Pinot Noir

While we continue to expand our collection of Burgundies, more and more new-world winemakers are coming to terms with this challenging variety. Australians have identified Geelong, the Yarra Valley and the Mornington Peninsula in Victoria as suited to premium Pinot Noir. More recently, Tasmania has shot up the ranks. Mount Mary, Farr Rising and Tolpuddle are names to seek out. New Zealand is also producing some compelling, full bodied wines. Look for regions like Martinborough, Marlborough and Central Otago. MV6 clone, fermented in small batches with mix of cultured and wild yeast, maturation in French oak (new-6 yo) for 10 months. The vineyard at Smythes Creek, west of Ballarat, is on 'harsh' goldfields soil and at a decent elevation of 425m. It delivers a sinewy, mineral-edged pinot noir, a style increasingly associated with the Ballarat region. Red fruits inhabit the wine, redcurrant, sour cherry, cranberry with nettle, weed, forest floor. The fine herbal line is maintained on the palate. It's a cold climate, firm expression unlike most pinots you taste. Drink by 2026.

A fresh and vibrant Pinot from the Upper Yarra Valley, specfifically the Full Moon Vineyard which was planted in 2001. Maturation is in French oak, a portion of it new. The wine is the colour of liqueur cherry, while the aromas include strawberries, spices, herbs, bay leaves, and cassis. A ripe style with attractive maraschino cherry notes, this is well focused, seamless and exhibits red fruits throughout. Very fine tannins, bright acidity, and a lingering finish. After cool, damp weather at flowering, the 2021 vintage in Martinborough was never going to be a bountiful one, but the second half of the season was regarded by many growers as near perfect and the quality of what was finally harvested in this North Island Pinot-Noir hotspot was enviable. Deep scarlet in colour, the aromas of this forthright, vital Pinot evoke both raspberries and plums. On the palate, too, the wine is energetic and exuberant; its structure derives from that force of fruit, darkened by oak and lifted by ripe, fruit-dense acidity rather than tannins. The overall mouthfeel, thus, is smooth rather than grippy, despite this impressive depth of fruit. This is assured Pinot Noir from one of the southern hemisphere’s reference zones.

Medium ruby-purple, the 2017 Estate Pinot Noir Ama bursts with a deep well of aromas: cranberry sauce, burnt orange peel and aniseed are accented by notes of oolong tea, forest floor, iron and iodine. In the mouth, it's medium-bodied, broody, concentrated and layered with a long, flavorful finish. This is a bigger, bolder and spicier version of Ama that offers immediate drinkability straight out of the gate with its bright freshness and bold flavors, but will age gracefully in the cellar for another 5-7 years. 550 cases were made.

A brilliant wine, Peay's 2017 Pinot Noir Estate Ama offers an explosion of sweet red/purplish berry fruit, floral notes and spice, all with a hint of blood orange-infused acidity that gives the wine vibrancy. The 2017 Ama is wonderfully bold and luscious, and yet remains light on its feet. A striking wine from Peay.

The 2017 Pinot Noir Estate Scallop Shelf is distinguished by its bright, focused personality and energy. As it often is, the Scallop Shelf is a wine of reserve and tension, showing plenty of savory and mineral character and less overt fruit than some of the other wines in the range. The 2017 is likely to require at least a few years to come into its own, but it is super-impressive.

I've long loved the pinot noirs from Pegasus Bay. There's a minerally vibe that always draws me in. Complex and meaty with herbal and floral nuance that keeps shifting in the glass, keeping the old schnozz on its toes. This is a portrait of the vineyard and a picture of juicy, ripe, perfectly formed berries. 11 clones are now producing fruit for this wine, and they are showing in this mid-weight and concentrated wine. Morello cherry, satsuma plum, mulberry skin and black-skinned plum-like dusty spice. There’s a fine dusting of cocoa powder and an ever-changing, savoury undercurrent. Winter leaves, petrichor and black, fertile earth. Wow, just wow. The fruit intensity is eye-bulgingly exciting and makes you sit up straight. This is a fine Pinot, focused on the purity of fruit, great oak, and one that will continue to develop for many years. Velvety tannins, long and nubile acidity, finger-laced spice, and a graphite minerality that goes on and on. It’s just sublime, and the finish wraps and tugs at the heartstrings with its red earthy and ferrous finale.

A bolder and immediately more powerful statement of this wine, reflecting a warm vintage. Yet the cooler Pemberton region has reigned it in nicely providing control and precision. A savoury and slightly mushroomy aroma with primary black cherry notes. The palate has a density and life yet with medium to light body. Layered and detailed throughout to a sustained long finish. Make sure you decant to allow the sweet fruit characters to release.

Previously released under the Domaine Boisson-Vadot label, wines from their holdings are now made and presented under the labels of Bernard Boisson's children; his son Pierre Boisson and daughter Anne Boisson. While the two children vinify separately, they share the same cellar in Meursault, and produce wines that are more similar than they are different. Vine age is impressive, with many plots over 60 years old, and no herbicides or fertilisers used. Wines are fermented wild in barrel, thereafter raised in oak for 19-22 months, with no more than 30% new oak used predominantly for the top cuvées.

Red wines represent around 25% of production of the domaine and the Boissons are every bit as serious about their reds as their whites. All the Pinot Noir is 100% destemmed, with traditional, minimal intervention vinification. They undergo a cold soak before the gradual onset of alcoholic fermentation. The end of the vatting is deliberately drawn out by keeping the temperature down, to allow a process more akin to infusion than extraction. The family want the wines to be pure, fragrant, eminently drinkable.

Pierre Boisson forms this Auxey-Duresses from two premier cru parcels in Le Bretterin and Le Reugne with an average vine age of 40 years. Vinification includes a five-day cold soak followed by fermentation in stainless-steel vats with pumpovers and pigeage. The wine is settled over 10 days before being run to barrel for 18 months maturation in oak, 20% of which are new. Bottled by gravity, unfined and unfiltered.

Place of Changing Winds is located between Mount Macedon and Mount Bullengarook, which inspired the name of this cuvée. The Between Two Mountains, the most representative of the season, is made from all the estate's plots except those used for the Beyond the Forest cuvée. It matured for 18 months in Stockinger casks, with 50% new oak, though the impact of the new oak is minimal due to the large 1,000-liter cask size. It was bottled in January 2024.

A blend of all the estate sites, except the small parcel making up the Beyond The Forest pinot. This needed a lot of time to unfurl, so best to decant it. Named for its more or less equidistance between Mount Macedon and Mount Bullengarook. Produced from all plots on the estate. Matured in 50% new and old Stockinger casks.
Svelte and sleek with distinct succulence and pucker. A sheath of lacy, granitic tannin over dark cherry, tumbles of dried herbs, woody spice, some nori and truffle-like characters in the mix and a general sense of ultra pure, tart cherry juice and flecks of dried currant and cranberry. A real feast for the senses here. Incredible extension of flavour and an almost unnerving consistency to texture in all that – a long and exacting ride of character and charm. Loads of evocative perfume too. Wonderful, all up. Drink 2024 - 2040.

The 2022 Between Two Mountains Pinot Noir is spicy and fine on the nose, with cherry pip, raspberry leaf, crushed rocks, pumice stone tannins and black tea. In the mouth, the wine is all about rose petals and iron, silty tannins and lashings of blood plum skin, with violets and Pink Lady apples, rosemary, blood orange, arnica and a very gentle amaro persuasion. A light finish is made persistent by enduring tannins that chew and sway. It's so nice. Distinct. It's easy to swoon somewhat over the packaging, which is not important to wine quality but an indication of aesthetics. It matured for 18 months in Stockinger casks (50% new) and was bottled in January 2024. 13.2% alcohol, sealed under Diam.

Coal River Valley pinot noir made by Samantha Connew. A very pretty bright ruby in the glass with aromas of amaro and blossom-flecked red cherry, raspberry and wild strawberry fruits underscored with hints of spice, Peking duck, leaf litter, dried citrus rind, struck flint and earth. It smells gorgeous, and the palate follows up with smallgoods and undergrowth and mountain herb tones, finishing long with detail, sapid acidity and powdery tannins – it's a wonderful release. If you're ever down Tassie way, make sure you check out the new Pressing Matters cellar door too. It's a beauty. Drink by 2038.

Beautiful definition across the trio of Principia pinots, this is the most savoury yet still excellent fruit in the mix. Rhubarb, dark cherries, blood orange and chinotto with heady aromas of damp forest floor and baking spices. Fuller bodied with shapely, velvety tannins and fine acidity all add to the wine’s terrific length and carry. Best of all, this is so delicious. Classy wine. Drink 2023 - 2033.

Made with 90% whole berries with a small portion of whole bunches. Matured in barriques (25% new). A medium, bright crimson red. An excellent set of regional Victorian pinots from Provenance in '22, this sits nicely between the Ballarat and Geelong versions. A mix of red and black fruits together with a little thyme and peony. Medium bodied, this silky-textured and well-balanced wine is ready to enjoy but, equally, will only become more complex over time. Drink by 2031.

This is both lithe and sinewy. There’s macerated fruit, there’s an earthen aspect, there’s fragrant herbs and a meaty, bloody, rusty character. It doesn’t have a lot of volume but it makes the most of itself. Tannin is emery-board-fine, and length is very good. This is one of those wines that grows on you more and more, the longer you sit with it. It’s understated but it’s complex. Drink 2025-2029+

Brooding with aromas of red cherries, ripe strawberries, black tea and a gentle meatiness. This is the richer and more structured than Provenance's Ballarat and Henty pinots. Driven to create one of the new world’s great cool-climate vineyards, it took Mike and Claudia Weersing 15 years and a quixotic global journey that included a lengthy stopover in Burgundy before they found their perfect site. Inspired by the climate and soils of that region, the duo finally found their special place in the limestone-rich soils of Waikari in North Canterbury. From here Mike and Claudia established Pyramid Valley and emerged as NZ pioneers of both biodynamic practices and high-density viticulture. For almost 20 years they inspired and/or challenged all those who came into their orbit. Their minute scale and exceptional dedication to their soils and vines led to some incredible wines being produced. First visiting the vineyard in 2007, Steve Smith MW (then of Craggy Range) was one of many affected by what he describes as one the most compelling and unique vineyards he has ever visited. When Mike’s health went into decline, the Weersings were forced to sell and Smith and his partner Brian Sheth acquired the estate in late 2017. The spectre of Burgundy is writ large over the foundation and ethos of Pyramid Valley, yet we should not expect imitations in terms of the style of the wines. Rather they have their own very distinctive style and energy, and this is precisely as it should be with terroir-driven wines; uniqueness is the point.

Both of Pyramid Valley’s Pinot Noir vineyards are densely planted on clay/limestone slopes. Earth Smoke sits on the richer soils of the two: an expansive, east-facing slope with strong, beautifully structured soils that are comparatively high in limestone. The name here comes from the nickname given to fumitory, a plant of the poppy family that can be found thriving in this 0.85-hectare plot. Although both wines share a familial DNA, the later-picked Earth Smoke is typically the more structured and darker of the two, with more fruit weight to go with its tender, fine tannins.

Having made no Earth Smoke in 2021 due to spring frosts and cool flowering ravaging the yield, it's a welcome return in 2022. Translucent, pure and delicately textured, this Pinot Noir shows a fine hand and the confidence to be hands off. The wine is calm; in the mouth, it gives the impression that a hush has descended. It is attractively scented - full of dried herbs, cherry, festive spice, violets and a hint of smoke. There's plentiful concentration without weight. The tannins are pliant, providing the finest coating for your palate. Drink : 2025 - 2033.

A crispness, a pulse of tart cherry, a crunch of cranberry, some nougat licks and woody spice with sappy pomegranate juice, a touch of hazelnut paste with bergamot tea, sage leaf and dried rosemary amongst the mix of characters here. It’s got volume of intense, granitic minerality and a grumbling swish of pumice-like, almost Italianate texture to tannins amongst the vibrancy of fruit character.

Sourced from a 0.8ha block of biodynamically farmed pinot noir on the Pyramid Valley Waikari estate. A beautiful, complex-smelling wine with brooding dark plum and cherry fruits, cut with spice, blood orange, amaro herbs, raked leaves, pressed wildflowers, twiggy nuance and crushed stone. So calm and composed on the palate with a sapid calcareous cadence, fine, chalky tannin grip and a long, gamey retreat.

Closed at first but soon opens up with an opulently perfumed nose, layered red/black fruits, florals and spice; a lot of earth and vinosity here, too. Hard to tease it all apart, both on nose and palate. Textural and compact with wonderfully integrated fruit/oak tannins and a spine of bright acidity. Clearly built for the long haul while offering a lot of joy already. Biodynamic. Drink: 2024 - 2032.

Angel Flower is a cooler, more exposed block than Earth Smoke. The shallow soils and north-facing aspect here result in a more floral and aromatic wine, although the weight and shape of the palate have much in common with Pyramid’s other single-site Pinot. The team have also recently planted a little Chardonnay on these soils, recognising its potential as a great white wine terroir.

It feels open weave and pretty with rose hip tea, alpine herbal elements, faint game meat, undergrowth and toasty spice strewn around the place. It slips into every corner of the palate, an attractive, sour-sweet flow of tart cherry dressed up with those savoury elements all sheathed in a web of ultra fine, silty, lacy tannin. It finishes with black tea and truffle and a building, drying, refreshing pucker. Fine, elegant, vibrant and energetic. A triumph for the variety.

From a 0.7ha limestone/clay, north-facing, biodynamically farmed slice of the Pyramid Valley estate in Waikari. A beautifully perfumed, ethereal wine that shows delicate redcurrant, red cherry and raspberry fruits with hints of crushed stone, red flowers, blood orange, clover blossom, sous bois and red apple pastries. There is a lot of light in this wine, all detail and shimmering clarity with a spacious mouthfeel, sapidity to burn and the most graceful of exits. Beautiful drinking.

Nose a little shy at first, then lots of perfumed red fruit emerges - tamarillo and plum, a dash of spice, a lift of blue flowers. The delicate, dancing palate has a surprising intensity of ripe, flowing red fruits, lovely fine, chalky tannins and bright, saline/minerally acidity. Very good length. This is smartly made, with no rough edges but isn’t overly polished. Drink: 2024 - 2032.

In 2018, Pyramid Valley became a two-property estate when it purchased the Manata vineyard in Central Otago’s Lowburn sub-region. The team quickly applied their precise viticultural standards to what was already considered one of the greatest sites in the region. In just three years, Paulin and his team have doubled the organic matter in the soil and achieved organic certification through BioGro NZ. They also immediately recognised the potential of the block they now call Snake’s Tongue—a nod to one of the many common names used for blue borage: Viper’s (snake’s) bugloss (ox-tongue). Fermented in an open-top concrete tulip, with 25% whole bunches and as much whole berry as possible, the wine matured in 25% new 500-litre puncheons for 12 months, followed by a further six months in neutral oak before being bottled unfined and unfiltered.

    Other reviews...
It’s a fleshy, deeply flavoured pinot noir with an elegant bent under its more muscular frame. Dark choc-raspberry, liquorice, cranberry, aniseed, some garam masala spice elements, a bit of warm game meat and some rosy, rose hip tea elements. The wine quite grippy and drying in tannin, a little new leather-meets-river-pebble feel here. Bold and savoury hand-in-hand, though the dryer frame may challenge some for expectations.

Lowburn Terrace pinot noir from the Mānatu vineyard. Mid-crimson with red plum and dark cherry fruits cut with spice, citrus blossom, dried orange peel, amaro herbs, pressed wildflowers and crushed rocks. Sleek, savoury and red-fruited on the palate with layers of fine spice and some distant game and amaro tones; tannins super-fine and chalky and a bright, minerally cadence.

The 2022 Snake's Tongue Pinot Noir won't be released until October 2024, so this is definitely a pre-release tasting, but it’s a wonderful insight into what is to come. There’s petrichor, asphalt, graphite, black tea, satsuma plum, cherry flesh and red apple skins. This has the tannic density of the 2021, but there is far more restraint and delicacy in the fruit profile. I love the way this performs in the mouth, with dried ginger, blood orange, red pepper, a hint of sesame seed and orchard fruit. A superb wine of presence and delicacy. Drink: 2024 - 2036.

The 2020 Pinot Noir Earth Smoke is a massively different wine from its stablemate Angel Flower, giving a more expansive wine that blossoms in the mouth without any sense of weight. There's elegance and sense of precision. And do you know what? It feels special. If I were tasting blind, aromatically, I'd think it were a cool climate Syrah with sandalwood, fennel, agave and white pepper characters in abundance alongside pure cherry fruit. The finish is fresh and precise. Drink 2024-2035.

The 2023 The Sabre Pinot Noir is all cherries and exotic spice, with lean, leafy characters on the mid-palate. This is a complex wine of presence and finesse, but with the 2024 Dagger so fresh in my mind, I can't help searching for some of that perfectly ripe, concentrated and yet capacious fruit that I tasted there. This is undoubtedly more complex and has cherry pip, aniseed, clove and iodine, so gravitate to what makes you sing. 13.5% alcohol, sealed under screw cap. Drink 2025-2033.

This delicious, vibrant Pinot Noir is produced from four different clones planted in vineyards located at Gumeracha, Forreston and Lobethal in the Adelaide Hills. 2024 was a cool but sunny vintage that produced low yields but high quality fruit. Brimming with savoury red fruits it sees no oak in order to preserve freshness and purity.

A light, supplely textured Pinot brimming with red fruits that makes for great everyday drinking.

Red to dark red in colour with black toned edges and a translucent red hue. Very fragrant out of the glass with violet, red to dark cherry and strawberry scents sailing through the nostrils. Some fresh herb, delicate forest floor and spicy rhubarb notes are also present. Delicious strawberry and cherry fruits drive the light, supplely textured palate with rhubarb, subtle anise, forest floor and spicy dried herb elements sitting underneath. Polished tannins with fresh acidity lending vibrancy to the juicy mid length finish.

A fine Pinot Noir from the Adelaide Hills, the colour here is a bright crimson. The nose exhibits delightful notes of red fruits, chinotto, a hint of tomato bush and a lovely cherry cola character. This is sleek in every way with bright acidity and fine balance. An elegant, stylish Pinot with a lingering finish, this will provide pleasure for five to six years but is really drinking nicely at the moment. Drink 2024-2030.

The 2024 The **** Pinot Noir leads with an abundance of red berries and sumptuous spice: pink peppercorns, raspberry pip, anise and red apple. In the mouth, the wine is chalky, flavorsome and delicious. There's impressive concentration and density of flavor, but it's never at the expense of balance or elegance. This is so good! It's the best *** yet for ****. 13% alcohol, sealed under screw cap. Drink 2025-2034.

The vines are east facing and close to the lake, with less afternoon sun (which means it isn't exposed to the extended heat of the afternoon). "There is clay down there which gives the tannins more mobility and animation," says Nick Mills.
The 2020 Emma's Block Mature Vine Pinot Noir leads with dehydrated cranberry, cherry blossom, graphite and dried star anise. The nose is exotic and restrained at once. This is the entree to the palate which is defined absolutely by the tannins that feel very much like they plume in the wine, like a drop of blood in water. These are wines to feel as much as they are to taste, and this is what helps them stand alone in this place. It’s superb, with unbroken form through the long finish—no strays, no rough edges, no breaks. 13.5% alcohol, sealed under Diam. Drink 2023-2035.

Extremely perfumed with a pretty ripeness and clarity, offering plums and al-dente strawberries. Some cantaloupe, too. It's medium- to full-bodied with juicy fruit that's lovely and open. You want to drink it now. And do. Crunchy yet velvety and caressing in the mouth-feel from the lovely, open tannins. From biodynamically grown grapes with Demeter certification. The first thing I noticed upon opening the bottle was a ripe, confectionery-like aroma that filled the room. After a bit of breathing, red cherry, strawberry, plum and black tea came forth to round out the delightful nose, with some stemminess obvious once you inspected the wine a bit closer. It had a juicy, salivating quality to it that made it very easy to drink up the bright, silky liquid, and it was even a touch better on the second night. Like the Chardonnay, it’s just as nice as a sipper or with food.

Growing up in Healesville, a young Rob Hall did some summer work in the vineyards during the early to mid nineties before taking up full time work at Yarra Ridge then Punt Road. From 2002 to 2011 he was the winemaker at Mount Mary, it wasn’t until 2014 that he took the leap and began his own operation.
2024 was excellent year in the Yarra Valley, after a wet spring, summer came good with slow ripening days, resulting in lovely aromatics and wonderful intensity. This Pinot Noir was sourced from five vineyards – Harriet’s, Full Moon, Boat O’Craigo, Nenagh Park and Yarrawalla with only 10% of the Harriet’s component being whole bunch. Maturation was predominantly in seasoned hogheads and puncheons (300 & 500L).

Rich, powerful and expansive Yarra Valley Pinot that over delivers.

Semi translucent dark red core with black shaded edges and a light red hue. Exhibiting a perfumed like intensity, the nose is engulfed with dark cherry, violet, strawberry and subtle rhubarb scents. Anise, brambly dried herb, forest floor and spice notes also chime in to lend further interest. Expansive, concentrated and supplely textured, rich dark cherry and strawberry fruits unfold across the palate with terrific power. Extending through the back half are complexing notions of subtle rhubarb, traces of anise, brambly cedar, dried herbs, delicate forest floor and spice. Velvet smooth tannins impart a silken feel which carries right through to a long, incredibly moreish finish. This is Rob Hall in top form.

An obsession with a fickle varietal.

Once you experience it, you never forget it. For some wine lovers, Pinot Noir becomes an obsession. While promising one of world's greatest wine experiences, it can also deliver some of the most disappointing. What is it about Pinot that makes it so frustratingly variable? There are known quality factors which offer encouragement to winemakers. Micro-climates have been observed to play an important part in a successful matrix, particularly the diurnal temperature range. Pinot Noir is a little like Riesling, in the sense that it requires warm, but not overly hot days and cool nights to fully develop its maximum flavour potential. Sunshine hours, rainfall, time and rate of precipitation are all important. Countering this is the fact that the same clone will not respond to differences in micro-climate in the same way. Older vines make better wines. Creative and adaptive viticultural management and winemaking are essential.
