2021 Chateau La Fleur-PetrusPomerol, Bordeaux, FRANCE$520. 00Bottle$6240.00 DozenClosure: CorkOther Reviews....
The 2021 La Fleur-Pétrus is performing nicely, exhibiting aromas of plums, cherries, sweet soil tones, loamy soil and licorice, followed by a medium to full-bodied, ample and seamless palate that's lively and charming. Classically proportioned and nicely balanced, if it takes on additional depth with élevage, I'd expect it to land at the upper end of my bracketed score.
91-94 points
William Kelley - Wine Advocate (Apr 30, 2022)The 2021 La Fleur-Pétrus is a regal, elegant wine. Rich and sumptuous, yet classically medium in body, the 2021 is impeccably balanced from start to finish. A rush of red/purplish fruit, rose petal, mint, blood orange and cinnamon build into the exquisite, layered finish. The 2021 reinforces my view that La Fleur-Pétrus is the wine to focus on in the Moueix range. Hosanna and, especially Trotanoy, are more famous, to be sure, but in 2021 those wines are heavily shaped by the growing conditions of the year, while La Fleur-Pétrus is simply La Fleur-Pétrus. Classic Pomerol as far as I am concerned. Drink 2029-2041.
93-95 points
Antonio Galloni - VinousVery polished with fine tannins that finish intensely. It’s a medium-to full-bodied red with focus. Blackberry and blackcurrant flavors. Hints of tobacco and nutmeg, too.
95-96 points
James SucklingUnquestionably one of the standouts in the Moueix stable is the 2021 Château La Fleur-Petrus, a beautifully balanced, medium to full-bodied, elegant Pomerol that readers will love. Vivid purple in color with lots of cassis and darker berry fruits, it has classic Pomerol graphite, damp earth, and chalky minerality, some background oak, perfectly integrated tannins, and a great finish. It's already hard to resist and is going to drink nicely right out of the gate.
94-96 points
Jeb DunnuckDeep garnet in color, the wine opens with flowers, chocolate, truffles, licorice, espresso, dark plums, and red pit fruits. Plush, soft, and polished on the palate, with supple-textured, silky fruits in the elegant and almost flamboyant, sensuous finish. This is really quite strong, especially when you consider the difficulties in the vintage. The wine blends 95% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc and 1% Petit Verdot. The harvest took place September 23 - October 6. Drink from 2025-2049.

Jeff Leve - The Wine Cellar InsiderSucculent and juicy straight away, this has a little party in your mouth giving the chalky strawberry, perfumed blackcurrant, dark chocolate, liquorice and pencil lead all together - bringing a ton of fruit, spice and acidity with thrilling results. You get a touch of austerity still, the minerality and salinity on the tongue but I love the expression here. Feels well worked, all in harmony with such precision on show. Pure class with a seductive core, gentle frame but intense concentration. Super long finish. The Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot really add that extra touch of deliciousness and intrigue. The star for me in the very impressive Moueix lineup this year. Drink 2027 - 2050.

2021 Chateau Certan de MayPomerol, Bordeaux, FRANCE$290. 00Bottle$3480.00 DozenClosure: CorkOther Reviews....
The 2021 Certan de May has also turned out nicely in bottle, bursting with attractive aromas of dark berries, cassis, licorice and fruitcake, followed by a medium to full-bodied, fleshy and dynamic palate with good depth of fruit, supple tannins and impressive length on the finish. As readers may remember, this Merlot-dominant blend incorporates fully 37% Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon, a figure that reflects the vintage (which favored these varieties) as well as a tendency to replant with Cabernet rather than Merlot over the last decade. Drink 2024-2040.
92 points
William Kelley - Robert Parker's Wine AdvocateThe 2021 Certan de May was picked from September 27 to October 11. There is a touch of herbaceousness on the nose here, a leitmotif of recent vintages that has left me perplexed in warmer growing seasons, though it’s more understandable in this vintage. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins and modest depth; no greenness here, but there is a welcome touch of pepper toward the finish. This is an improvement for a Pomerol that can hit the ball out of the park if so inclined. Drink 2028-2048.
90-92 points
Neal Martin - VinousGood depth and breadth of complexity here showing cassis, black plums, fresh blackberries, iron, cigar and dark chili chocolate. Plump and juicy on the palate with medium to full body and a long and juicy finish. Tannins are fresh and caressing. An excellent delivery from the vintage. Drink or hold.
94 points
James SucklingFragrant red cherries and milk chocolate, super-bright and vibrant from the first sip; the light, almost spritzy texture and touch of sweet and sourness to the red fruit makes this fresh and energetic. The fruit focuses on strawberries, raspberries and redcurrants with graphite edges that give the minerality and touch of salinity to the palate also which is so appealing. Lifted and fresh but this also has the deep core and tight centre. The acidity and red fruit are to the fore right now but there is no doubt this is a serious wine with class and a long ageing potential. One I retasted several times. Beguiling. Drink 2026-2048.

2021 Chateau TrotanoyPomerol, Bordeaux, FRANCE$580. 00Bottle$6960.00 DozenClosure: CorkOther Reviews....
The most muscular, structured wine in the Mouiex portfolio is the 2021 Trotanoy, a medium to full-bodied, ample and layered Pomerol evocative of cherries, licorice, loamy soil, black truffles and spices. Impressively concentrated and tightly wound, it will reward bottle age.
93-95 points
William Kelley - Wine Advocate (Apr 30, 2022)The 2021 Trotanoy was picked September 27 to October 4. This has one of the most marine-influenced aromatic profiles among the Pomerol wines tasted, very well defined and even uncompromising in some ways, revealing touches of iris flower and sea cave. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins. A typical Trotanoy structure: maybe aloof in some ways, yet compelling at the same time. Sappy on the persistent finish. This should turn into a very cerebral Pomerol that will appeal to those who adore this estate. Not for the first time, this is JP Moueix's star this year. Drink 2030-2065.
94-96 points
Neal Martin - VinousA very fine-tannined red with ultra-fine, polished and velvety tannins that run the length of the wine. Medium-bodied. Very classy.
96-97 points
James SucklingClassic Trotanoy austerity and structure define the 2021 Château Trotanoy, which is tight and reserved on the palate, with medium-bodied richness and ripe yet certainly present tannins. Offering solid aromatics of red and black fruits, graphite, liquid violets, and loamy earth, it has rock solid mid-palate depth, and while it's not massive, it's no lightweight either. It will benefit from bottle age.
94-96 points
Jeb DunnuckAsian spice, truffle, chocolate, espresso, fennel and dark red pit fruits are all over the place, on the nose and palate here. Classic, vibrant, refined, and also reticent at the moment, this reminds me in some ways of the best attributes from previous classic vintages that are now aged into maturity. The finish is filled with dark, red pit fruits, espresso, spice, and a touch of fresh mint with a hint of salted plums on the backend. The wine is produced from 100% Merlot. The harvest took place September 27-October 4. Drink from 2026-2055.
94-96 points
Jeff Leve - The Wine Cellar InsiderSmoked wild berries, with fragrant cherries on the nose. The texture stands out straight away, smooth, broad, muscular but also sleek, refined and precise. Flavours of bright cherries and raspberries with smoked earth and liquorice nuances coarse across the palate lifted by the acidity but not overpowered by it. The gently gripping tannins have a chalky, liquorice tang to them, settling on the tongue and providing the support and frame. This feels well worked, quietly confident - extremely well delivered and charming. It has both the concentration and glamour that Pomerol does so well. A layered but also lifted take on the vintage with clear ageing potential. Drink 2027 - 2050.

2021 Chateau Belair-MonangeSaint Emilion, Bordeaux, FRANCE$399. 00Bottle$4788.00 DozenClosure: CorkOther Reviews....
Offering up aromas of sweet cherries, cassis, pipe tobacco, loamy soil and spices, the 2021 Belair Monange is medium to full-bodied, supple and enveloping, with powdery tannins and a bright spine of acidity, concluding with a long, intensely saline finish. As young vines replanted on the plateau start to dominate the blend, the identity of this cru is becoming more and more marked, delivering wines of precision and sapidity.
93-95 points
William Kelley - Wine Advocate (Apr 30, 2022)The 2021 Bélair-Monange is a very beautiful wine. Fruit forward and punchy, the 2021 makes quite a first impression. Ripeness is naturally less pushed here than in recent vintages - that is the year - but it is a style that works so well, as this site offers plenty of richness on its own. A rush of inky red/purplish fruit fills out the layers nicely. There's not a ton of nuance or detail yet, but that will likely come in time. This is very nicely done. Drink 2031-2061.
93-95 points
Antonio Galloni - VinousMedium to full body with creamy, velvety tannins. Polished and plush. Pretty spice notes, such as white pepper and cloves to the ripe dark-plum and berry fruit. Some pine cones. Fine, ripe and textured. Concentrated for the vintage. Wonderful length, too.
96-97 points
James SucklingThe 2021 Château Belair-Monange continues to impress, and you could put this up with the top wines in the vintage with no issues. Floral notes of blue fruits, violets, chalky minerality, and spice define the nose, and it's medium to full-bodied on the palate, with a good mix of both richness and freshness, building tannins, and a great finish. Turning more mineral-laced, sappy, and floral as it sits in the glass, this is a complete, incredibly classy Saint-Emilion that will round into form with just a few years of bottle age. If you haven't heard of this château, trust me on this one, get on its bandwagon, as it's destined to be one of the greats in Saint-Emilion.
93-95+ points
Jeb DunnuckDeep ruby in color, the wine is filled with black raspberries, flowers, mint, and spices. On the palate, the wine is plush, soft, polished, fresh, vibrant, and long, finishing with crushed rocks, stones, chalk, and bright, fresh, red fruits, with just a touch of spearmint on the backend. The wine blends 99% Merlot and 1% Cabernet Franc, Drink from 2023-2049.
94-95 points
Jeff Leve - The Wine Cellar InsiderCool blue fruit touches on the nose, excellent acidity gives a rush of succulent and mouth watering cherry and strawberry fruit before this settles quite quickly revealing the minerality so characteristic of this estate. Chalky, wet stone and graphite touches come in with a saltiness that perfectly balances the sweet and concentrated red fruits. This feels refined and well worked with a brightness that is so enjoyable. The 1% Cabernet Franc gives structure and backbone. It's a light style, this is more delicate and refined and all the better for it showing the class of the winemaking and nuances of the terroir. A real beauty. Drink 2027 - 2050.

2017 Produttori del Barbaresco Muncagota Riserva BarbarescoPiedmont, ITALY$175. 00Bottle$2100.00 DozenABV: 14.5%Closure: CorkThe Muncagota vineyard looks South/East - facing cooler morning sunshine instead of the warmer afternoon sun. Because of this, it tends to show beautiful floral characteristics and often a specific mint character on the nose. Calcareous soil and a low level of sand gives to the wines of Muncagota extremely focused fruit and firm, stylish tannin. A perfect example of the elegant and intense qualities that make Barbaresco one of the most interesting and unique wines of the world.
Other Reviews....
The 2017 Barbaresco Riserva Muncagota plays some of its best cards in terms of texture, offering silky tannins, firmness and a long-lasting veil of fruit flavors. Cassis, wild cherry, camphor ash, spice and iron ore are aromatic protagonists. This wine is lean and compact but very linear and focused. Like the other Riservas in this group of new releases, the wine is fermented in steel and aged in large oak casks for 32 months. 10,000 bottles were produced. Drink 2024 - 2048.
94 points
Monica Larner - Wine Advocate (Jun 2022)The 2017 Barbaresco Riserva Muncagota is one of the lighter wines in this range. Floral and medium in body, the 2017 gives the impression of a wine that will open earlier than some of the others. It, too, has pretty imposing tannins though, so a few years in bottle are advisable. Crushed flowers, sweet red cherry, mint and white pepper linger. Drink 2027-2039.
92 points
Antonio Galloni - VinousOffers a bright, pure expression of cherry, strawberry, rose and grassy aromas and flavors underscored by a vein of minerality, with tannins that flex their muscles on the long finish. Bruce Sanderson - Wine SpectatorMountain hay, cedar, new leather and pipe tobacco aromas take center stage. 2017 Produttori del Barbaresco Ovello Riserva BarbarescoPiedmont, ITALY$175. 00Bottle$2100.00 DozenABV: 14.5%Closure: CorkOvello is the northernmost vineyard in the village of Barbaresco and among the first 5 single-vineyards produced back in 1967. Soils are calcareous and rich in clay: these characterics combined with the cooler microclimate shape its exuberant fruit profile and its fuller body. Due to its powerful structure, some years of bottle ageing are usually required to balance that out.
Other Reviews....
One of the bigger productions (with 17,744 bottles) in the Produttori del Barbaresco's portfolio is the 2017 Barbaresco Riserva Ovello. All of the Riservas in this vintage are characterized by especially exuberant and bold aromas, and this bottle is a prime example. Cassis, wild cherry, tobacco, rusty nail and licorice build intensity. The wine is tapered and silky in texture, but it also offers a good amount of power (and 15% alcohol) to carry it through the aging process. Drink 2024 - 2045.
94+ points
Monica Larner - Wine Advocate (Jun 2022)The 2017 Barbaresco Riserva Ovello is a heady, explosive wine. I don't think I have ever tasted an Ovello from the Produttori with this much heft. The strong mineral and saline accents typical of this site are present, but they are matched pound for pound by notable mid-palate richness and intensity in its fruit. The 2017 is a brooding powerhouse that needs time to unwind. Drink 2027-2039.

Antonio Galloni - VinousTaut and sinewy, boasting cherry, black currant, grass, iron and tar notes. Powerful tannins drive the finish, which is compact for now. In the end, this is lightly astringent, but has plenty of drive and should find equilibrium with time. Best from 2026 through 2043.

2017 Produttori del Barbaresco Paje Riserva BarbarescoPiedmont, ITALY$175. 00Bottle$2100.00 DozenABV: 14.5%Closure: CorkPajè is in a small bowl facing South/West and it lies between the village itself and the famous Asili vineyard. The vineyard is slightly lower in altitude and more open to the Tanaro River influence, resulting in a cooler microclimate. The soil is limestone with a high calcium level and as a result the wine combines elegance and complexity with intense tannins; it is never shy in acidity. Pajè appears sharper and brighter in its first years, with lovely youthful fruit and flowery notes, almost minty in cooler vintages and is particularly attractive after some ageing, when the wine still retains a fruitful and fresh palate.
Other Reviews....
The 2017 Barbaresco Riserva Pajè is impressive on all fronts, but especially in terms of aromas. There's so much brightness here with red and purple fruits, rust and a dark note of clove or exotic spice. No element is out of place, but together they help to build the intensity of this balanced wine. It shows a soft, velvety texture, and perhaps there is a little more ripeness overall in this warm vintage. Production is 6,666 bottles. Drink 2024 - 2045.
94 points
Monica Larner - Wine Advocate (Jun 2022)The 2017 Barbaresco Riserva Pajè is a fine choice for readers who enjoy wines of freshness, verve and energy. Dark fruit, menthol, spice, pine and crushed rocks are beautifully delineated. This is an especially chiseled wine in the range of 2017 Riservas. I very much like the balance of richness and vibrancy. In a word: classic. Drink 2027-2039.

2017 Produttori del Barbaresco Pora Riserva BarbarescoPiedmont, ITALY$175. 00Bottle$2100.00 DozenABV: 14.5%Closure: CorkProximity to the Tanaro River creates a unique microclimate for the Pora, as well as a relative warmth in the early morning hours due to its proximity to the valley floor. The slightly higher soil fertility here gives to the wine a smoother character, with soft tannins and aromas that usually tend to open up in the early years of life. Pora is also one of the most historical vineyards in Barbaresco, as it was part of the property of Domizio Cavazza.
Other Reviews....
The 2017 Barbaresco Riserva Pora (with 13,333 bottles released) is usually the first wine I taste each year when I review this set of Riservas from Produttori del Barbaresco. That's because it usually appears as the most delicate, and the intensity of each successive bottle increases after this one. But these schematics are a bit more difficult to align in a hot and dry vintage such as this that produced richer and more succulent fruit across the board. The Pora is redolent of red and purple fruit with a little more blackberry and plum compared to previous editions. The tannic strength of the wine is also more elaborate. Pora works very well in 2017. Drink 2025 - 2048.
94 points
Monica Larner - Wine Advocate (Jun 2022)The 2017 Barbaresco Riserva Pora is rich, creamy and layered, with a bit more generosity than is typically the case. Sweet red cherry, red plum, spice and rose petal are amplified in a radiant, open-knit Barbaresco that will start drinking well in a few years' time. Drink 2025-2037.

2017 Produttori del Barbaresco Rabaja Riserva BarbarescoPiedmont, ITALY$175. 00Bottle$2100.00 DozenABV: 14.5%Closure: CorkRabajà produces a quintessential Barbaresco, one of the most complete and balanced of the single vineyards. The vineyard lies between the two main ridges that form the Barbaresco village, one starting at Rabajà and going West towards the Tanaro River and the other one that goes from Rabajà to Ovello, South to North. The meeting of these two different soils give Rabajà its incredible complexity. Bordering both Asili and Muncagota it combines the personality of those two great vineyards with and extra richness due to the South/West warm exposure.
Other Reviews....
The Produttori del Barbaresco 2017 Barbaresco Riserva Rabajà is another spectacular release from this cooperative winery that hits it out of the ballpark with each set of new releases. That impressive track record includes this wine that delivers extreme focus, depth and integrity. The bouquet is very clear cut with dark cherry, tart plum, spice and blood orange, but it is also complex and fluid. It offers new perspectives with each swirl of the glass. From a hot vintage, the Rabajà is smooth, powerful and balanced. I would bet on long aging for this bottle. 14,438 bottles were produced. Drink 2025 - 2050.
96+ points
Monica Larner - Wine Advocate (Jun 2022)The 2017 Barbaresco Riserva Rabajà is a potent, searingly tannic wine that will need a few years to come together. Brooding and backward, even for young Rabajà, the 2017 is painfully young today. It will be interesting to see what time brings. Today, the 2017 is a real powerhouse. 2017 Produttori del Barbaresco Rio Sordo Riserva BarbarescoPiedmont, ITALY$175. 00Bottle$2100.00 DozenABV: 14.5%Closure: CorkNot far from the Tanaro River lies Rio Sordo, in the southern part of the Barbaresco village. The light limestone soil with relatively low calcium content (compared to other areas of Barbaresco) produces wines where tannins are never dominant, instead they show a silky quality on the palate that makes them extremely attractive and seductive, never imposing and always elegant. Behind the smooth elegance however, lies a core of powerful structure and very well balanced tannins that give to the Rio Sordo its complexity and longevity.
Other Reviews....
The 2017 Barbaresco Riserva Rio Sordo (with 10,000 bottles released) has a mineral character and a sleek, firm approach that gives this wine its special identity. The wine is polished, almost glossy in texture with blackcurrant, plum and wild rose, and the tannins are gripping, although the Rio Sordo sports a lean to medium-rich density overall. Drink 2025 - 2048.

Monica Larner - Wine Advocate (Jun 2022)The 2017 Barbaresco Riserva Rio Sordo shows the natural intensity of the year, and yet retains a good bit of the aromatic lift that is so typical of Nebbiolo at its best. Cyril Brun considers the 2007 vintage more interesting for Chardonnay than 2008, and Charles Heidsieck's 2007 Brut Blanc de Blancs Blanc des Millénaires is certainly a compelling wine. JamesSuckling.comSeven up for Charles Heidsieck; the seventh release of their magnificent Blanc des Millénaires Champagne, the 2007. Their charismatic chef de caves, Cyril Brun, describes the wine as ‘dangerous’, as in dangerously good, and it is hard not to concur. The legendary Daniel Thibault, who made the first Blanc des Millénaires in 1983, was aspiring to make a very specific style of Chardonnay, rich and indulgent at the same time as being classical and rigorous of construction, a deft paradox in other words. The 2007, child of a cooler, more linear vintage than the rather heady 2006, has achieved this ambition with great aplomb. Cyril is confident that stylistically the 2007 will be closest to the 2004 and the 1995, both greatly lauded and both of which have had an unfailing capacity to win virtually every competition into which they are entered. The pale gold shimmers invitingly, its mousse discreet yet persistent, its aromatics hitherto dominated by notes of grapefruit, yuzu, citrus and quince, behind that sourdough, flint-stone and intimations of toast and honey, both of which will become more pronounced over the splendours of a long life. 20% each of five great villages, all but Vertus ranked as Grand Cru, have provided the raw materials for this most magisterial of Blanc de Blancs Champagnes. Dosed at 7.3g/L (the lowest ever at Charles) and disgorged in July 2021, with a smart new bottle design. Drink 2022 - 2032.

Sarah Ahmed - Decanter.comPaler and more evolved colour than the M&S 10 year old tawny port from the Fladgate Partnership (Quinta and Vineyard Bottlers). Much more complex, more concentrated and mature than the M&S 10 year old tawny. Lots of life, transparency and vibrancy. Pretty sweet but good tang and clean freshness on the finish too. Some nuttiness as well as the dried-fruit notes. Very smart fat clear-glass flask. Quite long.

Tawny Port is always exciting, but if you can afford to splash out, go for a 20 Year Old. All the major houses make wonderful aged tawnies and this is always one of the best. Ethereal and mellow on the palate, it boasts flavours of toffee and caramel, burnt orange and raisins, dried plums, hazelnuts and a savoury hint of mushroom on the finish. Wonderful stuff!

2018 Le Macchiole Paleo RossoTuscany, ITALY$270. 00Bottle$3240.00 DozenABV: 14%Closure: CorkOther Reviews....
You could argue that this wine changed Italian wine, because it was the first to fully embrace the potential of Cabernet Franc in the bel paese. The Le Macchiole 2018 Paleo has a spicy and tangy personality with dark fruit, bitter chocolate and tarry smoke. Coming back to my open bottle 24 hours later, I got some green olive and rosemary essence. The mouthfeel fleshes out considerably, and there is beautiful structure to hold it firmly together. Other vintners in Bolgheri have told me of their difficulties with Cabernet Franc in the 2018 vintage, which saw rain toward the end of the season. This wine feels magically immune to those issues and probably means that the expert vineyard team harvested at the right moment. Drink 2023 - 2045.

Monica Larner - Wine Advocate (Oct 2021)Le Macchiole's 2018 Paleo Rosso is an unbelievably beautiful wine. It is also very young. The aromatics are total seduction, but otherwise the 2018 is quite reticent. Bright floral notes and red-toned fruit give the 2018 considerable energy and verve as varietal Franc aromas and flavors start to take shape over time. Readers will have to be patient. The 2018 needs at least a few years in bottle to fully blossom. Even so, it is pretty appealing today. Drink 2026-2048.

JamesSuckling.comSince 2012 Paleo has been fermented in concrete tanks using selected yeast for almost 12 days, with temperatures held at 26°C - relatively cool for a red. It is then aged for 24 months in 100% new oak. Sometimes the use of second fill barrels is possible for the 25% of the wine, however all the time the toastiness of the barrels is long and light (very soft at the beginning then strong). The fresh 2018 vintage enhances the well known aromatic richness of this wine where the typical dried eucalyptus note is completed by menthol, vibrant clay minerality, leather and star anise. Elegant tannins and crisp acidity complete the picture. Drink 2021 - 2040.

2018 Le Macchiole MessorioTuscany, ITALY$520. 00Bottle$6240.00 DozenABV: 14%Closure: CorkOther Reviews....
Le Macchiole's 2018 Messorio is soft and rich with impressive depth and intensity, all delivered with the softness that only the Merlot grape can manage. This important wine unfolds first to rich cherry and blackberry and then yields softly to secondary notes of spice, baker's chocolate and toasted almond. There is some youthful tightness in the mouth, with Merlot tannins that are hitched to firmness and softness, while showing impressive length all the while. The mouthfeel is most impressive, thanks to its seamless and supple nature that glides smoothly over the palate. Drink 2023 - 2045.

Monica Larner - Wine Advocate (Oct 2021)The 2018 Messorio is an attractive wine, but it also feels like the most marked by the cooler style of the year. Readers will find a mid-weight Messorio endowed with striking inner sweetness and perfume, if not quite the textural richness that is the norm here. I have seen even the more delicate of Messorios blossom beautifully over time, and suspect that will be the case here as well. The purity of the fruit is remarkable. Drink 2026-2043.

JamesSuckling.comAccording to Cinzia Merli, producer of Le Macchiole, 2018 vintage is not her favourite. 'We can't compare it with the more red fruited 2017 and the concentration of 2019 is another matter,' she said. Having said that, this is one of her best Messorios of the last few years. On the nose it comes across as slightly herbal, with the leafy character of Merlot, loaded with restrained cassis, lead pencil and earthy clay minerality. Open-knit aromas of menthol are also present. The attack is smooth and velvety, with huge presence on the mid-palate where oaky tannins are still present. Full and refreshing with extremely youthful character. Drink 2021 - 2048.

Whistle Pig PiggyBack 6 Year Old 100% Rye Whiskey (700ml)UNITED STATES$114. 99Bottle$1379.88 DozenABV: 45%There have been a few iterations of the Piggy Back Rye, some finished in different barrels, others bottled at a higher ABV. This 'general release' for Australia aims to capture the classic, spicy side of the grain. It started in the summer of 2018, when late distiller, Dave Pickerell and Master Blender, Pete Lynch, returned to WhistlePig’s warehouses to realise their dream of creating the ideal rye whiskey for sipping and cocktails. It was launched in select US markets in 2019 as a permanent addition to the WhistlePig core range and was the final product Dave Pickerell created for the company before his passing.
It’s a 100% rye aged six years. The original was bottled at a purposeful 96.56 proof, in tribute of Dave Pickerell’s birth year – 1956. This edition lands at 45%. At that slightly lower proof it remains a charismatic whiskey that delivers the goods. The fusion of ripe peach and grain aromas also includes crusty rye as well as hints of ginger bread, vanilla and mint. Medium to full bodied, it's beautifully rounded in the mouth (borderline buttery) with a high ease of drinkability that lands on the sweeter side - think cardamon, cocoa, cafe cremes and fresh-baked rye with hints of anise lifting the finish. The expected rye spices don't fully develop, but this remains substantial enough to enjoy straight and will contribute texture to Manhattans, Old Fashioneds, Vieux Carrés and more. Keen eyed followers of the brand will note the pig that graces the front label is not wearing the standard WhistlePig top hat, but rather a Stetson hat in honour of Dave Pickerell’s favourite head-ware. The bottle is also a slight departure from the standard Whistle Pig shape, making it more manoeuvrable for bartenders. 45% Alc./Vol.
Other reviews... [96.56 proof bottling] The whiskey was created with cocktails in mind, but, as always, our review looks at the unadulterated product. Let’s dig in. The nose is boldly spicy in the way that 100% rye invariably is, with big cinnamon and clove notes complemented by a bold barrel char influence. Aromas of cherry pits, apricot, and an elusive tangerine note and some intrigue, but it’s the hint of maple syrup that drew me in the most.
There’s a lot going on, and with time in glass, the woodier notes begin to dominate, taking on a distinctly smoky character. That follows over the palate, which exhibits a lot of peppery bite at the start, though notes of salted caramel, gingersnaps, and banana walnut pancakes temper that heat. I get a mildly beefy edge later in the game, too. The finish isn’t as hot as expected, but it’s the lingering, somewhat raw spice quality that endures here the longest. All told it’s a fairly rustic spirit, a bit rough around the edges but dazzling in its complexity. Pickerell probably wouldn’t have had it any other way. - drinkhacker.com

Jack Daniels Sinatra Select Tennessee Whiskey (1000ml) - NO GIFT BOXTennessee, UNITED STATESReduced from $280.00$250. 00Bottle$3000.00 DozenABV: 45%Note: Product has come from a private collection and as such has some minor scuffing/scratches/handling marks. Actual product not pictured.
According to Alastair Smart, writing for the Telegraph, Jack Daniel's whisky was Sinatra's signature drink.
"He would rarely be seen for long without a tumbler in his hand. The Washington Post even went so far as to nickname him 'The Bourbon Baritone' (apart from 'Ol' Blue Eyes' another popular nickname was 'The Innkeeper'). The signal for party-time at Twin Palms came when Sinatra hoisted a flag bearing the Jack Daniel's logo above the mansion. It was perhaps fitting, then, that Sinatra was buried in 1998 with a bottle of JD slipped into his coat pocket."To commemorate the half century association between Frank and Jack, the Jack Daniels Distillery have released this special edition. Packaged in presentation carton with booklet.
Tasting note: Deep brassy gold. Offers a classic JD sniff with aromas of burnt orange, fresh sawn oak, dilute maple syrup, vanilla fudge and a peppery kick. The extra ABV makes for full bodied Jack. Lovely smokey oak/hickory key notes hover over latent vanilla, cinnamon and caramel. A tad grippy to finish but rounds off with an attractive sweet Bourbon flourish. A definite step up from the 40% ABV bottling. Try this on its own before drenching it with Coke. 45% Alc./Vol.
Other reviews... This new Jack Daniel’s offering is marketed as being “bold and smooth.” It certainly is bolder when compared to the standard Jack Daniel’s offering, with a mélange of corn, creamy vanilla, toasted caramel, bright citrus, and dry resinous oak spiked with cinnamon. The smoothness ends, however, when the oak grip intensifies on the finish. Adding ice does tame the oak, if that’s your thing. Still, I’d prefer the oak be more restrained.

If every Chambertin was like this, we could give up our job. So much spice, earthy and meaty character, but in the end it's the amarena-cherry fruit that wins out. Enormous concentration and finesse. Staggering purity of flavor. Then comes the spectacularly uplifting finish that just doesn't want to stop. Drink or hold.

Stuart Pigott - jamessuckling.comThis is also firmly reduced so if you're for some reason tempted to open a bottle, be sure to give it a thorough aeration. There is again excellent volume to the mouth coating and powerful larger-scaled flavors that exude both hints of minerality and bitter pit fruit on the lingering, focused and balanced finale. This firmly structured effort will need to add depth over time, but the underlying material appears up to the task. Drink from 2032+.

Georges Remy is a young, third generation vigneron crafting exciting Champagnes from his base in the Grand Cru village of Bouzy. The dark clay soils here are rich in silica and gypsum, and produces wines with enormous power and complexity. Spontaneous fermentation occurs in barrel and after aging on its lees bottling takes place following the lunar cycles.
Les Muits is made from a single parcel of 100% Chardonnay from the Premier Cru village of Tauxieres. While it's rare to find Chardonnay planted here, these specific vines are from a portion of the parcel which sits at the top of the hill planted over a bedrock of pure chalk. Vines here face south-east, and the parcel is made up of two massale selection plantings from 1971 and 1973. Production is a tiny 700 bottles.

This is the famous Cognac house's top-of-the-line offering, a truly stunning Cognac blended from around 1,200 different eaux-de-vie from the Grande Champagne appellation. The youngest material is at least 40 years old, while some of the spirit was distilled more than 100 years ago.“Louis XIII is not a Cognac,” they say at Rémy. “Put simply, it’s a moment.” It is the result of three generations of Cellar Masters, resulting from the combined labour of 10,000 people.
Reputedly, this has been a favourite of Elton John, Christian Dior and Winston Churchill. The latter celebrated his election with it in 1951.
The packaging of Louis XIII shares almost as much history as the Cognac itself. The idea for the glass came from an old bottle found by Emile Rémy Martin on a Jarnac battlefield. Since then, the carafe has evolved into its distinguished shape, manufactured by Baccarat since 1936. A solid gold collar encases the neck, which is adorned by a signature fleur-de-lys crystal stopper.

Highland Park Cask Strength Release No.2 Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)Orkney Islands, SCOTLAND$250. 00Bottle$3000.00 DozenABV: 63.9%For many, the inaugural cask strength release was one of the year's best whiskies and a glimpse into just how good Highland Park is when left uncut. Release No.2 promises the same extraordinary depth, complexity and balance of flavours. This time around, Master Whisky Maker, Gordon Motion, has selected mainly sherry seasoned European and American oak casks, along with just a few ex-bourbon casks. The whiskies included are of differing ages. Taste-wise, in a word (or three), he sums up Release 2 as "smoky peppered praline", adding “... its full flavour allows you the control to discover the taste and strength that appeals to your palate by adding ice or water according to your preference.” Guaranteed to pack a punch at a (slightly) higher ABV than last years. 63.9% Alc./Vol.
Other reviews... From sherry seasoned European and American oak casks. Sherry seasoned European oak can be tricky in my book, hope this won't have become too leafy or even leathery. Having said that, batch #1 of the C/S had been very good, in my opinion (WF 86). Colour: gold. Nose: not as smoky as the 15, rather more on sponge cake, caramel, fudge, butterscotch, stewed fruits or the trademark heather honey… With water: creamy honeyness and many stewed fruits and jams, especially our beloved quinces, also apples and pears. A perfect coastal side too, sea spray, even some iodine, mercurochrome, ointments… What's really great is that no clumsy sherry gets in the way, it's all well-integrated. Mouth (neat): I think I like it but I'm sure it is extremely strong. With water: more smoke and more coastalness. A tad too much on the leafy-sherry side indeed for me, with some bell pepper and even, say artichokes, but the general feeling remains extremely positive. All you need to do is to add the proper amount of water - no, zero water is not an option here. Finish: long, perhaps a tad too leafy and peppery at this point, which will make it lose one or two points in my book. Comments: a tad rough and rustic here and there, but it is to my liking. I have the feeling, not only at HP, that some newer sherry-seasoned casks have become leafier and more peppery, I don't know why. Because of European oak? Tonnelerias making them faster? Just a gut feeling... 85 points - whiskyfun.com
Notes from the producers... Aromas of summer rose, ripe pear and fresh coconut gathering on a wave of aromatic peat smoke, followed by a wild harmony of sweet and spicy flavours - poached pear and rich almond cake, a drizzle of cloudy honey and a twist of salty liquorice. There’s the suggestion of toasted oak and intriguing notes of orchard fruits, black pepper and sweet aniseed linger, in a satisfyingly long finish.

Glenlivet 12 Year Old Unblended All Malt Scotch Whisky (26 2/3 Fl. Ozs)Speyside, Highlands, SCOTLAND$399. 00Bottle$4788.00 DozenABV: 35%Note: Product comes from a private collection and as such has some minor scuffing/scratches/handling marks. Actual product pictured.
A 1970s bottling of the legendary Speyside brand that, after Glenfiddich and Macallan, helped popularise single malts globally. Good review from whiskyfun below.
Other reviews... Colour: light gold. Nose: it starts very grassy and grainy, but gets then quite fragrant and flowery. Not sign of bottle age whatsoever. Lots of lilac, peony… Then some aniseed, dill… All that is still quite restrained, alas, and the malt gets very grainy once all the flowery notes have vanished. Feint hints of sherry and crystallised oranges. Mouth: ah, now it’s getting better, yet it’s a little week. Dried fruits, aniseed, liquorice, dried herbs… Very classical but so nicely balanced! Some great notes of bergamot tea, fudge, Werther’s Originals… The finish isn’t too long but again very balanced, on cold herbal tea. Very good! 84 points - whiskyfun.com -

A charming Cardhu labelled as "Pure Malt" (although oddly, the box also says "single malt"), probably produced for the travel retail market and bottled through the 1980s. The malt from this distillery forms the heart of the Johnnie Walker blends, hence the striding man depicted on the front of the box. 43% Alc./Vol. -

Suntory Hakushu 18 Year Old Single Malt Japanese Whisky (700ml)Hokuto, Yamanashi, JAPANReduced from $1,999.00$1499. 00Bottle$17988.00 DozenABV: 43%Note: Product has come from a private collection and as such has some minor scuffing/scratches/handling marks. Actual product not pictured.
Production wise, Suntory's Hakushu distillery (pronounced "Hack-shoo") is the largest malt whisky distillery not only in Japan, but in the world. Built in 1973 coinciding with Suntory's 50th anniversary, it's set amidst spectacular pine forests close to the Japanese Alps. Suntory also purchased the distillery surrounds to protect water quality and conserve the local environment. In fact, water from the district is considered the best in Japan, something Suntory have capitalised on by bottling and selling it throughout the country. All the barley required for single malt whisky production here is imported from Scotland or elsewhere (including countries like France, England and Australia). The resulting whiskies make a significant contribution to Suntory's large number of malts and blends. Due to the distillery's height above sea level (700m), low pressure distillation occurs naturally, said to contribute to the light, fruity style of the whiskiesOther reviews... Unlike their colleagues in Scotland, Japanese distillers do not exchange stock for their blending requirements. This means that each distillery is set up to produce a wide range of styles. Hakushu uses four different types of malt (unpeated to heavy) run through four pairs of differently-shaped stills. Each single malt is a different blend of these bases. While still herbal, this example shows more sherried notes along with sour orange zest, tropical fruit, and some smoke. Complex. 43% Alc./Vol. 90 points - www.maltadvocate.com
…The delivery though, makes this malt worth finding because for 20 seconds or so we have absolutely everything in complete harmony, and the degree of barley sweetness is just about perfect. Then all is lost to the duller oak tones again.

Combier Guignolet d'Anjou Cherry Liqueur (700ml)Saumur, Loire Valley, FRANCE$39. 99Bottle$479.88 DozenABV: 17%Using locally grown 'guignes' (small wild cherries), this liqueur's almond scented nose is brought about by the fruit's stones which are included in the lengthy maceration. Its deep cherry-red colour anticipates the medium-sweet aromas of marzipan, maraschino and fruit cake that are echoed on the palate where a touch of sour cherry competes with subtle notes of crushed almonds; there's hints of icing sugar and cherry-ripe chocolate too, but there's also enough 'tartness' to hold it together. Typically served straight and lightly chilled, you can see why this light and breezy liqueur would work so well as a Summer aperitif or as an ingredient in simple cocktails (it's recommended with gin and vodka in particular). Other sources claim it adds a 'vintage gourmet' vibe to chocolate pudding or ice cream. Guignolet liqueurs were first produced in the 17th century at a Benedictine Monastery (La Fidelité de Saumur) nearby Combier. Mother Madeleine Gautron was chosen to be the prioress at just 23 years of age and part of the cloistered nun's work was making liqueurs, including the sought after Guignolet of Anjou. While the monastery has now disappeared, the liqueur remains. It was Gautron's recipe that her descendant, Georges Gautron is said to have entrusted to James Combier in 1890. Set in the medieval town of Saumur, Jean Baptiste Combier, a confectioner by trade, continues the tradition of using guignes grown in the orchards surrounding the distillery. 17% Alc./Vol.

Baron Le Grand VSOP Brandy (700ml)FRANCE$79. 99Bottle$959.88 DozenABV: 40%Yet another brand produced at Distillerie des Moisans, a 60-hectare estate in the town of Sireuil, half of which falls in Cognac's Fins Bois sub-region. - 2013 Giuseppe Quintarelli AlzeroVeneto, ITALY$799. 00Bottle$9588.00 DozenABV: 16.5%Closure: Cork
Giuseppe Quintarelli was known as ‘the Master of the Veneto’, and is the name behind one of the most renowned estates in Italy. Sadly, Giuseppe passed away in early 2012 and he leaves behind a legacy of producing remarkable wines with an outstanding philosophy, to his eldest daughter who continues to carry on the tradition of this great estate. With their easily recognisable hand scripted labels, these wines offer at glimpse into one of the world’s most faithful artisanal winemakers who was an ultimate believer in letting nature do her thing and in order for wines to reach their ultimate potential these wines were only released when he deemed them to be ready.
Quintarelli's Alzero has a cult following among his devotees with a reputation rivalling their benchmark Amarone. Using a blend of approximately 40% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Cabernet Franc, and 20% Merlot, the wine is made with the same appassimento drying technique as the Amarone which concentrates and intensifies the flavours. Following drying of between 60 to 100 days the grapes are put into vat and pressed after 20 days of maceration, and unlike other wines in the range, ageing for Alzero is done all in barriques. The first 24-36 months are spent in French barrels before being transferred to Slavonian oak for approximately 48 months before bottling.
- Tomatin Bourbon & Sherry Casks 12 Year Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky (1000ml)Speyside, Highlands, SCOTLAND$124. 99Bottle$1499.88 DozenABV: 43%
In 2003, Tomatin's 10 year old malt was replaced by the 12 year old. In 2009, a 15 Year was added to the line-up, which also includes an 18 year old and a 25 year old. More recently, this sherry-finished 12 Year Old was relaunched and by several reports, it's a noticeable improvement on the previous bottling. In fact, if you're looking for value for money, this fruity maltfest with a splash of sherry and tang of spice should tick all the boxes. As the name suggests, it comes matured in a combination of Bourbon barrels and x Spanish Sherry casks (reportedly Oloroso) for the last 6-9 months of ageing. Awarded a DOUBLE GOLD MEDAL at the 2019 San Francisco World Spirits Competition. 43% Alc./Vol.
Other reviews... The aroma of the dram is full of heather and forest moss. You will also discover stone fruits like apricots along with an assortment of hard candies. The palate is not as exciting as the nose with the whisky feeling a bit hollow and lackluster in comparison. The finish is full of wood spices more heather, but leaves you with a bitter taste in your mouth. 83 points - distiller.com
Notes from the producers... A rich, fruity aroma is the prelude to sweet flavours of ripe apples, pears and a subtle hint of nut before the long, pleasantly oily finish.

Benriach The Thirty 30 Year Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)Speyside, Highlands, SCOTLANDReduced from $1,199.00$999. 00Bottle$11988.00 DozenABV: 46%"A complete whisky." - whiskyadvocate.com
Along with its younger expressions, The Twenty One and The Twenty Five, The Thirty represents Benriach's “refreshed” core range. The acclaim for the new age statements has been undivided and consistently high, including some of the highest ratings in recent memory from whiskyadvocate.com. Though not always operational since its inception in 1898, the distillery has amassed a huge cask inventory meaning hundreds of distinct barrels can be blended into thousands of new whiskies. Currently, owners Brown-Forman have allocated this responsibility to Master Blender, Rachel Barrie. She's focused on maintaining an “orchard fruit-laden” profile, while also pushing to create more varied products, often with varying degrees of peat input. 'The Thirty' is her latest, and arguably greatest achievement to date. Like the rest of the new range, it comes matured in four cask types: x-Sherry, Bourbon, Virgin Oak and Port. The combination of Fortified wine and complexing smoke left one taster comparing it to "...mature port wine that's sat in a glass next to someone who was recently smoking a pipe." Extremely limited stocks.
Other reviews... Benriach digs into the vaults for this rare gem, and it’s a tour de force. The maturity shows at once, with an antique note of well-aged peat char and dark sherried aromas of dried figs and raisins. The palate offers flavors of cooked berries and baked apple, along with candle wax, dark chocolate, and roasted espresso beans. It all finishes with rich chocolate, old spice rack, and a parting note of ashy peat. A complete whisky. 95 points - whiskyadvocate.com, reviewed by: David Fleming 2021
