Domaine Trapet is Gevrey-Chambertin royalty currently undergoing a serious technical renaissance as the sixth generation, Pierre and Louis, take the lead. Building on a biodynamic pedigree established in 1995, the brothers have recently converted over 55,000 vines to the high-density échalas (single-stake) system, a massive manual undertaking that helps push phenolic maturity while naturally lowering potential alcohols by roughly 0.5%. This focus on transparency continues in the cellar through high whole-cluster fermentations where they painstakingly remove the central stems by hand to capture aromatic lift without the green or astringent tannins typically found in the stalks. By pairing this level of manual precision with modest new oak that rarely exceeds 50% even at the Grand Cru level, Trapet has successfully redefined the local style, favoring elegance and soil-driven clarity over sheer power.

Other Reviews...
A beautifully layered if somewhat reserved nose grudgingly offers up its array of wild dark berries, anise and violet scents. The delicious, concentrated and caressing medium weight flavors possess a lovely sense of refinement on the slightly less powerful mineral-driven finish. This is qualitatively similar to the straight Gevrey villages but the two wines are quite different. Drink through 2029+.

The 2022 Gevrey-Chambertin Ostrea is excellent, mingling aromas of cherries and raspberries with notions of peonies, spices and licorice, followed by a medium to full-bodied, ample and fleshy palate framed by supple tannins and lively acids. It concludes with a precise, saline finish.

The 2022 Gevrey-Chambertin "Ostrea" comes from a single plot from Au Combe du Bas and includes 30-40% whole bunches. It has fine clarity on the nose: brambly red fruit, briar and pressed violets unfolding in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with gentle grip on the entry. It has fine structure, slightly chalky towards the finish, but it should flesh out during the remainder of its élevage. Drink 2026-2045.

A notable intense fresh purple. Now just Clos de Combes, a substantial plot purchased from Domaine Rebourseau - back in 1924! Lots of iron oxide, which I could predict given the blood orange taste in this wine, along with fresh strawberry. Good fruit acid balance, and length. Drink from 2028-2034.

This intriguing wine has a lovely currant fruit aroma with notes of cedar and peppery spice, along with a savoury element that Louis Trapet qualifies as 'blood', which he attributes to the soil's iron content. There is a surprising freshness and harmony to this wine, produced from the parcel they call Clos du Combe in the lieu-dit Combe du Bas just outside the village. The other parcels that had been blended with this (En Dérée and Champerrier) are now used to make the cuvée 1859. Drink 2027-2065.
