While we continue to expand our collection of Burgundies, more and more new-world winemakers are coming to terms with this challenging variety. Australians have identified Geelong, the Yarra Valley and the Mornington Peninsula in Victoria as suited to premium Pinot Noir. More recently, Tasmania has shot up the ranks. Mount Mary, Farr Rising and Tolpuddle are names to seek out. New Zealand is also producing some compelling, full bodied wines. Look for regions like Martinborough, Marlborough and Central Otago.

I’m thinking 2023 was a very good year for Tasmanian Pinot Noir.
It fairly pops with red cherry and ripe strawberry, there’s also some spice, dried flowers and something a little bit earthy, like brown mushrooms, with a just a hint of smoky reduction. It’s juicy and succulent, with cool balanced acidity, and if you swish it around in your mouth, there’s fine emery board tannin that feels very nice, along with a pleasantly sappy edge. The finish is long, spicy and sweetly fruited. It’s lovely now, though likely better again with a couple more years under its belt. Drink 2025-2033+

A more elegant and spicier nose freely offers up its aromas of black cherry, violet and ripe plum. The finer and attractively energetic flavors exude evident minerality on the dusty and almost chalky finale that is also noticeably austere. Drink through 2028+.

Allen Meadows - BurghoundA reasonably full purple and attractively perfumed on the nose, the floral side of raspberry. There is a light wood reduction too, as not yet racked. Shows even more on the palate, with some tannins too. Still, there is plenty to this Gevrey and once it has reached the right moment for bottling, I think we shall have a good wine. This may be a conservative assessment now. Drink from 2025-2030.

It’s been a while between Moondarras and Studebakers but here’s one. Always idiosyncratic wines, and talking points, from a winemaker with a left-of-centre approach. Don’t be bored, ever, they shout.
What a start! Ferrous, warm asphalt, earthy notes, manure even, an extreme and exotic direction of reduction awaits on first sniff. Let it lie and there’s beautiful cherry and rose hip tea scents, similar in the palate which is more yielding in first minutes, tightened by light yet lacy tannins, following through a sinewy and long finish. It’s a very beautiful wine past the reduction, but that might be beauty too. I love this. This is great.

2019 Moorooduc Estate McIntyre Pinot NoirMornington Peninsula, Victoria, AUSTRALIA$79. 99Bottle$959.88 DozenABV: 13.5%Closure: StelvinOther Reviews....
As the flagship pinot noir, this lives up to its reputation. It's a whorl of the darkest cherries, covered in baking spices, a fleck of mint and an overlay of savoury inputs, the French oak neatly integrated. It builds on the palate, full bodied but not unwieldy. mouth-filling and generous, with the plushest tannins, ripe and sweet. Very satisfying and approachable now. Drink by 2029.

Jane Faulkner - James Halliday's Australian Wine CompanionThe 2019 The Moorooduc McIntyre Pinot Noir is clearly built for the longer haul: the tannins are firmer and tighter in the mouth (I like them like this, but that's a style choice), and the fruit has weight and presence. The fruit is warm, as was the vintage, but it doesn't impede the flow or discourse of flavor across the palate. The length through the finish is the final tell-all. The construction is classy—this wine is well built and elegant, with all corners packed with concentrated fruit. Lovely. Pleasure. Drink 2022 - 2032.

Now, this has come together beautifully and appears so gentle and refined. Subtle aromas of spiced cherries and autumnal leaves, sumac and woodsy spices. The palate is shy of medium-bodied with fine, lacy tannins, a core of sweet-ish fruit and a savoury overlay. It’s compelling and totally enticing, so it’s a shame this is not out now – boo hoo! In 2024 apparently, but worth following up.

Almost gentle and pretty but that doesn’t mean wimpy. It’s lightly sappy, with red fruits obviously – cherry to the fore – plus blood orange, exotic spices and a savouriness throughout. An obsession with a fickle varietal.
Once you experience it, you never forget it. For some wine lovers, Pinot Noir becomes an obsession. While promising one of world's greatest wine experiences, it can also deliver some of the most disappointing. What is it about Pinot that makes it so frustratingly variable? There are known quality factors which offer encouragement to winemakers. Micro-climates have been observed to play an important part in a successful matrix, particularly the diurnal temperature range. Pinot Noir is a little like Riesling, in the sense that it requires warm, but not overly hot days and cool nights to fully develop its maximum flavour potential. Sunshine hours, rainfall, time and rate of precipitation are all important. Countering this is the fact that the same clone will not respond to differences in micro-climate in the same way. Older vines make better wines. Creative and adaptive viticultural management and winemaking are essential. Buy Pinot Noir online. Any questions about our products or shipping?
