Pinot Noir

While we continue to expand our collection of Burgundies, more and more new-world winemakers are coming to terms with this challenging variety. Australians have identified Geelong, the Yarra Valley and the Mornington Peninsula in Victoria as suited to premium Pinot Noir. More recently, Tasmania has shot up the ranks. Mount Mary, Farr Rising and Tolpuddle are names to seek out. New Zealand is also producing some compelling, full bodied wines. Look for regions like Martinborough, Marlborough and Central Otago.

This sits in the right place. It shows off lovely varietal aromas and flavours as much as the region. It's juicy and bright, works off a medium-bodied frame full of cherries and spiced strawberries. Tannins are soft and so too the acidity. A pinot for today. Drink by 2026.

The 2022 growing season at Curly Flat followed the cool climate trend of the previous two years, with the resulting wines dispalying fragrant aroma, nuanced depth, and balanced texture, all brought together by fresh mineral acidity. The 2022 Estate Pinot Noir is produced from eleven distinct parcels, each representing different aspects, clones, and soils. These parcels were carefully managed to maximize site expression, with indigenous yeasts used for fermentation and varying amounts of whole bunch, post-ferment skin contact, and oak treatment tailored to each lot. Expect fragrant spices and red fruit with darker fruits and savory complexities. After 16 months of maturation, the final blend includes 6% whole bunch and 17% new oak, and was bottled without filtration.

At first, this is gently aromatic with flavours of cherry compote, baked rhubarb and lots of chinotto, then, wham! A mouthful of tannins comes crashing through, setting up a more serious proposition. Yet the palate stays in mid-weight territory, as this is a more austere style with a light smattering of oak spice/char and very tangy acidity to close. Needs rich food as a match. Drink 2024 - 2032.

I tasted the three Curly Flat 2022 Pinot Noirs masked and for this one I wrote: The most complete of the three. Given that they’re all excellent quality, that may be all that you need to know. I like the stringiness of this, the tension, the fruit, the length. It’s real pinot. It feels as though it’s desperate to rush forward but it holds itself back until it gets to the finish, where it runs. It has a minerally aspect, a sour ripeness, a thread of woodsmoke, a garni of herbs. It will cellar beautifully. It’s cool, ripe, savoury, seamless and long. Drink 2026 - 2033+

This is very much the sum of its parts with fruit cherry-picked across various estate blocks. And now that the word cherry has popped up, plenty in this, red and morello in particular. It has some whole-bunch punch both aromatically and on the palate, zesty and tangy with perky acidity a feature of this vintage. Plenty of tannins work across the medium-bodied palate and there's a lipsmacking, moreish finish. Drink 2023 - 2035.

Most of the better Macedon Ranges pinot noirs are ever-so surly in their youth. This one too.
The fruit here is backward, in a good way. It tastes of red cherry and plum with an earthen, sweet-sour edge, though bunches of twig, juniper and general herb notes are at play too, if in an integrated way. Complexity, it certainly has covered. There’s excellent tannin here, a solid-if-fine-grained frame, though it’s not delivered at the expense of flow. This moves along in a brooding, thoughtful way, as if concerned about its future, not that it needs to be. Everything, for this wine, in time, will be just fine. Drink 2026 - 2033+

There’s an intensity and depth to Curly Flat’s pinots of late and as with this, never going overboard. It’s deep, complex and earthy with damp undergrowth alongside cherries, blood orange and Angostura bitters, plus savoury oak spice. Lots of tannin, but well placed across its more medium-bodied palate and with spritely acidity, it feels effortless to the end. Drink by 2030.

This wine takes a long time to come around in the glass but then, as young wines, that’s often the case with Macedon Pinot Noir. Bindi and Epis are noted slow-evolvers and I suspect that Curly Flat is headed more that way too.
The tannin structure of this wine and the overall reach through the finish is elite. It has ample flavour, in varietal terms, but structure is what this wine is all about. It mixes red cherry with satsuma plum, cedar wood with green-ish garden herbs, and while it has a bit of grunt it’s not heavy; it trips along in its own certain way. Hold onto it; don’t rush in; it’s on its way to a lovely place. Drink 2024 - 2031+

Matured for 16 months in French oak (22% new) with 22% whole bunch fruit included in the ferment. Deep dark red black tinged colour displaying excellent depth with a dark red purple hue. Nosing offers up a fragrant bouquet of delicate violets, dark cherries, strawberries and hints of anise which mix with spicy vanillin cedar, dried herb and forest floor notes. Light to medium weight the palate possesses richness, flesh and power delivering a combination of dark cherry and strawberry fruits which are supple on entry and expansive. Notions of anise, forest floor, spicy cedar and subtle dried herbs then chime in on the back half. Showing an underlying sturdiness are fine grained tannins. Concludes long and polished.

Curly Flat has made its name on powerfully-built examples of the variety, fruit often matched step-by-step by oak. There’s cedary oak here but it’s been dialled back while, at the same time, tannin has been dialled up. This wine has fruit but it also has a great emphasis on structure. It’s not chunky, it’s chalky and dry, effectively mineral, almost quartz-like. It brings gravitas to the Curly Flat equation. I looked at this wine over the course of 24 hours and every time I did my score on it went up. Drink 2022-2029+

An impressive 2019 from Curly Flat with a spectrum of ripe red and dark-cherry aromas and trademark, sappy and spicy notes, too. It’s from the estate’s 1992 planting, aka its oldest vines. It was fermented wild before going into 27% new oak.
This takes the tannin up another notch; I was bowled over by this, it’s a terrific wine. Meaty, smoky, plum-shot, silken, cedar-laced. But bold with tannin. Muscular in a nuanced way. The ‘standard’ Curly Flat pinot noir grew on me over the hours; this one hit me with its quality immediately. You can see the grains in this and I mean that as a positive; it’s like an LP, analog, grainy, its flavours told in grooves. Drink 2022 - 2028+

From the coolest site on the Curly Flat estate. 22-year-old vines. No new oak.
It’s clearly the most delicate and arguably the most detailed of Curly Flat’s 2019 pinot noir releases. It throws fistfuls of spice into the mix, along with herbs, along with a certain grit to the tannin. This is a lacy pinot noir, perfumed, refreshing, not without presence, blessed by finesse. It’s the most approachable of the 2019s but it has all the components to age. The length of the finish is of note. Drink 2022 - 2026+

Fruit comes off vineyards on the coolest, western blocks. 115 and 144 clones, 17% whole bunches in the wild ferment and aged in used French oak for 16 months. There's a prettiness, an alluring fragrance of rose petals that gives way to more obvious cherry nuances. It's just shy of full bodied, with textural, fine-grained tannins, crunchy acidity and a moreish element. Compelling wine. Drink by 2033.

Showing excellent depth this wine has a deep dark red core with black tinged edges and a dark red hue. Perfumed aromatics of violets, dark cherries and strawberries show terrific intensity. Forest floor, fragrant fresh herb notes, a subtle meatiness and spicy cedar ensues. Rich, expansive and supple in its feel, generous red to dark cherry and strawberry fruits fan out across the palate like peacocks tail generating tremendous power. A subtle meatiness, elements of forest floor, fresh herbs and spicy cedar sit in the background to provide greater complexity. Good freshness with a fine matrix of tannins perfectly integrated with the fruit. Serious depth with a long engaging finish.

I believe this is the first vintage with Matt Harrop at the controls. I’m likely not recognized as the authority on Pinot Noir at The Wine Front, but I’ll do my best for you.
Dried rose perfume in with some fresh mint, deep raspberry flavour, a little almond and vanilla, plus some spice. It’s ripe, but not overly so, with cool acidity, a dusting of graphite tannin, and a long biscuity finish. It’s generous in style, but keeps itself trim. I’m particularly tickled by the quality of tannin here. Excellent. Drink 2020-2028+

This is a watershed for this producer with such well-assembled complexity, well-guarded purity and the kind of bright, vibrant tannin that is rarely seen outside Burgundy. Intense aromas of blood orange, pomegranate, red cherry, boldly spicy oak and a sapid, reductive edge. Lot of energy here. The palate has rich red and dark-cherry flavor with crisply defined tannins that carry long and refreshed into the finish with assertive acidity. Crunchy red-fruit finish. Give this a little more time to settle. Try from 2023. Screw cap.

I’m quite particular about Pinot Noir. There’s styles I very much like, and those that I don’t but may still rate highly, where appropriate. Anyway, here’s a style I do like, and I’d expect that it will have broad appeal too. As an aside, still clearing a bit of a cold, so I’m perhaps not quite at my best. Codral makes me do, and say, strange things.
The main thing I like here, is that there’s an earthy/mineral thing going on that sets it apart from the pack. Cherry, strawberry, spice, mint, autumnal, yet still bright with cranberry acidity, wonderful graphite tannin, a coolness and composure without compromising this sort of salt-of-the-earth integrity thingy. Finish is pure and mineral infused, with insistent tannin pushing it long. Fair to say I think this is very good, with more to come. Drink 2020-2032+

The first reserve release from the D.M.L. crew. It’s from a single Mornington Peninsula vineyard, and it’s a barrel selection from there (the best three).
It’s a complete wine. It’s so beautifully ripened that it’s difficult to see where the fruit ends and the savouriness begins, so easily does each flow into and through the other. Strawberries and herbs, cedarwood and undergrowth, with perhaps a slight dip into plum. There’s a minerally, smoky, graphite-like aspect to the tannin, which itself is both firm and sheeted, like a hotel bed, everything drilled precisely into place. This is an Australian Pinot Noir that will prove immensely age worthy; everything here speaks of excellence. Drink 2026 - 2035+.

I texted Anth D’Anna, Franco D’Anna, and Sam Middleton just now, asking which was the best DML Pinot in 2021. Mornington or Yarra? Anth says ‘Mornington’, Franco says ‘Mornington’, Sam says ‘double emoji laughing’ and then ‘probably Mornington’. I don’t have Jordan Lewis’ mobile number, so I asked him on Instagram, ‘It seems to be Mornington, though I think the Yarra will age better’. Wise words.
Strawberry, a little spice, almond, kind of pretty, with a flicker of mint and light cedar oak. It’s light to medium-bodied, delicate and lacy, a subtle hazelnut flavour, fine grained emery board tannin, very fresh, again the spiced strawberry and a minty blood orange, but pure finish of excellent length. Wax capped bottles, and you’d expect that the D’Anna brothers are experts when it comes to waxing. Anyway, I hate DIAM corks, more in a wine writer capacity as much as anything, because so often you can’t get the cork back into the bottle.
So fine and pretty. All strawberries and dried flower perfume, a dash of sweet spice, subtle stony earthiness too. Light bodied, fresh and delicate, red cherry and ripe strawberry, fine emery tannin, maybe some fragrant basil, and a gentle but insistent drag of fine dusty tannin on a long cool finish. Boasting superb richness, power and a supple feel, this is superb expression of Tassie Pinot that draws comparisons with top end Burgundy.

The crown jewel in the Dalrymple collection, the Mt. Lord Vineyard is located on a small, angular and varied landscape that lays on the protected easterly slope of the Pontos Hills. The vineyard rows run up the hillside from 134m to 156m above sea level, precariously positioned between a rock ledge below and steep barren hillside above.
The fruit was handpicked with a small amount of the bunches placed directly into the ferment. Maturation took place in French oak barriques (30% new) for a period of 10 months.

Deep dark red core with black tinged edges and a dark red hue. Intense spicy dark cherry, rhubarb, dried herb and bramble scents sail through the nostrils with some forest floor, subtle strawberry and cedar notes also making an appearance. Rich, concentrated and supple in its flow across the palate, it shows fabulous power and expansive volume. Dark cherry, strawberry and rhubarb flavours infused with dried herbs are further complexed by notions of brambly cedar, forest floor and spice. Velvety tannins seamlessly integrate into the very long, complex and highly savoury conclusion.
Drink over the next 6-8 years.

A new offering from Dalrymple from the Mt Lord vineyard, purchased by Hill-Smith Family Vineyards in 2012. Bright ruby with lifted aromas of red cherry, red plum and raspberry pip. Notes of fine spice suffuse through the wine with hints of struck flint, raspberry coulis, powdered stone, wildflowers, gentle game tones and a distant whiff of leaf litter. Fine, lacy acidity provides energy and drive. Fruit ripe and pure, stretched in a canvas of fine, kinetic tannin, supple and finely detailed as it retreats. Drink by 2036.

I was fortunate to taste the only sample of this wine in the UK, and it is one of the most remarkable Tassie wines of my life.  Take all of the purity and expression we know and love from Tasmanian elite Pinot Noir, then concentrate it just a touch.  Darken the fruit, add a hint more muscle, spice and shantung silk textural mystery, along with a whisper of magical whole bunches and some rhapsodic French oak and the picture is complete.  Pete Caldwell captured the essence of this site in Polaroid perfection. Then, he made the near-impossible happen by transferring all of the energy and greatness of this fruit without squandering a drop of potential into the bottle.  I implore the lever-pullers at Hill-Smith Family Estate’s HQ to heave a few cases of this wine onto the next Dalrymple boat to the UK.  If this wine appeared next to various Clos de Vougeots, Bonnes-Mares and Chambertins this week, it would bring the house down!  Drink 2026 – 2035

Fruit was sourced from Dalrymple’s own vineyards at Pipers River and Coal River Valley along with growers in Swansea and Ouse. Utilising a variety of blocks, different clones and slightly different aspects each of these sites made its own unique contribution to the final blend. The cooler northern maritime location at Pipers River produces Pinot Noir that is focused and structured, while the Coal River Valley in the south adds texture and softness to the mid-palate. Five to twenty five percent whole bunches were included depending on the site and maturation took place in French oak barriques (20% new) for a period of 9 months.
Dark red core with black toned edges and a red hue. Wonderfully perfumed nose with aromas of violet, red to dark cherries, strawberries and subtle anise sailing out of the glass followed by notions of spicy cedar, forest floor and fresh herbs. Light, fresh and supple in its feel, delicious red cherry, strawberry and delicate rhubarb flavours move across the palate with forest floor, fresh herbs and spicy cedar lingering underneath. Polished tannins and bright acidity with the elegant, red fruited finish showing a savoury edge.

There is a lovely meaty edge to this year's Coal River Valley release. The fruits lie in the blueberry and red cherry spectrum with plenty of underlying exotic spice, poached rhubarb, pomegranate, amaro herbs, citrus blossom and a whiff of game. But it's that meaty, umami stuff on the palate that grabs you, swelling at first, some sour cherry sweeping in, tannins silty fine and a lacy mineral acid presence provides the pulse. Lovely. Rich dark cherry, strawberry and rhubarb fruits make a supple entrance onto the palate with notions of dried clove, forest floor, pencilly cedar and spice lending complexity through the back half. The Coal River is one of my favourite places for pinot noir in Tasmania. There's a beautiful fragrance to this wine, somewhere between roses and violets, holding from the first moment of its captivating bouquet to the last trace of its enduring finish. Pitch-perfect red cherries run in tandem, intricately upheld by fine, mineral tannins. A triumph. Drink by 2032.

A cornucopia of floral elements jumps from the glass to complement the essence of wild red cherry scents. The middle weight flavors are gorgeously textured and are a lovely combination of finesse, punch and minerality, all wrapped in a firm, serious and balanced finale. This is also exuberantly floral in character with its pretty nose of various red berries, forest floor and a whiff of tea. The mouthfeel of the middle weight flavors is not as dense or imposing though it is notably finer with focused power suffusing the compact, youthfully austere and equally built-to-age finale. A distinctly cool nose is also quite spicy with its array of red currant, cherry and plum. Here too there is a whiff of herbal tea to be found on the fresh red berry scents that are cut with hints of the sauvage. Here too there is an attractive texture to the medium-bodied flavors that exude evident minerality on the firmer, more complex and more persistent finale. Drink 2027+.

A relatively airy and cool nose freely offers up notes of various red berries, earth and a floral top note. The sleek and relatively refined middle weight flavors contrast somewhat with the youthfully austere and mildly rustic finale that exhibits slightly better depth and persistence on the more structured finale. This is quite a good Nuits villages and worth a look. Drink 2029+.

Named in honour of David’s son, Louis-Auguste, this Hautes Cotes de Nuits comes from a high altitude vineyard, and combined with some of the domaine’s oldest vines (over 55 years in age) tends to produce a wine of concentration, especially in warm vintages.

Deep dark red colour with black tinged edges and a dark red hue. Perfumed violet top notes are interwoven with sour to red cherry, winter strawberry, fresh clove, delicate earth and spicy cedar notes. Light to mid weight with a vibrant yet supple feel, the palate is blessed with a savoury flavour profile of sour to red cherry and winter strawberry fruits gently infused with clove over a back drop of subtle cedar, earth and spice. Lively finish with beautifully integrated tannins and a very refined aftertaste.
Drink over the next 5-6 years.

An obsession with a fickle varietal.

Once you experience it, you never forget it. For some wine lovers, Pinot Noir becomes an obsession. While promising one of world's greatest wine experiences, it can also deliver some of the most disappointing. What is it about Pinot that makes it so frustratingly variable? There are known quality factors which offer encouragement to winemakers. Micro-climates have been observed to play an important part in a successful matrix, particularly the diurnal temperature range. Pinot Noir is a little like Riesling, in the sense that it requires warm, but not overly hot days and cool nights to fully develop its maximum flavour potential. Sunshine hours, rainfall, time and rate of precipitation are all important. Countering this is the fact that the same clone will not respond to differences in micro-climate in the same way. Older vines make better wines. Creative and adaptive viticultural management and winemaking are essential. Buy Pinot Noir online. Any questions about our products or shipping?
