2022 Domaine Sylvain Pataille Bourgogne
Sylvain Pataille has been instrumental in raising the profile of Marsannay since founding his domaine in 1999. Farming around 17 hectares biodynamically, he works with a remarkable diversity of sites, from old-vine Pinot Noir to rare Aligoté Doré and Pinot Beurot, and is known for sensitive, terroir-driven élevage with a high proportion of whole bunches. His work has been central to the ongoing push for premier cru recognition in Marsannay, and his wines are frequently cited as reference points for the appellation. They combine clarity and lift with impressive depth, proving that Marsannay belongs firmly among the most serious terroirs of the Côte de Nuits.
Described by Rajat Parr as one of the best Bourgogne Rouge in Burgundy, Pataille's first red is a blend of parcels in Marsannay and the Haute Côtes, covering just over one hectare in total. Again, there are plenty of old vines in the mix, including one parcel planted in 1956. Each parcel is vinified separately before blending, with a variety of maceration styles involved. The final blend usually includes approximately 30% whole bunches. Aging is in barrel for one year and the wine is not touched by sulphur until bottling.
Other Reviews....
The 2022 Bourgogne Rouge has a delineated and attractive bouquet, a little backward initially but opening with brambly red fruit and forest floor scents. The palate has a real "crunch" to it, more of a textural Pinot than one with obvious fruit flavors. Delicious. Drink 2025-2028.

Just bottled. Mid crimson. An energetic pure pinot fruit nose, not ethereal but not massive, just about the fruit. The finish is made a little more severe by the recent bottling but this is a hugely satisfying crunchy fruit. Persistent for this level. Lovely. Drink from 2025-2028.
