The Fontodi 2017 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Vigna del Sorbo is expressive, dark and thickly concentrated. I received my samples early and found that this wine was a little shy or slow to open in this early phase. If given extra time, the bouquet warms up to dark fruit, plum, rum cake and dried violet. I came back to the wine about two hours later and discovered a pretty note of crushed aspirin or carbon, with more crushed flower. The oak adds sweet spice and scorched earth, but these too will integrate with time. From a hot and dry vintage, I'd easily give this edition of Vigna del Sorbo a 15- or 20-year drinking window.

The 2017 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Vigna del Sorbo is a dense, packed wine. It is also surprisingly, almost shockingly backward. That is probably a good thing for its long-term aging prospects. Readers hoping to get an early glimpse into the 2017 before it shuts down may have a hard time doing that, as today acids and tannin dominate. I expect the 2017 will be stellar in another 4-5 years and drink well to age 25-30 if not longer. Proprietor Giovanni Manetti gave the 2017 18 months in barrique followed by 6 months in cask.

Powerful, tight red with currant and plum character. Hints of new wood and bark. Full-bodied with dark berries and hints of dark chocolate, as well as other dark fruit. Flavorful finish. Solid. Needs time to open.

    Jacques Lassaigne Le Cotet Champagne
    Champagne, FRANCE
    $230. 00
    Bottle
    $2760.00 Dozen
    ABV: 12%
    Closure: Cork

Emmanuel Lassaigne is one of Champagne's most thoughtful and exciting grower producers, working with the chalky south and southeast-facing sloped vineyards of Montgueux in the Aube department. Lassaigne's extraordinary Champagnes are pushing the qualitative boundaries not just of the Aube but of the entire region. Farming in his vineyards is organic with cultivated soils and harvesting at full maturity. In the cellar, the wines ferment in wood and stainless steel, and they're disgorged by hand without dosage. The style is powerful and vinous but also racy and electric.

Please note: Disgorgement dates can vary. Please contact the store if you would like to check which disgorgement is currently available.

    Other Reviews....
Based on the excellent 2019 vintage, and derived from the lower part of the parcel in front of Lassaigne's winery, planted between 1964 and 1968, the newly released NV Extra Brut Blanc de Blancs Le Cotet wafts from the glass with aromas of toasted nuts, crisp stone fruit, citrus oil and youthful reduction. Medium to full-bodied, fleshy and textural, with tangy acids and a long, saline finish, its reductive profile means that it really rewards some time in the glass. Drink 2023 - 2038.

William Kelley - Wine Advocate (Aug 11, 2023)

This magnum of Le Cotet is starting to open now, with notes of smoke, truffle and brioche over ripe green apple fruit. The bright acidity carries the wine on the palate but doesn't overwhelm at all – the sensation is subtle elegance and finesse, with nothing shrill or harsh. The base is the 2011 vintage (aged more than a year in used barrels on the lees) with about 10% reserve wines; the blend was disgorged (with no dosage) in July 2015. This wine has dynamic freshness and impressive length and should continue to age in a proper cellar for years to come. Drink 2022 - 2040.

2016 Conterno Fantino Barolo Castelletto Vigna Pressenda
    Piedmont, ITALY
    $210. 00
    Bottle

    ABV: 14.5%
    Closure: Cork

    Other Reviews....
The Conterno Fantino 2016 Barolo Castelletto Vigna Pressenda (with 6,500 bottles produced) draws its fruit from a 1.2-hectare site in Monforte d'Alba with silty soils mixed with sand and clay. It opens to bright cherry and dried raspberry that set the tone for the abundant primary fruit that defines the bouquet. Those red berry flavors cede to cola, spice, mint and rosemary essence. There is an almost exotic quality here spurred forward by pressed blue flower and church incense. However, the big takeaway here is the sheer energy and resonance of this classic Barolo.

Monica Larner - Wine Advocate (July 2020)

The 2016 Barolo Castelletto Vigna Pressenda is bright, punchy and super expressive, with striking floral and mineral top notes that lend energy and brilliance to this mid-weight Barolo. The purity of the flavors is just striking. Medium in body, gracious and nuanced, the Castelletto has so much to offer. This is a super-classic wine that shows significant tension and austerity; I would give it a few years to soften.

This shows density and polish with lots of chewy tannins, which are medium-grained and give the wine form. Pretty ripe fruit in the center palate. Needs two or three years to come together.

The standout wine of this tasting, Camartina 2016 is the result not only of a balanced vintage of great quality, but the process of winemaking refinement which saw large casks being introduced alongside barriques for ageing. This has it all, and is still remarkably youthful. Intense cassis, cola and amaro aromas with a waft of menthol introduce a tightly coiled and sapid core framed by grippy, chalky textured tannins. The fruit is wonderfully precise and with good concentration. Dark cherry and blackberry align with balsamic herbs and bright acidity. Superb! Drink 2025 - 2050.

The 2016 Camartina is superb. As always, Camartina is 70% Cabernet Sauvignon and 30% Sangiovese, all from Greve's Ruffoli district, where Querciabella is located. At this stage in its development, the Camartina is driven by Sangiovese in its red-toned fruit, aromatics and acid profile. The 2016 is vibrant, saline and full of energy. I am so intrigued to see how it develops in bottle.

Ripe, sweet black currant, black cherry, iron, leather and tobacco flavors mingle in this tightly-wound red. Balanced, dense and remains focused and persistent on the lingering finish. Decant now, or age another year or two. Cabernet Sauvignon and Sangiovese. Best from 2023 through 2045.

The Conterno Fantino 2016 Barolo Ginestra Vigna del Gris comes from a site in Monforte d'Alba that has a big component of loose sand in the soils. These well-draining conditions add to the softness and concentrated aromatic intensity of Nebbiolo. In fact, the bouquet here brings us a medley of red and purple fruits with some ripe blackberry and plum. It shows a hint of pretty cherry sweetness with spice, tobacco and candied licorice. The mouthfeel is full and generous, and this supple Barolo wraps smoothly and luxuriously over the palate. Some 9,100 bottles were made.

The 2016 Barolo Ginestra Vigna del Gris offers a striking balance of density and the more floral, high-toned notes that are so typical of this wine. Dried flowers, rose petal, mint, sweet spice and cedar are all nicely lifted. Beams of incisive tannin give the wine its vibrant, energetic feel. I would drink it first among these four wines.

Crème de Cacao or chocolate liqueur is manufactured by maceration or percolation of cacao (cocoa) beans followed by distillation and sweetening. As with coffee, the best results are obtained by blending beans from different areas. It is available as either a colourless or brown liquid, the brown version often containing vanilla.

The history of cocoa and chocolate is well known to date back to the Aztecs of South America. The ‘plumed serpent’ is said to have bought it back from the ‘Lost Paradise.’ By consuming it one attained universal knowledge and wisdom. It came into vogue in Europe as a liqueur from the seventeenth century on, often being drunk through a thick layer of cream floating on the surface. 25% Alc./Vol.

2016 Figli Luigi Oddero Rocche Rivera Barolo
    Piedmont, ITALY

Rocche Rivera is a 2.5-hectare parcel inside the Scarrone cru located in Castiglione Falletto with sandy calcareous soils. The celebrated Rocche di Castiglione is located adjacent, and the Pira cru is directly above. Rocche Rivera enjoys an ideal position in one of the best-performing areas of the appellation in this classic vintage. The Figli Luigi Oddero 2016 Barolo Rocche Rivera is stunning, with a level of harmony and purity that makes an immediate and lasting impact. The wine shows pristine fruit aromas backed by wild rose, tar, ash and blood orange. Those aromas hang in perfect balance. The wine is firmly compact and solid in terms of mouthfeel, requiring a few extra years of cellar time to fully unwind. This beautiful 6,000-bottle release will hit the market in October 2020.

New leather, pressed rose, underbrush, dark spice and camphor are just some of the aromas you'll find on this extraordinary red. Full bodied, with depth and finesse, the elegant, structured palate delivers ripe Marasca cherry, crushed raspberry, liquorice and tobacco framed in firm fine-grained tannins. Fresh acidity provides impeccable balance and aging potential.

Warenghem Distillery Armorik Yeun Elez Jobic Single Malt French Whisky (700ml)
    Brittany, FRANCE
    $129. 99
    Bottle
    $1559.88 Dozen
    ABV: 46%

Armorik's new line of heavily peated single malts called 'Yeun Elez', sees the first release matured in a mix of ex-bourbon and ex-sherry casks, with the barley peated to around 50ppm. Made with Scottish malt using local water and pot stills, the whisky is named for a swamp considered in local legend to be the Gateway to Hell. The story goes, Tadic-Coz knew the secret and the ritual of locking the souls of ghosts in the body of a black dog. He instructed the young Jobic to guide the dog towards the door of the Underworld. The latter, going from presbytery to presbytery, led the black dog to the rector of Commana. Together, at sunset, they threw the black dog into the Yeun Elez swamp, condemning the ghost to hell.

Notes from the producers suggest medicinal peat (camphor, cloves) but supported by fruity notes of bananas, cooked peaches, and pastry (cream pastry). The smoke rounds the palate while hints of citrus add freshness. 46% Alc./Vol. Non-chill-filtered.

Other reviews... This is peated Armorik and Armorik is the real pioneer of Breton (and French for that matter) whisky – if you don't take some very small and somewhat unlikely earlier operations into account. They've been using Scottish malt peated to 50ppm. Colour: white wine. Nose: close to Ardmore, so rather 'lighter' than what those 50ppm suggested, but still clearly a peater, fresh, ashy ala CI, with some mint and some lemongrass. Some chalk too. It's clean, a tad uncomplicated, and yet very pleasant. Mouth: real good, pretty sweet, peaty and peppery, with some sweet apples and pears. This time we're thinking of peaty Benriach, even is comparison isn't reason. Finish: long, grassier, with rather what we sometimes call a 'farmy peat'. Comments: perfectly all right, just (probably) a little young, with edges that are still a little rough. Some progress for sure since last time I tried this expression. 80 points - whiskyfun.com

    BELIZE
    $260. 00

    $3120.00 Dozen
    ABV: 62.1%

Located on the eastern coast of Central America, Rum is the national drink in Belize - no surprise, as the country's sugar cane is of the highest standard, representing a considerable volume of exports. The local rum industry is dominated by 'Travellers Liquor' (est. 1953), a distillery based in Belize City. Specializing in molasses based rums and mainly supplying independent bottlers, the company gained its name from the success it achieved in serving travellers along the main route to and from Belize City. This natural strength release from French independent "Compagnie des Indes was drawn from a single cask at natural strength.

Notes from the bottlers... Nose: Sandalwood, cinnamon, and a symphony of sweet spices. A floral touch of elderflower, the prelude of an intense mouth. Mouth: Powerful with still both the spicy and floral notes. It is a very well- balanced rum, its high abv makes for a contained powerfulness. Finish: Long and expressive, roasted subtle notes of 75% cacao. 62.1% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

In a past life, Sorgente was a Rosso di Montalcino. In its present incarnation, we can now enjoy the Salicutti 2015 Brunello di Montalcino Sorgente with fruit harvested in the little vineyard plot beyond the winery. The bouquet opens to tangy and spicy fruit with forest berry, brambly fruit, cassis and pomegranate. Beyond that first layer, you'll find tar, smoke and cedar wood. This Brunello offers a mild, mid-weight mouthfeel with lean concentration and weight. There is a sour touch on the tannins, and the wine ends on a polished, glossy note.

Woodford Reserve Kentucky Straight Malt Whiskey (700ml)
    Kentucky, UNITED STATES
    $99. 99
    Bottle
    $1199.88 Dozen
    ABV: 45.2%

Another addition to Chris Morris's experimental repertoire is this unusual American Malt. Made from a mashbill of 51% Malted Barley, 47% Corn and 2% Rye, it's Woodford’s fourth release in their 'Distiller’s Select' portfolio and is expected to be a permanent line. Woodford have actually released three malted whiskeys in the past using all-malt mashbills, but the point of difference here is that it just exceeds the minimum legal requirements. The addition of a significant proportion of corn and rye means it should appeal to Bourbon and Single Malt drinkers alike.

Other reviews... A great bottle for bourbon and rye drinkers to dip their toes into the American Malt Whiskey category if they haven’t already. Woodford Reserve Kentucky Straight Malt Whiskey is an enjoyable whiskey not so much for any individual piece, but for what the product delivers as a whole. With the exception of the hotness of the palate, the rest of sip is well balanced. It’s priced right, will be readily available, and it stands out from Woodford’s other products. It probably won’t rank up there on anyone’s memorable whiskey of the year lists, but it will most likely please those who purchase it. The fact that the mashbill could easily be turned into a heavily malted bourbon and that it was aged in a new charred oak barrel, helps make this a great introduction into American malt whiskey. Hopefully Woodford Malt will open up people’s palates to a whole new category and encourage other large distilleries to try their hands in this space. 45.2% Alc./Vol. - breakingbourbon.com

You really got to like the lovely new all-white packaging, that sits right between lovely Laphroaig and lovely Balvenie. Colour: straw. Nose: IPA! Lagunitas or something – I’m still dying to find Lagunitas in France, but I digress – plus some toasted malt, apricot pie that spent a little too much time in the oven, some kind of grassy leather, and some green cardamom and green tea. Rather less fruity than I had expected. Mouth: solid body, and a much balanced arrival, between apples and juicy golden raisins, plus a touch of banana. Rather goes on what we already found in the nose, that is to say green tea, and even raw barley, not too ripe. A feeling of sugarcane (white rum agricole) and, once again ale that reminds me of the 12. Finish: rather long, always quite toasted and grassy at the same time, with some honeyed apple juice in the aftertaste, as well as a salty/peppery touch. Comments: less easy-easy than I had expected, this is pretty firm and even tense. Kind of ‘un-official’, you’d almost believe this is a small-batch bottling by some good indie bottlers. 85 points - Serge Valentin, whiskyfun.com

From 1990s plantings of cabernet sauvignon and malbec. Something something Saint Crispin’s day, but for me, Agincourt is synonymous with this grimy pub on Broadway, Sydney, on the seedy edge of Chinatown, which hosted sweaty dance parties to the early mornings of the late-90s.

Lovely drinking, easy drinking, lots of easy pleasure, plush and soft tannins a feature, mulberry and boysenberry fruit too. Joyous kind of feel, uplifting, fleshy and cuddly, with barley there tannins doing just enough alongside some sprigs of dried herb for detail and added interest, the finish just slightly too lemony tangy sherbetty. Surprisingly lush in profile, flesh and puddles of bombastic character and easy to enjoy. Nice. Drink by 2030.

The impressive line-up is opened with the pale-colored NV Manzanilla Deliciosa, which is produced with Palomino grapes from the Miraflores vineyard and aged for five years under yeast. It is a finer version of La Guita, easy to drink, with a sweet note of apples in the nose, a polished and gentle palate, ending with a saline touch. Drink 2013-2014.
I’ve often called Valdespino “the Romanee-Conti of Jerez.” Well, there, I’ve said it. To me they represent quality and tradition at the very top of the Sherry hierarchy. The winery, soleras and brands are old, registered in 1875, but with documentation about their commercial and winegrowing activities going back to the 13th century. Their recent history starts in 1999, when Jose Estevez purchases the company from the Valdespino family. Today Valdespino is the jewel in the crown of the Grupo Estevez, which also includes Real Tesoro and La Guita, who stock and age 35,000 botas of Sherry and own 800 hectares of vineyards, 56 of which come from the Pago Macharnudo, on pure white albariza soil, one of the best vineyards in the Marco de Jerez, and 17 hectares from the heart of Macharnudo are still fermented in bota today and form the core of brands like Inocente, Tio Diego, CP or Cardenal. All the wines were carefully and slowly moved to the new facilities of the Grupo Estevez on the outskirts of Jerez, where they continue their development under the supervision of Eduardo Ojeda, technical director, winemaker, who as a wine-lover is very aware of his role preserving these old soleras, wines and traditions.

Aptly named, the Minéral is infused with tremendous mineral and soil inflections that give a real feeling of gravitas. Crushed rocks, slate, chalk and citrus accents are some of the many nuances that emerge with a bit of time in the glass. This release is fabulous. It is also a reticent wine, though, so at least a year or two in bottle will help soften. Dosage is 3 grams per liter. Disgorged: April, 2020.

    Routin Blanc Vermouth (750ml)

    $503.88 Dozen
    ABV: 16%

Philibert Routin created this Blanc Vermouth more than a century ago incorporating plants, flowers and spices macerated in local Chambéry wine for several weeks. It continues to be produced in Chambéry using white Sauvignon and local Jacquère wines and an artful blend of eighteen botanicals (wormwood, Bourbon vanilla beans, thyme, cinnamon, elderflower and more). With a floral/herbal bouquet characterised by aromatic thyme, as well as light spice, its sweet, fruity taste make it delicious served straight, on ice, with a lemon wedge or a slice of pink grapefruit. Alternatively, try it as a long drink, diluted with sparkling water or slightly bitter tonic - an apéritif favourite.

Other reviews... Herbaceous aromas lead into a light bodied palate marked by mild pear sweetness, finishing light and crisp with hints of fresh-snipped herbs and cinnamon. Versatile; sip or mix. Best Buy. 16% Alc./Vol. 94 points - wineenthusiast.com TOP 100 SPIRITS 2019.

Storage advice: Unopened bottles of Vermouth should be kept upright, like spirits. Once opened, keep chilled. Like any fortified wine, Vermouth is sensitive to oxygen, which impairs its aromatic bouquet and its flavour. Refrigeration slows the process of oxidisation.

Other reviews... Benriach is a sleeper of a single malt, but that’s about to change. Part of a 2020 relaunch of its core line, this grabbed our attention with its sophistication, breadth of flavors, and lovely refinement. Much of the credit surely goes to master blender Rachel Barrie for creating a smoky whisky that both peat lovers and the peat-wary can enjoy. Rather than medicinal intensity, the peat is redolent of gentle, sweetly smoky fruits that integrate seamlessly with notes of vanilla, toasted almond, chocolate, blueberry, and bacon. It beckons like the wafting smoke of a warming autumn bonfire, then welcomes with its lush and velvety embrace. Number 3 in the 2020 Top 20.

With a September 2019 release date, the 2014 Barolo Vite Talin is robust, with broad shoulders and beautiful aromas of spice and herbs. There is a fullness and generosity to its meaty notes, while it shows a more rustic side when put side by side with the 2015: The tannins here make their presence well known, and the wine has a wild side overall. The Vite Talin is a wine that has a way of responding to difficult harvests like this one. The grapes survived for a reason, and what you get here is not your classic approach to Barolo at all. This expression explores new boundaries, and it will be a hard wine to forget. This Barolo was born following 25 years of experimentation, and only 2,200 precious bottles were made.

The 2014 Barolo Vite Talin is fabulous. Rich and ample in feel, the 2014 melds together the natural richness this heavily virused clone produces in its tiny yields with the freshness of 2014. Black cherry, licorice, spice, menthol and chocolate are all given an extra kick of textural richness in this positively stunning Barolo that is easily one of the most compelling wines of this tricky year. The cold, late-ripening year produced an exotic Barolo laced with hints of apricot and wild flowers that are unusual in Barolo.

The newest addition to the firm's iconic offerings, this is the result of 25 years of Sandrone's experiments with very old Nebbiolo vines. It's an impressive combination of power and finesse, opening with aromas of smoke, woodland berry, camphor, wild herb, new leather and truffle. The chiseled palate boasts youthful tension, delivering juicy Marasca cherry, strawberry compote, tobacco and tangy mineral set against a backbone of youthfully austere but refined tannins. Fresh acidity keeps it impeccably balanced. Hold on to this one and you'll be rewarded.

Don Papa Masskara is a limited edition celebrating the famous party on the Philippines’ Negros island, going by the name of Masskara (aka 'Smile party'). It's essentially the original Don Papa rum enriched by mixing in other local ingredients including honey from the Kanlaon forest, the Filipino citrus variety Calamondin and local Siling Labuyo chillies. The striking label was designed by Olaf Hajek.

Totally opaque black dark red colour with a bright purple dark red hue. Sailing out of the glass are perfumed like aromatics of spicy plum, red liquorice, blueberry and violets which are complimented by some clove, dried meat, earth and vanillin cedar notes. The elegant mid weighted palate shows plenty of finesse with a delicious mix of red and blue fruits overseeing a back drop of light clove, vanillin cedar and spicy pepper. Finishes vibrant and youthful with perfectly integrated fine grained tannins and a long refined red fruited aftertaste.

Shiraz from plantings in 1973. Underhill makes me think of Middle Earth and Tolkein, but here I assume it is something else, and damned if I have asked in 20+ years in the wine community of Australia. I really should. Meanwhile, this is a very good release.

Supple, long, savoury and bright, game meat and just ripe red berries in a cavalcade of flavour and delicious texture, rolls long, wonderful, with authority and a general sense of quality. Lithe and tissue-pappery tannins a treat, the feel just righteous. It’s a wine that hits the glass with a slosh of ‘yes!’, with the first whiff on the first nostril off an arm’s length. The first sip a ‘yep!’, and you’re on your way. It feels fancy and good, complex and interesting, easy on the palate and showing us all what shiraz can do when great. Drink by 2035.

A wine with long fingers and arms. It was grown on a single block of shiraz, planted in '73. It eats elegance for breakfast, berried fruit for lunch, herb and wood spice notes for afters. Plum, char, smoked herbs, fresh red cherries, a slip of creamy/smoky oak. The balance of this wine is an experience in itself. Best of all: it pushes out gloriously through the finish. Drink by 2036.

Vincent Paris is a native of Cornas, a Northern Rhône appellation famous for its steep, granite, terraced slopes. Vincent’s first vintage was in 1997, having inherited vineyards from his grandfather and purchased some from his uncle, legendary Cornas vigneron Robert Michel, on his retirement in 2006. The biodynamically farmed vineyards are located in various parcels along the southeast facing Cornas slope. Vincent’s Granit 30 and Granit 60 take their names from the slope and gradient of the vineyards and average vine age respectively. Vincent’s famed 100+ year old, 1.3 hectare La Geynale parcel, in the Reynard area of Cornas and owned by his family for four generations, is comprised of old vines planted by his great-grandfather in 1910.

Mineral-driven aromas of ripe black/blue fruits, peony, olive and exotic spices on the nose. Sappy and focused on the palate, offering gently sweet, mineral-kissed cherry and blueberry flavors that deepen slowly with air and show sharp delineation. The blue fruit note drives an impressively long, spicy finish that's given subtle grip by fine-grained, even tannins.

Lovely ripe freshness to the fruit, really bright summer pudding aromas. Mouthcoating fruit and tannin, very fine tannin. Acidity is surprisingly marked. Plenty of ripe tannins, they're quite lively, textural, fruit-derived. Very juicy, very fruity, concentrated and ripe. No great depth, very accessible. 10-year-old vines, all destemmed.

Other reviews... A new NAS at low strength, hum-hum… Colour: deep gold. Nose: easy and malty, typically malt for the upper blend drinkers, so some kind of access-category malt whisky, in the league of Cardhu and Knockando. Guinness, Mars bars, a touch of pinewood, some gentle earth, and of course, many roasted nuts and toasted cakes. Shall we call it ‘rather Chivassy’? Mouth: good! It’s often on the palate that things go a little off the track with these cheaper malts, and indeed I’m finding it a little thin and a little too caramelised/caramelly, but other than that, there’s some fine chocolate and quite a lot of toasted bread and brioche, plus notes of maple syrup. Roasted peanuts. Finish: medium, rather coating, malty and chocolaty. Nice raisins and nuts. Comments: a no brainer, perfectly well made. No one will find this wee baby unpleasant.

Francois and Marc Darroze are the watchful and patient custodians of 250 different Armagnacs, including more than 50 vintages (spanning a century), sourced from the western portion of the Bas-Armagnac region, historically referred to as Grand Bas-Armagnac. Little surprise then that uber critic Robert Parker named Marc’s father, Francois, “the Pope of Armagnac”.

Around 30 estates contribute to their "Unique Collection" with each barrel finishing its ageing in the Roquefort and Labastide d’Armagnac cellars. These are rustic spirits, entering the alembic via small vineyards, distilled by reputable mobile distillers, each demanding several decades of careful ageing in oak barrels in order to express a sense of place and vintage. The typical Armagnac grower raises a range of animals fed by many different crops, plus a small vineyard, part of which is distilled every year and aged in one or more barrels which constitute the savings of the farm. A sick bull, a dying horse or a retiring tractor are repaired or replaced by the sale of a barrel. Multiply the number of farms and vintages and you have the dizzying variety of the Darroze collection: Different because each farm is almost as unique as each barrel. Add to this zero reduction (only through ageing), no caramel colouring as well as labeling transparency and you have Armagnacs that are all about the time in oak (once in glass, nothing improves or changes. An 1890 Armagnac bottled in 1900 is no better than a 2007 bottled in 2017, but collectors don't want you to know that!)

Alluring rosewater top notes are followed by lychee and citrus fruits with some oily toast and ginger spice notes in the background. A restrained, and equally pure, cool and airy nose reluctantly offers up a pretty array of red and black pinot fruit, rose petal, spice and an interesting hint of orange peel. The sleek and wonderfully refined flavors are lacy but punchy while also brimming with minerality on the tension-filled bitter cherry pit-infused finish that exhibits excellent length. This is lovely stuff though a wine that will require at least some patience.

Mostly blended but still in barrel, the 2018 Cote Rotie Ampodium is a terrific introduction to the Côte Rôties of Rostaing. Mulberries and licorice appear on the nose, followed by savory notes of espresso and black olives on the medium to full-bodied palate. It's silky, fine and complex, with a long, softly dusty finish. I also tasted a richer, more structured lot from la Viallière that will be blended in, along with a terrific-looking barrel from Leyat that will add floral, raspberry and mocha notes.

The Savoie region is nestled within the French Alps, not far from Chambéry. Once one powerful wine region with 20,000 hectares planted on the complex slopes of the mountain, it's now a small region, totalling 3,000 hectares. Most of the vineyards have been replanted on the flat, where the machines can find their way but not the quality. However, in 1998, one very special slope called "Coteau de Cevins" abandoned for decades was brought back to life by the Mayor of the area Denis Perroux and Michel Grisard, one of the pioneers of biodynamics in Savoie. The Coteau de Cevins once produced some of the most exciting wines of France.

The Coteau de Cevins was replanted in 1998 with the original, very qualitative vines of Persan and Mondeuse noire (red) as well as Altesse, Roussanne , Mondeuse blanche, Malvoisie and Jacquère (white). The slope reaches 60% of inclination, and the vines are planted on terrasses of very old, complex mica schists, loam and sand. With 8,000 vines planted per hectare and 25 hectolitres per hectare produced, it is the Grand Cru hill of Savoie. Out of this magnificent hill, three wines are produced, called Quartz, Schiste and Améthyste. The first real crop was harvested in 2002. In 2005, Brice Omont was appointed wine grower and director of Domaine des Ardoisières, to pursue the work Michel Grisard had started.

In addition to the Coteau de Cevins, Brice Omont started to rent a vineyard on the Coteau de St Pierre de Soucy in 2008 in order to produce wines from clay and limestone soils and schist. The two Cuvée Argile white and red were born. In 2015, Brice Omont started to rent another vineyard of great quality Jacquère to produce Silice, a highly addictive cuvée of white alpine wine.

The Améthyste Rouge is a blend of two quintessential Savoie varieties, Persan and Mondeuse. It was fermented with wild yeasts and aged in neutral French oak for 18 months. It's concentrated and structured, with dense red and black fruits, licorice, and subtle pepper, finishing with brisk acidity and firm, gravelly tannins.

The Salicutti 2015 Brunello di Montalcino Piaggione is a mid-weight red wine with a deep and lasting aromatic impact. The wine offers very vertical or lifted aromas of dried fruit, cedar wood, tilled earth, cigar, cola and medicinal herb. It also shows a lot of balsamic character, and this is something I often recognize in warm-vintage Brunello, while it offers less primary fruit. The character here is ethereal and fragrant, shedding any monolithic tones you might expect of a wine of this depth and persistence. I would recommend a medium-term drinking window so that you catch the fruit before it fades.

Deep magenta. Intensely perfumed, mineral-tinged raspberry and cherry preserve scents are complicated by garrigue and Moroccan spice nuances. Juicy and appealingly sweet, displaying fleshy red fruit liqueur, spicecake and lavender pastille flavors that deepen steadily on the back half. Smoothly balances richness and energy and finishes extremely long and sappy, with smooth, harmonious tannins and a strong echo of candied flowers.

Due to devastating yields, there’s not much of the 2018 Châteauneuf Du Pape to go around, but it’s going to be worth the extra effort to track down. Based on 50% Grenache, 40% Mourvèdre, and the rest Syrah (and a splash of other permitted varieties), it offers a textbook, classic Châteauneuf du Pape nose of mulled red and black fruits, Provençal garrigue, ground pepper, and saddle leather. These all carry to a medium to full-bodied Clos des Papes that has thrillingly polished tannins, flawless balance, and a great finish. Made in a style similar to the 1999, 2004, and maybe a kiss of the 2006, it has the beautiful elegance (again, a Grand Cru Burgundy comes to mind) paired with plenty of intensity and length. I doubt it will shut down and it’s going to evolve nicely for 15-20 years or more.

Medium to full red-purple, still bright after five years, vibrant cherry and plum fruit aromas more than handle the oak on the bouquet; the palate is sumptuous, but not heavy, the cherry and plum flavours tracking the bouquet. This dark purple-colored wine exhibits notes of sweet plum, blackberry, and cassis intermixed with some licorice, chocolate, and espresso. It is a blend of 94% Shiraz and 6% Cabernet Sauvignon that tips the scales at 14+% alcohol. The wine is layered, unctuously textured, full-bodied with tremendous intensity, moderately high tannin, and a 40-second finish. The wine needs a good 4-5 years of cellaring. Anticipated maturity: 2006-2025. This Grange should ultimately merit a higher score when it is closer to its plateau of drinkability.

1800 is a 100% Agave Tequila. To understand how this distinguishes it from other Tequila, it is necessary to know something of the process by which tequila is produced. Although Mexico is famed as the land of the cactus, Tequila is in fact distilled from the fermented juice of the Agave Plant, (not a cactus) otherwise known as the ‘Century plant.’ The Agave plant resembles an unripe, oversized pineapple or spiked cactus which shoots a giant blossom that can take up to twelve years to produce. At maturity, it stands about 5 feet high, is bluish green in colour and has a heart or ‘pina’ . It is these hearts which are actually used in the distillation process, the sweet juice extracted by compression, steaming and washing prior to fermentation & distillation.

The fermentation stage determines whether the final product will be 100 percent agave or mixed ("mixto"). The highest-quality Tequila is made using only fermented agave juice mixed with some water. Mixto however, is made by fermenting and then distilling a mix of agave juice and other sugars, usually cane sugar with water. Mixtos made and bottled in Mexico can contain up to 40% alcohol derived from other sugars. Mixtos that have been shipped in bulk for bottling overseas may have the agave content further reduced to 51% by the foreign bottler. Mexican law states that all 100% agave or aged Tequila must be bottled in Mexico. 100 percent agave Tequilas are clearly labelled as such. Anything else is classified as a Mixto Tequila, however the term is seldom used on bottle labels.

1800 is today the number one selling aged super premium tequila in America. Rested in French oak casks to create a distinctive smoothness, it boasts an exceptional mellowness making it the ultimate shot.

Other reviews... The first whiffs reveal plump, toffee-caramel notes underpinned by an asparagus-like agave aroma; aeration unearths nuances of fennel, white pepper, sage and rosemary—a complex and engaging bouquet. Palate entry is vegetal, green and off-dry; at midpalate the flavor profile turns sweet and sour, fruity and oaky. Concludes on a bittersweet note that somehow closes the circle on the journey. 90-95 points - wineenthusiast.com

St. Agnes XO 15 Year Old Brandy (700ml)
    Renmark, South Australia, AUSTRALIA
    $129. 99
    Bottle
    $1559.88 Dozen
    ABV: 40%

From Cornwall in the early 1880’s came Dr. W.T.Angove with his young family to settle at Tea Tree Gully in South Australia. He established a practise as a country doctor and planted vines as a recreation. That venture into viticulture grew into wine making and then into distilling. It was in 1910 when that young enterprise extended to Renmark in the Murray River Valley where the sun and soil grow grapes particularly suited to making fine brandy. St.Agnes X.O. is twice distilled by the time honoured pot still method and then matured in oak wood casks. The blend of spirits is no older than its youngest part and by Australian law, for a brandy to be designated “Very Old” that youngest part must have been matured in oak wood casks for at least 10 years. By this rule, St.Agnes X.O. is more than 20 years old: in the blend some portion is up to 50 years old.

Despite being relatively young, this is arguably the St Agnes that's closest in style to Cognac, albeit a very full-bodied one - cask strength or perhaps single cask. It is marginally lighter and less profound, but has an elegance and finesse that sets it apart from the older bottlings, like a VSOP cognac that almost outperforms the house XO. There's a superb balance of fruit sweetness with creme caramel and buttery oak matched by serious length and poise. It's world class. 40% Alc./Vol.

First tasted 2005... Age is revealed in its slightly glycerous, deep brassy / burnished copper appearance. The aromatics are heavy, sweet and sensuous with a superb amalgam of vanilla, honey, creme caramel with some fresh orange / raisin fruit cake notes underlying. Entry is soft and silky with a plush, semi sweet profile that includes dates, dark chocolate and cinnamon. Very gently warming spirit. Super fine, dusty tannins dry the mid palate; finishes fresh with a persistent orange cake, caramel and cocoa fade that returns late and with surprising intensity. 94 points

Other reviews... This brandy is all about the subtle integration of fruit and oak. At 15 years of age, it’s impressive that the oak hasn’t taken over, showing serious attention to detail in the cask selection and blending process. A delicate nose of waxed fruit hints at real power despite the relatively low alcohol, and the oak is a teasing rather than aggressive presence. The easy-going palate reveals layers of marzipan, orange cake, and gentle tannin, making it effortless to drink. This has long been one of my favourite Australian spirits, so I’m trying not to let confirmation bias get in the way, but there’s nothing to fault. The texture is there in spades, a difficult achievement when grapes have far less naturally occurring oils than grains. 95 points - Fred Siggins, James Halliday's Australian Wine Companion

Further notes from the producers: St. Agnes XO Brandy is a deeply coloured, full-bodied and extremely complex spirit. The extended marriage of spirit, wood and time has produced an aromatic brandy with subtle rancio aromas evident. The palate is smooth, dry and long with a nutty oak aftertaste. It is a brandy that because of its complexity, finesse and elegance has become the benchmark of Australian aged brandies. A prodigious winner of medals and trophies at local and Euopean Wine Shows, St. Agnes 7 Star XO Very Old Brandy is Australia's most highly awarded premium brandy. It has on two occasions won a World Championship Trophy .

    Wild Turkey Bourbon Whiskey (700ml)
    Kentucky, UNITED STATES
    $59. 99
    Bottle
    $719.88 Dozen

Wild Turkey was first created as a hospitality gesture for a group of wealthy sportsmen seeking the remarkable wild turkey bird. In 1893 Bourbon made by the famous Ripy brothers at the distillery was selected from more than four hundred whiskeys to represent Kentucky at the World's Fair. After the repeal of Prohibition in 1933, the old Ripy distillery was put back to work creating what many consider to be the finest bourbon ever to come out of Kentucky. Wild Turkey has since become something of a bench mark.

This reduced strength version of the original eight year old 101 proof debuted in 1974 in response to market demand for lower proof bourbon. Aged for at least four years (although others say 6 to 8) it's distilled according to age-old Kentucky traditions and matured in charred white oak barrels. Style-wise it's a more masculine Bourbon that while drinkable neat or with a splash of water, really works best as a mixer. Whisky Advocate say you can expect "Very traditional bourbon notes of caramel, vanilla, mint, cinnamon, sweet corn, and orchard fruit."

    Little known fact...
Since 1992, Wild Turkey Bourbon has provided title sponsorship of the National Wild Turkey Federations National Turkey Calling Championships. Each year, about 30,000 avid sportsmen and wild turkey enthusiasts flock to the annual convention and sport show. Spectators gather to watch contestants cluck, putt, purr and gobble their way to the highest level of 'turkeydom.' The competitors use box and slate calling devices, as well as mouth diaphragms, tubes and their natural voices!

Other reviews... Attractive traces of walnut oil amid the soft corn and firmer rye on the nose. An immediate impact of massive oak-laden, liquoriced corn and firmer more mouthwatering grains. The finish sweetens with a slight stirring of honey. It's not just the extra strength that takes this into a different class from the 80 proof. Much better barrel selection, underlined by some suprising liquorice notes Easily the best non-age-stated standard Wild Turkey I've ever come across.

    Finlandia Vodka (700ml)
    Helsinki, FINLAND
    $69. 99
    Bottle
    $839.88 Dozen
    ABV: 37.5%

Finlandia is produced using Finnish six-row barley. Distillation takes place at the state-of-the art distillery of Koskenkorva, Finland. The water used in its production is naturally filtered through glacial moraine and is considered so pure that it’s used straight without any chemical filtration.

The product was first launched in Scandinavia in 1970, and in the U.S. market one year later. Originally targeted towards the American consumer, it was later introduced into the world's key markets between 1977-1983. Since the 1990’s, Finlandia Vodka’s popularity has steadily grown and Finlandia is today available in over 100 countries making it one of the world’s leading premium vodkas.

No doubt Finlandia’s packaging has had some influence on the brands international success. Through its various incarnations, the Finlandia Vodka bottle has always conveyed the impression of an ice-cold drink from the frosty North, embodying the most desirable qualities of vodka: purity, clarity, icy chill and refreshment. The original label featured two white reindeer sparring against the midnight sun low on the horizon. Finlandia’s original visual identity was slightly adjusted in 1983. The twist cap colour was changed from red to blue, and a light blue tint was added to the glass to increase the perception of clarity and purity. The bottle also became slightly more broad-shouldered and the label colour altered from the original black to navy blue. From 1990 onwards, the reindeer relations were changed: three reindeers trotting ahead in unison, creating the sense of dynamic movement. The new, now familiar Finlandia Vodka bottle was first launched in 1998. The bottle is minimalist in style, slenderized and modern. The paper label has been dropped and replaced with lacquered text with the closure now being a stylish silver toned cap.

Tasting note: Clear, colourless appearance. Mild stone fruit nose. Smooth and supple on the palate with a light-to medium-body and mellow grain and fruit notes. Finishes very smoothly with just a hint of alcohol and peppery fruit. A well made, extremely easy to drink style of vodka. 37.5% Alc./Vol.

Jose Cuervo Especial Reposado Tequila (700ml)
    Jalisco, MEXICO
    $68. 99
    Bottle
    $827.88 Dozen
    ABV: 38%
    Closure: Cork

In 1795, when José Cuervo (Cuervo meaning "crow") began commercially producing and distributing tequila, he used an image of a crow to label each barrel of his product for the many customers who couldn’t read Spanish. This branding mark represents the Cuervo family name and was also used to brand their cattle. In creating this memorable symbol of tequila, José Cuervo proved himself to be an early innovator in packaging design. It seems the crow has been, and always will be, affiliated with the time-honoured quality and legacy of Jose Cuervo Tequila, as well as Tequila itself.

There are two basic styles of tequila: Gold Tequilas, which typically display a pungent aroma, more oaky dryness, spice and more complexity than their silver counterparts. White or Silver Tequila is an altogether simpler drink – clean and colourless, sometimes with a pronounced ‘fruity’ character, sometimes earthy, deep and pungent. It is the style most often used in mixing, its flavour being more subtly disguised. This gold tequila from Jose Cuervo is made from Blue Agave and a blend of Reposado and other aged Cuervo tequilas. Its distinctive character and consistent quality has helped consolidate Cuervo's position as the largest manufacturer of tequila in the world.

Jim Beam Pre-Prohibition Style Rye Whiskey (700ml)
    Kentucky, UNITED STATES
    $69. 99
    Bottle
    $839.88 Dozen
    ABV: 40%

Rye whisky was the traditional American saddlebag whisky. It is, as its name suggests, simply made using a larger proportion of Rye as opposed to corn. Rye whisky must be produced at no more than 160 proof and be aged in new, charred oak barrels for at least two years to be designated 'straight'.

Tasting note: Amber gold. Some piercing rye spiciness that's also minty, mustard-like, then the sweeter base notes enter edging the bouquet towards rye-heavy Bourbon. Nice intensity with medium dry flavours suggesting dried dill and spearmint over background vanilla and bubblegum. Peppers up at the finish which is vibrant, warming, minty, mildly tannic, medium long and try to style. Value buy. 40% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... Very similar to how Jim Beam Yellow Label was over 20 years ago. In other words: Simply Superb!

...Nose: Oily. Hemp-like, very aromatic. Palate: Again, very oily. Minty. Moving to orange. Becomes very fruity and succulent. Expressive. Flavoursome. Finish: Sweet. Lingering. Teasing. Comment: I have always had a sneaking admiration for this whiskey, and have long wondered why it is not more widely available. It is as though the Jim Beam family quietly accommodates its crazy cousin.

A very sought after JD collectible.

Folks who knew Mr. Jack Daniel best also knew his name was really Jasper 'Jack' Daniel. This was the name raised in warmth over a formal dinner toast, engraved on invitations to his home for a special celebration or monogrammed on fine glass decanters of whiskey reserved for his own use. Jack Daniel's Monogram release celebrates America's revered gentleman distiller with a warm, amber sipping whiskey, bottled at 94 proof (47% Alc./Vol.) and packaged in a manner worthy of the formal signature of Jasper 'Jack' Daniel.

Australian Jack Daniel's collectors will be pleased to know that our American and European friends for once, will have a harder time procuring this gem than most.
One Jack Daniel's enthusiast's web site reports:
'Okay guys and girls, here it is, the ever so elusive Jack Daniels Monogram bottle. As we all know, this is the Holy Grail of the new Jack Daniels bottles - if you've got one in your collection, you can count yourself very lucky indeed. According to my sources, this bottle was produced specifically for the Far Eastern/Asian markets. As such, it is not available in the U.S. or Europe, and this is one of the reasons it is so rare and hard to source. This bottle and packaging was designed by Michael Osborne Design of San Francisco, the same company which designed the Jack Daniels Silver Select bottle. It comes in a beautiful leather pouch with the 'Monogramed' letters 'JD' in silver lettering on the glass itself...'
