Riesling

One of the world's great grape varieties and the acknowledged king of German vineyards, also important in Alsace, Riesling goes through a number of ripening phases making it incredibly varied. Picked early it can form a base wine for Methode Champenoise; a little later, it makes a wonderfully crisp, aromatic lemon-lime filled dry white. A little riper the grapes produce an excellent, slightly sweet 'Spatlese' wine, later again an 'Auslese', and so on. In Australia, crisp, minerally, citrus-led styles dominate, with regions like South Australia, Victoria and Western Australia producing the finest examples. Smoke, funk and flint cloud the nose of the 2021 Riesling Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Auslese. Underneath, there is a touch of shy fruit which becomes wonderfully clear on the palate: tart Mirabelle jelly, with an urgent, pervasive, delicious freshness heightening the balanced sweetness even more. A yeasty texture adds an extra dimension but it is the fine, bright acidity absolutely guiding this wine. Totally mouth-watering. (Sweet). Drink 2030-2050.

The 2021 Riesling Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Spätlese is from the smallest parcel the Prüms have, of just 0.6ha. Smoky, funky reduction can barely cloud the vivid citrus notes that break through - hints of tangerine are laced with lime and have beautiful crushed citrus foliage highlights. The sweetness on the palate amplifies the citrus purity, raising it to precision and high aromatic allure with bright acidity. This is incisive, vivid, invigorating and super-bright. Sensation of molten light honey on the very end despite the initial dry impression. Recommended to the patient. Drink 2024-2037.

The wine proves delicately juicy and sweet on the refined and almost light-weighted palate. Some zesty and spicy elements come through in the long finish to tickle to otherwise ripe and honeyed flavors of peach, pear, and apricot. It still proves on the sweet side and will require at least a full decade to reveal its true colors. Drink 2030-2050.

Those youthful Prüm aromas of sulphur-related compounds and the fumy/herbal notes of spontaneous fermentation all but obscure the citrus fruit on the nose. However, on the palate, there's peachy citrus purity, almost a softness even with the high acidity, balanced as it is by the sweetness. The silky texture also seems to smooth out the acidity. The 2020er Graacher Himmelreich Riesling Auslese offers a beautifully pure and ripe nose of smoke, grapefruit, lime, vineyard peach, minty herbs, and bacon-driven aromatics from residual from its spontaneous fermentation. The wine coats the palate with gorgeously ripe and juicy notes of fruits and leaves a superbly pure, smooth, and almost soft and suave feel in the hugely long finish. The aftertaste is still loaded with sweetness in need of integration, which will need quite some time to integrate. There is upside potential as the wine gains finesse with age. Drink 2035-2050+.

It offers a most gorgeous, superbly complex, and rather subtle nose of minty herbs, candied grapefruit, fine honeyed peach, anise, smoke, and herbs. The wine proves much richer and riper on the palate, where plenty of exotic and ripe fruits join the party. This fruity, smooth, and juicy side is nicely wrapped into zest and tension in the very long finish. Expect more than a decade of patience to get the full impact of this stunning wine. But you will not regret. Drink 2035-2060.

So tight and introvert! Here you can smell some SO2, presumably applied to keep that sweet fruit going for many a long year I'm suggesting drink dates as for a full 75-cl bottle. Richly veined, as though there are waves of flavour crossing each other on the palate. So clean and brisk, yet with delightful sweetness and the suggestion of botrytis. A rich medley of vegetation. Dangerously approachable. Molten. Drink 2024-2050.

This was the first – among very few – wines in the 2015 Prüm lineup to lead with a bit of yeasty fermentative “Mosel stink,” but that veil soon parted more than sufficiently to showcase an alliance of ripe honeydew melon with cassis, grapefruit, and hints of cress and lemon peel that subsequently lend incisive, piquant invigoration on a delicate, polished, infectiously juicy palate. Penetrating and sharply focused, but without its efficacious and enlivening acids turning at all aggressive, the tinglingly, refreshingly citric yet soothing and cooling finish serves up a shimmering array of stony, smoky, alkaline and crystalline nuances. There is an expressive slate character here and coolish precision in terms of fruit flavors. Classy on the first palate, this is a crystalline, elegant and piquant, vital and crunchy Auslese that dinks quite well even in its youth. Based on the wine's density and piquancy, however, I recommend to cellar it for at least a decade. Tasted at the domain in September 2020.

To my surprise, this delivered more effusive as well as decadent floral perfume than many a non-Himmelreich Prüm 2018, along with less of the citricity that I associate with this site. No doubt partly in consequence of those factors, there is a stronger sense of sheer sweetness here than in the other Auslesen of this collection. But of course, it is very early days for assessing a Prüm Himmelreich Auslese, that description being among those most consistently associated with ageworthiness on the Mosel. Scents and palate presence of fading lily blossom, Golden Delicious apple essence, overripe quince and Persian melon combine for a decadently heady and rich performance, with a glossy, creamy texture and prominent sweetness managing to avoid heaviness or stickiness en route to a caressingly and envelopingly lingering finish.

Piquancy of citrus zest and seeds is restrained but invigoratingly efficacious, and the generously juicy finish is admirably transparent to underlying wet stone.

At any given Prädikat level, the Prüms’ offering from the Wehlener Sonnenuhr – while in the long run often “best of show” – can frequently prove less expressive in its first year, but such is definitely not the case here!

While it’s not as effusively ripe as its Wehlener counterpart nor as brightly engaging as this collection’s Graacher Himmelreich Spätlese, this lusciously lingering beauty has a long life ahead of it, even by estate standards.

Honeydew and Persian melons supply extremely ripe yet freshly juicy fruit that, when combined with the confitured quince and apple, make for an exceedingly luscious midpalate impression, reinforced by textural gloss and prominent but not excessive sweetness. The finish lingers impressively, reprising a welcome inner-mouth hint of flower shop. Look for this to deliver much more in future and to enjoy at least the typical ageworthiness of a Prüm Wehlener Auslese, if not more.

The 2018 Graacher Himmelreich Spätlese is discreet yet deep and complex on the elegant and spicy nose that exhibits very fine stone fruit aromas. Round, lush and piquant on the palate, this is a crystalline, piquant, persistently salty and stimulating Himmelreich with fine tannins on the finish that add grip and a very light, food-friendly astringency that moderates away the sweetness. As with the corresponding Graacher, the finishing sense of wet stone and floral perfume is striking, and here a mouthwatering hint of salinity adds significantly to the appeal.

Heady scents of lily, heliotrope, quince preserves and apple jelly set the stage for a creamy, buoyant palate performance similarly dominated by billowing floral perfume and rich fruit confiture. Although the harmonious, lusciously layered finish lacks the clarity of the corresponding Zeltinger, it displays superb persistence and incorporates a mouthwatering suffusion of mineral salts. Here is another instance where the Prüms’ general observation almost certainly holds true: Wehlener Sonnenuhr needs longer to show its potential than a wine of identical Prädikat from one of their other sites.

The 2015 Wehlener Sonnenuhr Auslese (AP 17) is clear, though still a bit reductive on the nose, offering sweet herbal flavors more than anything else. There are very subtle mineral flavors in the background. The wine is round, highly refined and perfectly balanced on the palate, provided with a lush and sweet fruit, an elegant texture and a stimulating salinity and grip in the finish. This is gorgeous! Keep it for another 5-10 years, though.

2013 is seen by the Prum family as the finest vintage since the legendary 1976 vintage, and uniquely this year one with only Auslese wines commercially released. A long, slow ripening season with a very late harvest with high levels of botrytis has created wines with added richness and depth, but also high levels of ripe acidity. These will be extremely long lived wines, but approachable young, and each expressing their vineyard origin with exacting clarity.

“Despite the high concentration, mainly achieved by the remarkable noble rot, which often requires much more patience in the early stage of development, these wines are opening earlier than we expected and are already very attractive now. Pale golden yellow. Sublime aromas of apricot, white lime and brown spices. In spite of the rich, glossy nectarine fruit, refreshing acidity makes this Auslese appear light and superbly elegant. With a lively spice character animating the long, sweet, delicate finish, this is my favorite of the standard Ausleses.

Riesling is thought to have been introduced to New South Wales in the 1830s by the Macarthur's (pioneers of the Australian wool industry). German settlers brought the variety to the Barossa Valley in South Australia in the 1850's where the grape flourished. It's since found many new homes, such as Mt. Barker in Western Australia, the Clare Valley in South Australia, as well as Central and Southern Victoria. A tightrope of fruit and racy acidity when young, age-worthy examples develop honey and toast characteristics, sometimes accompanied by a distinct 'kerosene' note. Generally suited to cooler climates, examples from Grosset, Petaluma, Wilson Polish Hill, Dukes, Western Australia and Best's Great Western, Victoria are all worth seeking out.
