. Finishes extremely long and sweet, with a building floral note, even tannins and a late jolt of five-spice powder.

Great nose of summer flowers and ripe blackberries with a glaze of toasty oak. A very graceful wine in spite of all the power and concentration. Feels almost weightless until you get to the finish where you feel the enormous structure that lurks just below the surface. A cuvee of 89% syrah and 11% viognier. Matured in 100% new oak for 42 months. Drink or hold.

The 2019 Côte Rôtie La Mouline is a bigger, richer Côte Rôtie. Co-fermented with a solid chuck of Viognier and around 85% destemmed (the same as the La Turque), this full-bodied effort has a kaleidoscope-like bouquet of bloody black and blue fruits, tapenade, salted meat, woodsmoke, and a touch of violets. This cuvée is always an exotic wine, and the 2019 is no exception, offering full-bodied richness, a layered, multi-dimensional mouthfeel, plenty of structure, and a great finish.

Does the scale go higher than 100? Guigal's 2018 Cote Rotie La Turque is a sure candidate for perfection down the road. With more concentration and richness than the aromatic 2017, it seamlessly blends grilled cherries, espresso, black olives and even exotic hints of black truffle into a full-bodied, powerhouse that should drink well for at least two decades. Drink 2025 - 2045.

Dark violet. Deeply perfumed black and blue fruit aromas, along with suggestions of Moroccan spices, potpourri, olive and smoky minerals. Densely packed cassis, bitter cherry and violet pastille flavors show excellent definition and are underscored by a vein of juicy acidity. The mineral and floral notes repeat on a wonderfully long and subtly chewy finish that's shaped by dusty, steadily building tannins. Drink 2029-2042.

In comparison to the La Mouline, the 2018 Côte Rôtie La Turque shows a darker, more Côte Brune-like character (which is where this is from) in its broody black fruits, scorched earth, smoked meats, graphite, and exotic flowers. As with the other single vineyards in 2018, the purity of fruit is off the charts, it's full-bodied, has incredible tannins, perfect balance, and a finish that won't quit. It shows that classic 2018 ripeness with no sensation of weight or heaviness. It too has some up-front appeal but won't hit maturity for another 7-8 years, if not a decade, and is a 30-year-wine. Drink 2030 - 2048.

The 2018 Cote Rotie La Mouline is immensely seductive, offering up enticing notes of floral potpourri and red berries on the nose. Those strawberries and raspberries persist onto the full-bodied palate and through the long, lush finish, buoyed by supple, creamy-textured tannins. This is the most complete, compelling vintage of La Mouline I've tasted. Drink 2025 - 2045.

Deep ruby. A complex, highly perfumed bouquet evokes mineral-accented black raspberry, cherry-cola, olive, violet candy, vanilla and cracked pepper. Sweet, focused and penetrating on the palate, offering intense red and blue fruit, floral pastille and exotic spice flavors that flesh out with aeration. The spice and floral notes come back emphatically on a strikingly long, focused finish that's given shape by fine-grained, slowly mounting tannins. Drink 2032-2045.

Just about pure perfection as well as a desert Island wine, the 2018 Côte Rôtie La Mouline comes from a tiny parcel in the Côte Blonde lieu-dit and spent four years in new barrels. Incredible notes of black raspberries, spring flowers, bacon fat, smoked game, violets, and pepper all emerge on the nose. These carry to a full-bodied, round, supple, sexy Côte Rôtie offering ultra-fine tannins, an insane level of purity, no hard edges, and a monster of a finish. As with the other 2018s here, it leads with its fruit and has a supple, ethereal style on the palate. It doesn't have the sheer wealth of material or density of the 2010, 2015, or 2019, but it’s possibly a slightly richer, sexier version of the 2016. Hide bottles for just 4-5 years, count yourself lucky, and enjoy over the following two decades or so. Drink 2027 - 2047.

Subtle hints of fresh pea shoots accent characteristic dark notes of roasted meat, espresso and black olives in the full-bodied 2018 Cote Rotie La Landonne. Rich, concentrated and velvety-textured, with ample length and plenty of ripe tannins on the finish, it should benefit from a decade or more of bottle age—once it gets there. It's a brooding beast of a Cote Rotie that serious collectors will want to have in their cellars. Drink 2025 - 2045.

Vibrant purple. A deeply perfumed, mineral-accented bouquet evokes ripe black and blue fruits, potpourri, incense and olive, and a dusty mineral nuance gains power as the wine stretches out. Shows superb depth as well as energy on the palate, offering gently sweet blackberry, cherry preserve, smoky bacon and fruitcake flavors that are supported by a core of juicy acidity. In a powerful yet vibrant style, displaying sharp focus, mounting tannins and a strikingly long, floral- and smoke-tinged finish All whole clusters and 100% new oak. Drink 2032-2045.

The 2018 Côte Rôtie La Landonne is a different beast, as always. Inky black-hued, with a monster of a nose revealing tons of smoked black fruits, cured meats, tobacco, ground pepper, and graphite. It has an almost Pauillac-like profile and is full-bodied, deep, and concentrated on the palate, with building tannins, flawless balance, and a huge finish. Pure raw power, this needs at least a decade of bottle age and will be one of the longest-lived wines in the vintage. Drink after 2032.

The 2017 Cote Rotie La Landonne is 100% whole cluster, yet the stemminess—at the moment—is represented on the nose as just the merest hint of fresh pea shoots. As always, La Landonne is a bastion of strength and power, with dark flavors that range from black cherries and plums to smoke, roasted meat and on into mocha and espresso. Full-bodied and densely concentrated, with a long, long finish, it's the most impressive of Guigal's single-vineyard Cote Roties this vintage. Drink 2025 - 2045.

Offers palate-staining, appealingly sweet and deeply concentrated blueberry, cassis, floral pastille, smoked meat, licorice and fruitcake flavors that show excellent concentration and are supported by a core of juicy acidity. In a completely different style, the more blockbuster, masculine style 2017 Côte Rôtie La Landonne sports a dense purple hue as well as quintessential Landonne notes of smoked meats, black fruits, scorched earth, and chocolate. Pure, focused, and remarkably delineated on the nose, it’s full-bodied and incredibly concentrated on the palate, with building tannins, perfectly integrated oak, and a monster of a finish. It’s going to require at least a decade to be drinkable, but it’s one of those seemingly immortal Côte Rôties that will continue drinking brilliantly for longer than most of us will be around. A common refrain regarding the La-Las is that they require a decade or more of cellaring to come around. In fact, they're often quite open and appealing soon after release, only to close down shortly thereafter. The 2017 Cote Rotie La Turque offers up hints of crushed stone and struck flint, smoky, bacon-fat aromas and ripe, mouthwatering blackberries. Full-bodied, creamy and rich, it's a powerful, concentrated effort that should still be drinking well in two decades. Drink 2022 - 2045.

Opaque ruby. Displays seductively perfumed aromas of ripe, mineral-drenched black and blue fruits, incense, potpourri and exotic spices. Sweet, gently chewy and penetrating in the mouth, offering sappy blueberry, cherry-cola and floral pastille flavors, with smoky mineral and vanilla nuances. One of the legendary vintages for this cuvée is the 2017 Côte Rôtie La Turque, a blend of 93% Syrah and 7% Viognier from a tiny parcel in the Côte Brune lieu-dit. Always aged 4 years in new French oak, it offers a dense, saturated purple color as well as slightly more masculine notes of blackberries, smoked meats, dark chocolate, and graphite. Full-bodied, beautifully concentrated, and perfectly balanced, with incredible purity of fruit, it already offers pleasure but will ideally be given 5-7 years of bottle age. It will deliver the goods for 30 to 40 years. It’s the star of the show in 2017 and one of the wines of the vintage. Drink 2027 - 2067.

The 2017 Cote Rotie La Mouline has developed quickly and is already approachable—although I wouldn't be surprised to see it close down shortly, only to emerge even better a decade from now. Saturated violet. Ripe, spice- and mineral-tinged red and blue fruits, incense, vanilla and strong violet notes are highlighted on the exotically perfumed nose. Sappy, penetrating and lively on the palate, showing impressive delineation and spicy lift to its blueberry, kirsch, floral pastille and cola flavors. Distinctly lively in character, especially in the context of the vintage, finishing with impressive power, polished tannins and echoing spice, mineral and floral notes. As usual, this wine was aged for 42 months in new French oak barrels that were coopered at Guigal. Drink 2027-2039.

Bottled in February of 2021, the 2017 Côte Rôtie La Mouline is a seamless, exotic, perfumed, full-bodied effort that offers a classic floral character in its ripe black raspberry and blackberry fruit as well as notes of spice box, espresso, and chocolate. Co-fermented with roughly 10% Viognier, it’s all about gorgeous fruit and texture, and this cuvée has that rare ability to bring incredible richness and depth with no sensation of weight or heaviness. Loaded with exotic perfumes of spring flowers and ripe berries, the 2016 Cote Rotie La Turque looks more like the wine I first tasted back in 2017. Medium to full-bodied, it's exquisitely silky and elegant from start to incredibly long finish; while there is ample concentration and a fine, lacy framework of tannins to support the fruit, the tannins virtually melt away into the background, leaving behind lingering notes of salted licorice and mocha. Approachable now, it should drink well for at least two decades.

Inky magenta. Candied cherry, blackcurrant, exotic spices, violet oil and a hint of olive on the powerfully scented nose. Velvety, seamless and alluringly sweet, offering palate-staining, mineral-laced black/blue fruit preserve, floral pastille, smoky bacon and spicecake flavors that open up steadily on the back half. Showing beautifully, the 2016 Côte Rôtie La Turque comes from the Côte Brune (along with the La Landonne) and includes a solid chunk of co-fermented Viognier. As with all the top La Las, it spends a full four years in new French oak and is bottled with no finning or filtration. Resembling the La Landonne with its smoky, meaty style, this deep purple-hued effort is medium to full-bodied and has complex notes of black raspberry, cassis, roast coffee, camphor, and flowers, silky tannins, and a great finish. It shows the more elegant style of the vintage yet is still concentrated, with fabulous tannins and impeccable balance. It's a beautiful, classic example of this cuvée to enjoy over the coming 20-25 years.

Like the La Turque, the 2016 Cote Rotie La Mouline is about as approachable a young La La as you're likely to find. Floral notes include hints of violet and hibiscus set against a backdrop of blackberries and cassis. Probably one of my favorite wines in the world is the La Mouline Côte Rôtie from the Guigal family. Coming from old vines and a warmer, steep, terraced parcel not far from the estate, it also includes a big chunk of Viognier and spent 4 years in new French oak. The 2016 Côte Rôtie La Mouline shows the more classic, elegant style of the vintage perfectly, offering a kaleidoscope feel in its classic jammy black raspberry fruits and notes of spice box, acacia flowers, bacon fat, and smoked game-like aromas and flavors. Iconic Australian Shiraz.

Shiraz was first brought to Australia in 1832 by James Busby, unwittingly with the help and co-operation of the French themselves! Today, Shiraz has become the country's most planted variety, synonymous with the ultimate expression of Australian red wine making. Icons such as Penfolds Grange and Henschke Hill of Grace are now highly collectable and recognised amongst the world's great wines. It remains our biggest selling varietal.

Find the best Shiraz wines here.

The spiritual home of Shiraz in Australia remains old vine vineyards in the Barossa Valley and McLaren Vale. Central Victoria also leads the charge, however, newer regions such as Margaret River, Heathcote and the Yarra Valley (Victoria) are taking Shiraz in alternative directions. Top producers include Torbreck, Sons of Eden, Standish, Greenock Creek, Mr. Riggs, d'Arenberg and Kay Brothers. Also look out for wines from France's Northern Rhone. Leading appellations here are Hermitage and Cote-Rotie. Other appellations such as Cornas, St. Joseph and Saint-Péray produce full bodied, early drinking reds that offer a great introduction to the region's style.
