Pinot Noir

While we continue to expand our collection of Burgundies, more and more new-world winemakers are coming to terms with this challenging variety. Australians have identified Geelong, the Yarra Valley and the Mornington Peninsula in Victoria as suited to premium Pinot Noir. More recently, Tasmania has shot up the ranks. Mount Mary, Farr Rising and Tolpuddle are names to seek out. New Zealand is also producing some compelling, full bodied wines. Look for regions like Martinborough, Marlborough and Central Otago.

Another excellent example of the kind of fine-boned and sophisticated expression of pinot noir that Clyde Park celebrates. Forest, wild berries, wood smoke and undergrowth aromas provide insight into what follows. Round and silky in tannins across the palate, effortlessly subtle but with a solid core of flavour. A still-waters-run-deep kind of wine. Drink 2033.

Situated 610 meters above sea level and overseeing Central Victoria, the Cobaw Ridge vines thrive in the granite-rich mountain soil, working hard to produce well-balanced grapes. This unique site's challenges, combined with the Cooper's dedication to sustainable and natural practices, result in wines that truly reflect their origin and time. No additives, fining, filtration, or stabilization are applied, except for minimal sulphites before bottling.
This is the first standalone release from a vineyard planted in 2011, with a density of just under 7000 vines per hectare. It comprises various clones, including 777, Q390-02, Pommard, Able, 115, and MV6. In this vintage, 5% whole bunch and 35% new oak were used. It offers a richer expression compared to the 'Original Black,' emphasizing dark fruits like cherry and plum. The wine has a remarkable density complemented by a touch of spice and savory details. The palate showcases a delicate core with a smooth flow of fruits.

This is a first release from this pocket of Cobaw Ridge’s higher density plantings, as the name says. Sees 25% new oak.
A strange mix of brooding, black fruited feel and this ethereal lift and purity. Has me in a spin, and delighted. Moreish red of dark cherry scents, sarsaparilla, terracotta, slightly coconut thing going on, curiously. Very, very satisfying wine here is the message. Lots of flavour, lots of pizzazz. Feels bolder in a way, but delivers so much character and a kind of eyes rolled back in head pleasure. What a treat. Drink 2023 - 2032.

From the 1995 plantings on the Cobaw Ridge, biodynamic farmed estate. Sees 25% new oak in seasoning. An amazing place for vineyards, way up there at Cobaw.
Serious pinot noir here. Has a strong currency in perfume of rich, cherry fruit characters, cinnamon spice, a bit of eucalyptus, pleasingly so, caraway seed in there, some maraschino. Good sniffs. Serious structure in the palate, ribbons of really lacy, fine, grainy tannin, superb and long here. More sour/black cherry fruit character to taste, some minty/sage leaf herbal notes too, faintly barnyard and forest floor notes in there too. Brooding in a way too. Delights. Drink 2023 - 2035.

A very minty release here, near dominating the bouquet and palate, so strap in for that. Red cherry too, raspberry, some sooty spices and autumnal notes, touch of game meat if not a bit more. Lots to like. Supple palate, fine boned, cool acidity and again a meaty finish. Love the texture, love the freshness. The overt mint thing does distract. Go on the journey, let’s say. Yes like everyone else poor weather during flowering for the Chardonnay and Pinot. The flip side was the Syrah missed the bad weather and flowed normally. Not so silly to have earlier and late varieties in the vineyard! Last time it was that bad was 1990 but bingo ‘91 was a huge crop! Fingers crossed for this year. Poetry from Alan Cooper of Cobaw Ridge. Reads like nouveau Ogden Nash.
This is a delightful wine, savoury and minty herbal, sour cherry led fruit flavours with some raspberry, white strawberry and a splash of kirsch in the mix. While the wine feels loose knit a a sheath of tannin tightens as the wine rolls over the palate, finishing long yet lightly chewy and very good. It’s fragrant, energetic, has that intangible sense of nourishment that some great, unadorned wines have. It feels unique, idiosyncratic in the best sense; very Cobaw Ridge. Easy pleasure, fine detail, a serious pinot with lift and presence. Drink 2021 - 2028.

While James Halliday no longer lives in the house he built at the winery, his picture-perfect vineyard photos grace the labels, and his legacy here will always live on. Sourced solely from Block G, planted in 1988, this is another impressive and, no doubt, long-lived Reserve Pinot. Dark fruits, violets and spices like nutmeg and clove pervade the nose while the palate is concentrated without being heavy. Firm, yet supple and persistent tannins round out a wine that will still be providing pleasure 10–20 years from now. Drink by 2038.

The Te Muna Road vineyard, sited 7km from Martinborough town, is planted on an ancient dried riverbed of stony clay soils, and fruit for this wine is sourced from a higher terrace than the parcel-selection Aroha. The winemaking – by Julian Grounds – is similar; however, this sees more (34%) whole-bunch fruit and less (27%) new oak. Anne Krebiehl MW: Juicy, flowing, with dense red cherry, freshness, nothing overdone. Lovely now, will also last the distance. Very balanced. Justin Knock MW: Deep blue and purple fruits, creamy aromas, plush and layered. Expansive and powerful but also very fine. A really wonderful wine. Dirceu Vianna Junior MW: Youthful, vibrant and elegantly scented. Ripe dark fruits, spice and elegant leafy notes. Great concentration, silky texture and savoury complexity. Drink 2023-2033.

Cabernet franc as a feature from Crawford River is a pretty exciting thing. This is one classy wine.
Pitch-perfect medium weight while being pitch-perfect in terms of that tightrope balance of cabernet franc between ripe fruit and herbal-greenery. It’s heady in choc-berry, liquorice, anise and mocha scents while offering enthusiasts a whiff of brambles, sage leaf and pepper. The palate has a gentle richness with fruit character squelchy, fresh and just right in a sweet-sour zone. It’s long, a little lush but not overt, offers a sense of elegance and yet high drinkability. A charm. Drink 2018-2027.

The cooler season seems to suit Cri de Coeur as of all the pinots, this has the deepest colour – a vibrant garnet, and has amalgamated the best at this early stage. Fragrant with florals and autumn leaves after rain with flavours of morello and sweet red cherries, tamarind and turmeric, pepper and aniseed melding into the medium-bodied palate. The raw silk tannins have some sway and are just coming into unison, with the acidity allowing a lingering finish. Drink by 2034.

A gently mid-weighted pinot founded on a cavalcade of pristine tannins, silty and flecked with a bunchy edginess. A subtle structural adjunct, imparting complexity. When I first opened this, I thought it light. As I shift to better stemware, I find it gorgeous. Pithy red cherry, clove, orange zest, white pepper and sandalwood bound to a fibrous tannic tension. Succulent and long. A lot of work has gone into the textural latitude. Lovely stuff. Drink or hold.

An obsession with a fickle varietal.

Once you experience it, you never forget it. For some wine lovers, Pinot Noir becomes an obsession. While promising one of world's greatest wine experiences, it can also deliver some of the most disappointing. What is it about Pinot that makes it so frustratingly variable? There are known quality factors which offer encouragement to winemakers. Micro-climates have been observed to play an important part in a successful matrix, particularly the diurnal temperature range. Pinot Noir is a little like Riesling, in the sense that it requires warm, but not overly hot days and cool nights to fully develop its maximum flavour potential. Sunshine hours, rainfall, time and rate of precipitation are all important. Countering this is the fact that the same clone will not respond to differences in micro-climate in the same way. Older vines make better wines. Creative and adaptive viticultural management and winemaking are essential. Buy Pinot Noir online. Any questions about our products or shipping?
