Riesling

One of the world's great grape varieties and the acknowledged king of German vineyards, also important in Alsace, Riesling goes through a number of ripening phases making it incredibly varied. Picked early it can form a base wine for Methode Champenoise; a little later, it makes a wonderfully crisp, aromatic lemon-lime filled dry white. A little riper the grapes produce an excellent, slightly sweet 'Spatlese' wine, later again an 'Auslese', and so on. In Australia, crisp, minerally, citrus-led styles dominate, with regions like South Australia, Victoria and Western Australia producing the finest examples. Fish, shellfish and crustaceans are perfect partners. Browse our top rated Riesling wines here.

Trail blazers of cool climate viticulture, Granite Hills is perched atop the spectacular boulder strewn hills of the Great Dividing Range at an altitude of 550 meters. Established in 1970 by fourth generation farmers Gordon and Heather Knight, the 12 hectare vineyard is now run by their son Llew Knight and wife Andrea.
The Granite Hills plantings are the oldest in the Macedon Ranges region; their roots now well down into the old granitic sandy loam soils. It’s the good drainage and low fertility attributes of the soil at Granite Hills which is so beneficial to the balance of the vine, keeping the yields low and the quality of the grapes high. This is reinforced by the nature of the vineyard being very exposed to the prevailing winds – a factor which tends to lower humidity and therefore disease pressure as well as naturally limiting yields. The ripening season at Granite Hills is long due to the Southern latitude and altitude. This has the beneficial effect of allowing fruit characteristics to develop whilst still retaining good natural acidity.

An exceptional Victorian Riesling that combines an intense flavour profile with outstanding power and mouth watering acidity.

With its original Riesling plantings dating back to 1971, the estate Riesling is produced from a selection of vines with an average age typically between 20-25 years old. Brilliant water like core with distinct highlights of green skirting the edges. Pronounced lemon and lime aromas fill the nostrils followed by some orange rind, wet steel, talc and mineral notes. Showing that the brilliance of the 2022 vintage for Riesling wasn’t just restricted to Clare Valley, like so many of its 2022 counterparts this wine delivers fabulous concentration and drive. Scrumptious lemon, lime and orange rind flavours are underpinned by crunchy acidity with notions of wet steel, chalky talc and vibrant mineral characters ensuing. Exceptional power with a long intensely flavoured, mouth watering finish.
Drink over the next 6-8 years.

Year in, year out, a cracking rizza. This is liquid synchronicity: wafts of citrus, juicy and tangy across the palate yet so even and pure, too. Wonderful texture and length. A wine to celebrate the end of a day no matter how it panned out because this will bring a smile and much joy. Drink by 2032.

Along the way his love affair with wine and winemaking grew, and eventually he set off to complete his studies at Geisenheim in Germany before moving to Martinborough in New Zealand to make hand crafted Pinot Noir. Kusuda is known for attention to detail, to the point that each berry is picked individually at harvest by his Japanese friends that fly out each year to assist. Naturally this precision comes at a cost, in particular the miniscule volumes produced, and as such stocks are extremely limited.

The 2021 Riesling leads with salted lime, green apple skins, preserved citrus and cheesecloth. The palate is rich and fleshy, with a fine spool of acid that weaves the fruit and phenolics together as one. This textural wine has a long future in front of it. 13% alcohol, sealed under screw cap. Drink 2023-2037.

Full bottle 1,296 g. Grown in a leased vineyard block on the original Martinborough Terrace. Very dry January and February with heavy rain at the end of March. Hand-picked with careful selection 4–6 April at 20–22 Brix. Whole-bunch pressed, settled for 72 hours with bentonite. Fermented in tank for 16 days. Bottled 25 August 2020. Production: 3,851 bottles (2,000 cork-stoppered and 1,851 screwcapped) plus 69 magnums. TA 6.8 g/l, pH 2.91, RS 1.9 g/l.
Very lively, floral nose. Cutting acidity and a bit hard on the end. Less obvious fruit than, say, the 2020 Rheingau Riesling trocken from Eva Fricke that I have just been tasting. But it’s certainly pure and precise and I should imagine it will age well. And it’s in stark contrast to the over-perfumed, over-sweetened NZ Rieslings that have predominated. Drink 2022 - 2028.

“The wine is made up of 70% high solids tank ferment, 20% ex new Slavonian oak foudre, and 10% aged hogsheads.” Thinks a little differently to most, does our Michael Corbett. Churinga Vineyard is the source of the grapes.
Complex little thing it is. I’m thinking chamomile, Japanese ginger, sour green apple and lemon barley water. It’s quite grippy and spicy, all chalk and brick dust, some bitter lemon, slightly sour but juicy, and a long fresh finish. It’s a wine of interest and personality, and it’s very good to drink. I have a soft spot for this wine – it’s from a region not renown for riesling; I love the green bottle and the John Olsen painting adorning it. It’s also a lovely drink. Fragrant with lemon blossom and jasmine and lightly flavoured with limes and lemons, green apple and fresh herbs. Not at all fruity, it’s dry with mouth-watering acidity, and there’s a cooling stoniness too. Drink by 2033.

Pale quartz; one of the most famous and instantaneously recognisable rieslings in Australia thanks to John Olsen's frogs on the label. The region's maritime climate means no matter how well it is made - very well indeed here - it is in a different category to Great Southern rieslings, and most is (sensibly) enjoyed when young and fresh.

Leo Buring Leonay. The mention of that name is enough to get any riesling lover standing to attention. Named after winemaker and the rather awesomely monikered Leo Buring Hermann Paul Leopold Buring. Anyone that has said "Winemaking isn't a matter of life or death – it's much more important than that!" is OK by me. The wine is a singularity of limey goodness. Bickford's lime cordial, freshly squeezed lime juice and green apple sorbet with hints of Christmas lily, clover blossom, crushed quartz and lemongrass. Precise and focused with a tubular core pushed across the palate by fine, vivid acidity with an umami blush on the exit. If there was a Mount Rushmore for Aussie riesling, old Leo's smiling face would be the first to be chiseled into the granite. Drink by 2040.

Other reviews… Trockenbeerenauslese - indeed, one of the best examples of this style I have tasted. Orange-gold; extraordinarily rich and intense, the acidity not searing as so often is the case, just balancing the sublime concentration of dried and sugar-coated fruit. Drink by 2048. 11.5% alcohol.

Well look at this would you. A Longhop Riesling, with fancy packaging too.
Juicy, bath salts perfume, green apple and lime leaf. It has grip and lovely texture, a little bit savoury, a litte but fun, a fine chalky texture, all this grip and perfume, with again the apple and lemon zest bitterness carrying it long. Delightful. Fleshy and flavoursome. A very strong buy recommendation for drinking now, or over the next few years. Drink 2022-2026+

Mosel raised in the ‘Australian style’, from grapes grown on Loosen’s Erdener Treppchen (The Little Staircase of Erden) vineyard.
Mango, cumquat, sour apple, flowers and a little fresh mint. Quite fleshy and powerful, savoury and juicy, fine dusting of texture, fairly soft acidity, some zest and tang on a solid finish. It’s a bit chunky, but in a good way. Drink 2020-2027+

Riesling in Australia.

Riesling is thought to have been introduced to New South Wales in the 1830s by the Macarthur's (pioneers of the Australian wool industry). German settlers brought the variety to the Barossa Valley in South Australia in the 1850's where the grape flourished. It's since found many new homes, such as Mt. Barker in Western Australia, the Clare Valley in South Australia, as well as Central and Southern Victoria. A tightrope of fruit and racy acidity when young, age-worthy examples develop honey and toast characteristics, sometimes accompanied by a distinct 'kerosene' note. Generally suited to cooler climates, examples from Grosset, Petaluma, Wilson Polish Hill, Dukes, Western Australia and Best's Great Western, Victoria are all worth seeking out.
