Riesling
One of the world's great grape varieties and the acknowledged king of German vineyards, also important in Alsace, Riesling goes through a number of ripening phases making it incredibly varied. Picked early it can form a base wine for Methode Champenoise; a little later, it makes a wonderfully crisp, aromatic lemon-lime filled dry white. A little riper the grapes produce an excellent, slightly sweet 'Spatlese' wine, later again an 'Auslese', and so on. In Australia, crisp, minerally, citrus-led styles dominate, with regions like South Australia, Victoria and Western Australia producing the finest examples. Fish, shellfish and crustaceans are perfect partners. Browse our top rated Riesling wines here.

The 2021 Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Auslese is clear, bright, fresh and highly refined on the fascinating, coolish, pure and detailed nose that shows crunchy slate aromas and very delicate lemon fruit. Filigreed and delicate on the palate, this is a lush but light, highly finessed, stimulating and saline Auslese that already drinks beautifully. It's playful but noble and of great, great elegance and finesse. 7% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted at the domaine in May 2023. Drink 2023 - 2050.

Stephan Reinhardt - Wine Advocate (Jun 01, 2023)Smoke, funk and flint cloud the nose of the 2021 Riesling Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Auslese. Underneath, there is a touch of shy fruit which becomes wonderfully clear on the palate: tart Mirabelle jelly, with an urgent, pervasive, delicious freshness heightening the balanced sweetness even more. A yeasty texture adds an extra dimension but it is the fine, bright acidity absolutely guiding this wine. Totally mouth-watering. (Sweet). Drink 2030-2050.

Crystalline and refined on the palate, this is an intense, complex and mouth-tickling Sonnenuhr Spätlese with remarkable purity, savoriness and lemon freshness on the finish. This is a light but substantial, dense and structured WSU that will benefit from further bottle aging, The phenols are still quite prominent here, but aeration will help to oxidize and integrate them. 7% stated alcohol. The 2021 Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Spätlese opens with a clear, bright and elegant bouquet of great detail and finesse. Finely weathered yet still crunchy blue slate and maybe some saffron notes populate this remarkably finessed and elegant yet also intense and flinty nose that leads to a lush, round, crystalline and sustainably saline, very long and expressive finish with a crunchy/saline slate bite. The wine has classy acidity and is highly stimulating. 7% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted at the domaine in May 2023. Drink 2023 - 2050.

Stephan Reinhardt - Wine Advocate (Jun 01, 2023)The 2021 Riesling Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Spätlese is from the smallest parcel the Prüms have, of just 0.6ha. Smoky, funky reduction can barely cloud the vivid citrus notes that break through - hints of tangerine are laced with lime and have beautiful crushed citrus foliage highlights. The sweetness on the palate amplifies the citrus purity, raising it to precision and high aromatic allure with bright acidity. This is incisive, vivid, invigorating and super-bright. What a treasure, what a celebration of citrus, what an incredible balance. (Sweet). Drink 2030-2050.

The 2020er Bernkasteler Badstube Riesling Kabinett has a cool, reserved, and fresh nose of stone fruits, yellow peach, herbs, and plenty of earthy spices. The wine proves juicy and more fruit-driven on the palate, where some ripe yellow peach and pear make for a smoother side. This broader side is nicely wrapped into herbs and candied grapefruit in the medium-long and well-delineated finish. The wine gains finesse and freshness as it unfolds and clearly needs a couple of years to fully deliver. There is potential here! Drink 2027-2040.

Those youthful Prüm aromas of sulphur-related compounds and the fumy/herbal notes of spontaneous fermentation all but obscure the citrus fruit on the nose. Richly veined, as though there are waves of flavour crossing each other on the palate. So clean and brisk, yet with delightful sweetness and the suggestion of botrytis. A rich medley of vegetation. Dangerously approachable. Molten. Drink 2024-2050.

2015 Joh Jos Prum Graacher Himmelreich Riesling Spatlese Museum ReleaseMosel, GERMANY$125. 00Bottle$1500.00 DozenABV: 8%Closure: CorkOther Reviews....
Prüm's 2015 Graacher Himmelreich Spätlese is clear, intense and flinty on the nose, very precise but well concentrated; however, it is the most reductive of the Spätlese quartet. Round and piquant, with a stimulating fruit and salinity, this is a very well-defined, crystalline and straight Spätlese of great finesse and elegance. It needs five years or so to unfold all its talents, but it can surely age for 20 or 30 years. Drink 2022 - 2045.

Stephan Reinhardt - Wine Advocate (Apr 2017)This was the first – among very few – wines in the 2015 Prüm lineup to lead with a bit of yeasty fermentative “Mosel stink,” but that veil soon parted more than sufficiently to showcase an alliance of ripe honeydew melon with cassis, grapefruit, and hints of cress and lemon peel that subsequently lend incisive, piquant invigoration on a delicate, polished, infectiously juicy palate. Penetrating and sharply focused, but without its efficacious and enlivening acids turning at all aggressive, the tinglingly, refreshingly citric yet soothing and cooling finish serves up a shimmering array of stony, smoky, alkaline and crystalline nuances. Drink 2018-2040.

David Schildknecht - VinousA great spätlese that is really ripe, but still vibrant, elegant and subtle. Sensational interplay of all the components that make this a very classic example of this category. This has a personality all of its own (something floral that's unusual for this site). No need to hurry before 2050!

2011 Joh Jos Prum Graacher Himmelreich Riesling Auslese Goldkapsel Museum ReleaseMosel, GERMANY$320. 00Bottle$3840.00 DozenABV: 7.5%Closure: CorkOther Reviews....
Candied, spiced apple and overripe Persian melon dominate the Prum 2011 Graacher Himmelreich Riesling Auslese gold capsule, with honeyed impingement both aromatically and on the palate reinforcing the sense of relative opacity and rounded richness that the other Graachers in this year’s collection displayed. Here the sense of delicacy is nearly weightless; intriguing and enticing notes of liquid peony and lily enter the picture mid-palate after the wine takes on air; and for all of the botrytization in effect, there is a welcome retention of primary juiciness, spurring a lusciously long finish. Look for four decades or more of luxuriant satisfaction. Drink 2013 - 2053.

David Schildknecht - Wine Advocate (Apr 2013)Pale golden yellow. Candied apricot, clove, nut oil and a touch of smoky botrytis on the nose. Creamy, tropical fruit flavors are nicely accented by salty minerality. This impressively rich auslese boasts a compelling finish animated by lemon curd and slate.

Stephan Reinhardt - Wine Advocate (Oct 2020)Theoretically, wine can’t smell mineral, but this Spätlese certainly has an intense wet-stone character. Then, mandarin-orange, jasmine and fresh-ginger notes develop. Still tightly wound, and also very focused and clean through the long, crystalline finish. Discreet hint of sweetness. Stephan Reinhardt - Wine Advocate (Oct 2020)Although this is still very youthful, there’s already lots of sliced pear and white peach on the nose with a hint of wet earth. Quite a generous Kabinett, but with the distinctive raciness of the category, this already gives so much, but has excellent aging potential. Very long finish with just a hint of apple rings sauteed in butter, suggesting the ripeness of the vintage.

The 2018 Graacher Himmelreich Auslese is still discreet but deep and vegetal on the coolish and still slightly reductive nose that opens up slowly with aeration. There is an expressive slate character here and coolish precision in terms of fruit flavors. Classy on the first palate, this is a crystalline, elegant and piquant, vital and crunchy Auslese that dinks quite well even in its youth. Based on the wine's density and piquancy, however, I recommend to cellar it for at least a decade. Tasted at the domain in September 2020.

Stephan Reinhardt - Wine Advocate (Oct 2020)To my surprise, this delivered more effusive as well as decadent floral perfume than many a non-Himmelreich Prüm 2018, along with less of the citricity that I associate with this site. No doubt partly in consequence of those factors, there is a stronger sense of sheer sweetness here than in the other Auslesen of this collection. But of course, it is very early days for assessing a Prüm Himmelreich Auslese, that description being among those most consistently associated with ageworthiness on the Mosel. Scents and palate presence of fading lily blossom, Golden Delicious apple essence, overripe quince and Persian melon combine for a decadently heady and rich performance, with a glossy, creamy texture and prominent sweetness managing to avoid heaviness or stickiness en route to a caressingly and envelopingly lingering finish.

Stephan Reinhardt - Wine Advocate (Oct 2020)In a striking and delightful contrast to its superb Badstube counterpart, this Himmelreich Kabinett offers a cooling and overtly citric personality. Lemon and grapefruit are suffused with green herbal essences, accompanied by yeast and wet stone on the nose and an adjunct of juicy ripe honeydew on the polished, delicate, sorbet-like palate. Piquancy of citrus zest and seeds is restrained but invigoratingly efficacious, and the generously juicy finish is admirably transparent to underlying wet stone.

Stephan Reinhardt - Wine Advocate (Oct 2020)Heady scents of honeysuckle and heliotrope mingle with apple, quince and Persian melon. The exuberantly juicy, vibrant, bell-clear finish offers a lightly shimmering suggestion of fruit/stone interplay. Stephan Reinhardt - Wine Advocate (Oct 2020)Scents of quince and apple jelly are accompanied by a surprisingly greenhouse-like evocation of diverse flowers and foliage. I say “surprisingly” because many of the Prüm 2018s deliver an especially heady, sweet, and often even decadent sort of floral perfume. Honeydew and Persian melons supply extremely ripe yet freshly juicy fruit that, when combined with the confitured quince and apple, make for an exceedingly luscious midpalate impression, reinforced by textural gloss and prominent but not excessive sweetness. The finish lingers impressively, reprising a welcome inner-mouth hint of flower shop. 2013 is seen by the Prum family as the finest vintage since the legendary 1976 vintage, and uniquely this year one with only Auslese wines commercially released. A long, slow ripening season with a very late harvest with high levels of botrytis has created wines with added richness and depth, but also high levels of ripe acidity. These will be extremely long lived wines, but approachable young, and each expressing their vineyard origin with exacting clarity.
“Despite the high concentration, mainly achieved by the remarkable noble rot, which often requires much more patience in the early stage of development, these wines are opening earlier than we expected and are already very attractive now. The botrytis is very clean and clear, the aromas and flavors intense and juicy, and the vibrant acidity gives the wines a surprising freshness. These [are] unique wines with their extreme intensity and tension…” -Katharina Prüm
