While we continue to expand our collection of Burgundies, more and more new-world winemakers are coming to terms with this challenging variety. Australians have identified Geelong, the Yarra Valley and the Mornington Peninsula in Victoria as suited to premium Pinot Noir. More recently, Tasmania has shot up the ranks. Mount Mary, Farr Rising and Tolpuddle are names to seek out. New Zealand is also producing some compelling, full bodied wines. Look for regions like Martinborough, Marlborough and Central Otago. 2017 Charles Van Canneyt Gevrey ChambertinBurgundy, FRANCE$170. 00Bottle$2040.00 DozenCellar: 6 - 8 Years (2026-2028)ABV: 13.7%Closure: CorkCharles Van Canneyt is the current winemaker at the iconic Domaine Hudelot-Noellat in Vougeot, but he also produces wine under his own label. Using his extensive contacts with the finest growers in Burgundy, Charles sources grapes from some of the top plots in the area, and makes the wines at a separate facility in Beaune. Charles is aiming for a similar purity and terroir focus as those wines of Hudelot-Noellat, and as such has minimal use of new oak each year.
Matured in French oak for 12 months, 20% of which was new. Very deep dark red colour with black tinged edges and a dark red hue. Aromas of violets, red and dark cherries and strawberries are complexed by light scorched earth, dusty cedar and spice. Light to medium bodied with a meaty feel, the palate sports dark cherry and strawberry fruits over a back drop of earth, dried meats and spicy cedar. Grainy, slightly firm tannins provide the framework. Long savoury red fruited aftertaste tinged with hints of earth.
Cellar 6-8 years.

The 2017 Gevrey-Chambertin is laced with the essence of rose petal, mint, purplish fruit and lavender. Weightless on the palate and beautifully perfumed, the 2017 offers terrific delineation and energy throughout, with a discreet touch of oak that frames the finish. The 2017 is an especially refined village wine with much to recommend it. This is really quite lovely.

Central Otago pinot noir from various blocks of the Winter Vineyard.
I tasted this among a range of pinot noirs and it stood out head and shoulders. You’re only as good as your competition of course but the truth is that the quality here sits firmly and squarely. It’s beautifully spiced and the cut of tannin is noteworthy. I always like it when structure and spice stand out before fruit, though there’s nothing underpowered about the latter. It’s a boysenberried pinot with smoke notes and florals. There’s both a ripeness and a juiciness to the palate but there’s also an emphasis on dryness. It’s a most impressive wine. Drink 2020-2027.

From a 1.52ha vineyard near the village facing east and south. The wine ferments for two weeks with a modest inclusion of whole clusters prior to ageing in cask (20% new). 2024 Chatto Lutruwita Pinot NoirTasmania, AUSTRALIA$47. 99Bottle$575.88 DozenABV: 14%Closure: StelvinEstablished in 2000 by Jim and Daisy Chatto, Chatto Wines is dedicated exclusively to Pinot Noir. With over two decades of experience and numerous accolades—including Gourmet Traveller Wine’s Winemaker of the Year—Jim Chatto crafts small-batch, site-expressive wines. The home vineyard in the Huon Valley is planted to eight Pinot clones, producing elegant, intensely flavoured wines in tiny quantities. The 2024 vintage followed Tasmania’s driest summer on record, delivering clean, concentrated fruit. These are structured, expressive Pinots with immediate appeal and excellent cellaring potential.
Lutruwita, named after the palawa kani word for Tasmania, brings together fruit from across six key sub-regions: Huon Valley (26%), Derwent Valley (26%), Coal Valley (16%), Pipers River (12%), Tamar Valley (10%) and the East Coast (10%). Handpicked and fermented on skins for ten days with gentle plunging, it captures the essence of Tasmanian Pinot—bright, perfumed and elegant, with fine structure and wonderful purity of length.

Medium-ruby in the glass. The '24 Lutruwita comes across a little finer on the aromatic front than the previous release. Red cherry and raspberry fruit notes meld with hints of blood orange, medina spice, a wisp of struck-flint reduction, blossom, roast duck, crushed stone, pomegranate and dried cranberry. As is the Chatto style, there is all the space and detail you could wish for with a stony composure, pure, flighty fruit, a fine mineral line and a gentle tug of silty tannin on the exit. Drink 2025-2040.

Single-site pinot noir (clone 114) from the Bird vineyard in Pipers River. Bright ruby in the glass with a taut aromatic profile of red cherry, redcurrant and raspberry. These fruit tones are undercut with hints of undergrowth, exotic spice, shiitake broth, smoked meats, fennel tops, gentle meadow herbs and some distant wood spice. The fruit, too, is stretched on a minerally canvas. The tannins, pumice fine, gather gravity as the wine progresses across the palate, but lie nicely sympatico with the fruit. It's a delicate, nuanced style and one with plenty of cellaring upside. Drink 2025-2040.

Dave Brookes - James Halliday's Australian Wine CompanionClone 114 planted in 1998.
The fruit here has a sweet edge but then it’s also herbal, sinewy and long. It’s classically structured, well flavoured and, even as a young wine, inherently complex. Woodsy spice notes – crushed – a lavender note, plenty of herbs and plenty of black cherry, with a dark cedar, smoked tobacco-like character through the finish. Excellent Pinot Noir. Will mature beautifully. Drink 2026 - 2033+

First the bad news. Bushfires meant no harvest from the Isle, Huon Valley and Seven Inch sites. The good news, Chatto sourced fruit from the Tamar Valley and Pipers River resulting in two single vineyard wines and this terrific blend. Plenty of Chinese five-spice and meaty, roast beetroot reduction infused into the just-ripe red cherry fruit. While medium-bodied, it's tight with pulsing acidity and rather textural tannins the final impression quite ethereal. Drink by 2030.

The superb 2016 Clos de Tart Grand Cru confirms the promise it showed from barrel, unfurling in the glass with a striking bouquet of raspberries, rose petals, blood orange, black tea, spices and smoked meats. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, pure and ample, with a deep core of vibrant, searingly intense fruit that entirely cloaks its structuring chassis of satiny tannin, concluding with a long and captivatingly floral finish. More elegant and transparent than the richer and fleshier 2015, this is an exceptional vintage for Clos de Tart. That there are fully 27,000 bottles makes this one of Burgundy's rare confluence of quality and quantity.

William Kelley - The Wine AdvocateThe 2016 Clos de Tart Grand Cru, cropped at 35hl/ha, is the first year farmed biodynamically. This was completely breathtaking in barrel, and now, in bottle, nothing has changed in that respect. It has an ineffably complex bouquet, not as intense as it showed in barrel yet extremely deep and cerebral, black fruit mingling with forest floor, crushed stone and a touch of sea spray. The palate is perfectly balanced with a deceivingly understated entry, before a wave of black and red fruit crashes over the senses. It is framed by supremely fine tannin, the intensity building toward a crescendo as it fans out. The aftertaste is unbelievably long, remaining in the mouth 60 seconds after the wine has departed. The best ever - simple as that. Tasted at Clos de Tart.

Neal Martin - VinousA wonderfully fresh, bright and layered nose reflects notes of cool red and black cherry, plum, violet, lavender, herbal tea, earth and a subtle, but not invisible, touch of wood. There is notably more volume and mid-palate concentration to the relatively supple medium weight plus flavors that tighten up noticeably on the dusty, balanced and exquisitely persistent finish where a hint of bitter cherry pit surfaces. This moderately powerful effort is shaped by dense but fine tannins and is a wine that should amply repay extended cellaring.

A 50-50 blend of fruit from Northburn and Bannockburn (Cloudy Bay leases a portion of the Calvert Vineyard), the 2015 Te Wahi Pinot Noir is a full-bodied, plummy wine. It shows some pretty florals on the nose, but the palate is chocolaty and rich, offering hints of cola and dark-skinned plums. It's powerful and plush, with a velvety texture and lingering finish, almost verging on Californian (Russian River Valley?) in style.91 points

Made from rows 55 to 77 from the 3.2ha, south-facing D block planted with MV6 between 1995 and 1998. Whole bunches (25%) and matured in 70% new oak. The prettiest and most delicate of Clyde Park's 2022 single-block wines. Aromas of satsuma plums, dark cherries, rose petals, incense and some potpouri notes. Sweetly fruited and finely tuned on the palate, there's a delicacy that's appealing. The tannins are silky and long and while this can be enjoyed in its youth, this has the potential to improve over the next six to eight years. Drink: 2023-2030.

This is the first standalone release from a vineyard planted in 2011, with a density of just under 7000 vines per hectare. It comprises various clones, including 777, Q390-02, Pommard, Able, 115, and MV6. In this vintage, 5% whole bunch and 35% new oak were used. It offers a richer expression compared to the 'Original Black,' emphasizing dark fruits like cherry and plum. The wine has a remarkable density complemented by a touch of spice and savory details. The palate showcases a delicate core with a smooth flow of fruits.Other Reviews....
This is a first release from this pocket of Cobaw Ridge’s higher density plantings, as the name says. Sees 25% new oak.
A strange mix of brooding, black fruited feel and this ethereal lift and purity. Has me in a spin, and delighted. Moreish red of dark cherry scents, sarsaparilla, terracotta, slightly coconut thing going on, curiously. Very, very satisfying wine here is the message. Lots of flavour, lots of pizzazz. Feels bolder in a way, but delivers so much character and a kind of eyes rolled back in head pleasure. What a treat. Drink 2023 - 2032.

From the 1995 plantings on the Cobaw Ridge, biodynamic farmed estate. Sees 25% new oak in seasoning. An amazing place for vineyards, way up there at Cobaw.
Serious pinot noir here. Has a strong currency in perfume of rich, cherry fruit characters, cinnamon spice, a bit of eucalyptus, pleasingly so, caraway seed in there, some maraschino. Good sniffs. Serious structure in the palate, ribbons of really lacy, fine, grainy tannin, superb and long here. More sour/black cherry fruit character to taste, some minty/sage leaf herbal notes too, faintly barnyard and forest floor notes in there too. Brooding in a way too. Delights. Drink 2023 - 2035.

A very minty release here, near dominating the bouquet and palate, so strap in for that. Red cherry too, raspberry, some sooty spices and autumnal notes, touch of game meat if not a bit more. Yes like everyone else poor weather during flowering for the Chardonnay and Pinot. The flip side was the Syrah missed the bad weather and flowed normally. Not so silly to have earlier and late varieties in the vineyard! Last time it was that bad was 1990 but bingo ‘91 was a huge crop! Fingers crossed for this year. Poetry from Alan Cooper of Cobaw Ridge. Reads like nouveau Ogden Nash.
This is a delightful wine, savoury and minty herbal, sour cherry led fruit flavours with some raspberry, white strawberry and a splash of kirsch in the mix. While the wine feels loose knit a a sheath of tannin tightens as the wine rolls over the palate, finishing long yet lightly chewy and very good. It’s fragrant, energetic, has that intangible sense of nourishment that some great, unadorned wines have. It feels unique, idiosyncratic in the best sense; very Cobaw Ridge. Easy pleasure, fine detail, a serious pinot with lift and presence. Drink 2021 - 2028.

Pure and effortless, gliding, graceful pinot noir of fine boned nature and freshness. Tart cherry notes, pomegranate characters, crushed granite minerally characters, a little undergrowth and dried leaves in the mix.
