Domaine Trapet is Gevrey-Chambertin royalty currently undergoing a serious technical renaissance as the sixth generation, Pierre and Louis, take the lead. Building on a biodynamic pedigree established in 1995, the brothers have recently converted over 55,000 vines to the high-density échalas (single-stake) system, a massive manual undertaking that helps push phenolic maturity while naturally lowering potential alcohols by roughly 0.5%. This focus on transparency continues in the cellar through high whole-cluster fermentations where they painstakingly remove the central stems by hand to capture aromatic lift without the green or astringent tannins typically found in the stalks. By pairing this level of manual precision with modest new oak that rarely exceeds 50% even at the Grand Cru level, Trapet has successfully redefined the local style, favoring elegance and soil-driven clarity over sheer power.

Other Reviews...
A more perfumed and more elegant nose consists mostly of cool red berries and a plethora of spice and floral elements. The notably finer and more precise medium weight flavors are not denser but they are notably more mineral-driven while exhibiting a marked austerity on the impressively long finish. This isn't as powerful though it is still very compact and patience will absolutely be necessary. Drink through 2034+.

Allen Meadows - Burghound

The 2022 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Petite Chapelle is more mineral but also more concentrated than the En Ergot bottling. Bursting with notes of rose petals, raspberries and baking chocolate, it's medium to full-bodied, supple and refined, with an intense core of fruit, lively acids and polished tannins, concluding with a saline finish.

William Kelley - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

The 2022 Gevrey-Chambertin Petite Chapelle 1er Cru has an intense bouquet: blackberry, wild strawberry and white pepper from the 50% whole bunches, later, touches of pencil box. The palate is medium-bodied with crunchy red fruit. It’s sorbet-fresh with veins of blood orange and marmalade. It is quite structured towards the finish and linear, so afford it several years in bottle. Drink 2027-2048.

Concentrated mid purple. A little barrel effect but otherwise a very concentrated red berry fruit. There is currently a strong coconut scent behind from the barrel, which will of course fade into the wine. Still very early in its development, it seems. Very different to En Ergot. Drink from 2030-2037.

Pierre and Louis Trapet remarked that this was their grandmother's favourite wine; the family has long vinified the grapes from this 0.35-hectare parcel separately; it is now trained on stakes and grown without hedging to 'respect the place' according to the brothers. The result is supple, ripe and silky, with expressive pomegranate and cherry fruit aromas touched with rose petals. Still, there is more tannin and grip than the nearby En Ergot. Ideally, one would wait five years before opening this wine. Drink 2030-2065.
