Pinot Noir
While we continue to expand our collection of Burgundies, more and more new-world winemakers are coming to terms with this challenging variety. Australians have identified Geelong, the Yarra Valley and the Mornington Peninsula in Victoria as suited to premium Pinot Noir. More recently, Tasmania has shot up the ranks. Mount Mary, Farr Rising and Tolpuddle are names to seek out. New Zealand is also producing some compelling, full bodied wines. Look for regions like Martinborough, Marlborough and Central Otago.

Moderately firm reduction presently blocks an evaluation of the nose. Otherwise there is good intensity and salinity to the sleekly textured and beautifully well-detailed flavors that display excellent length on the firm, focused and youthfully austere finish. Patience strongly suggested.

Allen Meadows - BurghoundAromas of ripe cherries and blackberries, complemented by notions of rose petals, violets and musky spices preface the 2018 Chambolle Musigny Clos de l'Orme, a medium to full-bodied, velvety and layered wine that's multidimensional, concentration and gourmand while remaining lively and beautifully defined. This is an exquisite Chambolle.

William Kelley - Wine Advocate (Jan 2020)The 2018 Chambolle-Musigny Les Clos de l'Orme has a very intense nose compared to Cathiard’s other village cuvées, featuring black cherries, cassis and light blueberry aromas that are supremely well defined. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grained tannins and wonderful bead of acidity. It tightens up toward the finish, indicative of a wine that is determined to give two decades of pleasure. Just a wonderful Chambolle-Musigny.

The 2016 Nuits Saint-Georges 1er Cru Aux Murgers has a precise bouquet, tightly wound at the moment with black cherry, boysenberry and cold stone aromas, much more backward than the Aux Thorey. The palate is medium-bodied with fine grain tannin, tightly knit and focused, tensile with a precise, quite pointed, sorbet-fresh finish. There is something clockwork about this Murgers—every component synchronized the other.
92-94 points
Neal Martin - Wine Advocate #234 (Dec 2017)There is enough reduction to render the nose difficult to evaluate though it does seem ripe. Otherwise the restrained medium weight flavors possess excellent structural ripeness as well as fine size, weight and power on the intense, harmonious and mouth coating finish. This concentrated effort is a classic Murgers of muscle and power but no rusticity.

One-third of the 2016 Vosne-Romanée Village was lost to mildew this year and what survived is raised in 50% new oak. It has a very pure and suave bouquet: precise red berry fruit, sous-bois and cold slate-like aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with strict tannin, clean and fresh with a gorgeous blood orange note that enlivens the tensile red cherry and strawberry fruit on the finish. There is impressive substance to this village cru.

Neal Martin - Wine Advocate #234 (Dec 2017)A lightly spiced nose of ripe red currant, plum and violet is trimmed in just enough wood to mention. The caressing middle weight flavors are blessed with an abundance of dry extract that imparts a sleek and seductive mouthfeel as well as buffers the moderately firm tannic spine. I like the balance and this should drink well after only a few years of bottle age.

The 2017 Vosne-Romanée Les Suchots 1er Cru, matured in 57% new oak (Sébastien Cathiard and I did the math!), has a slight reduction on the nose, but underneath lies tightly coiled brambly red fruit mixed with stony, almost flinty aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with a smooth entry, and silky from start to finish, offering candied red berry fruit laced with blood orange and a hint of soy. Very harmonious and long, this is an accomplished Les Suchots for long-term aging.

Neal martin - VinousA whisper of wood can be found on the very ripe and beautifully layered array of red currant, Asian-style tea, lavender and violet aromas. The medium-bodied flavors are rich, intense and relatively robust with excellent depth and drive on the austere, backward and strikingly long finish. This beauty possesses outstanding potential but patience is indisputably required.

Around 25% of the production was lost because of frost with respect to Cathiard’s 2016 Nuits Saint-Georges 1er Cru Aux Thorey. It has an extremely floral bouquet loaded with crushed violets, so Vosne-Romanée like in style. Very ostentatious! The palate is medium-bodied with black cherries and blueberry fruit, strict tannin underneath that segue into with a sustained, peppery and quite penetrating finish. Maybe the showiest of Sebastien's wines from barrel, but you know that this is going to give so much joy once in bottle.

Neal Martin - Wine Advocate #234 (Dec 2017)A subtly spiced array speaks of ultra-fresh aromas of dark currant, violet, plum and soft earth wisps. The mid-palate of the middle weight flavors is deceptively pliant because as the lingering and lightly stony and rustic finish sits on the palate the supporting tannins become more evident. I very much like the depth and persistence though note that this will require a few years of aging.

The 2017 Chambolle-Musigny Les Clos de l’Orme, matured in 50% new oak, has an elegant, expressive bouquet of raspberry, wild strawberry and sous-bois aromas. Neal Martin - VinousHere there is no reductive funk with its expressive and high-toned nose of essence of red cherry, raspberry and a whiff of herbal tea. The cool, sleek and detailed flavors possess a lacy texture before culminating in a seductive, stony and youthfully austere finale. The 2017 Romanée-Saint-Vivant Grand Cru, two new barrels out of three in total, has a very refined, supremely focused bouquet of perfumed scents of black cherries, strawberry pastilles and subtle orange blossom aromas. The medium-bodied palate is extremely precise and detailed, with very fine tannin and transparent mineralité toward the finish (as if you can feel the "bones" of this R.S.V.). Sensual and intellectual to boot.

Neal Martin - VinousAn exuberantly fresh if restrained nose offers up a panoply of spice elements to the primarily red berry fruit aromas that display additional breadth with hints of orange pekoe tea, lavender and a whisper of sandalwood. The 2017 Vosne-Romanée Aux Malconsorts 1er Cru is matured in 62% new oak and underwent a slightly later malolactic fermentation than the other cuvées. It has a very pure, detailed bouquet of precise blackberry, briar and crushed stone aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red and black fruit, displaying more grip and backbone than the Les Suchots, and the bold finish perhaps offering less charm. It will certainly require several years in bottle.
93-95 Points
Neal Martin - VinousFirm reduction renders this impossible to fairly assess today. Otherwise there is more size, weight and muscle to the big-bodied and more evidently mineral-driven flavors that are almost painfully intense, all wrapped in a gorgeously long finish that really fans out as it sits on the palate. However, it is pointless to buy this without the express intention to cellar it as it is very structured.
92-95 Points
Burghound.comCathiard's emblematic cuvée, the 2017 Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Aux Malconsorts is also a great success, unfurling in the glass with aromas of cherries, licorice, spices, dark berries, grilled game and an elegant framing of new oak. 2022 Domaine Sylvain Pataille BourgogneBurgundy, FRANCE$140. 00Bottle$1680.00 DozenABV: 12.5%Closure: CorkSylvain Pataille has been instrumental in raising the profile of Marsannay since founding his domaine in 1999. Farming around 17 hectares biodynamically, he works with a remarkable diversity of sites, from old-vine Pinot Noir to rare Aligoté Doré and Pinot Beurot, and is known for sensitive, terroir-driven élevage with a high proportion of whole bunches. His work has been central to the ongoing push for premier cru recognition in Marsannay, and his wines are frequently cited as reference points for the appellation. They combine clarity and lift with impressive depth, proving that Marsannay belongs firmly among the most serious terroirs of the Côte de Nuits.
Described by Rajat Parr as one of the best Bourgogne Rouge in Burgundy, Pataille's first red is a blend of parcels in Marsannay and the Haute Côtes, covering just over one hectare in total. Again, there are plenty of old vines in the mix, including one parcel planted in 1956. Each parcel is vinified separately before blending, with a variety of maceration styles involved. The final blend usually includes approximately 30% whole bunches. Aging is in barrel for one year and the wine is not touched by sulphur until bottling.

Alongside Longeroies and Champ Perdix, the Clos du Roy is one of Marsannay’s largest and most revered vineyards. Some consider it the appellation’s finest terroir, which makes sense when you consider the name: Roy is the ancient French spelling of roi, meaning king. It’s a steep, east-facing slope above the village of Chenôve, on the same line as the Gevrey Premiers Crus to the south. It has lightish red soil, including some sand, over a bed of Comblanchien limestone. When Marsannay finally gets its first Premier Cru (expected 2024), Clos du Roy will likely be at the front of the queue.
Pataille farms a serious 2.25 hectares in the clos, from vines planted in 1952, 1965, 1978 and 2001. As for the winemaking, ‘the king’s vineyard’ gets the royal treatment in the cellar, with 18 months in barrel and six months in tank before being bottled unfiltered. It ferments almost entirely as whole bunches.

A significant proportion of their 13 hectare holdings are in premier and grand cru plots, including the grands crus Clos des Lambrays, Charmes-Chambertin, Corton-Rognet and Mazoyères-Chambertin. Much of these vineyards contain old vines which have been supplemented with newer plantings from massale selections of their strongest vines.
Seventh-generation Romain Taupenot is in charge of winemaking, aided by his sister Virginie. Organic farming has been practiced since 2001, and once harvested grapes are 100% de-stemmed before a cold soak and indigenous fermentation. Oak use is also sympathetic with only 25% new oak used for the village wines and up to 40% for the grand and premier cru. While the wines can carry a healthy degree of richness, they are always balanced by freshness so as to be a pure and faithful representation of their origin.
The Taupenot-Merme family owns 0.85Ha of vines in Mazoyeres-Chambertin grand cru, spread over two plots planted in 1958 and 1959.

This has the kind of reduction that the Burgundians call bourgeon de cassis (literally cassis blossom), which isn't unpleasant so much as it's atypical. The good news is that this type of reduction rarely lasts. There is excellent volume to the relatively fine, and finely detailed, middle weight flavors that possess a sleek muscularity before culminating in a mineral-driven, youthfully austere and sneaky long finish that isn't quite as structured. These two wines offer about the same level of quality but are really quite different in style and character. Drink 2031+.

Allen Meadows - BurghoundThe 2019 Mazoyères-Chambertin Grand Cru has a little more intensity than the Charmes-Chambertin, damp undergrowth, moss, light leafy aromas tincturing the mainly red fruit and developing more and more earthiness with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins and a fine bead of acidity. Taut and fresh with perhaps the most saline finish of all Romain Taupenot’s cuvées this year, it is destined to be a wonderful Mazoyères-Chambertin for sure. Best in show chez Taupenot-Merme. Drink 2024 - 2050.

Neal Martin - VinousMedium deep crimson purple. There is significant weight of fruit here and it stands up a bit further than the Charmes, though again it is a pretty weighty beast, with plenty of power. However, the fruit fills the middle a little better, and retains greater freshness to finish. Long succulent finish.

Moderate reduction renders the nose unreadable today, but I suspect that it will dissipate once the wine is racked for the bottling. Otherwise there is a refined yet solidly powerful mouthfeel to the medium weight flavors that also exude evident minerality on the impressively long and well-balanced finale. This moderately firm effort will also need to add depth, but the potential aging curve of this wine should permit that to occur. Drink 2029+.

Allen Meadows - BurghoundThe 2019 Chambolle-Musigny La Combe d'Orveau 1er Cru has a showy bouquet with raspberry, cranberry, bergamot and tea leaf aromas, perhaps just needing a little more cohesion that should develop during the remainder of its maturation. The palate is medium-bodied with grippy tannins, black fruit laced with graphite leading to a fresh, classically styled finish that stylistically reminds me of Morey than Chambolle. Time will let it make up its mind what it wants to grow up and become, but it will be quite excellent. Drink 2023 - 2037.

Neal Martin - VinousPicked early this year, as the grapes ripened rapidly without getting blocked by hydric stress. Bright purple with a sunny gourmand style, blacker fruit behind but with a fine ripe strawberry note also through the middle. A touch of sucrosity here but a very promising wine.

Pungent aromas of firm reduction and wood make this tough to judge at present. More interesting are the vibrant, well-detailed and sleekly textured middle weight flavors that brim with minerality on the youthfully austere, focused and sneaky long finish that displays good grip. Once again there is ample sauvage character to the underbrush, humus and earth nuanced dark currant and floral-scented nose. The mouthfeel of the big-bodied flavors is quite interesting in that it's at once succulent yet powerful with plenty of punch to the imposingly-scaled, firm and impressively persistent finish. This too is excellent but like the Corton, it's going to require at least 8 to 10 years of patience first and last for decades thereafter. In a word, terrific. Drink 2030+.

Allen Meadows - BurghoundThe 2015 Mazoyeres Chambertin Grand Cru has a very intense bouquet with lifted redcurrant, raspberry, spice box and quite a noticeable marine influence coming through with time. The palate is medium-bodied with tensile tannin. This is very focused, almost athletic in terms of tension and somehow "nimble" in the mouth, no heaviness here (a great attribute in such a warm growing season). This is one of the best Mazoyeres Chambertin that I have tasted.

Neal Martin - Wine Advocate (Dec 2016)Good bright, dark red. Explosive nose combines raspberry, plum, mocha, tobacco, earth and smoky underbrush. Wonderfully silky and sweet but with surprising verve and tension to its red berry, spice and salty mineral flavors. This compellingly rich, deep wine finishes with fully ripe, smooth tannins, outstanding length and terrific spicy lift. I underestimated this wine in late 2016; it now displays exceptional class for Mazoyères--and all the elements to make a great bottle.

An interesting hint of blood orange adds breadth to the layered, cool and nearly as elegant aromas of rose petal, violet, poached plum and anise. There is excellent volume to the muscular and powerful big-bodied flavors that exude a lovely bead of minerality on the compact, moderately austere and beautifully well-balanced finale. Neal Martin - VinousThis is among the most concentrated wines, but it is very well-managed, showing notes of ripe, velvety plum fruit and a hint of saline minerality; there is great purity and nothing rustic. Only one pigeage was done during the entire cuvaison, and while the wine is tannic and firm, it also remains supple and accessible at the same time. Well done. Allen Meadows - BurghoundThe 2020 Volnay Les Caillerets 1er Cru is completely de-stemmed with one-third new oak, cropped at just 12hl/ha due to the old age of vines (90-years) that produces small berries. The bouquet has a stupendous nose, beautifully defined with a mixture of red and black fruit, the most floral of Clerget’s Volnays. The palate is medium-bodied with a plump opening, quite saturated tannins, powerful with just a slight greenness on the finish. I suspect that will be subsumed with time. Tricky to see how this Volnay will evolve, but I will give it the benefit of the doubt. Drink 2025-2045.

Everything is here, making for a voluptuous, complete wine that lacks neither aromatic depth nor structure on the palate. 2022 Dr Mayer Remstal Pinot NoirRemstal, GERMANY$49. 99Bottle$599.88 DozenABV: 13.5%Closure: Diam CorkGerman born Timo Mayer, along with partner Rhonda Ferguson established Mayer in 1999, on the slopes of Mt Toolebewong, between Healesville & Woori Yallock. They produce a small range of hand crafted, single vineyard wines, believing that wines are made in the vineyard and not the winery. All wines are unfined and unfiltered to show the true expression of the vineyard.
Vines are often close-planted, winemaking frequently utilises a generous use of whole bunch but most impressive is Timo's cheerful, amusing nature. Timo showcases his German touch with this small-parcel Pinot Noir from Germany’s Remstal region, a picturesque pocket of Württemberg east of Stuttgart. Made in collaboration with his son River, this wine carries Timo’s signature flair—layered, textural, and unapologetically funky. Darker and richer than his Yarra Valley Pinots, it shows the influence of its cool-climate origins while still offering that whole-bunch spice and structure that defines his style. A striking expression of place, guided by a master of minimal intervention.

Remstal pinot noir made by Rivar Mayer, ‘he’s the man over there now’, says Timo Mayer.
Super high toned perfume, dark cherry, almost Black Forest cake scents, some white pepper, violet floral lift, some mulberry scents, a touch of salted liquorice. The palate is informed by the bouquet for its descriptors, with a tangy, blood orange squirt in there for good measure. Again, quite lifted and high toned in flavour, and lots of white pepper dashed over it. Fine, river pebble tannins in tow. Good. Potent, character-filled pinot noir. Drink 2024-2027.

2020 Domaine Dubreuil-Fontaine Corton-Bressandes Grand CruBurgundy, FRANCE$220. 00Bottle$2640.00 DozenABV: 14.5%Closure: CorkDomaine Dubreuil-Fontaine is one of the true quiet achievers in Burgundy, where they produce outstanding wines from their home in the picturesque hamlet of Pernand-Vergelesses, just north of Beaune. It's perhaps this setting, away from the feverish scouring of wines further north in the Cote de Nuits, that has allowed the domaine to fly under the radar. Certainly it has meant these wines can be found for a fraction of what we're now accustomed to seeing from Burgundy.
The domaine is under the guidance of fifth generation winemaker and owner Christine Gruere-Dubreuil, who has been joined recently by her daughter Clémentine. While they farm vineyards as far south as Volnay and Pommard, much of their production is centred around Pernand, including excellent sites on the Corton grand cru hillside, along with the leading premier cru of Savigny-les-Beaune; Les Vergelesses. All reds are 100% destemmed before spending 12-15 months in barrel, with 35% new wood used on the grand cru wines to around 15% maximum on the remainder of their range.
Among the various vineyards owned by Dubreuil-Fontaine, it's the parcels in the famed Corton grand cru that are cherished most. In addition to their 0.7ha of Chardonnay planted in En Charlemagne, their Pinot Noir is planted in the prime lieu-dits of Clos du Roi at the top of the Corton hill, to its south-east in les Bressandes, and to the south in les Perrières. Clos du Roi is perhaps the most complete of the trio, with glorious weight of fruit married to significant structure. Bressandes meanwhile is for many their favourite, a giving and generous expression yet it retains sufficient character to differentiate itself in the range. Lastly les Perrières has a more free-draining, stony soil tending to a finer expression of Corton, though as with all of these wines it can be very long lived.
Other Reviews....
A more subtle application of wood can be found on the spicier and slightly more elegant nose of both red and dark currant, violet and more discreet earth nuances. The supple and seductively textured flavors possess equally good size and weight though with the intrinsic refinement of a classic Bressandes, all wrapped in a dusty, built-to-age and powerful finish. Lovely stuff and note that while clearly firm, it's not so structured that it couldn't be approached after 5ish years of cellaring. Drink through 2032+.

The 2018 Chambolle-Musigny Village is showing just a little jamminess on the nose, a little confit in style. The palate is well balanced with sappy black fruit laced with white pepper, and gentle grip on the marine-influenced finish. Fine.

Neal Martin - VinousA notably ripe yet fresh nose consists mostly of red currant, raspberry and a floral wisp. The delicious middle weight flavors possess a succulent mid-palate that contrasts somewhat with the intense and raspy, indeed grippy and slightly rustic, finish that is borderline robust. The tannins seem to lack just a bit of phenolic maturity.

This is riper than its 2019 counterpart with its dense array of earth, sauvage and dark berry fruit aromas. There is outstanding richness to the reasonably energetic medium-bodied flavors that also conclude in a rustic and mildly austere finale. This is quite good and recommended but at least some patience required.

2020 Eastern Peake Intrinsic Pinot NoirBallarat, Victoria, AUSTRALIA$54. 99Bottle$659.88 DozenABV: 13%Closure: Diam CorkThe Eastern Peake project was set in motion in 1981 when Trevor Mast (winemaker at Best’s Great Western at the time) placed an ad in the local paper looking for potential sites to grow high-altitude, cool climate Pinot Noir. Dianne Pym & Norman Latta having recently purchased their elevated property in Coghills Creek (25km North-West of Ballarat) answered the call, with the first vines going into the ground in 1983. The Latta’s started producing wine themselves from the site in the mid 90’s, with the guidance and generosity of Trevor. During the 1999 vintage Norm sustained a concussion in the winery leaving their then 15-year-old son, Owen Latta to complete the vintage. After completing his studies and a few stints in other wineries, Owen took over from his parents in 2006.
The vineyard sits on a high plateau, 430m above sea level, and is planted to 12.5 acres of Pinot Noir & Chardonnay with some Syrah coming from the property next door (Walsh Block). Farming has been organic since day one, with a focus on regenerative farming starting in 2006, and a move towards Biodynamics in more recent years.Other Reviews….
Some serious regenerative/organic farming going on at Eastern Peake, a family labour of love that focuses on increasing quality. New labels on the way.
Deep, brooding style with huge lift of fresh, red fruited acidity. Dark cherry, bay leaf, peppery notes, anise, pepper in scents and flavours, a soft spread through the palate with al dente, graphite-laced tannins weaving through and finishing things with building pucker. Tannin is exceptional here. Serious, savoury style. Drink now, but also long cellar time is recommended. Drink 2022 - 2030.

2023 Elanto Vineyard Pinot NoirMornington Peninsula, Victoria, AUSTRALIA$84. 99Bottle$1019.88 DozenCellar: Drink now - 6 Years (2024-2030)ABV: 14%Closure: Diam CorkElanto Vineyard, a 10.6-hectare high-density site on the Mornington Peninsula, is managed by acclaimed winemaker Sandro Mosele and his team. With 11,000 vines per hectare—four times the typical density—yields are limited to 300-500g per vine, enhancing concentration and power in the wines. Organic practices, deep soil cultivation, and volcanic basalt soils rich in iron stone encourage site-specific expression, while the vineyard's southeast aspect and cool sea breezes preserve natural acidity and freshness.
The five Pinot Noir vineyards—Vertex, Ironstone, Chicory, Kilnside, and Basalt—span 6.7 hectares on the upper slopes with basalt-rich soils. The red volcanic soils transition to shallower, stonier terrain mid-slope, producing lower yields, concentrated flavors, and a distinct tannin profile. Each vineyard was harvested and vinified separately, with chilled, destemmed fruit (3-5% whole bunches) undergoing cold soak and natural fermentation in concrete vats. After 25-30 days on skins, the wine was pressed and aged in a mix of new and older French oak barriques for 11 months before blending and bottling.Very deep dark red black tinged core with a dark red hue. Potently alluring aromas of dark cherries, strawberries, violet, dried herbs and subtle anise flood the olfactory senses with earthy rhubarb and spicy cedar notes ensuing. Rich and powerful the seductive palate has a wonderful velvet like feel to it with spicy dark cherry, strawberry and rhubarb flavours expanding across the palate like a peacocks tail, carrying with it ample textural volume. Lending further interest are brambly dried herb characters, forest floor and spicy cedar. Silky smooth tannins finishing very long, gorgeously fruited and supple.
Drink over the next 5-6 years.

Never in a million years would I have picked the vine age given the savouriness, detail and complexity in this wine. Fruit off four-year-old vines. Quite astonishing and yet, the proof is in the glass. Full of heady aromatics – all florals and wood spice with flavours of dark cherry, cherry compote and poached rhubarb. But it’s not at all fruity, as it also comes with a hint of charred radicchio and Italian bitter herbs. There’s a vivacity across the just medium-bodied palate, a little sinewy, yet savoury through and through; best of all, the shapely, fine tannins take charge as it finishes long and convincingly. Made from hand-picked fruit, whole-berries with 3% whole-bunches, fermented in Nico Velo Tulipe concrete vats, pressed off skins after a month and aged a year in mostly light toast François Frères barriques, 30% new. Drink by 2031.

Jane Faulkner – James Halliday’s Australian Wine CompanionThere’s a lot going on with this Pinot Noir but it manages to feel effortless. Seamless is the word; finished is another. Campari-like herbs, roasted nuts, earth, undergrowth and sweet black cherries, the latter deep-set in Pinot Noir terms. There’s an excellent framework of tannin, firm and velvety at once, dry strings splayed out across a mesh made of hazelnuts. This wine became more expansive as it rested in the glass. This is the first Pinot Noir grown and made from this vineyard. It’s an exciting debut, with an even more exciting future. Drink 2024-2030+

A mesh of six clones, dry-grown and planted in front of the property. The most single of single vineyards! Fully destemmed, soaked and fermented under the aegis of natural yeasts, before ageing for 16 months in French oak, 20% new. The result is a pallid ruby, bristling with intent while belying the intensity of flavour that is to come: sour cherry, loganberry and other alpine red fruits. The tannins are attenuated, slaty and thirst-quenching, melding with maritime acidity to pull the melee long. This stands defiant and righteous in the face of so much pinot in this country made with excessive whole-bunches. Drink by 2026.

Seven clones of pinot noir as a starting point. Wild yeast, 100% whole berries, 25% new oak, three different coopers. Poached strawberries, Turkish delight, red cherry and fistfuls of meaty spice. It has personality and difference within a taut, disciplined frame. It gives up plenty, even this young, but everything suggests there are more delights tucked into its flamboyant sleeves. A gleaming hue but quite pale and transparent. A lot of subtlety with just-ripe red cherries, cranberries, florals, warm earth and spices. There's a prettiness, too; it's deceptive, because it's medium-bodied with detail and precision, soft acidity and fine tannins giving it drink-now status. Drink by 2023.

An obsession with a fickle varietal.
Once you experience it, you never forget it. For some wine lovers, Pinot Noir becomes an obsession. While promising one of world's greatest wine experiences, it can also deliver some of the most disappointing. What is it about Pinot that makes it so frustratingly variable? There are known quality factors which offer encouragement to winemakers. Micro-climates have been observed to play an important part in a successful matrix, particularly the diurnal temperature range. Pinot Noir is a little like Riesling, in the sense that it requires warm, but not overly hot days and cool nights to fully develop its maximum flavour potential. Sunshine hours, rainfall, time and rate of precipitation are all important. Countering this is the fact that the same clone will not respond to differences in micro-climate in the same way. Older vines make better wines. Creative and adaptive viticultural management and winemaking are essential. Buy Pinot Noir online. Any questions about our products or shipping?
