We were looking forward to tasting this collection, particularly the Solear and the PX. This wine comes in a half bottle with a stelvin cap. Previous shipments were outstanding, the importer only bringing in enough sherry to last a couple of months – something has gone wrong with this shipment.
Bright pale straw colour with deep straw hue, indicating that the wine has lost its freshness, which it has. The nose is not clean. Aroma of flor yeast with a dirty vegemite end note. The stale nature of the sherry is also evident on the palate, however, to the rescue, emerge flavours of flor yeast and salted almonds. Warm spirit, followed by salty almond aftertaste.

Glogg means heated wine and is the main traditional Christmas drink in Sweden. For many years, the Swedes have spiced and heated wine during long and cold winters. Recipes vary, however, the Glogg has always been based on certain spices, sugar and wine.
This version is produced according to a recipe from the 1880's and has now become the standard for the real Glogg taste. A hot red wine base is used with ginger, cardoman, clove and other spices; aquavit is added and finally the drink is topped up with almonds and raisins. 10% alc./vol.

Deep walnut brown colour with deep olive green hue. The viscosity of the wine would appear even greater than motor oil. Superb nose of raisins, raisin cake, plum pudding, honey and toffee. The palate weight is even denser than Lustau’s PX – creating an amazing mouthfeel. There is great concentration of palate flavour – honey and dried raisins over a layer of Christmas pudding, followed by honeyed figs. Wonderfully sweet and luscious, yet with sufficient acidity to avoid cloying. A truly magnificent example of the style.

Only 6 out of the total 1400 wines submitted at the Bacchus 2006 received this prestigous award. The Bacchus is a key event of the International Organization of Wine and Vine cicuit in Southern Europe, open to all types of wine from around the world.
Deep caramel, onion brown colour with green olive hue. The nose is quite powerful, with lifted rancio and orange rind top notes, followed by an endnote of mixed nuts. The palate flavours are full, but the wine does not have the acid backbone evidenced in the Amontillado. The rancio character is quite dominant on the palate overlaid with hazelnut, toffee and just a touch of sweetness. The flavour profile is a cross between Amontillado and Oloroso. A powerfully long aftertaste of hazelnut and toffee with the rancio flavours persisting.

Flavors of baked black plum, brown sugar and molasses are both juicy and rich, and then toffee and mocha take over on the finish. Sweet and thick for sure, but with discernible fruit and vitality. The family’s origins can be traced to the North of Spain, but moved to the South in the 18th Century. In 1792, JOSE PANTALEON HIDALGO acquired a Sherry Bodega in the centre of San Lucar de Barrameda. Six generations later, the company is still owned by the Hidalgo family. Manzanilla is the driest of the Sherries as well as being the lightest.
The terroir of the vineyards that is set between the sea, the river and the marshlands to the North creates a degree of humidity and microclimate that allows the flor yeast to grow on the surface of the maturing wine all year round. Elsewhere in Sherry, the flor yeast character dies off the surface during summer and winter. The climatic situation has curious parallels with the Sauternes region of France.
A refreshing, bone dry sherry, that is a perfect match for prosciutto and fresh seafood. Classic very pale, almost water like colour water like hue. Superb lifted nose of sea spray salt, cashew and flor yeast showing all the characteristics of a top Manzanilla. The palate has excellent length and depth – a wonderful juxtaposition of salt, cashew nut and flor yeast flavours – mouthfilling and refreshingly clean and bone dry. Perfect balance. Exceptionally long salty, flor yeast aftertaste.
A fantastic Summer drink. Enjoy over the festive season.

Going up the ladder of age, concentration, complexity (and price), the 1968 Don PX Selección aged in American oak butts for some 47 years before bottling, and was never blended with any other vintage. The wine has 340 grams of unfermented sugar and higher acidity given its age, as evaporation in barrel concentrates everything. This is somehow less dense and more pungent than the other old sweet wines, with more spices, lots of cinnamon and cocoa powder. It's more fluid, somehow lighter, and with some notes reminiscent of oloroso and even amontillado. There were 6,900 liters of this wine, which was bottled in various formats, including magnums, three and six liter bottles.

Each year they select a number of single vintage, sweet PX wines to be bottled, the first of which (besides the young wine) is the 1987 Don Px Gran Reserva in 2016 - a wine aged in American oak casks for some 28 years. These wines are almost indestructible, so the drinking windows are mostly academic. This showcases the classical aromas and palate of an old PX from Montilla, strong notes of dark chocolate, dried figs and plums, raisins and sweet spices; the dense, thick and persistent palate where the 380 grams of unfermented sugar are not noticeable, as they are balanced by good acidity that also gets concentrated by age. This is probably the densest of all the wines I tasted today, and there is a distinct, perfumed, almost floral note here (is it violet pastille?), which makes it extremely attractive. It's also the most drinkable of all these old vintages, very balanced within its sweet profile, with marked flavors (also licorice and black olives) that stay in your mouth for one minute. Exotic and exuberant. This is incredibly young and lively, and very good value for the age and quality it delivers.

The 1990 Don PX Gran Reserva has unusually high sugar, close to 400 grams (when this range is usually less than 360). Compared with the rest of the wines, this feels like a very good value. These wines mature in old 550-liter American oak casks for decades, and the wines have great concentration. It felt unusually perfumed, a little spirity and with notes that made me think of Moscatel, notes of orange peel and flowers, and of course the raisin and dry dates and figs from these wines made with raisins. It’s sweet and dense like motor oil and leaves a combination of raisins and chocolate in the spicy and faintly warm finish. This was bottled in early 2019.

The secret of this Vermouth is the mix of Piedmont’s Nebbiolo - whence the well-known Barolo and Barbaresco are produced - with white wines like Moscato, carefully selected and combined with herbal infusions, spices and roots including wormwood, lime, marjoram, mint, cinchona bark, cardamon, vanilla, carnation berries, gentian root, sage, citrus peel, fennel and coriander - many of them grown in the Occitan Alps near the winery. While it's reported to be slightly lighter in style than many other Italian Rossos, a tinge of cola sweetness on the finish is complexed by bitterness and spice. Especially recommended in a Martinez, otherwise, delicious on the rocks with an orange peel garnish and a splash of tonic. 18% Alc./Vol.

Founded in 1888, Bordiga's motto, 'tradition is our future', neatly sums up this great artisan distiller from near Cuneo, in the foothills of the Maritime Alps. Pietro Bordiga was a bar owner in Turin before he relocated to Cuneo at the end of the 19th century, with the distillery just out of town on a road leading into the mountains. This location was essential for Pietro, as the Occitan valleys are home to a vast array of herbs and other botanical ingredients, essential to making traditional vermouth, aperitivi and amaro, as well as wild juniper that became the basis of Italy's oldest continuously produced gin. Even today, most of Bordiga's botanicals grow wild in the varying valleys of the Maritime Alps, with the unique, elevated environment ideally suited to developing and retaining the essential oils. All the wild, and naturally organic, botanicals are still collected by hand at distinctly different moments, so as to capture the best expression of their individual natures, whether they be the root, leaves or flowers.
They are then dried either in the open or on drying racks, with the elevation and cool of the macroclimate preserving pristine aromatics. Extraction of these aromatics is achieved through maceration in triple-distilled grain alcohol in Bordiga's original wood-burning copper still, with each botanical steeped separately, so as to ensure the optimal expression, as timing differs to target the sweet spot for each.

Gordo Blanco plays an important part in the production of this type of sherry and so it is with this wine, where we see fermentation halted at the required level of sweetness by the addition of natural grape spirit. The grapes are harvested at their peak of ripeness to achieve this level of flavour. Blending through a wood solera usually follows to develop a more developed and constant style.This attractive sweet sherry displays a brilliant old gold colour and has rich bouquet of developed fruit and fine spirit. On the palate there is excellent harmony between the intensity of the sweet fruit and the residual sweetness of the wine.At bottling this wine had a Baumé of 6.9, an acid level of 3.3 gr/L, a pH of 4.02 and an alcohol of 18.0%.As well as an aperitif wine, it is enjoyable as an after dinner drink or as a night cap. Serve at room temperature or chilled, according to taste. This wine is a particularly good partner for the hearty soups served in winter such as ox-tail or minestrone. It is also equally good after dinner with a platter of dried fruits, nuts and fruit cake with coffee.

Each wine is classified in ascending order of quality with the average age stipulations for each descriptor graded as follows: for 'Rutherglen', two to five years old; for 'Classic', five to 12 years old; for 'Grand', 12 to 20 years old, and for 'Rare', 20 years or more. Naturally, there's an enormous difference in the concentration and complexity of wines distinguished by these grades - not to mention price. When compared with first growth Sauternes or a Pedro Ximenez Sherry of similar age, purchasing a bottle or two of these amazing fortifieds will seem less like blatant hedonism and more like carefully considered insurance against the chance of an extended winter.

The Rare cuvee is pure nectar. My favorite of this quartet is the virtually perfect non-vintage Rare Muscat Merchant Prince. Its dark amber color is accompanied by an extraordinary perfume of toffee, caramels, prunes, and raisins with hints of maple syrup and soy. Although its viscosity is reminiscent of motor oil, the wine is not cloyingly sweet because of good underlying acidity as well as surprising tannin that frames this enormously endowed, sweet elixir. This stunning offering is one of Australia’s treasures. Justifiably renowned for their tremendous dessert wines, Campbell’s four cuvees all performed impressively well, making one wonder if the price difference between the regular and rare offerings is really worth it. Certainly there is a bit more complexity and intensity to the Rare Tokay and Rare Muscat, which emerge from a solera system averaging 60 years of age. In any event, the tasting notes for all four wines are nearly identical to any of the great Australian fortifieds, such as Buller, Chambers Rosewood, etc

Definitely a once-in-a-lifetime experience (or more, if possible!) that displays the fortified winemaker's great art so beautifully, with enviable refinement and elegance. It is both luscious and multi-faceted in flavours. The house style brings deep pockets of the most delicious spice to enliven plum pudding, burnt fig, salted caramel, nougat with a chocolate-covered almond nuttiness. Infinite charm. 375ml.

A neutral grape spirit (also made from Macabeu grapes) is used to extract the flavours of up to 150 botanicals including green walnuts, rosemary, thyme, orange peel, wormwood and cardamom. After the fermentation process, the vermouth spends six months aging in a solera system enhancing its distinctive dark colour and herbaceous flavour.
One of the main differences between this and other Vermouths is the very low use of caramel. The result is a lighter, more fragrant expression with greater balance and complexity. It's recommended served on ice with a slice of orange and a green olive (topped with soda if desired) or in Martinis, Manhattans or Negronis.
Tasting note: Deep sienna brown with a gold ochre hue. Opens pleasantly fragrant with sweet spices (cardamom, cinnamon) mixed with stewed fruits and tangerine peel; second pass finds sweet oregano and hints of sarsaparilla. The history of cocoa and chocolate is well known to date back to the Aztecs of South America. The ‘plumed serpent’ is said to have bought it back from the ‘Lost Paradise.’ By consuming it one attained universal knowledge and wisdom. Cocoa came into vogue in Europe as a liqueur from the sixteenth century on, often being drunk through a thick layer of cream floating on the surface. Chalmers 1528 Chocolate Port commemorates the year in which chocolate was supposedly first bought to Europe from the Americas. Chocolate and Port are a compatible and often romantic combination. With this product from Chalmers, full flavoured, oak matured tawny port is blended with dark chocolate. An experience unto itself in the world of wine with no need to make dessert!
Tasting Note: Pale amber with tawny overtones and a pale olive tinge. The nose reveals generous raisins with dark chocolate end notes with well integrated oak adding character. Rich, warming raisin fruit characters emerge on the palate followed by a subtle oak and dark chocolate finish.

Muscat and Muscadelle (Tokay) are as original to Australia as kangaroos. Nowhere else in the world are the grapes treated this way, and the Chambers' family have been making wines in Rutherglen since 1858.
As there is no irrigation the vines, some 90 years old, produce low tonnages with wonderful concentrated flavour. This sweet wine is full of complex fruit flavours and once opened, does not deteriorate and will allow months of sipping pleasure. Serve as an aperitif or after dinner drink.

Expect raspberry fruit flavours laced with refreshing herbs, exotic spice and a gentle bitterness. The latest bottling of the NV Amontillado was marked as L211105, so bottled the 5th of November 2011. It has an amber color and a saline nose with notes of nuts, varnish, dry orange peel and some iron. The palate is pungent and finished with a salty and bitter twist. It has 21% alcohol and 8.1 grams of acidity and 6.5 of sugar, but it feels bone dry, balanced and concentrated through evaporation. This saca consists of 2,000 half-liter bottles.

The base wine is a blend of Oloroso with an average age of some 15 years and Pedro Ximénez with 6 in which no fewer than 32 botanicals are macerated. Legadi Zibibbo is a fortified wine made from Zibibbo grapes (Muscat d’Alessandria) grown in the vineyards of Trapani. The fruit is hand-harvested in mid-September, and immediately pressed for a short fermentation, before being fortified with neural spirit to retain the natural sugar of the grapes. This wine boasts a rich fruit aroma of figs and yellow peach, complemented by hints of orange blossom and sweet spices.

This unique liqueur wine, possessing the aroma and sweetness of honey, matures in oak wood for an extended period and has a tradition and history behind it. Hesiod, who lived around 735 B.C. described how this wine was made from sun exposed grapes. The island of Cyprus was later a favourite resting ground for Crusades returning from battle and later became a centre for the Knights of the Order of St.John. It was the members of this order who discovered a wine that was been produced in the Troodos Mountains. This wine they named Commanderie after their headquarters, finding it to be not only an excellent drink but also to possess therapeutic properties. Made from the indigenous grape varieties Mavro and Xynesteri, the Commandaria St. Nicholas remains a traditional wine of Cyprus and one of the oldest traded wines in the world.
The distinctive honey sweet flavors of ETKO Commandaria earned it a rating of 88 from Wine Spectator. According to Kim Marcus, columnist for Wine Spectator, the Commandaria is, “rich and sweet, with an amber color. Mouth coating, with cream and Sherry-like aromas and flavors dominated by baked pear, caramel and spice. A light swirling immediately awakens the aromatics to offer blackberry, Seville orange marmalade, blueberries and dried fig – complex and quite compelling. There is real mineralite within this bouquet that, returning after 30 minutes, offers alluring ocean spray scents rolling in off the ocean. The palate is medium-bodied with a velvety-smooth opening that belies the fine, structured tannins underneath. It clams up a little towards the finish, shuts the lid tight and consequently there is the sensation of less persistency here compared to the Taylor’s or Fonseca. But Croft has a knack of filling out with bottle age and becomes both gentle and generous with the passing years. Tasted May 2013.
