2020 Domaine Sylvain Pataille Marsannay

With a patchwork of vines covering over two hectares, this is arguably Pataille's signature red cuvée. The vineyards are spread across Chenôve, Couchey and Marsannay-la-Côte. All the vines were planted between 1950 and 1980, with the youngest being 40 years old. The wines are all aged in a mixture of used barriques and several old demi-muids (600lt). The final blend includes around 80% whole bunches.

The grapes are a mix of domaine and purchased fruit, vinified with 80% whole bunches. I tasted it from tank and from foudre. Rich deep centre, offering much more weight of fruit than the Bourgogne. This is full racy and exciting with a beautiful glossy dark fruit that is still red rather than black. Excellent length. The foudre version has plumper fruit on the nose, more rounded on the palate though with the whole bunch more evident. Tasted: November 2021.
