2017 Conti Costanti Brunello di MontalcinoTuscany, ITALY$240. 00Bottle$2880.00 DozenABV: 14%Closure: CorkOther Reviews....
The Conti Costanti 2017 Brunello di Montalcino is nicely layered and concentrated, with an immediate delivery of black fruit, spice and potting soil. This vintage shows a savory personality more than it shows a sweet one, and the tannins are quite soft and velvety. This is an open-knit Brunello from a hot and dry vintage to drink in the medium-term. Drink 2024 - 2038.

Monica Larner - Wine Advocate (Feb 2022)A vibrant style, this features strawberry, cherry, floral and mineral flavors, with hints of tobacco, iron and underbrush chiming in as this turns more compact on the finish. Has fine overall balance and length. Best from 2024 through 2042.

Bruce Sanderson - Wine SpectatorExtremely elegant and focused, this compelling wine defies the heat of the vintage, starting with a heady fragrance of ripe dark-skinned berries, violet, camphor, dark spice and whiffs of crushed herbs. On the linear, elegantly structured palate, tightly woven but extremely polished tannins accompany juicy Marasca cherry, blood orange, licorice and white pepper while fresh acidity keeps it balanced and fresh. Drink 2025–2032.

Kerin O'Keefe - Wine EnthusiastAndrea Costanti has crafted an appetising and characterful 2017, expressive without being over-exuberant or pushed. He reports doing more extraction than usual, with extended post-fermentation macerations as skins were thick and healthy. The tannins are textured and gritty without being green or bitter. While this doesn’t have the profoundness of 2016 or the silkiness of 2015 there is much charm in its vigour. Polished wood, subtle smoke, plum and bay leaf emerge from a backdrop of dry, dusty earth while concentrated acidity keeps it vibrant. One of the stars of the vintage. Drinking Window 2023 - 2032.

Certified organic. Fruit from the Isolation Ridge vineyard on the estate property. The nose is so fragrant that it takes some time to unpick it all. Winter mandarin, pink peppercorn, citrus blossom, blackberry, plum, licorice, clove, star anise, lavender and fennel flower. In the mouth, the graphite and black-tea tannins are a masterclass in svelte. They weave and thread through all aspects of the experience, becoming briefly savoury, before trailing out over a long finish. It is the tannins that reveal to us how inchoate this wine truly is. It needs time. It will be superlative. For now, it is tightly wound, coiled even and needs time to unfurl and show its potential. What a profound wine. Wow. Owns the Syrah moniker.

Erin Larkin - James Halliday's Australian Wine Companion
The integration of oak and fruit is excellent here. Smoky bacon and black cherry flavours come across as seamless and united, apple juice acidity and raspberry notes adding freshness and brightness respectively. The smokiness of this wine is overt but positive, the assertive but well-folded (grainy) tannin likewise, so too the gentle woodiness bitterness on the finish. What I like most here is that there is flavour at every step: in the tannin, in the acidity, in the body and in the finish. Drink 2024 - 2033+

Campbell Mattinson - The Wine Front (April 2022)The intensity and grainy nature of this wine sets it apart through extra length and persistence. The colour has remarkable depth and youthful purpliness, with aromas that leap out of the glass and smack of blackberry, cassis and raspberry, floral and with the subtlest suggestion of jam. In the mouth, it's soft and round, supple and medium to full-bodied, with a fruit sweetness that really charms. It tastes like a blend rather than a pure Shiraz (Viognier?). The tannins are mild and svelte. A lovely wine with a big future in front of it.

Huon Hooke - The Real Review (February 2022)Notes from winery....
Our SmithCullam Syrah comes from the original “Winery Block” of Syrah planted in 1988. The wine homes in on the powerful, grainy ferrous tones from the ironstone soils, offset by the elegance achieved from organic farming and shading afforded these bunches by the east-west orientation of the rows. The wine is matured in large-format (3,500-litre) oak, which contributes to its freshness and juiciness. There’s a beautiful interplay between the earthiness and iodine notes of the Mourvèdre and the generosity and aromatics of the Viognier.

The Kurayoshi Sherry Cask Pure Malt Japanese Whisky (700ml)JAPAN$134. 99Bottle$1619.88 DozenABV: 43%Produced in runs of around 1500 bottles, this sherry matured Matsui comes with very positive reviews from several quarters.
Other reviews... a plodding nose, but safe and secure with light grape and toffee on nodding terms; very young barley and toffee hold court until spice and dried plum notes begin to find their home; an unusual finale with an intense dryness at odds with the chest beating muscovado sugars; chewy and sticky, the youthfulness of this vatted malt is overcome by the intensity and richness of the malt and dark sugars. A complex, pleasing experience. 90.5 points - Jim Murray's Whisky Bible 2022

Suntory Ao World Whisky (700ml)JAPAN$199. 99Bottle$2399.88 DozenABV: 43%Released to Global Travel Retail in October 2020, this hybrid combines whiskies from the five most noteworthy regions in the world - Japan, Scotland, Ireland, Canada and the U.S. Suntory's Chief Blender, Shinji Fukuyo named the concept whisky 'Ao' meaning “blue” in Japanese, intended to evoke “the oceans that connect these distilleries together.” It's a whisky that pretty much does what the label suggests, offering a complex nose that wanders from sweet grains to more robust malt while also suggesting young Bourbon and trace smoke. Supple and integrated, the palate is a demonstration of Fukuyo's skills, starting out with faint citrus, vanilla and tea biscuits, building body and wood spice into the gently malty / smokey finale. It's followed by fruit'nut'chocolate and a light bourbon (or grain whisky) character through the aftertaste. Ultimately resembling a well-crafted malt-heavy blend, 'Ao' possesses some of the weight and character of a fruity Speysider, but with the grace and sweetness of an Irish Pot still or Canadian grain giving overall form and definition - especially through the finish. Also beautifully presented. 43% Alc./Vol.
Other reviews... The nose of the whisky evokes Scotch mostly, arguably a blend (which is fitting, considering that’s basically what this is) vs. a single malt. Notes of well-toasted, heathery grain, a touch of smoke, and some lemon-heavy citrus are all evident, along with a honey note that recalls some Irish bottlings. The palate doesn’t really shake the boat, offering a malty core that’s touched with milk chocolate and some vanilla — perhaps the Jim Beam showing through, though just barely. From there the whisky adopts an earthier note, sultry but subtle, and nodding at some of the more aggressive wood elements you’ll find in Suntory’s Japanese stock, finishing with a reprise of citrus, just a bit. The balance, much to my surprise, is impeccable. While you’d have to be a savant to pick out all the component elements, Fukuyo has put them together so artfully that one really doesn’t feel like they need to bother trying. As the highest-end of infinity bottles, Suntory Ao is one to seek out… next time you’re in an airport, anyway. It’s currently available at travel retail outlets only. - drinkhacker.com
"There's a very gentle mix of char and peat smoke on the nose. Sweet malt, toasted oak and a fruity note (mostly oranges) come through as well. The whisky is moderately rich on the palate with sweet/tart flavor profile mixed with barrel spices. There's a more than average length to the bittersweet finish. Very easy to drink. Overall, taste wise you get more of the European and Japanese whiskies coming through than the North American ones. Overall, an intriguing whisky, which for the price, makes a good value. " - distiller.com
Notes from the producers... aromas and flavours of orange peel, banana and mild spice in a multi-layered delivery that leads into a pleasingly smoky finish.

Glenmorangie The Elementa 14 Year Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky (1000ml)Highlands, SCOTLAND$159. 99Bottle$1919.88 DozenABV: 43%The Elementa is the second of Glenmorangie's new Travel Retail whiskies released in late 2020, in this case, celebrating the art of wood finishing. Thirteen years in bourbon barrels followed by nine to twelve months in charred virgin American oak casks results in an unusual age statement with sweet, woody depths and a spicy edge that's also creamy with notes of vanilla, lemon peel and crystalised ginger. One litre format. 43% Alc./Vol.
Other reviews... Nose: Quite gentle at first. Strawberries, dark chocolate and cracked black pepper, just a touch of aged balsamic. Slabs of toffee and rose petals, peanut brittle. Soft as possible wood notes. Oak chests. Palate: Sweet and all that honey comes in. Fruit as well with those strawberries, oak gets a grip. Fizzy sherbet. Treacle tart, jammy with plump blackcurrants. Finish: Long, sweet and honeyed, just a hint of bitter walnut skin to balance it. Ginger prickle eventually. Comment: Fairly well balanced and straight forward too. - whiskymag.com

- 2019 Domaine Pierre Boisson Auxey-Duresses Premier Cru RougeBurgundy, FRANCE$199. 00Bottle$2388.00 DozenABV: 13.5%Closure: Cork
Previously released under the Domaine Boisson-Vadot label, wines from their holdings are now made and presented under the labels of Bernard Boisson's children; his son Pierre Boisson and daughter Anne Boisson. While the two children vinify separately, they share the same cellar in Meursault, and produce wines that are more similar than they are different. Vine age is impressive, with many plots over 60 years old, and no herbicides or fertilisers used. Wines are fermented wild in barrel, thereafter raised in oak for 19-22 months, with no more than 30% new oak used predominantly for the top cuvées.
Red wines represent around 25% of production of the domaine and the Boissons are every bit as serious about their reds as their whites. All the Pinot Noir is 100% destemmed, with traditional, minimal intervention vinification. They undergo a cold soak before the gradual onset of alcoholic fermentation. The end of the vatting is deliberately drawn out by keeping the temperature down, to allow a process more akin to infusion than extraction. The family want the wines to be pure, fragrant, eminently drinkable.
Pierre Boisson forms this Auxey-Duresses from two premier cru parcels in Le Bretterin and Le Reugne with an average vine age of 40 years. Vinification includes a five-day cold soak followed by fermentation in stainless-steel vats with pumpovers and pigeage. The wine is settled over 10 days before being run to barrel for 18 months maturation in oak, 20% of which are new. Bottled by gravity, unfined and unfiltered.

Roselle is the common name for Hibiscus Sabdariffa. The bright red calyx at the base of its bloom adds colour and flavour to Maidenii’s new bitter. These vibrant colours and flavour are blended with 23 other botanicals including Australian natives, such as Strawberry Gum, Tasmanian pepper berry and Salt Bush. The bitterness comes from various roots, in particular gentian from Aubrac in the centre of France.
Roselle’s wine-base is Heathcote-grown Nebbiolo and Mourvèdre fermented as rosé, which is fortified with the unique blend of botanical tinctures. Sugars are entirely residual from the grapes, at around 100 g/l. The dryer, aperitivo style of bitter produced lends itself to a variety of pours. Looking like small grapefruits, the Asian Yuzu fruit has been the inspiration for several Japanese gins, aiming to retain its delicious sweet, sour and bitter flavours in harmony with the freshness of juniper. This is not the first time Four Pillars have experimented with the fruit. A limited edition collaborative bottling was launched in 2017. It was followed in 2019 with the Distiller Series 'Changing Seasons Gin' made with help from Japan's Kyoto Distillery. As of 2022, Four Pillars are including 'Fresh Yuzu Gin' as a permanent addition to their core range.
Mountain Yuzu, from the nearby Ovens Valley supply the Healesville-based distillery with fresh yuzus. Describing the flavour of the new gin, Co-founder and Distiller Cam Mackenzie comments, “Yuzu brings amazing aromatics that are a mix of lemon, mandarin, cumquat and grapefruit – all bright and fresh citrus notes – while the addition of finger lime adds some deeper citrus character. We’ve also learnt a lot (from the best) in our adventures making gin with Japanese friends, so in our take on Yuzu gin, we’ve used ginger, turmeric and sencha genmaicha, a Japanese green tea with roasted brown rice, for depth of flavour. A canvas of strong pine-needle juniper and a bit of lemon myrtle add a touch of lemon curd.”
Drink it however you like to drink your favourite gin, but it’s at its best in a Highball with plenty of ice, soda or light tonic and any kind of citrus garnish (best of all would be fresh yuzu, if you can find it!) 41.8% Alc./Vol.

First launched in 1996 and named after the heart of Jamaica, the Nassau Valley, the reimagined expression reveals "...a floral scent that develops into a unique mature nutty bouquet, with notes of vanilla, orange peel, nutmeg, almond, coffee and cocoa for a long, dry and luscious finish."
The blend of rare and hand-selected pot and column still rums have all been tropically aged for a minimum of 21 years. Jamaica’s Nassau Valley, 400 ft above sea level, surrounded by limestone hills ranging up to 2,000 ft, provides beautifully filtered waters to the Estate-harvested cane.
“Jamaica is a place unlike anywhere else in the world,” notes Master Blender, Joy Spence. “With Appleton Estate 21 Year Old Nassau Valley Casks, we wanted to celebrate our home in an elevated, modern way with a new sleek, sophisticated version...”
Rooted in traditions that go past the American Revolution, not much has changed at Appleton since the 18th century: water is still sourced from a spring on the estate, small batch pot distillation remains the norm, done on-site using a proprietary yeast strain propagated from the estate-grown cane. The estate's versatile blends have been quietly changing the perception of rum, with homes and bars across the country embracing the rum renaissance. 43% Alc./Vol.

Here there is no reductive funk as there is a lovely purity to the super-fresh and quite floral nose of red currants, spice and newly turned earth. There is an almost painful intensity to the highly energetic and tautly muscular broad-shouldered flavors that already offer impressive depth and sneaky good length. Despite having reasonable size and weight, this is not an especially big Bonnes Mares though it is one allied with plenty of power and punch. Drink 2036+.

Glenfiddich 18 Year Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml) - Older PackagingSpeyside, Highlands, SCOTLAND$220. 00Bottle$2640.00 DozenABV: 40%Note: Product has come from a private collection and as such has some minor scuffing/scratches/handling marks. Actual product pictured. No gift box included.
While the twelve year old is a relatively non-descript malt, older Glenfiddich bottlings are now gaining high praise including one award as the world's best single malt Scotch whisky. However, as a representation of the house style, the 18 year old pretty much nails it. Always a centre-piece of the portfolio, the company has further emphasised its place by redesigning the packaging to give it a more superior look than its 12- and 15-year-old stablemates.
The Glenfiddich distillery lies on the river whose name it bears. 'Fiddich' refers to the fact that the river runs through a valley inhabited by deers – hence the company's logo which features a stag. A proportion of the whisky in this version of Glenfiddich is supposedly even older than the label suggests.
Tasting note: Deep gold colour. Moderate aromas include honey, clove and vanilla laced malt. On the palate, dried apricots and spice are augmented by soft peat, adding depth to the toasty malt. Plush mouth feel. Clean, dried fruit and spice finish. Rich and round, in the mainstream of Sherry influenced malts. 40% Alc./Vol.
Other reviews... the smoke which for long marked this aroma, appears to have vanished...one of the most complex deliveries Speyside can conjure....long, despite the miserly 40% offered, with plenty of banana custard and a touch of pear; at the moment, the ace in the Glenfiddich pack. 2020 Domaine Vincent Paris Cornas Granit 30Cornas, Northern Rhone, FRANCE$74. 99Bottle$899.88 DozenABV: 14%Closure: CorkVincent Paris is a native of Cornas, a Northern Rhône appellation famous for its steep, granite, terraced slopes. Vincent’s first vintage was in 1997, having inherited vineyards from his grandfather and purchased some from his uncle, legendary Cornas vigneron Robert Michel, on his retirement in 2006. The biodynamically farmed vineyards are located in various parcels along the southeast facing Cornas slope. Vincent’s Granit 30 and Granit 60 take their names from the slope and gradient of the vineyards and average vine age respectively. Vincent’s famed 100+ year old, 1.3 hectare La Geynale parcel, in the Reynard area of Cornas and owned by his family for four generations, is comprised of old vines planted by his great-grandfather in 1910.

Consumers loath to explore Cornas because of ever-increasing prices should consider Vincent Paris's 2020 Cornas Granit 30 when it is released. Hints of violets, crushed stone, licorice and cassis all appear on the nose of Paris's entry-level cuvée, providing ample complexity. A strong effort, it's full-bodied, ripe and silky in texture, with a lingering finish. It may not be classic, put-hair-on-your-chest rustic Cornas, but it's a delicious mouthful of Syrah that's true to its granitic origins. Drink 2023 - 2032.

Joe Czerwinski - Wine Advocate (Jan 2022)Starting with what could be considered the entry level cuvée, the 2020 Cornas Granit 30 comes from further down the slope, from vines closer to the village. That's obviously not a bad thing, since this plump, full-bodied, beautifully textured Cornas has remarkable purity and elegance as well as richness. Blackberries, blueberries, subtle smoke, graphite, and violets all emerge from the glass, and it has a seamless, incredibly elegant texture.

Jeb DunnuckVery herbal, with leafy herbs like tarragon alongside woody herbs such as rosemary. Blueberry and liquorice too. Middleweight style, good concentration of fresh, juicy berry fruit and good persistence. Fresh, intense, gently saline and well-balanced. A good value pick this year. From 10-year-old vines, all destemmed. Drinking Window 2022 - 2028.

2018 Ao Yun Shangri-LaCHINA$599. 00Bottle$7188.00 DozenClosure: CorkAo Yun is the realisation of a dream to produce world class, Bordeaux-style wine from China. Commissioned by Moët Hennessy, Dr. Tony Jordan embarked on a four year long mission to scour the terrain of China for an ideal climate to produce top class Cabernet Sauvignon. Settling in the foothills of the Himalayas, to the north of the Yunnan province, Ao Yun hails from the legendary and remote village of Shangri-La. Sitting at an altitude ranging between 2,200 and 2,600 metres above sea level, the estate is named after the magnificent clouds that gather above the permanently snow-capped mountain ranges: in Mandarin, “Ao Yun” means “flying above the clouds”.
Farming is handled by local families across the 28 hectares of vineyards, divided among 314 blocks with 727 tiny sub-parcels. Organic viticulture is practiced in the vineyards, while everything is done by hand with no machinery. The 2018 Ao Yun is a blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 19% Cabernet Franc, 10% Merlot, 7% Syrah and 4% Petit Verdot.
Other Reviews....
I love the depth and complexity of the nose, which brings you down deeply into the wine, showing blackberry, ink, tar, earth, incense, cloves, and black licorice. Thyme, too. The purity of the fruit, including cassis, is the real thing. This is full-bodied, but remains so fresh and vertical on the palate. The tannins are so fine and integrated, producing a millefeuille-like layering of tannin and cool, blue fruit. Incredible wine. The greatest wine made in China so far. 60% cabernet sauvignon, 19% cabernet franc, 10% merlot, 7% syrah and 4% petit verdot. 26,000 bottles made. Drinkable now, but will be so much better in four or five years.

James SucklingHaving tasted the 2018 Ao Yun for the first time in May 2021 at high altitude in the village of Adong (where the Ao Yun winery is located), it was fascinating to retaste this vintage much closer to sea level in Beijing on December 2, 2021. This proved to be a useful comparative opportunity too, having only a few hours earlier shown the 2017 vintage in a tasting of various Shangri-La wines in Beijing the evening before. The 2018 Ao Yun is a blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 19% Cabernet Franc, 10% Merlot, 7% Syrah and 4% Petit Verdot. As observed in my note from May, this blend shows increased confidence in some of the other varieties coming more online in Ao Yun’s four village sites of Xidang, Sinong, Shuori and Adong (with Merlot playing an increased role). The 2018 Ao Yun maintains its very deep purple appearance. On the nose, albeit youthful, there is already open and abundant super-ripe cassis, black cherry, mulberry, blueberry and black plum fruit with less pyrazine observable in this bottle (although this becomes more overt on the palate). That core of fruit is complemented by subtle new oak notes of clove, toast and smoke. On the palate, the 2018 Ao Yun has abundant, fine-grained and coating tannins with some lively acidity and well-integrated 14.5% alcohol, these structural elements being well-knitted together with the vibrant core of fruit, touch of herbaceous character (sage, mint) and subtle new oak notes. With its long length and marked concentration, although youthful, the 2018, tasted closer to sea level, has the kind of approachability similar to some Napa Cabernet blends. But it is unquestionably super youthful and is taking on entirely its own identity as the very best blend of these four remarkable village vineyard sites (each at different altitudes). The 2018 is just nudging ahead of the 2017 and 2015 in terms of quality. It will be fascinating to see its evolution in bottle. Drink 2023 - 2033.

Edward Ragg - Wine Advocate (Jan 2022)Gorgeously seductive nose, this is rich and abundant, aromas bursting out the glass, smells sweet and spicy, five spice fragrance with sweet blackcurrant and black cherry aromas. Mouthcoating and invigorating on the palate, totally harmonious and balanced with the salinity and wet stone nuances coming through backed by ripe, but so well defined, fruit flavors. Such purity on both the nose and palate. This is seriously refined, aromatics are preserved, balancing power with excellent acidity, so you get these bright and energetic flavours but still with structure. Seductive but this also has a sense of classicism. Lovely saline elements and cooling touch at the end with all the flavours lingering long in the mouth. Will be interesting to see how it ages. Drinking Window 2029 - 2045.

Georgina Hindle - DecanterPolished, smooth and ripe tannins that have plenty of movement in them. Ao Yun has been a wine with confidence and personality since its first vintage of 2013, and here balances concentrated damson and black cherry fruits with fragrant black tea, mandarin peel and sage together with earthier smoked cumin and saffran spice. 2018 was a late harvest through to November 15 (beginning September 7) and ripening under cooler, dry skies in November has translated into drawn out sculpted flavours that reflect the mountain site, and low yields of 21hl/h. Initial ageing took place in 50% Chinese earthenware jars and 50% oak barrels for five months, then a further 10 months in 30% new oak barrels. The team introduced village crus in this year also, drawing them from the four villages where the vines are located, and keeping 54% of overall production for Ao Yun itself - just another clue to the ambitions at this briliant estate. You'll have to wait until 2021 for this release, but it absolutely will reward your patience. What an exceptionally fine creation this is, the 2015 Barolo Vite Talin. It is soft and generous, with great concentration, and the dark fruit shows more fleshiness in the mouth. The tannins have become softer in the 2015 edition. While the 2014 could be described as wild and robust with its spicy, herbal and meaty notes, this Barolo Vite Talin is all about elegance. It is simply beautiful, a feather in any cellar's cap. A mere 2,200 bottles were made. Drink 2024 - 2050.

Monica Larner - Wine Advocate (Jun 2019)The 2015 Barolo Vite Talin has really shut down since I tasted it last year, which is probably a very good thing for its long-term prospects. Radiant and lush on the palate, the 2015 marries fruit intensity with structure to great effect. Far from an easygoing Barolo, the 2015 is going to need the better part of a decade to be at its best and most expressive; but still, the 2015 is super impressive today. Drink 2023 - 2040.

The 2011 Barolo Cannubi Boschis is super impressive. Early signs of aromatic nuance have started to develop, but just barely. More than anything else, the 2011 impresses for its body and pure depth, both of which the 2011 has in spades. Black cherry, plum, chocolate, licorice and spice all build as this dramatic Barolo shows off its allure. The 2011 has aged beautifully. I would prefer to drink it over the next decade. 2019 Domaine Taupenot-Merme Morey-Saint-Denis La Riotte Premier CruBurgundy, FRANCE$310. 00Bottle$3720.00 DozenABV: 14.5%Closure: CorkWhile based in Morey-Saint-Denis, Domaine Taupenot-Merme has collection of prime vineyards across both the Cote de Nuits and the Cote de Beaune. A significant proportion of their 13 hectare holdings are in premier and grand cru plots, including the grands crus Clos des Lambrays, Charmes-Chambertin, Corton-Rognet and Mazoyères-Chambertin. Much of these vineyards contain old vines which have been supplemented with newer plantings from massale selections of their strongest vines.
Seventh-generation Romain Taupenot is in charge of winemaking, aided by his sister Virginie. Organic farming has been practiced since 2001, and once harvested grapes are 100% de-stemmed before a cold soak and indigenous fermentation. Oak use is also sympathetic with only 25% new oak used for the village wines and up to 40% for the grand and premier cru. While the wines can carry a healthy degree of richness, they are always balanced by freshness so as to be a pure and faithful representation of their origin.
La Riotte is one of Morey's leading premiers crus, with mostly very old vines and the same geology as Mazoyères containing calcareous soil rich in clay. Taupenot-Merme has a 0.57ha parcel and the estate’s vines are more than 60 years old on average.

Earthier and less elegant though still pretty aromas are composed by notes of plum and dark berries laced with hints of spice and floral, especially violet. There is again very good verve and freshness to the delicious and caressing yet quite punchy medium-bodied flavors that possess a seductive texture thanks to the sappy dry extract that also serves to buffer the moderately firm tannic spine shaping the slightly longer and more complex finale. This is one to consider, especially for aging over the mid to even longer-term. Drink 2029+.

A notably ripe yet still agreeably fresh combination reveals its aromas of dark currant, warm earth, the sauvage and a discreet hint of wood. There is once again very good energy to the nicely detailed and lightly stony medium-bodied flavors that possess a surprising inner mouth perfume, all wrapped in a lingering and solidly powerful finale. This is a quality Gevrey villages and worth checking out. Drink 2026+.

Allen Meadows - BurghoundThe 2019 Gevrey-Chambertin Village does not quite have the expressiveness of the Morey Village on the nose and demands more coaxing, a little broody and sultry at the moment. Other reviews... Although creating a 'classic' gin is deceptively tricky, refraining from using too many botanicals and including saltbush works wonders for Hickson House. They've created a sophisticated, almost steely-in-character gin. The saltbush complements the gin well, enhancing the green spice notes found in juniper and the drier coriander seed notes, which create the atmosphere of an early morning stroll along the beach. Easily one of the more compelling single malt whisky deals of the year.If you loved the extra depth of flavour of Glenfiddich's hugely popular 50% ABV 'Distillery Edition', then this beauty from Glen Grant promises similar pleasures. Made by Dennis Malcolm, the longest serving Master Distiller in Scotland (born at Glen Grant Distillery in 1946), Jim Murray was blown away with the quality (review below), while it was the "Editor's Pick" at Whisky Advocate in 2021. Originally released for the American market, this is all about showcasing Glen Grant's superbly fruity distillate (think apples and pears). Taste-wise it's a sister style to high-strength Glenfiddichs or Glenlivets (lightly honeyed and fruity). A proper ABV and what seems like minimal chill filtration make it stand out from the mainstream Speyside pack. Also awarded a Double Gold at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition - if you needed more convincing.
Other reviews... A mesmerising display of juicy barley tones which gradually integrate with and then embrace the fragile tannins. Just a little extra buttery oil from the upped strength aids in the longevity of these sensations and gives the mid ground far more weight and substance than you might have expected... though the salivation levels are still high... Long , languid, lilting and lush right to the very end with a little lime blossom honey lightened the Lunjek marzipan... What a malt this has now become! The fact that two successive bottlings have blown me off my tasting desk means they appear to have nailed the personality of this malt, and in so doing extracting and then displaying the extraordinary and unique charm of this distillery. 97 points - Jim Murray's Whisky Bible 2021

Suntory Haku Vodka (700ml)JAPAN$69. 99Bottle$839.88 DozenABV: 40%A premium craft vodka made from 100 percent Japanese white rice. Although the word "haku" literally means "white," the subtlety of the Japanese language often gives characters several meanings. While "haku" is rooted in the word "hakumai," meaning white rice, the nuanced meaning can also be translated as "junpaku," which means an untainted brilliance. The distillers feel it speaks of Haku's clear, clean and luminous flavour.
The vodka begins its distillation process in Kagoshima, Kyushu, a region well-known for rice spirit making. The process includes a meticulous mill and polish, where 100 percent Japanese white rice is fermented to create a mash. The mash is distilled through pot stills to create a rice spirit, and then distilled a second time through two different processes. This liquid is then blended and filtered through bamboo charcoal in Osaka, Japan. This process, unique to Suntory, preserves and enhances the rice's delicately sweet and subtle flavours. Finished in a unique bottle, the curved lines represent the streams of Japan, and the label design consists of Junpaku (pure-white) washi* paper - representing the beauty of Japanese white rice. 40% Alc./Vol.

Distilled from Japanese white rice, this vodka displays subtle violet, almond and charcoal notes on the nose and palate. It finishes light and brisk on a pink peppercorn tingle. 90 points - Kara Newman, wineenthusiast.com

2018 Robert Oatley Limited Release Cabernet SauvignonBarossa, South Australia, AUSTRALIA$69. 99Bottle$839.88 DozenCellar: 6 - 8 Years (2028-2030)ABV: 14%Closure: StelvinDense black as night heart with a deep dark red black hue. Wafting from the glass are potent scents of ripe blackcurrant, liquorice and cigar box trailed by some black olive, earth and spicy dried herb notes. Medium bodied the palate is filled with rich blackcurrant fruit which overlays a back drop of liquorice, cigar box, black olive and spicy dried herb characters. Providing ample structure are sturdily built fine grained tannins. The long generously fruited conclusion complexed by notions of cigar box and spicy dried herbs.
Cellar 6-8 years.

Other Reviews….
A beautifully composed cabernet sauvignon from the very strong 2018 vintage in the Barossa and Eden Valleys. Densely packed blackberry, black cherry and cassis are supported by notes of deep spice, thyme, bay leaf, espresso and cedery French oak. The mouthfeel is luscious and textured with wonderful flow, fruit density, graceful line and tightly packed gypsum-like tannins. The finish, long and pure, is awash with black fruits, cedar and spice. Wonderfully balanced and a wine with a bright future in the cellar. Drink by 2040.

JamesSuckling.com (April 2022)Only 3000 bottles produced. 40% whole bunch. 50% new oak. Piccadilly Valley.
Red cherry, raspberry, spicy creamy vanilla oak, a little floral, with a pleasant amaro twang. Medium-bodied, succulent red fruits, a subtle smokiness, fresh acidity and fine emery tannin, with a some orange zest and a slightly drying/soapy spicy finish of good length. Shows the season to an extent, but has a fair bit of energy and drinks well as at now. Drink 2022 - 2024.

1953 Jean Fillioux Grande Champagne 1er Cru Cognac (350ml)Cognac, FRANCE$850. 00Bottle$10200.00 DozenABV: 42%This 57 year old Grande Champagne cognac is guaranteed to be one of the great spirits experiences of your drinking career. Distilled from the 1953 harvest, a highly regarded vintage when the grapes produced particularly ripe, concentrated wines with exceptional balance and harmony. Fillioux's house style tends to be light, fruit driven and elegant, however he has proven there are exceptions to that rule. This straddles a middle-ground but is undeniably profound - even from a 10ml sample - running the gamut of honey drizzled figs, nectarines, passionfruit, jasmine, cigar box and rancio on both the nose and palate in an almost ethereal fashion. Although the entry is unassuming, it unfolds in a superb 'peacock's tail' of fruity, floral, oaky flavours that are succulent, super elegant and incredibly long. You will be tasting this stunning Hors d'age cognac for minutes after the first sip. Comes presented in a heavy base bottle sealed with red wax housed in an imposing presentation box. Bottled in September 2010 with an outurn of 800 x 350ml bottles. 42% Alc./Vol.
Notes from the producer... Eye: Amber with a red glow. Nose: Teasing aromas of dried flowers, old sherry, incense, and old leather. Palate: Gingerbread, quince confit and toasted orange zest. Delightful finish with fresh hits of liquorice and sweet spices.

2010 Old Pulteney Flotilla Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)Highlands, SCOTLANDReduced from $119.99$109. 99Bottle$1319.88 DozenABV: 46%"...this is excellent... it lost a few points in the end, but I’m still relatively in love with this fresh little baby." - whiskyfun.com
A vintage-dated Old Pulteney that has some similarities to Highland Park's style. 'Flotilla' here simply refers to a small fleet of boats, appropriate as this is a maritime malt matured next to the sea. Hand-selected first fill ex-bourbon barrels held the whisky for ten years before being bottled for the West European market. The profile promises vanilla sweetness with hints of zesty lemon and green apples, rounded off with a distinct maritime note, typical of Pulteney. 46% Alc./Vol.
Other reviews... A brand new Flotilla! Seriously, silly names do not bother me as long as there is a proper age statement, quite the contrary. So, ‘flotilla’, you say that’s Gaelic?* Colour: white wine. Nose: I’m falling in love already. Ten years old, a well-behaved wood, and a rather pure distillate, that’s the recipe for a winner in my book. Shall we call this baby ‘the HP 10 of the mainland’? Lovely sunflower oil, williams pear, gooseberries, candlewax, artisan cider, ale, bread, seaweed… What’s not to like? Mouth: yeeppie! Sure it’s a little on ripe pears and juicy sultanas, so perhaps a tad ‘too easy’, but let's not deny ourselves our joy, this is excellent. Reminds me of those ripe jujubes that they sell in Chinese food markets (no, not next to pangolin meat). So loads of pears, but also vanilla, barley syrup, the said jujubes, a touch of turmeric and ginger… What I’m missing is a little more coastalness at this point, but there, it’s a fine dram. Finish: rather long, sweet, on pears, plums, grass, beer, hay… Comments: it lost a few points in the end, but I’m still relatively in love with this fresh little baby. Rather drink at 12°C, like a white wine, would I say. Ehhh? 85 points - whiskyfun.com
