From estate vines planted in '86; raised in French oak (about 25% new) for 18 months. Though impeccably varietal, this skips any overt leafiness, leaning into cedar, mulberry, cassis, currant and a toasted nori regional note. Lifted cabernet perfume is there, though, along with both power and a certain refinement of delivery, with tannins expertly managed to pair with fruit weight. It’s fine value. Drink by 2030.

From 38yo estate-grown fruit, whole bunch pressed to French puncheons and barriques (25% new). No batonnage or mlf. A bright and medium-deep green gold. Aromas of yellow stone fruits, acacia, orange blossom and fresh vanilla bean are all present on the nose of this complex and powerful wine. The palate is rich and textured, yet equally refined and balanced. Finishes long and satisfying.

    Hendrick's Flora Adora Gin (700ml)
    SCOTLAND
    $99. 99
    Bottle
    $1199.88 Dozen
    ABV: 43.4%

Other reviews... The base spirit includes all the elements of Hendrick’s core distillate — including rose and cucumber, which already makes Hendrick’s on the floral side to begin with — but let’s see where these extra blossoms take us. The answer: Deep into the recesses of the perfume counter. Hendrick’s Flora Adora is — unequivocally — the most floral gin I’ve ever experienced, from start to finish. Aggressive notes of lavender and lilac give the nose a distinctly laundry-like feel, although the essence of grandma’s bathroom isn’t far away. Baby powder and potpourri wash out any semblance of juniper — or cucumber — though the rose petals linger. The palate is a slightly more complex than the nose, but only just so: This is still monstrously dominated by floral notes, washing out most everything else. Give those dried and fresh flowers time to dissipate from the tongue and eventually you earn a respite in the form of mild juniper and earthy angelica, but the trip into the forest is a decidedly lengthy one, and honestly not all that exciting of a journey. The florals here clash with just about anything you might decide to mix with it; Hendrick’s cocktail ideas are mostly loaded with fruit juice and sweeteners, but even those can only go so far in covering up the flowery explosion. The finish sees lavender and dryer sheets lingering just about forever. Maybe something you can use for punch at a Mother’s Day brunch? - drinkhacker.com

...This is the fourth entry into the company’s Cabinet of Curiosities series, the experimental side of Hendrick’s that is built around Master Distiller Lesley Gracie’s ongoing experimentation in the palatial splendor of the Hendrick’s Gin Palace in Girvan, Scotland. Gracie says that the series “aims to celebrate the peculiar and instill wonder,” with Flora Adora, as the name would suggest, putting special emphasis on floral botanicals and plants favored by pollinators. Gracie observed insects in the brand’s two climate-controlled gardens, saying “I was fascinated to see how pollinators settled on some plants more than others and it’s these blooms that I’ve carefully selected to create this botanical blend.”... On the palate, I’m getting big orange oil and fresh pepper in addition to the more expected floral notes, with heavy rose, violet and elderflower. The sweetness is quite strong for even a modern gin, which to me enhances that elderflower-type impression by reminding one of the influence of a liqueur like St-Germain. The gin does maintain a decent amount of prickly heat to it as well, though–certainly enough that it should stand out in cocktails. As for how one would use Flora Adora, I find myself wondering if it might be a bit on the sweet side for some consumers when mixed with tonic in particular. I would be curious to see how this plays in some other cocktails, though–it would likely make an intriguingly floral French 75, or an oddly exotic martini. As it typically the case, Hendrick’s has gone out and made something unique, for which there are few comparisons. - Paste Magazine.

They remain the only Armagnac house to cooper their own casks from Gascony oak, maintaining quality control throughout the production process.

Loaded Barrel Small Batch Series Shiraz Barrel Single Malt Australian Whisky (500ml)
    Melbourne, Victoria, AUSTRALIA
    $139. 99
    Bottle
    $1679.88 Dozen
    ABV: 47%

'Accelerated aging' for a total of six years in two small ex-Australian shiraz barrels has resulted in another cracker. Perhaps it’s the red wine casks adding a little tannic grip, drying the mouthfeel slightly, though not nearly enough to out-do the succulence of the malt. Leaning towards red fruits, in moments, the fleshiness of overripe plums is almost tangible, dovetailing into Summer pudding. The distillery's signature sweet oak seals the finish. Very tasty but be sparing with water. Best over ice. 47% Alc./Vol.

Notes from the producers... this exceptional whisky is incredibly rich, robust, full-bodied. It boasts a delightful array of sweet flavours, including luscious blackcurrant and ripe dark plums, which are perfectly complemented by earthy and leathery undertones that emerge in the middle. As the experience unfolds, a lingering finish reveals a captivating blend of spicy cinnamon and a touch of pepper, leaving a lasting impression on the palate.

Kilchoman Batch Strength Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)
    Islay, SCOTLAND
    $164. 99
    Bottle
    $1979.88 Dozen
    ABV: 57%

Kilchoman's first ever core range batch strength release is drawn from a combination of re-charred red wine casks married with Oloroso Sherry butts and Bourbon barrels. The result is a colossal dram combining the natural peat smoke and citrus character of Kilchoman with dark fruits, rich spices and sweet caramel. Technically it's not cask strength but it's not far off. A few drops of distillery spring water were added to bring the ABV down to 57% before bottling without chill filtration. Says Kilchoman's Founder Anthony Wills “Batch Strength is a giant of a dram, it has a raw intensity, that I love.  But importantly, that power is balanced by a delicacy and finesse that speaks for the quality of our production processes in the stillhouse, and also the quality of casks used for maturation". If you've been waiting for a release that embodies Kilchoman’s robust, maritime character, in particular a Kilchoman with a strong salty bite, this is it.

Other reviews... Faultlessly made and sympathetically matured. 95.5 points - Jim Murray's Whisky Bible 2025-2026

This recipe uses Kilchoman matured in bourbon barrels, oloroso butts, and re-charred red wine casks, and combines the fruit and smoke really well. Red apple, red currant, black raspberry, heather honey, and salted caramel on the nose, with beach bonfire smoke turning peaty as it builds in intensity. Silky texture on the palate, with red apple, smoked plum, raisin, cherry pie, and a long-lasting finish with peppery spices running riot. 91 points - whiskyadvocate.com

This dram is delicious – the proof’s in the pudding, or to put it more plainly, in the remaining liquid level in the bottle, which is dropping at an alarming rate. So much so that I’d hedge my bets that when it’s finished, I’ll be planning to replace it fairly quickly, if the price is right. And price is the slight kicker here – there has to be at least one right? Retailing at around £75, it is rather higher priced than I’d have hoped, particularly taking into account that it is not in fact officially a cask strength bottling, although to all intents and purposes it drinks like one. Neither is it age-stated. So I’ll be keeping a close eye on any offers when it comes to replacing mine. Score wise I should be docking a point and giving this a 7 out of 10 Dramface rating based on the slightly high suggested retail price. However, I need to recognise how quickly I’m tearing through it. I’m loving this. It’s an 8. Would I recommend it? Yes wholeheartedly. I recognise how easy it is to reach for of an evening, and know it is in the great drams category. - dramface.com

This is the younger vine bottling, coming mainly off vines planted in '08. Up to three weeks on skins; maturation in steel and old puncheons and foudre. This is a nice foil to the Old Vine bottling, showing what relatively youthful vines can do on this great site. There’s an open red-berried and cherry fruitfulness, with red florals supported by savoury spice and a foundation of purposeful natural tannin. This doesn’t have the mineral depth of the Old Vine, but the fruit vibrancy and exuberance yield their own rewards. Drink by 2030.

First bottled in 1977, I Sodi di San Niccolò quickly established itself as one of the pioneering Super Tuscans, notable for being crafted entirely from indigenous grapes, 85% Sangioveto (Sangiovese) and 15% Malvasia Nera. The fruit comes from Castellare di Castellina’s oldest parcels in Castellina in Chianti, where low-yielding vines grow at 430m on limestone-rich soils. Fermented in stainless steel and aged for 24 months in French oak (half new), the wine has long been recognised for its structure, depth, and longevity, and remains Castellare’s flagship bottling.

Cocoa powder and red berries on the nose, some softly ferrous notes with tobacco and rose florality. Thick and glossy but lively with lots of life and energy. This is broad and powerful, complex and muscular with flesh and chew. Tannins are grippy but they're joined by mouthwatering acidity that lifts the expression. Sun-kissed black fruit and spiced on the finish. It still feels a little compact at this stage, but is full of concentration and finesse with graphite, slate and a bloody tang on the finish. Grapes come from the best two crus of the estate. 2021 saw the latest harvest ever at the estate finishing on October 20th. Winemaker Alessandro Cellai. The 2021 I Sodi di San Niccolò is a powerhouse. Many recent vintages have been showier, but not the 2021. It's a wine that is going to require many years to shed its baby fat. What I mean by that is that there is a delicacy immediately evident, savoury broth and crushed rose petals on the opening, gentle woodsmoke and fragrant raspberry leaf and redcurrant fruits. Its tannins give a gentle caress. Alessandro Cellai winemaker, 66% new oak, 10 months in bottle after barrel ageing.

Produced by Sengetsu Shuzo in Kumamoto Prefecture, Koi Shisou is a rice shochu-based liqueur infused with premium red shiso from Kyushu. Free from additives or colouring agents, its vivid crimson hue and bright, herbaceous character come naturally from the shiso itself. With a gentle sweetness and refreshing lift, it’s a distinctive, expressive liqueur.

Tasting Note: Blushing and vibrant pink in the glass, this liqueur makes a bold statement. The nose is complex, with cherries and strawberries harmonizing with sweet-savory red bean soup notes, while layers of watermelon skin and a faint medicinal touch element add intrigue. The palate focuses on bright, sweet red fruits—plums, watermelon, and strawberry—all lively and expressive. Despite the sweetness, it's refreshingly light and never cloying. A joyful liqueur, perfect over ice on its own, or topped with soda water.

Two exceptions to the Highland standard are mainland distilleries that use peat for their entire output: They are Benromach and the newly re-opened Brora. Ardmore is the third smokey Highlander, but they also offer an unpeated malt for the blended market. At Benromach, most of the barley is peated to around 10-12ppm, but for a few weeks of the year they dial that up dramatically. This latest instalment sees the phenol levels peak at 57ppm (that's higher than Ardbeg!) Bottled in 2023 and matured in first-fill bourbon barrels, the whisky boasts fragrant vanilla notes, which lead to lemon sherbet and apricot, finishing with smoky bonfire embers. It's what some tasters describe as "the dirty side of Speyside". 46% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered

2022 Cellier Saint Benoit Arbois Pupillin La Marcette Chardonnay
    Jura, FRANCE
    $220. 00
    Bottle
    $2640.00 Dozen
    ABV: 15%
    Closure: Cork

Benjamin Benoit is fast becoming one of the Jura’s most exciting voices. Working in Pupillin with traditional methods and minimal sulphur, his site-specific wines offer a precise, elegant expression of Jura terroir. Cellier Saint Benoit sets a new standard for quality in the region.

This Chardonnay is grown on Triassic marl soils in the south of Pupillin at 335 metres altitude, on a plateau above Les Charots. The 0.5 ha vineyard is home to 65–70-year-old vines planted by Benjamin’s grandfather. La Marcette ripens earlier than neighbouring sites due to its exposure and elevation, producing concentrated fruit with lower yields. The wine is whole cluster pressed and aged in neutral oak barrels. The resulting expression is broad-shouldered yet structured, shaped by its sunny disposition and deep-rooted vine age.

    Other Reviews....
The 2022 Chardonnay Arbois Pupillin La Marcette unfurls with white peach, blossom, green apple and a tropical slice of melon. Medium- to full-bodied and generously concentrated, the 2022 boasts remarkable intensity. A solid backbone of acidity helps to retain vivid freshness. Already drinking superbly at this early stage, this will gain more complexity with a few more years in a cool cellar. Drink 2024-2028.

Sourced from the high-elevation (368m), west-facing slope of Viandris, where Chardonnay vines—planted by Benjamin’s grandfather around 1960—grow in intensely limestone-rich soils. The site yields naturally low quantities of concentrated fruit. Whole cluster pressed and aged in neutral oak, this Chardonnay is structured by its site’s mineral-driven profile and old vine depth. A hallmark expression of high-altitude, limestone-grown Jura Chardonnay.

    Other Reviews....
The terrific 2022 Chardonnay Arbois Pupillin Viandris opens with dried honeysuckle, chamomile, lemon peel and ripe yellow apple. Flinty characteristics, wet stones and pears add more layers. The flintiness becomes more pronounced on the energetic palate, delivering a powerful punch with its elevated flavor concentration, all superbly balanced by a vibrant core of acidity. Every single one of the 1,022 total bottles produced is worth the chase. Drink 2024-2033.

From a 0.28 ha parcel of northwest-facing vines on steep (30%) slopes of classic blue marl at higher elevation than Chambines. The 70-year-old Savagnin vines were planted by previous generations and are now farmed for a topped-up, non-oxidative (ouillé) style. The wine was whole cluster pressed, fermented, and aged on lees in a single old 228-litre barrel, then bottled unfiltered. The blue marl soils contribute intensity and salinity, resulting in a complex, site-expressive wine.

Sourced from Savagnin vines primarily in Les Chambines, on marl soils typical of the Jura. The wine was a barrel selection with preference given to the most restrained and tightly wound example, considered best suited for extended sous voile maturation. Aged for over nine years in a single cask stored in the domaine’s custom attic (rather than humid cellars), allowing the veil of flor to develop under more oxidative and dynamic conditions. This longer aging exceeds the legal minimum of six years, encouraging greater salinity and tertiary development. Bottled unfiltered from a single cask.

    Other Reviews....
The last Vin Jaune of Benjamin's father was bottled in March 2025, a sublime 2014 Vin Jaune, with notes of smoke and peat, some iodine and tons of textbook morel mushrooms and spices. This had a much longer élevage than the requirement from the appellation. It aged in a warm cellar and therefore with more oxidation, evaporation and concentration and comes through as really powerful. Drink 2025-2045.

While the origins of this domaine date back to Charles-Louis-Noel Billaud in 1815, it's the current generation winemaker Samuel Billaud that has made waves with the exceptional quality of his wines produced since the creation of this project in 2009. Following the sale of the family business Domaine Billaud-Simon to Faiveley in 2014, Samuel received further prized parcels of land and now makes wines from five of the grand cru vineyards, and five of the top premier cru vineyards. The wines are vinified in a mixture of stainless steel and large old wood barrels, the latter mainly for the premier and grand cru wines.

A ripe and nicely fresh nose combines notes of mostly citrus and white orchard fruit. There is both solid volume and energy to the delicious middleweight flavors that conclude in a refreshing, nicely dry and zesty finish where a touch of spritz slowly appears. There is plenty of classic Chablis typicity to the ripe yet cool and fresh aromas of lemon-lime and iodine. An amply powered yet refined Barossa Shiraz that finishes long, savoury and peppery.

Bete Noir is a blend of old-vine Shiraz from the Barossa and Eden valleys, specifically, six different parcels from the sub-regions of Moppa, High Eden, Light Pass and the Eastern Foothills. Soils vary across the sites, from thin, skeletal sandy loams in the loftier plots to the classic sand-over-red-clay in the Moppa and Light Pass regions. Vineyard age ranges between 25 and 110 years, with “45 years being a fair average across the blend”, Schell reckons.
The proportion of whole clusters varied from “everything to nothing” depending on the vineyard, with roughly 35% in the final blend. Maturation occurred in 35% new French barrels―ranging in capacity from 225-litre to 4500-litre―for 20 months before fining without filtration.
Impenetrable pitch black heart with a deep dark red black tinged hue. Soaring out of the glass are liquorice, dark plum, black cherry and blueberry scents complimented by smoky vanillin cedar, fennel, dried clove and peppered dried meat notes. Rich and succulently fruited, the medium to full bodied palate is layered with black cherry and liquorice flavours which are framed by a sturdy yet nicely integrated tannin structure. Lending complexity across the back half are dark plum, fennel, subtlety smoked vanillin cedar and peppered meat elements. Amply powered yet refined in its feel it finishes long, savoury and peppery.

"Another muscular, rich Port Charlotte, with a special mention for the gorgeous nose. " - whiskynotes.be

After Octomore, Port Charlotte is the most sought after label in Bruichladdich's portfolio. Both are heavily peated styles that don't require long maturations and both have rather obscure numbering systems associated with their titles. In the case of the latter, the letters typically stand for the type of cask used (e.g.- PAC = Pauillac), while the numerals refer to the edition number. Most Port Charlottes are limited runs compared with Bruichladdich's core expressions. The whisky in question is an eight year old made from Concerto barley peated to 40 ppm and matured in first-fill American oak for six years before a two year stint in red wine casks from Pauillac (left bank Bordeaux – both first-fill and second-fill French oak casks). PAC01 first hit the European market in mid 2021, so we're going back in time.

Other reviews... This year's edition of the Port Charlotte Cask Exploration Series was aged in French oak red wine casks from Bordeaux's Pauillac region. Sweet peat on the nose, honey, sugared banana slices, vanilla flan, barley sugar, green apple, and fresh-cut grass. The palate offers charcoal, bonfire, and pepper spice, with water taming the peat and drawing out candied lemon, orange, apricot, sweet tea, and cinnamon spice. A fiery but serenely refined peat profile. 92 points - whiskyadvocate.com

Matured for 6-7 years in bourbon barrels then re-racked into ex-Pauillac red wine casks. Colour: gold. Nose: I actually find it extremely fresh and pure, all on wet rocks, seawater, sea spray, brine and then these softer notes of ink and hessian. Impressions of coal smoke and peat embers. Really lovely nose! With water: really doubles down on this impression of hessian, tarry rope, creel nets, ink and oily sheep wool. But still also quite saline and fresh. Mouth: a little more spicy encroachment from the French oak now, pickled onion Monster Munch (a delicacy, look it up!), sardines in olive oil, tar, embrocations, paprika. Ever so slightly unusual but still works I think. With water: water seems to brush aside these spicier oak tones and it's now more on green pepper, miso, smoked olive oil, tar, medical embrocations and a little plasticine. Finish: long, quite a lot of lemon oils, tar, caraway, iodine and pickling juices. Comments: I think the finishing here was done with a light touch and worked pretty well. There's no sense of overly-lopsided red wine sloshing about the place. Same quality as the Origins in my view. 87 points - whiskyfun.com

Notes from the producers... Nose - Lots of fresh, fruit aromas mingle with the dry peat smoke to entice you into the dram, from the oak comes spices - cloves, ginger and cassia, along with chocolate, toasted malt with toffee, brown sugar and delicate coconut and vanilla notes. Palate - As the first drop touches your tongue a wave of flavours sweep across the palate, the sweetness from the oak and malt lead, followed by smoke, citrus and dried fruit notes. Finish - The peat smoke comes through on the finish with a more medicinal phenol style. Coconut and floral notes waver and a saline marine element combine with the earthy smoke in the classic Port Charlotte style. The softness of the oak and the minerality of the spirit become wrapped in smoke, a familiar signature to this dram.

    ABV: 12.5%

Vignerons Schmölzer & Brown is the partnership of winemaker-viticulturist Tessa Brown and architect Jeremy Schmölzer, crafting wines from high-altitude vineyards in Beechworth and the King Valley. Their estate vineyard, Thorley, sits over 700m ASL and is farmed with organic practices in all but the most challenging years. Working with minimal intervention, they focus on purity, balance, and drinkability. The range includes single-site wines from Thorley, Brunnen, and Obstgarten, as well as their approachable Prêt-à series.

Sourced from the Corsini family’s La Cantina vineyard in the King Valley, this Barbera was destemmed, crushed, and fermented on skins for two weeks before basket pressing. Malolactic fermentation took place in tank or seasoned puncheon, followed by two rackings before bottling. Deep magenta in colour, it bursts with berried fragrance and bright, juicy flavours—best served chilled for an hour to enhance its vibrant charm.

The folks at Schmölzer & Brown say that they have “very little impact on this wine’s violent fruit expression”. As in, it’s all there and there’s no stopping it. They also describe this wine as “our chilled red”, which it absolutely could be, though it also of course drinks very nicely at room temperature. It’s awash with red and blue berries, florals, twiggy spices and cool, mountain herb notes. Basically it’s crunchy, spicy, fruity and flamboyant, in the most drinkable or smashable of ways. This is great drinking right now. Drink 2024 - 2028.

From the Corsini family’s La Cantina vineyard in the King Valley. This is VS&B’s self-proclaimed chilled red. A little rubbery reduction on opening before this wine’s trademark aromas of cherry ripe and cherry pip followed by red florals, rhubarb and baking spices. Some air unveils subtle boysenberry and earthen notes, too. The palate is equally bright and playful, with bursts of red cherry, red apple, boysenberry, and blueberry framed by fine pithy tannins and juicy acidity. Chillable, yes, but delicious at room temperature. This has all the pop and crunch you need, with lovely bright fruit and ample spice complexity adding interest.

The inaugural Shiraz from Vignerons Schmolzer & Brown’s home vineyard in Beechworth’s highest reaches. Planted in 2014 on cool, north-facing slopes, Thorley’s climate delivers late-ripening fruit with naturally high acidity. This is a true cool-climate Syrah—dark-fruited, perfumed, and spice-laden, with olive brine, violets, and white pepper on the nose. Expect blackberry compote, layered silty tannins, and a fine, peppery length—Northern Rhône elegance with a distinctive Beechworth twist.

So good on so many levels. Delights the senses with its vision of a fragrant, elegant, spice-laced syrah showcasing the beauty of a leading cool-climate region. Complex in toasted spices, pepper, red cherry, plum, and briar running long across a smoothly textured, well-composed palate. Great balance. The cork with the words 'fidus in silvis silentibus' – faith in the silent forests – relates to the theories of Viktor Schaiberger, Austrian naturalist and philosopher. Drink 2024-2034.

Jeni Port - Halliday's Australian Wine Companion

There’s lots going on here. Earth, twigs, smoke, meaty pan juices, porcini mushroom, dark cherry, autumn leaves, forest floor and pink peppercorn. So invitingly savoury. This is an umami laden treat that’s hard to pull away from! The palate has trademark lift and glide in a medium bodied spectrum. Dark cherry, subtle mushroom and earth with a sappy edge. The finish is so finely spun with everything wrapped up in a vein of fine, integrated tannins and dark cherry drenched acidity. A long, even and clean finish. So little of this wine is about fruit, and it’s so damn good. Another classy, fine and brilliantly complex release from VS&B.

Old school Chardonnay that’s big on flavour and texture.

Winemaker Stuart Smith produces an old traditional style of Chardonnay that’s big on flavour and texture. The fruit is picked in several parcels across several weeks to ensure optimum physiological and organoleptic ripeness. In order to impart additional textural richness the wine was lees stirred and underwent 100% malolactic fermentation. Barrels were racked at the end of the first year, the wine then returned to barrel for an additional 6 months for aging. 40% new French oak is used.

Filling the nostrils are ripe peach, honeycomb and crème brulee scents followed by hints of butterscotch, bacon fat and spicy nougat. Some gentle bacon fat, cashew and spicy nougat elements ensue. Concludes long, ripe and well rounded yet brisk in its feel.

A blend of fruit from two estate vineyards in McLaren Vale, the split is Shiraz 82%, with Grenache making up the remaining 18%. The wine spent three years maturing in French oak, 15% of which was new. A dark maroon, this is plush, ripe, generous, soft and approachable. In other words, a guaranteed crowd pleaser. This is a wine full of flavour, we have notes of chocolate, dried herbs, blackcurrants, beefstock and tobacco leaves. Good focus here, this is a wine of medium length and fine balance. Sleek tannins making for very attractive drinking now and over the next five to eight years. Drink 2024-2032.
