2022 Domaine Trapet Pere & Fils Gevrey-Chambertin Cuvee 1859
Domaine Trapet is Gevrey-Chambertin royalty currently undergoing a serious technical renaissance as the sixth generation, Pierre and Louis, take the lead. Building on a biodynamic pedigree established in 1995, the brothers have recently converted over 55,000 vines to the high-density échalas (single-stake) system, a massive manual undertaking that helps push phenolic maturity while naturally lowering potential alcohols by roughly 0.5%. This focus on transparency continues in the cellar through high whole-cluster fermentations where they painstakingly remove the central stems by hand to capture aromatic lift without the green or astringent tannins typically found in the stalks. By pairing this level of manual precision with modest new oak that rarely exceeds 50% even at the Grand Cru level, Trapet has successfully redefined the local style, favoring elegance and soil-driven clarity over sheer power.

Moderate wood surrounds the ripe vaguely liqueur-like aromas of various dark berries, spice, violet and lavender. The vibrant and beautifully textured middleweight flavors, indeed it's almost silky thanks to the fine-grained tannins supporting the lingering finish that firms up noticeably. This is an excellent Gevrey villages with good aging potential. Drink through 2030+.

As readers may remember, the 2022 Gevrey-Chambertin 1859 derives from old vines in lieu-dit Champerrier that the Trapet family acquired in 1859. Unfurling in the glass with aromas of sweet red berries and plums mingled with orange zest, rose petals and spices, it's medium to full-bodied, supple and velvety, with a fleshy core of fruit, lively acids and a suave, layered profile.

The 2022 Gevrey-Chambertin "Cuvée 1859" was blended in the Ostrea until 2019 and is named after the first two parcels owned by the Trapet family. It is 60% echalas and 100% whole bunches. It has heart-warming purity on the nose: Morello cherries and blackcurrant, very precise and focused. The palate is medium-bodied with chalky tannins, fresh and very saline towards the finish. Quite Morey-like in terms of backbone - real length here. Excellent. Drink 2026-2040.

100% whole bunch vinification on fruit from two plots making up half a hectare, with light soil which drains well. Powerful mid crimson purple. A definite peppery aspect here. Very perfumed, roses and peonies, taking over from the initial pepper. But the white spice returns at the finish. It will take time for the sweet fruit to triumph over the drier finish, which it will. Drink from 2029-2035.
