Pinot Noir

While we continue to expand our collection of Burgundies, more and more new-world winemakers are coming to terms with this challenging variety. Australians have identified Geelong, the Yarra Valley and the Mornington Peninsula in Victoria as suited to premium Pinot Noir. More recently, Tasmania has shot up the ranks. Mount Mary, Farr Rising and Tolpuddle are names to seek out. New Zealand is also producing some compelling, full bodied wines. Look for regions like Martinborough, Marlborough and Central Otago.

From a close-planted single vineyard in Seville, in the Upper Yarra. Fully destemmed with 10 months in oak (20% new). A light ruby red. With its aromas of red fruits, sweet spices and a hint of lavender and incense stick, there's a lot going on here. Fine, textured and mouth-filling, this has both good acidity and persistent, gently grippy tannins. Will be even better with another six months in bottle. Drink by 2025.

The 2017 Pinot Noir (Sonoma Coast) is a stellar appellation-level wine from Peay. Light on its feet, perfumed and super-expressive, it has much to offer. Sweet red cherry, plum, rose petal, lavender and spice all develop in the glass. This is a very serious, appellation-level wine done entirely from estate fruit. Don't miss it. Drink 2020-2029.

Pale ruby-purple, the 2017 Estate Pinot Noir Pomarium has delicate scents of tangerine peel, rosewater, licorice, tea leaves and tree bark with bright, fresh red berry fruits at the core. In the mouth, it’s medium-bodied and silky, slowly expanding to bright, bitters-laced fruits with bursts of juiciness, loads of nuance and a very long, ethereal finish. What a gorgeous expression! 550 cases were made.

The 2017 Pinot Noir Estate Pomarium is the most exotic, flamboyant wine in this range from Peay. Soaring aromatics and layers of bold, racy fruit rush out of the glass. Like the other 2017s, the Pomarium needs time to fully come together. Even so, it is impressive today. Crushed raspberry, pomegranate, mint and rose petal are all beautifully lifted in this sublime Pinot Noir. In this tasting, the Pomarium is marked by a very specific exotic quality.

The 2016 Pinot Noir Estate Pomarium is bright, focused and tightly wound, with a distinctly red-fruit and mineral-leaning set of aromas and flavors. The 2016 is endowed with striking translucence and nuance, but it also needs at least a few years in bottle to be at its very best. The focus, tension and energy here are remarkable.

Medium ruby-purple, the 2017 Estate Pinot Noir Ama bursts with a deep well of aromas: cranberry sauce, burnt orange peel and aniseed are accented by notes of oolong tea, forest floor, iron and iodine. In the mouth, it's medium-bodied, broody, concentrated and layered with a long, flavorful finish. This is a bigger, bolder and spicier version of Ama that offers immediate drinkability straight out of the gate with its bright freshness and bold flavors, but will age gracefully in the cellar for another 5-7 years. 550 cases were made.

A brilliant wine, Peay's 2017 Pinot Noir Estate Ama offers an explosion of sweet red/purplish berry fruit, floral notes and spice, all with a hint of blood orange-infused acidity that gives the wine vibrancy. The 2017 Ama is wonderfully bold and luscious, and yet remains light on its feet. A striking wine from Peay.

The 2017 Pinot Noir Estate Scallop Shelf is distinguished by its bright, focused personality and energy. As it often is, the Scallop Shelf is a wine of reserve and tension, showing plenty of savory and mineral character and less overt fruit than some of the other wines in the range. The 2017 is likely to require at least a few years to come into its own, but it is super-impressive.

I've long loved the pinot noirs from Pegasus Bay. There's a minerally vibe that always draws me in. Complex and meaty with herbal and floral nuance that keeps shifting in the glass, keeping the old schnozz on its toes. The interplay of fruit, acidity and tannin is fascinating; kinetic and sinewy with a gentle struck-flint reduction lending added complexity as the wine slowly trails off. Drink by 2036.

The nose has a perfumed like quality to it with scents of violets, dark to black cherries, anise and dark plum streaming through the nostrils. Some subtle toasty cedar, dried herb and forest floor notes are also evident. Light to medium weight, the richly fruited palate carries plenty of appeal with a fleshy feel and abundant spicy dark to black cherries, dark plum and anise flavours. Subtle earth, delicately toasted cedar and dried herb elements linger underneath. Velvet like tannins finishing long and juicy.

Whole berry fermentation and maturation in mostly older French oak (just 20% new). Fresh-picked black cherries, blood plum skin and blackberries. Bay leaf, star anise and turned earth. Hints of olive tapenade. This is snappy and poised with great fruit weight and structure. Excellent for the pricepoint. Drink by 2026.

Whole bunches (40%) and French barriques (30% new); 10 months maturation on fine lees. Lingonberries, redcurrant and strawberry leaves. The bunchy component adds a sappy, ripe mulberry leafiness and orange bitters on the palate. It's a wine that is designed and crafted from knowledge. Will cellar well. The oak just slightly clips the pureness of the fruit. Drink by 2028.

The perfect vintage got underway 7 days after Pip gave birth to her second daughter. Three clonal blocks are wild-fermented with 25% whole bunches, each spending 30 days on skins and 18 months in French oak (30% new). It isn't surprising that this should be a very, very powerful and complex pinot, forest floor the platform on which spicy, savoury dark fruits and briary whole bunch characters should take control. Previously released under the Domaine Boisson-Vadot label, wines from their holdings are now made and presented under the labels of Bernard Boisson's children; his son Pierre Boisson and daughter Anne Boisson. While the two children vinify separately, they share the same cellar in Meursault, and produce wines that are more similar than they are different. Vine age is impressive, with many plots over 60 years old, and no herbicides or fertilisers used. Wines are fermented wild in barrel, thereafter raised in oak for 19-22 months, with no more than 30% new oak used predominantly for the top cuvées.

Red wines represent around 25% of production of the domaine and the Boissons are every bit as serious about their reds as their whites. All the Pinot Noir is 100% destemmed, with traditional, minimal intervention vinification. They undergo a cold soak before the gradual onset of alcoholic fermentation. The end of the vatting is deliberately drawn out by keeping the temperature down, to allow a process more akin to infusion than extraction. The family want the wines to be pure, fragrant, eminently drinkable.

The fruit for this wine comes from the two Haute Cotes vineyards of ‘Les Chaignots’ in Orches, and ‘Sous la Velle’ in Baubigny.

Pierre-Henri Rougeot not only crafts the wines at his family property, Domaine Rougeot based in Meursault, since the 2017 vintage he has also made wines under his own label. Before returning to Domaine Rougeot, Pierre-Henri worked at Domaine De Montille in Volnay, as well as selling oak barrels to some of the finest names in Burgundy. The connections formed during this time have allowed Pierre-Henri to source from a collection of prime plots throughout the Cote, favouring only organically farmed grapes. Pierre-Henri has refined his winemaking along the lines of luminaries such as Lalou Bize-Leroy of Domaine Leroy, and as a result he uses 100% whole bunch to macerate the reds which results in characterful yet silky structure on the palate. When it comes to pressing the reds, he uses a modern vertical press rather than the common pneumatic press to extract very pure, concentrated and fresh juice. The whites are pressed directly to barrels, with no battonage and aging sur lees. There is neither filtration nor clarification and only indigenous yeasts are used for the fermentations. The oak regiment is light with enough new oak to lift the attributes of each wine but it's subtle enough to be almost impossible to notice. Pierre-Henri is making waves in France and around the world and is a name to watch.

The Rue au Port vineyard is located exactly on the Pommard alluvial fan, with rich soils composed of clay and limestone, well drained thanks to gravel and rocky debris. The earth is in places reddened by iron oxide.

Rich purple, grapes from 30 to 35 year old vines picked late, as ever, by this supplier, purple velvet, a little luxurious coating. Actually, this comes through very well on the palate, with some elegance, nothing unduly heady here. A little tension behind after all, with an attractively perfumed finish. No new wood

The corks used come from one tiny supplier and are extra long and extra wide (55mm x 25mm) for the village, 1er cru and Grand cru wines and are untreated with no paraffin and the bottles are then sealed with soft wax to ensure no problems with premature oxidation. The resulting wines are built to age classically up to 10 years or more.

An obsession with a fickle varietal.

Once you experience it, you never forget it. For some wine lovers, Pinot Noir becomes an obsession. While promising one of world's greatest wine experiences, it can also deliver some of the most disappointing. What is it about Pinot that makes it so frustratingly variable? There are known quality factors which offer encouragement to winemakers. Micro-climates have been observed to play an important part in a successful matrix, particularly the diurnal temperature range. Pinot Noir is a little like Riesling, in the sense that it requires warm, but not overly hot days and cool nights to fully develop its maximum flavour potential. Sunshine hours, rainfall, time and rate of precipitation are all important. Countering this is the fact that the same clone will not respond to differences in micro-climate in the same way. Older vines make better wines. Creative and adaptive viticultural management and winemaking are essential. Buy Pinot Noir online. Any questions about our products or shipping?
