Pinot Noir
While we continue to expand our collection of Burgundies, more and more new-world winemakers are coming to terms with this challenging variety. Australians have identified Geelong, the Yarra Valley and the Mornington Peninsula in Victoria as suited to premium Pinot Noir. More recently, Tasmania has shot up the ranks. Mount Mary, Farr Rising and Tolpuddle are names to seek out. New Zealand is also producing some compelling, full bodied wines. Look for regions like Martinborough, Marlborough and Central Otago.

2021 Mount Mary Pinot NoirYarra Valley, Victoria, AUSTRALIA$225. 00Bottle$2700.00 DozenABV: 13.3%Closure: CorkThe Mount Mary Pinot Noir blends fruit from the original 1971 block with newer plantings featuring modern clones such as MV6, 777, 667, 115, and Pommard on American rootstocks. Emphasizing simplicity in winemaking, the Pinot Noir undergoes fermentation with 100% whole berries, 10-14 days of skin contact, and matures in barrels for 16 months, incorporating 25% new oak barriques.
Other Reviews....
100% destemmed and fermented with as many whole berries as possible. Left to soak for four days, pre-fermentation with one pump over per day, then plunged three times per day. 15 months in French barriques (25% new). A bright crimson red. Perfumed and seductive even at this early stage. Aromas of wild red berries, gentle spice, dark rose and bracken. Concentrated and structured with very fine, sinewy and savoury tannins. A brilliant, non-mainstream Yarra Valley pinot that's been built to go the distance. Drink 2022 - 2035.

Philip Rich - Halliday's Australian Wine CompanionThe winemaking investment in the pinot noir has been substantial. Maker Sam Middleton eschews the common regional recipe of whole-bunches, instead maximizing whole berries. These are extracted judiciously with pump-overs and plunging, a sure way to avoid soft, hollow wines. The defining factor of these pinots is the lack of obvious fruit, Middleton’s aim. This is my type of ideology, with riffs on root spice, damson, quince paste and griotte, that sweet cherry scent seldom found in pinot outside of great Burgundy. A stunning pinot. I may be underscoring it. Drinkable now, but best from 2026.

Ned Goodwin MW - JamesSuckling.comThe 2021 Pinot Noir is aromatic and silky (two obvious qualities I accept). It offers notes of redcurrant, pomegranate, cherry, tobacco, graphite/lead pencil, a hint of poached strawberry and even inflections of sumac. Quince paste is suggested, and quince paste it is. (The power of suggestion is strong, but sometimes it's apt—you've got to be big enough to own up to descriptors that aren't your own.) There are also juicy, ripe, summer strawberries. This is spiced and rich and sits firmly on the mid-palate, but it is supple and succulent also. Cool-feeling tannins shape the fruit in the mouth and draw the wine out over the long finish. It has a super svelte, streamlined shape. The tannins are gently chewy and persist through the finish. This is a lovely wine. It is placid but sure, sapid. No whole bunches contribute to the texture here. It has super fine tannins. Four to six days pumped over, the wine was plunged rigorously during ferment. Generally, it sits on the skins for a couple of days post-ferment (14-16 days in total) and then is pressed. It matured in 25% new oak for 14-16 months. 13.3% alcohol, sealed under natural cork. Drink 2023 - 2041.

Erin Larkin - Robert Parker's Wine AdvocateSimple, timeless labels on these wines from Mount Mary, and I’m glad they’ve not changed for quite some time. Sam Middleton thinks maybe the best release since the 2015.
Ripe strawberry, a little spice, pretty too with some rose and chamomile, mint and undergrowth. It’s medium-bodied, red berries and honey, with a savoury tobacco edge, the quality of tannin is excellent here, offering grip and a sort of tea leaf character, which puts me in mind of Barbaresco (though don’t mind me), and the finish is long, firm and shapely, and kind of ferrous and minerally. It feels young and pent up as at now, to some extent, though I reckon it will evolve into a classic MM Pinot with considered cellaring. A terrific release. Drink 2026 - 2038+

The first Yarra Valley Pinot from Munda comes from a mix of red-brown clay, deep red volcanic soils, and granite. From '98 plantings of MV6 at Gladysdale. The fact that this was The James Halliday Wine of Show at last year's Yarra Valley Wine Show, beating the Hazeldene Chardonnay in the process, says it all. Perfumed and captivating aromas of red fruits, dark rose and a little whole-bunched-derived sous bois. Medium bodied, this silky-textured wine finishes with just the right amount of understated and persistent tannins. Irresistible now and, I'd imagine, over the next six to eight years plus. After cool, damp weather at flowering, the 2021 vintage in Martinborough was never going to be a bountiful one, but the second half of the season was regarded by many growers as near perfect and the quality of what was finally harvested in this North Island Pinot-Noir hotspot was enviable. Deep scarlet in colour, the aromas of this forthright, vital Pinot evoke both raspberries and plums. On the palate, too, the wine is energetic and exuberant; its structure derives from that force of fruit, darkened by oak and lifted by ripe, fruit-dense acidity rather than tannins. The overall mouthfeel, thus, is smooth rather than grippy, despite this impressive depth of fruit. This is assured Pinot Noir from one of the southern hemisphere’s reference zones.

The 2016 Pinot Noir Estate Scallop Shelf comes across as a bit shy in the way it speaks with a hushed voice. Inward and not especially expressive, the 2016 doesn't have either the depth of the Ama not the energy of the Pomarium. Instead, the Scallop Shelf lies somewhere in the middle, with a less clearly defined personality than the other Pinots in the range.

I've long loved the pinot noirs from Pegasus Bay. There's a minerally vibe that always draws me in. Complex and meaty with herbal and floral nuance that keeps shifting in the glass, keeping the old schnozz on its toes. This is a portrait of the vineyard and a picture of juicy, ripe, perfectly formed berries. 11 clones are now producing fruit for this wine, and they are showing in this mid-weight and concentrated wine. Morello cherry, satsuma plum, mulberry skin and black-skinned plum-like dusty spice. There’s a fine dusting of cocoa powder and an ever-changing, savoury undercurrent. Winter leaves, petrichor and black, fertile earth. Wow, just wow. The fruit intensity is eye-bulgingly exciting and makes you sit up straight. This is a fine Pinot, focused on the purity of fruit, great oak, and one that will continue to develop for many years. Velvety tannins, long and nubile acidity, finger-laced spice, and a graphite minerality that goes on and on. It’s just sublime, and the finish wraps and tugs at the heartstrings with its red earthy and ferrous finale.

Previously released under the Domaine Boisson-Vadot label, wines from their holdings are now made and presented under the labels of Bernard Boisson's children; his son Pierre Boisson and daughter Anne Boisson. While the two children vinify separately, they share the same cellar in Meursault, and produce wines that are more similar than they are different. Vine age is impressive, with many plots over 60 years old, and no herbicides or fertilisers used. Wines are fermented wild in barrel, thereafter raised in oak for 19-22 months, with no more than 30% new oak used predominantly for the top cuvées.
Red wines represent around 25% of production of the domaine and the Boissons are every bit as serious about their reds as their whites. All the Pinot Noir is 100% destemmed, with traditional, minimal intervention vinification. They undergo a cold soak before the gradual onset of alcoholic fermentation. The end of the vatting is deliberately drawn out by keeping the temperature down, to allow a process more akin to infusion than extraction. The family want the wines to be pure, fragrant, eminently drinkable.
Pierre Boisson forms this Auxey-Duresses from two premier cru parcels in Le Bretterin and Le Reugne with an average vine age of 40 years. Vinification includes a five-day cold soak followed by fermentation in stainless-steel vats with pumpovers and pigeage. The wine is settled over 10 days before being run to barrel for 18 months maturation in oak, 20% of which are new. Bottled by gravity, unfined and unfiltered.

The corks used come from one tiny supplier and are extra long and extra wide (55mm x 25mm) for the village, 1er cru and Grand cru wines and are untreated with no paraffin and the bottles are then sealed with soft wax to ensure no problems with premature oxidation. One plot is in Boudriotte itself and one in Fairendes, vinified together. The Fairendes component is older with very small grapes, so this was vinified as whole bunches, added into the fermentation vat in layers alternating with the destemmed fruit. A deeper more robust purple, a clear heady raspberry fruit, still with lees in suspension, and a tannin or two. Drink from 2029-2035.

This is called ‘the new entry level pinot noir’ which is a fun thing at $80 or so, but of course we know the detail here can command such an introduction. From younger vines on the estate. There’s some great DNA of the site, or as I interpret from tasting just about all the releases from this place. Good one.
Delicious. Great drinking. Fine. A good lead of game meat, sappy cherry, green olive, alpine herbs, just-ripe strawberry and a general sense of softness, balance, resolve with its time in bottle and maturation generally. A silty feel to tannin, but relaxed, the wine generally so; long and luxurious in a casual kind of way. A little greenery here, so expect that, coolness and minty flickers. Enjoyable. 2023 Place of Changing Winds Between Two Mountains Pinot NoirMacedon Ranges, Victoria, AUSTRALIA$140. 00Bottle$1680.00 DozenABV: 12%Closure: Diam CorkNamed for its location between Mount Macedon and Mount Bullengarook, Between Two Mountains is the most representative expression of the season. A cooler, later season brought a wine of lifted perfume, fine structure, and striking poise.
Whole bunches made up nearly a third of the blend, enhancing the aromatic complexity and spice. Maturation took place over 21 months in a range of Stockinger casks (with minimal new oak impact), as well as glass globe fermenters. Seductive and finely detailed, this should be amongst the most captivating wines yet from this remarkable site.Other Reviews....
This is the only pinot noir from 2023 from POCW. About a third is whole bunch across all the clones and sites on the estate vineyard. The wine ends up in Stockinger barrels for 21 months. Serious approach.
A very good wine. Very. Fine, tight, tense, succulent, dark cherry, sour cherry, fennel, blood orange, white pepper, game meat – a lot on, you could keep listing detail but the idea is this is complex, compelling, with everything woven beautifully together. Fruit feels bright and sweet yet just on the cusp, and so fresh, the persistence of all that superb – a touch overtly fruity for those who seek that. An elegance but with a kink of funk and interest. The x-factor we seek. And the personality of place. Stellar. Drink 2025 - 2035.

Mike Bennie - The Wine FrontThe 2023 Between Two Mountains Pinot Noir leads with sandalwood and clary sage, cranberry, cigar box and graphite. In the mouth, the wine is loaded with dried herbs, cold tea and wet asphalt, and it lingers long on the palate through the finish. There are also notes of rose petals and cracked pistachios. An obsession with a fickle varietal.
Once you experience it, you never forget it. For some wine lovers, Pinot Noir becomes an obsession. While promising one of world's greatest wine experiences, it can also deliver some of the most disappointing. What is it about Pinot that makes it so frustratingly variable? There are known quality factors which offer encouragement to winemakers. Micro-climates have been observed to play an important part in a successful matrix, particularly the diurnal temperature range. Pinot Noir is a little like Riesling, in the sense that it requires warm, but not overly hot days and cool nights to fully develop its maximum flavour potential. Sunshine hours, rainfall, time and rate of precipitation are all important. Countering this is the fact that the same clone will not respond to differences in micro-climate in the same way.
