Twenty Third Street Distillery is the new incarnation of a century-old landmark at Renmark, in South Australia’s Riverland. Originally built by Chateau Tanunda in 1914 to take advantage of burgeoning local grape harvests, the distillery had a roller-coaster history, surviving a series of takeovers and mergers until it ceased production in 2002.

When a pair of disused, South Australian-built copper pot stills were found at Berri Estate, a small team became determined to bring them back to life. The 7,500 litre capacity stills had their own story to tell, being x Hardy’s - at one stage responsible for producing the iconic Black Bottle brandy. Years of hard work running restorations and relocations has found these antiques once again fully operational at the original 23rd St premises producing brandy, whisky and gin.

Tasting note: Made using ten botanicals including locally grown mandarines. Dazzling clarity with a brilliant silvery blush. Nosing finds medium-fresh aromas of juniper, lemon gelato, peppercorns and dried herbs. A light bodied, soft-textured gin with brisk flavours of piney-juniper, citrus peel, white pepper, liquorice root and suggestions of lime juice in the aftertaste. Clean but short. Relaxed easy drinking. 40% Alc./Vol.

Drawing inspiration from Queensland’s hot climate & tropical produce, this release was created to celebrate the opening of the 78˚ Brisbane bar, 'Purple Palm'. Marrying juicy mangoes, pineapples & passionfruit balanced by refreshing citrus, happily, it still tastes like gin rather than a sweet flavoured vodka; there's a judicious handling of the fruits with semi-ripe pineapple and dried mango merely suggested, followed by a subtle pineapple sweetness and a touch of passionfruit sorbet. Remains reserved until the end, leaving you wanting for the next sip. A deliciously accessible summer option for gin lovers. 42% Alc./Vol.

While the distinct notes of a traditional gin are still present, the infusion of leftover cacao husks from the chocolate-making process gives this gin a rich, velvety undertone of bittersweet chocolate. Native wattleseed and Riverland oranges further enhance the profile, lending a subtle sweetness and depth. The rich, smooth taste of dark chocolate takes centre stage, while the bright tone of Jaffa orange provides a refreshing contrast, and the toasted wattleseed lends a nutty undertone. Lending a rich chocolate note to classic cocktails, Chocolate Gin is also great partnered with a light tonic or ginger ale. 42% Alc./Vol.

Champion Gin at the Australian Distilled Spirits Awards 2018.

'Artemis' has been renamed 'Anther', after the part of a flower that holds pollen, the essential element for reproduction for botanicals.

Hand distilled in small batches in Collingwood, Melbourne, this is a juniper forward, classic London dry style, complimented by Australian native botanicals. It's a spicy, savoury gin with a kick of citrus and a long finish of clove, nutmeg and ginger, bottled at a slightly higher strength than your average gin to give the botanicals extra punch. Great in a G&T, a perfect match with Vermouth in a Dry Martini or Negroni, and the spices in Anther emerge in citrus cocktails like the White Lady or Southside.

Tasting note: Something special captured in the bouquet with a tangible creaminess to the "nose feel"; scents of green cardamom, citrus oils and coriander becoming pine-like with further air contact. Excellent freshness and lift. A creamy, delicately spicy delivery with bright juniper and coriander flavours and a tangy, citrus accented finish. Ends medium long, with lingering cool mint / pine and juniper freshness. 44% Alc./Vol.

    Anther Cherry Gin (700ml)
    Victoria, AUSTRALIA
    $94.99$94.99
    Bottle
    $1,139.88Dozen

Formally branded ARTEMIS, Anther's single-estate/seasonal limited edition is a take on the traditional Sloe style. Cherries are sourced from Simon Spreyton of Spreyton's orchards, a small family owned farm in Northern Tasmania. Their fruit is highly sought after in Asian markets where it commands a premium. Cherry season is between mid-December and mid-January, hence this release is annual. Production remains true to this distillery's garagiste approach - 200kg of cherries are stoned by hand (that's about 12,000 cherries!) then placed in holding tanks to macerate in gin. The vivid red liquid is then strained, diluted and a little sugar is added before bottling.

Tasting note: [27% ABV/Vol. tasted] Slightly cloudy ruby red. Retains a piney, cool mint, lemony freshness through the cherry glace, blackcurrant and dried cranberry notes making for an enticing combination. Creamy cherry nectar and cranberry juice flavours over hints of black pepper and pine with late citrus and herbal tea notes lifting the finish. Nicely done; would love to see it at higher. Expect a light sediment.

Archie Rose Fundamental Spirits Straight Dry Gin (700ml)
    Sydney, New South Wales, AUSTRALIA
    $64.99$64.99
    Bottle
    $779.88Dozen
    ABV: 37%

Under the umbrella title of 'Fundamental Spirits', comes a new range of 100% Australian vodka, gin and whisky created as an easy foundation for your favourite drinks. The Straight Dry Gin is cold distilled with sustainably sourced local and Australian ingredients. Botanicals include lemon myrtle, reclaimed orange peel, pink peppercorns, Roman chamomile and strawberry gum. Despite the middling ABV, this maintains decent concentration with a classically 'ginny' profile that strikes a nice balancing act between piney juniper and citrus, closing with a spike of pepper heat that makes it feel closer to 45% instead of 37% Alc./Vol. Be sparing with the mixers, as the gin's character is easily lost.

Notes from the producers... A complex nose with the evolving aromas of sappy pine, fresh thyme and lime zest and an aroma of freshly zested orange in the background with the faintest hint of waxy lemon. The palate has great precision yet generosity with a strong juniper backbone that is complemented by charred lemon, pineapple and grapefruit. A subtle floral character extends into the finish but is overcome by the pervasive juniper which pushes out into a long, dry and satisfying conclusion.

    $1,079.88Dozen
    ABV: 42%

A unique partnership between Lee Medoff and Christian Krogstad of House Spirits Distilling in Portland, Oregon, and mixologist Ryan Magarian of Liquid Kitchen in Seattle. Believed to be the first collaboration of its kind, the gin employs a traditional Dutch copper pot still all-Rye grain base, which brings it's own zest, spiciness and weight compared to corn or wheat base counterparts, combined with a more even handed blending approach (i.e.- less juniper than a London Dry Gin). Other botanicals include cardamom, coriander, lavender, aniseed, saraparilla and dried orange peel.

Chris Carllson of Spiritsreview.com commented: "While taking an old style genever or American style base they have added a deft sense of blending, maceration and distillation to create a truly outstanding Gin. This is the gin to use to resurrect those classic pre-Prohibition American cocktail recipes such as the Alamagoozlum and a host of others, that simply cannot be done with a London Dry...a must have for the discerning gin connoisseur."

Tasting note: Clear. A sweet star anise top note descends the liquorice octave to fennel and sarsaparilla over hints of dill, caraway and rye bread. Soft, glycerous entry leads into a broad, semi sweet rye, caraway, anise flavour profile with citrus zest adding freshness. Excellent balance. White pepper to finish refreshed by sarsaparilla and caraway through the aftertaste. A solid alternative to traditional Genevers.  42% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... The bouquet emits earthy/mineral-like and fruity scents of slate/stone, wax and orange zest. The palate entry is very citrusy and tart; at midpalate the flavor profile turns astringent and bitter with major grain and citrus fruit influence. Concludes zesty, acidic, fresh and clean. A floral/citrusy style that’s completely different from London Dry's. 85-89 points. - www.wineenthusiast.com

    $1,679.88Dozen
    ABV: 40%

[LOT 1 tasted] Perfect clarity showing considerable viscosity. Dryish bouquet captivates with intriguing fruity aromas reminiscent of Maraschino cherries, fresh prunes, rhubarb tart or semi-ripe nashi pear. Second pass ups the vibrancy and introduces citrus peel, pine needle, sap and balsa-wood like notes. Feather light on entry, developing with a medium bodied, restrained piney / sappy profile and a powerful lemon cough lozenge surge that surprises for this ABV. Ends poised and lively with suggestions of liquorice root, lemon grass, eucalyptus oil and late Vapo-rub in the aftertaste. Exceptionally long. A highly creative, idiosyncratic expression that pushes the boundaries of what gin can be. 40% Alc./ Vol.

Other reviews... While there have been several gins to utilise ants as botanicals, few within the already niche category are as unique as requiring and researching the pheromones of said ants. Accompanied by a set of botanicals grown and conserved on the remote Wooleen Station in Western Australia, this gin seeks to encapsulate the flavours of this extraordinary, arid area. The gin presents an abundant creamy, butter-like texture through the palate, which plays into some dry wood with almost dessicated hazelnut notes. The botanicals themselves draw in more floral, citrus profiles, individually subtle, but together creating an undertow of complexity. There are hues of fruity, dried berries throughout, a little elusive, but adding to the mystique of the spirit. Punchy lemon oil and eucalyptus race through the gin, creating a cord between the different botanicals, unifying them. 91 points - Jess Clayfield, winecompanion.com

Juniper spirit, distilled apricots, and Middle Eastern black limes spend four months together in ex-Pinot Noir barrels from the award-winning Scotchmans Hill winery. Along with the gin, they distill their own rum and whiskey. Thirteen botanicals are used including juniper berries, coriander seeds, licorice, orris and angelica root, refreshingly balanced with citrus and spice.

Tasting note: [20ml sample] Vaguely earthy / rubbery aromas present in the initial pass (latex, rubber band?) ...atypical for gin. During the early years of the Royal British Navy there existed no method for assessing the alcohol content of spirits or any other alcoholic drink. This posed a particular challenge, as they needed to ensure that any volume of alcohol transported aboard a ship would ignite if the cask were damaged during combat. While it may seem peculiar, in times when cannonballs and muskets were in use, damp gunpowder could prove fatal in battle. Therefore, it was imperative that any spilled spirit retained sufficient flammability to allow the use of the powder. To determine this, a test was conducted by blending a small amount of the spirit with gunpowder to create a paste, which was then ignited. If the mixture burned, it was deemed to be 100 degrees proof.

Blind Tiger Navy Strength Organic Gin is distilled in the same small batch manner as all gins in the Blind Tiger Organic Gin range but is bottled at the much higher strength, in fact, at the time of writing, it's the highest of any Navy Strength Gin in Australia, and as such displays concentrated, pungent juniper and lime citrus aroma on first pour. These open to intense citrus and spice character of the other botanicals with time. When neat, it is peppery hot on the palate and has a drying finish at this higher alcohol content, just a drop of water in a glass sees the spirit open up and reveal its exotic character. Guarantees a richly flavoured G&T when mixed. 59.9% Alc./Vol.

Organically grown “Dancy” and “Imperial” mandarins from the Riverland are the keynote in the latest addition to the Blind Tiger range. Getting the formula just right involved a balancing act. Fruit was peeled and kept in varietal batches. One third was soaked fresh overnight in organic spirit then distilled as a separate run. The remaining peel was air dried above the pot stills and then distilled in small batches. The drier Imperial mandarin distillates were blended together, as were the two Dancy distillates creating two different styles of mandarin concentrates. Selected amounts of both were then blended together with the six botanicals that make up Blind Tiger's London Dry. The resulting gin has a bouquet redolent of mandarin pith and peel, leaning into sharper piney juniper notes after air contact. That's repeated in a wonderfully creamy, round, mouth-filling delivery where the citrus oils take centre stage; Tangy peel and pepper add the perfect amount of zest and zing to the finish. Because the juniper is almost completely phased out, it's more like a curaçao than a gin. A novelty for afficionados, more of a treat for fans of citrus liqueurs. Serve neat over ice, with soda or tonic with a twist of orange peel or mandarin. 42.7% Alc./Vol.

A very popular addition to our Gin shelf last year was Bluecoat, named after the Bluecoat militia that fought the American War of Independence. Botanicals include organic juniper berries, American citrus peels, coriander and angelica root distilled with third-party sourced grain neutral spirit in a copper pot still made in Scotland by Forsyths of Rothes.

This latest expression is finished in charred American oak barrels for a minimum of three months providing a unique, well rounded and complex spirit without compromising the latent botanical notes. Beautifully packaged in a cobalt blue bottle, this will be a great gin alternative to classic cocktails such as the Negroni, Martinez and Old Fashioned. 47% Alc./Vol.

Distilled using fresh makrut (kaffir) lime leaves, ginger, lemongrass and kumquats alongside more traditional ingredients such as juniper, coriander, angelica and orris. Beyond the slightly subdued, citrus-led bouquet, this shows good weight and mouthfeel, with a fresh, spicy vibe throughout that features lime peels, coriander seeds, pepper and gingery warmth. The finish is fresh and feels slightly acidic (more lime juice), true to the key botanicals. Just a few cubes of ice draws out the citrus oils and fluffs up the palate. All said, this one's for lovers of lime and coriander - which makes for a nice point of difference. Try it with a dry tonic garnished with a lime leaf or in citrus-forward cocktails. 42% Alc./Vol.

We are pleased to import this sought after gin after a long absence from the Australian market.  The Very old (Oude) distinction derives its name from the fact that this was the first genever known in Holland, the home of gin. Its robust flavour stands out, being decidedly different in taste than that of the more familiar London Dry Gins – fuller and riper, although similar botanicals are used in its manufacture only in different proportions. The chief point of difference is the spirit base used in Dutch Gin which, unlike its New World counterparts, is not a completely tasteless neutral grain spirit. Rather, 'Zeer Oude Bols' is distilled in a pot still from a mash containing rye, barley and corn which on distillation produces some congeners normally associated with whisky. Dutch Gins are also generally distilled at a lower alcoholic strength than New World types. Bols Genever Gin, consistent with its old world tradition, is bottled in a distinctive stone crock and has an alcohol content of 35 % /vol. Best drunk neat and chilled.

An interesting fact when contemplating the use of Genever: In 1862 a celebrity bartender by the name of Jerry Thomas produced the world's first cocktail and bartending book titled "The Bar-tenders Guide or How To Mix Drinks". In there appeared recipes based around four basic cocktail spirits being brandy, rum, whisky and not surprisingly, Genever the predecessor of London Dry Gin.
Below is a cocktail recipe replicating an original version of the 'Orange Collins', a classic in the era of Jerry Thomas.
    Enjoy!

    Recipe: Orange Collins

    Ingredients

    -Oude Genever
    -Dry orange liqueur
    -Freshly squeezed lemon juice
    -Sugar Syrup (2:1)
    -Bitters
    -Sparkling water
    -Orange Wedge

    Method

    1. Fill a shaker with ice and add 2 dashes of bitters, 15ml Sugar Syrup,15ml Dry orange liqueur, 30ml freshly squeezed lemon juice and 75ml of Oude Genever.
    2. Close the shaker and shake for 10 seconds
    3. Double strain: pour the contents of the shaker through a Hawthorn strainer and a fine strain, into the pre-chilled glass.
    4. Squeeze an orange wedge over the glass and drop it into the drink.
    5. Top up with sparkling water .

Serve in a tall glass with an orange wedge and long straw

Released in the late 1980's, Bombay Sapphire was the first London Dry to be marketed as a 'super premium' Gin.

While most gins take their flavour from four or five botanicals, most notably, the juniper berry, Bombay Sapphire uses no less than ten, achieving an altogether more balanced and refined taste. Furthermore, the distilling process is unique. Most other gins boil up the botanicals with the spirit. But with Bombay Sapphire, the spirit is distilled alone. Thus it is in vapour form when it passes through the perforated copper botanicals basket. This process allows each delicate aroma to be absorbed from each respective botanical. These include almonds, lemon peel, liquorice, juniper berries, orris, angelica, cassia bark, cubeb berries and coriander. Bombay's character is more complex and herbal than other gins and its price is indicative of its quality.

Mt. Uncle Distillery has built a reputation for Award winning premium liqueurs and spirits. The only range of real 100% spirits and liqueurs produced on site, over 50+ teas to try and buy, Liqueur Chocolates, Café, local artwork and the list goes on. What more could you want in one place!

The distillery is nestled on the fertile foothills of Mt. Uncle from where it claims its name from. The mountain was named after the Uncle of the founding pioneer John Atherton, very original! Yes there is also a Mt. Aunty beside him as well so the big guy doesn’t get lonely. Set in landscaped gardens on a Banana, Avocado and Macadamia plantation Mt. Uncle Distillery is as a pleasant visit upon your eyes as it is your taste buds.

Apart from the juniper, this gin employs a full repertoire of native Australian botanicals (14 in total). The Lemon Scented gum (citriodora) makes a particularly strong contribution. Smelling this evoked memories of planting an avenue of saplings. The species has soft furry leaves prior to maturity. Rubbing the leaves between your fingers releases the oils along with a delightfully fresh lemon/eucalyptus aroma. Other notable ingredients include native Wattle Seed, Lilly Pilly, Lemon Myrtle, native ginger and Finger Limes.

Tasting note: Crystal clear. Wow! Captivates from the get go with its individualistic bouquet - an alluring combination of lime juice, crushed citriodora leaf and subtle liquoricey notes - juniper takes back seat. A light entry builds to a concentrated, beautifully balanced and wonderfully fresh citriodora leaf and lime peel mid palate with hints of juniper and anise, finishing pleasantly peppery with excellent persistence. A highly idiosyncratic and genuinely Australian rendition that succeeds on all levels but is best left alone. 40% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... You know I am passionate about Aussie gins (I’ve even created a lovely event for you to try some) so when I came across Botanic Australis gin at Top Shelf Boutique Drinks Festival today (expect a round-up later) I couldn’t wait to write about it! It was definitely my ‘Gin of the day’. Where to start? It’s craft-distilled in North Queensland at the Mt. Uncle Distillery (there is a Mt. Aunty too!), contains no fewer than 14 native botanicals, (including three types of myrtle, finger limes and lilly pilly), and is both distinctive and delicious. The gentleman serving me described it as “very herbaceous”. And so it is. A hint of juniper, a mouthful of warmth and then the botanicals play a fandango (look it up) in your mouth. Herb, grass, mint and citrus flavours, all at once. I also detected ginger and pepper after notes too. It was love at first taste and I swiftly purchased a bottle. I am now saving for my airfare to Queensland where I will kiss the still that produced it. - theginqueen.com/

"...something truly stunning, albeit not for everyone." - ginobsessions.com

Read random reviews from around the web and you'll quickly work out that Brockman's is one of those disruptive, divisive contemporary gins, far from traditional London Dry. Positive comments are in the majority, but there's another group who don't quite get it. Beyond the obvious allure of the sleek black, textured bottle, the gin inside is produced using a high-quality grain spirit and infused with ten botanicals (Juniper, Coriander, Blackberries, Blueberries, Orris Root, Cassia Bark, Liquorice, Orange & Lemon, Angelica root and Almonds). Arguably, the berries make the strongest contribution. As one taster explains, "The mids are where the notes that make Brockman’s stand out come to life. Raspberry lemon cake, a distinct sweetness, bright and robust. It begins to take on a more dry tone with blackberry and coriander, ripe berry. And then where it all ends up, its remarkably dry...The Gin and Tonic was exquisite, with notes that reminded me strongly of a blackberry bramble." It's also said to be a heavenly match with Ginger Beer!

Other reviews... something truly stunning, albeit not for everyone. I personally love Brockmans Gin, but I am generally (not always) drawn to gins which are less London Dry and have more sweet, floral tones. On the nose there are strong berry tones with a hint of lemon. To taste, there is initial heat followed by warming berries and finishing with a delicious flavour which reminds me of lemon meringue pie…mmmmm. I find this gin incredibly drinkable neat, which is unsurprising as according to the website, “The aim was to create a gin so smooth and sensual, you would want to drink it neat over ice.” It also makes a mean gin and tonic, thirst quenchingly refreshing and dangerously moreish! - ginobsessions.com

...If you’ve already made up your mind about contemporary style gins, this is one I suggest at least trying. The dry finish sets it apart and it may win you back over. For those who already enjoy the contemporary style, this is one that I think stands head and shoulders above the vast majority. It’s bright, fresh, and fruity, without being too over-the-top. I’d recommend this wholeheartedly to anyone who’s looking for an upgrade from their Hendrick’s, or looking for a Nolet’s that’s more cocktail friendly. There’s a lot to like here, and all but the most hardcore juniper-only gin drinkers will find something worthy of their time here. I highly recommend Brockman’s Gin. 4.7 / 5 points - theginisin.com

"Very interesting flavors with very soft finish. Taste of very mellow floral accents. Could drink over ice for sure. Could see this mixed with Fresca soda on a sweltering day and oh my." - distiller.com

Our notes from 2020... Atypical gin aromas of ribena cordial and raspberry jube with little to zero juniper. Berry flavoured until the finish where light coriander seed and pine enter, balancing the sweetness. Like a flavoured vodka. Try it with ginger ale. 40% Alc./Vol.

Sweet orange peel, native strawberry gum and macerated lilli-pilli offers a gentle yet full bodied sweet backbone, which is warmed by the fragrant spicy notes of aniseed myrtle, cloves, nutmeg and cassia. Simon and Brogan Carr join a small but growing number of inner city suburban distillers servicing Melbourne's Richmond neighborhood. From their bar / distillery set up in an old mechanics workshop, they've created three signature gins: A juniper-forward dry style dubbed Everyday Salvation, a slightly more contemporary style called Evening Light, and a navy strength edition called 'Royal Blood'. Brogan Carr is qualified as a medical laboratory scientist, and says she didn‘t expect to become a distiller. ”I love the precision of science and investigative nature, but working in labs wasn’t enough”. She retrained as a distiller, finishing a Master of Science Brewing & Distilling at Heriot Watt University in Edinburgh, Scotland.

Brogan’s three gins are designed to appeal to different gin drinkers. Evening Light is a fresh and fruity style, made with mangos and raspberries and organic white grapefruit juice alongside more traditional botanicals. Brogan says it's her 'easy drinker'.

Tasting note: Creamy scents of cardamom, orris root and chamomile(?) with hints of lemon peel over background juniper and pepper. Light to medium bodied with a soft entry and attractive flavours of grapefruit, delicate juniper and white pepper. Breezy, fresh and warming. A welcome (albeit limited) addition to the Brookies range, is this "Slow" gin, in the style of English sloe. The point of difference here is that Davidson Plums are used instead of sloe berries. Considered a bush delicacy, the plum is indigenous to the Byron region and is packed with vitamins and minerals. The plums are steeped in Brookie’s Gin for several months. The maceration is diluted to 26% ABV with Mount Warning spring water.

Tasting note: Brilliant copper. Attractive, medium dry aromas suggesting quince paste, plum jam and raisins over muted juniper and white pepper. A juicy-yet-dry, pleasantly tart, plum and red berry flavoured gin with trace pepper in the finish. Delicious Summer sipping, but would be even better at a higher ABV. Keep it simple with soda or just ice. 26% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... While 'slow' gin is not an official gin category, this lovely gin cordial pays homage to the much-loved 'sloe' gin style. In a nod to the style's distinctive plum flavours, Brookie's Slow utilises Davidson Plums to recreate the style. The plums themselves, native to the Byron and the surrounding area, are fruits naturally low in residual sugars, making them tarter than a typical plum. The months-long steeping process, coupled with the lower sugar content, means that while the gin develops the concentrated fruit flavour, it doesn't overwhelm the gin itself. Rhubarb and an earthy hibiscus are encapsulated in this gin. There is also a subtle note of strawberry, minty eucalyptuses, and the underlying dry gin base. 88 points - Jess Clayfield, James Hallidays Australian Wine Companion 2025

Co-founder, Eddie Brook struck up a friendship with legendary Scotch Whisky distiller, Jim McEwan of Bruichladdich fame during one of Jim's tours around Australia. At the time, Eddie was Australian distributor for Bruichladdich's whiskies and Gin (The Botanist). McEwan was coaxed out of retirement and joined Eddie and his family to launch Brookie’s gin in Northern New South Wales. Named "Cape Byron Distillery", the operation runs a 2000 liter Tassie-made copper pot still. Brookies employs 26 botanicals, 18 of which are native to Australia: Sunrise finger limes from Byron Bay, kumquat, blood lime, aniseed myrtle, cinnamon myrtle, White Aspen, riberry, the young leaves of the lilly pilly leaf, macadamia nut, native raspberries from Brook Farm, Dorrigo pepper leaf, river mint and native ginger. Traditional botanicals include juniper, coriander, cassia, angelica and orris root.

Tasting note: Crystal clear. Pure, rounded aromas of citrus peel and lemon thyme followed by woody juniper, pepper, coriander and minty freshness. Five minutes adds hints of raspberry. Creamy textured with a concentrated yet keenly balanced profile; lively with piney juniper upfront, followed by dried herbs and pepper. Hints of macadamia late in the aftertaste? The lingering spiciness and the overall length is quite something. Nicely done. 46% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... An incredibly ambitious gin in its wide use of Australian botanicals -17 to be exact! While one might think such an endeavour might create a ferocious mix of flavours, all clamouring for attention, Brookie's Byron Dry is unified with an overall calm note. Botanicals are well integrated, used intentionally, and work together to create a polished product. There's a subtlety to this gin that presents a little coy and soft; in the glass, it takes a little while to express itself. Once it does, this gin presents with some beautiful ripe fruits, raspberry & riberry. The drier, woody herbaceous botanicals kick in after that, and the mix of flavours helps to create balance and structure for the Australian botanicals to shine through. Juniper is not lost in the mix; the resinous pine follows into the finish and rounds out the overall experience. 93 points - Jess Clayfield, James Halliday's Australian Wine Companion 2025

A relative newcomer to the premium Gin scene. Bulldog is a London dry Gin produced using old-time methods where neutral grain spirit is quadruple distilled utilising copper pot stills. The raw spirit is then steeped in an array of botanicals including: dragon eye, poppy, lotus leaves, lemon, almond, cassia, lavender, orris, liquorice, juniper, angelica, and coriander.

Tasting note: Clear. Lovely fresh citrus peel aromas combine with caraway, talc and juniper notes. More lifted than the London Dry with hints of vanilla and lemon butter over juniper and white pepper. A silky, well rounded profile with creamy juniper, butter menthol lozenge and a vibrant, spicy finish.

Triple distilled from wheat, Citadelle Gin includes 19 botanicals: “coriander from Morocco; orange peel from Mexico; cardamom and nutmeg from India; liquorice from China; cubeb pepper from Java; juniper, savoury, violet and star anise from France; fennel from the Mediterranean; iris from Italy; cinnamon from Sri Lanka; almonds and lemon rind from Spain; cassia from Indochina; angelica from Germany; grains of paradise from West Africa; and cumin from Holland.” Technically, Citadelle is classified as a London Dry gin, however, the method of production is unusual with its use of the Charentais pot still, (a form of still made popular in the 16th century for the production of Cognac, which utilizes a naked flame as opposed to team for its heat source).

Enjoy this unique Gin with a tonic and lime, or in a variety of cocktails like the 'Peche Collins' below.

    Cocktail: Peche Collins

    -22ml Peche De Vigne
    -22ml Fresh Lemon Juice
    -43ml Citadelle Gin

-Build in a pint glass. Shake three times over ice and pour into an ice filled highball. Top with club soda.
-Garnish: Peach Slice (in season) or Lemon Wheel

Tasting note: Clear. A range of aromas form a mesh of lemon merringue, orange zest and mineral notes with some heavier scents of spicy stewed pear. The flavour wave begins with orange pith, aniseed and coriander seed with a soft, spicy, slightly oily mouthfeel unfolding with excellent length. Sweet spirit backbone. Aftertaste of coriander seed and mineral with a delicate citrus zest fade. A full bodied and invigorating Gin that retains a sense of elegance. 44% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... Clear. Aromas of tree bark, floral juniper, marshmallow, nutmeg, and white pepper follow through on a round, supple entry to a dry-yet-fruity medium-full body with citrus pastry and taffy, dusty anise, and cream notes. Finishes with a tangy, melange of spices, sweet citrus, herbal juniper and talc. A fun, flavorful gin.
International Review of Spirits Award: Silver Medal - 89 points (Highly Recommended) - tastings.com

...The first nosing passes find scents of fresh flowers, jasmine, honeysuckle, and cardamom; further aeration stimulates deeper, more herbal notes including anise, grains of paradise, and cinnamon. At the palate entry, the off-dry juniper presence is clearly evident; at midpalate the taste profile turns creamy, rich, and flowery once again. Ends up off-dry, high on juniper essence, and elegant. 96-100: Classic/Highest Recommendation - wineenthusiast.com

Based on a 70-year-old-recipe that took Tanqueray No.7 as its inspiration, Colombo No.7 was conceived at a time when many traditional botanicals were difficult to procure due to trade blockades during World War II. Alternatives were found in locally grown cinnamon, ginger and curry leaf. On working on the recreation of the original recipe, the grandson of the founder, Amal de Silva Wijeyeratne commented: “We did try to see if we could enhance it and tried adding other botanicals and spices. We tried lemon grass, turmeric, cardamom etc., but somehow we always found that more spices didn’t necessarily make it better and seemed to take it out of balance." He adds, "My grandfather was always a perfectionist, and Colombo No.7 was already perfect. We didn’t change a thing, and in about two months the gin was ready.”
The gin is presently distilled and bottled in England using a 100% grain spirit base.

Tasting note: Powerful aromas of pine needle, curry leaf and citrus peel with air contact releasing more of the former. A pure, relaxed delivery with attractive tangy citrus, restrained juniper, white pepper, and a medium long dried herbal finish with trace curry leaf heat in the aftertaste. London dry inspired with a nicely harmonised flavour range. 43.1% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews… Colombo No.7 has landed at a funny time in our gin drinking history; when it was first made 70 years ago it would have been unimaginably alien with its citrus absence and curry leaf presence, but tasted next to gins created in the last couple of years it almost cries of tradition. Juniper leads the way to taste, with liquorice and angelica lending an earthy, almost dusty sweetness and a soft mouth. Cinnamon sings loud and bright, though doesn’t whip at the tongue in a typically barbarous manner, instead conspiring with the ginger and curry leaf to bring a fragrant warmth and depth. Coriander seed rounds out the flavour, bringing a hint of citrus and nuts and prolonging the finish. - http://www.ginfoundry.com

…Having read the list of botanicals, I was expecting something a bit weird tasting, and possibly over spiced. I am not a fan of cinnamon either. So It was a relief to discover that Colombo No. 7 is a properly balanced gin. Juniper and citrus aromas and flavours abound, followed by subtle cinnamon. The finish has great white pepper notes. In case you were wondering it doesn’t taste of curry! Pretty much a perfect G&T, crisp with juniper and citrus with the curry leaves coming through on the finish. I used their suggested garnish of curry leaves which was delicious, but there are plenty of other garnishes that could work well like ginger, lime or mango… - theginqueen.com

This Melbourne specialty involves a week-long maceration of cacao nibs, hazelnuts and wattleseeds in the distillery's Darling Gin, blended with cold-drip coffee from Abbotsford’s Coffee Supreme and the natural sweetness of dates. Not sweet enough to be a liqueur, and with none of the traditional botanical notes associated with gin, the focus is on rich espresso coffee and intensely fruity dark chocolate flavours. Beneath that - and where the gin does become apparent - is the finish, adding a citrus and pepper lift that works to relieve the mid-palate sweetness. It's a bit of a stretch to call it gin, but it is better than many coffee liqueurs. Serve neat on ice with a thin slice of orange or shaken martini style. 38% Alc./Vol.

Founders Karlos Gudic, Sean Waddingham and Ben Evans renovated Clifton Hill's 130-year-old Royal Hotel in 2020, making room for a 300-litre still that currently makes two gins. 'Darling Gin' is their classic London Dry, distilled with locally sourced botanicals like rosemary, oranges, green tea, lemongrass and pepperberry. Aromatically, it's bright and citrus-driven hinting at lime zest and grapefruit, with coriander, white pepper, juniper and dried herbs in tow. Those notes lead into medium-intense flavours of Meyer lemon and honey yoghurt, ending in a linear, peel-fresh, piney finish with lingering spices. This elegant, drier-styled gin is also surprisingly powerful at 42%.

The Dasher + Fisher gins are named for the two rivers that run from the mountains to the pristine coast of Tasmania’s north-west. Together they form the label for three very different gins created by George Burgess. With years of technical expertise as a food scientist, he now spends his time foraging for botanicals or sourcing ingredients from local producers. His gins aim to reflect both place and season. This edition features a blend of twelve botanicals, notably abundant in tangy wakame seaweed sourced from the chilly Tasman Sea resulting in a clean, salty style.

The opening sniffs offer engaging scents of cut grass, kelp, rock pools counterpointed by delicate floral notes and hints of chamomile tea. A creamy, low-spice gin with well rounded flavours of piney juniper, brine, pepper and a tangy, fresh, warming finish. Nice coastal character. Will work for a dry Martini or a complex G&T. 40% Alc./Vol.

The nose shows early evidence of drier styled juniper and an appealing earthy/stony mineral quality accompanied by rosemary and white pepper heat; later inhalations are herbal-fresh, deepening and intensifying with citrus oils and crushed pine buds. Entry is creamy, deceptively soft; mid-palate flavours build with an oily texture and a slow crescendo that sees the earthy-root elements take flight alongside bursts of pepper, fresh grapefruit, orange zest and sustained juniper. Distillerie de Lure, founded in 1898 at Forcalquier in Provence has had a succession of owners for nearly 80 years, amongst whom was Henri Bardouin, a man with a passionate interest in plants and herbs. In 1974, Alain Robert and his small team took the helm of the company now known as Distilleries et Domaines de Provence. Their new gin is named in reference to the twelve plants and spices that go into its creation. The style leans towards classic London Drys. Taking full advantage of its Haute-Provence terroir, botanicals include thyme, rosemary, basil, eucalyptus, sweet almond and mint which join forces with small juniper berries to express the aromatic equivalent of a stroll through the garrigue. Tasted from a 30ml sample, you're greeted by a delightful bouquet of dried herbs, in particular fresh thyme, rosemary and distant juniper. A crisp, drier styled gin, it fans out in the mouth and ends with bittersweet herbs and delicate peppermint, piney juniper and tingling peppers. Herbaceous, fresh, well structured and elegant  - not only good Martini material but a gin that genuinely reflects terroir and evokes a sense of place. 42% Alc./Vol.

Made at the North Uist Distillery on the Isle of Benbecula in Scotland’s Outer Hebrides, Downpour Gin uses local ingredients including wild thyme, which adds herbaceous notes as well as pepper dulse, which adds savoury touches of pepper that are full of umami. Other botanicals include juniper, coriander, lemon, angelica root and pink peppercorn. The distillation process retains visible traces of the botanical oils and essences, which results in a slightly cloudy appearance when mixed. Recommended with premium tonic, garnished with a slice of fresh lemon and a sprig of fresh rosemary. 40% Alc./Vol.

Notes from the producers... Bursting with citrus, spice and the honeyed finish of wild Hebridean heather blossoms foraged in Uist by friends of the distillery before being bartered for gin. Perfect serve: Ice, tonic, lemon, rosemary.

A limited-edition expression crafted by The Shed Distillery in collaboration with two-time world champion Italian mixologist, Bruno Vanzan. Purple viola fig and aromatic laurel are set against Drumshanbo’s standard lineup of citrus, including lemon, lime, and grapefruit, as well as the namesake Gunpowder green tea. 43% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... Fig may be a more subtle flavor to work with, but the gin captures a vibrantly sweet and juicy aroma that carries through the first sips. The more bitter and savory botanicals offer a solid counterbalance, and the gin finishes with just a hint of sweetness. With a richer, more rounded mouthfeel compared to a traditional London dry, the Gunpowder Irish Gin with Italian Fig & Laurel would make for a decadent spritz, the bubbles serving to lift the aromatics. Lean into the fruit-forward profile by mixing up a classic Tom Collins, or go for an extra juicy version of a Clover Club. - imbibemagazine.com

...The nose is intensely citrussy, perhaps the boldest and juiciest I’ve yet encountered from Drumshanbo/Gunpowder. It pours out of the glass with notes of frozen Lemonade, dried lime peel, and grapefruit soda that are equally tart and sweet. At first, the sweetness is all citrus-driven, but as it opens, jammy – almost balsamic – notes emerge, delivering fig preserves, marmalade, and grape must. Undertones of pine sap reveal a hint of the Tuscan juniper, but it struggles against such a diversity of high tone fruits. With even more time to open, notes of melon and bay leaf add a greener dimension but don’t do much to curb the sweetness. It’s a saccharine but still fascinating bouquet, complex and impressively layered. There’s not quite as much complexity, or sweetness for that matter, on the palate, which is probably for the best. But it’s just as well-built and structured with a soft, inviting texture. The front of the sip is juniper-forward with gently peppery traces of gunpowder tea, licorice, and citrus peel, the foundational gin on display. A generous dried fig sweetness is woven throughout, complimented by dustier, resinous notes of fir branches and laurel, dried herbs and caraway. The finish is clean and bright with an easy fadeout of juniper berry, candied fig, black licorice, and grapefruit peel. It’s a lot to unpack but shows well on its own or in simple cocktails. I remain impressed by how much unique flavor Gunpowder consistently weaves into these special gins. What will they think of next? - drinkhacker.com

We're serious about gin.

Distilleries both small and large from every continent on earth can now lay claim to a Gin. You could be cynical and suggest it's merely to maintain cash flow while more 'serious' barrel aged spirits mature. Gin is easy and cheap. After all, it's just flavoured vodka at the end of the day, right? That line of thinking misrepresents all this spirit can be in the hands of visionaries and fanatics. The freshest botanicals in high quality alcohol result in an exotic amalgam of accents and supporting notes that no white spirit can match. Perfumed complexity and bracing intensity are not the characteristics of every gin we taste - hence, it can't be that easy to achieve. From Navy Strength to organic to sloe gin, browse our range today. A long departure from the once "fuddy-duddy" association of the genre, Vickers, Gordon's and other ubiquitous brands are threatened to be swallowed in a giant yawn by the progressive, quality-savvy new-gin devotee. Trending classifications such as 'New Western' style (juniper evident but not dominant) are gaining prominence as are the use of indigenous botanicals and varied spirit bases, including non-grain. Barrel ageing is also gaining momentum. The vast improvement in quality has resulted in texture rich, neat/sipping friendly spirits. Yet, the traditional English and Dutch styles remain more relevant than ever in honouring the cocktail classics. Learn more today...
