    23rd Street's entry into the citrus gin segment features the trending Yuzu fruit, also the inspiration for several Japanese gins. The aim is to retain its delicious sweet, sour and bitter flavours in harmony with the freshness of juniper. In this example, fruit is gathered from a single Riverland orchard. Both highly fragrant Yuzu and Buddha's Hand fruit are incorporated whole, together with hand-peeled rind from Cara Cara and Blood Oranges. Added to the mix are juniper, chamomile and coriander plus Australian natives like cinnamon myrtle, pink peppercorn and strawberry gum. Suitably, the Artwork for this limited edition was created by local South Australian Artist, Claire Ishino. The inspiration being Japanese sunsets blending with the Australian landscape, and of course the Riverland Yuzu fruit. It's a simple but refreshingly vibrant spirit with a nice citrus tang and a spicy finish that will suit thirst-quenching G&Ts or enjoying straight up over ice.     Twenty Third Street Distillery is the new incarnation of a century-old landmark at Renmark, in South Australia’s Riverland. Originally built by Chateau Tanunda in 1914 to take advantage of burgeoning local grape harvests, the distillery had a roller-coaster history, surviving a series of takeovers and mergers until it ceased production in 2002.

    When a pair of disused, South Australian-built copper pot stills were found at Berri Estate, a small team became determined to bring them back to life. The 7,500 litre capacity stills had their own story to tell, being x Hardy’s - at one stage responsible for producing the iconic Black Bottle brandy. Years of hard work running restorations and relocations has found these antiques once again fully operational at the original 23rd St premises producing brandy, whisky and gin.

    Tasting note: Made using ten botanicals including locally grown mandarines. Dazzling clarity with a brilliant silvery blush. Nosing finds medium-fresh aromas of juniper, lemon gelato, peppercorns and dried herbs. A light bodied, soft-textured gin with brisk flavours of piney-juniper, citrus peel, white pepper, liquorice root and suggestions of lime juice in the aftertaste. Clean but short.     The powerfully scented Akitasugi Cedar Gin falls into the range of Conifer-driven gin bouquets, presenting with a drier, woody-juniper quality suggesting crushed pine shoots, pine sap and hints of new sawn soft woods. Well balanced at 46%, the pine and juniper-led profile is backed up by citrus and hints of damp cedar, finishing creamy-yet-fresh, peppery and well integrated with lingering pine and cool mint. This isn't overtly 'woody' as you might expect (cedar leaves are amongst the five botanicals), rather it naturally compliments the familiar conifer notes experienced via juniper in many other gins.

    Other reviews... Akitasugi Gin is from Akitakenhakko Kogyo, developed as a partially-crowdfunded industry-academic-government project. It uses Akitasugi (cedar) leaves and five other botanicals. The refreshing "forest bathing" aroma is its signature, and the packaging is quite attractive... Akitasugi Gin is extremely fresh, and the first impression is the fantastic progression of the aroma. It noses of refreshing lemon, coriander seed, and cinnamon. On the tongue it’s soft and sweet, and well-balanced. It’s as though you’re taking a walk in a meadow just after the rain, or forest bathing, like a breath of nature itself. Cedar leaves had me thinking it would be a bit grassier or more raw, but that’s not the case. Take it straight or on the rocks, but putting it in a cocktail may be a waste.     The newest Gin from this progressive Kyneton distillery is Animus’s riff on a London Dry Gin. Compared to their overproof core range of Gins, Octet lands at a more traditional 40% abv and is heavily pitched with juniper as opposed to the more citrusy profile of the Macedon Dry and friends. Here, the distillers have worked with eight botanicals, hence the name Octet. Alongside lemon, coriander seed and angelica, the inclusion of local, hand-harvested fig leaf and locally sourced first-press extra virgin olive oil speaks of Animus’s deep connection to their place. The result tastes as good as it looks. As always, the high standard of Animus’s ingredients and labour-intensive attention to detail are on full display. Expect big juniper flavours juxtaposed with sweet and spicy fig leaf, while the extra virgin olive oil provides a herbaceous, grassy edge and unctuous, silky weight. As always, the Animus team have threaded the needle well; it’s a beautifully balanced and flavourful Gin crafted with the trade in mind and sits comfortably in ‘first-pour’ position.

    Founded in 2015 by four friends, Animus Distillery soon outgrew its Fitzroy origins and is now located in central Victoria. Triple filtered, 100% Australian grain spirit is used and many of the botanicals (all vapour pressed in a 50L copper still) are grown on the property. During production botanical baskets are changed every few litres and the final ABV is kept relatively high in order to maximise flavours.

    Tasting note: Clear. Opening sniffs are moderately peppery / spirity with floral-yet-earthy scents of dried herbs (tarragon / lavender / thyme?) and white pepper over background citrus oils. Air contact adds green juniper and lime peel to the mix. A lively, concentrated, resinous delivery includes early juniper followed by an alluring mixed herb / pepper combo with distinct lime peel, subtle smokey cardamom, cinnamon and saffron at the finish. Concludes mildly oily, tongue tingling and medium long. A robust, full bodied style with a touch of Asia to it. 50% Alc./Vol.

    Formally branded ARTEMIS, Anther's single-estate/seasonal limited edition is a take on the traditional Sloe style. Cherries are sourced from Simon Spreyton of Spreyton's orchards, a small family owned farm in Northern Tasmania. Their fruit is highly sought after in Asian markets where it commands a premium. Cherry season is between mid-December and mid-January, hence this release is annual. Production remains true to this distillery's garagiste approach - 200kg of cherries are stoned by hand (that's about 12,000 cherries!) then placed in holding tanks to macerate in gin. The vivid red liquid is then strained, diluted and a little sugar is added before bottling.

    Tasting note: [27% ABV/Vol. tasted] Slightly cloudy ruby red. Retains a piney, cool mint, lemony freshness through the cherry glace, blackcurrant and dried cranberry notes making for an enticing combination. Creamy cherry nectar and cranberry juice flavours over hints of black pepper and pine with late citrus and herbal tea notes lifting the finish. Nicely done; would love to see it at higher. Expect a light sediment.

    'Artemis' has been renamed 'Anther', after the part of a flower that holds pollen, the essential element for reproduction for botanicals.

    Hand distilled in small batches in Collingwood, Melbourne, this is a juniper forward, classic London dry style, complimented by Australian native botanicals. It's a spicy, savoury gin with a kick of citrus and a long finish of clove, nutmeg and ginger, bottled at a slightly higher strength than your average gin to give the botanicals extra punch. Great in a G&T, a perfect match with Vermouth in a Dry Martini or Negroni, and the spices in Anther emerge in citrus cocktails like the White Lady or Southside.

    Tasting note: Something special captured in the bouquet with a tangible creaminess to the "nose feel"; scents of green cardamom, citrus oils and coriander becoming pine-like with further air contact. Excellent freshness and lift. A creamy, delicately spicy delivery with bright juniper and coriander flavours and a tangy, citrus accented finish.     Notes from the producers... The palate has great precision yet generosity with a strong juniper backbone that is complemented by charred lemon, pineapple and grapefruit. A subtle floral character extends into the finish but is overcome by the pervasive juniper which pushes out into a long, dry and satisfying conclusion.

    Fallout from 'peak gin' continues with yet another premium brand sacrificed. Take advantage!

    Launched in 2017 and created by Master Distiller, Arko Ryynänen and Michelin starred chef, Jaakko Sorsa, the Arctic Blue Gin range is distilled at Nordic Premium Beverages Distillery located in the small village of Ilomantsi in Eastern Finland. The company behind the operation is also the country's oldest winery. Produced using botanicals from the freezing northern regions of Finland, Arctic Blue has been described as "like walking through a wild bilberry forest on a misty morning." Boasting powerful aromas of juniper, liquorice root, grapefruit and tart red berries, it's a medium to full-bodied, vibrant, warming gin with piney juniper, coriander seed, citrus zest and a burst of white pepper adding length and depth to the palate. Wild berries from the forests of North-Karelia are key botanicals, and the berry notes are amplified with minimal water (or tonic), which also turns the gin cloudy white.     ...Arctic Blue Gin delivers an abundance of Nordic character with fragrant pine notes, subtly fruity bilberry and delicate florals. These three pillars of the flavour profile are beautifully supported with undertones of cardamom, coriander seeds and anise, and the mouthfeel is smooth, full and crisp. With Tonic Water, the piney juniper notes are elevated further alongside floral rose, while the bilberry character brings a very gentle sweetness that lingers enjoyably.     The Audemus Distillery is atypical for Cognac. Instead of giant copper pot stills, they operate a small vacuum still out of a living room. Their method is simple and well documented: "By lowering the pressure inside the still, we lower the temperature at which the alcohol will boil – meaning we avoid cooking the botanicals we distill; ensuring the freshness of flavour is maintained." explains co-owner, Miko Abouf. "Distilling is always distilling – evaporating and condensing; nothing more – however, it is a process that is infinitely complex in its simplicity and allows for a myriad of detail."

    Pink Pepper's botanical regime is an interesting mix of juniper, black cardamom, pink peppercorns, cinnamon, honey, vanilla and tonka beans (two others are left secret), however, noticably absent is the second most used botanical in gin - coriander. Vanilla and tonka beans are infused post distillation, bringing added viscosity. Abouaf and co-creator, Ian Spink also say their gin is designed to age, with time in the bottle accenting the sweeter botanical notes.

    "Every botanical we distill is done so individually, with its own specific method." says Abouf. " The maceration time, botanical ratio, alcohol ABV, distillation time, pressure and temperature will all depend on the botanical’s character. If we’re looking for delicate flavours – everything will be done with a gentle touch. If we’re looking for spicier and stronger notes, we will increase the intensity at which we will extract flavour. Juniper is a brilliant example to illustrate this; for Pink Pepper Gin, we distill our juniper at 55 degrees extracting medium spice and intensity. At higher temperatures we’d extract more resiny (terpenic) flavours, at lower temperatures we’d extract greener and more citrusy notes."

    Abouf adds “My aim is to create atypical and awesome spirits. This is all part of the same mentality of boosting the dynamism of the spirits industry, as well as working with the ‘Made in France’ label to make something which is contemporary, (but) built on traditions of the past.”

    Tasting note: [20ml sample] Clear. Fascinating aromas of crushed tea tree leaves, light rosemary, trace tarragon and white pepper. Creamy-yet-concentrated with a burst of bush honey, cinnamon and vanilla bean. Finishes vibrant, dry, pleasingly spicy with flavours of cinnamon doughnut and roasted herbs.     A unique partnership between Lee Medoff and Christian Krogstad of House Spirits Distilling in Portland, Oregon, and mixologist Ryan Magarian of Liquid Kitchen in Seattle. Believed to be the first collaboration of its kind, the gin employs a traditional Dutch copper pot still all-Rye grain base, which brings it's own zest, spiciness and weight compared to corn or wheat base counterparts, combined with a more even handed blending approach (i.e.- less juniper than a London Dry Gin). Other botanicals include cardamom, coriander, lavender, aniseed, saraparilla and dried orange peel.

    Bathtub gin originally referred to any style of homemade spirit made in amateur conditions. The term first appeared in 1920 in the prohibition-era United States, in reference to the poor quality alcohol that was being made in home bath tubs and mixed into cocktails to disguise its coarse flavour. Obviously, this contemporary version is not that sort of gin.

    Bathtub Gin is created using the traditional method of ''cold compounding'' . Very high quality copper pot-still spirit is infused with juniper, orange peel, coriander, cinnamon, cloves and cardamom.

    Production is restricted to ultra-small batches of only 30-60 bottles at a time, and the length of the compounding period is controlled entirely by periodic sampling.

    The result is a gin that's lightly tinted by the botanicals, and with a flavour which is both bold and perfumed all at once. Packaged using brown paper, string and wax, the striking presentation is reminiscent of a Victorian apothecary.

    Tasting note: Bright gold. Lifted and complex bouquet includes piney juniper, lemon cough drops, sweet oregano plus notes of pepper and cardamom. Medium bodied with attractive spicy, woody-juniper flavours and a glowing white pepper, citrus zest, pine and Fisherman's Friend accented finish. A vivacious, drier-style that's easy to like. 43.3% Alc./Vol.

    Big Tree Distillery was established by a gin-loving husband and wife team devoted to bringing you truly home-grown spirits from the Macedon Ranges in Victoria.     Genever (also known as Jenever or Jeniever) Dutch Gin is a full bodied malty spirit that was introduced to the Northern Netherlands in the 16th century by Southern Netherlanders who were fleeing the Spanish inquisition. Although it was originally created for purely medicinal reasons, (juniper berries being of diuretic value in flushing the urinary system) the popularity of this hardy new spirit spread so quickly that it soon was hailed as Holland’s national drink.

    There are two main types of Genever: ‘Oude’ (Old) and ‘Jonge’ (Young). This is not a matter of aging, but of distilling techniques. Jonge Genever can contain no more than 15% malt wine and 10 grams of sugar per litre where Oude Genever must contain at least 15% malt wine but not more than 20 grams of sugar per litre. It is straw-hued, relatively sweet and aromatic.

    This Oude Genever is created by Blankenheym & Nolet distilleries, established 1714 in Schiedam, Holland. A city well known for it's production of Genever.

    An interesting fact when contemplating the use of Genever: in 1862 a celebrity bartender by the name of Jerry Thomas produced the world's first cocktail and bartending book titled "The Bar-tenders Guide or How To Mix Drinks". In there appeared recipes based around four basic cocktail spirits being brandy, rum, whisky and not suprisingly, Genever, the classic predecessor of London Dry Gin. Below is a cocktail recipe of the forgotten 'Holland House', a classic in the era of Jerry Thomas.

    Organically grown “Dancy” and “Imperial” mandarins from the Riverland are the keynote in the latest addition to the Blind Tiger range. Getting the formula just right involved a balancing act. Fruit was peeled and kept in varietal batches. One third was soaked fresh overnight in organic spirit then distilled as a separate run. The remaining peel was air dried above the pot stills and then distilled in small batches. The drier Imperial mandarin distillates were blended together, as were the two Dancy distillates creating two different styles of mandarin concentrates. Selected amounts of both were then blended together with the six botanicals that make up Blind Tiger's London Dry. The resulting gin has a bouquet redolent of mandarin pith and peel, leaning into sharper piney juniper notes after air contact. That's repeated in a wonderfully creamy, round, mouth-filling delivery where the citrus oils take centre stage; Tangy peel and pepper add the perfect amount of zest and zing to the finish. Because the juniper is almost completely phased out, it's more like a curaçao than a gin. A novelty for afficionados, more of a treat for fans of citrus liqueurs. Serve neat over ice, with soda or tonic with a twist of orange peel or mandarin. 42.7% Alc./Vol.

    An Australian gin from a company better known for world class brandies - Angoves. Made using hand harvested, organically grown botanicals including juniper berries, coriander root, angelica root and summer savory, all distilled together in a traditional small still to create an aromatic infusion in organic wheat spirit. As of 2023, this gin sports a new recipe and the label now states "London Dry". An increase in the citrus component provides more lift on the nose and palate. The aromas are pure and true to style with juniper, citrus peel, white pepper and a slightly nutty character following in a medium bodied, creamy delivery, echoing the bouquet and building spicy warmth as it goes. Coriander seed, pepper and tangy peel round off a fresh, lip smacking finish, with piney juniper and more citrus oils in tow. If you're curious about the name, in the 1920’s Prohibition Era a “Blind Tiger” was an establishment known to illegally sell alcohol. Awarded a silver medal at the New York World Wine & Spirits Competition. 42.7% Alc./Vol.

    First batch tasted 2015... Clear. Opens with restrained, drier styled aromas of juniper, lemonade and hints of blackpepper. Light and soft entry builds towards a juniper, citrus peel, coriander seed and pepper accented finish. Ends medium long, with spices balancing the whole and carrying the aftertaste. 88 points
