2018 Pieropan Soave ClassicoSoave, ITALY$29. 99Bottle$359.88 DozenCellar: Drink now - 2 Years (2019-2021)ABV: 12%Closure: StelvinThe Pieropan winery is in the heart of the Classico zone and dates back to 1890. Leonildo ‘Nino’ Pieropan, who sadly passed away in 2018, was the first to show the world just how great Garganega, and Italian white wine, can be. He recognised the importance of terroir early on, acquiring various hillside vineyards and expanding the prestigious Calvarino and La Rocca vineyards, first made as single vineyard crus in 1971 and 1978 respectively.
Today, sons Dario (winemaker) and Andrea (viticulturist) continue the family tradition. The brothers have converted all of their vineyards to organic and are overseeing the new winery being built amongst the vineyards just outside the village.
2018 was a great vintage for Garganega, producing fully ripened grapes whilst still retaining high natural acidity. Brilliant pale straw colour with a greenish tinged outskirts and a watery hue. Lifted lime, pear and red apple skin aromas drift from the glass followed by hints of quince and wet stone. Vibrant flavours of fresh pear, red apple and lime show some zing with citrusy quince like characters and flinty mineral elements also evident. Nicely textured, it finishes dry with refreshing acidity and a long pear, apple, subtle quince and flinty mineral aftertaste.
Drink over the next 1-2 years.

While the two children vinify separately, they share the same cellar in Meursault, and produce wines that are more similar than they are different. Vine age is impressive, with many plots over 60 years old, and no herbicides or fertilisers used. Wines are fermented wild in barrel, thereafter raised in oak for 19-22 months, with no more than 30% new oak used predominantly for the top cuvées.
The Boisson family own a 1ha parcel within this lieu-dit which was planted in 1988. Following fermentation, the wine spends 18 months in oak, with around 20% being new.

The fruit for Pierre's Meursault comes from Les Criots and Les Perchots on the northern side of the commune. Winemaking is similar to Anne's wine, with a cold settling for 12 hours before fermentation in barrique, of which 20% is new oak. Lees are stirred four or five times at the end of alcoholic fermentation in early spring, and then given 22 months élevage.

The 2019 Bourgogne Blanc Les Herbeux derives from an early-ripening site, and the result is a fleshier, richer wine, evocative of pear, confit citrus and toasted almonds. Medium to full-bodied, satiny and concentrated, it's more gourmand in style. Drink 2021 - 2029.

Wines are fermented wild in barrel, thereafter raised in oak for 18-21 months, with up to 40% new oak used for the top cuvées. Fined but not filtered. On top of that, the vines mostly carry a decent amount of age – some 60 years plus – all closely tended by hand before what Pierre Boisson calls ‘slow, patient winemaking with not too much oak and minimal lees stirring’. Alc. 13% - 2019 Pierre-Henri Rougeot Chassagne-Montrachet Morgeot Les Petits Clos Premier CruBurgundy, FRANCE$240. 00Bottle$2880.00 DozenABV: 14%Closure: Cork
Pierre-Henri Rougeot not only crafts the wines at his family property, Domaine Rougeot based in Meursault, since the 2017 vintage he has also made wines under his own label. Before returning to Domaine Rougeot, Pierre-Henri worked at Domaine De Montille in Volnay, as well as selling oak barrels to some of the finest names in Burgundy. The connections formed during this time have allowed Pierre-Henri to source from a collection of prime plots throughout the Cote, favouring only organically farmed grapes. Pierre-Henri has refined his winemaking along the lines of luminaries such as Lalou Bize-Leroy of Domaine Leroy, and as a result he uses 100% whole bunch to macerate the reds which results in characterful yet silky structure on the palate. When it comes to pressing the reds, he uses a modern vertical press rather than the common pneumatic press to extract very pure, concentrated and fresh juice. The whites are pressed directly to barrels, with no battonage and aging sur lees. There is neither filtration nor clarification and only indigenous yeasts are used for the fermentations. The oak regiment is light with enough new oak to lift the attributes of each wine but it's subtle enough to be almost impossible to notice. Pierre-Henri is making waves in France and around the world and is a name to watch.

Two barrels. Very ripe aromatics, yellow peaches and honeysuckle. Lovely energy behind, a touch of cinnamon and sandalwood, good balance and length. This wine is pretty impressive too, but might be a little too exotic for some.

After leaving his family domaine in 2005, Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey has established himself as one of the rising stars of Burgundy. Pierre-Yves has built a strong reputation for crafting exquisite white Burgundy that display energy and vitality. The white wines are whole bunch pressed, fermented with natural yeasts, aged on lees for up to 18 months in mostly in 350 litre barrels with no lees stirring and no filtration. The corks used come from one tiny supplier and are extra long and extra wide (55mm x 25mm) for the village, 1er cru and Grand cru wines and are untreated with no paraffin and the bottles are then sealed with soft wax to ensure no problems with premature oxidation. The resulting wines are built to age classically up to 10 years or more.
Pierre-Yves sources his Aligote from two sites, 25% from one located in Chassagne Montrachet lower slopes, and 75% from a parcel in Hautes Cotes de Beaune with 45+ year old vines of a type with a slightly rosé skin; Aligote d’Oree. His Aligote is the only wine which receives full malolactic fermentation in the range, and is aged in 350 litre barrels for 14 months then three months in stainless steel tank before bottling unfined and unfiltered.

Pretty and layered aromas of pear and apple compote display additional nuances of zest, spice and an all but invisible touch of wood. There is a bit less volume and even finer texture to the stony, delicious and intense medium weight flavors that deliver fine length on the balanced, clean and dry finale that is just a bit more complex. This is lovely plus it's a wine that should drink well young as well as with mid-term keeping. Drink through 2029+.

Allen Meadows - BurghoundUnwinding in the glass with aromas of pear, crisp yellow orchard fruit, toasted hazelnuts and buttery pastry, the 2022 Saint-Aubin 1er Cru La Chatenière is medium to full-bodied, with a fleshy and layered core of fruit girdled by racy acids, concluding with a long, chalky finish.

William Kelley - Robert Parker's Wine AdvocateThe 2022 Saint-Aubin La Chatenière 1er Cru, a blend of three different parcels, is quite closed on the nose despite rigorous coaxing. A touch of reduction is at play, with crushed oyster shell and kelp-like scents percolating through the malic fruit. The palate is well-balanced with a concentrated opening. This feels like a grippy, weighty Saint-Aubin, perhaps without quite the nuance of the 2021, yet it feels reassuringly persistent on the finish. Drink 2025-2043.

Neal Martin - VinousThe 2022 Chatenière from PYCM boasts succulent aromas of ripe apple and quince with a hint of hazelnut and a flinty edge. The texture is ripe and broad, very different from the Champelots, which is lemony and lighter. The domaine farms three parcels here on the sheltered south and west-facing slopes between Champelots and Murgers des Dents de Chien. The grapes are gently pressed as whole clusters and fermented with most of their lees in cask. Drink 2025-2045.

Fresh, bright and cool aromas include those of Granny Smith apple, citrus rind, spice and a hint of spice. William Kelley - Robert Parker's Wine AdvocateThe 2022 Saint-Aubin En Remilly 1er Cru blends three similarly-aged plots on the slope's top, middle, and bottom. Mathis Colin-Morey said this is difficult to farm in warmer vintages because of its southerly exposure and shallow soils. Nevertheless, its captivating bouquet has impressive delineation considering the season. The palate is very well-balanced with tension and nervosité, a "sunny" Saint-Aubin with hints of grapefruit and apricot towards the finish. Quite spicy on the aftertaste. Very fine, though I err towards the La Chatenière this vintage. Drink 2025-2038.

Neal Martin - VinousDense and rich, the En Remilly from Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey is among his top wines from this village. He owns 0.67 hectares spread over three parcels. After carefully sorting the grapes, he crushes them lightly before pressing and fermentation in cask (30% new) with most of their lees. The result is lush and approachable, with ripe pear and apricot fruit, hints of almond and acacia, and a touch of butter and spice. The texture is creamy but not heavy; in three to five years, this should lose most of its baby fat and begin to show us outstanding things. Drink 2027-2050.

Charles Curtis MW - DecanterA clear fresh colour, this is pure, not roasted as En Remilly can become, less flesh than Chatenière, on the stones. More elegant, cooler and airier aromas include those of Granny Smith apples, mineral reduction, exotic tea and plenty of citrus elements. Good vigor. The palate is very well-balanced with a crisp bead of acidity. William Kelley - Robert Parker's Wine AdvocateThe 2022 Chassagne-Montrachet Chenevottes 1er Cru has a focused and precise nose, though it has the unenviable task of following the flattering Abbaye de Morgeot. William Kelley - Robert Parker's Wine AdvocateThe 2022 Puligny-Montrachet La Garenne 1er Cru comes from one of the last parcels to be picked since the vines are located on higher contours, the growth cycle always lagging behind its peers. The very pretty bouquet is lively with orange blossom, wild peach and crushed stone. The palate is well-balanced and perhaps doesn't deliver on the promise of the nose at the moment, as it is quite closed. Wafting aromas include those of citrus confit, apple, mineral reduction and a similarly discreet dollop of oak. There is more volume and richness to the beautifully textured and tension-filled medium medium-bodied flavors that conclude in a clean, dry and citrus-tinged finale. Drink through 2027+.

Allen Meadows - BurghoundThe 2022 Saint-Aubin Village has turned out nicely, bursting with aromas of pear, freshly baked bread, hazelnuts and white flowers. Medium-bodied, fleshy and vibrant, it's a charming, nicely balanced wine that concludes with a saline finish. Lieu-dit Le Banc, formerly bottled as such, makes up some 80% of the blend.

William Kelley - Wine Advocate (Jan 19, 2024)The 2022 Saint-Aubin Village blends four different lieux-dits in the appellation. This has a well-defined bouquet with orchard fruit, hints of orange blossom and white tea. The palate is medium-bodied with impressive concentration. Very good weight for a Saint-Aubin Village, and though not complex per se, it feels very persistent and fresh on the finish. Drink 2025-2039.

Neal Martin - VinousThis has been racked. Le Ban with several other vineyards included. Pale colour with lime green reflections. Just a little toasty note to the nose, with pure white fruit on the palate, with the vigorous freshness associated with St-Aubin. A tingling finish thanks to the mineral acidity. The 2022 Bourgogne Aligoté, 55% from the Hautes-Côtes de Beaune and the rest from Chassagne picked simultaneously, was taken directly from stainless steel tanks. It has a clean and fresh Granny Smith and pear-scented nose. The palate is quite edgy on the entry with a pleasant twist of sour lemon, bright and saline on the finish. Enjoy this over the next five or six years - there's plenty of energy here. Drink 2024-2030.

Smoky aromas of petrol, citrus and pear are trimmed in just enough wood to notice. The attractively vibrant middleweight flavors possess good detail and length on the bitter lemon-inflected finale. This appealingly dry effort should drink well young. Drink through 2026+.

William Kelley - Wine Advocate (Jan 19, 2024)The 2022 Bourgogne Blanc comes from two parcels in Puligny and Chassagne-Montrachet. It has an attractive, leesy bouquet, as you might expect, well-defined with a little more intensity than the previous vintage. Here too there is a smoky character to the aromas of white orchard fruit that also reflect petrol and citrus influences. Firm reduction flattens the fruit today. More interesting are the succulent and concentrated larger-bodied flavors that retain a beguiling sense of energy that carries over to the intensely stony and hugely long finish where a touch of wood appears. This is tightly coiled and a wine that is going to require extended patience. Drink through 2031+.

Allen Meadows - BurghoundThere are only two barrels of the 2021 Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru, a medium to full-bodied, rich and layered wine evocative of minty orchard fruit, ripe citrus, buttery pastry and toasted nuts. With good mid-palate depth and a penetrating finish, it shows promise despite the challenging vintage.
91-93 points
William Kelley - Wine Advocate (Feb 01, 2023)The 2021 Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru, the only cuvée matured in 228-liter pièce, comes half from Pernand and half from Les Longuettes. It has a backward nose at first that gradually opens up to reveal seductive orchard fruit, camomile and white peach aromas, though they remain discrete. The palate is creamy on the entry, fine depth, lightly spiced with ample weight on the finish. Wonderful to see how this expands with each swirl of the glass. Drink 2025-2045.
93-95 points
Neal Martin - VinousTwo barrels, one new, one older, one from Pernand and one Languettes. Pale lemon with the lightest green tint. This is quite laid back, some minerals, biding their time behind the oak which delivers a layer of coconut onto the palate. Crisp finish, not as powerful or full bodied as usual but with some finesse. Was perhaps the highest in sugar, naturally, and not chaptalised. Drink from 2027-2032.
93-95 points
Jasper Morris MW - Inside BurgundyThis dynamic wine is blended from grapes purchased from two parts of the hill of Corton – most of it is from En Charlemagne in west-facing Pernande-Vergelesses, while nearly a third comes from a parcel in Les Languettes high on the slope in Aloxe. The two are very complimentary, and there is more of chalky minerality from the Pernand fruit and a riper, sweeter fruit with almost a hint of coconut from the Aloxe portion. The ripeness extends to the palate, and a density here carries the wine to the next level. Drink 2025-2055.

A much more floral-suffused nose speaks primarily of green fruit and just squeezed citrus. The delicious, racy and beautifully detailed middleweight flavors exude an abundance of minerality on the lemony, very dry and lengthier finish. Allen Meadows - BurghoundThere are two barrels of the 2021 Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru La Garenne, a medium to full-bodied, ample and racy white redolent of crisp green orchard fruit, waxy citrus, fresh mint and white flowers. Satiny, pure and precise, it concludes with a mouthwateringly saline finish.
89-91 points
William Kelley - Wine Advocate (Feb 01, 2023)The 2021 Puligny-Montrachet La Garenne 1er Cru has a succinct nose with Braeburn apple, Cornice pear and subtle petrichor scents that discretely unfold in the glass, but never get too carried away. The palate is well balanced with some new oak to be subsumed on the entry, fine depth, a little richer than other crus with orange zest perking up the finish. This has a very late malo and it requires the second winter in barrel to bind it together, but the potential is here. Drink 2025-2045.

Moderate reduction masks everything but a touch of petrol character. The attractively textured and generous medium weight flavors possess good underlying tension while displaying fine length on the clean and sneaky long finish. Allen Meadows - BurghoundThere's no Ancegnières this year, so everything is blended into the 2021 Chassagne-Montrachet Blanc, a medium to full-bodied, ample and elegant white evocative of pear, freshly baked bread, honey and mint. Precise and vibrant, without any asperity, it's a success.

William Kelley - Wine Advocate (Feb 01, 2023)The 2021 Chassagne-Montrachet Vieilles Vignes, a blend of four parcels, has a fragrant nose of wild peach and light Granny Smiths, the malic element indicative of its Puligny leaning origin. Here too there is enough reduction to render the nose difficult to assess. Otherwise, there is excellent punch and minerality to the beautifully textured medium weight flavors that conclude in a precise, stony and wonderfully refreshing finish. Allen Meadows - BurghoundThe 2021 Saint-Aubin 1er Cru Hommage à Marguerite was quite tightly wound when I tasted it, unfurling in the glass with aromas of pear, citrus oil, clear honey, white flowers, toasted nuts and fresh mint. William Kelley - Wine Advocate (Feb 01, 2023)The 2021 Saint-Aubin Hommage à Marguerite debuted five vintages earlier, a blend of Les Perrières, Les Combes and Les Criots. Allen Meadows - BurghoundThe 2021 Bourgogne Chardonnay is a notable success, exhibiting aromas of pear, toasted nuts and white flowers, followed by a medium-bodied, satiny and incisive palate. It's now derived from only three parcels—in Saint-Aubin, Puligny-Montrachet and Chassagne-Montrachet—since Colin lost his source in Meursault.

William Kelley - Wine Advocate (Feb 01, 2023)The 2021 Bourgogne Blanc comes from three vineyards in Puligny, Chassagne and Saint-Aubin. This is quite elegant on the nose, understated even with Granny Smiths and a hint of white peach. The palate is well balanced with a lovely texture, impressive weight for a regional white and with welcome "bite" on the finish. Enjoy over several years. Drink 2023-2030.

The 2021 Bourgogne Aligoté opens in the glass with aromas of lemon oil, freshly baked bread and pear, followed by a medium-bodied, satiny, racy palate that's quite giving and charming in what can be a taut, tangy white Burgundy vintage.

William Kelley - Wine Advocate (Feb 01, 2023)Mostly from 55-year-old vines in the Hautes-Côtes de Beaune augmented by vines in Chassagne, the 2021 Bourgogne Aligoté has a fragrant bouquet with apple blossom, linden and hints of Cornice pear. The 20% new oak is neatly integrated on the palate, a pleasant sharpness here, quite malic on the finish that cries out for a plate of fruits de mer. Oddly Muscadet-like in a positive way. A completely different aromatic profile presents its aromas of smoky hazelnut, white peach and lemon rind. The delicious medium-bodied flavors possess both very fine density and volume while exhibiting a subtle minerality on the clean, focused and bone-dry finale. Allen Meadows - BurghoundThe 2020 Meursault Village is a blend of prime lieux-dits Narvaux, Vireuils, Grands Charrons and Luchets. Mingling aromas of crisp green orchard fruit and white flowers with notions of hazelnuts, freshly baked bread and pastry cream, it's medium to full-bodied, chiseled and satiny, with terrific depth at the core, tangy acids and chalky structuring dry extract. This is well worth seeking out.

An attractively fresh if much more reticent nose only grudgingly gives up its aromas of newly sliced green apple, lemon-lime, anise and again, discreet wood influence. An elegant, airy and very fresh nose is comprised by essence of acacia blossom, pear, apple and anise along with a hint of mineral reduction. There is more volume to the minerally and sophisticated medium-bodied flavors that conclude in a citrus-tinged finale that offers excellent depth and persistence. This is a Charmes of punch and finesse. Drink 2029+.

Allen Meadows - BurghoundThe latest rendition of one of Colin's longest-standing cuvées is the 2019 Meursault 1er Cru Charmes, a lovely wine that exhibits scents of lemon zest, orange oil, fresh peach, pear, white flowers and buttered toast. Medium to full-bodied, layered and broad-shouldered, it's deep and lively, with fine concentration, chalky structuring extract and a mineral finish.

William Kelley - Wine Advocate (Jan 2021)3 x 350l barrels were made from the Genevrières side of the vineyard, picked on 7th September at 14.3% alcohol. Glowing almost dayglow lemon and lime. A bundle of energy here, very sensual, partly because there is still a final bit of sugar to finish at the moment. Hard to judge accurately yet, so my rating is cautious.
