Pinot Noir
While we continue to expand our collection of Burgundies, more and more new-world winemakers are coming to terms with this challenging variety. Australians have identified Geelong, the Yarra Valley and the Mornington Peninsula in Victoria as suited to premium Pinot Noir. More recently, Tasmania has shot up the ranks. Mount Mary, Farr Rising and Tolpuddle are names to seek out. New Zealand is also producing some compelling, full bodied wines. Look for regions like Martinborough, Marlborough and Central Otago.

Whole berry fermentation and maturation in mostly older French oak (just 20% new). Fresh-picked black cherries, blood plum skin and blackberries. Bay leaf, star anise and turned earth. Hints of olive tapenade. This is snappy and poised with great fruit weight and structure. Excellent for the pricepoint. Drink by 2026.

Whole bunches (40%) and French barriques (30% new); 10 months maturation on fine lees. Lingonberries, redcurrant and strawberry leaves. The bunchy component adds a sappy, ripe mulberry leafiness and orange bitters on the palate. It's a wine that is designed and crafted from knowledge. Will cellar well. The oak just slightly clips the pureness of the fruit. Drink by 2028.

The perfect vintage got underway 7 days after Pip gave birth to her second daughter. Three clonal blocks are wild-fermented with 25% whole bunches, each spending 30 days on skins and 18 months in French oak (30% new). It isn't surprising that this should be a very, very powerful and complex pinot, forest floor the platform on which spicy, savoury dark fruits and briary whole bunch characters should take control. Drink by 2032.

Alc. 13% - 2019 Domaine Pierre Boisson Bourgogne Hautes Cotes de Beaune RougeBurgundy, FRANCE$94. 99Bottle$1139.88 DozenABV: 13%Closure: Cork
Previously released under the Domaine Boisson-Vadot label, wines from their holdings are now made and presented under the labels of Bernard Boisson's children; his son Pierre Boisson and daughter Anne Boisson. While the two children vinify separately, they share the same cellar in Meursault, and produce wines that are more similar than they are different. Vine age is impressive, with many plots over 60 years old, and no herbicides or fertilisers used. Wines are fermented wild in barrel, thereafter raised in oak for 19-22 months, with no more than 30% new oak used predominantly for the top cuvées.
Red wines represent around 25% of production of the domaine and the Boissons are every bit as serious about their reds as their whites. All the Pinot Noir is 100% destemmed, with traditional, minimal intervention vinification. They undergo a cold soak before the gradual onset of alcoholic fermentation. The end of the vatting is deliberately drawn out by keeping the temperature down, to allow a process more akin to infusion than extraction. The family want the wines to be pure, fragrant, eminently drinkable.
The fruit for this wine comes from the two Haute Cotes vineyards of ‘Les Chaignots’ in Orches, and ‘Sous la Velle’ in Baubigny.

Pierre-Henri Rougeot not only crafts the wines at his family property, Domaine Rougeot based in Meursault, since the 2017 vintage he has also made wines under his own label. Before returning to Domaine Rougeot, Pierre-Henri worked at Domaine De Montille in Volnay, as well as selling oak barrels to some of the finest names in Burgundy. The connections formed during this time have allowed Pierre-Henri to source from a collection of prime plots throughout the Cote, favouring only organically farmed grapes. Pierre-Henri has refined his winemaking along the lines of luminaries such as Lalou Bize-Leroy of Domaine Leroy, and as a result he uses 100% whole bunch to macerate the reds which results in characterful yet silky structure on the palate. When it comes to pressing the reds, he uses a modern vertical press rather than the common pneumatic press to extract very pure, concentrated and fresh juice. The whites are pressed directly to barrels, with no battonage and aging sur lees. There is neither filtration nor clarification and only indigenous yeasts are used for the fermentations. The oak regiment is light with enough new oak to lift the attributes of each wine but it's subtle enough to be almost impossible to notice. Pierre-Henri is making waves in France and around the world and is a name to watch.
The Rue au Port vineyard is located exactly on the Pommard alluvial fan, with rich soils composed of clay and limestone, well drained thanks to gravel and rocky debris. The earth is in places reddened by iron oxide.

Rich purple, grapes from 30 to 35 year old vines picked late, as ever, by this supplier, purple velvet, a little luxurious coating. Actually, this comes through very well on the palate, with some elegance, nothing unduly heady here. A little tension behind after all, with an attractively perfumed finish. No new wood

Notes from the winery....
Produced from grapes grown at Pipers Brook and at Strathlynn on the west bank of the Tamar River, 70km away. These 30-year-old vines give low yields with increase concentration and flavour. Predominantly Vertical Shoot Positioned (VSP) trellises, which expose bunches to the sun, thus achieving full maturity with well-balanced flavours and fine, ripe tannins.
The wine was gently pressed off skins using both basket press and bag press prior to full malolactic fermentation. Bottled under screw cap to preserve intensely perfumed aromatics and expressive fruit. Mulberry, black cherry and earthy notes with hints of licorice. Abundant berry fruits with subtle spice and soft, silky tannins. -

2022 Place of Changing Winds Beyond the Forest Pinot NoirMacedon Ranges, Victoria, AUSTRALIA$250. 00Bottle$3000.00 DozenABV: 13.5%Closure: Diam CorkThe Place of Changing Winds team discovered that most parcels performed best as part of the overarching blend, Between Two Mountains. However, there was an exception: a cuvée with remarkable perfume, precision, and finesse that warranted separate bottling. This wine comes from the north-to-east facing amphitheatre overlooking the forest around the property, hence its name. Aged for 18 months in 100% Stockinger casks, with 50% new oak, it is a pure, perfumed Pinot with enough structure for aging. It was bottled at the end of January 2024.

Two pinots made in ’22, a blend under the Between Two Mountains label and this new addition, comprising a small parcel of fruit off the north-facing vineyard. It is aged for 18 months in Stockinger casks, 50% new, which imparts a distinctive sweet wood spice/char flavour. Expect some cherry compote and black fruits, yet this is very much savoury in outlook. Wafts of undergrowth, twigs, menthol and amaro. Textural, lightly drying tannins, a slight raw wood note, yet everything is neatly placed. Drink 2025 - 2034.

Jane Faulkner - Halliday's Australian Wine CompanionThe 2022 Beyond the Forest Pinot Noir is so perfumed. It bursts forth from the glass with red-hearted summer fig, cherry, violets and Boscobel rose, raspberry pip, a hint of pomegranate, crushed rocks and native leaves. The wine is possessed of such a lovely shape: all concentration and sapidity on the front while it patiently tails out over a long, languid finish; it is persistent and fine and so composed. I love the fruit, I love the tannins, I love the balance. It feels good to drink and to chew. Superb. This is one of Australia's very finest Pinots. It's made in the same way as the Between Two Mountains Pinot and was matured in 100% Stockinger casks for 18 months, 50% new. A total of 747 bottles were filled, with 24 magnums. 13.5% alcohol, sealed under Diam and wax.

Erin Larkin - Robert Parker's Wine AdvocateFrom an isolated section of the vineyard and a parcel that felt distinct from the intent of blending. Similar to Between Two Mountains, it rests in Stockinger wood, 50% new, before bottling.
Supreme finesse. All the accolades and hallelujahs. It sets up with a huge volume of fine scents, cherries ‘n’ berries, a fog of sweet turned earth and dried leaves, peppery spice, lifted alpine herbal elements and some faint mahogany woodiness. The palate a mime of the aromas in a taut and tumbling bundle of grippy, almost Italianate tannin profile, finishing spicy, softly woody, fruity and savoury. It’s impressive and so very composed, elegant, luxurious despite its tension and travel. To be savoured if not to stand back and admire grandly while drinking. Sound the alarums. Drink 2024 - 2040.

2022 Place of Changing Winds Between Two Mountains Pinot NoirMacedon Ranges, Victoria, AUSTRALIA$150. 00Bottle$1800.00 DozenABV: 13.5%Closure: Diam CorkPlace of Changing Winds is located between Mount Macedon and Mount Bullengarook, which inspired the name of this cuvée. The Between Two Mountains, the most representative of the season, is made from all the estate's plots except those used for the Beyond the Forest cuvée. It matured for 18 months in Stockinger casks, with 50% new oak, though the impact of the new oak is minimal due to the large 1,000-liter cask size. It was bottled in January 2024.

A blend of all the estate sites, except the small parcel making up the Beyond The Forest pinot. This needed a lot of time to unfurl, so best to decant it. It’ll then reward you with morello and sweet dark cherries, warm earth and sumac aromas. Full bodied, savoury with pleasing supple tannins. Drink 2024 - 2034.

Jane Faulkner - Halliday's Australian Wine CompanionNamed for its more or less equidistance between Mount Macedon and Mount Bullengarook. Produced from all plots on the estate. Matured in 50% new and old Stockinger casks.
Svelte and sleek with distinct succulence and pucker. A sheath of lacy, granitic tannin over dark cherry, tumbles of dried herbs, woody spice, some nori and truffle-like characters in the mix and a general sense of ultra pure, tart cherry juice and flecks of dried currant and cranberry. A real feast for the senses here. Incredible extension of flavour and an almost unnerving consistency to texture in all that – a long and exacting ride of character and charm. Loads of evocative perfume too. Wonderful, all up. Drink 2024 - 2040.

Mike Bennie - The Wine FrontThe 2022 Between Two Mountains Pinot Noir is spicy and fine on the nose, with cherry pip, raspberry leaf, crushed rocks, pumice stone tannins and black tea. In the mouth, the wine is all about rose petals and iron, silty tannins and lashings of blood plum skin, with violets and Pink Lady apples, rosemary, blood orange, arnica and a very gentle amaro persuasion. A light finish is made persistent by enduring tannins that chew and sway. It's so nice. Distinct. It's easy to swoon somewhat over the packaging, which is not important to wine quality but an indication of aesthetics. It matured for 18 months in Stockinger casks (50% new) and was bottled in January 2024. 13.2% alcohol, sealed under Diam.

Deep crimson purple. An exotically perfumed bouquet, partly from the inclusion of one-third whole bunches in the ferment and 18 months maturation in used Stockinger barrels. The power and length of the wine are extraordinary, and the 'drink to' date should prove conservative. Drink by 2040.

Supple textured, deep and gently savoury, mellow red and black cherry fruit characters, sourness in a pleasant sense, alpine herbs, a slick dusting of clove and cinnamon, bright, blood orange acidity and licks of game meat, truffle and autumnal savoury elements. The fruit was 90% destemmed, and post-ferment was matured for 18 months in Stockinger oak (25% new). This has great clarity and depth of colour, and an extra layer of richness, initially with the essence of dark berries, switching to red berries minutes later, the mouthfeel supple and smooth. Drink by 2043.

James Halliday's Australian Wine CompanionDeep red with a tinge of purple, the bouquet powerful and very complex, concentration and power here, as well as detail. Forest-floor, humus, dark-fruits and fivespices, earth and dried herbs. There is tremendous concentration and power, a deep core of sweet fruit, the tannins ample and mouth-coating but also beautifully balanced, the length prodigious. An outstanding pinot noir in a bigger style.

Huon Hooke - The Real ReviewLess than 10% whole bunch from vines planted at 20000 to 33000 vines per hectare. Immense. Need gnomes to farm it. The yields are extra low too.
High toned perfume, lots of white pepper, preserved cherry, red plum, roast vegetables, anise. So attractive. The palate has a come hither fleshiness and richness, dark spice, new leather, brightness to fruit but its the dark stuff and yet finds a crispness with incredible inward concentration. Gravelly grip with a glide. It has this open weave and flavour, depth too but has this really distinct feel of ‘there is more to come’ – such a good personality in that regard.

From vines planted at 20,000 to 33,000 vines per ha. Another dimension altogether, with utterly exceptional intensity and focus, line, length and balance. Despite its power, it’s feline in its balance, promising a 20+ year future. Its length impresses more each time. Glorious wine… drink to 2039.

James Halliday - The Weekend Australian MagazineGrown mostly on the closest planted vines – they range between 20,000 and 33,000 per hectare – with some grapes from the surrounding vines “to fill the fermenter”. Yield was around 100-200 grams per vines. All grapes were destemmed. It was bottled unfined and unfiltered. 568 bottles made.
I wouldn’t normally say this but I love the dryness of this wine. It comes with flesh, spice, perfume and texture and in that context the dryness has its own appeal. The flavours here throw redcurrant, blueberry, orange peel, sweet spice, fennel and floral notes at you, oak adding to the wine’s velvety texture more than to its flavour. Tannin is so fine it’s like icing, buried, fluttered; like the felt of a snooker table, the surrounding fruit assembled to house it. We walk quality terrain here.

James Halliday - The Weekend Australian MagazineIt’s not your average Pinot Noir. It’s varietal but it has a power to it, a force. When I say this I’m referring to its flavour profile; it’s actually a wine of detail and finesse, it’s just that the fruit flavours have a brooding darkness. Boysenberry stirred with anise, black cherry buried in undergrowth, five spice notes licking at sweet herbs. It’s a wine of black humour, if you will. The most impressive thing, as is often the way, is the formation of tannin, and the way it gathers that which has come before and completes it. I want to use the word spark in relation to the tannin; I just do. Perhaps what I mean is that it ignites the aftertaste. In any case I was ambivalent to the Place of Changing Winds project until I tasted this wine, and then in a rush I wanted to know everything and more about it. Gorgeousness in wine is nothing if not inspiring.

James Halliday - The Weekend Australian MagazineThe ‘entry level’ pinot noir, albeit it’s the same remarkable, exacting Macedon Ranges site, with vine density from 12,000 to 14,500 vines per hectare. Viticulture and site is the main conversation around the Place Of Changing Winds wines, something the patron, Rob Walters, has instilled in many around him as he has shared knowledge and ideas around the Australian wine community. Image has a wax seal, but my bottle was a foil capsule.
This is bony and skeletal, a tongue tugging experience in a fine-grained sheath of tannin, barely there black berry fruit flavours, anise and fennel, malty notes, wet slate rockiness and burr of rough velvet in tannin and texture. Tightly wound, slender in its grumble across the palate, finishes with characteristic bright acidity, amaro-tinged as it feels comes from this site, and a sense of ‘lively minerality’ as I explained the finish to someone standing near me as I was tasting for this note. A reluctant pal, but I admired the tension and restraint. Wait.

The growing season began with consistent spring rainfall, fostering strong, healthy canopies and plentiful bunch numbers. Mild conditions persisted into summer, with few days exceeding 25°C. Early autumn brought sunny days and cool oceanic evenings, marking the start of veraison. This was followed by a return of warm temperatures, leading to a prolonged and leisurely vintage. The fruit matured slowly, developing integrated and balanced phenolic profiles.
This 2023 Pinot Noir is a blend of Cooinda Vale and Butcher’s Hill, with contributions from smaller parcels within the Coal River Valley. It underwent wild fermentation with 5% whole bunches over 14 days, followed by a 7-day post-ferment maceration in 2.5-tonne open ferment stainless steel tanks, with daily pump-overs. The wine was matured for 11 months in French oak, with 10% being new oak, using a mix of 90% puncheons (500L) and 10% barriques (225L).

Jane Faulkner – James Halliday’s Wine Companion
An obsession with a fickle varietal.
Once you experience it, you never forget it. For some wine lovers, Pinot Noir becomes an obsession. While promising one of world's greatest wine experiences, it can also deliver some of the most disappointing. What is it about Pinot that makes it so frustratingly variable? There are known quality factors which offer encouragement to winemakers. Micro-climates have been observed to play an important part in a successful matrix, particularly the diurnal temperature range. Pinot Noir is a little like Riesling, in the sense that it requires warm, but not overly hot days and cool nights to fully develop its maximum flavour potential. Sunshine hours, rainfall, time and rate of precipitation are all important. Countering this is the fact that the same clone will not respond to differences in micro-climate in the same way. Older vines make better wines. Creative and adaptive viticultural management and winemaking are essential. Buy Pinot Noir online. Any questions about our products or shipping?
