In May 2021, the famous model, Kendall Jenner announced the launch of her 818 Tequila range via an Instagram post. She became the latest celebrity to launch a spirits brand, joining the likes of George Clooney and Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson. Like most tequila brands, the range includes three variants; a Blanco, Reposado and a top-of-the-line Anejo, all bottled at 40%. They're produced in a traditional manner under contract at La Cofradia distillery in Jalisco, home to over sixty tequila labels. Jenner's foray has been polarising, both in terms of the liquid in the bottles and accusations that her wealth means she's diverting attention and resources from smaller producers who lack her pull. The tequila itself is produced from Blue Weber agaves harvested at peak maturity (seven years) then cooked in brick ovens for 40 hours, before being subjected to the tahona extraction method - a large stone wheel that crushes the agave. Taste-wise, the consensus is these are light, approachable styles that don't make heavy demands on drinker's palates.

Other reviews... “Rested in oak barrels for a fresh vanilla roundness,” an unusual step for a blanco — though this has apparently been filtered to remove any remaining color. Very sweet on the nose; the “vanilla roundness” is front and center, alongside pastry cream and some strawberry notes. The only the barest hint of agave here, a clear move to appease KUWTK fans who might be put off by a punchy, herbaceous blanco. The palate follows suit: Creamy, with lots of vanilla and more red berry notes. A tinge of earthy greenery on the finish is about as mild as could be. There’s nothing really wrong with it as it stands, but it doesn’t taste much like tequila. If you told me this was a vanilla-flavored vodka I would have believed you. - drinkhacker.com

    Calle 23 Blanco 100% Agave Tequila (750ml)
    Jalisco, MEXICO
    $99. 99
    Bottle
    $1199.88 Dozen
    ABV: 40%
    Closure: Cork

Calle 23 is the brainchild of French Bio-chemist Sophie Decobecq. Her expertise in her studied field has lead her to experiment with various yeast strains, in turn creating a range of distinguishable tequilas. Agave is grown and produced in Zapotlanejo, the highlands of Jalisco where they are slowly cooked in stainless steel autoclaves for a period 7 hours. The cooked agave is then distilled in stainless steel pot stills to approximately 54%. Reposado and Anejo styles are aged for 8 and 16 months respectively in Jack Daniels and Heaven Hill ex-bourbon casks until being bottled with distillery well water. The blanco presents a clear slightly glycerous appearance. Complexity unfolds with time in the glass; black pepper, fresh lime, salt and herbaceous / fresh horseradish like notes are wrapped in a soft, smokey blanket. In the mouth, a mild peppery attack leads into medium dry, intensely herbal, sappy, pine-like flavours that quickly dry out. Gently warming spirit. Excellent balance. Persistent, clean, dry, cut crass and white pepper aftertaste. A distinctively green, gently peppery blanco. 40% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... Aromas of dried fruits, roasted peppers and root vegetables, and delicate spices. Soft and silky with a dry-yet-fruity light-to-medium body. Cinnamon bark, citrus zest, minerals, straw, and chili peppers twinkle on the long, warming finish. Nice vibrancy.

    Casamigos Blanco Tequila (700ml)
    Jalisco, MEXICO
    $99. 99
    Bottle
    $1199.88 Dozen
    ABV: 40%

A new celebrity affiliated brand launched by George Clooney and Rande Gerber. The tequila is produced at the same distillery that makes well-known labels 'Avion' and 'Clase Azul'. Casamigos' first advertisement made an impact, featuring Clooney, Cindy Crawford, Kevin Bacon and others found in bed together after a night of imbibing, an image that sums up the 'relaxed' style of the collection. Aged for two months, the blanco pours with a clear / silvery blush. Intense aromas are waxy, peppery in the openings developing crushed chilli, mustard seed, dill pickle and semi-ripe pineapple. Entry is surprisingly rounded, vanilla-accented with beeswax, brine and a sappy agave, peppercorn burst to finish. Pineapple, gelato and light butter menthol lozenge aftertaste. Ends light, keenly balanced and fresh. Very accessible, this edges towards reposado. 40% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... Co-owned by actor George Clooney and nightlife impresario Rande Gerber, this blanco is smooth and light. The aromas are restrained, but on the palate look for mild agave sweetness backed by lemon zest, ginger and white pepper sparks, plus a candied lemon-peel note on the gentle exit. 92 points - winenthusiast.com

Produced from organically grown agaves. Bright, glossy and crystal clear. Captivates with its assertive, salty perfume that reveals exotic oily, smokey agave and vanilla notes. Don Julio Blanco 100% Agave Tequila (750ml)
    Jalisco, MEXICO
    $119. 99

    $1439.88 Dozen
    ABV: 38%
    Closure: Cork

At the age of 17, Don Julio Gonzalez opened his first tequila distillery in 1942 in Atotonilco el Alto in Jalisco. His name has been synonymous with luxury tequila ever since. The distillery hand selects every one of its blue agaves at the peak of their sweetness and ripeness—waiting up to 12 years before harvesting. Rich clay soils and larger planting spaces help to ensure maximum nutrition and sunlight, resulting a sweeter Agave for premium tequila production. The Agaves are then slowly cooked in masonry ovens at Don Julio's 'La Primavera' Distillery, where the juice that is obtained is subsequently double distilled. Clear in colour, the bouquet evokes Marzipan, baked citrus, brine, dill and green peppercorn aromas (almost like opening a fresh jar of Polish pickles). The semi sweet palate offers spicy, smokey roast pineapple and salty capsicum flavours . Warm, glycerous, silky mouthfeel. Finishes salty and clean with white pepper and citrus aftertaste. A complex and seamlessly integrated blanco.

Other reviews... This is how blanco Tequila should smell with unadorned, raw, but fetching peppery/dill-like aromas, scents of lanolin, palm oil, sand, minerals and slate. The palate entry is semi-dry, intensely sap-like and honeyed; at mid palate the taste profile displays a satiny texture and a robust, herbal, mildly salty flavor. 38% Alc/Vol. 96-100  - wineenthusiast.com

Clear. Pure stewed prune and baked pineapple agave aromas. A smooth and supple entry leads to an oily dry-yet-fruity medium-to-full body of dried tropical fruits, roasted yellow pepper, and white pepper flavors. Finishes with a nice blend of subtle powdered sugar dusted dried pineapples and wet minerals. Classy and pure. International Review of Spirits Award: Silver Medal

El Caballito Cerrero Blanco 46 Chato Agave Spirit (750ml)
    Amatitan, MEXICO
    $145. 00
    Bottle
    $1740.00 Dozen
    ABV: 46%
The Caballito Cerrero (“The one that doesn`t need horseshoes”) was created in 1950, by Don Alfonso Jimenez Rosales after he separated from Tequila Herradura, a company of which he was a founding partner. Establishing it in the Santa Rita factory built in 1873 by his father-in-law, Maximiano Hernandez Orozco, his son Claudio continued to produce tequila Caballito Cerrero until his death. It was not until 2018 that his descendants (the 15th generation of “vino mezcal” producers) took the decision to produce "Caballito Cerrero" as a standalone agave distillate, distinct from tequila and mezcal. The family ceased calling their product tequila, in defiance of the industrialization of the category, and as a mark of respect to the agave distillation traditions within the Amatitán region. The Jimenez family use only mature agaves, including both Azul, or Blue Weber (A. tequilana) and other varieties such as Chato (A. angustifolia), just as their ancestors have for fifteen generations. Caballito Cerrero remains a tiny distillery but one that has consistently been regarded as one of Mexico's finest. The relative elusiveness of their products has given them a 'cult' status among aficionados worldwide.

This expression employs the rare but traditional agave varietal "Chato" (Angustifolia). This squat agave is not uncommon in the valley around Guadalajara and would have been used in distilleries to produce spirit prior to the tequila "normas" being established in the middle of the 20th century. Chato's character is generally described as more vegetal than the Blue Weber. Here the aroma opens like an Anejo Tequila, hinting at honeycomb and caramel with air contact revealing more green agave character as well as hints of papaya. It's light to medium bodied, silky and graceful with low-key waxy, briney flavours followed by fruit bread; There's a resemblance to a fine barrel aged grappa, but it gets more distinctively agave-like through the aftertaste. The result is a fascinating glimpse into what the spirit of Mexico might have tasted like two or three hundred years ago. 46% Alc./Vol.

El Tequileno Blanco Platinum Tequila (750ml)
    Jalisco, MEXICO
    $114. 99
    Bottle
    $1379.88 Dozen
    ABV: 40%

Rested for 14 days in American oak barrels before bottling, El Tequilino's premium blanco boasts lifted, fresh, saline aromas of chillie dill pickles, olive brine, green tomato salsa, white pepper and dried herbs that continue onto the medium bodied palate, with potpuorri, sea salt and palamino chillie suggested through the finish. Try it in a Batanga cocktail with a pinch of salt. 40% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... El Tequileno is an affordable brand founded by Don Jorge Salles Cuervo in 1959 that bills itself as “Mexico’s best-kept secret.” It’s made from blue agave from Los Altos de Jalisco (the Highlands) and volcanic spring water from El Volcan de Tequila. Unusually, this blanco (sometimes billed as Platinum on the label) is rested for 14 days in American oak barrels before bottling. If there’s any color to the finished spirit, it’s virtually impossible to see, coming across as nearly transparent. There’s an earthiness to the nose that makes me think more of Lowlands agave than Highlands, though it also hits with aromas of pepper, charred beef, and a clear salty note. The palate is fairly creamy but quite herbal — not so much vegetal as it is informed by fresh rosemary and sage — with a buttery character tempering any heat on the palate. This chewiness on the tongue seems clearly driven by the two weeks of resting in oak, and a more vanilla-scented, wood-forward note emerges on the lasting finish. I get hints of jasmine and coconut on the back end, if you give it time. It’s solid enough stuff at this price level for a 100% agave tequila, though I have to say the oak resting feels like a bit of a cheat for a blanco. - drinkhacker.com

This is the entry level Blanco from El Tequileno, as opposed to the 'Platinum' premium version. Because it's a blend of 70% agave and 30% Piloncillo (handmade unrefined Mexican sugar cane), it's classified as a 'Mixto' style. The estate uses Blue Agave from the Los Altos region of Jalisco combined with the mineral rich water sourced from El Volcan de Tequila. 40% Alc./Vol.

Crafted at the San Nicolas distillery in Arandas, the Los Altos (Highlands) region of Jalisco; Espolon Tequila is made from 100% agave, produced in Blanco (unaged) and Reposado styles. Piñas (the heart of the agave) are cooked for 18 to 20 hours (versus the industry average of 12) with the distillation process lasting 5½ hours (versus the industry average of 3½), with the intention of producing a richer and more intense flavour. The striking packaging is inspired by classic nineteenth century artwork, featuring the iconic rooster, a symbol of Mexican national pride. An eye catching addition to any bar. When choosing your tequila, look for '100% agave', an essential bit of information vital for a great and true tequila experience. Inferior products such as 'Jose Cuervo Especial' can consist of as little as 50% agave, with the balance a mixture of corn syrup and grain alcohol, leaving you with a nasty hangover the next day.

Espolon Blanco has a crystal clear, silvery appearance. First pass reveals a perfumed bouquet of herbaceous, green capsicum that gets more like fresh cut horseradish, less the heat. Later, undertones of candle wax and smoke are evident making for an impressively complex aroma. The palate is light to medium bodied and a little broad and sweet. Waxy, briny and with a delicate twist of white pepper. Concludes dry, light and relatively short. Overall the palate lacks the vibrancy and zest we look for in Blanco Tequila. 40% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews: Clear. Aromas of waxy honeycomb, dried tropical fruits, delicate pickling spices, and creamy meringue. Super smooth and silky with a dryish medium-to-full body. Graceful tropical flower blossom, dates, minerals, and subtle roasted pepper notes illuminate the finish. Incredibly clean, pure and elegant.

Tequila Fortaleza (meaning “Fortitude”) is the same Tequila released under the “Los Abuelos” label, produced at the distillery of the same name - “Fortaleza” is the export label that developed due to a trademark conflict with a Rum with the name "Abuelos" that was already being distributed in the USA.

Located in the town of Tequila, Jalisco, Los Abuelos are a quality orientated producer rooted in traditions established centuries ago. Their tequilas are produced from estate grown, 100% stone milled agave. A brick oven with meter thick walls cooks the agave for thirty six hours. The crushed agave is then washed with mountain water from the Volcan de Tequila to separate the pulp from the woody fibres to create the 'mosto'. The woody fibres of the agave are removed at this time, and taken to the fields to use as compost. The agave mosto is then naturally fermented for five days in small wood vats, and then double distilled using small, labor-intensive copper pot stills.

The distinctive bottles are hand-blown in Tonala, Jalisco by artisan glassmakers and the bottle tops, artisan designed and hand made. They represent the harvested heart of the agave.

Tasting note: Flawless crystal clear appearance with a silvery blush. Offers an intense, salty, manzanilla-like bouquet that also includes dill pickle and chilli pepper. The intensity drops after several minutes exposure as the profile changes to grilled pineapple, straw and white pepper. A water like entry builds into a concentrated, fresh, vibrant palate with flavours of unripe pineapple, beeswax and white pepper accompanied by a delicious salty surge. Finishes gently warming, squeaky clean, fresh and manzanilla-dry with excellent length. Top notch Blanco that displays terrific vitality and poise. 40% Alc./Vol.

The Herradura collection of tequila's are amongst Mexico's finest. Their Silver tequila is aged in white oak barrels for less than 59 days with the average being 45 days resulting in a lightly coloured, full bodied blanco style.

Other reviews... The bouquet is marvelously animated with vibrant herbal and earthy aromas of dill, green pepper, mace, hemp and tilled earth. Classic Cocktail: The Margarita
The Margarita has suffered terribly in modern times. In an effort to make it hip, quick, trendy, and cheap it has been bastardized far worse then any cocktail before it. Whether it is the use of inferior (or just plain wrong) ingredients, or commercially made mixes, the common Margarita these days tastes more like a ‘Limeade’ with a splash of orange juice than it does the delectable cocktail that it once was. A true Margarita is made from three ingredients: Tequila, Cointreau (Triple Sec), and fresh squeezed Lime Juice. Like any cocktail, the true art comes in arriving at the proper ratio of the ingredients in order to present a balance of the flavours. Arguably the best ratio for a Margarita is 3:2:1. Three parts Tequila, 2 parts Cointreau, and 1 part freshly squeezed lime juice.

    60ml Jose Cuervo Clasico Tequila
40ml Cointreau or other Triple Sec Liqueur
    20ml Lime Juice
Method: Shake with ice. Strain into a cocktail glass. Optional: You can prepare the cocktail glasss by miostening the rim with lime juice, and then dipping it into coarse salt. - notes partially sourced from www.drinkboy.com

Produced by Carlos Camarena, a third generation Tequilero (the man behind legendary brands lik El Tesoro and Tapatio) in conjunction with Tomas Estes, who is credited with bringing the first bottle of Tequila to Europe. Taking a 'terroir' approach, these are reportedly the first tequilas to be 'vintage' dated, noting the year of harvest and location of the Agave plants that the spirit was derived from. The idea is to express the personality of the soil and climate. Each vintage is a limited run.

Ocho means “eight” and everything about the brand references the number. Ocho came from the eighth sample created by Carlos for Tomas. The agaves ripen for eight years and it takes eight kg of agave to make a litre of Ocho tequila. Production of Ocho blanco takes eight days. Carlos even has eight brothers and sisters and the family is in their eighth decade of producing tequila! The list goes on...

Tasting note: [Puerta Del Aire Estate tasted] Clear. Superb aromatics include salted lime, dill pickle, green peppercorns, mustard seed with air contact adding grilled pineapple, pencil shavings, rosemary and sappy / fruity agave like notes. Ends fresh, juicy-yet-dry, with agave, brine and white pepper in the aftertaste. Leaps out of the glass. Outstanding. 40% Alc./Vol.

In 1989 two visionaries, John Paul DeJoria and entrepreneur Martin Crowley formed The Patrón Spirits Company with the singular goal of producing “the best tequila in the world”. Under the stewardship of DeJoria and former Seagram executive Ed Brown, a new distilling factory was built in Jalisco. With the guidance of the renown master distiller Francisco Alcarez, the new factory was designed as a state-of-the-art complex but with a core steeped in tradition. Patrón Tequila has since become the world’s number one ultra premium tequila, outselling it’s nearest competitor by eight times in the United States alone. In 2004 Patrón Tequila was recognized with the American Academy of Hospitality Sciences Five Star Diamond Award. Patrón is the first spirits brand ever to receive this prestigious honor. The Company’s headquarters are in Las Vegas Nevada.

Jalisco, Mexico is considered the most ideal region for the production of the Blue Agave plant. The climate is warm and the soil is clayey with high ferrous oxide content, resulting in Agaves of higher "honey" or sugar content. Patrón tequilas are made from premium selected Weaber Tequilana Blue Agave plants. The trimmed heart of a premium agave plant resembles a large "pineapple" and takes eight to nine years to reach maturity. There are certain "bitter" sprouts which must be carefully removed from the "pineapple" before steam baking. Few distilleries still take the care and time to remove these sprouts as Patron does. After harvesting the Agave’s, the next step in Patron’s production is the slow vapour steam baking in masonry ovens. This steam baking takes approximately thirty six hours (most tequila factories fast cook the pineapples caramelizing the outside and leaving much of the inside under cooked, bitter and starchy.) The cooked agave is then carefully torn and placed in a shallow stone milling pit and slowly macerated by large stone milling wheels. Crushing in this fashion leaves the sweet juice freely absorbed in the mescal fibers. The juice filled fiber is then placed in wooden fermentation vats. Once in the fermentation vats the juice is naturally adjusted and yeast added to encourage fermentation. This fermentation lasts for sixty to seventy two hours. The "must" is then submitted to a double distillation in copper pot sills. The tequila is then balanced to 80 proof (40% alcohol by volume) and fine filtered. Finally, like Patron’s extraordinary commitment to quality, the Patrón bottle is also unique.

Tasted from a 20ml sample, the nose offers soft, seductive aromas open with vanilla custard that takes precedence over hints of candle wax, clove and black pepper. A very soft palate entry builds to a light to medium bodied, off dry profile revealing flavours of unripe pineapple, green peppercorn and beeswax. Gently warming with a slightly oily mouthfeel. Excellent balance. Finishes dry and salty, followed by an aftertaste of unripe pineapple, cigar box and beeswax fade. 40% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... Clear with a silvery cast. Vanilla taffy, dried pineapple-like agave, nutmeg, and mildly earthy aromas. A round, supple entry leads to a dryish light-to medium bodied palate of roasted citrus, dried flowers, dusty mineral, salt, and a touch of cream. Finishes with a white pepper and plum custard-like fade.

Tasting note: Crystal clear with a silvery appearance. Opens with a top note of fairy floss followed by perfumed scents of candle wax, sweet smoke and pepper. Light to medium bodied, the palate is smooth, slightly oily, semi sweet and pleasantly peppery before finishing clean, light and dry. This will certainly win some points if ‘smoothness’ is what you’re looking for in Blanco tequila. Easy drinking. 37% Alc./Vol.

Tasting note: Felipe Camarena produces a small batch tequila at the El Pandillo distillery (NOM 1579). The label began after families based in Idaho, USA, and Jalisco, Mexico, were joined through marriage. This blanco is made from fully mature high altitude Blue Weber Agaves and three water sources - rain, well, and spring water. Agaves are cooked in a stone oven for 22 hours and tahona crushed. Crystal clear, it offers dryish opening scents of linoleum and potpourri, giving way to sweeter notes of grilled capsicum, mustard pickle brine and semi-ripe pear. The style here is silky, elegant and lighter-bodied with moderate pepper heat and pure, attractive juicy agave character through the spicy finish. The aftertaste is dry, minerally and medium long. 40% Alc./Vol.

Notes from the producers... Aroma: Sweet Cooked Agave, minerals, floral notes, citrus, black pepper, apple, and pear. Flavour: Cooked agave, black pepper, citrus, smokiness, and floral notes. The aeration helps create a very lovely rounded mouthfeel. 40% Alc./Vol.

The name translates 'Volcano of my land' and pays homage to a volcano in the Jalisco lowlands. Not surprisingly, the spirit itself, made from 100% Blue Weber agaves aims to capture the character of the region’s nutrient-rich terroir offering medium-fresh aromas of roasted agave, white pepper, menthol lozenges and unripe pineapple. It follows in a sleek, easy-drinking blanco with an effortless delivery and low-definition flavours of brine, grilled pineapple, distant wood smoke, herbal tea and peppercorns, finishing on a drier plateau - bright and spicy with hints of tropical fruits. 40% Alc./Vol. NOM 1523

Other reviews... Shows a classic but complex aroma of baked pineapple, fresh jalapeño, and a blast of sea salt minerality. The palate is on the lighter side with some intermingling of citrus, fine herbs, and tropical fruit. There's an assertive finish of dried pepper and another blast of brine. 40% Alc./Vol.

Founded in the 1900s by the Orendain family and run by Eduardo and Jaime Orendain since 1976, Arette was the name of the horse that under Humberto Mariles won 1 bronze and 2 Gold Olympic medals in jumping. The brand was introduced in 1986 to commemorate this event, which so far are the only Gold medals for Mexico in the discipline.

The house tequilas are made only from 100% Estate grown Agave. The Orendain brothers have always prioritised quality over quantity—they follow their grandfather’s footsteps by preserving the original artisanal practices.

If you're into Tequila, you'll already know that the NOM (or distiller registration number) is the only real way to determine which disitllery produced your tequila. Generally speaking, Tequila brands, as opposed to producers, select a single distillery to work with and they use that brand’s NOM on their bottles. But this is not always the case. And with more than 500 brands produced by about 70 distillers, the brand name is not a reliable indication of who made the product. Knowing the NOM is an absolute necessity if you're keen on ensuring the provenence (and quality) of your purchase. As one of the only companies to offer tequila from several distilleries under a single brand, the ArteNOM venture emphasises this Mexican convention in marketing their tequila, labelling their limited releases as "Seleccion de 1445", for example. The numbers will change from batch to batch depending on the source.

This valley-agave selection (elev. 4,200’) comes from El Arenal, where Ramón Sandoval carefully distills this delicious un-aged tequila from certified-organic agave. The valley growing conditions lend this spirit a distinctive herbaceous flavor with warm aromatics, and a fresh, vegetal bouquet with intriguing notes of cacao and subtle spice.

This 100% agave tequila is distilled and bottled by the Vivanco family at their El Ranchito distillery, on the edge of their 800-acre mountainside field in Arandas. The agaves are grown without pesticides.

Simon Ford of the 86 Co describes this tequila as smashing you in the face with its exaggerated agave flavours. It is a blanco, but has spent up to 60 days resting in stainless steel before bottling. It's also slightly overproof at 43% alcohol, which is a pleasant departure from the norm. Another plus is the bottle - designed for ease of use by bartenders it includes a scale with measures in fluid ounces and litres to allow bars greater inventory control and batching of cocktails.

Tasting note: Crystal clear with a silvery blush. Perfumed and sweet opening aromas of mustard pickle, roast peppers and beeswax. A whisper soft entry is followed by a concentrated burst of juicy agave and dustings of white pepper to finish dry, briney, waxy and with the controlled pepper heat persisting into a lengthy herbal/mustard seed fade. Agree or disagree as to its number one status, this is one all-round superb package.

There are those who believe Casa Noble Crystal is unrivalled in its category, an opinion that certainly resonates with the distillery's production philosophy: Recognising that one of the most important factors in a great tequila is the agave plant, Casa Noble are not only distillers but growers too. Their agaves are certified organic, farmed and harvested at 10-14 years of age from their own estate after meeting strict requirements for water and sugar content. The agaves are then slow-cooked (steam roasted) for thirty six hours in stone ovens followed by a 3-5 day natural fermentation and a triple distillation (most other tequila is distilled twice). Three stainless steel pot stills with internal copper plates are employed. Unlike most other brands, lightly toasted French oak barrels are given preference over x Bourbon. The commitment to quality extends from the inside out, with the tequilas finished in glass decanters (reportedly hand blown), adorned with an embossed metal label and heavy ball-stopper.

Tasting note: Clear. Pure, lifted and engaging aromas of brine, dill pickle, roast capsicum and white pepper developing with crushed chilli, grilled pineapple and sappy / resiny notes in later passes. Salty entry follows through with flavours of chilli, beeswax, white pepper and sappy agave with a creamy, warming finish and excellent length. Effortlessly combines the body and elegance of great vodka with the vibrancy and exoticism associated with blanco tequila. 40% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews...Clear with a gun metal cast. Roasted red pepper, mature cheese, and marinating spice aromas with a fair amount of vapor and a touch of vanilla. A smooth, round entry leads to an off-dry medium-to full-bodied palate with sweet tropical fruit, black pepper, and salty, grilled pepper flavors. Finishes with a long fade of spicy heat and sweet agave fruit. Great texture and very true agave flavours. 40% Alc./Vol.

Though not technically certified as either tequila or mezcal, this may be as close as you can get to the unique spirit that made ‘Vino de Mezcal de Tequila’ famous in the late 19th century. Employing 100% Agave Azul 'Agave tequilana', (aka 'Blue Weber', the only variety certified by the CRT for use in modern tequila), the agave hearts are cooked in the same brick ovens the family has used since 1873. Released only as a Plata (or Silver), under the designation 'Destilado de Agave', it smells like a tequila essence, offering dense, pure sappy, herbal-agave complexity, evolving with notes of dill pickle, peppercorns, crushed mustard seed and pineapple husk. Loaded with succulent fruity agave character, this dry, minerally medium bodied distillate finishes juicy, peppery, salivating and prolonged. In short, a first class spirit that's as delicious as it is historic. 46% Alc./Vol.

For years, the only way to sample this was to visit the distillery. Stone crushed, estate bottled and released at a 'still strength', Fortaleza's high ABV edition promises a more punchy and pure Tequila experience.

Other reviews... The savory, spicy aroma hints at fresh tomato. The drying, astringent palate opens with a savory, herbal blast, rounding into sun-dried tomato earthiness, mouthwatering lemon peel and bright lemon-pepper on the long finish. The producer chose to go with the extra-proof “still strength” because “this is how Tequila was enjoyed over 125 years ago by my Great Great Grandfather.” The bottle, topped with a hand-painted agave piña, was hand-blown by bottle artisans in Mexico.

“Almost like you’re getting Fortaleza Blanco direct from the still… actually, you are. This is a great blanco in its purest form.” - Grover Sanschagrin / Founder, Tequila Matchmaker

Notes from the producer... Aromas of fruit, baked fully-ripened agave, green olive, and earth are invitingly present. Slightly brighter and a touch more rustic than the regular blanco, the accents of butter, olive, earth, black pepper, and vegetal qualities in the flavor are enhanced because it comes straight from our small copper pot still, without adding water prior to bottling. 46% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... Though it’s a blanco, this tequila is rested in stainless steel for 60 days before bottling, a common practice for higher-end white spirits. It doesn’t take long to see what the fuss is all about: This is instantly an expressive and engaging tequila that quickly becomes hard to put down. A gentle nose expresses notes of white pepper, lime juice, and a touch of coconut husk. Tropical and a little sweet, it’s mild and enveloping from the start. The palate keeps perfectly on message: Light sweetness paired with citrus quickly evokes a note of limeade, then moves into a light sprinkle of baking spice, green herbs, lemongrass, and another grind of white pepper. This is definitely not your father’s Cuervo, and it’s miles away from a brash, alcohol-driven experience. Enduringly subtle, the tequila feels meticulously crafted and deftly balanced, light on its feet but bursting with fresh flavors. Sip it, mix with it, whatever. Just buy it. Bottled Dec 15 2020. - drinkhacker.com

Although 'KAH' means "Life" in Mayan, the striking packaging for these tequilas is inspired by a 3000 year old Mexican celebration known as the Day of the Dead (Dia de los Muertos). A death/rebirth festival, it honors deceased loved ones. The skulls containing KAH tequila reference traditional Calaveras (skulls made from sugar) used in Dia de los Muertos rituals of centuries gone by. Like Northern European 'Vanitas' paintings, each hand-painted bottle reminds one of mortality, and doing so encorouges us to celebrate life (with KAH Tequila in-hand, of course!) No two bottles are the same.

But while the brand has attracted a lot of attention for its Day of the Dead presentation, what's the tequila itself like? Thankfully the gimmick is only skin deep. Reviews have been favourable. We look forward to tasting these tequilas soon, all of which are certified organic.

The Partida distillery produces 100% estate grown blue agave tequilas that are critically acclaimed and sought after by today's bar scene.

All agaves are grown on volcanic soils at the estate and harvested at 10 years for maximum flavour. The cooking process involves the use of stainless steel ovens, contrary to the stone ovens used at most other establishments. Stainless steel acts as a pressure cooker, converting agave's carbohydrates into fermentable sugars resulting in a smoother and cleaner agave flavour (according the company website anyway).

Finally, maturation of the Reposado (aged 6 months), Anejo (aged 18 months) and Extra Anejo 'Elegante' (aged 36 - 40 months) take place in first-fill Jack Daniels American oak barrels.

Porfidio 100% Agave Plata Silver Tequila (750ml)
    Jalisco, MEXICO

    $1079.88 Dozen

Anticipating the expanding export market for 100% agave tequilas, the Porfidio Tequila company was created by Austrian entrepreneur Martin Grassl. Aiming at the super-premium market, Grassl employed techniques learned from his experience in the apple-brandy industry to create a world class tequila experience. The brand has become famous for its hand-blown bottle which actually contains a small glass cactus. Although the cactus plant has nothing to do with the production of tequila, the bottle has received numerous awards for it's beautiful and innovative design. Grassl himself, has adopted the pen name of "Don Ponciano Porfidio" to give his product a Mexican character, as well as to poke fun at the snobbery of some tequila makers. Regardless of the animosity in the industry over Grassl’s methods, Porfidio has drawn considerable attention to tequila and its presence has helped the sales and promotion of other super-premium brands.

Porfidio don't make their own tequila: they buy what they consider the best from other manufacturers. Grassl rents five distilleries from several weeks to a few months every year, replacing its employees with his own crew to make his product. It may be difficult for consumers who want to know which distillery is producing their favorite Porfidio at any given time, with the tequilas having been produced by the distilleries who make El Viejito, Arette, Tres Alegres Compadres, Regional, and J. R. Reyes tequilas. Porfidio’s success has upset many producers who feel the brand gets inappropriate attention, despite coming from unnamed sources. Nevertheless, 60% of Porfidio's sales are in Mexico. The company remains one of a handful to offer a single-barrel añejo, rather than a blend (the other is Cuervo's Reserva) which has also become the most successful product in the Porfidio portfolio.

Porfidio 100% agave is triple-distilled and was rated the top Silver to try by Bon Appetit Magazine 39.5% Alc./Vol. Very Limited Stocks. No tasting notes available.

The tequila segment continues to expand - even pioneering brands like Patron are being challenged to innovate. Three decades ago, they were one of the first to lift tequila's countrified profile to the realm of super premium spirits. Hundreds of brands have since followed suit. The competition is now fierce at every level.

Tequila afficionados looking for the latest thrill should enjoy the new artisan, higher proof alternatives from Patron, named after the Spanish word for “rock” (roca), "...a reference to the giant volcanic-stone wheel traditionally used to crush the cooked agave". Originally, manufacturers beat the cooked agave pinas with mallets to break them up once they were soft and cool. Then they moved to the tahona, or grinding wheel, operated by mules, oxen or horses (nowadays more likely by a tractor). At Patron, a two-ton volcanic stone tahona is employed.

Patron marketing chief Lee Applbaum believes the process retains more of the agave's pungent, sweet and vegetal flavour. He adds, "It also helps that Roca is made by fermenting both juice and some of the agave fiber together; the fiber, which is later separated, adds a certain richness."

A celebrity affiliated Tequila endorsed by Australian model, Jennifer Hawkins and produced by Francisco Beckmann at the Tierra de Agaves distillery (his family founded the 'Jose Cuervo' brand). Hawkins has partnered in the venture with Tim Freeburn and Shane McKillen, the team originally behind New Zealand's 42 Below vodkas. She adds, "We find that if we have tequila, the night takes unexpected turns - it's more spontaneous and fun. It kind of elevates you."

Tasting note: Clear. Yields pungent aromas of salted lime, black pepper, green tomato salsa, caramelised pineapple and beeswax. A fresh, medium-bodied attack with racy flavours of vibrant agave, salted pineapple, mineral and pepper and a brisk lime juice, brine and beeswax aftertaste. An attractive middle-weight blanco for all applications. 40% Alc./Vol.
