The tiny Gomersal estate sits on some tough vineyard country, where both vines and viticulturalist are forced to struggle. Typically yields are no more than 1.5 tonnes per acre. Owner/viticulturalist, Barry White gets his recompense in his Shiraz.

The vineyard's unusual name came about after the outbreak of the First World War when the distrust of all things German reached such paranoiac proportions, that South Australian towns began to change their German sounding names to 'more respectable' English titles. 'New Mecklenburg' became 'Gomersal' – a name derived from a West Yorkshire village. Ironically, no one bothered to research the origin of the title, which turned out to be as German as the vineyard's founders.

‘Rich, robust and bold with superb concentration and power.’

Matured in a combination of new and American oak hogsheads for 22 months. Dense inky black heart with a deep dark red black hue. Wafting out of the glass are potent scents of dark plum, liquorice and dark chocolate which are complimented by vanillin oak, subtle scorched earth and spicy mocha notes. Rich, thick and sumptuous, the full bodied palate is awash with opulent dark plum, liquorice and black cherry fruits. Spicy vanillin oak, mocha, earth and pepper characteristics flow though the back half. A ripe yet firm tannin structure lends a muscular feel to the long lavish yet robust finish.
Drink over the next 5-6 years.
Alc. 14.8%

Other Reviews….
Gorgeously ripe and perfumed on the nose showing dark and purple fruit intensity, cedary oak, cocoa and warm spice aromas. The palate delivers excellent concentration and density, wonderfully complemented by fleshy texture and finely woven tannins. Powerful yet stylish with wonderful balance and structure.
