- Barrell Craft Spirits BCS Rum 13 Year Old Cask Strength Rum (750ml) - Release 01Caribbean,$499. 00Bottle$5988.00 DozenABV: 62.1%
The casks used for BCS release #1 rum were on an Atlantic voyage that spanned almost a year before they reached Kentucky. Rather than issuing them as single barrels, experiments with countless combinations came up with this outstanding blend of vintage rums from Barbados, Jamaica and Guyana. It looks to be a real gem from BCS. The bad news is, we have next to nothing from an outturn of 483 bottles. 62.1% Alc./Vol.
Notes from the bottlers... Nose: Strong notes reminiscent of tepache, a Mexican fermented beverage made from pineapple rinds. Others emerge - fruity notes of green grapes and lime hull, earthy notes of oyster shell and potting soil, and very Jamaican vegetal notes of Kalamata olive, caper, pine needle tea, scallion, and pollen. Palate: Comparatively gentle, the Guyanese lending demerara syrup, purple plum, and crème de cassis, the Barbados bringing characteristic florals and spice: rosehip tea, cinnamon, and star anise. These notes are held together by a fresh maritime character -- seaweed, sea salt, and a little glycerine richness. Finish: The Jamaican hogo is back, as is the tepache, but it’s also spicy, with notes of ginger, turmeric, and catnip. Lychee makes an unexpected appearance.

Barrell Craft Spirits BCS Rum 14 Year Old Cask Strength Rum (750ml) - Release 02JAMAICAReduced from $499.00$450. 00Bottle$5400.00 DozenABV: 64.7%Jamaican rums can be endlessly rewarding in their complexity but a challenge to blend. BCS have ensured each of the distinct aromas shine with a focus on berry fruits and peppers. Patience and a splash of water reward the drinker with boundless entertainment: innumerable tropical fruits, maritime minerals and heady florals. Extremely limited stocks. 64.7% Alc./Vol.
Notes from the bottlers... Nose: The esters are so concentrated and varied that the aroma presents first with the unmistakable monolithic smell of funky Jamaican rum. Slowly, the Barbados and Demerara rums drive a wedge into the funk and focus the profile first around berries and flowers. There’s a fatty element at times reminiscent of tahini or browned butter. A kiss of wood spice, sauna and nutmeg is present. Palate: The alcohol keeps the sweetness in check, the tannins are modest and sandy. Tthe flavors mirror the nose: Blackberry, rosehip, nutmeg, tahini. The mineral side really shines and gives a maritime feel: crushed oyster shell, kelp, fried clams, dry vermouth. Finish: The tropical fruits pop, with lime zest, lychee, navel orange, and pineapple. Some soft resinous touches of mastic and pine pitch. A hint of savory enoki mushroom and sweet crab meat.

Bayou Select Rum (700ml)Louisiana, UNITED STATESReduced from $79.99$69. 99Bottle$839.88 DozenABV: 40%Bayou hails from Louisiana in the USA where they've been producing copper pot distilled rums since 2013. 'Select' is a blend aged up to three years in x bourbon barrels, made from a signature ‘sugarhouse’ recipe (unrefined Louisiana sugarcane and molasses). As a result, in some markets, like the EU, this can't actually be classified as as a rum. Other reviews… Copper color. Fruity aromas of Jamaican sweet plantains, coconut cooking oil, luxury cigarette shop, and chocolate fudge with a satiny, crisp, dry-yet-fruity medium body and an interesting, medium-long caramelized mango, leather strap, cigarillo, and dried pineapple and vanilla finish. - Beenleigh Flood Rum Single Cask Australian Rum (700ml)Queensland, AUSTRALIA$199. 00Bottle$2388.00 DozenABV: 46%
Sold out at the distillery, Beenleigh's award winning 'Flood Rum' is a one-off created in the aftermath of Cyclone Debbie. On March the 30th 2017, Debbie unleased her fury on Brisbane. Many homes were damaged; many had to flee. Brisbane effectively shut down. Beenleigh Distillery, located on the banks of the Albert River, is no stranger to the effects of catastrophic floods. 1887 and 1974 were the “big ones” which the Distillery withheld. But there were many more in between. On the 31st of March 2017, the flood waters broke through and flooded Beenleigh. The team had just put down a rum ferment (usually a 48-to-72-hour process). But the water rose so quickly that the pumps no longer worked, and the ferment was effectively stuck in tanks for a 6-month period before they could be repaired. Upon the recovery and operations continuing, the 127 day & 130 day fermentations were distilled and resulted in twelve ex-Bourbon American oak barrels being filled. To our knowledge, these are being sold as annual single barrel releases, hand-bottled at 46%.
This edition, exclusively for 'The Rum Club' follows the inaugural release in 2021. It was bottled in January 2022, giving 4 years & 5 months maturation. At the time of writing, Flood Rum won its fifth Gold Medal after taking it home at the International Spirits Challenge, Australian Distilled Spirits Awards, International Wine and Spirit Competition, & San Francisco World Spirit Competition last year. Collectable. Very limited stocks.

Berry Bros & Rudd The Classic Range Barbados Rum (700ml)BARBADOSReduced from $79.99$64. 99Bottle$779.88 DozenABV: 40.5%The Barbados edition is just one in BBR's first batch of value, entry-level rums which also includes Jamaica, Guatemala and Nicaragua. Predictably, it hails from the acclaimed Foursquare distillery. A blend of pot and column distilled components bottled at an accessible 40.5%, expect a lighter style with attractive notes of honey, ripe banana and melon.
Other reviews... I’m judging the rum alongside something like the 3 year old Neptune Rum and Doorly’s 5 Year Old. My initial impressions based on the price point and nose is that this is likely a blend of rums aged between 3-5 years. With the majority of that time (say less a year) being in Barbados. Sipped this is a pretty spicy affair. Lots of oak spice, ginger and more than a touch of bitterness. It’s a very dry rum. The initial sip is quite deceptive as further sips of this rum reveal a lot more of the rum. There is a lot more sweetness on the second and third sip with some really nice notes of toffee, dark chocolate and some cashew nuts. Finish wise it’s a little short in terms of flavour. The oak and spiced linger for a fair period but the tastier aspects of the rum quickly fade. All in all it’s a nicely balanced glass of rum but it isn’t anywhere near as complex as something from the Exceptional Cask Series. In terms of profile it is probably closest to Doorly’s 5 and 8. It’s unfussy, uncomplicated and a fairly straightforward, easy going Barbados rum. - thefatrumpirate.com

Berry Bros & Rudd The Classic Range Guatemala Rum (700ml)GUATEMALAReduced from $79.99$64. 99Bottle$779.88 DozenABV: 40.5%Better known as an independent bottler of high quality Scottish grains and malts, Berry Bros. & Rudd's collection now extends into rums, representing a range of countries from Jamaica and Barbados to Mauritius and Fiji. These can vary greatly in smell and taste: spicy or fruity, white or dark, smoky or bright. Though broadly speaking, for BBR, there are three distinctive styles which have been shaped by historical colonial forces: British, French and Spanish. Rums made in English-speaking regions, such as Barbados and Belize, tend to be heavier and richer in style. Those made in French-speaking areas, such as Haiti, are likely to be leafy and smoky; while Spanish-speaking countries, such as Nicaragua and Guatemala, are likely to produce a lighter, brighter style of rum. In this example, the spirit offers an intriguingly restrained nose, with notes of baklava, crepe bandage and marginally undercooked arrowroot biscuits, with maybe a hint of curry leaf. The palate is dominated by sugar cane, although pleasingly dry on a finish where any wood is beautifully smothered in cane honey. Mojitos all round, please! 40.5% Alc./Vol.

Berrys (Caroni Estate 2nd Release) XO Caribbean Rum (700ml)TRINIDAD AND TOBAGO$110. 00Bottle$1320.00 DozenABV: 46%All that's left of the Caroni Estate Distillery, a small piece of liquid Caribbean history.
Trinidad once boasted more than 50 distilleries. The number dwindled to eight by the 1950s and now only Angostura remains. The decline was mostly due to the demise of the local sugar industry (Trinidad now imports molasses for rum production). This increasingly rare bottling represents a small part of that era.
The Caroni Estate Distillery (est. 1918), closed in 2003 and is now sadly, demolished. It was built on the site of an old sugar factory and for a period supplied rums to the British Navy. At the time, there were some eight to ten other sugar factories operating, each producing different types (and qualities) of rums, bought up by merchants and sold to rum shops all over the island. Caroni gradually increased the quality of its distilling process, moving on from its original cast iron still to a wooden coffey still, until 1945 when they acquired a copper still which was followed by a single column in 1957 and then a four column Gerb Herman still in 1980. Rums from the estate gained a reputation for being particularly flavoursome. After the 2003 closure, some Caroni casks made their way back to the U.K. Berry Brothers & Rudd, the U.K.'s oldest wine merchant, secured a number of these for future release. We're pleased to be able to offer an allocation of what is unquestionably a true collector's and connoisseur's delight.
Once these are gone, they're gone forever. Tasting note: Brilliant polished copper colour. Enticing opening scents of custard, sweet spices (nutmeg, cinnamon, vanilla) followed by banana cake and dilute golden syrup. Second pass finds caramel and milk chocolate with cut grass & subtle menthol-like notes retaining the freshness throughout. Follows on the palate with a semi sweet, silky delivery including roasted nuts, buttered raisin toast, light golden syrup and a gently tannic, fresh, grassy, cough lozenge accented finish. Black Gate Distillery Ranga Rum (700ml)New South Wales, AUSTRALIA$135. 00Bottle$1620.00 DozenABV: 51%A new Aussie rum from the team at Black Gate, better known for their cracking single malts. This is produced from molasses in a traditional copper pot still, then matured for two years in a second fill 100 litre ex sherry cask. A final twist sees the rum finished in a 100 litre ex ginger beer cask, pushing this into spiced rum territory. 161 bottles on offer. Tasting note: Brilliant gold. Ideal clarity. Nosing finds an amalgam of golden syrup, ginger bread and green banana. Entry is hollow, subdued, understated. Builds to an intense, off-dry ginger beer attack that pretty much eclipses any trace of rum, excepting the spirit heat. Rounds out like a double barrel Dark'n'Stormy, which is essentially what this cask experiment is. Ginger beer defines the aftertaste. - Black Tot Master Blender's Reserve Cask Strength Rum (700ml) - 2023 Limited Edition$299. 00Bottle$3588.00 DozenABV: 54.5%
For the fourth evolution of the Master Blender's Reserve, Oliver Chilton has looked to create a blend that is closer to the original Navy rum with a heavier mouth feel and rich notes of wood smoke, espresso and cacao. As always, he has put his own spin on the assemblage, this year including a rum from Grenada, distilled in 1993, to add depth and accentuate a rich orange oil notes from the Perpetual Reserve. As always, the blend begins with rum drawn from the previous year's Master Blender’s Reserve - this works in a similar way to a Solera, whereby one-third of a blend is held back for another year and blended again. In 2023, casks were selected from Trinidad, Barbados, Jamaica, Guyana and Grenada (see below for a comprehensive breakdown). Notably, a higher proportion from Guyana component was included, the thick liquorice and muscovado in this rum helps recreate the unique flavour profiles they exhibited over half a century ago. These five blends were then brought together and married with the Perpetual Reserve, as well as some of the original Navy Rum from 1970, keeping the liquid history alive. Chilton comments, "With a larger focus on older rums from Guyana and the addition of 30-year-old rum from Grenada, a real sense of maturity and status has developed. It is such a privilege to be able to keep back stock from each blend to mature on and use as the heart of the next iteration of Master Blender’s Reserve, reimagining a blending technique used for so many decades by the rum blenders of the Navy.” 54.5% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered.

Black Tot Master Blender's Reserve Cask Strength Rum (700ml) - 2021 Limited Edition$260. 00Bottle$3120.00 DozenABV: 54.5%Another first class blending achievement, this time with an Australian twist.
While comparisons with the inaugural release are inevitable, the Master Blender's Reserve is not simply a slightly older version of last year's 50th Anniversary rum, but a different composition altogether. Different countries, still types and ages have contributed with Head Blender, Oliver Chilton opting for a 'fruitier' expression. It also celebrates the 100th Anniversary of the last rum ration given to the Australian Navy after separating from the Royal Navy, although Australians serving on British ships could still receive rum - in 1921 this was also forbidden. Adding substance to the sentiment, 6.7% of the blend is from Beenleigh Distillery (ten years aged in Queensland and four years continentally).
At its heart is the 'perpetual' base spirit (14% of last year’s 50th Anniversary release), re-casked into ex-sherry butts and blended with rums between 9 and 24 years old from Guyana, Barbados, Trinidad, Jamaica. These make up the majority of the blend. Even from a 20ml sample they come through powerfully on the nose which has a drier, well-aged Demerara-like feel, developing dense aromas of fruit cake, bush honey and zesty peel matched by nutmeg, vanilla, ginger and cinnamon. Stay with it longer and you'll discover even more. The early palate stages are a little understated - call it elegant (this is anything but an overly-sweet contemporary style). Off-dry flavours of liquorice, roast nut, coffee, brown sugar, dried banana, leather and spice dovetail into a long, fanning flourish of intense, estery complexity. That sensational late burst seems to be Chilton's signature, and it unfolds in slow motion, drawn out with molasses cake, warming cinnamon and bittersweet dark chocolate as well as hints of exotic fruits. The alcohol is less and less discernible with each sip, inverse to the stunning persistence of flavour. 6000 bottles are available globally, however Australia's allocation will be closer to several hundred. Decanted from the casks with zero added sugar and no chill filtration, for full transparency, refer to the details and ratios of the blend below. 54.5% Alc./Vol.

Other reviews... I'm always finding it rather moving when very altruistic distillers and master blenders accept to part with their own reserves. By the way, for the first time distinguished Master Blender Oliver Chilton has added some Australian rum to the Black Tot composition; could that be Beenleigh? Other than that, it's all a 'British' rum with Guyana, Jamaica, Barbados and Trinidad. Colour: gold. Nose: you would almost believe you could read through this one on the nose, finding the Jamaican(s), Trinidadian, Bajan… It's pretty estery, diesely, with some meatiness (bacon) and quite some liquorice and star anise, then overripe bananas and fermenting pineapples. Touches of olives, which I always find very Jamaican (although I've never checked if they were growing olives in Jamaica) and a handful of raisins. With water: gets drier, on many herbal teas and even more liquorice (sticks). Very fresh allspice mix. Mouth (neat): ultra-classic rich British-style rum, with heavy liquorice, petrol and rotting topical fruits, and a spiciness that may stem from the Australian. Just a very wild and silly guess. With water: very good, a notch lighter perhaps (Barbados?) with those raisins coming to the front and a few violet sweets in the background. But liquorice keeps running the show. Finish: rather long and quite salty. A little more pipe tobacco, molasses, prunes and raisins. Comments: excellently constructed and very 'British Navy' indeed. Why not also do a French Marine Nationale rhum, one of these days? 87 points - whiskyfun.com
...The length on the finish is just right and the flavours linger for long after the liquid has evaporated. As mentioned already this is quite an intense rum so you will probably take time between each sip to savour the finish. I certainly have anyway. As is often the way my previous years bottling is long gone. So I can’t do a head to head comparison. I do know that this is definitely in the same league as the 50th Anniversary and I really have no hesitation in giving a rum as good as this full marks. Another great addition to the Black Tot cannon. Great stuff. 5 stars - thefatrumpirate.com
Notes from the bottlers... Cinnamon sticks, cooking in brown butter, with nutmeg and cloves. Overripe mangoes and baked bananas, with dusty dark chocolate. More citrus notes build in the glass - satsumas and freshly squeezed navel oranges blend with juicy nectarine and cooked honey. In the background, a dense oily note complements the zesty flavours and merges with herbaceous notes of mint and lemon thyme. Taste: At first, a huge hit of concentrated orange and mango juice, with fresh mint and golden brown caster sugar. The sweetness evolves into milk chocolate and salted caramel, while the fruit seems to become denser, bringing in flavours of guava and passion fruit. Another sip brings orange blossom, balanced by runny honey. Finish: Clementine and mandarin make up a citrus salad, evolving with a pleasing dryness reminiscent of thyme and oregano. Right at the very end, a hint of diesel oil.

Black Tot 50th Anniversary Cask Strength Rum (700ml)Caribbean,$240. 00Bottle$2880.00 DozenABV: 54.5%Stepping away from whisky for a moment - possibly the only other wood-aged spirit capable of arousing the same passions comes from ‘the reed which brings forth honey’ (without the help of bees)– mainly because it’s capable of a similar dizzying complexity and diversity that whisky achieves.
Here's one that comes with a strong "buy now", and for more than one reason. This is the fourth instalment from Elixir Distillers under the Black Tot label and marks the 50th Anniversary of the abolition of the Royal Navy's daily rum ration. To commemorate “Black Tot Day”, Head Blender, Oliver Chilton together with co-founder Sukhinder Singhhas created a limited edition Caribbean rum and bottled it at navy strength. It includes some incredibly old and genuinely rare stocks, noted marques for the (majority) Guyanese rums, including distillates from a wooden pot still to a multi-column still with age statements from 9 to 42 years. A splash of the original Royal Navy rum, continuously blended in wooden vats from the early 1800s through to 1970 has been thrown in for good measure.
Here's the full breakdown:28% 12 year Guyana – Demerara Distillers – Savalle still
27% 9 year Guyana – Demerara Distillers – Savalle still
15% 11 year Barbados – Foursquare – pot/column still
11% 10 year Trinidad – Trinidad Distillers – column still
8% 9 year Jamaica – Hampden – pot still
6% 10 year Guyana – Demerara Distillers – Port Mourant still
4% 23 year Trinidad – Caroni – column still. CLOSED DISTILLERY.
0.5% 42 year Guyana – Uitvlugt – Port Mourant still. CLOSED DISTILLERY.
0.5% Original Royal Navy Rum – world blend
The vision wasn't to make a replica of the original navy rum or copy new Caribbean expressions, but to create something that sat in between. Also, Sukhinder prefers older and richer old-school navy style rums while Chilton likes fresher and funkier modern rum. They started with the four pillars of Royal Naval rum – the islands of Jamaica, Barbados, Guyana and Trinidad. Samples were then pulled from casks and rums were blended.
Tasting note: Mahogany colour. Brooding depths to the layered nose: Molasses cake and liquorice strap. Plantain and drier vanillas. Fruit cake, cinnamon, nutmeg and bitter cocoa. The sugars are evenly matched against the funk and freshness. Unravels with stunning length as the alcohol pulsates the taste buds. Sweet and dry, old and new, wrangle together; liquorice strap meets grassier / fruitier notes. Raisin cake meets bitter dark chocolate. Rancio and resiny oak give an hors d'age Armagnac feel to the finish, followed by walnut slice, dried banana, cinnamon and ginger bread. Rebounds with mocha, dried fruits (raisin / date) and brandy cream sauce and lasts for minutes. A contemporary rum with an old soul that demonstrates Chilton and his blending team are at the top of their game. 54.5% Alc./Vol. Non chill filtered. Zero sugar added. 5000 bottles.
Other reviews... I’ll be entirely honest and say this has ticked every box for me. Whether is it a faithful recreation of the rum drank pre-1970, I’m really not that bothered to be honest. It’s a fantastic blended rum. 5 Stars - thefatrumpirate.com
Official tasting notes... Nose : We are greeted with cinnamon sticks, sprinkled with nutmeg, toasting in the oven. Then a deep richness, akin to caramel-glazed apple tart, with some citrus elements rolling in. There is also barbecued pineapple and grapefruit zest, balanced by notes of melting chocolate raisins and freshly ground Jamaican blue mountain coffee. With more time, a hint of well-aged spirit emerges, reminiscent of dusty books in a historic library. Palate : From the first sip, the palate is almost overrun with the combination of liquorice sticks and vanilla bean paste. As the flavours coat the mouth, lime juice married with 80% cocoa dark chocolate appears, which slowly deepens to brandy-poached pears. A backbone of dried mint and tarragon is married with natural sweetness and a touch of nuttiness, in the form of bananas and walnuts. Finish : Long and lingering, with flavours of mint chocolate chip ice cream and soft liquorice, dipped in sherbet. The rich flavours of a whole-milk latte topped with cream dissipate to leave a pleasant dryness, leading to another sip.
- 1975 Black Tot 40 Year Old Cask Strength Demerara Rum (700ml)GUYANA$2799. 00Bottle$33588.00 DozenABV: 44.2%On Friday 31st July 1970, serving seamen of the Royal Navy mustered one last time for the daily issue of rum, a tradition that had begun nearly 240 years earlier in 1731. Nearly fifty years after the end of the Royal Navy rum ration, independent bottlers, 'Elixir Distillers' have launched Black Tot 40 Year Old, a fitting follow up to the original "Last Consignment". Produced in 1975 using the world's only operational Wooden Double pot still, the Port Mourant, a total of six casks were filled resulting in just 606 bottles at 44.2% ABV. Indicative of the molasses based rums that would have been at the heart of the original Naval blend, it is a 100% Demerara style and comes beautifully packaged in a lacquered black box and an impressive heavy set, wax dipped, gold-etched bottle. We have two only available. This exceptionally old, undiluted, all natural expression is the result of incredible spirit, high quality casks and time alone. It will be the jewel in the crown of any collector or enthusiast. Oliver Chilton, manager of Elixir Distillers, creators of the Black Tot rum brand, explains, "Guyana has long been famed for creating 100% demerara rum but for us to acquire casks holding such old liquid from the island is now very rare. Our first Black Tot bottling back in 2011 featured the last of the actual rum served by the British Navy up until 31st July 1970, which was made in a solera system that had been in continuous use for around 50 years. And so the next chapter of the Black Tot story is a unique 40 year old demerara rum paying homage to a unique naval tradition." Notes from the producer... NOSE: Dense liquorice, star anise and fruity black olives roll out of the glass, accompanied by heady cigar smoke and fragrant pine. Warm and ripe citrus fruit – orange and lemon flesh and peel – blends with spicy cinnamon and nutmeg. PALATE: Thick dark treacle and olive brine mix with cherry concentrate and charred oak. The texture is rich and heavy, enveloping your mouth and exploding with intense flavour. More smoke comes through on the palate, mixing with the flavours of plump sultanas, bittersweet raisins and juicy blackcurrants. Notes of liquorice and five spice intertwine with the fruit and smoke. FINISH: The balance between sweet and savoury is extraordinary and keeps developing on the palate, creating a finish that lasts for an age. 44.2% Alc./Vol.

315 Years of British Naval History
On July 31st 1970 a 300 year-old Royal Naval tradition ended at precisely 6 bells in the forenoon watch (11am) when the last rum ration was issued aboard ships of the Royal Navy - a day to be forever remembered as Black Tot Day.
With the withdrawal of the rum ration, the Royal Navy had little use for the remaining rum stocks which were filled into wicker clad stone flagons and transferred to HM bonded warehouses where it remained undisturbed, being only broached for use on State Occasions and Royal Weddings until now.
The precise makeup or age of the rum cannot be specified but records support that it was probably distilled in the 1950’s and was imported from the West Indies. Nevertheless, a slice of history is up for grabs, the likes of which we couldn't imagine ever being seen again!
Tasting note: Pours a deep copper/mahogany colour with some minor sediment evident. Perfumed aromatics exude layers of molasses, brown sugar, liquorice all sorts and new leather. Entry is semi sweet and soft, building with exceptional concentration. Mid palate is off dry with a momentary burst of date and raisin, becoming dry, spicy and fruit cake like. Stunning length as the flavours repeat in waves. Finish is progressively drier as delicate, powdery tannins enter. Impeccable balance. Concludes super fine and dry with notes of charry oak, sarsaparilla and cigar box. The persistence of flavour is nothing short of remarkable as the aftertaste reverberates in the mouth for ten minutes plus. An exhilarating rum experience. 54.3% Alc./Vol.
Other reviews... The Colour - Bright, yet deep mahogany cut with flashes of ruby.
The Nose - Initial treacle notes precede dark chocolate with super-ripe black fruits, muscovado sugar and walnuts. A drop of water releases notes of black banana, liquorice root, tamarind paste with and exotic edge of balsamic.
The Palate - Starts off thick and sweet, becoming light and oaky before a burst of cassis / creme de mures then espresso & cacao.
The Finish - Very long with light scented wood, black fruits and cigar tobacco.
The Strength - Remarkably, after 40 years Black Tot will be introduced at 54.3% (94.2° proof), almost exactly original issuing strength." - David Broom -

Notes on Black Tot Master Blender's Reserve...
6000 bottles are available globally, however Australia's allocation will be closer to several hundred. Decanted from the casks with zero added sugar and no chill filtration. 54.5% Alc./Vol. 95 points

Rum and the sea are inseparable, and no rum is more akin to the sea and the seaman than is British Navy Pusser’s Rum. For more than 300 years, sailors of Great Britain’s Royal Navy were issued a daily ration of rum by the Purser (corrupted to 'Pusser' by the Jack Tars). From 1655 until the traditions termination on August 1st 1970, 'Pusser’s Rum' was one of the few daily comforts afforded those early seamen of Britain's Navy as they fought across the globe to keep the Empire intact and its sea lanes open. British Navy Pusser’s Rum is the same blend of six West Indian rums as discovered during the Navy’s expeditions and served on board Their Majesties’ ships for three centuries. Today, it is still blended in accordance with the Admiralty’s exacting specifications of 1810. Pusser’s Rum was never sold or offered to the public, and if a rum connoisseur managed to acquire a tot or two, he saved it for a very special occasion.British Navy Pusser’s Rum is expertly blended from some of the world's finest Caribbean rums. Amongst x-seamen, the consensus is that Pusser's is about as close to the authentic British Royal Navy Rum as one can obtain. Spirit connoisseurs claim Pusser's to be more like a fine brandy than a rum, with a full, rich flavour and a rare smoothness - a true sailor's delight! This is essentially a sipping rum, however its unmistakably full, rich flavour will shine through anything you care to mix it with.
Tasting note: [42% Alc./Vol batch tasted] Deep gold / copper colour with a gold hue. The nose is restrained at first offering woody, resinous scents, but is worth spending some time with to cajole out the complex aromas of liquorice all sorts, brown sugar, citrus zest and pine nuts. The rich, spicy palate offers flavours of clove, vanilla bean, juicy raisins, honey and nutmeg. Pure, smooth and gently warming. Long aftertaste of honeycomb, toffee and liquorice all sorts with a subtle, drying cocoa fade. A well poised dark rum - full flavoured without becoming over-sweet or fat.
Other reviews... Deep amber color. Rubber sap, marinated vinegar, caramel taffy, ad brown spice aromas. A round entry leads to a glycerous off-dry medium-to full bodied palate with sherried brown spices, mineral spirits, roasted Brazil nuts, cedar, and toffee. Finishes with a touch of shellac, exotic peppercorn, and very spicy heat. A very hearty, traditional navy rum.

2022 British Navy Pussers Rum Deptford Dockyard Reserve Navy Proof Rum (700ml)Caribbean,$199. 00Bottle$2388.00 DozenABV: 54.5%Voted World's Best Pot & Column still Rum at the World Rum Awards 2020.
In 1742, Deptford Dockyard was the Royal Navy Victualling Board’s main spirit depot; housing 30 storage vats that accommodated and aged more than 250,000 gallons of rum. From here, they supplied the Fleet with a flavourful blend of ‘Empire’ rums from British Navy suppliers in the Caribbean. While little is known about early Admiralty specifications, the blend was done “in such proportion as experience had shown was preferred by the men.”
As is now popular rum folklore, the final daily rum ration was served on 31 July 1970 at 6 bells in the forenoon watch (11am), ending a Royal Navy tradition of more than 300 years. Some sailors wore black armbands, tots were 'buried at sea' and in one navy training camp there was a mock funeral procession complete with black coffin and accompanying drummers and piper.
To commemorate the 52nd anniversary of Black Tot Day, as it became known, Pusser’s have introduced a limited-edition Deptford Dockyard Reserve at Navy proof, featuring a blend of high-ester distillates from Caribbean countries in Great Britain’s naval past (Guyana [Demerara], Trinidad, Barbados and Jamaica). Offered at the same strength that bulk underproof rum was historically stored at the Dockyards, the hefty ABV is intimidating until you taste it. Aged for a minimum of three years in x-Bourbon barrels but tasting much, much older, Deptford Dockyard is a medium-bodied rum, shy on the nose while boasting beautifully integrated flavours of Christmas cake, orange zest and festive spices that draw comparisons to heavily sherried single malt. Its restrained power dials down with liquorice bullets, chico lollies, cinnamon buns, brandy sauce and lingering molasses cake. Easily approached uncut, think of it as a cross between richer, darker Demerara styles and high ester Jamaicans - less the extreme funk. 54.5% Alc./Vol.

Matured for three years in first-fill Bourbon barrels and released at an eye-watering strength - as it was traditionally shipped to the Royal Navy victualling yards in Deptford, Gosport, and Devonport for blending and dilution. The nose opens with pungent Indian spices and evolves to molasses-drenched fruit cake, papaya, peel-heavy marmalade, dates, coffee beans and dark chocolate in a punchy but classic Demerara whiff that's ultimately Armagnac-like. Tasted without dilution, the flavours are intense, alcohol-charged, bittersweet, tropical, estery, resiny and complex. Tactile and almost unctuous to finish, striking a deeply satisfying balance in spite of the extreme ABV, this high-octane, gorilla of a rum guarantees to blast tropical cocktails into the stratosphere. Nothing has been added before bottling. (We recommend tasting, but not drinking it straight). 75.5% Alc./Vol.

Admiral Horatio Lord Nelson, Royal Navy, one of the world's greatest fighting admirals, never lost a major battle. At Trafalgar on October 21st, 1805, although outnumbered, he defeated the combined navies of Spain and France. In this fierce battle that would determine who ruled the waves for the century that followed, Nelson sank or captured 19 of the enemy while losing not a single British ship. Unfortunately, at the age of 47, he was mortally wounded and died three hours before the end of the battle with the knowledge that victory was his. For the journey home, his body was carried on board HMS VICTORY, his flagship. Legend has it that to preserve it during the long voyage, they placed him in a large cask of Pusser's Rum. Upon arrival in England, it was discovered that the jack tars (sailors) had drilled a small hole at the base of the cask and drank all the rum - thereby drinking of Nelson's Blood. This term is still widely used today by Navy and history buffs as their alternative name for Pusser's Rum.
This special porcelain flask bottling features traditional Royal Navy toasts on the back of the flask (the same that have been offered for more than 200 years). They are still offered today at dinner on board Royal Navy ships and shore installations. The four flag signal to "Splice the Main-brace", also featured, was flown to signify a double issue of rum. Today, to say to a friend, "Let's splice the main brace!" is akin to saying, "Let's have a drink!".

Pussers have announced a new release in the form of Gunpowder Proof Spiced Rum. Blended to Admiralty specifications and aged for a minimum of three years in once-used charred oak bourbon barrels, it comes mellowed with a subtle blend of spices. These include banana, vanilla, chocolate, cinnamon and a hint of ginger resulting in an incredibly smooth spiced expression with genuine depth and power. Reviews on the blogosphere suggest Pussers is breaking new ground. At a significantly higher ABV, this is guaranteed to pop in mixed drinks and cocktails. Gary Rogalski (CEO of Pussers Rum) comments: “We had an outpouring demand from rum aficionados around the world to “spice-up” liquid history and I believe we have accomplished that goal. We have added a nuance of Caribbean fruits and spices without taking anything away from the blend’s classic Demerara wooden pot still heritage. I believe our customers will find the sensory perception of this rum to be world-class in every respect!” 54.5% Alc./Vol.

Pusser's, 'the single malt of rum', has recently added a magnificent 'Yachting Decanter' to its popular range of rum-filled ceramics, paying tribute to a magnificent sport which had its beginnings in the 1600’s. Many consider that the first recorded yacht race took place under King Charles II on September 6, 1662 out of Greenwich, England. Since then, modern yachts and rigs have evolved from the heavier, cumbersome vessels of those early days to the sleek, greyhounds of the seas of today.
The major design around the base of the decanter depicts most all of the modern rigs that are sailing today, [see below] including the popular one-design classes. The original art was commissioned by Pusser’s and painted by A. D. Blake of New Zealand, recognized as one of the world’s foremost marine artists.
On the decanter’s shoulder are the names of the current world’s most prestigious yacht races: The America’s Cup, the Transpac, the Volvo Ocean Race, Fastnet, Vendée Globe, Chicago-Mackinac, the Bermuda Race, the Admiral’s Cup and the Sydney to Hobart. Three smaller cameos also adorn the shoulder: Captain Joshua Slocum's 'Spray', Captain Slocum was the first man to sail alone around the world from 1895-1898; the Schooner 'America', winner of the first America's Cup Race on August 22, 1851; the 'Jolie Brise', winner of the first Fastnet Race in 1925.
The large, hand-cast ceramic stopper has a countersunk center with a colorful Pusser's Navy Rum life ring logo. Its facing edges are trimmed in gold, and frame the flag signal for 'Splice the Main Brace!' The Killick's fouled anchor, the official anchor of the Royal Navy, is repeated in gold on the decanter's neck.

Rum and the sea are inseparable, and no rum is more akin to the sea and the sailor than Pusser's Rum–the Original Navy Rum. For more than 300 years, from the earliest days of wooden ships and iron men, sailors of Great Britain's Royal Navy were issued a daily ration–or "tot"–of rum by the ship's "Purser" (corrupted by the sailors to Pusser's). Prior to 1740, the men's daily tot of Pusser's Rum was a pint a day, which they drank neat, that is without water! Before battle, they were issued a double 'tot', and always after victory for a job well done! From 1655 to the 19th century, Pusser's Rum was one of the few daily comforts afforded those early seamen of Britain's Navy as they fought around the globe to keep the Empire intact and its sea lanes open. It was not until July 31st, 1970 that the Admiralty Board abolished the daily issue of Pusser's Rum. "Times had changed", they said as they concluded that "in a highly sophisticated navy no risk for margin or error which might be attributable to rum could be allowed". And so it was that the daily issue of Pusser's Rum, which had stood the test of time as the Navy's longest serving tradition for over 300 years, was cast aside like a piece of flotsam and jetsam where it lay quietly until 1979. In 1979, Charles Tobias–entrepreneur, global sailor, raconteur–sought to resurrect the Pusser's Rum tradition. He obtained the rights and all the blending information from the Admiralty, and formed Pusser's Ltd. on Tortola in the British Virgin Islands and began bottling and selling this storied spirit in 1980 to the public for the first time. (Prior to then, it was restricted to the Royal Navy). British Navy Pusser's Rum is the same Admiralty blend of five West Indian rums as issued on board British warships, and it is with the Admiralty's blessing and approval that Pusser's is now available to the consumer.
Today's Pusser's Rum, known as "the single malt of rum" is still produced in exact accordance with the Admiralty's specifications for rum. Unlike most rums, Pusser's uses no flavoring agents. It is 100% natural. In 2001, Pusser's was awarded the "Gold Medal - World's Premier Dark Rum" at the International Wine & Spirits Festival. In 2003, Pusser's Rum won a "Double Gold Medal" at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition and a Gold Medal at the same festival in 2005.

Reproduced in detail, the decanters decorative feautures include: The Admiral Lord Nelson Cameo, The Royal Navy Traditional Toasts Cameo, The Rule Britannia Cameo, the Seven Seas Cameo around the base – even the stopper bears designs and insignas which will be familiar to any navy enthusiast. The Traditional Royal Navy Toasts Cameo can be found on the back of the decanter – (In the early days, up until about 1900, the officers also received rum. In the Ward Room of the Officers Quarters, the daily dinner ritual (at noon) was to toast the reigning monarch, which was then followed by the toast of the day. This ritual is still in effect.) The toasts are:
Monday: Our ships at sea.
Tuesday: Our men.
Wednesday: Ourselves.
Thursday: A bloody war and quick promotion.
Friday: A willing soul and sea room.
Saturday: Sweethearts and wives, may they never meet.
Sunday: Absent friends and those at sea.A note on Ships Decanters…Ships decanters had their beginnings in the early naval sailing ships of the Royal Navy, and it would have been an exception to have found a captain's cabin without one- from the smallest to the largest vessel. The general shape began to develop sometime in the second half of the 18th century, and nothing much is heard of them until a well known British Admiral by the name of Rodney introduced one at a victory celebration on board his flagship following the famous Moonlight Battle and the Battle of the Saints in 1780 and 1782. His decanters had an especially broad base, some of them up to 12-inches in diameter, to ensure stability when used at sea in wardrooms or officers' cabins. It's said that the true test of a ship's decanter is when the shortest distance from the outer edge of the pouring lip to the edge of the base be equal to or greater than the outer circumference of the pouring lip. This was the "Rodney" test.

- Bundaberg Silver White Rum (700ml)Bundaberg, Queensland, AUSTRALIA$99. 99Bottle$1199.88 DozenABV: 37%
Generally considered a mixer more than a sipper, Bundy's entry level white rum is made by blending unaged rum with aged reserves matured for 4 years in first-fill American oak bourbon barrels. It gets charcoal filtered for a smooth & clean finish before bottling at 37% Alc./Vol.
- Bundaberg Master Distiller's Collection Small Batch Silver Reserve Rum (700ml)Bundaberg, Queensland, AUSTRALIA$69. 99Bottle$839.88 DozenABV: 40%
This is Bundy's foray into the large white rum category. Crafted by blending white rum with the smoothest aged reserves and matured for four years in first-fill American oak bourbon barrels, it's then charcoal filtered for a smooth & clean finish. Reportedly it has a subtle Bundy taste which makes it something you can drink straight. And while not at the standard of some of the tastier Caribbean rums, it works well as a mixer. Try it in your next Mojito. 40% Alc./Vol.
Notes from the producers... Palate: Perfect balance of tropical fruit flavour & spice. Finish: Finishes with hints of vanilla and oak.

Bundaberg rum has been an integral part of Australia’s heritage since 1888. Released in 2011, this commemorative edition has been matured for 1,961 days for the 'birth' of "Bundy R.Bear" as the distillery's mascot in 1961. The bear motif was introduced to imply that Bundy Rum could ward off the coldest chill. It's since gone on to become an Australian icon. Limited edition.
Carribbean Class.
Besides whisky - possibly the only other wood-aged spirit capable of arousing the same passions comes from ‘the reed which brings forth honey’ (without the help of bees)– mainly because it’s capable of a similar dizzying complexity and diversity that whisky achieves. Rums are as diverse as whiskies, and much depends on how the distiller and blender create their product. Rum is also thought to be the world's oldest spirit with its cultural heritage centered in the Caribbean and its history inextricably intertwined with colonialism, slavery and the creation of capitalism. If you haven't been inspired to try the aged rums of the Caribbean then you’ve got a lot to look forward to. This applies not only to those who’ve never moved beyond Bundaberg and Coke since high school, but more so to those who are serious about wine, whisky and brandy - in short, those of us who are passionate about ‘flavour’.
