While we continue to expand our collection of Burgundies, more and more new-world winemakers are coming to terms with this challenging variety. Australians have identified Geelong, the Yarra Valley and the Mornington Peninsula in Victoria as suited to premium Pinot Noir. More recently, Tasmania has shot up the ranks. Mount Mary, Farr Rising and Tolpuddle are names to seek out. New Zealand is also producing some compelling, full bodied wines. Look for regions like Martinborough, Marlborough and Central Otago.
- 2020 Mayer Close Planted Pinot NoirYarra Valley, Victoria, AUSTRALIA$54. 99Bottle$659.88 DozenABV: 13%Closure: Diam Cork
German born Timo Mayer, along with partner Rhonda Ferguson established Mayer in 1999, on the slopes of Mt Toolebewong, between Healesville & Woori Yallock. They produce a small range of hand crafted, single vineyard wines, believing that wines are made in the vineyard and not the winery. All wines are unfined and unfiltered to show the true expression of the vineyard. Vines are often close-planted, and winemaking frequently utilises a generous use of whole bunch.
When Timo cheered "bring back the funk!", it was this wine that originally delivered on the promise. He's since released the Dr expression which dials up this ethos even further, but his Close Planted Pinot still holds a special place in many Pinot lover's hearts. Wonderfully aromatic and silky, the power of the Pinot fruit can be deceptive here, but there's no mistaking this is one of the Yarra Valley's finest wines each year.
Other Reviews....
Supple, sweet fruited in a way but that profile is caged in soft tannins, some brambly and peppery characters, a little truffley-mushroomy funk. It’s a wine that feels fresh but bitter sweet, pleasingly so and distinct. Tannins grow and grow, borderline Italianate, al dente and lending some good savouriness to the pretty fruit profile. Very good wine.

It’s about 25% whole bunch (one in four barrels is the Dr Mayer 100% whole bunch wine), but that would go up to 50% if it was a hot year, which 2018 wasn’t. This is the ‘Close Planted’ designated wine, of the past.
In-your-face perfume of strawberry and raspberry, cherry jam, faint white pepper, almond nutty-savoury. Palate is very fine, ultra fresh, delicate yet bursts forth with all that red berry sweetness but that whips away quickly to almost elemental, pulverised gravel and granite mineral sorts of things. A wine to savour, it feels like quality and interest personified. It’s fantastic.

About 25% of this is whole bunch. Dark colours from 2019. Dark flavours. Close-planted section of the vineyard. Dark choc-cherry scents, aromas of wet slate, a touch of smoke and dried green herb characters. Chewy in the palate, mouthwatering acidity, light cherry characters, more of the smoke and green herbs. Something about the wine says ‘autumnal’ to me here. Quite a powerful style too. Very good.

All whole bunch, all the time. This is a blend of all major plots across the vineyards on the Mayer estate. “Stalky shit!”. Sour and sweet cherry aromas, green herb, whiffs of smoky jalapeno, white pepper. Fragrant thing. Crisp, crunchy texture, light on in weight in a way but packs in heaps of detail and flavour with fine webs of tannin, exceptional length. Tannins are pretty darn amazing, actually. I keep pausing on that thought. I love this wine.

This is 100% whole bunch, hence it becomes the ‘Dr’ label in the pinots of Timo Mayer. As an aside, I got to try Timo’s chardonnay brandy, and it is outstanding. It won’t be a release, but do track it down if you do an appointment with him. Outstanding.
Pepper and clove scents over ripe cherry, pomegranate juice and a whiff of Campari. Light Negroni-like flavours in the best kind of way, but the wine is fine-boned, sheathed in a leisurely web of skinsy tannin with pepper and green herb savourinesss accompanying fine, fresh, gently sweet-sour cherry and cranberry flavours. Sleek, long, elegant are good words too. The texture is superb, the drinkability riotous. Savour this.

I’m thinking 2023 was a very good year for Tasmanian Pinot Noir.
It fairly pops with red cherry and ripe strawberry, there’s also some spice, dried flowers and something a little bit earthy, like brown mushrooms, with a just a hint of smoky reduction. It’s juicy and succulent, with cool balanced acidity, and if you swish it around in your mouth, there’s fine emery board tannin that feels very nice, along with a pleasantly sappy edge. The finish is long, spicy and sweetly fruited. It’s lovely now, though likely better again with a couple more years under its belt. Drink 2025-2033+

A more elegant and spicier nose freely offers up its aromas of black cherry, violet and ripe plum. The finer and attractively energetic flavors exude evident minerality on the dusty and almost chalky finale that is also noticeably austere. Drink through 2028+.

Allen Meadows - BurghoundA reasonably full purple and attractively perfumed on the nose, the floral side of raspberry. There is a light wood reduction too, as not yet racked. Shows even more on the palate, with some tannins too. Still, there is plenty to this Gevrey and once it has reached the right moment for bottling, I think we shall have a good wine. This may be a conservative assessment now. Drink from 2025-2030.

Bernard clone 777; the vines are bunch-thinned three times, the wine matured in French oak. Good colour; plum and black cherry fruits have a savoury/earthy bedrock that will repay cellaring for as long as you can keep your hands off it.
Drink to 2036.

2019 Montalto Pennon Hill Pinot NoirMornington Peninsula, Victoria, AUSTRALIA$27. 99Bottle$335.88 DozenCellar: Drink now - 6 Years (2021-2027)ABV: 13.7%Closure: StelvinSourced from a combination of Montalto’s vineyard sites at Red Hill, Main Ridge and Tuerong, the Pennon Hill range of wines are made in a more ready to drink style. For the Pinot Noir 7% of the blend underwent ‘Montalto-style’ whole-bunch fermentation; this technique involves loading whole bunches into a 2T open-fermenter and allowing them to undergo 10 to 14 days of carbonic maceration before being destemmed into 2 tonne open fermenters where primary wild fermentation is completed. At the completion of primary fermentation, the grapes were pressed and the wine transferred to French oak barriques and Puncheons (26% new) for natural malo-lactic fermentation. Average skin contact time was 17 days. Barrel maturation was for 9 months.

An obsession with a fickle varietal.
Once you experience it, you never forget it. For some wine lovers, Pinot Noir becomes an obsession. While promising one of world's greatest wine experiences, it can also deliver some of the most disappointing. What is it about Pinot that makes it so frustratingly variable? There are known quality factors which offer encouragement to winemakers. Micro-climates have been observed to play an important part in a successful matrix, particularly the diurnal temperature range. Pinot Noir is a little like Riesling, in the sense that it requires warm, but not overly hot days and cool nights to fully develop its maximum flavour potential. Sunshine hours, rainfall, time and rate of precipitation are all important. Countering this is the fact that the same clone will not respond to differences in micro-climate in the same way. Older vines make better wines. Creative and adaptive viticultural management and winemaking are essential. Buy Pinot Noir online. Any questions about our products or shipping?
